SPJST delegates revise By Laws elect officers, directors, standing committees at 29th convention Delegates representing 85 lodges from across Texas convened in Temple June 13 - 16 for the SPJST's Twenty-Ninth Quadrennial Convention.

A summary of significant convention actions and election results follows: Convention Highlights Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar called the Twenty-Ninth Convention to order. Helen Hegwood (88) followed by leading the convention in the National Anthem, The StarSpangled Banner and the Czech National Anthem, Kde Dotnov 1VJuI, followed by greetings from District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer. City of Temple Mayor Bill Jones, III welcomed SPJST members to Temple and issued a proclamation designating June 14, 15 and 16, 2004 as "SPJST Days" in Temple.

A memorial acknowledgement was then presented by President Leshikar in memory of departed Honorary District One Director Andrew Vavra and other departed members.

Monday morning's agenda included a Flag Day tribute, including the presentation of the Colors by the Temple Fire Department Honor Guard. Emil Matula, Sr. (133) led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a Flag Day tribute by Colonel Terry Walters of Fort Hood.

The Flag Day program continued with the announcement of the Flag Day coloring and essay contests by State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny. SPJST State Queen Alicia Ford (13) was read the winning Flag Day essay by Tyler Susan of Lodge 48, Beyersville. SPJST State King Dale Korth (13) performed the song Letters from Home.

Ruth Hanusch (47) followed, leading the delegates in patriotic song. President Leshikar capped the program by inviting all SPJST veterans to come forward and be recognized. Brother Leshikar also recognized the youngest delegates in attendance — Michelle Popp (133) and Bobby Cast (247), both age 21.

The oldest delegate was Betty Jurica at 89 years.

Credential Committee Chairman Darlene Engelke (66) reported that a total of 285 delegates, representing 85 lodges and 37,263 votes were seated

Wednesday, June 30, 2004—VESTNIK/3 Amend Article 7, Item A, relating to the mailing and return of a referendum ballot, to read as follows:

SPJST Convention (Continued from page 1.)

(a) The regular convention is held once every four years in compliance with the laws of the State of Texas.

If a matter arises between conventions that needs the approval of the delegates, the Supreme Lodge may conduct a referendum by polling the delegates by secret ballot by mail, delegates being allowed the same number of votes determined at the previous convention. Such action will be accompanied by an adequate explanation. The procedure for the secret ballot is determined by the Supreme Lodge. The proposed ByLaw amendment must be mailed to the delegates at least 45 days before the ballots must be returned.

By-Laws Revised For the next day-and-a-half, delegates reviewed the recommendations of the By-Law Committee.

The following is a summary of significant By-Law revisions which were enacted.

• Amend Article 1, Section K, to read as follows: (k) The word "Associate Member" means a person who holds an SPJST policy purchased through an outside agency under contract with the SPJST selling Group Insurance.

This member will not have society or local lodge privileges, benefits or voting rights.

Amend Article 15, regarding ByLaw changes, to read as follows:

• Amend Article 3, Section G, by deleting the words "medical examiner." The revised article will read as follows:

"All new By-Laws become effective on July 1, following the convention at which they were adopted, except those particular by-laws the convention voted to become effective immediately by a two-thirds vote. Effective immediately."

(g) "Authorize the Supreme Lodge to employ an actuary, a state youth director, a state fraternal activities coordinator and all necessary assistants for administration of Society affairs, buy necessary equipment, furniture and supplies, and decide what donations will be made to various charities, and educational institutions, etc."

Amend Article 18, regarding participation on standing committees, to read as follows: Members of the Supreme Lodge, their spouses, or employees of the SPJST Home Office are not eligible for membership on any standing committee, but they are free to attend the committee meetings, make suggestions and recommendations, and assist the committees in every way possible. The committee has the right to deliberate and hold executive sessions during which the persons mentioned in this section would not be present.

• Amend Article 4, Section 4, Item E3, regarding qualifications to serve as a delegate to the convention, to read as follows: 3. "Attended the majority of the regular meetings during the three years preceding the convention.

When there is a conflict with the date of their local lodge meeting, the state youth director, district youth counselors and their assistants attending youth club meetings, state and district field representatives, and state and district fraternal activities coordinator, on official business, may count as attending a regular meeting for this purpose.

• Amend Article 23, which relates to the duties of the Insurance Committee, to read as follows:

"When there is a conflict with the date of their local lodge meeting, Supreme Lodge members attending official functions of the Society qualify as attending a regular meeting for this purpose.

"Notification must be given to the local lodge secretary prior to the event with written confirmation made by the party within two weeks following the event."

"The Insurance Committee has the right to meet as requested by the Vice President with one meeting six months prior to the convention to consider By-Law recommendations. They will also provide input to the Supreme Lodge Vice President on products and innovative ideas. Members of this committee will receive compensation for attending such meetings as adopted by the preceding convention, and will function during the succeeding convention. The members of the insurance committee will represent the society by promoting

Delegates approve By-Law Committee recommendations

the insurance programs and products and participate in the lodge and district functions to inform the membership on the matters pertaining to the insurance department.

Amend Article 28, Item A, relating to the assumption of official duties for elected officials to read as follows: (a) Members of the Supreme Lodge and editor and director of communication assume duties of their respective offices on August 1.

Amend Article 32, Item A, relating to Supreme Lodge meetings, to read as follows: (a) "Regular meetings of the Supreme Lodge are held quarterly, the third week or weekend in January, April, July and October. In case of necessity, the president has the right to change the date of the meeting. Eight members of the Supreme Lodge will constitute a quorum at regular meetings."

Amend Article 33, Section 16, relating to the printing of the Vestnik, to read as follows: "To negotiate a contract on an annual basis, if deemed beneficial, for the publishing of the Vestnik, after consultation with a member of the Publication Committee designated by that committee, and the editor and director of communication.

• Amend Article 40, Item D, which relates the duties of the office of Financial Secretary, to read as follows: "He publishes quarterly in the Vestnik an audited account of income and expenses on forms approved by the directors.

• Delegates reviewed the presentation handout on Article 43(n) which dealt with assigning SPJST district boundaries. After discussion, delegates voted to refer the matter to the Supreme Lodge for further consideration and to report back to the delegates at the next convention.

Delegates were asked to review the presentation handout on Article 43 (n) in order to achieve a better understanding of the proposed redistricting plan as it will be discussed•at the 2008 convention.

• Amend Article 45, Item I, J and K which relates youth program alloca tions, to read as follows:

Three recommendations made by the By-Law Committee were approved by delegates to the Twenty-Ninth SPJST Convention.

In presenting these recommendations, the By-Law Committee acknowledged tht they are not directly related to the By-laws, but are "of great importance as far as the direction of which our Society is to take."

1. That the SPJST automobiles shall proudly display the logo of our Society. State Field Representatives' vehicles must be used for SPJST business only.

2. Utilize standing committees, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, and Youth Counselors to promote more informative communication between the Home Office, districts and local lodges.

3. Encourage continuing education, training, and certification for Supreme Lodge members and employees in order to enhance job performance and service to the Society.

— SPJST — (i) The Supreme Lodge contributes, annually, to the Youth Fund an amount per year set by the delegates on recommendation of the Finance Committee. This will be based on every insured member who has attained the age of 16 years. This sum will be distributed to the Districts with 80 percent going to the District Youth Fund, but not less than five hundred ($500.00) dollars to each district and 20 percent going to the local lodge youth clubs. This distribution will be based on each District's and youth club's annual average of quarterly report totals submitted to the State Youth Director. These amounts must be used for the benefit of the youth. (j) Each district will receive an allocation of $3,500 per year from the Supreme Lodge to be placed in the district's General Expense Fund.

This sum is to be used by the district to pay the lodge hosting the District Meeting $750 per meeting with the balance being used to defray the expenses of the district and to promote growth for the Society. • Amend Article 90, which is the section explaining "designated beneficiaries," to include "estate" as a beneficiary if the designated beneficiary predeceases the insured or is not legally entitled to receive the proceeds of the certificate.

• Amend Article 92, Item A and C, which explaining funeral expenses, to read as follows: "(a) Funeral expenses where the member so designates in his application for membership or in change of beneficiary, and the face amount of the certificate not to exceed the extent of $10,000 where the member does not mention any sum for his funeral expense in his application for membership, or in any change of beneficiary, may be paid for his funeral expenses. (c) Should the local lodge be unable to locate and contact the beneficiary when a certificate matures because of death of the insured, or in the event the designated beneficiary predeceases the insured or is not legally entitled to receive the proceeds of the certificate, then the local lodge or the Supreme Lodge may guarantee payment of expenses of burial of such a deceased insured up to the face amount of the certificate not to exceed $10,000. This amount shall become a charge against this certificate of the deceased insured, and such amount shall be deducted from the proceeds of said certificate and be retained by the Society and paid to the local lodge or to the person, firm or corporation to whom such guarantee was made. Upon request, the beneficiary or beneficiaries shall be shown a statement of the funeral expenses of the deceased-insured.

• Amend Article 94, which relates to the printing of the Vestnik to read as follows: "The official publication of the Society is called the `Vestnik.' The `Vestnik' shall be printed weekly in color and sent to all premium-paying members and to all members on request. The Supreme Lodge bears the expense in connection with the publication. Where more than one member resides in one family only one issue is mailed there. Names and addresses of members who wish to receive the ‘Vestnik' must be furnished to the Supreme Lodge.

Schools, colleges and universities offering and instructing the Czech language for credit will receive the "Vestnik" free on request.

• Amend Article 95, Item A, which relates to the contents of the Vestnik to read as follows: (a) The contents of the "Vestnik" and the SPJST Internet Website are managed by the editor and director of communication, elected by the

Convention. The editor and director of communication must be a SPJST member, possess journalistic qualifications, have knowledge of the Czech and English languages, be responsible for a Czech and English section in the "Vestnik," and be well-versed in media law, especially as this relates to privacy concern issues and libel.

• Amend Article 96, Item G, which relates to the publication of questionable material in the "Vestnik." (g) The publication Committee will decide about objectionable contributions in the following manner: If the editor and director of communication considers any matter questionable or harmful to the Society, he shall mail a copy of the doubtful material to each member of the Publication Committee, who shall respond by return mail. If the material is considered acceptable by four members of the committee, the editor and director communication will present the article to the Supreme Lodge Officers for final approval before publishing the article in its entirety, without comment or remarks. No letter may be published in its censored form without the written consent of the writer. Objectionable material will be returned to the writer by the editor and director of communication. If the editor and director of communication fails to submit material turned down by him, the writer may submit the letter to the chairman of the Publication Committee and the decision of the Publication Committee will control over the opinion of the editor and director of communication.

Authorize the Supreme Lodge to pay 100 percent of the actual purchase price of a new van, not to exceed $42,000.

Other Approved Finance Committee Recommendations (1). Officers, Directors, Editor, Members on Standing Committees, and other or the authorized personnel using a personal car for the use of the Society work and are authorized to travel for the Society, be paid 37.5 cents per mile, or the IRS adjusted rate at time of travel.

(2). Officers, Directors, Editor, Members on Standing Committees, and other authorized personnel doing work for the Society, be paid actual cost of meals, not to exceed $25 per day, plus lodging expense.

(3). $5,000 one time allocation for the restoration of the SPJST building and cemetery in Velehrad. (The history of the building was printed in the Vestnik).

(4). $3,000 lump sum allocation for the up keep of the SPJST Cemeteries, and give the authority to disburse and administer these funds to the Supreme Lodge.

(5). Authorize the Supreme Lodge to reimburse hosting entities for pre-convention activities and refreshments during the convention. Arrangements will be coordinated with the Supreme Lodge.

(6). Authorize the Supreme Lodge to pay the cost of Group Healthcare coverage for the spouse of Supreme Lodge officers and employees who retire with 30 years or more of service with the SPJST, however, the amount paid for such retiree's healthcare coverage will not exceed the standard premium for an active employee under the age of 65 years.

(7). Delegates and all other parties under remunerations and recommendations get paid for the actual days of the convention. (Three days) Delegates also authorized the Supreme Lodge to allocate $3,000 annually to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc. (LaGrange) an the Czech Cultural Center (Houston) and $1,500 to the American Sokol Organization (Southern District).

Other Standing Committee Reports On Wednesday, reports were delivered to the convention by the other standing committees. Reporting on behalf of the Publication Committee was Chairman Jarolyn Popp of Lodge 133, San Antonio. She stated that the only recommendation that the committee had was to print the Vestnik in color and she thanked delegates for approving it. The Publication Committee also expressed its thanks to Editor and Director Communications Brian Vanicek for his work with the committee over the years.

Reporting on behalf of the Insurance Committee was Vice Chairman Jerome Hlavaty of Lodge 153, La Salle. He introduced Insurance Committee member Susan Skrabanek of Lodge 17, New Tabor who stated that most of the recommended By-Law changes were state mandated and that all had been approved by the convention. The then read the committee recommendations for the Supreme Lodge, stated the goals of the Insurance Committee and thanked Supreme Lodge Vice President for helping their committee make recommendations and set goals.

Please note that the complete text of both the Insurance Committee and Publication Committee will appear as a part of the official proceedings of the 2004 Convention. The official proceedings will also include the complete reports of the By-Laws Committee, Finance Committee, Supreme Lodge Officers and Directors.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. with play scheduled to being at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $20 per person. The entry fee includes noon meal, snacks and prizes. The tournament will include six one-hour rounds of play. You must be 18 to play in the tournament.

Lodge 24, Cyclone met on a rainbowed night at Flag Hall on June 7.

The meeting was preceded by a meal gotten together by Brian and Joan Vanicek.

President Brian Vanicek called the meeting to order at 6:58 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silent prayer was held. The minutes were read by Secretary Ginger Greger. The minutes were approved as corrected.

Jay Ray and Jeff Bartek won first place in the horseshoe contest.

Barbara Macek gave the treasurer's report. Wilbert Mikeska gave the hall and bar reports. The hall is really busy this time of the year.

The youth club went hiking at Miller Springs and met at Lion's Pool on June 12.

Cyclone-Marak Knights of Columbus has rented the hall on June 19 and Ocker Church will have its Father's Day fund raiser on June 20.

Member appreciation will be on July 12 at the Dynasty Restaurant on Air Port Road in Temple. Time is 7 p.m.

Linda Wilde and her husband, Daniel, had their 28th anniversary at a dance played by the Vrazel Polka Band.

Birthdays were Janet and Shawn Ashcraft. Pat Vanicek's birthday is June 9.

TC Taylor will play at the hall on June 25.

Members should check with Wilbert about chairs—the old heavy ones.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The regular June 2004 meeting was held on Sunday, June 1 at 2 p.m. with President Edwin Pechal in charge.

Edwin Vasicek and Edward Mares brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing and paid tribute to our member Diann Hopkins, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates, and to all veterans of all wars. Deepest sympathy to the Hopkins/Henderson and Yates families. I know you are missing your loved ones.

Secretary Adeline Kohutek read the roll call officers, trustees and sales representatives. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved as read. The new members accepted were Thomas E. Chamberlin, David W. Coufal, Russell W. Coufal, Robert Joseph Trampota, Colton Joseph Grzykowski, and Deborah Trampota.

We also had a transfer from Lodge 200 to Lodge 47— Skyler William Larson.

We welcome you all to Lodge 47 and hope you come to meetings and other activities.

We had received a request from the American Cancer Society for a dona tion. We voted to send a $100 donation at this time.

We received a thank you from Rogers High School and the Junior Class of 2004 for the use of the hall for the Junior/Senior Prom and for the sports banquet held at Star Hall.

SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger met for its quarterly meeting at the Ellinger Fire Station on June 17 at 6:30 p.m.

We were happy to have District One Director Donnie and Janice Victorick of Snook with us.

President Calvin Hlinsky called the meeting to order. Secretary Jo Ann Divin read the minutes and gave the financial report both of which were approved.

A moment of silent prayer was offered in memory of State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates who recently passed away as well as for the military.

The cookbook fund raiser was discussed and it was decided to order another case to be sold.

The annual dinner that will be held July 11 was discussed. The meal as was served before will be served.

Members will be charged $1 per plate, and guests will be charged $5 per plate.

Fifty-year pins will be given to Helen Muras and Bernita Hlinsky.

Lifetime Achiever awards will also be presented.

Two new members have been acquired.

Burdine Divin, delegate to the 29th convention in Temple, gave a report on the convention. Donnie and Janice Victorick also reported on the convention.

The meeting then adjourned.

Officers' Reports President Pechal asked all fathers to please stand. Happy Father's Day to all! President Pechal stated that the filters were all replaced, and the fans have been installed recently.

Beth reiterated that Gladys Yates is being missed because of the tremendous help to the local FACs with paperwork.

The youth club was going to meet before the picnic.

Frank Klinkovsky gave a brief account of the convention Howdy Party at Lodge 80, Holland and the delegates' dinner and dance at Star Hall on Monday, June 14.

Under new business, we voted to donate $100 to the District Two Camp Fund in the food department.

Birthdays in June were Frank Klinkovsky, Nelda Marek, and Rosemary Chudej. Wedding anniversaries were celebrated by Frank and Irma Klinkovsky and Rosemary and Tony Chudej. Door prize winners were Edward Mares, EJ Pechal, Jr., Drew Popelka, and Willie E. Kohutek.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, July 6 at 7 p.m. with watermelon furnished by the lodge.

President Patricia Bruce opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

The invocation was given by Chaplain Sydney Jurchak as well as the Pledge of Allegiance. The names of de,ceqged members were read: Jennie Mae Frank and Gwendolyn Bednar. moment of silence was held in their

memory.

The roll call of officers was read.

All officers present with the exception of Second Vice President Viola Cox, Recording Secretary Flo Orsag and Secretary-Treasurer Roberta Johnson.

Minutes from the May, 2004 meeting were read and approved.

Clara Broz read the profit and loss statement for the month of May, 2004.

Correspondence was read which consisted of a thank you note from Janet Rawlinson, President of Lodge 162 for the help and support Lodge 88 gave at the Iowa Colony Fire Department's Benefit.

Officers' Reports President Patricia Bruce called an Executive Board Meeting, June 9 at 7:30 pm to discuss the awards party which is scheduled for July. President Bruce then reported on the results of Homecoming which was a huge success. The final figures were not available on Monday night but will be reported at the July meeting.

First Vice President Carolyn Filipp commented on the great turn out for Homecoming Day. She called attention to June as the month for fathers and read a touching verse in their honor. She reported on the future activities locally and from the Home Office. She expressed her sincere sympathy to the family of Gladys Yates, the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, who passed away.

Youth Club — Barbara L. Gonzales reported on the growth in the youth club with four new members. The youth sold ice cream at Homecoming and did very well. District Youth Achievement Day (YAD) is scheduled for June 27 at Lodge 172 in Pasadena and Barbara asked the members to come and support the youth. The youth are getting ready for camp on July 16 through 18 at Camp Long Star in La Grange.

Sergeant-at-Arms Johnny Broz, reported we have 13 door prizes.

Committee Reports Entertainment Chairperson, Betty Theiss reported Homecoming was great success. Everyone had great fun.

She then reviewed the upcoming dance schedule.

Social Night Chairperson Sherry Miller was absent and reporting was Pat Bruce who said we still need volunteers on Thursday nights. It is now necessary for workers to register with the state and you are required to wear a badge they issue. Also this registration will permit you to work other bingo games.

Chairman of the Board John Broz reported the repairs recommended by the Health Department are now complete. The board is looking at repairing the back fence and also the repairs to the canopy. The board is reviewing expenses and looking into a variety of ways to cut cost in various areas. John also congratulated all the workers who made Homecoming a great success and how rewarding it was to see so many people come out for the day.

Audit Committee Chairperson Marceil Malak reported the March and April books were audited and found to be in order. Marceil motioned they be accepted. The second was by Marie Stayton. Motion carried.

Kitchen Committee — Chairman Dennis Roeder thanked all who helped at Homecoming. Birthday Club Chairman Marie Stayton thanked all who contributed to the success of the pastry booth on Homecoming.

Blue Room Party — Betty Theiss reported the next party will be held August 22 and the tickets will be on sale July 13 through August 13.

Bobby Jones will play and cost is $15 per person. Menu will be reported in July.

Men's Club — A.J. Stayton reported there will be clean up day on June 16.

Scholarship Committee — Carol Havemann requested Britt Adamcik to come forward to receive his scholarship. A thank you note was read from Shelly Stevens for the scholarship she received.

Choral Club — Fred Buri thanked all who preformed at Homecoming.

Concert Orchestra — Jim Rohde reported they delivered a good performance at Homecoming and had lots of fun.

Report of District Officers District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt reported he had the opportunity to present two scholarships from the Home Office to Britt Adamcik and Nicole Alexander. He also reported the "tax exemption" issue is not over, and hopes something can be done to reduce our taxes. He recognized the Home Office scholarship recipients that were present, Natalie Zalesky and Britt Adarncik.

Larry announced his candidacy for SPJST President and gave a brief speech.

Mildred Holeman — The District Five President reported after the convention she will begin planning for the district. State Field Representative Lynne Johnson reported all insurance sales information across the district.

Reading of names of applicants and transfers: One transfer from Lodge 88, Brooks Eubanks, to the Home Office.

Sick members were Viola Cox, Lowrina Lindemann, Flo Orsag and Lynn Pflughaupt Old Business Report on the convention delegates: Lowrina Lindemann cannot attend therefore we revert to the alternates, Benny Kocich cannot attend, Helen Kubicek cannot attend, Mildred Holeman will be our delegate attending the convention.

New Business Johnny Broz reported the display case has pictures form the dedication of the Salvation Army's "Marie Barbara Beck Learning Center" funded by Paul Beck in honor of his late sister Marie Barbara Beck.

Scholarship procedures were discussed and according to the committee they review all applications according to the rules and regulations governing the scholarships and then make their decision on awarding these scholarships.

Leander Pflughaupt suggested members check with their insurance

company about the discount being offered with the AARP defensive driving course. Some companies have discontinued this practice.

Guide Josephine Pflughaupt reported 80 members and two guests present.

She read the list of birthdays and anniversaries for the month of June and a list of beverage donors — Tom and Agnes Haney, Karl and Ora Nell Hassebrock, King and Helen Hegwood and Donnie and Carol Havemann Door prizes went to Tom Marsh, Pat Bruce, Ed Lorenz, Celestine Darilek, Evelyn Zajicek, Barbara Gonzales, Jo Ann Buri, Margaret Allbritton, Myriam Zalesky, Earline Hoffman, Clarence Baca, Ray Krampota and Ora Nell Hassebrock.

91, Crosby hosts summer social July 10

The trustees' meeting was reported on by Albert Kubala. A new ice machine was purchased for the bar.

The old machine needed major repairs and it was decided that the machine was not worth saving. Thank you to Joyce for obtaining bids in such a timely manner as to have the machine in time for the Czech dinner.

It was decided to not have a dance at the hall on Sunday, July 4. We hope everyone will come to the Czech dance on July 18.

Next Meeting July 11 Our next lodge meeting will be Sunday, July 11 at the regular time of 2 p.m. We hope Gordon and Cheryl Hubenak will be able to attend. Cheryl has been laid up due to an accident.

We hope she is recovering nicely.

92, Fort Worth getting ready for Czech Heritage Day Lodge

The June meeting of Lodge 92 was held on Sunday, June 6. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Martha Durham, in the absence of the president. We had 28 members present on this early time and early day.

Norma McClendon served as the Vice President stand-in. The Pledge of Allegiance was said by the members. The minutes of the May meeting were approved as printed. The treasurer's report was filed for audit, as printed.

It was reported that there were about 35 volunteers who helped at the Czech dinner and dance last month. It was deemed a success as more money came in than went out. Sister Durham asked for volunteers to sign up for the upcoming Czech Heritage Day to be held here at the hall on Saturday, September 18. More information will be coming later. Please think about helping with this fun day.

Doris Overstreet resigned from the Dance Committee. Helen Kubala was appointed to take her place. The Dance Committee is now made up of Albert Kubala, Helen Kubala, Frank

97, Placedo reports on June meeting

Lodge 97, Placedo held a meeting on June 11, 2004 at the Victoria REA Building. A wonderful barbecue dinner was enjoyed by all. Many thanks go to the members who brought the delicious desserts.

President Yvonne Garrett called the meeting to order. The youth club led the Pledge of Allegiance. A brief moment of silence was held in memory of the late former President Ronald Reagan and in memory of the late State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates.

The minutes were read by Secretary LaNail Olsovsky and approved. Treasurer Dennis Vanek gave a financial report. Soda pull tabs were collected and given to District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom to take to the SPJST Home Office to help with the McDonald House fund raiser.

District Director Mike Ahlstrom gave a status report and discussed the upcoming convention. He is excited about running for Supreme Lodge President. Our delegates are Charles

and Yvonne Garrett. Brother Ahlstrom also applauded the sales efforts for reaching over half of the quota for this year. The quota is 55 new members. Currently, 31 new members have been accepted.

Youth Leader Donna Vanek gave a youth club report and reported on the upcoming Youth Achievement Day held in Taiton. The youth are planning a bowling party for July. We took a picture outside the REA building to publish in the Vestnik, showing the flourishing flower bed that the Victoria and Placedo Youth clubs planted two years ago for Make A Difference Day. The beautiful blue and red blooms greeted everyone as they passed.

Guest speaker was Second Vice President Jackie Reid. She is one of three KAVU-25 weather watchers.

She encouraged members to sign up for this rewarding position. She distributed current weather charts and supporting pamphlets with helpful information for hurricane preparation.

Everyone learned from her speech as she attended the local hurricane conference and spoke on her personal experiences from living in Florida.

196, Houston-West reports on May meeting Lodge

Following a potluck luncheon on May 23, 2004, President Cecelia Malek called the meeting to order at 2:56 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Bill Haak. A moment of silence was held for Mary E. Peterek who died June 2, 2003.

Johnnie Haak's greeter's report showed we had 14 adults, three youth, and one guest, Doris Plagens, in attendance. Andrew Kidwilder also attended.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Danny Nedbalek for May 14 and Jack Manchack for May 24. April anniversary congratulations were given to Bill and Mary Lee Machacek for 48 years, and Bill and Johnnie Haak for 52 years.

Roll call showed all officers were present. The minutes were approved with corrections. The treasurer's report was approved.

Officers' Reports Secretary - transfer was received for Doris Plagens and Clinton N. Rimek, Stephanie Mercedes Leos, David Christian Leos, Lasaro Arispe, and Albina M. Reat are applicants for membership into Lodge 196.

Lynn Johnsen moved, seconded by Betty Louis, to accept all five new applicants and transfer into Lodge 196.

Motion passed. Lynn Johnsen moved, seconded by Robert Castillo, that we accept Doris Plagens as a Sales Representative for our lodge.

Motion passed.

Treasurer - sent check to IRS for 2003 Income Tax. Special Tax Location Registration Listing due by July 1, 2004. Lynn Johnsen moved that we have a bar profit report and that the information be made available at the June meeting. Motion passed. The main reason is to see if we're making a profit.

FAC Betty Louis - camp tee-shirts are a good way to advertise our youth club; she's having a Memorial Service today for the 32 members we've lost since Lodge 196 was chartered. We will remember mothers with a poem and recognize mothers who will have first choice of the flowers. Betty said it's suggested that we have a Father's Day project for June to honor them. A date was discussed, but no date was decided upon.

Lynn Johnsen moved, seconded by Betty Louis, that the lodge buy a

quarter sheet cake when our lodge chooses to honor the fathers.

Youth Leader Robert Castillo LIT training in June. District Five YAD at Lodge 172, Pasadena is June 27 which is our next lodge meeting so he won't be here. He said we'll have Challenge Day again at the District Five Fall Meeting. Whoever wins the trophy gets to keep it for a year. It's a lot of fun for the kids.

Old Business Motions passed that the lodge not require anyone to be a certified server/trainer, and that the lodge not require a certified server/trainer at our rentals.

New Business Motion passed not to change the rental contract, but add the the rest of the rules.

District Five State Field Representative Lynn Johnsen gave her report.

President Malek presented the 2004 General Scholarship award to Andrew Michael Kidwilder who is the grandson of Bill and Mary Lee Machacek. He is attending Texas Southern University.

Two door prizes were awarded.

Club Sisters of Lodge 88, Houston report on June meeting Birthday

The meeting started at 11:15 a.m. by President Marie Stayton with a prayer

by Mary Kosut and the Pledge of Allegiance by all.

Secretary Bette Hurta read the minutes from May meeting and passed.

She called the roll call with 22 members.

Vice President Evelyn Zajicek asked for kitchen help for July, and they are Willie Mae Pechacek, and Louise Jacob. Tea will be Mary Kosut.

Evelyn Zajicek asked for cake bakers, and they are Mary Kosut, Evelyn Gutkowski, and Oranell Hassebrook.

Sunshine Committee — Mary Kosut sent get well cards to Edna Wehring, Josephine Buri, and Helen Hegwood. Mary also sent birthday cards to Flo Orsag, Josephine Bun, Margie Anders, Lydia Marsh, and Louise Jacob. In June, Mary sent a birthday card to Evelyn Zajicek.

Thank you, Mary, I am speaking for all of the club. Thank you again. Mary Kosut, you are doing a very good job.

In that Mary Quider was absent, the treasurer's was not delivered.

Ticket Chairman Bessie Dewer thanked everyone for bringing gifts for the table.

Old business included the announcement that the bus was cancelled for Austin because there were not enough people going to Austin.

Talking about a trip again. Don't know where. Also talking about a project of raising money like having a garage sale or renting a booth. It is up in the air yet.

New member is Willie Mae Pechacek. We are so happy to have you with us. Calcutta was won by Bette Hurta, Ora Nell Hassebrook, and Marie Stayton. On the sick list are Lowrina Lindeman, Mary Quider, and Ho Orsag.

President Marie Stayton wants to thank all the birthday sisters and Lodge 88 for working so hard on homecoming day.

Fort Worth Friendship Club report for June meeting The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at St. Thomas Parish Hall for its monthly meeting.

There were 25 members present. We had many members absent due to their having had trees uprooted, limbs broken, and no electricity due to the terrible storm Fort Worth suffered the night before. Later several reported that their electricity did not come on until Saturday or Sunday.

The meeting was called to order by President Alice Barnes who welcomed everyone and thanked Joe Kozel for providing the beautiful music before the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all which was followed by a poem, "Be a Friend," read by Alice.

Secretary Kathy Ormsbee read the minutes from the April meeting, and in the absence of Treasurer Linda Horner, President Alice read the financial report. Both were accepted as presented.

Sunshine Person Lydia Alholm reported sending a get well card to Tracy Horn who suffered a broken wrist in an auto accident with Alice Barnes.

Alice wasn't hurt, but her car was totaled. Tracy sent thanks for all the for the cards and calls she was receiving.

Lydia further reported on the death of Dagmar "Doris" Layton, a longtime' past member, Our sympathy goes out

to her family.

Annie Whitsell reported Bessie Brezina is doing well following her surgery, is able to go to church, and sent thanks for all the calls and cards she received. Annie further reported that in July, we have our eating out social. Our next little gift exchange will be in August.

Alice reported reservations have been made for our July social at Ryan's Steak House on Cherry Lane.

Everyone will be met at the door by Mary Ann and Joe Kozel who will give you a ticket for lunch, and the room behind the dessert counter has been reserved for us. How lucky we will be.

Our room is right behind the dessert counter! Doors open at 11 a.m.

Everyone will be expected to come with a good appetite. It was decided not to return to St. Thomas hall for games following lunch.

Alice also reported that the SPJST Lodge 92 Ladies Circle has invited us to join them on a bus trip to Oklahoma to visit the casinos. If anyone is interested in going, be sure to let Alice know.

Door prizes were brought by Annie Whitsell and Libbie Vrla. Lucky winners were Ima Lou Crider and Mary Ann Kozel.

Hostesses Lillie Kosarek, Betty Landsfeld, and Libbie Vrla were thanked. The tables were decorated with white periwinkle plants with the United States flag. The main food table also had a flag display in the center.

The flowers with flags were given away as door prizes. Everyone was reminded that June 6 is D-Day, June 14 is Flag Day, and June 20 is Father's" Day. The flag should be flown on all these days in honor of our Veterans and fathers.

After the meeting was adjourned, Joe Kozel led the grace, and a wonderful luncheon was enjoyed. Then games were played and a good time was had by all.

News of Members Rosie Steinman and Carrie Milan reported having a great weekend in Ennis at the National Polka Festival.

Rosie rode on the main float in the parade, was photographed by the news media, had her picture in the Ennis Daily News, and was interviewed by the television media. They attended the polka mass, enjoyed all the polka bands, and especially enjoyed visiting with everyone. Rosie passed out photos she took of everyone the year before, and I am sure she took lots more to pass out next year.

Rose Cuba had minor surgery and hear that she doing well. Glad to hear that all went well.

Sony to hear that Martha Boenisch fell and broke her arm. Get well wishes to out to you!

Joe and Mary Ann Kozel along with Mary Ann's brother and his wife, Frank and Marilyn Popp and sister and brother in-law, Tina and Willie Hubenak, just returned from an eight-day Alaskan cruise of the Inside Passage. They visited Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Tracy Atm and Victoria British Columbia. In Juneau, they took a helicopter ride over four glaciers and were even able to land so that they could walk around. Joe said that surprisingly the ice was not slick, but rather, it was pitted much like walking on fine gravel. The helicopter ride was a gift from their children.

Mary Ann said Alaska is beautiful with

10/VESTNIK —Wednesday, June 30, 2004 snow-capped mountains, beautiful trees, sparkling waters, and magnificent waterfalls. They said the air is so clean.

In other ports, they did a lot of sightseeing and always enjoyed the view.

There was not a lot of wildlife to be seen, but they did see a few eagles soaring in the sky. They said it was a wonderful trip, and now, they want to go again to visit the other areas.

Apparently, they kept their bags packed, as now they left for the Popp family reunion at Nada, Texas. Mary Ann is actually from Garwood, Texas. I am sure they enjoyed all the visiting with relatives.

Willie Mae Becan and family attended the Hejl family reunion with the dedication of the 1 th-year memorial celebrating the immigration of the Hejl family to America. The event was at the St. Joseph's Hall in West, Texas with father Vincent performing the dedication at the graveside at St. Mary's Cemetery. Willie Mae said the potluck lunch was enjoyed by all, lots of pictures were taken, many memories shared, the auction was a lot of fun, visiting was just most enjoyable.

Willie Mae is also most proud of her granddaughter, Emily (Jennifer's daughter) who just graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington and will now attend Texas Wesleyan University Law School on a $10,000 scholarship she received.

Congratulations and best wishes in your continued studies.

Annie Whitsell spoke of her Caribbean cruise which was a gift from her daughter for her 80th birthday. She and her daughter arrived in Galveston on Saturday, and at midnight decided to call the rectory to see what time mass would be the next morning thinking an answering machine would come on.

But, no, they had awakened the priest, but he graciously gave them the time.

They did apologize to him the next morning. Their first stop was Key West then due to bad weather, they sailed right past the Grand Canyon on to Cozumel where the weather was nice.

They had a delightful time shopping.

On board ship, they enjoyed all the shows and entertainment, Annie said she won 365 nickels, and said the food was especially wonderful.

Lii Kosarek and I attended the graduation of Ben Kosarek (Lil's grandson) from Midway High School in Hewitt (Waco). Ben graduated with high honors and plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin. Congratulations, Ben. am so proud of you! I still remember attending Ben's kindergarten graduation where they sang this song, "We're the Class of 2004." Time does go by quickly.

Several of our members attended the Southern District Sokol Slet held at Boswell High School gymnasium recently. Rosie Steinman, Sharron Connelly, Anna Marie Moncrief, and I even participated in the program. It was a lot of fun!

I have just heard that Rose Nieswiadomy fell at home and is spending a few days at All Saints Hospital. Lucky no bones were broken.

Get well son, Rose!

Don't forget, lunch at Ryan's Steak House on July 7. There will be no meeting—just party time so come with a big appetite. See you there.

Ladies Circle of Fort Worth reports on June meeting It was nice to have Joe Kozel here again to serenade us with his accordion. As usual, the meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance at 10:40 a.m.

There were 27 ladies, one guest, Riley, and six gentlemen present.

The secretary's report was given and approved. Two thank you notes were read from members. The treasurer's report was approved. Pauline reported that she has banked $148.48 profit from the cookbook sales. We still have some petty cash and seven books to sell. We hope to sell them at our Czech Heritage Day celebration.

Mary Ann Kozel reported on a group trip to Windstar. We decided to wait to make a decision on this trip.

We had a discussion about having a "pastry booth" at our Czech Heritage celebration. Motion was made by Ann Schnieder and seconded by Kitty Rippen that we have it. The motion passed, and I agreed to be chairperson of the project again.

Joyce Tesar reported there would not be a dance on Father's Day nor on the Fourth of July. The next dance will be July 18 from 2 to 6 p.m.

Our only birthday member at our meeting was Helen Kubala. Happy birthday and many more.

Door prizes were won by Betty Loyd, Helen Kubala, Gloria Farik, Joyce Tesar, Monalee Hattendorf, Betty Jean Lewellan, Liz Howard and Kathy Ormsbee. Everyone showed their gifts.

Monalees' picture was in the Star Telegram, so she talked to us about the Fort Worth Women's Club. She invited us to visit or to join their meetings.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 48, Beyersville, Texas and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge sister, PEARL R. ERNHARDT, age 87 of Taylor, Texas who died Sunday, June 6, 2004 at her home.

Mrs. Bernhardt was born in Williamson County on December 29.

1916, the daughter of Minnie (Jacobson) and Christian Nygard.

On I ecember 26, 1939, she was married to Roy Ernest Bernhardt. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Thrall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy; and sister Myrtle Tetrault.

Survivors include daughters, Nancy Scruggs and husband, Glenn, Sr. of Taylor, Linda Sladek and husband Billy of Hutto, Patricia Williams and husband, Alan of Taylor; son, Roy L. He was born September 12, 1924 in Yoakum to the late Walter G. and Elsa Marie Schoenfeld Hagens.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a farmer and rancher and owner of Hagens Grocery Store and Station. He was a member of the American Legion, the Hermann Sons Lodge, SPJST Lodge 4, and a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Survivors include wife, Anita Holly Hagens of Yoakum; daughters, Debbie Hagens, Diana Hagens, and Donna Hagens, all of Austin; sister, Ann Welhausen of Yoakum; and brother, Leonard Hagens of Yoakum.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Daryl B. Hagens.

The family received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 16 at Buffington Funeral Home in Yoakum.

Services were held Monday, May 17 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Yoakum. Reverend Gary Goodson and Reverend Leland Diekhoff officiated. Burial followed in Hermann Sons Cemetery.

SCHWARTZ, SR. of Hallettsville, Texas, who passed away on June 2, 2004. He was born on July 26, 1914 the only child of Jessie and Marcus Schwartz.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Friday, June 4 at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville with burial following at the Jewish Cemeter. Rabbi David Stern of Dallas officiated.

Armond Schwartz was born in Houston, graduating from San Jacinto High School in 1932. He went to the University of Texas, where he was an undefeated debater, winning the NCAA national competition. He graduated with highest honors from the University of Texas Law School in 1938. He was student editor of the Texas Law Review and Order of the Coif. Following graduation, he joined his father, Marcus Schwartz, in their family law firm which was founded in 1895.

During his practice of 63 years, he was recognized as one of the preeminent lawyers of America. His family law firm was honored as one of the top family law

firms of America. Throughout his career, he held many positions in the Texas Bar Association including being vice president of the Texas Junior Bar Association.

He held many posts in civic organizations as well as president of Temple Israel in Schulenburg for many years. Respected, he was a kind, ethical gentleman. He loved. family, telling stories, and his work.

He is survived by Jean Nussbaum Schwartz, his wife of 57 years; son, Marcus Schwartz of Hallettsville with whom he practiced law, wife, Amy; grandchildren, Marcus, Gillis, and Adelaide; son, Armond G. Schwartz, Jr. MD of Dallas, wife, Cindy; and grandchildren, Robyn, Armond, III, and Andrew.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Armond G. and Jean C. Schwartz Endowed Presidential Scholarship at the University of Texas School of Law, 727 E. Dean Keeton, Austin, Texas, 78705; or any charity of choice.

Resolution of Sympathy The officers and membership of Lodge 73, Seymour, wish to express sympathy to the family and friends of FRANK SIMAICHL, SR. age 85, who passed away Monday, May 3, 2004 in a Wichita Falls hospital.

Services were held at 10 a.m.

Thursday, May 6 at the First United Methodist Church in Seymour, Texas with the Reverend Steve Ulrey and Reverend Glenn Shock officiating.

Interment was in the SPJST Cemetery under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Simaichl was born September 13, 1918 in Baylor County, Texas, and was a lifelong resident. He married Adolfie Petrek on December 18, 1940 in Seymour. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa.

He worked as a rural mail carrier for many years and was a fanner. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Escalator Sunday School Class.

He was a member of the SPJST Lodge, the RVOS, and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 7871.

He is survived by wife, Adolfie of Seymour, Texas; son, Frank Simaichl, Jr., and wife, Glenda of Seymour, Texas; daughter, Peggy Blankenship, and husband, Ed of Seymour, Texas; brother, W.A. "Bill" Simaichl and wife, Frony of Seymour, Texas; grandchildren, Billy and Twyla Simaichl of Holliday, Texas, Greg Blankenship of Lewisville, Texas, and Shannon and Charlie Buchanan of College Station, Texas; four great-granddaughters, Hope Butler, Hannah and Meredith Simaichl, and Camilla Buchanan; nephew, Johnny Laushman; and niece, Cindy Nichols.

Youth Club member having busy summer Dear Vestnik Readers, Hello everyone! I hope you are having a great summer! It sure is going by fast. We just went to Fort Worth to the Southern District Slet for Sokol Gymnastics. I coach level three girls, and they all did very well. I also teach cheerleading, and they placed. I choreographed the special number for everyone from our unit. The theme was Rugrats, and we placed third. I was very proud of everyone. They really did an awesome job!

Youth Club member wins first place at Slet Dear Vestnik Readers, I just attended the Southern District Sokol Slet in Fort Worth where I placed first overall in my division. I also participated in the special number, cheerleading, and karate. I placed third in karate.

I also have been writing to my penpal in Baltimore, Maryland. I met her through a Sokol newsletter. We are the same age, we are both homeschooled, and we both love gymnastics.

I have had to redo some of my stuff for Youth Achievement Day:but I have been working very hard on it all.

We discussed having a water booth and a game booth at Snookfest on June 5 at the Snook City Park. We also discussed walking in the Relay For Life on June 11 and 12 and Family Fun Day coming up July 4 at the Snook SPJST Hall. Camp applications and Schlitterbahn applications were also turned in. Everyone brought snacks, Gatorade, and water for camp coming up July 22 to 25.

offers tribute to President Reagan Dear Readers, A final salute to an American president, beloved by millions: Ronald Reagan was the 40th president of the United States. He was twice elected as president. Among the foreign dignitaries paying their respects to Mr. Reagan was Russian Mikhail Gorbachev. Reagan and Gorbachev worked together in 1987 to tear down the Berlin Wall.

President Reagan died June 5, 2004.

He will be buried at his hilltop library in California.

Arlington Youth Club reports on recent, coming events Dear Vestnik Readers, The May 21, 2004 meeting of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington Youth Club was called to order at 7:30 p.m.

by Vice President Anna DiNapoli.

Colton Daniel led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Youth Club Motto. Members remained standing for a moment of silent prayer.

The register was read by Secretary Gena Weeks. Present were eight members, no visitors, and three adults.

The minutes of the April meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer Rachel Reed gave the treasurer's report. This month's fund raising plan continues to be cashing in aluminum cans. The youth club will also continue collecting aluminum can pull-tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Fort Worth. We will once again plan to take a tour of the facility and have a meeting in one of their conference rooms.

Youth Leader Kay Weeks reminded everyone about the District Three Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, June 27 at our Lodge 183, Arlington.

She asked everyone to take some of the SPJST Youth Achievement Day (YAD) cards for their YAD entries and to please review the Youth Club Handbook and be familiar with the policies and rules for all YAD entries.

Mrs. Weeks reminded all youth to turn in their camp forms for this year's summer camp which will be at Camp Val Verde on July 9 - 12. Orders for the camp tee-shirts will be turned in at the end of the month. In addition, we will have two of our teens, Mark Kaiser and Nick Culliton, attending LIT Camp this year on June 4 - 6.

Mrs. Weeks reported that our Lodge had great representation at the District Three Spring meeting that was held on April 25 at Lodge 84, Dallas. We had eight youth club members present and, of those, seven participated in the Christmas Card Design Contest.

Katelyn Daniel won third place in the age 6 to 8 category; Gena Weeks won second place in the 9 to 11 age group; and Kim Culliton won third place in the age 12 to 14 age category. Well done!

Also at the District Three Spring Meeting, all eight of our youth club members participated in the Washer Contest. Katie and Gena Weeks won second place! Congrats!

We held our election of officers for the coming year. The following officers will be installed and assume their new responsibilities at the June meeting: President Colton Daniel; Vice

President Kim Culliton; Secretary Gena Weeks; Treasurer Hayley Rutt; Reporter Anna DiNapoli; and Sergeant-at-Arms Katelyn Daniel.

Congratulations to everyone! We know that you will represent us well!

At the end of the meeting, everyone worked on the SPJST Scavenger Hunt and Vestnik projects. Then, after the meeting, the youth club members played games and enjoyed having dinner and refreshments served by the adult lodge.

New Braunfels youth Dear Readers, Three members from our lodge attended Leaders-in-Training Camp in Georgetown. They were Jared Jaroszewski, Travis Ploch, and myself.

We went to the Bob Bullock Museum in the morning. Later that day, we went to the Austin Rock Gym where we got to climb a rock wall. That evening, we went to Zilker Park, we got to swim and went to the botanical gardens. We also had a hamburger cookout. That night, we had a karaoke party at the LaQuinta Hotel. We all left on Sunday after the luncheon banquet and award ceremony. We had a fun time that weekend.
