—Margaret Mead This week the emphasis is on the benefits of building relationships with between your lodge and its community — essentially bringing together members and non-members. At its best, hosting a community event can make a huge difference in the community's perception of what SPJST lodges are and what they're all about. There seems to be a lot of that going on lately — and it's a good thing!

Later that same day, I had the chance to drop by Lodge 88, Houston and experience the Salvation Army's Volunteer Appreciation Day. For years, Lodge 88 has donated the use of its building for the Salvation Army's annual volunteer appreciation dinner.

This year, the event took on a grander scale as the lodge's park-like setting was used for the day-long picnic and field day. And what a spectacle it was!

The lawn and play area behind the lodge hall took on the appearance of a country fair, with complete clowns, petting zoo, games, picnic area and an oldtime dulcimer band playing in the gazebo.

Acclaimed worldwide for its broad humanitarian service and outreach, the Salvation Army embraces the sick and lonely, cares for the poor, and provides compassionate emergency response in times of disaster. "The Salvation Army is a very worthy cause," acknowledges Lodge 88, Houston President Pat Bruce. "In addition to providing the Salvation Army with an annual monetary donation, the lodge was happy provide the use of our building and facilities.

"Our Men's Club, under the direction of A.J. Stayton, and the Clean-Up Committee, under the direction of Sydney Jurchak. gave freely of their time and energy to help make this event possible. Thanks, too, to Sister Marie Stayton for devoting her day to the project and for taking care of the group's needs. Many of our members also turned out to support the event," Sister Bruce says, adding that Paul (Continued on page 3.)

Two Good Examples Lodge 142, Houston just might have been the best smelling place in the city on Saturday April 17 the Fifth Annual Lodge 142 Barbecue Cook-off filled the area with the mouth-watering aroma of barbecue brisket, chicken and ribs, made by some of the bayou city's most sociable chefs.

If you've ever been to a barbecue cook-off, then you know that you don't have to cook in order to be a part of the action. It's fun to visit out on the cooking midway, inspect the pit areas and enjoy samples along the way — or even to serve as a judge — as I was happy to do!

Thanks to Sister Nancy Whitchurch, who coordinated the event, and to all of the cookers for the hospitality extended. Watch for Sister Nancy's photos and cook-off results in a coming issue.

SPJST records 1,645 applications written through April in Join Hands 2004 program Through the end of April, the SPJST had received 1,645 applications for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Join Hands 2004 membership drive is to write at least 2,345 applications in 2004.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through April 30, 2004.

Lodge 17, New Tabor team takes top honors in 2004 state straight domino tournament The 2004 Straight Domino Tournament was a success and lots of fun. It was hosted by Lodge 66, Waco, who provided a great lunch with the help of the youth. The youth club furnished the donuts and juice for the morn There were 16 teams registered to play. When play had finished, there were six teams tied for first. After the playoffs, the six teams placed as follows:

Around the State District Three delegates to meet May 20 in Waco District Three delegates and other interested members are invited to attend a pre-convention delegates meeting on Thursday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at Lodge 66, Waco. The meeting was originally scheduled for May 18; however, due to conflicts, the date has been changed to Thursday.

Light refreshments, including sandwiches, will be served in advance. The purpose of this meeting will be to review the recommendations to the By-Laws which will be discussed at the upcoming convention.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 5 Pilot Point-Tioga planning cook-out Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga met at Point Bank Community Center, Sunday, May 2, 2004 with Vice President Bill Heitzman presiding over the meeting due to the absence of President Jack Carender.

No reports were given due to absence of other officers.

Discussion was held to have the lodge meeting on a week night, in hopes of more participation from the membership.

Plans are in the making to have a hamburger/hot dog cook-out soon. the date will be forthcoming.

Hi! Our President, Brother Johnnie Krizan, called the meeting to order on Sunday, May 2 at 4:30 p.m. Whitney Dobecka, Michael Ann Moore and Tiffany Moore led all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Christi Sparkman recited our SPJST Pledge. Thanks, girls!

There was a moment of silence for our departed members. Carla Roznos Lathern, and Albert Varner. Our condolences to the families of these two members. Our Flag Bearer, Sister Georgia Soukup, gave her report of 32 members present at our meeting.

Our Secretary, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, read the minutes from our last meeting, which were approved as read.

The also had some correspondence, which I failed to pick up on. The treasurer's report was given by our Treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka. It was approved as given.

Our Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, gave his report of bookings for the month of May and June. Our socials will be May 7 and 21 for this month, with our socials for June being on June 4 and 18. Brother George also mentioned that our next meeting would be on June 6 at 2 p.m.

With our meeting date so close to the end of the prior month and the beginning of May, Brother George had not received his report from the Home Office.

Youth Report Our Youth Leader, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave a report of cakes to the rest home on April 7 then again on May 5. She also mentioned that the youth had been working on their Mother's Day crafts, which they distributed to the moms at this meeting.

Thanks to the youth for the beautiful handcrafted sewing/needlepoint bags.

Sister Peggy mentioned that they held election of officers for their club, which are President Brad Dulock; Vice President Christi Sparkman; Secretary Courtney Halbert; and Treasurer, Lakn Dieterich.

Sister Peggy also reported that the youth had entered the Christmas Card Design Contest at the District Three Spring Meeting last month and there were some second and third place winners. She thanked those who entered the contest. She also mentioned that the District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD) is coming up for June 27 and would be held at Lodge 183 in Arlington, Texas. She mentioned that this is the first time that this lodge has hosted a YAD and encouraged everyone to participate and attend.

Peggy also thanked all that came out for the "Join Hands Day" held on May 1. Thanks to all the youth and adults who worked hard on that day at the lodge. Board of Trustee's Chairman, Brother Milton Peterson, also mentioned the join hands event. He mentioned that there were six juveniles and eight adults on May 1. Brother Milton mentioned that if anyone wishes to donate to our picnic prize drawing coming up in July, he would need to know by our social on May 21 for tickets to be printed by our next meeting on June 6.

Our Sunshine Committee, Sister Jerelene Lenart, reported sending getwell cards to Sister Christine Matus and Georgie Soukup, and Brothers Jerry Kucera and Robert Dobecka. We trust they are doing much better.

Sympathy cards were sent to the family of Carla Lathern and to Eugene and Jeanne Roznos. Our condolences to all the family of Carla.

Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Hykel, gave her report of thanking all that helped on May 1 for Join Hands Day.

I failed to get all the tournaments mentioned, but watch the Vestnik under their "Family Fun and Important Dates."

District Three State Field Representative, Brother Jerry Kucera, gave us a report of 28 Applications in for the year and that Lodge 6 has attained the Gold Award. He mentioned that more referrals and applications are needed. Brother Jerry also mentioned the Continuing education classes so please watch your Vestnik for the dates and places. He also reported that there were five new sales representatives for District Three.

All Lifetime Achiever Award recipients received their plaques at the District Three meeting last month in Dallas, except Sister Lucille Sulak.

President Johnnie Krizan, along with First Vice President, Ray Perez and Second Vice President, Milton Peterson, presented Lucille with her Lifetime Achiever Award at our meeting. It was brought up in this meeting that the lodge would have a plaque for the adding of the year and names of all Lifetime Achiever Awards.

Brother Johnnie Krizan mentioned that the Convention would be the second week in June in Temple. It was also brought up that the District Three delegates meeting that was scheduled for May 18 at Lodge 66 in Waco has changed. The date had to be changed to May 20 at Lodge 66 in Waco.

Those in attendance with a birthday this month were Brother John Muehlstein, and Sisters Lou Blahuta and Ruth Krizan. A happy birthday to each of you and to all with a birthday this month. Door prizes were then drawn with the $5 door prize winner being Brother Henry Blahuta. The progressive door prize winner was Brian Sembera (not present). At this time, I would like to say thanks to Henry and Lou Blahuta from all members of Cottonwood Lodge 6, for the very nice stainless steel serving tray (the kind for keeping your food warm while serving). It is very much appreciated and will be very useful to the lodge.

Our meeting was then adjourned to enjoy a nice Mother's Day meal prepared by the men of our lodge.

24, Cyclone expresses thanks to community for supporting annual Mother's Day dinner Lodge

Lodge 24, Cyclone gathered for supper at the lodge home on May 10.

There was the feeling of satisfaction from the Mother's Day Barbecue that was an absolute success. The pit crew started at 3 a.m. The inside cooks stated at 4:30 a.m. Just the 370 pounds of potatoes will give an idea of the chore they had. This was after the chickens were washed on Saturday. During the event, there were requests for the recipes of the slaw and beans. The ladies turned down the request as they make it on the fly. Good cooks normally do not use recipes. Our lodge is deeply in debt to our cooks and the people who came to buy our ware.

Thank you all. We also had the Westphalia eighth grade sell donuts for their fund raiser. They sold more than a gross. We were pleased to offer this fraternal gesture.

President Brian Vanicek called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silent prayer was observed for the deceased members. Secretary Ginger Greger read the minutes of the last meeting.

Birthdays in May are Ginger Greger and Wilbert Mikeska — who, by the way, washed chickens on his special day! Them was a cake for him at the supper.

Bernice Sebek was sick. In spite of that, she still came through and sent her cakes to the barbecue.

Our longtime member, Jerry Bedrich, passed away. Many people will miss him.

New members are Kalen Ashcraft, Cortni Ashcraft, Emma Hoelscher, Rachel Hattermer, Ruth Cox, and Willie Stermer.

David Nauert advised of the horseshoe tournament on May 15.

Youth Report The youth club had its meeting on May 9 at the Mother's Day function.

They had a good attendance and discussed Youth Achievement Day and camp. They have many going to camp.

In other new business, Margaret Mikeska was elected assistant secretary. Daniel Wilde went to alcohol training and we bought an ad in the Westphalia School yearbook.

The next meeting will be on June 7 as the convention is going to be in full session the following week. After the meeting, Brian talked a little about the upcoming convention and that he was running for Supreme Lodge President and that Melanie was running for Editor and Director of Communications. We certainly wish the best to both of them!

Door prizes were won by Barbara Macek, Ginger Greger, Harold Vanicek, Jerry Cabla, Bobby Hoelscher, and Linda Wilde. Martha Zavodny won the Cadillac Escalade.

25, Ennis invites you to attend May Fest May 29 Lodge

Lodge 25, Ennis located at 1901 Ennis Avenue in Ennis, Texas invites you to come out enjoy their May Fest celebration on Saturday, May 29.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for the event which will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

An authentic Czech dinner including barbecue beef, klobase, parsley potatoes, sauerkraut, or cole slaw, choice of Czech pastry, coffee, or tea will be served. Plates are $7 for adults and $5 for children and serving begins at 11 a.m. Strudles and kolaches prepared by the ladies of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis will also be available.

Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its next monthly meeting on the second Sunday in July, the 1 1 th. A regular June meeting will not be held due to the SPJST Convention. There will be more on the July meeting later.

The May monthly meeting was held at the Los Amigos Restaurant with honors going to the 50-year pin recipients and mothers for Mother's Day. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Everett Kaminsky handled things very well for the restaurant set things up well.

After normal opening ceremonies, with Brother Glenn Kaminsky giving grace, a recess was taken for the meal.

There was only one glitch in the meal and that being in some cases, one's

eyes were bigger than one's stomach.

District Six Director Brother Michael Ahlstrom with wife, Kathy, came up from Victoria to make the presentations to the 50-year recipients.

There were two present which were Brother Stanley Bartos and Sister Bernice Pribyl.

Vestnik Editor Brian Vanicek stopped by to visit and eat with us before attending another meeting at Lodge 40.

Both Brother Ahlstrom and Brother Vanicek made short recitations before presentations were made.

Brother Everett Kaminsky and wife, Connie took care of carnation bouquet presentations to the mothers present.

We wish to thank Brother Ahlstrom and wife, Kathy, for traveling from Victoria. Also, thanks goes to Brother Vanicek for side tracking to visit with us and taking pictures.

In general, everything moved swiftly, things went well, and good-byes were long.

It should also be mentioned that Sister Hilda Blahuta, who is 92-years young, was able to attend our May meeting thanks to the help of Secretary Helen Kelner and Treasurer Brother Tony "A.J." Kelner, who picked her up at the assisted living center. We were happy to have her in attendance.

On a sad note, Sister Agnes Kovar passed away last week and had services on May 6. Our condolences go out to her family.

47, Seaton plans for June 1 annual picnic Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, President Edwin Pechal called the meeting to order. Flag Bearers Jerry Pechal and Matthew Hoelscher brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Visitors recognized were Frank and Risa Pajestka of Holland; Bobby and Ruth Ann Wuensche of Beyersville; Jerome Greger; and Bill and David spoke to us later. Please come again.

There was only one on the sick list and that was Brother Walter Pomykal who had surgery and is at home now.

Hope you are doing well. If others are ill, let someone know so it is reported.

Sister Adeline Kohutek read the roll call of officers, trustees, and sales representatives. She also read the minutes of the previous meeting and these were approved.

Then Frank Pajestka spoke of his candidacy of District Two Director and so did Bobby Wuensche. So best of luck to both of you.

Misha Hutchison and Justin Engelke Exchange Wedding Vows Misha Gayle Hutchison and Justin Allen Engelke were married at 5 p.m. on April 17, 2004 at Miss Nellie's in Cameron Park with Brother Clark Montgomery officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Ms. Barbara Roy of Bellmead and Mt Gale Puryear of Bellmead. Misha is a graduate of LaVega High School and is employed at WRS, as a Production Assistant.

The groom is the son of John and Diana Engelke of Chalk Bluff. He is the grandson of Louie and Dorothy Veselka of Chalk Bluff and Darlene and the late Bennie C. Engelke of Waco, all members of SPJST Lodge 66. Justin is a graduate of Connally High School and is employed at WRS as a Research and Development Technician. Justin is a member of Lodge 66 and was State King in 1996.

Maid of Honor was Leanne McMains. Bridesmaids were Lauren January, Lisa Pierson, Jennifer Jenkins and flower girl was Laney Pierson.

Best Man was Andy Stewart.

Groomsmen were Justin Harris, Shane Janeke, Steve Hutchison, and ring bearer was Mitchel Grant.

We will need items for bingo prizes, sweets for the sweet booth and cakes for the plates being sold from 11 a.m. to ? Also items are needed for the auction. Billy Goonan will be the auctioneer. So be making plans to contribute to the picnic. This one time a year you can afford to help in many ways. And by all means, make plans to be there.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Lodge 189, BryanCollege Station reports on to meet on June 6 May meeting The May meeting of Lodge 92, Fort Worth was attended by 31 members.

The meeting was called to order by President Gordon Hubenak. The youth club led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes were approved as written and the treasurer's report was approved for audit. The Audit Committee reported the books for March and April were in order.

Lodge 92 June meeting would normally be held on June 13, however, the State Convention starts on that day so it was recommended that our June meeting be held on Sunday, June 6. The motion was made and seconded, the motion passed. Dinner will be served during the meeting, so come early to get your plate before the meeting starts. Our president will call the meeting to order at 12:30 p.m. We have a country and western dance scheduled for that day. It starts at ,3 p.m. Randy and the Road House Band plays on that day. They are always great crowd pleasers. Please plan to come early and stay late. Join the dancing on the "best oak wood dance floor in Tarrant County".

Due to the death of a very close friend, the sister of Lodge 92 member Jan Taborsky, I was unable to attend this meeting. I wish to thank my mother, Evelyn Scaff, for taking notes for me and filling me in on all of the news. I will see you all at the June meeting.

196, Houston-West memorial service set for May 23 Lodge

Lodge 196, Jednota West will conduct a special memorial service for all of the members of our lodge who passed away this year. n Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the Resolution committee of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family of our departed sister, MARY ANN ROSCHET ZKY, age 92, of Corpus Christi, Texas, who passed away in Saturday, May 8, 2004.

She was born on February 2, 1912 in Prague, Czechoslovakia to Leo P. and Rosie Majek. She came to the United States with her family when she was three years old. She was brought over by her father who came earlier playing in a Czech band, and working odd jobs saving his money to bring her and her family over just before World War I. She was an active member of the ch, she made quilts and

was also a great cook. Mary Ann was loved by all, and she loved her family.

She was preceded in death by husband, Reinhold F. Roschetzky, Sr.; son, Billy Giles; daughter, Mary Lorene Schanen and husband, Vernon; and grandson, Rodney Lee Roschetzky.

She is survived by sons, Vernon Roschetzky and Jimmy (Patsy) Roschetzky; brothers, John and Charlie Majek, all of Corpus Christi, Texas,and Leo Majek of Orange Grove, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 29 greatgreat-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Sunday, May 9 from 4 p.m. at Cage Mills Funeral Directors Everhart Chapel with a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, May 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Prince Apostles Catholic Church with interment to follow at Seaside Memorial Park.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club to participate in Relay for Life Dear Vestnik Readers: Our youth club will be participating in the Relay for Life on Friday, June 11, 2004. Relay for Life is an overnight team event that increases awareness of cancer in the community and raises much needed funds to fight the disease. Each youth club member is collecting donations for this event.

Anyone wishing to contribute can make either a donation or you can purchase a luminaria.

Luminarias can be in honor or memory of loved ones, friends or family.

The luminarias are only $5 each. Our youth club will have a bake sale on Saturday, May 29, 2004 from 9 a.m. 11 a.m in the parking lot of Citizen's State Bank in Snook. All proceeds will go towards our team total. We will have lots of goodies and look forward to your support.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club reports on May meeting Dear Readers, Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club had its monthly meeting on May 2, 2004

Czech Project Journeys Into Czech-Moravian Texas Fayetteville is considered the "cradle of Czech Settlement" in Texas.

In 1885, Jan Halamicek founded the settlement of Roznov in Fayette County. He named it after his birthplace, Roznov pod Radhostem, which is located in northeastern Moravia, right in the middle of where many immigrants to Texas had come from.

The Czech settler's arriving in Texas established early colonies in Fayetteville and Lavaca counties.

Searching for good farming land at affordable prices, the Czech's spanned out across the state and established pockets of settlements.

Many Czechs arrived in Texas with names that were difficult to pronounce much less remember.

Although they wanted to preserve their identity, they also wanted to participate in American society.

The desire to embrace the ways of the new world was very strong.

Much cultural tradition was brought to Texas by the Czechs.

Texas was rich in fairy tales and legends. The most common story was about a supernatural evil that lurked in the rivers and creeks waiting for a chance to grab boys and girls and take them with him to the deep waters.

The most famous of cultural representation is that of music, dance and the Kroj, the traditional folk costume. Czech music is a bridge between generations, bringing young people into a culture that they might not have ever experienced. The beseda is a traditional folk dance made up of a circle of four couples that perform complex combinations of four separate dances that represent different regions. The ladies of the circle wear krojs. Traditionally, the kroj was decorated to identify a specific village of origin. Today, homemade costumes are decorated to represent their Texas roots. You can see many of these Czech costumes worn by Czech dancers and singers at polka Pests and other Czech celebrations.

I am very proud of my Czech heritage, and can brag that I am also a native Texan.

We discussed summer socials and trips, Youth Achievement Day, summer camp, and new members. Our youth club is growing Big! Keep up the great work Lodge 47!

We also planted two trees at the hall for Arbor Day. Afterward, we went to putt-putt in Killeen for our May social! I hope to see all District Two members at summer camp to share the fun together! Also we will be having our annual picnic at Seaton Star Hall on June 6. We will have loads of fun so come by and join the fun. Hope to see you there!

Dear Readers, How far will your youth leader go to get kids to participate in activities?

Lodge 84 Youth Leader Jennifer Andreason will go so far as to put a spoon in her mouth and balance an egg on it to get Jason Simms to participate in this race around a tree at the Junior Youth's Easter egg hunt on April 3.

This youth leader's responsibilities go far beyond point sheets. Quarterly reports, camp chaperoning and choreographing group talents. She takes the time to make phone calls to each youth member to give them dates and times

of our next youth club meeting or activity.

Dear Readers, We met on Sunday, April 25, 2004 for our annual hot dog roast for the adult members. We had fun at the home and ranch of the Jaroszewski's.

Junior members cooked the hot dogs and members brought chips and dips and dessert. We had our meeting and discussed voting for new officers.

The stories in this book are about Czech people and their involvement in the Civil War. These stories aren't just about the soldiers, but about others who played different roles during the war.

As immigrants, they came to America to escape the war and oppression of Czechoslovakia.

Not wishing to participate in the war, they often hid from the conscriptors who hunted there down and forced them to fight in the war.

Some even went to the federal lines and joined in the union army to avoid being captured. However, this often caused problems between their families so many enlisted and did their time.

As the men went off to the war, their wives and families were left to provide for themselves. The women were used to hard work, often they had helped their husbands with the farming in the old country. They cultivated the land and harvested corn and cotton, two important commodities especially during the Civil War. The Union had blockaded all the Confederate ports during the Civil War. Many men were able to get out of going to war by hauling cotton to Mexico. This was a long and dangerous trip, but if the hauler returned home alive, then it was profitable. Cotton was in great demand during the Civil War, and haulers were paid quite lucratively for risking their lives crossing the Rio Grande.

This book reflects many stories told and retold by settlers who fascinated listeners of all ages. One I enjoyed most was about a pioneer wife who, with one toss of a hatchet, cut the rope the conscriptors had used to tie her husband up as they lead him off to service. Shaking the hatchet at the officers' heads, they fled the house of this gutsy woman.

Many of the stories told by the 65 contributions to this book tell of Czechs being forced into service or hauling cotton to Mexico, or of the women who struggled to make ends meet while their husbands were off at war. It also reflects on what our ancestors went through to come to the new world and make a better life for us all.
