How About You? We all remember Mark Twain. He gave us all those wonderful stories about Tom Sawyer and life on the Mississippi River. In addition, he wrote many essays about life in the mining camps and roughing it in the Wild West. He left behind an incredible volume of work.

Self-educated, Mark Twain was a brilliant man of great humor, wonderful language and strong opinions. He was also very much in tune with the world around him. In his book, Life on the Mississippi, published in 1883, he expresses his pity for river boat pilots.

To them, he says, the Great River is perceived as a series of confounding bends and twists. No longer is the river a thing of majestic beauty. The mighty Mississippi — the very source of their livelihood—is little more than an enormous obstacle. The romance and wonder of its graceful curves, reflected images and woody heights is gone.

That's what happens, Twain says, when we start taking things for granted. It's like that with other things in life, too. Regardless of your station in life, it can be easy to overlook the beauty and wonder around you. I'll

use myself as an example. In spite of the fact that I was raised on a farm, I do believe it took living in the city for me to really appreciate the wide open spaces and the peaceful silence that accompanies a night in the country.

Along those same lines, living and working a 1,000 miles away from home helped me to develop a greater appreciation of not just Texas but also of the SPJST and the important role it can play in one's life. Having said that, I believe that the dynamic potential of our Society, like the awesome majesty of the Mississippi, is sometimes overlooked. Whether your interests lie in satisfying your social needs of establishing your financial security, the SPJST can be your organization.

Our fraternal system is comprised of more than 100 lodges all around the state. With altruistic leadership and initiative, the local lodge can bring the members together with their families and friends in wholesome fellowship and service to the community. What's more, the SPJST has the advantage of being able to bring people together, regardless of their political party, religious affiliation or social status. The only real barriers that we have are those that we build ourselves — and these are easy enough to identify.

Get An Early Start The first step to achieving a new level of progress in 2004 is making a conscious decision to break the ties that bind us. One place to start is by identifying the factors that work against our fraternal system: There is no room for selfishness. Rather, let us concentrate our energies on our mission and doing those things that foster teamwork. Strong lodges are the building blocks of a strong society.

Second, let us take the new world head on. May we take the initiative at all levels in 2004 to evaluate and adjust our procedures and programs that we may better address the needs and expectations of our members. As so many of you know, lodge meetings and activities can be so much more than merely fulfilling ritual obligations to retain our fraternal status.

Finally, let us continue to work in 2004 to ensure the financial security of our members. One of the cornerstones of the strength and success .of the SPJST is founded in our insurance programs which have contributed to much to the security and welfare of our members.

The SPJST has an abundance of talented members to carry on the benevolent work that the pioneers and leaders of our fraternal society started.

As 2003 draws to a close, may we pause for a moment, step back and realize the great potential that we still possess . . . By working together in the spirit of brotherhood, we can achieve even greater heights as a fraternal benefit society in 2004.

District Six thanks everyone for contributing to the success of the Annual Barbecue Cookoff and Festival Dear Vestnik Readers: The District Six Fifth Annual Barbecue Cookoff and Festival was held September 12 and 13, 2003. Thank you so much to everyone who gave of their time to this very successful weekend!

A special thank you to Debbie and Glenn Sczech for chairing the cookoff and doing a fantastic job! Also, thanks to Tria and Kris Svatek for their help along side the Sczechs and to Phil Dornak for the great job of emceeing the trophy award presentation.

Thank you to Leroy Kaspar and all of Lodge 30, Taiton for taking care of making sure the grounds and hall of the Taiton Community Center were ready for the weekend.

As chairman of the prize drawing and craft booths, I want to extend a personal thank you to everyone who helped and participated. Thank you to all who donated to the prize drawing and to everyone who bought chances.

Likewise, thank you to Lodge 8, Weimar for taking care of the prize drawing booth on the festival day. Also, a big thanks to Greg and Lisa Bubela for donating the

printing of the prize drawing tickets.

And to Annie Vahalik, our treasurer, for the cookoff events, thank you so much for your time and for keeping everything straight during the cookoff days and throughout the year.

A big congratulations to Lodge 32, Victoria's "Just Kookin" team for winning the District Six Traveling Barbecue Cookoff Trophy.

With everyone working together, we were able to make our contributions a total of $3,000 this year! SPJST records 2,748 applications written through November in Outreach 2003 program Through the end of November, the SPJST had received 2,748 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Outreach 2003 membership drive is to write at least 2,205 applications in 2003.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Outreach 2003 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through November 30, 2003.

Hi! With the absence of our President, Brother Johnnie Krizan, our Second Vice President, Brother Milton Peterson, called our meeting to order on Sunday, December 7 at 2:20 p.m.

The Pledge of Allegiarice was led by Anna Dulock and Lakn Dieterich, with the SPJST motto recited by Michael Ann Moore. Thanks, ladies.

There was a moment of silence held for all departed brothers and sisters, especially Sister Martha Monthie. It was reported that we had 42 members and one guest, Glenda Gerik, present at our meeting.

Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Secretary, was called upon for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. Sister Barbara read some thank you notes from the family of Martha Monthie and from Rose Mynar

There was also a thank you note from Brooke Craig for our donation towards her participating in the Miss Texas Teen Pageant in Houston, Texas. Brooke did not win, but it was a great experience for her. I believe she placed in Miss Congeniality.

Our Treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, was called upon for her report. Her report was accepted as given. Sister Peggy also gave the youth club report. She reported that the youth club took cakes to the rest home on November 5 and again on December 3. The youth have been working on their crafts for the rest home for the Christmas holidays.

Sister Peggy also reported that the youth were going to Six Flags and the Lock-in at Lodge 84, Dallas on January 3, 2004. Have fun, kids!

This meeting will include installation of officers.

Brother Jerry Kucera, District District Three State Field Representative, was called upon to speak. He reported that our lodge now has 75 applications in. He encouraged all sales representatives to get busy and help District Three and our lodge meet their quotas before December 31. He mentioned that our lodge needed a total of 90 to meet last year's quota.

Brother Jerry Kucera was on a committee with Brothers Al Soukup and Ray. Marek for selecting the Fraternalist of the Year in our lodge.

Brother Jerry reported that there were three candidates— Sisters Georgie Soukup and Barbara Hykel, and Brother Milton Peterson. The membership then selected whomever they wanted by closed ballots. Our Fraternalist of the Year is Sister Barbara Jean Hykel. Congratulations, Barbara! First and Second Vice Presidents, Brothers Ray Perez and Milton Peterson presented Sister Barbara with a smoked turkey and ham.

Sister Irene Schiemenz, Sunshine Committee, gave her report of a sympathy card sent to Rose Mynar, upon the death of her mother, Martha Monthie. Sympathy cards were sent to Kristie Schier, Coy and Riley and to Monroe and Mary Lander, upon the death of a grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Katie Drews. Our deepest sympathy to these families upon their loss.

Sister Schiemenz also reported sending a card to James and Rita Watson upon the arrival of their new baby boy. Congratulations to the Watson family! A get-well card was sent to Danny. Pavlas after his surgery.

A thinking of you card was sent to Johnny and Evelyn Muehistein. Sister Irene thanked Evelyn Bezdek for her donation of Christmas cards to be sent to our rest home residents.

New Year's Eve Social It was brought up under new business about having a New Year's Eve social on Wednesday, December 31, 2003. It was voted in so be sure and come out on New Year's Eve for some good fun, fellowship, and snacks. The hall will be open around 6:30 p.m.

Since we were having this social, the social for January 2 — two days later — was voted out.

We only had one in attendance with a December birthday. Happy birthday, Amber Halbert! Amber just became 16 years of age, and it was noted that five youths became adults in our lodge this year. They are Brooke Craig, Michael Ann Moore, Brad Dulock, Christi Sparkman, and Amber Halbert.

Did any of you notice the beautiful display of flags when you came to our meeting? Thanks to Don Urbanovsky of the Boy Scouts for this nice deed for our Christmas celebration.

Our door prize winners were Sisters Lydia Dobecka and Brooke Craig.

Congratulations! The progressive door prize winner not present was Thomas E. Polansky.

The meeting was then adjourned until January 4, 2004 at 2 p.m. Thanks to the Barbara Hykel family for our meal at this meeting.

After the meeting, everyone enjoyed some fellowship with the youth club presenting its Christmas program with the coming of Santa Claus. Then we all enjoyed receiving gifts from under the tree. Various door prizes were drawn for real nice gifts throughout the day. These were too numerous for me to get all the names.

Also the youth and the bar had door prizes that day, and I was unable to get all the winners. Thanks to all who participated in our door prize drawings and thanks to those who brought door prizes.

Next Meeting January 4 See you at our socials, especially New Year's Eve on December 31.

Since we are having this social, please note that we have dispensed with the January 2 social as it is only two days later. Our next meeting will be on January 4, 2004, with installation of officers.

Lodge 24, Cyclone reports on December meeting Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday, December 8, 2003 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Brian Vanicek.. A moment of silence was observed for deceased members. The minutes were emailed

by Secretary Ginger Greger and read by the President. Correspondence was read from District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and from the youth club thanking the lodge for the donation for the Lack's Trim-a-Tree. The treasurer's report was given by Barbara Macek. She had a detailed report that was well received.

The youth club met on December 13 before the Christmas party.

Birthday celebrants for the month of December were David Nauert, Christopher Cabla, and Arlene Mayeux. We hope that they had a special day. Wilbert Mikeska gave the hall report. He is busy now.

Under old business, the Rules and Regulation Committee recommended a mileage allowance and it was adopted.

Under new business, the purchase of a new commercial-grade range was approved for the kitchen. The Board will see to its installation. We still need a microwave, pots, and bar stools.

2004 Spring Gala April 4 The Spring Gala is going to be on April 4. Arrarigements are already being made to have a very special guest in attendance this year.

The Rogers Senior Project Celebration fund raiser is January 24, 2003. We are donating the hall as part of our tax agreement with Rogers ISD.

We will also buy one of their tickets.

There were no door prizes.

We discussed advertising the hall and our lodge's image The meeting adjourned at 8 p.m.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje members celebrate in December SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Christmas party and installation of officers for the 2004 year was held on Sunday December 7, 2003 at the lodge hall in Hillje. Ninety-two members and guests enjoyed the meal catered by Duson Diner. A prize drawing was held by the youth club and Rudy Laitkep and his Czech Mates provided entertainment for the evening.

Lodges, Ennis member Warren Haskovec promoted to Captain Congratulations to Warren L. Haskovec, U.S. Coast Guard on his promotion to Captain on August 1, 2003. Captain Haskovec is the son of Ivan and Allene Haskovec of Lakewood, Colorado. Warren is a member of Lodge 25, Ennis, Texas. He is a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, Class of 1981.

Ivan Haskovec, born and raised in Ennis, is the grandson of Wesley Haskovec, one of the founders of SPJST. This makes Warren the great-grandson. The home place of Wesley Haskovec is just east off of Highway 34 near Ennis.

Captain Haskovec is stationed at Coast Guard Headquarters Intelligence Division. The Coast Guard is now a branch of the U.S. Government's Department of Homeland Security.

Henry and Marie Ann Ripple Celebrate 40th Wedding Anniversary Congratulations to Henry E. Ripple, Jr. and Marie Ann (Macha) Ripple who celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on December 4. The Ripples, who have resided in Taylor for the past 40 years, were united in marriage on December 4, 1963 at the Taylor Brethren Church in Taylor.

The Ripples celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary Sunday, December 14, 2003 with their family. Henry and Marie Ann have two children, Rex and Sherill Engelhardt of Austin; and Trey and Heather Ripple of Austin; and three grandchildren, Tanner and Tahni Engelhardt of Austin; and Trent Shumate of Austin.

Henry and Marie Ann Ripple and their children are members of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor.

Lodge 93, Hobson reports on annual meeting Lodge 93, Hobson, held its meeting on Thursday, November 20, 2003 at Palak's. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive was explained. The donation to the servicemen was to be sent as cash to the Home Office in Temple.

Our meeting opened at 10:40 a.m. and as usual, Kitty Rippen stood with her right hand over her heart to remind us the Pledge of Allegence is first.

Welcomes went to 30 women and four men. We had two guests, Linda Riddel and Dawn Anderson Durham.

Several cards were passed for signatures to be sent out to Billye Starr, Peggy Hubenak and Lorenda Manasco. Also a sympathy card was sent to the Louise Oujesky family. A moment of silence was observed for Louise Oujesky and George Tesar. We will miss them both.

A short discussion was held about our November outing. Most everyone enjoyed the lunch, shopping and the Cattle Drive. Dawn Durham presented a talk on her business of selling medical equipment. There were several questions which she answered knowledgeably. She also brought a variety of beautiful gift baskets she puts together and sells as her part-time business.

Joyce gave report of the lodge activities. The New Year's Eve dance will include music by Charley Patterson, She urge people to make reservations.

Joyce also said we have a lot of good bands scheduled for the first three months of the new year. She reported that we donated $1,767 to Meal on Wheels. This was money that we earned from our charity dance.

James Greer was our only birthday attendee for December. He was our Mr. Wright in our fun game to exchange gifts. We sure had trouble following his directions. We then had show and tell and I think some people forgot we had a $5 limit.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch.

Corine Cranfill gave thanks for our meal.

I personally wish to thank everyone for the many cards and condolences for the loss of my sister, Louise Oujesky. I will miss her a lot.

The Concho Valley Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society (CHS) of Texas held its last quarterly meeting of 2003, November 23 at the SPJST hall Lodge 49 in Rowena.

Members elected the following as officers for 2004: President Nancy Day; Vice President Pauline Mazur; Secretary Beverly Teplicek; Treasurer Toni Schroeder; Historian Nancy Kloboucnik; Honorary Reporter Pauline Shiller; and Reporter Janette Shockley.

Meeting dates for 2004 are February 15; May 16; August 15; and November 21.

The Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society hosted the CHS of Texas annual fall state meeting Saturday, November 15 at the SPJST Lodge hall 49, Rowena, Texas.

Rowena: Small Czech Community Rowena, a small Czech community in far west Texas, separated by 220 plus miles from the rest of Czech communities of Central and south Texas.

Rowena, the home of the first Czech family of Mary and P.J. Baron, two daughters, Julia, Mary, and son, Edward brought the first section of land and settled in Rowena in November 1899. The land was bought with nickel (five cent) cotton, and land sold for $2.50 an acre.

When I saw the Watkins Cook Books in the SPJST Museum, my mind wandered back to the times before super centers and ordering online. Those were the days when door to door sales persons came to your house with products. The customers had a personal connection with these sales people, and they had one with their customers.

I am not saying that life was better. It was different and certainly harder in many ways, but there was a connection with one another that seems to be lacking in today's world.

The Watkins Company's offerings of spices, seasoning, vanilla and extracts are a good example. The company was founded in 1868, and

its product line was sold door to door.

William Kolba of Temple sold the Watkins products in that city for many years. This man and so many others were part of the community and the families of their customers.

They brought the world to the homemaker at her door along with the newest recipes.

Today, we receive the world news and our consumer products in a box, in a mall, or online. While we can so easily get connected to anyone or anything with modern teleCOMIllunications systems, I am not so sure that we communicate as well as we once did.

The Czech community in Texas seems to carry on its common connection with one another while also reaching out to new people and to new ideas.

What a Meeting!

Wow! What a day! What a meeting! Our day started early, about 6:30 a.m. We arrived at the hall and activities were there already. Cars, pickups, vans, and trailers—you name it.

Everyone hustling to unload and to display their goods on the vendor tables! There was beautiful items on display all over the hall from Czech costumes— krojs— for young and old

by Maggies Fabric Shop from West, Texas; books; jewelry; glassware; crystal; a lot of information on Czech heritage and culture; photos and stories of early czech immigrants; and a silent auction, our main fund raiser.

Everyone enjoyed the morning with a hot cup of coffee, orange juice, kolaches and the famous Czech handshakes of dobre rano—good morning;

vitame vas—we greet you; jak se mate?—how are you? By 11 a.m., the acres of the parking lots were filled to capacity where some 164-plus guests had registered. The hall was decorated in patriotic decor in red, white, and blue. The morning program began at 10 a.m. with an opening prayer by Monsignor Larry Droll, St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Wall, Texas. The program to salute and pay tribute to America, the greatest nation in the world, a nation under God, with liberty and justice for all followed by local singing groups of Czech, German, and English. The program ended at 11:30 a.m. The prayer before the meal was given by Reverend Tommy Tallas, Pastor of Wall Brethren Church. A delicious meal of roast beef catered by the Friends of Olfen School was enjoyed by all.

The state meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. by State President Evelyn Skopil and concluded about 4 p.m. followed by a polka dance by the Haviak-Batla Time Band.

Thank You! In closing, on behalf of the Concho Valley CHS, a very special thank you to the state of Texas CHS for your financial support and giving us the honor to host the state meeting. To the 12 chapters that came many, many miles traveling the long distance, thank you very much for your support.

To SPJST Lodge 49, thank you for the use of your hall. To our local chapter, officers, and members, thank you very much for all the hard work and planning to make our fall meeting a great big success. In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy On behalf of Lodge 54, West officers and members, we wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, RUDOLF MATULA, age 87 of Penelope, who passed away late Thursday, October 30, 2003 at his residence.

A rosary was recited 10 a.m.

Monday, November 3 at the Church of the Nativity, B.V.M. in Penelope.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 10:15 a.m. after the rosary at the Church of the Nativity, B.V.M. with Reverend Bruno Mikolajczyk as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery near West. The family received visitors from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, November 2 at the funeral home.

Mr. Matula was born on December 29, 1915 in Waukomis, Oklahoma, the son of John and Catherine (Kracmer) Matula. He attended St. Mary's School in West and entered the United States Army serving during World War II. He was a farmer most of his life, retiring in 1990. He married Ruby A. Pribyla on January 6, 1962 in Penelope. He was a member of Church of the Nativity, B.V.M. in Penelope, SPJST Lodge 54, West and Lodge 66, Waco, and V.F.W. Post 4819.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Toby Matula; and sisters, Katherine Gallia and Edith Matula.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 41 years, Ruby Matula of Penelope; son, Danny Matula and wife, Cathy of West; sister, Bessie Rejcek of West; granddaughter, Daniella Matula; stepgranddaughter, Bonnie Dixon and husband, Matt; great-grandson, Haden Dixon; brother in-law, Pete Gallia of Penelope; sister in-law, Dorothy Matula of Penelope; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Active pallbearers were Steve Neckar, Philip Holt, Bill Neckar, Matt Dixon, Kyle Aleman, and David Kucera.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Penelope Church Building Fund; or West Ambulance Association.

Aderhold Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.

The Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 54, West wishes to express our sympathy to the family of our departed member, NANCY BOGGESS WEBB, age 83, who passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2003 in Richardson, Texas.

She graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in elementary education. During World War II, she did a tour of duty in Germany with the special services of the Red Cross.

After returning to the states, she taught school for a number of years.

She married Wade Hill Webb on March 2, 1946. She enjoyed her family, friends, gardening, basket-making, decorating, antiques, and traveling.

Sister Webb was a member of Acton United Methodist Church, and SPJST Lodge 54, West.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wade of 57 years, who passed away May 28, 2003.

Survivors include daughters and their spouses, James P. and Cathy Webb Trotter, Royce G. and Cullan Webb Brimage; grandchildren, James P. Trotter, III, Nancy Trotter Brown, Nell Collier Trotter, and Wade Webb Brimage; beloved canine companion, Patrick Webb and numerous loving nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 4 p.m.

Sunday, June 22 at Restland Memorial Chapel in Dallas, Texas. Interment followed at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23 at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco, Texas.

She was born April 25, 1922 in East Bernard to the late James and Sophie Dybala Hradecky. She was a homemaker, a Catholic, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Survivors include sisters, Ellen Raabe of Edna and Edith Foster of Olivia; and brother, Aldrich Hradecky of El Campo. She is preceded in death by husband, Charles Orsak; and brothers, Stanley Hradecky, Jimmie Hradecky, and George Hradecky.

Visitation was at Triska Funeral Home chapel. A Catholic Daughter rosary was recited at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, December 11 at St. Philip's Catholic Church in El Campo.

Services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 11 at the church with the Reverend Gary Janak officiating.

Burial was at Holy Cross Memorial Park in El Campo.

Youth Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club reports on December meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, We held our monthly meeting on the December 7. We discussed upcoming events and practiced for our Christmas program. After our meeting, we stayed for the adult meeting which was followed by our Christmas party and program. Fun was had by all. 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club reports on December meeting Lodge

President Ashley Sczech called our meeting to order at 10:45 a.m. Our President led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Four members and two adults were present.

We discussed items to buy for Operation Valentine. The youth club would like to thank everyone for donating prizes to our prize drawing and for those who bought tickets. The money raised will go to buying supplies for Operation Valentine and will be loved by many soliders.

Our Youth Leader and Ashley Sczech provided us with homemade cookies for dessert after our meal.

Our next meeting will be January 11, 2004 in Hillje at 1:25 p.m.

Lane Griggs

The Lodge 89, Rosebud Youth Club welcomes its newest member, Lane Griggs. He is the son of Buddy and Angela (Marek) Griggs.

Lane's brothers and sisters are Lance, Cade, and Ambi. Lane enjoys playing football, baseball, playing with GI Joes, and gymnastics.

Lane attends Bluebonnet Trails Elementary School in Manor, Texas where he is in the second grade. Lane was awarded the Presidential Physical Fitness Award, a prestigous honor as only four out of about 100 children are able to achieve this award.

Lodge 186, Caldwell Youth Club reports on Christmas party Dear Members, On Tuesday, December 9, 2003, our youth club had a Christmas party at the adult meeting. We had a lot of members and guests there. We had roast beef with mashed potatoes, vegetables, rolls, peach cobbler and cookies for dessert.

We drew names for Christmas presents.

Our youth club sang Christmas carols to our members and guests. We had a great time. You all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for a year or more are invited to submit their requests for scholarship application forms for the 2004 academic year. Established in 1982, the SPJST Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and through contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. In 2003, the SPJST awarded a total of 67 scholarships for $67,500 through its scholarship program.
