SPJST delegates revise By Laws elect officers, directors, standing committees at 29th convention Delegates representing 85 lodges from across Texas convened in Temple June 13 - 16 for the SPJST's Twenty-Ninth Quadrennial Convention. A summary of significant convention actions and election results follows: Convention Highlights Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar called the Twenty-Ninth Convention to order. Helen Hegwood (88) followed by leading the convention in the National Anthem, The StarSpangled Banner and the Czech National Anthem, Kde Dotnov 1VJuI, followed by greetings from District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer. City of Temple Mayor Bill Jones, III welcomed SPJST members to Temple and issued a proclamation designating June 14, 15 and 16, 2004 as "SPJST Days" in Temple. A memorial acknowledgement was then presented by President Leshikar in memory of departed Honorary District One Director Andrew Vavra and other departed members. Monday morning's agenda included a Flag Day tribute, including the presentation of the Colors by the Temple Fire Department Honor Guard. Emil Matula, Sr. (133) led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a Flag Day tribute by Colonel Terry Walters of Fort Hood. The Flag Day program continued with the announcement of the Flag Day coloring and essay contests by State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny. SPJST State Queen Alicia Ford (13) was read the winning Flag Day essay by Tyler Susan of Lodge 48, Beyersville. SPJST State King Dale Korth (13) performed the song Letters from Home. Ruth Hanusch (47) followed, leading the delegates in patriotic song. President Leshikar capped the program by inviting all SPJST veterans to come forward and be recognized. Brother Leshikar also recognized the youngest delegates in attendance — Michelle Popp (133) and Bobby Cast (247), both age 21. The oldest delegate was Betty Jurica at 89 years. Credential Committee Chairman Darlene Engelke (66) reported that a total of 285 delegates, representing 85 lodges and 37,263 votes were seated
