Let's get together this summer and talk about ideas for bringing new life and vitality to the SPJST. And let there be only one ground rule: Be flexible. Inviting contrasting viewpoints is an essential part of our democratic process. No active member is too old or too young to have a good idea. By listening, we learn from each other.

May our dreams — and not our regrets — be our guide. We create a growth environment when we invite challenges to rise to the surface.

Plan Your Work; Work Your Plan "Understanding the need and then working to meet it." That's the theme of an inspiring book called Power Thoughts by Robert Schuller. While I won't try to condense his message in a couple of paragraphs, I will say that he provides a refreshing glimpse of what life can be like when we focus and work on turning our obstacles into opportunities.

"Look for blessings disguised a problems and you'll move forward," he says. I believe that he's right.

"Plan for success," he continues. It may sound pretty basic, but how many of us — in our personal lives and in our lodge endeavors — really take time out to map out a plan for the future? With the SPJST convention

Getting Things in Order Members of the Texas Czech Genealogical Society (TCGS) were in the SPJST Home Office last week, working to catalog the SPJST Library, Archive and Museum's (LAM) large collection of books and other printed materials. It's a massive undertaking and a project that will take some time to complete.

In visiting with TCGS, I learned that they are in the process of gathering Czech family articles that will be published in 2005. "Everyone is encouraged to submit articles concentrating on Czech family genealogy, cultural and/or traditions," says Wayne Wendt, who is the group's treasurer and who is assisting on the project.

A complete list of guidelines concerning article entries may be found by visiting the TCGS website at www.txczgs.org or by contacting Sylvia Laznovsky at (972) 878-3091 or Charlene Hurta at (979) 849-0348.

The deadline for submitting articles will be January 31, 2005.

SPJST records 1991 applications written through May in of "ands 2004 program Through the end of May, the SPJST had received 1991 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Join Hands 2004 membership drive is to write at least 2,345 applications in 2004.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through May 31, 2004.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonvvood reports on June meeting Hi! After enjoying a great "Father's Day" meal of fried chicken, brisket, sausage, and all the trimmings, our meeting was called to order by Brother Ray Perez, First Vice President, in the absence of Brother. Johnnie Krizan, President.

We all said the Pledge of Allegiance with Sister Peggy Dobecka giving our motto. Sister Georgia Soukup reported 27 members present at this meeting.

I want to take the time here to offer our condolences to the family of Gladys Yates. She was our State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, and she will be greatly missed by everyone throughout the state. She was one • great lady.

Sister Barbara Jean Hykel read the minutes from our last meeting, which were approved as read. She had correspondence of a thank you note from Sokol of West for our contribution of $100.

Youth Report Sister Peggy Dobecka Peggy, Treasurer, gave her report, and it was approved as given. She is also our youth leader and gave her report of the youth taking cakes to the rest home on June 2. Sister Peggy also reported that the social on May 21, they finalized their scrapbook and poster pictures.

The youth donated pull tabs to the Ronald McDonald House.

She reminded everyone that the District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD) will be on June 27 at 183

Call (800) 727-7578 in Arlington. It was reported that their meeting for this month would be on June 18 at our social. Their July meeting will be on the 25th of July with a pizza and swim party. She reported that their next meeting at .the hall would be on August 1.

Sister Peggy also reported on the passing of Gladys Yates, stating that she would be missed greatly at YAD and especially at camp, where she was the "TLC nurse" to all the children, along with her other duties that she always pitched in to do. The youth club make a donation in her memory to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

Brother Ray Perez called upon Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary, for his report. He reported a total of eight new members, being seven adults, and one juvenile. Thanks to our sales representatives, Brothers Jerry Kucera and Johnnie Krizan and Sister Lydia Dobecka. He mentioned that he had no correspondence from the Supreme Lodge in May regarding our membership.

Brother George reported the hall bookings for the month of July, with socials being on July 2 and 16. July 17 will be workday for our annual picnic, then July 18 will be the day of our 107th annual picnic starting at 11 a.m.

There will be activities throughout the afternoon, with a meal of fried chicken/sausage with all trimmings served at 11 a.m.

Brother George had some correspondence of thank you notes. The Rural Hill EMS sent their thanks of receiving out donation of $100 along with West Volunteer Ambulance Association sending their thanks for our donation to them of $200.

Brother Milton Peterson, Board of Trustees, gave his report on our building's addition that is in progress. He also mentioned that the District Three Spring Meeting would be held at our lodge in 2005, and that we need to complete the "spruce up" of our lodge hall.

Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Hykel, gave her report. She wished all the fathers a happy Father's Day. She reported that Flag Day Ceremonies would be on June 14 at 11 a.m. Sister Barbara also mentioned that a State Golf Tournament would be held in Temple on October 19, mentioning that there would be a $100 donation if anyone interested in sponsoring a hole.

Sister Jerelene Lenart, Sunshine Committee, gave a report of sending get-well cards to Brothers Raymond Marek and Henry Blahuta, and Sisters Lula Mae Blahuta, Georgie Skerik, and Alison Moore. A sympathy card was sent to the family of Albert Varner.

Brother Jerry Kucera, State Field Representative for District Three and Sales Representative for our lodge, gave a report of 39 members in 2004, but need more. He mentioned that he knew of eight more coming in to make us a total of 47, but encouraged everyone to get busy by offering any leads to our sales representatives.

After some discussions, it was voted in to have a meeting on July 4 with no meal. I mentioned that we could bring watermelons.

We had one birthday for June — Dorothy Kucera. We wish Dorothy a happy birthday and to all with a birthday this month.

The $5 door prize was won by Sister Lucille Sulak. Our progressive door prize winner was Jason Wayne Zapalac who was not present.

Since our youth were at Sokol and LIT Camp on this day, Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, distributed gifts of frosty mugs to the men for Father's Day. Thanks to the youth!

17, New Tabor hosts Tarok tournament July 10 Lodge

Calling all Tarok Players, Make plans now to play in the 15th Annual Tarok Tournament on Saturday, July 10 at SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor.

Everyone is welcome!

Registration starts at 8 a.m. with play scheduled to being at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $20 per person. The entry fee includes noon meal, snacks and prizes.

The tournament will include six onehour rounds of play. You must be 18 to play in the tournament.

87, Temple reports on June meeting Lodge

The meeting of Lodge 87, Temple was called to order on June 8, 2004 by President Dan Kacir. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for departed members. Special guest was Jim Walker and his science experiments.

The minutes of the April and May meetings were read and approved.

Daryl Entrop gave the treasurer's report.

Six new members were voted on and approved—Barbara Wood, Rance Hunter, Mark Witaker, Helen Myers.

Sidney Kacir made a motion to donate $25 to the Night of Lights Cancer Research Fund, seconded by Daryl Entrop and passed.

Old Business John Troy gave his report on the repairs to the lodge building the project was finished under budget, and we have a new air conditioning system and a new water heater and stove. Ed Reisner reported that the painter would start to paint in the next couple of weeks. Sidney Kacir made a motion to have the air conditioning ducts painted as well. Second was by Daryl Entrop and was passed.

5 Pilot Point-Tioga reports on June meeting Lodge

The general meeting of Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga was held at the Country Star Restaurant, Collinsville, Texas at 2 p.m., Saturday. There were six members present and the meeting adjourned at 3 p.m.

The next meeting will be moved to another date because of the Fourth of July falling on the first Sunday of the month. The date will be announced.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi member receives prestigious scholarship Congratulations to Charlie McRae, a member of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, and a graduate of Centerpoint High School, who was recently chosen to receive a full scholarship from The Cailloux Foundation of Kerrville. The foundation established The Cailloux Foundation Scholarship Program in 2000 to benefit graduating seniors from selected Hill Country high schools.

Awards are up to $11,000 per recipient annually and are for undergraduate study only. The scholarships are renewable for up to four years for a maximum multiyear award of $44,000 per student.

The applicants met or exceeded a minimum Scholastic Aptitude Test score requirement of 1017, which is just under the current national average. They also have a minimum grade average of 85 and are in the top one-third of their class.

Floyd A. and Kathleen C. Cailloux created The Cailloux Foundation in 1994. The Foundation's mission is to perpetuate the vision of the Caillouxs through the betterment of individual lives, with emphasis on the needs of disadvantaged children says Betty Vernon, program director for The Cailloux Foundation, "Mr. Cailloux was one of the original founders of Keystone International and was instrumental in the company becoming an industry leader in the manufacturing and marketing of flow control products for the oil and gas industry," Vernon says.

"During his lifetime, Mr. Cailloux became very involved in charitable endeavors in the Texas 'Hill Country and around the State.

The Foundation continues these endeavors by awarding grants to eligible nonprofit organizations mainly in the Hill Country."

Lodge 133, San Antonio member recevies construction society honor Congratulatons to Roy Schauffele of Lodge 133, San Antonio who became a Fellow of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) in April. Fellowship desig- Roy Schauffele nation is among CSI's most prestigious honors.

CSI is a national association of specifiers, architects, engineers, contractors, building materials suppliers and other involved in nonresidential building design and construction. Although the organization has nearly 17,000 members, only 329 have ever been elevated to Fellowshp in CSI's 56-year history.

Fellows are nominated by their colleagues and selected by CSI's Jury of Fellows in recognition of their acomplishements in advancing construction technology, improving construction specifications, educating people in the construction industry, or advancing the goals of the Institute.

Roy is the founder and owner of Divsion 7 Solutions, Inc. He is past chair of the CSI's Strategic Plan Implementation Task Team and only the second person of the San Antonio Chapter to become a Fellow. Roy is the husband of Margaret (Matula) Schauffele and the son-in-law of Emil and Evelyn Matula. All are members of Lodge 133, San Antonio.

202, Jourdanton enjoys picnic, swimming Lodge

Lodge 202, Jourdanton members, and guests enjoyed a picnic at the home of Erich and Joan Wiederhold.

President Jeff Barta was in charge of grilling the hamburgers and hot dogs for the 61 in attendance. Regina House and Joe Huizar were in charge of serving. The Wiederhold's homegrown tomatoes were a hit in addition to the fruit and desserts furnished by the members.

Youth Leader Joan Wiederhold led the games for the youth. Many other adults assisted in the activities.

Swimming was also enjoyed by many.

July 18 is the date of the next meeting at 2 p.m. at the Jourdanton Community Center. The first Sunday is July 4 and the second Sunday (11th) will be District Seven Youth Achievement Day in Floresville.

n Memoriam Expression of Sympathy The officers and membership of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje wish to express their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of JEROME HOLUB, age 86, of El Campo, who died Sunday, May 30, 2004. He was born August 12, 1917 in Taiton to John and Agnes Sumbera Holub. Mr. Holub was a retired farmer. He was a member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, member of the SPJST Lodge 40, past director and member of the Modern Farmers Co-op, and member of the Farmers Co-op of El Campo Survivors include his wife, Antonie "Toni" Holub of El Campo; sons, Dennis Holub of El Campo and Sheldon Holub and wife, Karen of El Campo; sister, Elsie Stavinoha of El Campo; grandchildren, Chase Holub, John Holub and Jackie Lipinski; and great-grandchildren, Shana and Deanna Lipinski.

A parish rosary was held Wednesday, June 2 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church.

Funeral services followed at 3 p.m. at the Church with the Reverend Gary Janak officiating. Interment followed at Holy Cross Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Chase Holub, John Holub, V.J. Mach, J.V. Domak, Mike Kacal and Eric Lipinski. Honorary pallbearers were Dwight Holub, Edmund Holub, David Fry, and R.A. Albrecht.

Members of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth and Fort Worth Sokol recently joined forces to participate in the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure. For more than 20 years, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has been a global leader in the fight against breast cancer through its support of innovative research and cornmunity-based outreach programs. Memory of John McDermott, Ill In

John Patrick McDermott, III, age 83, passed away May 23, 2004. Born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during WWII, worked for the Atomic Energy Commission for four years and retired from the United States Custom Service in 1988 after working there for 46 years He was active in the VFW, DAV, American Legion, NARFE, National Narcotics Association, and SPJST Lodge 172, Pasadena. His life was his work and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary McDermott, Jr.; and sister, Marilyn David of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Angeline Mayer McDermott; daughter, Gail Whitfield; son, John McDermott, IV, and wife Sherry; grandchildren, Marcus J. Whitfield and Jodi P. McDermott.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday in the Forest Park

East Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, May 27 in the chapel of Forest Park East. Interment was in the Forest Park East Cemetery.

Funeral services for Olga S. Mikeska, 85, of Guy were held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28, 2004 at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Needville with the Reverend Jim Aubey officiating.

Burial followed in the Guy Public Cemetery. Visitation was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 27 at the Garmany and Carden Funeral Directors Chapel, 3103 School St. in Needville. Mrs. Mikeska was born July 1, 1918 in Taylor to John and Matilda Heijl Stracik. She passed away May 26 at the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville.

Her family moved to Guy in 1925.

Mrs. Mikeska graduated from Damon High School. She married Joe Mikeska May 23, 1943 in San Diego, California.

She worked for Consolidated Aircraft before returning to Texas in 1945. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, always involved in her childrens' school activities.

Mrs. Mikeska was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Needville and was very active in church organizations. She loved gardening and always had many flowers blooming.

One of her great joys was her volunteer work for senior citizens and the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home. Her many quilts will be a wonderful part of her legacy.

She was the last of the "Guy Golden Girls."

Mrs. Mikeska was preceded in death by husband, Joe E. Mikeska, who died December 25, 1988; and brother, Gus V. Stracik.

Survivors include daughters, Betty Crum and husband, David of Augusta, Kansas, Nancy Chapman and husband, Scott of Wharton, and JoAnn Sette and husband, James of Hempstead; son, James Mikeska and wife, Phyllis of Guy; grandchildren, Christopher Crum and wife, Kimberlee, Chad Crum, Kelly Chapman, Megan Mikeska, Justin Mikeska, Scott Sette and fiancée, Lisa, Jason Sette and wife, Erin; and greatgranddaughter, Elle Sette.

Pallbearers were Chad Crum, Kelly Chapman, Scott Sette, Justin Mikeska, Sterling Schultz and, Dana Schultz.

In Memory of Malinda Mogonye Malinda Albert Mogonye passed away peacefully May 31, 2004 in Elgin, Texas at the age of 94.

Malinda was born on February 7, 1910 in the Noack Community east of Taylor, Texas to Emma Zicschang Albert and Ernest Albert.

Malinda was preceded in death by husband, Frank Mogonye; parents

Emma and Ernest Albert; sister, Marie Kuehn; and brother, Walter Albert.

She is survived by daughter, Jeanette and husband, Paul W. Peterson; son, David A. Mogonye and wife, Jan; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grand children; and numerous nieces nephews and nieces. She will be greatly missed.

Malinda was a graduate of Taylor High School and was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Elgin where she enjoyed singing in the choir

District Five YAD June 27 at Lodge 172, Pasadena Dear Members: Lodge 172, Pasadena will host this years District Five Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, June 27.

Registration will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m. You must be there between these times in order to register. There will be no exceptions. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The lunch will consist of hot dogs, chips, and a drink for $3.50. The program will begin at 1 p.m.

This year the photography category is vehicles and remember that you must use a regular camera and have your negative taped to the back. It must be an 8" x 10" and placed in a plastic sleet protector. Absolutely no digital cameras!

The food category will consist of candy. You need to have 12 pieces on a plain white styrofoam plate placed in a zip lock bag along with your recipe typed out on a 3" x 5" index card or a piece of paper and taped to a 3" x 5" index card. No handwritten recipes can be accepted.

Hobby kits must have the instructions included.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club members go "on the air" with KBEC-Radio Dear Readers, On Sunday, June 6, our youth club members were guest hosts of the Sunday Morning Polka Show at KBEC-Radio in Waxahachie.

The host, Johnnie Krajca, let us take turns talking on the radio to announce songs. We also helped answer the phone for people who called the radio station with a request. There were even calls from Wisconsin and California because they were listening on the Internet! I hope everyone enjoyed the show.

June 19. We are also making plans to go paint ball and a swimming party but the dates have not been set. I hope everyone is having a great summer so far!

Wednesday, June 16, 2004—VESTNIK/11 Achievement Day and reminded us that we need to get the entry cards in as soon as possible. We also voted on having the next month's meeting at the El Campo Bowling Ally. Our youth leader wanted to thank all the youth and members from the adult lodge for the great job they have been doing in collecting the Coke tabs. The meeting was adjourned at 11:35 a.m.

After the meeting, we enjoyed making our own book markers. We had a noon meal with the adult lodge, and everything tasted great.

The next meeting will be at the El Campo Bowling Ally with the time and date to be decided later.

Learn Czech With Us 46th Lesson Perfective and Imperfective Verbs.

In Lesson 13, we hit upon the problem of perfective and imperfective verbs.

Let's summarize: a) the imperfective verbs emphasize the course of the verbal action or its repetition b) the perfective verbs present the action as a completed fact, emphasizing the result, consequence or product.

In form, the perfective verbs differ from their imperfective counterparts a) by an altered stem: kupovat — koupit, davat—dat, hazet—hodit, or by a completely different stem: brat — vzit, orb) by taking a prefix: aim se — nauCim se, vain' — uvarim, opakuju — zopakuju, which is most frequent.

There are 20 prefixes in Czech and each of them carries an adverbial meaning that is added to the meaning of the original imperfective verb. Usually one of the prefixes has no other meaning, but the perfective function (psat — napsat), but it differs from verb to verb.
