Knowledgeable and active sales representatives are key players in the SPJST's quest to grow and prosper. In order to comply with various state guidelines regulating the sale of life insurance, SPJST sales representatives are required to a prescribed amount of continuing educa tion credits per year. To address this requirement, the SPJST Insurance Department offers an ongoing series of continuing education courses held at various locations throughout the state. In recent weeks, SPJST sales reprehave sentatives been attending classes to review changes in two of SPJST's most popular life insurance products — Universal Life and Term Life Insurance.

lodge requires a clear mission and determined individuals. A lodge can only be as strong as the ideals that it aspires to achieve. That's the "valueadded" difference that a strong fraternal program can deliver. In the SPJST, the fraternal component enhances membership by promoting a wholesome family environment for the entire family and encouraging the cherished traditions of the Czech culture and heritage. What's more, active lodges enhance membership by emphasizing the social and civic responsibilities that members share with each other and the communities in which they live. There are few limiting factors placed on local lodges and how they choose to meet their fraternal obligations. Really, what it comes down to is imagination and initiative.

Drew Popelka announces candidacy for Legal Advisor After much thought, prayer and testing of the waters, I am honored to officially announce my candidacy for Legal Advisor of the SPJST. For those of you with whom I have not yet had the opportunity to become acquainted, I am a resident of Temple and a member of Lodge 47, Seaton.

Since 1992, I have been married to my college sweetheart, Jennifer, with whom I have been blessed with three children — Dakota, Haley and Alyssa.

We are active in Temple Bible Church where we enthusiastically participate in Sunday School, small groups and Bible studies. When the opportunity is available, I am also involved in shortterm missions programs proclaiming and teaching my Christian faith.

My son, Dakota, is an active member in the Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club.

Dear Members and Friends, In celebration of Easter, SPJST will host an Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday, April 10 at Lions Park in Temple from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Lions Park is located off Midway Drive and Hickory Road in Temple.

A Texas-sized Easter egg hunt is scheduled to begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. Tens of thousands of eggs filled with treats and surprises will be hidden for children between the ages of 0 and 10. The hunt will be divided into age groups.

Several hundred eggs will be filled with tokens redeemable for special prizes.

All children are welcome; all they need is a basket to collect their eggs.

Special guest will be the Easter Bunny. Other activities include balloon twisting and face painting. Refreshments will also be served.

Stuffed Easter bunnies and Easter baskets filled with candy and toys will be among several door prizes awarded at the Easter Eggstravaganza.

SPJST records 648 applications written through February in Join Hands 2004 program Through the end of February, the SPJST had received 648 applications for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Join Hands 2004 membership drive is to write at least 2,345 applications in 2004.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through February 29, 2004.

In 1993, soon after being hired by then Secretary-Treasurer Leonard Mikeska, I became a member of the SPJST. I worked in the Home Office until 1994 when Mr. Mikeska became Vice President after the unfortunate passing of Bernie Gebala. Having previously been employed by the SPJST Home Office, I already possess a general understanding of the inner operations of the Home Office. In addition, I have an established and ongoing relationship with the current officers.

As owner of a law firm in Temple, I am a tax attorney by profession. Being licensed by the State of Texas as both an attorney and a certified public accountant, I routinely advise individuals, businesses and nonprofit entities and actively consult clients regarding their anticipated business decisions.

My practice focuses on business law, real estate, estate planning and tax law.

Moreover, I actively participate in the local community and continuously demonstrate my leadership abilities.

My law firm sponsors and I assist in coaching Temple Little League baseball. I devotedly participate with my son in the local Cub Scouts organization. I am also a presentation speaker for The Gideons.

Among my leadership roles are serving on various local nonprofit boards. I am the immediate past Treasurer of Temple Parks Foundation and past Secretary and board member of the Bell County Young Lawyers Association. Additionally, I am the current Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army of Temple.

817 FM 381 Rowena, Texas 76875 —SPJSTunprecedented pace. The marketplace is in constant flux with ever-increasing competition and ever-changing consumer desires. The SPJST has to be proactive in facing these changes while maintaining a firm grasp of our cultural roots and heritage.

In addition, more laws and regulations are added each year such that businesses and organizations must be careful to not unknowingly perpetrate illegal activity or inadvertently enter an unforeseen detrimental situation.

We must carefully investigate and plan for the consequences of our decisions but not be so restrained that we cannot operate effectively. The SPJST should set the benchmark for other organizations to follow.

Our youth program is one of the shining examples of what differentiates our Society from other insurance companies and other fraternal organizations. Without funding, our Society cannot attract and maintain the involvement of youth. Without our youth, we have no future leaders.

Without future leaders, the SPJST has no future. If elected, I will fervently promote that the SPJST make the youth program a perpetual priority and pursue incremental increases in youth program funding.

Having reached middle age, I have earned enough experience to faithfully and thoroughly perform my duties. I am old enough to have insight into the current cultural and business trends and yet still young enough to bring fresh ideas to the table. As Legal Advisor, I will thoroughly research the applicable statutes and regulations pertaining to decisions made by the Board and accordingly advise of the potential risks involved.

The SPJST has a long and storied history. I would appreciate your support and vote for Legal Advisor to give me the opportunity to help lead the SPJST to a long and storied future.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville and Fayette County CHS annual picnic April 25 at Rek Hill Fayetteville SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville and Fayette County Czech Heritage Society will have their annual combined picnic at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill (on south side of Highway 159 about three and 1/2 miles east of Fayetteville) on Sunday, April 25, 2004 starting at 12 noon.

Members are asked to bring a covered dish (vegetable or meat) and dessert. Everything else will be provided. This is always a nice outing for everyone so bring your lawn chairs and fishing gear. We look forward to the new SPJST members joining the fun event this year.

It was voted to change the April and May meeting dates due to Easter and Mother's Day. After checking with the hall manager, our lodge will meet Sunday, April 4 and Sunday, May 2.

The members voted to give $25 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund in memory of Mary H. and Frank J. Matula, Jr. Mrs. Matula was a sales representative and active in our lodge serving on various committees.

Mary Ann and Raymond Sustaita were thanked for being in charge of the kitchen. Also thanked were the lodge members who helped in anyway to host the successful district meeting.

Members receiving the Lifetime Achiever Award at the district meeting were Victoria C. Orsak, Bennie E. Orsak, Lillie Balusek, and Shirley Kalmus. Tramer Woytek accepted the award for his mother, Kathryn Woytek, who was unable to attend.

Several youth club members placed in the Christmas Card Design Contest: ages 6 to 8 —Sarah Siptak, first; Jonathan Vanek, second; ages 9 to 11—Holly Scott, first; Mark Siptak, second; ages 12 to 14—Elizabeth Vahalik, third; and ages 15 to senior— Joshua Siptak, third.

The lodge will donate a $25 WalMart Gift Card to the District Six SPJST Barbecue Cookoff prize drawing.

Johnny Krajca Celebrates 40 Years of Broadcasting in May Johnny I. Krajca, a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, has a love of Czech polkas and waltzes that goes back almost half a century. For the last 40 years, he has been spinning records for the enjoyment of Ellis County listeners.

Johnny and his wife, Margaret have been living in Crisp in their comfortable home since shortly after their marriage in 1951. They have four lovely daughters, Rita Krajca Holland being most active in helping promote the two-hour Sunday Morning Polka Hour on KBEC Radio out of Waxahachie.

Forty years of dedication began over a cup of coffee in the year 1964 at the Western Café in Ennis, when Johnny and Raymond Zapletal were deep in discussion over a 45 record of "The Donna Polka" by Ernie Kucera of Nebraska. Johnny mentioned that he had been talking to Larry Gunter, an ad salesman for KBEC, and he had suggested that Richard Tuck, KBEC owner, might be interested in a polka program.

KBEC started broadcasting in 1955 and hosted a 15-minute polka program by Johnny Mensik and later, Eric Honza. Meeting with Richard Tuck, Johnny was informed that he could host a program on Sunday if Johnny could furnish the records and also the sponsorship. Mr. Tuck did say, however, that he was willing to put the first hour on without sponsors.

To his surprise, Johnny spun his records for the first time in May 1964 and even had six local sponsors.

Today, the popular Sunday Morning Polka Show has a huge following, and Johnny starts each hour off with his and Raymond Zapletal's favorite, "The Donna Polka."

At the first Ennis Polka Festival in 1967, Johnny broadcast live from each of the Ennis Fraternal Halls.

The event was engineered by Richard Tuck of KBEC. Johnny interviewed members of each of the 20 bands that performed and many of the Ennis visitors. To this day, his Sunday morning broadcast is visited by members of bands that perform at the annual festival and some play live at the station.

In 1987, Johnny and his wife, Margaret, offered to host a Polka King and Queen contest on the Friday night before the Polka Festival. Seventeen years later, the Polka King and Queen contest is a much-anticipated and well-attended event. Johnny and Margaret deserve much credit for a happening that is as much a part of the yearly festival as the festival itself.

For the last nine years, Ennis' favorite polka and waltz spinner has broadcast on Christmas morning playing carols familiar to all of us.

The music of Johnny Krajca and Sunday Morning Polka Hour Christmas and the stories of Christmas' past are a gift from Johnny and Margaret to all listeners, as they open their gifts in their homes. These two hours are sponsor free and everyone listening waits for the taped replaying of the 1950 St. John Czech Choir narrated by Joe Odlozil.

For all the fans of the Sunday Morning Polka Hour, Johnny says that he has no plans to retire any time soon. In fact, he and his wife are going to host a big celebration this May to commemorate his 40th year in broadcasting. The Sunday show will be a direct broadcast from their home on Crisp Road.

It will be a "come and go" and listeners are invited to stop by, say a few words on the air, and enjoy refreshments. Both Johnny and Margaret are looking forward to seeing and visiting with many of the Polka Show listeners. This will be an opportunity for old and young alike to express their thanks to a man that, for almost a half century, has spun records of polkas and waltzes for the enjoyment of listeners not only in Ellis Courty, but also Dallas, Fort Worth and surrounding cities.

We will all continue to call in to the Sunday Morning Polka Hour with Johnny Krajca with dedications to our loved ones. We all wish Johnny many, many more years of spinning our favorites.

Lodge 13, Dime Box reports on March meeting Our regular monthly meeting was held on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. Vice President LaDonna Jatzlau called the meeting to order.

Youth Club member Miguel Vega led the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Dorothy Rackel called roll and read the minutes from the last monthly meeting. They were approved as read.

Secretary Dorothy Rackel also gave the treasurer's report in the absence of Treasurer Debbie Kostelka.

Sister Carla West presented our lodge with $620 and an honorable mention plaque was accepted for us at the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet in Cyclone. State King Dale Korth and State Queen Alicia Ford accepted all awards and honors for our lodge. Also presented was a certificate of commendation to Fraternalist of the Year Nominee Sister Lee Flippin.

Sister Carla West also brought attention to a new rule for the royalty competition that will be in effect for next year.

We discussed in old business that we set up for th e domino tournament will be on Wednesday, March 24 at 7 p.m. That was all the old business that needed to be discussed. We did not have any new business.

Guest speaker Donnie Victorick then presented Ricky Korth with a camouflage cap, knife, and check for $50 for winning the deer hunting conbuck.

14-point test with a Congratulations, Ricky! Brother Victorick also reminded all members of the District One Spring Meeting in Snook on April 18, 2004 and of the State Convention in June.

There were a number of youth club members present at this month's meeting and their attendance was and is always welcomed.

Since there was no other business that needed to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned.

Secretary Carla Pavelka read the minutes from the February meeting.

April 25 is the District Three Spring Meeting at Lodge 84, Dallas. Elk had five officers go to the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet held at Lodge 24, Cyclone. They all enjoyed it.

Lodge 47, Seaton reports on February, March meetings Dear Brothers and Sisters, The February meeting was held on Sunday, February 1, 2004 at 2 p.m. with President Edwin Pechal presiding. Taylor Brinkley and Matthew Hoelscher brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing in memory of James Edward (Jimmy) Pechal deceased member. May he rest in peace.

Visitors welcomed were Bernice Vanicek, Freddie Schroeder, Helen Schroeder and Jerome Greger. Also 38 members were present.

Please come to the meeting. Tracy Ross and Neely Jones are new sales representatives who were approved by the Home Office and Vice President Gene McBride.

Correspondence were the names of 50-, and 75-year members; about the incentive banquet; a thank you note from the Robert Meyer family; a letter and lodge refund check from Jerry Mikulas; a thank you letter from the American Cancer Society for $40 sent them as a memorial and a letter about the ads from the lodges in the convention brochure. We voted to pay for a full-page ad for $100.

Dolores Skrabanek congratulated Edwin and Judy Pechal, the new proprietors of Ratibor Country Grill and wished them well in this new venture.

Gladys Marek gave her report as treasurer and so did the chairpersons.

Woodrow Marek gave the audit for the last quarter of 2003.

Brother Frank Klinkovsky told us of the District Two Spring Meeting in Taylor.

Youth Leader Heidi Bartek gave her report. She had 31 youth present and they made valentines for the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, No. 1 in Taylor.

The picnic will be held on Sunday, June 6. More details later.

Happy birthday to Edwin Pechal, Freddie Schroeder, Wallace Jez, Otis Meier, James Skrabanek. and Helen Janacek. Door prizes were won by Louis Kohutek, Nancy Meier, and Gladys Marek.

March Meeting

The March meeting was held Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m. Edwin Pechal was in charge. The youth brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 42 members and two visitors in attendance.

We remained standing in silent memory for Martha Albina Sefcik and Eleanora Spanhel, 92. May these sisters rest in peace. Sister Spanhel was a regular at the meetings while her husband, Frank, was still alive and coming to the meetings and other functions.

These shall be missed by many, especially the family. Deepest sympathy to these families.

Joyce Skrabanek stated that get well cards were sent to Ora Belle Helms, Lorene Kotrla, Dorothy Pechal, and Albert Pechal. Hope everyone of those named are dong real well by now. (I am back at work.)

Roll call of officers and minutes were read and approved.

Correspondence included a thank you card form the family of Jimmy Pechal for flowers sent to the funeral; a letter from Laverne Vanicek, our lodge fraternalist nominee, thanking us for picking her and the excitement when the non-winners were called and her name was not in that list — congratulations on being in the top five; the District Two Spring Meeting at Lodge 29, Taylor on Sunday, March 21 details in the Vestnik; Christmas Card Design Contest; and membership drive.

The president stated that a board meeting is to be held and tables and chairs will be moved to accommodate the crowd on March 14 for the battle dance and another function on March 17.

Birthdays in March are Joyce Kraatz, Justin Kraatz, Adeline Kohutek, Drew Popelka, Elsie Jez, William Dean, David Coufal, and Joe Kohut. Door prize winners were Woodrow Marek, Cal Helms, and Helen Schroeder.

Easter Festivities, Meeting April 4 The next meeting is Sunday, April 4 which will be honoring the 50-year pin recipients and 75-year members. Also be sure to bring the youngsters as they will have an Easter egg hunt after the meeting. A covered dish meal will be after the Easter egg hunt. The lodge will furnish the meat and vegetables, salads, and desserts will be brought by members.

I surely hope you are making plans to be at Seaton Star Hall, Sunday, April 4 at 2 p.m. Enjoy the fellowship with friends and be glad you came. See you then.

Lodge 73, Seymour is hosting the District Four Spring Meeting. It will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2004 at the Senior Citizen's Meeting Room.

79, Corpus Christi awards dinner April 18 Lodge

On March 14, 2004, District Seven held its spring meeting in Corpus Christi, Texas hosted by Lodge 79.

Starting at 9:30 a.m. until the meeting started, coffee, juice and Krispy Kreme Doughnuts were available to a nice crowd of members.

District Seven held its usual silent auction and proceeds were divided between the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) and the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC). I want to thank District Seven for the $232 that was donated to ENC as its half.

During the meeting, a lot of items were discussed and elections were held. I will not go into this as I know our very efficient secretary will tell us all the news.

We want to thank Sisters Lanita Anglin and Melanie Zavodny and their

spouses for coming to visit with us.

Also Brother Bob Bayer and Polly were all smiles at the meeting. We would like to thank all who brought pastries and items- for silent auction.

Also mostly overlooked at most outings our hard working kitchen help— thanks!

Many pairs of eyeglasses, soda tabs, and bottle caps were also turned in.

Keep collecting. There is always a need.

In closing, I want to say thanks to Brothers Bob Bayer, District Seven Director, and District Seven State Field Representative Hector Garcia for the great, great job they are doing in District Seven with an astronomical amount of insurance sold in 2003. You all are doing a tremendous job. Keep the whip on the sales reps (just kidding).

All in all, we had a great meeting, good food, and good fellowship.

80, Holland reports on March meeting Lodge

President Frank Pajestka, Jr. called to order the meeting of SPJST Lodge 80 at 3:35 p.m. on March 6, 2004. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. All officers were present.

Secretary Linda Hill read the minutes of the February meeting. They were approved as read in a motion made, seconded and passed.

Treasurer Glenn Latham gave his report on the committees.

President Pajestka reported on the upcoming District Two Spring Meeting at Lodge 29 in Taylor on March 21. The meeting starts at 2 p.m. with a meal to be served at 5 p.m.

Brother Frankie reported five Lodge 80 members will be given Lifetime Achiever Awards.

The lodge had one application.

Brother Frankie reported on the incentive banquet on February 28 in Cyclone. Lodge 80 walked away with a nice collection of plaques and money.

District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky gave a brief report on membership and congratulated Lodge 80 on the awards won at Lodge 24, Cyclone.

District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom gave a brief talk on his running for president.

Willie Kohutek and his wife, Adeline, were present. Brother Willie presented 50-year pins to Joe Fronek and Frank Pajestka, Jr. The other recipient was Dorothy Hill who was absent.

Congratulations, Dorothy, Joe, and Frankie. Willie and Adeline, it was good to see you.

On the sick list was Curtis Wolf, our kitchen cook, who is recuperating from surgery. Also, Irene Pausewang, who entered Will 0' Bell on Saturday.

Discussed was an Easter egg hunt on our April 3 meeting. This is for the young and young-at-heart.

Those having birthdays in March were Rita Janke, Georgia Grossman, Ronnie Vrabel, Glen Latham, and Adeline Kohutek.

Door prizes brought by Frank Klinkovsky were won by Mary Ann DePew, Glen Latham, Estelle Coker, Calvin Eckermann, Virginia Benner, Billie Latham, R.C. Williams, Melissa Vrabel, and Jewel Wolf. Other door prizes were won by Virginia Benner, Jewel Wolf, G.L. Brisbin, Rita Janke, and John Jackson.

84, Dallas 94th anniversary celebration April 18 Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 84, Dallas will be celebrating our 94th anniversary on Sunday, April 18, 2004 at which time we will honor our 50-year members. A dinner is planned and will be served starting at 12:30 p.m. Following will be the presentation of the 50-year pins then the Czech Concert Orchestra will play for a free dance from 2 p.m. Our menu for that day is barbecue, cole slaw, potato salad, ranch-style beans, bread, drink, and dessert. The price of the dinner is $3 children, $5 for adults. We ask that ladies of the lodge please bring pastries to be served with the dinner—thank you.

On Sunday, April 25, we will be hosting the District Three Spring Meeting. Details for that day will be in the Vestnik. A continental breakfast will be available as you arrive, and the dinner menu is pork loin, gravy, potatoes, green beans, bread, dessert, and drink.

The price for this meal is two cans of any kind of food per person, otherwise, the meal price is $5. Please check the expiration date on the

canned goods. Thank you.

The members were happy to see Sister Wanda Petr at the meeting. She reported there was a sympathy card sent to the family of Mildred Chervenka who passed away. To her family, we extend our sincere sympathy. May your loved one rest in peace.

Brother John Becan reported that he, Brother George Reznik, and Brother Adolph Salac worked on repairs needed for the lodge. We thank them.

Sister Carlyn Ondrusek reported the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council will meet April 12 at the Czech Club with KJT 111 and KJZT 108 as hosts. You are invited.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr was at a planning meeting for the District Three Spring Meeting so we had no report.

Our next lodge meeting will be held on April 18. That is on a Sunday, after lunch and in conjunction with our anniversary celebration.

91, Crosby reports on March meeting Lodge

Lodge 91, Crosby met Saturday, March 13, 2004 at the Crosby Community Center. Approximately 30 members were present. President Stasney opened the meeting with the Pledge.

The minutes and treasurer's report were given and approved.

The president discussed the possibility of reinvesting lodge monies with SPJST in June. He then honored 50-, and 75-, year members and discussed the possibility of a SPJST float in the Crosby Fair and Rodeo parade and Highlands Jamboree Parade. Members were also informed about the tile purchased at the Czech Culture Center in Houston honoring Lodge 91.

Members were informed that there was no applicant for the yearly $500 scholarship.

Mr. Larry W. Pflughaupt spoke briefly about the SPJST convention in June and about the direction in which SPJST is headed.

Jason Hermis and Margaret Decker Announce Engagement Dennis and Elizabeth Hermis of Lodge 142, Houston would like to announce the engagement of their son, Jason Hermis, to Margaret Decker.

The wedding date is set for November 13, 2004 at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.

The bride-to-be is an escrow secretary for Startex Title Co. The prospective groom is employed by Hewitt Associates as a Data Design Analyst and currently pursuing a MBA at the University of Phoenix. Jason is the former Mr. SPJST 1996-2000.

Jason is also the grandson of Frank and Dorothy Tumis and Henry and Rita Hermis all of Lodge 142, Houston.

The April lodge meeting has been moved to the first Sunday of April.

Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge 179, Warrenton met on Thursday, March 11, 2004 at 7 p.m. at the Carmine Lions Club Building.

President Orville Kunkel opened the meeting. He introduced our guest, Mr. Bob Bayer, District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman.

Vice President Lloyd Goehring led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Bea Vasek read the minutes of the previous meeting. They were accepted as read. Treasurer Ora Lee Levier' gave her report and it was accepted as read. Financial Secretary Gladys Baack also gave a report of the local lodge dues collected. FAC Joan Goehring read about upcoming events.

Sales Rep. Ricky Weyand gave a report on the I 1 th Annual SPJST Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards Banquet held in Cyclone, Texas, hosted by Lodge 24.

Next Meeting April 8 at Orsak's Cafe The next regular meeting will be held on Thursday, April 8 at Orsak's Cafe in Carmine. Members will pay for their meal and the lodge will pay for the drinks and tip. Everyone come out and enjoy this social event.

Mr. Bob Bayer, candidate for SPJST Supreme Lodge President, visited the lodge and talked briefly about the upcoming Convention and encouraged all delegates to attend.

We enjoyed potato soup and sausage prepared and donated by Bo and Bea Vasek, along with side dishes and desserts brought by other members. The meeting adjourned with refreshments and bingo.

Sewing Circle reports on March meeting Ennis

The Ennis Sewing Circle met on March 11, 2004 with 20 members present, and eight guests. They were Georgia Brozek, Elizabeth and Ernest Machovsky, Ester and Robert Cunningham, Olga Pechak, Jerry Kohn and Julius Podhrasky. We were so

happy to have all of you visit us.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was held-for Otto Macalik, uncle of Geraldine Zhanel.

The minutes were read by Vlasta Laznovsky and Lillie Kosarek gave the treasurer's report. Both were approved as read.

Sunshine Lady Eleanora Pelzel announced the March birthdays—Adell Vlk and Georgia Tupy. Both were unable to attend. A get well card was signed for Adell Vlk—we hope she is feeling better; and a birthday card for Georgia Tupy, wishing her many more.

Dorothy Prachyl read a thank you from Georgia Tupy for her Christmas card and gift.

Rosie Bednar hasn't been able to attend any meetings this year due to a fall in January. Hope things get better as we miss you quilting, Rosie.

We quilted for Bertha Podhrasky — a top made by her mother, Vojteska Janicek. It was really pretty. And guess what! Bertha can quilt and very nicely, too.

I must tell you what time our faithful quilters start gathering. President Sadie gets to the hall around 7:30 to 8 a.m. and starts getting things ready. When the quilt top arrives, the ladies start quilting. That is why I call them our faithful quilters. They're always there.

Everyone else arrives whenever they can and lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. with the quilters first in line. After lunch, we have our meeting with the quilters still quilting. They are special people.

Next month, we will quilt for Rosie Bednar. We hope she is feeling better and can come. In May, we will quilt

We are happy to say two of our guests, Elizabeth Machovsky and Ester Cunningham, joined our club. We are so happy to have you with us.

Hello was sent to all from Alice Roberts, who had car trouble and couldn't make it, and Georgia Tupy. We missed you both. I know about car trouble. I was stranded at the Sokol Hall last Monday night, but that's another story.

Lillie Kosarek passed out little squares for everyone to sew together for our Christmas quilt which we will quilt in September. Time gets by in such a hurry. My mother always told me the older you get, the faster time goes. She was so right.

Pat Fowler came a little late, had a doctor's appointment, but I think everything is okay.

Thank you was given to Bertha Podhrasky for donating dinner and dessert plates, pie spatula, and dish cloths. Libbie Vrla brought plates. We have lots of very nice members who keep us stocked with all our needs.

The door prize was brought by Lillie Kosarek and won by Bertha Podhrasky and little gifts were exchanged. I won four hot pads which were really nice. I have already used them.

Our lunch was delicious as always. I had some really good dressing someone from Dallas brought that. Vlasta Laznovsky brought a very good potato casserole; Georgia Brozek brought her delicious brownies. We had scrumptious pies—apple, pineapple, pecan, and jello dessert. Plus, the meat and vegetables. It was all so good.

A special thank you to the quilters and clean up crew. You all do a great job.

Before President Sadie adjourned, she reminded everyone about the time change on April 4. Remember, spring forward. Our next meeting will be April 8.

Other News

Congratulations to Martha Ritchey and husband, Hubert, on their 50th wedding anniversary. Saturday, March 13 was their actual day. They have one of these big new campers. It is called a fifth wheel. They went camping to Sulphur Springs for that weekend.

They were surprised by the camping club with a big anniversary cake and donuts for everyone there, and their son and daughter in-law, Mike and Judy, came. They also brought a cake.

Martha was glad she did not have a doctor's appointment when she came home. He sugar count would have been sky-high. Congratulations also to one of our guests, Robert Cunningham. He entered the Fort Worth Cowtown Marathon and in his age group, he won first place. That's great!

I know storms and tornadoes aren't funny, but two of our members had quite a story to tell about the storm (some said tornado) that passed through Ennis several weeks ago. Sadie Kubin was in her garage when it got dark, the wind stated blowing, and it started to rain. She decided she better get to the house. The wind was blowing so hard

Wednesday, March 31, 2004—VESTNIK/11 she couldn't get her back glass storm door opened. all the other doors were locked, she had to use the back door.

Every time she pulled it, the wind would lose it. When she finally managed to get inside, the storm had blown over. I would love to have seen her pulling that door. I am so glad you made it in okay. Libbie Wisniewski had a funny story, too. She is afraid of thunder and lightening so when it started, she ran to bed, crawled in and covered her head. When she felt it was safe to come out, the sun was shining. Thank goodness it blew over really fast, and all were safe and sound.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden No. 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, BARBARA "BOBBY" MIDDLEBROOK of West, Texas who died Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the age of 62.

Rosary was recited at 10 a.m., Tuesday, February 21 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption followed by mass of Christian burial with Reverend Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial took place at St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Sister Barbara was born in Elm Mott to Edd and Albina Skopik. She attended schools in West and Abbott.

She married Bobby Ray Middlebrook on June 6, 1959 in West. Barbara was a homemaker, and worked in the home health care field and as a cook for St. Mary's School.

Barbara was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, KJZT 11 St. Ludmila Society, Catholic Daughters of America 829, St. Anne's Altar Society, and an SPJST Lodge 66 member since October 2000.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Bobby Middlebrook; sons, Edward Middlebrook and wife, Sharon of West and Robert Middlebrook and wife, Debby of Waco; daughter, Lisa Marie Middlebrook and friend, Hank Dawson of West; sisters in-law, Shirley Skopik of Waco and Rose Swank and husband, Jerry of Elm Mott; brothers in-law, Irving Middlebrook and wife, Margie of Waco and James Middlebrook of West; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Sister Barbara was preceded in death by daughter, Caroline Ann; grandchildren, Johnny Ray Fulton and Cynthia Marie Fulton; and brother Edward Skopik.

Viola Mary Holcek was born October 4, 1913 in Bell County to Alois and Ottilie Schiller. She died on February 8, 2004 at the age of 90.

She is survived by daughters, Ora Mae Simek and husband, Leroy of Waco and Carol Edwards and husband, Robert of Waco; stepdaughters, Ruby Austin of Brandon, Florida and Gloria Meadow and husband, Filton of

Wednesday, March 31, 2004—VESTNIK/13 Hewitt; brother, Jerome Schiller and wife, LaVerne of Houston and sister, Juleine Hensel of Waco; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Viola lived in the Rosebud area all her life. For many years, she worked at the El Tampico Cafe in Rosebud and at the Johnny Plasek Cafe in Rosebud.

In August of 1962, she married Joe Holcek. She and Joe farmed the Holcek Farm located three miles south of Rosebud on Highway 77. Joe had four daughters and one son, all grown and away from home at this time.

Viola enjoyed farm life. She especially liked the farm animals. He had names for all the cows and took care of a large flock of chickens. They always had a couple of dogs around, one of Viola's favorites was Rasco. He was a large, aggressive dog. You didn't get out of the car until Viola told Rasco that it would be all right.

Viola worked hard alongside Joe on the farm. They were inseparable -always together. Life on the farm was mostly hard work, but once in a while, we would all gather and have a family barbecue in the backyard with all the children, grandchildren, aunts, and uncles. At these gatherings, Joe would always get Uncle Silvester Bartek's Crank Organ and play it. Viola really enjoyed these times and other holiday celebrations spent with family.

Over the years, Viola suffered many broken bones and had numerous operations. In spite of all this, she was never one to complain. She always had a sweet smile and a pleasant disposition.

In 1975, Joe and Viola retired from farm life and built a home in Rosebud.

They continued to look after each other until ill health plagued them both.

Daughter, Carol Edwards, came and took care of them until Joe died on February 21, 1993, and until Viola passed away 11 years later on February 8, 2004.

of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, on behalf of the officers and membership wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed brother, CHARLES F. GERLA, age 73 of El Campo who died Friday, March 19, 2004.

He was born March 17, 1931 in Hillje, to the late Adolph and Frances Podesva Gerla. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, member of the American Legion Post 251, retired maintenance foreman for Texas Gulf Sulphur, and member of St. Philip Catholic Church.

Survivors include wife, Mary Ann Herbert Gerla; daughters, Joy Pressler of Fulsher and Jackie Wulf of Houston; son, Michael Gerla of Sugar Valley; sisters, Annie Hubenak of Wharton and Emma Preuss of El Campo.

He was preceded in death by brother, Richard Gerla; and sisters, Mary Wendel and Agnes Socha.

Visitation was at noon Sunday, March 21 at Triska Funeral Home chapel. A rosary was recited at 4:30 p.m. following visitation. Services were at 10 a.m., Monday, March 22 at St. Philip Catholic Church, the Reverend Michael Lyons officiating.

Graveside services with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post 251 were at Holy Cross Memorial Park. Triska Funeral Home, El Campo, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to St. Philip School; or donor's choice.

Youth Letters Section State Youth Director reviews posts deadlines, event notices Dear Members and Friends, The year 2004 is off to another great start in the SPJST Youth Program!

Four new youth clubs have already started this year. They are Lodge 162, Iowa Colony in District Five (Youth Leader Brenda Moyle); Lodge 233, Lubbock in District Four (Youth Leader Elizabeth Faglie); Lodge 239, Hondo in District Seven (Youth Leader Irma Puente); and Lodge 247, San Marcos in District Seven (Youth Leader Patricia Lopez). A big welcome to these youth clubs.

Christmas Card Design Contest

Christmas Card Design Contests will be held at each district spring meeting. All SPJST youth are encouraged to enter. Prizes will be awarded.

The top state winner"s design in each of four age groups will be on the 2004 SPJST Christmas cards. The cards will be the official SPJST Christmas Cards and will also be available for sale. Checks the Vestnik calendar for your spring meeting date and location.

I encourage our youth to take some time at each meeting to recommend their friends on the "magic cards."

Then, mail these cards in to the Home Office. Youth members, the top prize for the girl and boy who recruit the most new members (new applications) are the titles of Mr. SPJST Youth and Miss SPJST Youth.

SPJST Easter Eggstravaganza April 10 in Temple

The SPJST is hosting an Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday, April 10 at Lions Park in Temple, located off Midway Drive and Hickory Road, beginning at 10 a.m. Activities include a Texas-sized Easter egg hunt with lots of prize eggs, the Easter Bunny; face painting; refreshments; and door prizes. Youth Club makes rabbit baskets for West rest home Dear Readers, We had our Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club meeting March 7, 2004. It was windy, but we were able to fly our kites until they blew away. We worked on rabbit baskets for the West rest home for Easter and took cakes there for March birthdays; took a lot of items to Caritas for the needy. Well, spring break is here. We discussed past events like our socials and the achievement banquet where I was fortunate enough to win $50. We also discussed upcoming events such as the Easter Egg hunt that will take place at our next meeting and the Easter bunnies that we have been making for the nursing home. We will continue working on the Easter bunnies until we complete them.

After the youth club meeting, we flew kites. We had perfect weather to fly them. I hope to see everyone at the Easter egg hunt!

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club Easter egg hunt scheduled for next meeting Dear Readers, We took cakes to the nursing home on Wednesday, March 4, 2004. We have been very busy making bunnies for the nursing home for Easter.

We flew kites after our monthly youth club meeting then stayed for the adult meeting. We will have an Easter egg hunt at our next monthly meeting.

I have been very busy with school and with Sokol. I do cheerleading, gym nastics, tumbling, and Karate at Sokol.

We will be having an in house meet on Saturday, March 27 ad I will perform all of these.

March Meeting Our March meeting was on Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m. Alicia Ford called the meeting to order. Dawn Rackel led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Todd Sump led the youth club motto. There was a moment of silence in memory of Dennis Klecak.

Under old business: This month's charity is to bring a $2 charity donation. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive ends March 31. Youth club members receive 20 points for donating $2 or more and a certificate for donating $5 or more. All youth club accounts need to be paid this month.

Mrs. Skrabanek then took the floor.

She announced that the District One Spring Meeting will be on April 18.

Registration will be at 1:30 p.m. Any members who want to do a skit at the meeting are welcome to do so. Also, the Christmas card contest will be held on the same day. Don't make the SPJST the main focus for the card.

Leaders-In-Training Retreat will be from June 4 to 6. Youth Achievement Day (YAD) is on July 18. Lodge 39, Bryan will host it at the Caldwell hall.

District One Camp will be on July 22 to 25. The theme for this year is Treasure Island. All camp forms need to be notarized. She then discussed the changes in the rule books. New Business Members are reminded that we need seven new members to meet the Join Hands Membership Drive. April 11 is Easter so we will move the April meeting to April 4 at 12 p.m. with a social and an Easter egg hunt. Please bring your $2 collected for the social. April 10 is the SPJST Easter Eggstravaganza in Temple. Everyone is invited to attend. There will, be an egg hunt with prize eggs, the Easter bunny, face painting, refreshments, and door prizes.

Disney on Ice is performing in Bryan on April 8, 9, and 10. Is anyone interested in going? We will discuss this more in depth at the April meeting.

May 1 is Join Hands Day. We will walk in the March of Dimes Walk in College Station and join in the festivities. After the walk, we will have lunch then see a movie. We start our pizza fund raiser today. Each member needs to sell at least four items. Mrs. Sharon handed out the order forms. Everyone needs to start bringing in his or her soda pop tops at the next meeting. We need to start collecting ideas for YAD group talents.

We then played a St. Patrick's Day game, and had refreshments. Door prizes were given, then we adjourned the meeting.

Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club to take field trip to Austin Dear Vestnik, During this spring break, Lodge 18 youth will be taking a trip down to Austin to go visit a museum. Also, we will be having a bake sale and will be doing some community service. We don't have a date set for these events yet. Another thing we will be doing is taking milk jugs to businesses for soda tab collections for the Ronald McDonald House.

Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club reports on March meeting Dear Readers, The Junior Youth Club of Lodge 84 held its March meeting last Wednesday on the 17th. Did you remember to wear some green since it was St. Patrick's Day? It was nice to see all 11 members there. We even had a guest in attendance.

We discussed upcoming events: the Easter Party to be held on Saturday April 3 and the bake sale to be held on Friday April 9 and Saturday April 10 at Rudolph's market. Also, we are planning on participating in a "sprucing up" event in May. After the meeting, we did a craft to commemorate St. Patrick's Day, it was an over the rainbow candy holder.

Lodge 48, Lodge 84, Dallas Beyersville Youth Club member Junior Youth Club posts historical note wear green on St. Patrick's Day Battle of Brushy Creek

The last major battle between settlers and the Comanche Indians was on February 18, 1839 in Williamson County. Lots of settlers were killed.

Among the killed were Mrs. Robert Coleman, her son, Albert and Dr. J.W. Robertson. One of Mrs. Coleman's sons, Tommy, and seven of Dr. Robertson's slaves were also taken captive.

This information comes form a historical marker located four miles south of Taylor on Highway 95.

Lodge 84, Dallas Juniors and Teens visit nursing home Dear Readers, On Sunday, February 8, 2004 the SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas Junior and Teen Clubs made their annual visit to St. Joseph's Nursing Home. The youth performed the traditional Red Handkerchief dance and handed out valentine cards, while the teens put on a short patriotic ceremony then passed out sweet-smelling red carnation flowers. Before the visit, the teens met at the lodge and made imitation candles out of soap, a bath towel, and decorations. This aromatic, festive gift was also given to the residents at the nursing home. Overall, this tradition was a huge success, enjoyed by both the young and the old alike.

Dear Readers, We held our March meeting on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. Everyone wore some green, so there wasn't any pinching going on thank goodness.

We had a lot of members in attendance.

It was really nice to see everyone.

After we said the pledge and discussed old business, we talked about new business. We're going to have our Easter party on Saturday April 3, and don't forget about the bake sale at Rudolph's Market the following Friday and Saturday. I'm looking forward to buying some dessert to take to my Nana's for Easter.

We then made a candy holder for a craft, it was to the "Over the Rainbow" theme. That's all I have to report on.

What Are Czech Projects?

Czech Projects encourage youth members to research and study Czech heritage and culture. Czech Projects consist of essays on Czech subjects.

Youth members can earn a maximum of 50 points for each Czech Project submitted.

Czech Project Rules • Write an essay on a Czech subject.

Project essay length for junior members ages 6 to 12 must be at least 300 words. Project essay length for teen members (ages 13 to high school senior) must be at least 500 words. Project may also be in the form of a Vestnik Project with questions and answers from the essay.

• Projects must be typed.

• Projects must be in youth member's own words.

• Projects must include a cover sheet with the following information: title of Czech Project, youth member's name, address, phone number and lodge number.

• Projects must include a bibliography listing all sources of information used to compose the project.

• Projects must be received by May 31 to receive merit points for the current year's merit point contest.

Ceske Budejovice, a castle to of the Czech Republic The Czech Republic has many castles, most of which were built to safeguard the trade routes that ran through the deep forest to connect South Bohemia to the Baltic lands.

When revolts broke out, much of the land was left scarred by the armies that passed through them.

One castle I remember my grandparents talking the most about when they visited the Czech Republic was Ceske Budejovice.

In 1263, King Premysl Otakar II decided that the nobles in the area needed a new royal town so he added on to the two settlements that were already standing in the area.

Hence was born the town of Ceske Budejovice. The town was built in a marshland between two rivers: the Vltava and the Malse, and the creation of a third, the Mlynska.

The townsfolk specializing in exporting cloth and could boast of secretly hiding the Bohemian crown jewels and royal archives from the Thirty Year's war.

Both good and bad luck befell Ceske Budejovice. In 1641, a field surgeon left some inflammable medicine on a stove, which after seven hours, burned 226 houses, the church, and part of the town wall. But in 1751, the town prospered by the transporting of goods by water and by the creation of a horse-drawn road leading to a neighboring town. And once the St. Nicholas Church was rebuilt, it housed the remains of St. Auratian.

In the Premysl Otakar Square, the most prominent building is the town hall because of the symbolic statues of Prudence, Courage, Wisdom, and Justice on the top.

Also in the Square is a beautiful Samson fountain created by Josef Dietrich, who also created the statues.

There is a myth that surrounds a particular spot in Premysl Otakar Square near the Samson fountain.

In 1478, 10 men were executed where a five-sided stone with a cross in the middle is laid. The spot is called the "Wandering Stone" and it is said that should anyone cross over it at 9 p.m. in the evening, he will lose his way in town.

The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum in Temple, Texas is a "must-see" for visitors to the city and state. Through varied displays and collections, the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum preserves the culture, the memories and the proud history of Texans of Czech ancestry.

It stands as a tribute to the pioneer spirit, resourcefulness and valor of our Texas forefathers and mothers.

For years, the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum has been a labor of love for many people. It's still that way. Through artifacts, photos and text, the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum provides an intimate look into the family life of Texans of Czech descent in the last century.

The library includes more than 23,000 books and manuscripts, including an extensive collection of genealogical texts. The Svatava P. Jakobson Reading Room, dedicated in 2003, provides researchers with a pleasant place to work. Library, Archives and Museum plans to renovate this historic 6,900 square-foot building at the corner of North Third and French Streets in Temple to serve as the hub of operations for its growing program. The building was purchased by the LAM in 2001 thanks largely to a gift from Louis and Oleta Hanus of Houston, Texas.
