Eyeglass Recycling Program District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer presents State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny with eyeglasses donated by members of District Seven. "The SPJST continues to collect old eyeglasses to be recycled worldwide," says Sister Zavodny, who is coordinating the effort. "Thanks to all who have turned in eyeglasses," she says, adding that the agency also accepts hearing aids and cellular phones. The 2004 scholarship application season has arrived!

Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for a year or more are invited to submit their requests for scholarship application forms for the 2004 academic year. Established in 1982, the SPJST Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and through contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. In 2003, the SPJST awarded a total of 67 scholarships for $67,500 through its scholarship program. To obtain an SPJST General Scholarship application and complete guidelines, please contact the SPJST Home Office at (800) 727-7578 or (254) 773-1575 and ask for the Scholarship Department.

A&M graduate who was active in his support of both A&M and Czech nationality organizations during his lifetime.

The CEFT Czech Fellowship at Texas A&M brings advanced graduate students from the two major Moravian universities — Masaryk University in Brno and Palacky University in Olomouc to work toward a Master's or Ph.D. in the Department of English at Texas A&M. In return, these advanced students teach Czech language lessons — open to both A&M students and members of the general public — and perform other services to the Texas Czech community on a regular basis.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville Christmas party December 14 Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, November 9, 2003 at the Legion Tap Room at 2 p.m. with Helen and Patsy Zabransky as greeters.

President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Margaret Smotek. Election of officers for 2004 was held. All present officers were reelected except for Secretary Mary Ann Sustaita who did not wish to serve again. Mary Ann was thanked for the wonderful job she did. Election of a secretary was tabled till the next meeting.

Secretary Mary Ann Sustaita read the minutes to the last meeting and the correspondence. Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave the financial report and Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Annie Vahalik reported on upcoming SPJST activities, meetings, and tournaments.

Youth Leader Shirley Kalmus reported on the youth club activities.

They will present a Christmas program at the December meeting and sponsor bunco playing for everyone with prizes to be given.

Sunshine Co-Chairman Lillie Balusek reported Evelyn Holy and Vicky Zak assisted with bingo for the residents at Stevens Convalscent Center. Co-Chairman Margaret Smotek reported on the in-room visits to the residents at Hallettsville Rehab made by Mary Matula, Helen Zabransky, and herself. A get well card was sent to Victor Vasek.

On a recommendation of the committee, Raymond Sustaita was elected our lodge's 2003 Fraternalist of the Year. Congratulations!

Contributions were made to the Lavaca County Senior Citizens Program; Hallettsville Manna Food Pantry; and the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Fund. Also $50 was given to the SPJST Operation Valentine to purchase items that will

Our next meeting with the Christmas party will be Sunday, December 14 at the Legion Hall at 2 p.m. The youth will present a Christmas program, and Santa will stop by for a visit. The youth club will host a bunco party for everyone. Door prizes will be given and lunch served as usual.

Karel Jonas No. 28, East Bernard reports on November meeting Lodge

Dear Members, Being that "'is the season to be jolly," Lodge Karel Jonas' monthly meeting on the 14th of December will begin at 1 p.m. (1300 hours) — one hour earlier — because of the fraternal hour buffet meal which will be baked ham. It will convene in the conference room at the East Bernard Branch Library at 746 Clubside Drive. There will be some items to be discussed on the agenda. Also, it was asked that members who plan to attend, to please bring a side dish to compliment the hour.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Everett Kaminsky asked that members bring two items from the Valentine's Day Care Package list for our troops overseas so they could be sent to SPJST Headquarters. You can check on these items with Vice President Jeanette Kaminsky (979) 335-4461; or Lodge Secretary Helen Kelner (281) 342-2624. All items have to be brought into this meeting so they can be sent in time overseas.

November Meeting Report The meeting on the 9th of November started with the usual opening plus grace being given by Glenn Kaminsky. It recessed for the fraternal hour buffet luncheon of fried chicken.

The meeting reconvened after sufficient time to eat and several items of business were handled quickly.

As to the elections, the officers to serve in 2004 will remain the same as 2003. The delegates will be Glenn Kaminsky, Everett Kaminsky, A.J. "Tony" Kelner, and Helen Kelner.

A note from this writer to all delegates: As always, the rumor mill is running at flank speed as the navy would say, and this writer urges all delegates to keep both their ears and minds open. Be very cautious when someone suggests that this or that will be best for the company —referring to our Society as such. Remember, too, do not give up too much authority of the delegates because someone says that it is the best way to go. Once authority is given up, it cannot be taken back.

Finally, we wish to thank State Field Representative Karen Kaspar for visiting with us at this meeting, making her report and assisting with the elections.

32, Victoria Christmas party December 10 Lodge

We want to congratulate Margaret Kucera and Joseph Stastny, Jr. for receiving their 50-year pins at our September meeting, and we want to say congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Elsik for becoming proud grandparents of triplets this month.

The lodge will have its Christmas party on December 10, 2003 at the Victoria Electric Co-op building. We will have a catered meal. Members will bring desserts and a door prize.

The meeting of Lodge 35, Elk on November 9, 2003 was called to order

by President Randy Pavelka. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. The president asked the members to stand in a moment of silence for Barbara Hefelfinger, our departed member.

Secretary Carla Pavelka read the minutes from the October meeting, and they were approved as read.

Treasurer Barbara Pavelka gave her report. All the chairpersons gave their reports. The lodge bought a new United States Flag.

63, Sweet Home Christmas party December 7 Lodge

Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting, social and Christmas party on December 7, 2003 at the Queen of Peace Parish Hall in Sweet Home, Texas beginning at 12 noon.

We will have a happy hour followed by a catered meal comprised of roast beef and all the sides. Members are asked to bring some Christmas desserts.

Someone with a birthday in October, November or December will win a birthday cake baked by Earline Zabransky.

Following the meal, a business meeting will be held. This is our most important meeting of the year as officers are elected and committees appointed. Since 2004 is also a state convention year, delegates will be elected for the convention to be held in June in Temple. There will also be a discussion on the possibility of hosting a district meeting next year. An insurance sales update will be presented.

Door prizes will be awarded after the meeting. If you would like to donate items for the door prizes, anything is always appreciated. Since this is our Christmas party, gifts will be exchanged. The price limit is $3 and there will be a men, women and children division.

Santa might not be able to make it to our little town — busy time of year for him, you know — but we can still celebrate the Christmas season with food, drink, gifts and good cheer. Hope to see many of you on December 7.

66, Waco reports on November meeting Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President George Pauling on November 16, 2003 at Linden Hall in Elm Mott with all officers present.

There were 27 members present with

one guest, District Three Director Johnnie Krizan.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and Motto.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members Lillian Shaw, Kevin Gaidusek, and Rudolf Matula.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the October 19 meeting and they were approved as read. Sister Dana read correspondence from Vice President of the Supreme Lodge Gene McBride on the update of our quota sold for this year. We have sold 56 new certificates. Sister Dana also read correspondence from SecretaryTreasurer of the Supreme Lodge Lanita Anglin needing updates on members names, addresses, and phone numbers and she also sent in revised delegate information for the June 14 16 Convention. Sister Dana also received a letter from the Ronald McDonald House. President Pauling had Sister Dana read a letter from Martha Durham asking for contributions to the Czech Education Foundation of Texas. Linden Hall will make a donation to this foundation.

Sister Mary Alice Langlotz gave her Fraternal Activities Coordinator's (FAC) report. She welcomed State FAC Gladys Yates to our meeting today. She read a letter she received from Gladys Yates for the November functions. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive is now in progress. Two new lodges have been chartered - Lodge 229, Abilene and Lodge 221, Harker Heights. Sister Gladys stated that the golf tournament was a success. The proceeds will be divided among the ENC and LAM. The Fraternalist of the Year form has to be turned in to the SPJST Home Office

by December 15, 2003. Sister Gladys also wanted to remind everyone of the Open House at the Home Office on Monday, December 1 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sister Mary Alice gave the state tournament dates for the year of 2004.

They are State Taroky — February 7, 2004 at Lodge 48 Beyersville; State 42 Tournament at Lodge 13, Dime Box; State Straight Domino Tournament at Lodge 66, Waco on March 6, 2004; State Barbecue Cookoff at Lodge 29, Taylor March 12 - 14; State Horseshoe Tournament on May 15, 2004 at Lions Park in Temple; and State Golf Tournament at Sammons Golf Course Temple on October 9, 2004.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Michael Galler reported that the committee met on November 16. Today, the lodge is furnishing sandwiches with members bringing desserts. He reminded everyone of the Christmas party which well be held on Sunday, December 7, 2003. The doors will open at 2 p.m. with a short meeting and installation of officers at 3 p.m.

The meal, which is being catered by Eddie Ray's Catering, will be served at 4 p.m. with a short youth program and Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus at 5 p.m.

Following Santa door prizes will be distributed with a dance beginning at 6 to 6:30 p.m. to 9 or 9:30 p.m. It would be appreciated if each family would bring a gift for the door prize for an adult and/or child marked that way on the package.

Chairman of the Cheer and Condolence Committee Emma Ceska reported that she sent sympathy cards

to Tom and Karen Gaidusek on the death of their son, Kevin Gaidusek; and to the family of Rudolf Matula.

Sister Emma received a nice thank you note from Tom and Karen Gaidusek. It was also reported that Irene Mueller's sister in-law, Doris Glatter, wife of Tony Glatter is very ill. She will have surgery within the next week. Please keep her in your prayers.

Sister Diana Engelke gave the bookkeeping report.

Youth Report Youth Leader, Sister Debbie Galler, reported that there were six youth and four adults present at today's meeting.

She reported that the Texas Fraternal Congress had 124 youth participants.

Lodge 66 had two winners. In the Photography category, Sherrie Yates won third place in the six to eight year group and in the Art category, Leanne Dujka won first place. Congratulations to our talented youth. Sister Debbie reported that the youth will practice for the Christmas program on November 19 at 7 p.m. and November 30 at 3 p.m. The youth will have their Christmas party on December 14 at Mr. Ghatti's. She reminded the youth of the Open House at the Home Office on December 1. The youth are collecting soda pop tabs to recycle for the Ronald McDonald House until the end of April. They are also collecting items for the soldiers until December 14. The youth will have a prize drawing at the Christmas party on December 7. The youth will make Santa treat bags on November 30 and also place cards for the head table. The cake was brought by Douglas Galler.

Sister Mary Alice Langlotz gave the Libbie Parma Trust Fund report. She will be making a deposit with donations made from some of our lodge members.

Sister Darlene Engelke read names of candidates for membership. Anna Meador wrote up Charles R. Meador, Jr.; Randall Dillard Sr. wrote up Nathan A. Dillard and Hannah K. Dillard; Mandy Talamantez wrote up Devon Scott Dillard and Sean Kelly Dillard. All were accepted in Lodge 66.

Sister Darlene Engelke read resolutions of sympathy on Lillian Shaw, Kevin Gaidusek and Rudolf Matula.

Brother Bayer talked about getting more members for our lodge to reach our quota we need 10 more members.

He said insurance sales are doing good, that SPJST is growing, and that the year 2004 should be an up year for us.

The date of the District Seven Spring Meeting was set for sunday, March 14, 2004. Details to come later.

The November monthly donation was approved to be given to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum to help pay for the new brochures. The amount of the donation was $100.

There was a discussion, then a motion was approved to hold a "No Bake - Bake Sale" again next year.

This has been a successful fund raiser in the past.

The next meeting is on Sunday, December 21 beginning at 2 p.m. It is the annual meeting. At this meeting, officers and delegates to the convention for next year will be elected. It would be nice to see a larger attendance for this meeting. We need the output of all the members so do come to voice your opinion. We will have the usual svacina after the meeting.

Members are asked to bring food to share.

There were several door prizes.

Some were donated by Brother Bob Bayer, for which we thank him and some were left over from a health fair held at Sokol Hall. The winners were Nancy Wilks, Frank L. Sacky, Charlie Majek, Joe Nemecek, Helen Pavelka, Clem Kasparek, Savanah White, George Marek, and Ruth Marek.

Lodge 84, Dallas Christmas party December 14 Dear Members; Our meeting of Lodge 84, Dallas was called to order at 7:40 p.m. and much discussing immediately began about how our lodge has taken a new look— new drapes on stage and in our conference room and a brand new air conditioning unit has been installed -

no more complaints about the heat.

We have Brother George Reznik to thank for help in finding the company that did a fine job of installing the big unit. We also have him and Brother John Becan to thank for cleaning the air ducts among other things, and thank you Brother Harry and Sister Willie Matus for installing the carpeting on the stage sides and Brother John and Sister Jereldine Becan for donating the carpet. Other items that these hard working members have given during this make our lodge home look beautiful. Our dance floor is ready for your dancing pleasure as well as the green floor was redone.

Bathrooms have been beautified.

There are so many members to thank for hard work and donations. One member who saw the temperature rise during our Czechfest and noted that a new air conditioning unit would solve the problem. Brother Emil Mancell asked to have one installed and donated the money. So when you come to our lodge and as you dance in cool comfort, when you see Brother Mancell, you might thank him for the large machine on the roof. The members join you as we say thank you, Brother Mancell.

Dallas - Ennis Fraternal Council meets December 8 at Lodge 94 for its annual Christmas party - Lodge 84 is to bring desserts if you plan to come.

Christmas Party December 14 Our Christmas party is December 14 starting at 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. for social hour; 6 p.m. dinner; and at 7 p.m., the Christmas program. If you plan to come, please bring a side dish and dessert to go with cold cuts the

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the Teen Club met on November 12.

They made favors for Thanksgiving and Christmas for the Scottish Rite Hospital children. Also the youth are busy collecting toiletry items and decorating for the Buckner Orphan's home for the Christmas season. She also said there will be a lock-in at the lodge the night of January 3, 2004 to the morning of January 4. A visit to Six Flags precedes the get-together on January 3.

Sunshine Lady Sister Wanda Petr sent get well wishes to Brothers George Hanson and Sam Hughes; and to Sisters Lisa Zabojnik and Mildred Podrouzek. Sister Wanda was hospitalized last week. We all wish her well, and we did so at our meeting.

New Year's Eve It is not too early to remind you to plan to dance at Lodge 84 New Year's Eve. Little River Polka Band will furnish the music. More information later.

Lodge 88, Houston annual meeting December 14 The Lodge 88, Houston annual meeting will be on Sunday, December 14. The monthly meeting will start at 10 a.m. and is followed by the annual meeting. This is important as delegates to the Convention next June will be elected at the meeting.

Adella Hughes and Rose Mitchell recently went on a one week Carribean Cruise, leaving from Galveston on the Rhapsody of the Sea. They went to the Florida Keys, toured beautiful Key West, Cozumel and the Cayman Islands where they had an interesting. tour on the glass bottom boat. They had a great time and returned Sunday November 16.

Youth Leader Barbara Linney Gonzales tells me that the youth are staying busy. Their Christmas party will be on Saturday, December 6, starting at 11 a.m. at the lodge. Everyone is invited. Their party last year was really fun so be sure to be there this year.

The youth club is adopting a family for Christmas as they did for Thanksgiving. They provide dinner for the family and toys for the children.

They really stay busy as they also plan to repaint the youth room.

Johnnie Gorka, brother of Mary Roznovsky, passed away recently. He was buried in Rosenberg. Our sympathies goes to Mary and all his family.

We had 32 members and seven guests who stool for the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call of officers by Secretary Alice Jochen revealed the absence of Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Amy Kieschnick and Flag Bearer Chris Schleider.

Secretary Alice Jochen read last month's minutes which were approved as read.

Under correspondence, we had one new member, Collin Merl Young. All officers and committee reports were read.

FAC report stated our goal of 15 applicants has been met, and we will receive additional incentives.

Sick Committee - reported. Robert Boyd was on our sick list. Here's hoping for his speedy recovery.

Visitors were recognized and District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt spoke to our members on various items in our Society. He had a very informative speech.

We were happy to also recognize our two additional visitors, Rosie Malota and Mrs. Wunderlich.

Lodge 130, Dallas member receives collegiate honor Congratulations to Sarah Rebekah Boylan of Plano, Texas who has been accepted for membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) and was honored during a campus ceremony recently at Texas Woman's University.

The NSCS is a highly selective, national, non-profit honors organization. Founded in 1994, NSCS recognizes first and second year undergrad- Rebekah Boylan uate students who excel academically.

The Society was established on the principle that with scholarship comes a responsibility to develop leadership and a duty to perform service.

"NSCS provides the opportunity for students, like Sarah, to be recognized for their outstanding academic accomplishments early in their college experience," said Steve Loflin, NSCS Executive Director. "Sarah will also have the opportunity to join other high achieving college students in developing leadership skills and a sense of civic responsibility."

Sarah is a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas. She was the recipient of a $1 ,000 SPJST Scholarship this year. Sarah is currently a sophomore at Texas Woman's University. She was elected to study in the Dental Hygiene program. Her parents are John and Teresa Boylan and grandparents, Stanley and Martha Vrla of Lodge 130, Dallas, who are all very proud of her!

Officer, Delegate Elections in December In our December meeting, we will have election of officers for 2004 and election of four delegates and four substitute delegates to the convention in Temple in June, 2004. Nominating Committee for December meeting elections is Nelson Jochen, Emil Kutra, and Walter Rosilier.

The capsule prize of $50 went unclaimed due to the absence of Jordan G. Wisnoski, Annie Pavlicek, and Annette T. Strayer. Next month, the prize goes to $60. Come, and you could win. Five cash prizes went to Robert Kieschnick, Rosie Tumis, Jim Owens, Walter Rosilier, and Joe Gambill. Four refreshments prizes went to Sidon Tumis, Nelson Jochen, Rita Hermis, and Dorothy Tumis.

Additional prizes were donated by District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt. Winners were Emil Kutra, who won the Veteran prize, a cap.

Other winners were Garrett Owens, Keith Kieschnick, Pat Schleider, and Marilyn Spivey. Fratemalist of the Year nominated was Robert Kieschnick. Congratulations. Lifetime Achiever awards are to be distributed at the District Five Spring Meeting.

Vice President Evelyn Zajicek called for cake bakers, and they are Mary Kosut, Ora Nell Hassebrock, Margie Anders, Ellen Miculka, Margaret Spahr, Era Richards, Edna Wehring, and Marie Stayton.

The vice president called for kitchen help, but we are not cooking in December. We are having the dinner. catered. Turkey and dressing will be our menu. The officers of the Birthday Club will do the serving.

Circle of Czech Women Krouzek Ceskych Zen report on November meeting Bertha Podhrasky called our meeting to order. Esther Cunningham led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Lillie Galatka, sister of Stanley Patak.

Bertha welcomed 25 members and one guest of Bessie Tydlaska, Joyce Lynn Moore, who later joined. We are glad to see a new member and three men guests. It was good to see Lillian Hamusek and Evelyn Salak who have been unable to come to the meetings.

Our Secretary Faye Wright was here, but she fell and hurt her knee and had to go to her doctor. We hope she is doing better.

Evelyn Cechan will take the minutes and send them to Faye. Evelyn read the letter she sent to the Vestnik, and the minutes were approved as read.

A copy of the treasury report was handed out to the members to read.

Rosie Julius gave the report. A motion was made by Wanda Petr and seconded by Carolyn Nemec that we accept the report as read.

Georgia Brozek called Evelyn and gave her the report of the cards. She sent get well cards to Walter Hosek, Faye Wright, and Eileen Jakubowski.

The reporter asked for news and Esther Cunningham reported she and Bob were just back from Bermuda for wedding of her niece. She said it was a beautiful wedding and she enjoyed the weather. On the way back, she said they stopped at Pensacola, Florida for their 15th year anniversary reunion of Bob's shipmates of the USS Salem.

Bertha Malik, her family and inlaws enjoyed their vacation at Sea Isle City, New Jersey in October.

Bertha reported on the Dallas Sister City meeting. The City of Dallas reorganized the International Company. A representative from the new Company was here and will report how active we are Bertha reported the Skampa String Quartet of the Czech Republic will perform at SMU November 10, 2003 and after the concert, the quartet-

will be hosted by the Chamber Society, Sokol Ziska and Dallas Brno Sister City. We are asking for finger foods for the evening. Everyone is invited to come.

The Culture Society meeting is February 23, 2004. There is no meeting of the partnership committee. The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council meets November 10, 2003 at SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas.

The Christmas dinner was discussed. Bessie asked the members what meat she should serve. The members voted to have roast beef.

Bessie said the menu would be roast beef, parsley potatoes, green beans, salad, roll, and dessert. If you are planning to go, you need to send your money, or call Rosie Julius. She will report to Bessie. Wanda Petr made a motion, and it was seconded by Carolyn Nemec that we charge $10 and put the rest in the treasury for our money-maker. The date is Friday, December 5, 2003 upstairs at 10:30 a.m.. Esther passed out a sheet to help decorate and be at the guest book. The members signed up to help.

Ennis Sewing Circle reportd on November meeting

Our donation of $300 to Sokol for the use of the hall for our meetings.

We also purchased two new tables for our use. A donation was made to the Veteran's Hospital gift shop in memory of Marie Toberney.

Lillie Kosarek gave the treasurer's report. Both were approved as read.

Sunshine Lady Eleanor Pelzel announced our one birthday lady, Martha Ritchey. We all sang "Happy Birthday" to Martha and we really sounded good!

Dorothy Prachyl read a thank you note form Liddie Pavelka for the card and money gift she received when she was in the hospital last month. Liddie is such a sweet person. She returned the money as a gift to the Club.

Christmas gifts were discussed. It was decided that we would spend between $5 and $10 each. No little gifts will be exchanged in December—only Christmas gifts. We also discussed how much we will spend, what we will get our shut-in sisters, and who will purchase and deliver them. It will be the same four people as last year — Eleanora Pelzel, Frances Vinkler, Martha Ritchey, and Georgia Morales.

Our lucky door prize winner was Evelyn Slovak. We will not have a door prize in December. Since there is no meeting in January, Evelyn will bring the door prize in February.

Chances were being sold for our very pretty Christmas quilt. Liddie Pavelka, I bought you your chances with the money you sent for our last quilt that I received too late. Maybe you will be lucky this time.

Rose Mynarcik brought a lovely Thanksgiving arrangement and candle for our food table which made everything look so nice and festive. Thank you, Rose. We were informed that Rose Mynarcik and Libbie Vrla will bring the Christmas table decorations.

I am sure they will be very pretty.

Our lunch was really good.

Dorothy Prachyl led us in prayer before we at our soup and sandwiches.

Eleanor Pelzel brought a pot of blackeyed peas soup; Bertha Podhrasky brought potato soup; and Lillie Kosarek brought taco soup. They were all very good. I wish I had some today. We also had lots of different sandwiches, corn bread, a relish tray, and all the delicious desserts. As usual, I ate too much.

Rosie Bednar was very pleased with her quilt that the faithful quilters quilted. They did a very good job.

Libbie Wisniewski suggested, and it was discussed, that we all bring pictures of our families from way back or from the present to show next month at our December meeting. We will not be quilting so we will have something to look at, talk about, and laugh at.

That was a good idea.

Sidney Bridewell reported her sister, Liddie Pavelka, is doing much better, but is very busy catching up on all the things she had let go while being sick. We hope by December, she will be caught up on everything and can make our meeting. It has been a long time since we have seen you, Liddie. We miss you! We also miss Georgia Tupy. I understand she may try to come for our Christmas lunch. We hope so.

More News Congratulations to Vickie and Jerry Kohn who celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on November 4.

They went out and had a wonderful dinner— just the two of them. How romantic.

On November 1, Dorothy and Louis Kudrna attended the rededication of the Wallachian Bell and Belfry and the dedication of the TCHCC amphitheater in LaGrange, Texas. Performing was the 36-member Dvorana Dance Group from Prague, Czech Republic.

They performed dances from England, Scotland, Ireland, America, Mexico, Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia.

They were very good, and the costumes were so colorful. Dorothy and Louis also toured the Painted Churches while in the Schulenburg area.

On November 10, Bertha and Julius Podhrasky attended the Skampa String Quartet at the SMU Auditorium. It consisted of three boys and one girl.

Bertha said they were absolutely superb. They were hosted at the Dallas Sokol by the Dallas Chamber Music Society, Brno Sister City, and Sokol Dallas. They are very famous and have toured all over the world.

Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek attended a 50th wedding anniversary of a former co-worker of Jerry's at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda. The reception was held at the American Legion Hall in Giddings, Texas. They also attended the Kolache Festival November 9 along with his sister, Loraine and husband, Bob McGowan and daughter, Diann and husband, Mark Rogers. It was her sister, Loraine's, birthday, and she won the first prize—money! Ella Mae had a surprise German chocolate cake for her. It sounds like they had a great time.

Pat Fowler was very excited for the Telico Fire Department. They are receiving a huge grant from the state of Texas to purchase a big tanker fire truck. That is just great.

Mary Krajca was so happy. Her grandson, Wesley Krajca, is home on leave from Iraq. He is home for three weeks then he will be sent to Korea.

We all hope and pray he will stay safe and return home soon.

Worth Friendship Club reports on November meeting Fort

Forty-eight members of the Friendship Club met on Wednesday, November 5, 2003 for their monthly meeting to celebrate Thanksgiving at St. Thomas Parish Hall. Guests were Margaret Laurance, daughter of Louis Oujesky, and Melba Brown, sister of

Merel Kovar. Margaret joined the Club, and everyone is so glad to have you as now Louise will be able to come more often. Welcome!

President Alice Barnes called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Following, Alice read a prayer.

The October minutes were read by Secretary Kathy Ormsbee, and the treasurer's report was given by Linda Horner. Both were accepted as presented.

The singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to November celebrants of Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, and Merel Kovar. May you all have many more.

Annie Whitsel reported that $5 gifts will be exchanged for Christmas. The luncheon was discussed. Anna Marie Moncrief and Nettie Naugle volunteered to prepare the ham which the Club will purchase. Everyone was asked to bring the same dish as they did for Thanksgiving. If you did not have an assigned dish, just bring whatever you desire. President Alice reported that Connie Wisman will sing for us at our luncheon. December hostesses will be Ima Lou LaPlant, Kathy Ormsbee, and Billye Starr.

For a door prize, Louise Oujesky brought a half dozen fresh country eggs which were won by Ann Marie Moncrief. The second door prize was brought by Rose Nieswiadomy, but I am sorry that I do not have the lucky winner's name.

On behalf of the Nominating Committee, Mary Schneider presented their report. Upon motion made, seconded, and passed, the following were elected to serve as officers for the new year— President Alice Barnes; Vice President Rosie Steinman; Secretary Kathy Ormsbee; and Treasurer Linda Horner.

Having a meeting in January 2004 was discussed. It was voted to meet.

The meeting date will be January 7.

President Alice reported 165 items were brought for St. Thomas Food Bank and $43 was received. Being the good shopper Alice is, she called to say she bought 106 cans of corn, 12 jars of jelly, and still has a few dollars left over.

The hostesses Anna Moncrief, Agnes Reznicek and Rose Ann Spann were thanked for all there services. Table decorations were small carved pumpkins by Anna Marie with fresh flowers from her garden. These were given away as door prizes. Aggie looked so cute with her two turkey feathers in her hair. Our turkey chefs were Ella Greer, Ann Conner, and Mary Ann and Joe Kozel. They donated and prepared the two turkeys, plus brought dressing and gravy. While I was unable to be at the meeting, I hear everything was beautiful, and all the food was wonderful.

Thanks go out to Mary Schneider for bringing me a plate which I thoroughly enjoyed. As I always have said, the Friendship Club has the greatest cooks around. Agnes read a Thanksgiving prayer before lunch. Following lunch, games were played. Lydia Alholm brought a set of smoked glasses in a basket for the last game which was won

by President Alice.

News of Members Martha Studer's husband is in the hospital, and our get well wishes go

out to him.

Natalie Maly is now residing in an assisted living home in Lewisville.

We've missed you, Natalie, and hope all is well with you.

Pauline Walker celebrated her 80th birthday with a party in her honor at the Emanuel Building in Azle given by her family. I hear it was a beautiful party and enjoyed by all.

On the same day, Betty Landsfeld celebrated her 80th birthday with a party given by her children at the ETG Waterfalls in Fort Worth. I did attend this party which was a lot of fun.

Several games were played. A barbecue meal was served with strudel followed by Italian Creme birthday cake.

Everything was beautiful. It was so nice to see and visit with Betty's family members from Ennis—some of whom I have not seen in years. Also, it was nice to meet Betty's children who are Steve and Paula Landsfeld, Wesley Landsfeld, Betty and Stanley Krenek, and Helen and Joe Rogers all of Fort Worth, and Ann and Mike Wiedower of Milwaukee.

Lydia Alholm is still on a speaking tour. She recently spoke to the Women's Circle in Colleyville at their 25th annual dinner. She spoke about being in the navy, her school days, and growing up on the farm. She received a standing ovation. She was also interviewed by the NE Section of the Star Telegram.

Willie Mae Becan enjoyed the visit from her son, Jerry of San Antonio who came to attend his class reunion at the University of Dallas. While here, they attended the play, "Over the River and Through the Woods" at Coppell Community Theater where Willie Mae's daughter, Madeleine Myers, played the part of Aida. Willie Mae said it was a very hilarious play and I do agree. I saw this production on Milan/Sokol night at Theater Arlington where Carrie Milan's grandson, B.J. Cleveland had the lead part as Nick.

Willie Mae also entered her plants in the Annual Senior Citizen's Fair and volunteered 12 hours of time. She said her plant vocabulary really jumped up several points. Then she helped her son, Bernard, and his wife, Penny, with an estate sale and was amazed when a lady wanted to purchase the glass door knob from one of the doors. You never know what will interest some folks.

Agnes Reznicek and Anna Marie Moncrief traveled to LaGrange to attend the 70th birthday of Arthur Moncrief at the Country Club, attended the dedication of the Wallachian Bell and Belfry at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, and spent the night with Bernie and Lillian Ripper in Schulenburg. Then they attended mass at the St. Rose Limar Church in Schulenburg, attended the turkey dinner at the High Hill Church where Aggie met several of the Tarok players and visited the cemetery at Hostyn where Ann Marie's grandparents are buried. Sounds like they had a full and busy trip.

Each fall, Irene and Harold Green are treated to a trip by their daughter and husband. This year, they flew into Buffalo along with granddaughter, Stefanie, and great-granddaughter, Avery. they stayed at the new Radisson Hotel with a beautiful view of Niagara Falls. Their first stop was

Maid of the Mist where you go by boat between the two falls - the Bridal Veil Falls (American side) and Horseshoe Falls (Canadian side) then they took the journey behind the falls here tunnels are built into the walls of the falls and you see the water falling in front of you. While there, they visited queen Victoria Park with all the beautiful flowers, rode the Mexican Aero cable care which goes across the whirlpool area, toured the Rossi Glass Company, made a stop at the Skylon Tower, visited the wine country and tasted wine at the Hildebrand Winery.

In Toronto, they visited the Metrodome, Chinatown and Hershey Store for chocolates. Irene said they had a wonderful time in spite of all the problems. They were stopped for a search of their rented van as it had been flagged before, had problems in locating the hotel as apparently Canada has a few street signs, the traffic was pure gridlock, Harold got lost in going to the van in chinatown, and knew they were in trouble at the falls when they were given raincoats. Sure, enough, they got soaked.

Before returning home, the group traveled to upstate New York to visit Oswego State University which Harold attended while he was a GI 60 years ago. Harold's old room and dorm is now used as a storage unit.

Harold has many fond memories of his college days. The last stop was to attend a fall festival in Sterling, New York which was held in an apple orchard. They picked apples right off the trees. Certainly sounds like they had a fun and wonderful trip.

The next meeting is December 3.

The SPJST's annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive commenced October 1 and is now in full swing.

This year's goal is to collect $16,000.

Donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of the amount contributed is applied toward scholarships.

Acknowledgement of individual donations will be published in the Vestnik.

SPJST general scholarships were established in 1982 for SPJST members. General scholarships are funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by members and friends of the Society. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Thank you for your generous support.

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy The Resolution Committee of SPJST 6, Cottonwood, on behalf of all its members, which to express our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of our departed sister, MARTHA MONTHEI, age 80 of West who passed away Thursday night, November 6, 2003 in West Rest Haven. Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday in Salem Lutheran Church in Malone with Reverend James Heiser, officiating.

Burial followed in Salem Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday, November 8 at Kotch Funeral Home.

Mrs. Monthei was born January 30, 1923 at West and had lived in the West/Abbott area all of her life. She graduated from St. Mary's School in West. She married Fred Monthei December 22, 1946 and he preceded her in death May 16, 1991.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Malone, SPJST 6 Cottonwood. Mrs Monthei was employed at Kolacek's Kolace Kitchen for several years and enjoyed cooking at Cottonwood Hall and for weddings and funeral dinners.

Mrs. Monthei is survived by a daughter, Rose Mynar of Abbott; sister, Mary Vrana of West; brother, Walter F. (Laddie) Sternadel of Oregon; grandchildren, Tammie Nors and husband, David, Melissa Hutyra and husband, Bill and Marvin Mynar, Jr.; great-grandchildren; Brandon Nors, Danielle Nors and Nicole Hutyra; and several nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers were David Nors, Bill Hutyra, Jerry Maynard, Bennie Mynar, Billy Veselka, and Donnie Veselka.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Parish Center in West; or to the West Volunteer Ambulance Association.

She was a great neighbor to every one. She loved watching football and baseball.

Anna was a member of the Taylor We, the undersigned Resolution Brethren Church and never missed Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, attending. She also was a member of Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our SPJST and the Taylor Brethren entire membership, wish to express our Christian Sisters.

In Memory of George Kulcak Funeral mass for George Joe Kulcak, 77, of Needville was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 15, 2003 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Needville. The Reverend James Ramsey officiated the services.

Visitation was from 5 to 9 p.m.

George was born January 24, 1926 in Needville to Joe F. Kulcak and Annie Kolenovsky Kulcak. He passed away November 11 in Brazoria County. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Needville and the Knights of Columbus, KJT, American Legion, and SPJST Lodge 81, Needville.

George is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Annie Kulcak; and sisters, Rosie Kulcak Bacak, and Alice Kulcak Svoboda.

He is survived by his loving wife, Florine Urbanek Kulcak of Needville; daughter, Elizabeth Vacek and husband, August of East Bernard; sister, Jo Ann Hlozek of Houston; grandchildren, Jennifer Guthman and husband, Jon of Orchard, Scott Vacek, Penny Vacek, and Tammy Vacek, all of East Bernard; great-grandchild, Jacob Guthman; several nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many friends.

Funeral services for Clara Adrienne (Hill) Fojt, 86, of Somerville, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 2, 2003 at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville with Reverend Henry Beseda officiating. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery in Washington County. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Fojt died Saturday, September 27, 2003 in Burleson/St. Joseph Manor in Caldwell.

Wednesday, December 3, 2003—VESTNIK/13 She was born February 22, 1917 in Brenham to Ruben and Simmie Wade Hill. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Brenham. She was married to Edward Albert Fojt in 1949.

Mrs. Fojt was preceded in death by husband, Edward, in 1984; parents; and three brothers.

Mrs. Fojt was a homemaker. She loved taking care of her grandchildren and gardening.

Survivors include son, Edward Fojt and wife, Rhonda of Snook; three grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were scheduled to be Mike Fojt, Brian Fojt, Jackie Bauman, Ray Janner, Donnie McCarty, Frank Svrcek, Gene Zwernemann, Bennie Ray Sebesta, and Arnold Grunwald.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed sister, LILLIAN SHAW, of Waco, Texas who died Saturday, October 18, 2003 at the age of 86.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 22 at 10 a.m. at Waco Memorial Chapel.

Sister Lillian was born in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. She was the former owner of the first pet shop in Waco known as La Petit Shoppe.

Sister Lillian became an SPJST member in August 1965.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clair Rinehart; son, James Rinehart, and son in-law, Ed Havlik.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Shaw; children, Irene Havlik, Claire Mathis and husband, Kenneth, Cathy Rinehart, Robert Shaw and wife, Dixie, and Janice Chandler and husband, Carl; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; and many friends and relatives. She will be missed by all.

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, RUDOLF MATULA, of Penelope, Texas who died Thursday, October 30, 2003 at the age of 87.

Rosary was recited Monday, November 3 at the Church of the Nativity, B.V.M. in Penelope. Mass of Christian Burial followed with the Reverend Bruno Mikolajczyk as celebrant.

Brother Rudolf was born in Waukomis, Oklahoma to John and Catherine (Kraemer) Matula on December 29, 1915. He attended St. Mary's School in West and entered the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was a farmer for most of his life before retiring in 1990. He married Ruby Pribyla in 1962 in Penelope. He was a member of the Church of the Nativity, VFW Post 4819 and an SPJST member since August 1970.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Ruby Matula of Penelope; son, Danny Matula, and wife, Cathy of West; sister, Bessie Rejcek of West; granddaughter, Daniella Matula; stepgranddaughter, Bonnie Dixon and husband, Matt; great-grandson, Haden Dixon; brother in-law, Peter Gallia of Penelope; sister in-law, Dorothy Matula of Penelope; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In Memory of Viola Cabla Viola Chaloupka Cabla, 87, a lifelong resident of Sinton, Texas, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2003 in a Houston area hospital. She was born September 24, 1916 in Sweet Home, Texas in Lavaca County to William Chaloupka and Josephine Berkovsky Chaloupka.

She is survived by sons, Richard Cabla of Sugar Land, Texas, and Ladis Cabla, Jr. of Houston, Texas; daughters, Geraldine Shanahan of New Braunfels, Texas, and Catherine Brown of Sherman Oaks, California; sisters, Ruby Schroeder of Houston, Texas, Estelle Machart of Yoakum, Texas; and seven grandchildren.

Mrs. Cabla was an SPJST sales rep in the Corpus Christi area and was a member of the SPJST Lodge 137, Taft.

She was laid to rest at Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Sweet Home, Texas.

The real miracle of Christmas can be found in the legend of the candy cane: Legend of the Candy Cane

There once was a candymaker who wanted to remind us of the love God has for us and the price He paid for our salvation. He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. This symbolizes Jesus's virgin birth, and that he is the "Rock of Ages". It was shaped in the form of a "J" for Jesus or to resemble a shepherd's staff to remind us that Jesus is our Good Shepherd. The bold,

red stripe was added to have us remember the blood Christ shed as payment for our sins.

Hopefully, when you see a candy cane, it will help you to witness the miracle of God's Gift at this blessed time of year!

Lodge 13, Dime Box reports on November meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The November meeting of SPJST Lodge 13, Dime Box, was held in the SPJST hall on Sunday, November 23 at 1 p.m. Alicia Ford called the meeting to order. Kameron Schumann led the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read. There were 18 members and five adults present.

The charity for November was to bring canned food and eyeglasses.

December's charity is to bring items for Operation Valentine, items which will be sent to our soldiers who are serving in the Middle East. The donations will arrive around Valentine's Day, 2004. All members were handed a lists of items you can send.

All members who participated in the District One Fall Fun Day were given their three dollar entry reward.

Anyone who still wants to donate can give the money to Dawn and in December Mrs. Sharon will send in the check. Thanks to everyone who

participated in the pizza and cookie dough fun drive. Our top sellers were Jessica Schumann with 29 sells; and Jeffrey Pinkard and John Russell with 28 sells. The top sellers received certificates. Congratulations to Dale Korth for winning second place on the essay contest at the Texas Fraternal Congress.

Mrs. Sharon thanked everyone who participated in the Make A Difference Day. The youth cleaned the recycling center, fire station, and community center. Mr. Keith Schumann, a member of the volunteer fire department came to hall to personally thank all who helped tidy up the place.

Coming Events We were reminded that our membership quota for this year is 10, and we only need two more new members to reach our goal. Reminder: when you do your Vestnik projects or when you send in letters, please write your first and last name. Camp Tee-shirt Design Contest begins, and the theme is "Discover a Treasure—SPJST Youth.". Entries are due by January 30, 2004. All Scholarship applications are due by February 1, 2004.

The SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House is December 1, 2003. It begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Temple parade. Sharon has a full agenda if anyone is interested in going. SPJST is collecting soda pop tops. Let's see how many we can collect by Join Hands Day next May, 2004.

Dime Box's annual Country Christmas will be December 6. We will be participating in the parade. It starts at 6 p.m. All members need to wear red.

16/VESTNIK —Wednesday, December 3, 2003 The next meeting will be held on Monday, December 22 at 6 p.m. in the SPJST hall. During this time, we will have our annual Christmas party with pizza. Girls bring girls' gifts, and boys bring boys' gifts. The price range is $5 to $7.

Kristy Schumann moved to adjourned the meeting, and Dawn Rackel seconded the motion. The members then went to put Christmas lights on seniors' homes.

Lodge 24, Cyclone invites members, parents and grandparents to Christmas party Dear Readers, We had our youth club meeting on November 15 right before the lock-in.

Most of us stayed for the lock-in. We had games, movies, pizza. a hayride and drew cartoons. I fell asleep around 2 a.m. but I know that lots of the kids stayed up all night.

Our next meeting is on December 13 at 4 p.m. before the Christmas party at Flag Hall. We have a short program at 5 p.m. Please invite all of your parents and grandparents to come, too!

If you haven't already brought canned goods for the Lacks Trim-aTree project please do that. Also, make a point to go and see the tree. Thanks to everybody who helped put on the decorations.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club reports on November meeting The November 9, 2003 meeting of SPJST Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club was called to order at 10:40 a.m. by President Kirby Bubela. Jessica Fucik led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Youth Club Motto and prayer.

The register was read. Guests were Tatiana Lucas. The minutes were read and approved.

Kenna Bubela gave the treasurer's report. Kenna Bubela also gave the due's report.

The charity project for this month was to bring old eyeglasses for the Jeepers Creepers program.

Coming Events Youth Leader Lisa Bubela reported that the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarships Fund Drive will be conducted by our lodge in January, 2004, and all high school seniors are encouraged to apply for the SPJST scholarships. The forms are available from Mrs. Bubela and are due on February 1, 2004. Members were reminded that the SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House is on December 1, 2003, and to begin work on their camp tee-shirt designs which are due on January 30, 2004 with the theme being Discover a Treasure—SPJST Youth. It was noted that Operation Valentine is a statewide project that the SPJST Youth Department is conducting. Members can collect items to send to the soldiers around Valentine's Day, 2004. Lodge 30 members can bring the items to the December meeting. The following dates were given to the members: February 28 - 29, 2004—SPJST Awards Banquet and Youth Leaders Workshop, June 4 - 6, 2004—Leaders in Training Workshop, June 14, 2004 —SPJST Convention, and August 7, 2004 — State Youth Achievement

The Christmas social is being held in conjunction with the Lodge 30 adult meeting.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club Christmas party December 7 The Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club meeting was called to order on Sunday, November 9, 2003 by our President Ashley Sczech. Nicole Laitkep led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Present were eight members and two adults.

The youth club would like to thank everyone who brought canned goods to the meeting. These will help a lot of families.

For the December meeting, we will be having a prize drawing and anyone who would like to bring an item is welcome to. All money raised will be used to buy supplies for Operation Valentine. After our meeting, we enjoyed making hands and feet turkeys.

Our next meeting will be December 7 at 11 a.m. in Hillje followed by the lodge Christmas party.

Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club member lauded by Governor Although Travis Ryan Purchis is just 11 years old, he's caught the eye of the governor of Texas.

That's because Travis, the son of Connie Jo Purchis of Floresville and the grandson of Lea and Clarence Popham of Fairview, wrote an impressive essay for a SPJST Lodge 117 essay contest that was so good, it was routed to Governor Rick Perry.

It wasn't long afterward the sixth grader received a special certificate from the governor, acknowledging Travis' patriotic pride.

Travis' essay entitled "Patriotism Is," follows.

Patriotism Is Patriotism to me means loyalty to America and to the flag of the United States of America. I show my support to America by supporting the many decisions that the President makes. I trust the President because he is a patriot to America. Many brave souls have fought in wars and gave their lives for their country, and this showed their patriotism. I want to know if you are a patriot to America. If you are, you are a person who supports and stands beside America. The way America treats its people is what makes America respected. This is another thing that makes me proud to be a patriot to America. I am a patriot to America due to many things. God Bless America.
