District Three Gives to CEFT At their Spring Meeting on April 25, the lodges of District Three joined with the District in presenting the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) with a check for $8,000 to apply towards its campaign to establish the CEFT Residency in Czech Music and Culture at the University of North Texas in Denton. District Three lodges that contributed towards the effort include Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga, Lodge 6, Cottonwood, Lodge 25, Ennis, Lodge 35, Elk, Lodge 54, West, Lodge 66, Waco, Lodge 84, Dallas, Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Lodge 130, Dallas, Lodge 135, Ennis, Lodge 154, Fort Worth, Lodge 178, Longview, Lodge 180, Burleson, Lodge 183, Arlington and Lodge 204, Stephenville. Joining in the presentation, from left, are SPJST Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, CEFT Director Al Kercho (92), CEFT Treasurer Tony Pustejovsky (54), University of North Texas Professor Tom Sovik, District Three President Mary Steinman (154), District Three Treasurer Martha Durham (92) CEFT Director and SPJST Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir, District Three Director Johnnie Krizan (6), Justine Pokladnik (84) and CEFT Director and SPJST Editor and Director of Communication Brian Vanicek. Sister Pokladnik's husband, the late Sid Pokladnik, was a founding board member of CEFT and longtime president of the organization which was founded in 1954 to support the teaching of the Czech language and culture in Texas high schools and at the college level. Barbecue! And lots of it at the SPJST State Barbecue Cook-off held recently at SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. Misty weather did little to dampen the spirits of the 46 teams that turned out to participate in the weekend event. Watch for cook-off results and photos in next week's Vestnik.
