Standing Committee Meetings The SPJST's quadrennial convention is less than six months away — June 13 - 16. It is during the convention that the Society's by-laws and proposed changes in the structure of our fraternal organization are considered.

Already lodges have elected the delegates who will be representing their lodges.

To facilitate the convention process, direction communication remains an essential element. Already, our Supreme Lodge has been working to identify some of the issues that will be facing the Society in the years to come. In due time, they will be making recommendations for addressing these challenges.

This past Saturday, the Publication Committee met to review the past performance of the office of the Editor and Director of Communications and to consider and make recommendations with regard to the Vestnik and the communication section. Thanks to the SPJST officers and directors who participated in the meeting. This kind of face to face discussion encourages a meeting of the minds and will help to ensure that progressive actions are championed at the 2004 Convention.

This Saturday, January 17, the Finance Committee meets. Again, Supreme Lodge members will be meeting with the group to review the Society's overall financial posture and consider various recommendations to the convention. Please note the letter from Finance Committee Secretary Rita Vanek which appears again in this week's Vestnik. Your input is invited.

We also received notice this past week from By-Law Committee Secretary Dorothy Pflughaupt that the By-Law Committee will be meeting at the SPJST Home Office on Saturday, January 31 in preparation of the June convention.

The guidelines which describe how the business of the SPJST is to be conducted is found in our By-Laws. The services that members expect to receive from their Society are also set out in general terms in the By-Laws.

In essence, the By-Laws provide guidelines that the Society can follow to reach goals and obtain objectives.

As previously stated in this column, it is important for SPJST members to

Committee representatives are to convene at the Home Office in Temple on Saturday at 10 a.m.

By-Laws can be added, deleted and/or amended by convention delegates permissible under law.

One of the fundamental principles that continues to distinguish the SPJST from other business forms is that the members still control the organization.

Member control is exercised through elections of officers and directors at the lodge, district and state levels.

It is very important to note that all recommendations for additions and/or changes to our SPJST By-Laws must be submitted to the secretary of the ByLaw Committee not later than 60 days prior to the convention. A quick check of the calendar puts that date at around April 12. At this point, you've still got plenty of time to review and discuss the By-Laws in your lodge meetings.

Delegates, especially, are encouraged to take advantage of this season of convention preparation and make themselves familiar with our By-Laws and give careful consideration to areas that may need attention. Copies of the By-Laws may be obtained from delegates to the 2000 convention or your local lodge president. A limited number of copies are also available to members through the SPJST Home Office.

District Two invites members to experience Blackhawks hockey January 24 District Two has a section reserved for the January 24, 2004 Central Texas Blackhawk hockey game held at the Bell County Expo Center. The Blackhawks will be playing the Wichita Falls Rustlers. Section 105, located directly behind the penalty box, has been reserved for SPJST on this night. We will be recognized during the game.

This social is for everyone in District Two, young and old alike. If you have never been to a hockey game, please make plans to attend and enjoy an action-packed night with other members.

The game begins at 7:05 p.m. The cost for active members ages 13 to adult is $5.

Finance Committee to meet January 17 at Home Office Article 25(a) of the SPJST By-Laws states that the Finance Committee shall meet annually, to review all compensation and financial benefits of the Supreme Lodge and editor, review the overall financial posture and report their findings to the Supreme Lodge.

SPJST records 3,028 applications written through December in Outreach 2003 program Through the end of December, the SPJST had received 3,028 applications for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Outreach 2003 membership drive was to write at least 2,205 applications in 2003.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Outreach 2003 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through December 31, 2003.

Lodge 30, Taiton introduces Taylor Lynn Watz Dear Vestnik Readers, I would like to introduce you to our newest member at Lodge 30, Taiton. Her name is Taylor Lynn Watz. She was born on September 4, 2003.

For Taylor's first birthday, I purchased her very first. SPJST insurance certificate. I did the same for her big brother, Blair Thomas.

Both children are my Godchildren.

I took a SPJST Teddy Bear, positioned the certificate in its arms, wrapped them both in a SPJST baby blanket, and gift-wrapped it all. Taylor treasured the teddy bear, however, she pushed the blanket away because she thought it meant, "nap time."

Taylor is the daughter of Michael and Jacqueline Watz of El Campo. Her grandparents are Jack and Angeline (Sablatura) Garner of New Taiton and Floyd and Margaret Watz of E 1 Campo.

Taylor's grandmother, Angie (Sablatura) Garner, was a former SPJST District Six Queen in 1966.

Maybe one day, Taylor will follow in her grandmother's footsteps.

There were 11 in attendance, six members, two visitors, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (SFAC) Gladys Yates from the SPJST Home Office in Temple, District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer, and District Seven State Field Representative (SFR) Hector Garcia.

After the meal, a business meeting was held and due to having no President of our Lodge 26 Hector Garcia conducted the meeting. All present recited the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held for our departed members and two of the members who passed away recently. They were Louise Hanus and Melvin Thompson.

The minutes were read by Secretary Patricia Thompson and accepted as read. Ruby Jancha gave the financial report. It, too, was accepted.

Correspondence was read by Hector Garcia. SFAC Gladys Yates spoke to the members on increasing the number of our membership and to try to have monthly meetings instead of quarterly meetings. Lodge 26 has no place to meet monthly. We are trying to find a place to have our meetings.

Bob Bayer of Floresville reported on our Christmas party which will be held Tuesday, December 16 at 6 p.m. in the Chisholm Trail Cafe in Skidmore.

In that Lodge 26 didn't have a president, Mary A. Denkeler agreed to take the office.

The meeting adjourned.

SFAC Gladys Yates brought door prizes. Winners were Mary Hanus, Mary A. Denkeler, Rudy Jancha, Patricia Thompson, Annie and George Hanus.

Lodge 26, Skidmore held its quarterly meeting and Christmas Party on Tuesday, December 16 at 6 p.m. in the Chisholm Trail Cafe located in Skidmore. The members and guests enjoyed a delicious meal. There were 11 members, and four visitors present, including State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (SFAC) Gladys Yates from the SPJST Home Office in Temple, District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer from Floresville, and District Seven State Field Representative Hector Garcia.

After the meal, a business meeting was held. President Mary A. Denkeler called the meeting to order.

All present recited the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held in memory of deceased members. The minutes were read by Secretary Patricia Thompson and approved. Treasurer Ruby Jancha gave the financial report and it, too, was accepted. There was no correspondence. There were no committee reports.

Lodge 47, Seaton welcomes Meredith Mikeska One of the most recent additions to the Lodge 47, Seaton member roster is Meredith Deann Mikeska, born October 7, 2003 to Steven and Melissa Mikeska of Rogers.

Grandparents are Don and Georgia Marshall of Holland and Dean and Ho Mikeska of Rogers.

Meredith is the great-granddaughter of Della Green of Zabcikville and the late Emily (Paula) Mikeska Stuteville, who served as Lodge. 47, Seaton's Czech reporter for many years.

Addition to letter from Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard Dear Readers, Please note that a portion of Brother Joe Nezval's December 2003 meeting report was inadvertently omitted from the letter which appeared in the December 31 issue of the Vestnik. I apologize for the omission. The paragraphs that were omitted are as follows: Before the luncheon, there was a visit by Santa, aka A.J. "Tony" Kelner.

As always, Santa spread good cheer.

Santa also visited with some of the folks at a nursing home in Rosenberg before coming to our meeting.

Brother Michael Ahlstrom, District Six Director, came to visit the members present. Thanks for the visit and as always, "the latch string is out."

As to the luncheon, the ham was furnished by the lodge and baked by Sister Connie Kaminsky. It was very good. Thanks, Connie! Also, thanks, goes to those who brought the side dishes. Thank you for taking the time to prepare them and bringing them.

Lodge 89, Rosebud invites members to get involved Dear Lodge 89, Rosebud Members, It's been a while since I've written a letter, so here's what we've been doing the last few months.

In September 2003, we went to Sea World. In October, we went to the movies and had a Halloween party in the Rosebud park with the youth club.

Then in November, after the meeting, we went to hear a band called 437 South. My nephew, Gary Coots, plays drums. They really sound good!

December was busy! On the 6th, we had our meeting and party. We also helped the youth with their float, which they entered in the Rosebud parade. I think the adults had as much fun as the youth riding the float.

The evening of the 6th, we ordered barbeque from the Circle S in Cameron.

And to top it off, we sang karaoke.

December 11 was the day of the Rosebud parade. District Two Queen Dawn Capps, her Duchess Erin Mathis, King Andy Baker of Lodge 89, and his Duke Matthew Hoelscher, all rode the float with us.

As you can see we've been busy.

Also we would like to send our sympathy to the Coots and Smetanka families on the death of Ray and Billie's mom, Lillian Ondrasek. She had been a longtime SPJST member.

The Lodge 89, Rosebud is starting it's 94th year. Come and have fun with us. We meet the third weekend of each month. The Sunshine Committee reported that a sympathy card had been sent to J.C. and Irene Johnson whose sister had passed away recently.

Kathy introduced Vice President Gene McBride who gave an interesting and motivational presentation about the Lodge Incentive Program.

Gene recognized Lodge 177 as a unique lodge in the state of Texas for its outstanding community work. He complimented Lodge 177 as being the model for true fraternalism, saying

Lodge to Donate AED to Volunteer Fire Department Kathy announced some great news about mobile AEDs (automatic electronic defibrillator), which cost approximately $3,000 per unit. Thanks to the efforts of our President, Kathy Fritz, and District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky, who worked to obtain $1,500 from the SPJST Home Office to match the $1500 donation from Academy SPJST Lodge 177, the members of Academy Lodge 177 will be able to donate an AED during the first quarter of the year 2004 for the Little River/Academy Volunteer Fire Department. It will be used as needed for emergency patient care for all of the Little River area and surrounding communities.

Jackie reminded all members to bring their volunteer activity time sheets to the next meeting. She presented numerous wonderful door prizes throughout the evening. In fact, every person present won a door prize!

Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride installed the officers and board for the next year. Thank you, Gene, for an inspiring installation ceremony.

Members and guests then enjoyed a wonderful meal provided by the lodge.

Our lodge meeting was on December 14, 2003. President Red Oman called the meeting to order. The secretary read the minutes, and they were approved as read.

Officers were elected. Then we had our Christmas party. We had a white elephant exchange of gifts and sang Christmas carols. We ended with a dinner of roast beef and ham with dessert of pecan pie with ice cream.

Installation of officers will be held at our January 11 meeting.

Our New Year's Eve dance was great as usual. Thanks to the officers for the decorations and hosting the dance of the year Dancing music was provided by Free Country. Great!

Many of us stayed for our meal of ham, black-eyed peas, cole slaw, and corn bread. Good luck to each of you for the new year.

We look forward to a wonderful year for our lodge. We need all of your help in making this coming year a success. There will be a sign-up sheet for hosts/hostesses for the coming year and for yard mowing for 2004.

Houston-West members celebrate holiday season Hi, these are the condensed minutes from the regular monthly December 2003 meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Lynn Johnsen at 2 p.m., December 7, 2003.

A report was made on Operation Valentine, and it was decided to collect goods from the community at large. Youth Leader Robert Castillo announced a skating party for the first Saturday in January. Alma Schulz reported two rentals for January.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Miranda Hale, Kyla Hale, and Lynn Johnsen, who celebrated birthdays in December.

Members are encouraged to go to a food-handlers class. Improvements are needed for the kitchen facilities.

Extra wiring was needed for the stage in order to accommodate the speakers and lights for the bands.

Johnnie Haak was named Fraternalist of the Year. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.

Condensed Minutes of the Annual Meeting The meeting was called to order by Lynn Johnsen at 3:30 p.m. immediately following the monthly meeting.

A vote passed that those members who are active at Lodge 196 at least five years prior to their 50th anniversary will be allowed to have the hall free of charge for their celebration.

Clean up will be the responsibility of that couple.

Jourdanton reports on January meeting Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, January 4, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the Jourdanton Community Center with 38 members and guests present.

Sales Representatives present were Brenda Gonzales, Jesse Huizar, Joe Huizar, Chester Gail Lee, and Joan Wiederhold. President Jeff Barta presided. Youth club members led the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers were present.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes and correspondence received from the Merlin Scholz family and Jourdine Tymrak. Treasurer Melba Novosad presented the financial report.

New members are Rodney Espinosa, Regina House, Brenda Gonzales, Raven Vasquez, Alyssa Buentello, Daryn Garza, Kalyn Burchett, Sandy Vasquez, Devin Vasquez, Pamela Soliz, Ashley Buentello, and Clarissa Rodriquez.

Youth Leader Joan Wiederhold announced the youth club is collecting old cell phones in the month of February to be presented to the Family Crisis Center. Empty shoe boxes are needed to be filled with supplies for hospital patients. SPJST cookbooks can be ordered from the youth club for $11.

In Memoriam In Memory of Pauline Shiller Pauline Ima Georgia Shiller, 93, of Rowena, passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2003.

Pauline was born on February 21, 1910 in Moravia, Texas to Dr. John Jaroslav Shiller and Annie Louise Shiller.

They moved to Victoria for a few years then to Rowena where Pauline Schiller Dr. Shiller continued his medical practice. Pauline's mother was ill for many years and died when Pauline was 20 years old.

Pauline attended the University of Texas in Austin and graduated from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene with a degree in journalism.

She assisted her father with his medical practice for 35 years. Pauline and her father traveled through every state in the United States and traveled extensively to foreign countries.

Pauline has lived in Rowena since 1917 with her family. She loved social activities, dancing, playing cards, reading, cooking nutritionally, canning, gardening, crocheting, knitting, hunting, and visiting with friends. Because of Pauline and Dr. Shiller's fondness for venison, they spent many happy hours in deer camps with their friends.

Pauline was an active member of SPJST and Czech Historical Society, serving as reporter until last year and then as honorary reporter. At one time, she was a special events reporter for the San Angelo Standard-Times.

She has always been active in keeping the Czech heritage alive. She was very proud of her heritage. It was very special to her. She even risked traveling to Czechoslovakia to visit relatives during the Communist rule.

She was a member of the Ballinger Business and Professional Women and Rowena Extension Homemakers. She was also a longtime member of Lodge 49, Rowena, serving as secretary for many years.

Pauline was an agriculture landowner and actively concerned about conservation practices.

Because of her love of life, she was very interested in nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. She was a lifetime student of nutrition, spending much time preparing delicious meals. Her doctor gave credit for her longevity to her healthy lifestyle.

Pauline is survived by cousins, John Hnatek and wife, Faye of Victoria, Joe Hnatek and wife, Lynn, of Lubbock, Margaret Hnatek and Catherine Wokaty of Victoria, Ann Elsik of Houston, Henri Ethel Blake of Denton, Maryland, Joyce Mikeska, Bill Mikeska and wife, Candice, Brent Mikeska and wife, Scarlotte, and Brenda Chapman and husband, Tommy, all of San Angelo; and other relatives and friends.

A special thank you goes to Phoebie

Crosby who was her devoted friend and caregiver.

Funeral service was at 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 30 in Rains-Seale Funeral Home Chapel in Ballinger.

Burial followed in Rowena Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joe Hnatek, Bill Mikeska, Gene Gully, Allen Gully, Dennis Halfmann, and Lee Ray Wilde.

Honorary pallbearers were John Hnatek and Wilbert Gully.

In Memory of Otto Matus Otto J. Matus, age 90 of West, formerly of Bellmead, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2003 in a West nursing home.

Rosary was recited 1:45 p.m.

Thursday, December 18 in St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in West, Texas followed by Mass of Christian Burial was at 2 p.m. with Reverend Henry Petter as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, West.

The family received friends at Kotch Funeral Home from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 17.

Mr. Matus was born November 29, 1913 at West and had lived in Bellmead from 1949 to May of 2003 at which time he moved back to West.

He married Louise Sykora October 20, 1936 in Penelope. Mr. Matus was a farmer and was a employee of General Tire Rubber Co. from 1949 from 1975. Mr. and Mrs. Matus were the owners and operators of Bellmead Washeteria for a number of years. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bellmead and was very active in all of the activities of the church. He was also active in Caritas and served as a volunteer at the Bellmead Nursing Home.

Mr. Matus was a member of the KJT Society 31 of West, SPJST Lodge 66, Waco in El Mott, and Knights of Columbus Council 1202 of Bellmead.

Survivors include his wife, Louise of West; daughters, Dorothy Rejcek and husband, Willie of Abbott, Mary Kaenzig and husband, Jerry of Killeen, Margie Nannini of Modesto, California and Hattie Macha and husband, Dennis of Burleson; sister, Hattie Kolar of West; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were Laddy Rejcek, Larry Rejcek, Bryan White, Robert Hanaway, Chris Slovak, Mark Christensen, Paul Christensen, John Kelly, Dennis Macha, Jr., Curtis Wales, and Barry Guice.

The family has designated memorials be given to the West Rest Haven Activity Fund.

Kotch Funeral Home of West, Texas was in charge of arrangements.

Letters Section State Youth Director reports on current projects, coming events Dear Members and Friends, Happy New Year 2004! I wish you, your lodge and your youth club another dynamic year. I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday season.

Outreach 2003 Membership Drive Ends Three in a row! Yes, it's been three years in a row that we have achieved the statewide goals in our membership drives: Mission 2100 — Vision 2002 — Outreach 2003. A big thanks to everyone in the lodges and youth clubs who are making this happen. And, a special thanks to our sales representatives—for they are the ones who are the true leaders of this program.

Join Hands 2004 Drive Begins The new membership drive is Join Hands 2004. The goal is 2,345 written applications across the state. The Youth Program goal is 500 written applications, ages 0 to 17.

Tee Shirt Contest Deadline is January 31 I have only received about 15 tee shirt design entries so far. I challenge all youth members to enter this contest. The winning design will be featured on more than 1,000 tee-shirts and worn all across the state. What an honor!

The theme is "Discover a Treasure—SPJST Youth." All participants receive merit points and a certificate. Winners in four age categories will each receive a $75 WalMart gift card. DYCs to Meet January 31 in Temple The District Youth Counselors and their assistants will meet on Saturday, January 31 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. January Vestnik Projects Due Date — February 10 January Vestnik projects are due to me

by February 10. Please note that part of this month's project is to make valentines for the SPJST Rest Home residents. A maximum of 50 points may be earned for this project. This is 20 points for the fillin-the-blank answer section and 30 points for the homemade valentines.

Each good, creative valentine that a youth submits will receive 10 points.

SPJST Awards Banquet Saturday, February 28 The SPJST Awards Banquet will be held at SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone on Saturday, February 28. The banquet schedule will be announced soon and will be included in the February Youth Leader's Packet. All Outreach 2003 awards will be presented at the banquet.

Youth Leaders' Workshop Sunday, February 29 The Youth Leaders Workshop will be held Sunday, February 29 at the new Hilton Garden Inn in Temple (which is scheduled to open in mid-January). The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. and should conclude by 3 p.m. All youth leaders and their assistants are encouraged to attend.

The workshop will include Youth Program updates and important information to assist you in your youth club.

Youth leaders, please complete the registration and return to me no later than Thursday, February 12.

Mark February 28 and 29 on your calendar, and I hope to see you at both the banquet and the workshop. Youth leaders, please note that I must have room accomodations to the hotel on February 12 and those of you turning in registration forms after the 12th will not be guaranteed accomodations at the hotel. 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Thanks to everyone who has sent in donations for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. This year's drive ends March 31. Youth club members receive 20 merit points for donating $2 or more. For donating $5 or more, youth club members also receive a certificate of participation.

Youth Program Projects Operation Valentine - A big thanks to everyone who donated items for our troops. What an overwhelming response we have had! Together, we have collected more than 30 big boxes of items to send to the troops for Valentine's Day. I know they will really appreciate your big and caring hearts.

Eyeglass and Cellular Phone Collection — Since we have started collecting eyeglasses in 2001, you all have donated about 1,000 pairs to people

Wednesday, January 14, 2003—VESTNIK/11 around the world. That's amazing! You are making a big difference to a lot of people! We will continue to collect eyeglasses and cellular phones.

Can Tabs — Please also continue to collect canned drink tabs. Get these to me before May 1. We will make a big presentation on behalf of the entire SPJST Youth Program to the Ronald McDonald House on May 1, which is Join Hands Day. These canned tabs are sold and the money is donated to the House.

SPJST Cookbook Sales If your youth club would like to sell the new SPJST Cookbooks, please contact Margaret Campbell at the Home Office.

The cookbooks are a hot seller as they are currently out of stock, but a new shipment is scheduled to arrive in mid-January.

Very Important — Youth Club and Youth Leader Photos Needed Attention Youth Leaders: Please mail or email a photograph of your youth club and youth leader(s) for the PowerPoint presentation at the February 28 SPJST Awards Banquet. The photos will appear on the screen when your youth club receives its awards. I will greatly appreciate receiving the photos as soon as possible so that I can scan them into the PowerPoint.

Each year, the SPJST sponsors a tee shirt design contest for youth members to create an artistic design for the summer camp tee-shirts.

Who can enter?

SPJST youth members ages six to high school senior.

Judging Designs will be judged by a panel of art specialists. Judging is based on the design's overall appearance and appeal, creativity and originality, and ability to reproduce on a tee shirt.

The Rules • Create a tee-shirt design relating to the 2004 theme: Discover a Treasure — SPJST Youth.

• Submit entry, using only a black pen or a black marker, on an official entry form (available from SPJST youth leaders or the State Youth Director) or draw your design on an 8 1/2" by 11" sheet of plain, white paper. Designs drawn with anything other than a black pen or black marker or designs that are colored will be disqualified.

• Entries must be freehand originals created by the youth member.

• Entries become the property of SPJST and will not be returned.

Participation Awards All participants will receive a participation certificate and 20 merit points.

District Two invites members to experience Blackhawk hockey January 24 District Two has a section reserved for the January 24, 2004 Central Texas Blackhawk Hockey game held at the Bell County Expo Center. The Blackhawks will be playing the Wichita Falls Rustlers. Section 105, located directly behind the penalty box, has been reserved for SPJST on this night. We will be recognized during the game. This social is for everyone in District Two, young and old alike. If you have never been to a hockey game, please make plans to attend and enjoy an action-packed night with other members.

The game begins at 7:05 p.m. The cost for active members ages 13 to adult is $5.

Active members, ages 12 and under, will be able to get tickets for $2 each. Non-active members and guests will be able to get tickets at $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Please call me or your lodge's youth leader before January 16 to order your discount tickets.

The December 14, 2003 meeting of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by Vice President Kyle Kaspar. President Kirby Bubela conducted the meeting.

Jessica Fucik led Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Youth Club

Motto and prayer.

The register was read. Guests were Jaca Hernandez and Donovan Krpec.

The minutes were , read and approved.

Travis Krpec gave the treasurer's report. Kenna Bubela gave the due's report.

This month's social was a Christmas social held in conjunction with adult lodge at Taiton Community Center on December 14, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. for the social and lunch served at 12:15 p.m.

The charity project for this month included collecting canned goods for Toys for Tots; Operation Valentine items; and making angels to give to the residents at Win Crest Assisted Living Center.

Our Youth Leader Lisa Bubela reported that the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive will be conducted by our lodge in January, the high school seniors need to turn their scholarship forms in by February 1, 2004, and Camp Tee-Shirt designs are due by January 30, 2004. Members were reminded of some important dates for the upcoming year. Youth Leader Bubela also informed, the members of the changes to the Merit Point System which will be made effective immediately. District Six Youth Counselor Marcy Dorotik was present at the meeting and discussed the changes to the' Merit Point System and a proposal from the Youth Department which will be presented at the Convention in June 2004. She also stated that camp will be held the last weekend in June at Camp Lone Star with the theme being Treasure Hunt/Pirates, and District Six Youth Achievement Day will be held in Taiton this coming year.

Celebrating a birthday this month is Jessica Fucik.

Door prizes were exchanged.

Members then sang Christmas carols before opening their gifts.

Youth Club starts the New Year with a busy schedule Dear Vestnik Readers, We started this month out by going to Six Flags with our district. We couldn't have asked for better weather.

The next day, we held our monthly youth club meeting. We took cakes to the nursing home on January 7.

Our next social will be January 16 and we will make valentines and take down the Christmas decorations, and on January 18, we are going to the movies with our youth club. We were also reminded that our tee-shirt designs are due on January 3.

Youth Club lock-in a night of fun, games

Dear Readers, The SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club had a meeting on Sunday, January 4, 2004. We brought items for the soldiers for Operation Valentine. I brought some shampoo, lotion, and kleenex. I'm a flag bearer and I got to hang the flag on the flag pole outside then led the youth club with the Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club pledge.

We decided to go skating after our next meeting on February 1. We will have our meeting at 1 p.m. then leave for Brenham and go to Silver Wings to skate. We are making Valentine cards for the S.P.J.S.T. nursing homes and the VA hospital.

I brought door prizes to the meeting, but didn't win this time. The meeting was fun, and we had cookies and koolaid for snack. It was very good. My Aunt Susie is a great youth leader. My birthday is coming up on January 23. I will be eight years old.

Youth Club reports on January meeting Dear Members and Friends; At our meeting in January, we discussed what kind of fund raiser we should have. We decided on a bake sale January 8. Also, we talked about what kind of community service we should do.

We made Valentine's Day cards for the people at the Will-o-Bell Nursing Home in Bartlett and for the people at the SPJST nursing home. Next, we worked on our scrapbook. We are very excited about doing a scrapbook this year!

Finally, we concluded the meeting.

See you at the bake sale and at the next meeting on the first Saturday in February.

Dear Readers, SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club had a lock-in on January 2, 2004, and it was a lot of fun. We played SPJST football, simon-says, watched movies, and played a lot of other fun games.

Some of the kids stayed up all night, but I wasn't one of them.

For our next meeting, we are to bring snacks for our Czech dance and make valentine's for the rest home.
