State Youth Director invites members, friends to State Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, August 7 Dear Members and Friends, Summer is a time that we showcase our youth in the SPJST. Right now, our young people are preparing for District and State Youth Achievement Days. They are working hard on their crafts, talents, and royalty presentations. They are very proud to represent their lodges and their districts.

I cordially invite you to share Saturday, August 7 celebrating the young people of SPJST at State Youth Achievement Day at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center, located at 3303 North Third Street in Temple.

You will see some of the best crafts and talents in the state of Texas. And, our teens will amaze you in the king and queen competition with their public speaking abilities.

Opening Ceremonies at 11 am.

The day begins with opening ceremonies at 11 a.m. An enchilada lunch, which will include enchiladas, rice, beans, chips/sauce, and tea/lemonade, will be available for $4.50 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other food will be available throughout the day.

SPJST youth who receive first place honors at their district competitions across Texas this summer will compete at the state level in various competitions, including group and individual talent, nine craft categories, a special

category, and youth club poster and scrapbook. Following judging, all crafts, special category projects, posters and scrapbooks will be displayed for the public.

The talent competition begins at 11:30 a.m. Young people ages six to high school senior will compete in dance, vocal, instrumentals and dramatics.

Prior to the talent contests, the youth will compete in a special category contest. This contest is left a surprise to all competitors until the day of the event.

Past special category contests have included play-dough construction, story-telling, and drawing.

Scholarships totaling almost $10,000 will be presented to SPJST youth members during the awards ceremony.

Videos of this year's State Youth Achievement Day featuring the talent performances, royalty speeches, and award ceremony will be available.

Silent Auction to Benefit Scholarship Fund and ENC This year's food category is candy.

Following judging, the candy will be sold in a silent auction to the highest bidders. All proceeds will go to the SPJST Scholarship Fund and the Education and Nature Center. SPJST records 2278 applications written through June in Join Hands 2004 program Through the end of February, the SPJST had received 2278 applications for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Join Hands 2004 membership drive is to write at least 2,345 applications in 2004.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through June 30, 2004.

Sister Gladys Yates 1945 - 2004

Donations being accepted for Gladys Yates Memorial Scholarship SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (}AC) Gladys Yates, 58, passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2004, following a courageous bout with cancer. In loving memory, the SPJST Supreme Lodge has established an account for the purpose of establishing a perpetual scholarship in memory of Sister Yates. A total of $10,000 must be received before the scholarship is considered to be "endowed," or fully funded. Supreme Lodge Chahinan Bob Bayer announced the formation of the scholarship fund at the Twenty-Ninth SPJST Convention Banquet held June 15 at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple.

To date, more than 30 lodges and individuals have contributed more than $2,000 to the fund. As of this writing, lead donor in the drive has been Lodge 177, Academy, which made a $1,000 donation to the fund. Donors contributing $100 or more include Doss Sales Company; SPJST Lodge 229, Abilene; SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville; SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson; Robert and Kelley Johnson and Marie Stayton.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville meets to discuss maintenance items SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville President Glenn Pflughaupt called a meeting of the lodge officers on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 to discuss items regarding the maintenance of SPJST Lodge 1 Hall, miscellaneous outdoor buildings used for storage and rest rooms. We also discussed the concern of the upkeep of the grounds, keeping the area mowed, trees trimmed and removing rubbish, etc.

The Fayetteville Chamber Chamber of Commerce leases the building from SPJST Lodge 1 which in turn leases it to those wanting to use the facilities, and thus is responsible for the maintenance using the rental funds received for this purpose as stated in the lease contract.

The hall needs to be spray-washed and painted. Leaks in the metal roof need to be repaired as discussed last year for which funds were set aside in the budgets of both organization's budgets. The outdoor restrooms have water leaks behind the toilets, and other toilet problems because of items put into the commode. The lavatory faucet leaks, floor repairs are needed, a paper towel dispenser is needed and trash cans, and handicap accommodations are also required. In addition, there are water line leaks alos being the outdoor rest rooms as well. A suggestion was made to get estimates for these repairs which require immediate attention.

As a result of recent thunderstorms with heavy rains, the grass has grown quite tall around the SPJST hall and needs to be mowed immediately. It was

Call (800) 727-7578 also noted that there are tree limbs, beer cans, soda cans, etc. in the tall grass which need to be picked up prior to mowing. President Pflughaupt stated that he would get someone to mow it immediately.

President Pflughaupt also suggested scheduling a lodge clean-up day for upcoming events and to spruce up the area with a SPJST Lodge 1 sign to be put up at the hall along with flag poles and flower beds. This will be discussed at the upcoming SPJST meeting.

Next Meeting August 5 Officers of both organizations plan to meet together to discuss resolutions.

The next SPJST Lodge 1 meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August 5 at 7 p.m. at Keilers Restaurant in Fayetteville. All members are invited to attend this important meeting and are asked to call President Glenn Pflughaupt (979) 378-2861 by Monday, August 2 if planning to attend.

odge 6, Cotton ood me comes aboard newest member Lodge 6, Cottonwood welcomes its newest member, Trey Evan Thompson, born May 10, 2004 to Angela and Tony Thompson at Baylor Medical Center in Grapevine. Trey weighed in at seven-pounds, nine ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. He was welcomed home by his big sister, Tina.

Proud grandparents are Dorothy and Jerry Kucera of West; Linda and Rick Exel of Michigan; and Sue and Jimmy Thompson of Duncanville, Texas. Great-grandmothers are Irene Kotrla and Josie Kucera of West.

July Meeting Report The meeting as called to order by President Ronnie Reiger at 7 p.m. on July 8. Linda read the minutes from the June meeting. They were approved. Tammy Whatley gave the treasurer's report. We had 18 members present.

We had a moment of silence for our departed members Charlie Vittek and Ray Condra.

There was one birthday—Linda Pospisil (July 29), and there was one anniversary celebrated—Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Eulenfield (July 12).

Thanks to all being expressed to these, three retirees.

New business included the barbecue cookoff will be history before this is read. Karaoke was held on Friday, July 16. Hamburgers and fries and cold refreshments at night, under the stars. Hope you attended. Saturday, July 17 will be the cookoff and you may be asked to participate by helping with judging the beef, chicken, pork ribs, or prize beans. The day will be full of activities for you to enjoy.

Sister Kohutek stated that the historical marker will be another 10 weeks or so before delivery. It will be very special after the long delay.

All officers gave their reports as did chairpersons.

Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall will be hosting the District Two Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, July 25. I hope you are planning to come to see the youth perform and exhibit their projects. Youth Leader Heidi Bartek requested that some people come early-6:30 a.m. on Sunday to get the hall ready for YAD since there is a rental on Saturday night.

Only one admitting to being older was Brother Willie E. Kohutek. He says that he is 81. Happy birthday, Willie! Happy anniversary to District Two Field Representative Zachary and Lori Kramer on their fourth wedding anniversary. Hope you celebrated that

special day in a way to remember.

Lodge 47 had a booth at the Westphalia 125th celebration in which hamburgers were sold and the youth club sold candy. Thanks for supporting them at that event. Watermelon was enjoyed by all present.

Lodge 51, Ellinger members enjoy annual dinner SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger held its annual dinner on July 11, 2004 at the Ellinger Community Center with a good turn-out. We were happy to have our District One Director Donnie and Janice Victorick and District One State Field Representative Bill Orsak with us.

Refreshments were served at 12 noon. A meal of brisket and sausage and all the trimmings was served at 12:30 p.m.

President Calvin Hlinsky welcomed

everyone. Mr. Victorick gave the table prayer. After dinner, a short meeting was held opening with a moment of silence for members recently departed, State Coordinator Activities Gladys Yates and those in the military. Mr. Victorick spoke about the recent SPJST convention which was held at the Mayborn Center in Temple, changes in life insurance and various activities in which the youth can participate. An important youth event will be held in Temple, August 7.

Mr. Orsak also spoke briefly.

Lifetime Achiever awards were presented to Edwin Hoelscher, Ellen Kubena, Edna Supak, Willie Mae Koehl, Edna and George Berkfeld.

Door prizes were presented to Odis Divin, Betty Divin, Steven Svec, Cameron Urban, Bernice Svec, Edna Supak, Edith Rek, Ashton Baurax, Angeline Bertsch, and Susie Zatopek.

Fifty-year pins were presented to Bernita Hlinsky and Helen Muras.

Winners of the prize drawing were Susie Zatopek - cooler; Calvin Hlinsky - box fan; Edith Rek - chair; Kerry Baurax - cooler; Burdine Divin - bag with games.

Lodge 88, Houston invites new, active members to family fun party, August 1 Lodge 88, Houston will be hosting a Family Fun Party on Sunday, August 1 at the lodge hall. Westfest invites tarok players to sign up for sixth annual tournament The Directors of Westfest will again host a Taroky Tournament in conjunction with the annual Westfest celebration. The tournament will be held at the West Community Center in West, Texas on Saturday, September 4, 2004.

The tournament is open to all interested taroky players, ladies, and gentlemen, 16 years of age and older.

Entry fee will be $20 per person with registration from 8 a.m. till 8:45 a.m. and play will start at 9 a.m. Play

should conclude about 4:30 p.m.

Kolaches and coffee will be served during registration. Lunch is included in the registration fee and will be served at the community center.

Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top four players. Play will continue for all players throughout the tournament. The top four players after six rounds will be awarded first, second, third, and fourth place honors.

All persons wishing to enter should pre-register by submitting their name and address to Westfest Taroky Tournament, P.O. Box 96, West, Texas 76691 before August 30, 2004 so that adequate arrangements can be made for food and seating. Late entries will be accepted if player slots are available. Vocalist Ashley Vitek to perform at CCCH gala on August 14 The Czech Cultural Center Houston (CCCH) presents its ninth annual charity gala, A Night of Czech Music, Dinner, Dance and Silent Auction IX, on Saturday, August 14, 2004 at the Warwick Hotel in Houston, Texas. This event, starting at 6 p.m., features an evening of cocktails, music, dinner, dancing, and an exciting array of auction items from locally and abroad. Entertainment will include vocalist Ashley Vitek, accompanied by composer Robert Dvorak, performances by the Charlie Prause band and commentary on "The Difference between Europeans and Americans" by guest speaker, Cathy Hollowell. This year's event, chaired

by Nell St. Cyr and Peter Fucik, will honor distinguished member, John R. Vacek. Individual ticket prices start at $100 with preferred seating available for event underwriters.

All proceeds benefit the new CCCH located at 4920 San Jacinto at Wichita in Houston's Museum District. The purpose of the CCCH is to build international good will with the Czech Republic and Slovakia thereby unifying the Czech/Slovak American community and to promote the heritage of people from Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia and Silesia. n Memoriam Mogonye Family The 34th annual family reunion of the John and Eva Dujka Mogonye family will be held on Sunday, August 1, 2004 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 401 East Eighth Street, Elgin, Texas beginning at 12 noon. The reunion will be hosted by the Bertha Mogonye Haisler family.

We would like to invite all of the Mogonye family and friends to join us for a potluck lunch, silent auction, business meeting, games, and good conversation. Please bring your favorite meat, salad and dessert dishes.

TCHCC to host historical musical on October 29, 30 in LaGrange The new Sanford Schmid Stage at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center Amphitheater in La Grange, will be the setting for the first annual production of a Historical Musical Extravaganza of Czech Immigration to Texas on Friday, October 29 and Saturday, October 30, 2004 at 7 p.m.

The first organizational meeting will be held on Friday July 30 at 7 p.m. at the amphitheater which is located adjacent to the Fayette County Fairgrounds on Highway 77 just north of Highway 71. All who dance, sing,

forge new ones and learn about their family heritage.

Villanueva, all of Dime Box, will preside over the 2004 SPJST State Royalty Competition which begins at 3:30 p.m. First place king and queen winners from the seven SPJST districts across the state of Texas will compete for scholarships and the titles of 2004-2005 SPJST State King and State Queen.

The king and queen are selected on the basis of a three-minute speech during which they are scored on content, delivery and overall poise. King and queen candidates are high school-aged SPJST youth club members.

The 2004-2005 State King and Queen will represent the SPJST at events across Texas. They will also each receive $1,000 scholarships.

Special Guest is Miss Texas Special guest at this year's SPJST State Youth Achievement Day will be Miss Texas 2004. She will be available to sign autographs following the royalty competition.

To the youn.g, people participating in the 2004 State YAD contests, please note the registration time for all contests is from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday mornin g , Au g ust 7.

Bring jewelry and expensive items at your own risk. We will not be responsible for lost or damaged items.

Dear Readers, Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club had a swim party. Friday. June 25 at

the West Playdium Pool. After swimming, Youth Leader Peggy Dobecka brought several pizzas and drinks. I am sure everyone enjoyed it.

We will set up the bingo for our annual picnic Friday, July 16. We need to also bring our prize drawing and bingo prizes. The youth club will be in charge of all this. We need to all come out and work. Hope to see everyone at camp.

We did a lot this summer already.

We got to be on the radio for Johnnie's polka show. We went to Margaret's a lot to practice for our group talent. We went to Youth Achievement Day (YAD). We went to Margaret's for Forth of July and we went to the adult meeting in July.

I didn't go to camp this year because Mommy says I'm not old enough to go by myself yet. Maybe next year. I can't wait to see what we are going to do next. Here's a joke I just learned: Where do Mummies eat? At Pizza Tut . . . Ha, ha, ha!

Dear Readers, I had fun at District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD) in Arlington on June 27. I entered in four craft categories. I won second place for a picture I drew of birds. I also won second place in photography for a picture I took of an old military tank. A patriotic lap quilt and the candy that I made each received honorable mention. I got third place in royalty with my speech "SPJST - Caring about Others." My duke was Devin Krajca.

mommy emailed Roxie Dean who sings my song for real, and she sent me a picture of her and some CDs. It was really cool. We also had a meeting for the Fourth of July at our youth leader's house. We got to do sparklers. Then on Thursday night, July 7, I got to sing my song at the adult meeting to all the members. I think they liked it.

Today, July 14, is my great-greatgrandma's 97th birthday. I think it will be real neat that she is almost 100.

And it is also my pepaw's birthday and Rachel's birthday from our youth club.

Dear Vestal( Readers, Kirby Elaine Bubela, daughter of Greg and Lisa Bubela; Chet Edward Dluhos, son of Maurice and Sue Dluhos; and Kyle Henry Kaspar, son of Leroy and Karen Kaspar, have been active members of Taiton youth club through their senior year this 2004.

Each of these active Taiton SPJST youth club members will be receiving $200 scholarships from Lodge 30, Taiton and $1,000 SPJST Leadership Award Scholarships. Kyle will also be receiving the 2002 District Six Point amd Merit Award $1,000 Scholarship.

Kirby, Chet, and Kyle have been active youth club members in the Taiton youth club since 1991. They have all three excelled in their participation over the years, their leadership avenues, and successes through the annual youth achievement days.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club members congratulate graduating seniors Kyle, Chet and Kirby. ident position. Kyle as vice-president, and Chet as second vice president. All three also served as Leaders-inTraining (LIT) and were all involved in numerous community service activities. All were active in District Six and SPJST State Youth Achievement Days, each having won individual craft first place awards. They also celebrated their Czech heritage by being a members of the youth club's Ceska Beseda dancers.

Memorable Accomplishments Possibly the most memorable accomplishments for these three graduating seniors are the group talent routines in which they participated, including the following performances for which they achieved first place honors in SPJST state competi-

tion: 1994-jitterbug line dance routine to "God Bless Texas," 1997patriotic medley dance routine, 1999jitterbug dance routine to "Rock Around the Clock," 2001-jitterbug skit routine to "Devil Went Down to Georgia," and the 2002-skit to the movie "Grease."

Kirby, Chet, and Kyle are all El Campo High School graduates. Each of them has excelled in numerous high school activities.

Dear Vestak Readers, On June 2, 2004, District One had a Schlitterbahn trip. We had about 100 people participate. I had a blast, and everyone got to hang out with their friends.

July Meeting On July 11, 2004, Lodge 186, Caldwell Youth Club had a meeting.

We discussed camp and Youth Achievement Day. We found out that 13 members from our lodge are going to camp and three adults. We had snacks then left.

State Youth Director invites members, friends to State Youth Achievement Day on Saturday, August 7 Dear Members and Friends, Summer is a time that we showcase our youth in the SPJST. Right now, our young people are preparing for District and State Youth Achievement Days. They are working hard on their crafts, talents, and royalty presentations. They are very proud to represent their lodges and their districts.

I cordially invite you to share Saturday, August 7 celebrating the young people of SPJST at State Youth Achievement Day at the Frank W. Maybom Convention Center, located at 3303 North Third Street in Temple.

You will see some of the best crafts and talents in the state of Texas. And, our teens will amaze you in the king and queen competition with their public speaking abilities.

Opening Ceremonies at 11 a.m.

The day begins with opening ceremonies at 11 a.m. An enchilada lunch, which will include enchiladas, rice, beans, chips/sauce, and tea/lemonade, will be available for $4.50 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other food will be available throughout the day.

SPJST youth who receive first place honors at their district competitions across Texas this summer will compete at the state level in various competitions, including group and individual talent, nine craft categories, a special

category, and youth club poster and scrapbook. Following judging, all crafts, special category projects, posters and scrapbooks will be displayed for the public.

The talent competition begins at 11:30 a.m. Young people ages six to high school senior will compete in dance, vocal, instrumentals and dramatics.

Prior to the talent contests, the youth will compete in a special category contest. This contest is left a surprise to all competitors until the day of the event.

Past special category contests have included play-dough construction, story-telling, and drawing.

Scholarships totaling almost $10,000 will be presented to SPJST youth members during the awards ceremony.

Videos of this year's State Youth Achievement Day featuring the talent performances, royalty speeches, and award ceremony will be available.

Silent Auction to Benefit Scholarship Fund and ENC This year's food category is candy.

Following judging, the candy will be sold in a silent auction to the highest bidders. All proceeds will go to the SPJST Scholarship Fund and the Education and Nature Center. Last year, through silent auctions at District YADs and State YAD, almost $2,000 was raised and donated to the Scholarship Fund and ENC. 2004-2005 State King and Queen to Be Crowned The state royalty competition will conclude the day. 2003-2004 SPJST State King Dale Korth, State Queen Alicia Ford, State Duke William Jatzlau, and State Duchess Amanda (Continued on page 10.)

Legal Advisor-Elect expresses thanks for support at SPJST convention I would like to thank all of the brothers and sisters for their support in electing me as SPJST Legal Advisor.

During the campaign for this year's convention, it has been an Drew Popelka extreme pleasure to meet so many of you across our great state.

I have a fervent desire to get to know all of you members who so unselfishly devote your time, talents and efforts toward the greater good of our SPJST Society. In time, I trust that this desire will become a reality.

Rest assured that this position is not taken lightly. It is with reverent You

honor that I assume the duties of this office. There are currently more laws and regulations governing the SPJST than there have ever been in its prolific history. However, with careful planning and attention to detail, I plan on offering the Board and our Society sound, well-reasoned legal advice.

As in any democratic election, depending on which side a person supports there is either jubilation or disappointment concerning the outcome. Now that the convention is over and the delegates have spoken, I hope that all members will unite together to pursue our common cause, the betterment of the SPJST. For as Abraham Lincoln so eloquently stated, "The house divided against itself cannot stand."

The SPJST has enjoyed a proud history during its century of existence. Thank you for allowing me to work toward a memorable future.

SPJST records 2278 applications written through June in Join Hands 2004 program Through the end of February, the SPJST had received 2278 applications for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Join Hands 2004 membership drive is to write at least 2,345 applications in 2004.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through June 30, 2004.
