Ever read the funny papers? You know the ones I'm talking about: The tabloids that are sold at the head of the checkout line at the supermarket? At their best, they're good for a few laughs.

At their worst, they're misleading — a great example of how you can't believe everything that you read, hear or see.

This weekend, I heard over the radio the tale of yet another telemarketing fraud calculated to grab your attention, emotions and hard-earned money. In this case, people received phone calls saying that they had won money — but receiving the prize was dependent on sending the tax owing to claim the prize.

There are so many variations on this theme! Many of us, I am sure, have received calls saying that we've won a free gift – but that our prize is dependent on agreeing to sales demonstration.

Salespeople sometimes use the "free gift," "special offer" or "you've just won" telephone calls to get into your home to sell you something — or worse — to rob you.

Education is a key tool in preventing consumer injury from scams of all kinds.

The Federal Trade Commission maintains an excellent website that addresses consumer fraud. If you have Internet access, check it out at http:// www.ftc.gov/bcp/menu-tmark.htm . I'm especially fond of the section entitled "Catch the Bandit in Your Mailbox."

While most of the solicitations that are sent through the mail are for legitimate products, services and charities, others definitely are not. They're scams sent by bandits to capitalize on your financial needs, optimism — or everyone's fantasy of hitting the jackpot.

How can you tell the difference between an offer from a legitimate organization and one from an outfit that's just out to steal your money? It's no easy task. Sham solicitations are slick looking, skillfully written, and can be very convincing. But according to the Federal Trade Commission, most mailbox scams are just variations on the same themes: promises of easy money or easy credit or guarantees that you're a winner of a fabulous or valuable prize.

A Toss any solicitation that asks for payment for a "free" gift. If it's free or a gift, you shouldn't have to pay. Free is free.

A. Toss any solicitation that doesn't clearly identify the company and its street address and phone number. Pay particular attention if you are directed to call a toll-free number for more information about a product or service. Often, when you dial a toll-free number in response to a bogus solicitation, you are secretly connected by a telemarketer or sales agent to a payper-call 900 number. In that case, you are paying to listen to a sales pitch for a product, service, prize, contest, or sweepstakes.

A Toss any solicitation that looks like a government document and suggests contest winnings or unclaimed assets are yours for a small fee. The government doesn't solicit money from citi zens.

A. Toss any solicitation for a "prepaid" or "special" deal with a nominal monthly "processing fee." You'll save yourself years of monthly payments for products or services you no longer want or could pay less for elsewhere. ♦ Toss any solicitation that asks for your bank account or credit card account number. If you're tempted to send any money for a product or service that's being touted through the mail — and it's a company you've never heard of -- take your time.

Check out the company — or the offer — with the Texas Attorney General (800) 252-8011 or Better Business Bureau in the state where the company or organization is located. This is not foolproof, though.

There may be no record of complaints if a company is too new or if it has changed its name. Watch out for unsolicited checks that, when cashed, sign you up for products or services you may not want or need.

Zachary Kramer named District Two State Field Representative Zachary Kramer has been selected as the new State Field Representative in District Two. A member of Lodge 221, Harker Heights, Zachary is a native of Missouri and a graduate of Baylor University with a BBA in Information Systems.

While at Baylor, Zachary met his future wife, Lori A. Stubbs. They later moved to College Station where Zachary worked for Knowledge Based Systems, Inc., as a business analyst, on an Air Force research project. Lori attended Texas A&M Medical School.

Zachary's hobbies include trout fishing, walking/jogging, golf, canoeing, grilling out with friends and family, and playing Frisbee with his dog, Bailey, a four year old Australian Shepherd.

Proceeds to benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation

New SPJST cookbook to arrive just in time for Christimas giving Texas Recipes represents a compilation of favorite recipes from SPJST members from around the state. The first edition of the book arrives at the SPJST Home Office next week.

"The response to our request for recipes was overwhelming," says Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, who coordinated the project. "We received hundreds of recipes and narrowed them down to the 950 or so that appear in the book." The range of recipes includes simple, quick and easy dishes as well as traditional Czech specialties.

"Without a doubt, it's a winner," she says. "It's the perfect complement to The SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook published in 1997." To date, more than 26,000 copies of the anniversary cookbook have been sold.

Copies of Texas Recipes are available through the SPJST Home Office for $11 per book. The price includes postage and handling. Volume discounts on purchases of 10 or more books are available to local lodges and youth clubs.

Proceeds Benefit Charity Proceeds from the sale of Texas Recipes will go to benefit the Make-AWish Foundation® of Central and South Texas. Since 1980, the Make-AWish Foundation has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The organization was founded in 1980 after a little boy named Chris Greicius realized his heartfelt wish to become a police officer. Since its humble beginnings, the organization has

Sweet Potato Casserole Olga Patak Lodge 84, Dallas 4 c. mashed sweet potatoes 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 2 eggs 1/2 c. milk 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 c. melted margarine 1/2 c. brown sugar - packed 1/2 c. flour 1 c. chopped pecans Combine first six ingredients with margarine, pour into buttered casserole dish. Combine brown sugar, pecans, flour with 3 tbsp. margarine. Crumble mixture on top.

Bake 350 degrees (uncovered) 35 minutes.

Before Cornbread Dressing Day

Bake 5 cans (5 for $1) biscuits. Cook 2 large packages chicken gizzards in water with chopped onion and chopped celery until tender—maybe 45 minutes.

Simmer. Chop or cut gizzards removing gristle. Store in broth in refrigerator overnight. Cook chicken necks and backs for 45 minutes or longer with celery and onion for extra broth for dressing and gravy. De-bone and store (Continued on page five.)

My maternal grandfather, Joseph Cuba, came from Vsetin, Moravia and my paternal grandparents, Henry and Adelia Sladek, came from Slovakia in the 1800s. They are long gone, but the memories linger on.

Crumble cornbread and biscuits. Store in plastic bags overnight.

Saute celery and onions in oleo until transparent or soft. Soak cornbread, and biscuits in chicken broth. Work with hands to cornbread and biscuits are not lumpy. Make consistency of cake batter, but not runny. Add salt and pepper, tasting for salt, as you already have salt in cornbread, biscuits, and broth. Add more salt if necessary. Add eggs last, and mix well.

Spray 2 - 9 x 13 pans liberally with Pam. Pour dressing into pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

Giblet Gravy Earlene Ripple Mel Lodge 186, Caldwell

Mix 3/4 c. flour in 1 - 2 c. water.

Bring broth to a boil. Mix well with whisk, so lumps dissolve. Slowly pour flour mixture into boiling broth stirring constantly. Simmer 10 minutes. Add gizzards, and simmer 10 minutes. Add salt and pepper if necessary. Add more flour and water if gravy is not thick enough.

4 c. milk 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 c. tapioca 1 can condensed milk 1 can Poppy Seed Solo Filling dash of salt 1 tbsp. vanilla Combine milk, eggs, and sugar. Add tapioca, cook till thick. Take off burner, add condensed milk, poppy seeds, salt, and vanilla. Stir well, cool. Then pour into 2 baked pie shells. Cool and refrigerate. Serve.

Traditional Pumpkin Pie Clint Gold Lodge 30, Talton

1 (15 oz.) can pumpkin - about 2 c.

1 (14 oz.) can original, low fat or fat free Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk - not evaporated milk 2 eggs or 4 egg whites 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. salt 1 (9-inch) frozen unbaked pastry shell, thawed Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Combine al all ingredients except pasty shell in large mixing bowl, mix well. Pour into pastry shell. Bake 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees, and bake 35 to 40 minutes longer or until knife inserted 1 inch from edge comes out clean.

Cool, top with whipped cream, if desired. Refrigerate leftovers.

Lodge 15, Buckholts reports on October meeting The October meeting was uneventful. The new main topic of discussion continued to be the necessary repair to the hall.

We missed our regulars like Clara and Johnnie Balusek, Sidonia Svoboda, and Kathleen Jurca. The death of member, June Harwell in September was reported and for whom a moment of silence was observed.

The sick list continued with Clara Balusek, suffering reoccurring nose bleeding; Sidonia Svoboda was hospitalized overnight; and Adolph Gresak is recovering from surgery. I, too, was laid low with diverticulitis. As I turned the corner toward recovery, I received a call from a mortuary in Belton that I wanted to discuss a pre-paid funeral plan. I was aghast, as I had made no such request. The man admitted he had me confused with someone else. that wasn't exactly my idea of a get well message. I didn't get mad or sad, I just flat laughed. The idea of having

my funeral in Belton is flat ridiculous since I never lived there and only know a handful of people there.

When a new barbecue place opened at Pettibone, I naturally had to investigate it. The people there were a friendly bunch, and the cashier struck up an instant conversation with me. Before we knew it, we shared natural kinfolk or as we say, "peach orchard kinfolk."

That proved what Jim Allison once said that two Bohemians will meet, talk, 15 minutes and find out they are kinfolks. He was right on the money.

Pesky Ants!

After the first rain this fall, the fire ants came out like crazy so wouldn't you like to hear of a remedy how to get rid of them easily! Just take about a gallon of water and add about two or three squirts of the dish washing liquid called blue Dawn. It comes in other colors, but it has to be blue to work on fire ants. Stir well, and saturate the mound with it. I tried it so I know it worked especially where the ants made a mound on top of the ground.

I can't take credit for this for it was passed on to me by a former Buckholts native, Lillie Mae Zeigler, formerly Sheppard, of Houston. I know and have used another remedy that was also effective. I was told it might be illegal to use, while the blue Dawn is legal, safe, and inexpensive, unlike the granules that make me sicker than the ants.

Due to the time change, the next meeting will be at 6 p.m. on November 10. We hope to have a good turnout, and I am not only looking forward to the meeting, but to what Virginia will cook for us.

66, Waco reports on October meeting Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President George Pauling on October 19, 2003 at Linden Hall, Elm Mott at 2:30 p.m. with all officers present.

There were 19 members present today.

President Pauling had members stand for a moment of silent prayer for members deceased, Arnold E. Houston and Donna Culliton. May they rest in peace.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the September 21 meeting, and they were approved as read. Sister Dana also read a letter from State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Gladys Yates listing the state tournaments for 2004. The State Taroky Tournament is on February 7 at Lodge 48, Beyersville; the State Straight Domino Tournament on March 6 at Lodge 66 Elm Mott; State Barbecue Tournament on March 12 and 13 at Taylor; the State 42 Domino Tournament on March 27 at Lodge 17 New Tabor; State Golf Tournament on October 9 at Sammons Golf Park; and the State Horseshoe Tournament is on May 15 at Temple Lions Park. Sister Dana also read a letter of Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar about the annual awards banquet which will be held in February. They need updates on addresses of members.

Sister Dana also reported that she received a newsletter from the Ronald McDonald House, and she also received the Fraternalist of the Year form from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. The form has to be in to the SPJST Home Office by December 19. Sister Dana also received a letter from Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas about the number of delegates that Lodge 66 will be allowed at the Convention on June 14 - 16, 2004.

Lodge 66 will be allowed eight delegates and eight alternates.

Due to the absence of Chairman of the Board Milan Dujka, President Pauling had Secretary of the Board LaNell Brem read the minutes of the October 19 meeting. She reported that 3DC will furnish the music at the New Year's Eve dance this year.

President Pauling reported that the defibrillator is here and will be presented to the County Commissioners Court on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. Three lodges have split the cost of the defibrillator. They are Lodge 66, Lodge 35, and Lodge 6.

FAC Report Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Alice Langlotz read her monthly letter from State FAC Gladys Yates.

Sister Gladys reminded members to please turn in their fraternal hours to Mary Alice. Sister Gladys also said that she had a team of walkers in the Walk in Light the Night. She reminded everyone of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive that began on October 1 and ends on March 31, 2004.

They accept memorials and donations to the Scholarship Fund all year around.

Sister Mary Alice reminded members of the District Three Fall Meeting which will be held at Lodge 154, Fort Worth on October 26. She also thanked Diana and John Engelke for participating in the Golf Tournament.

Entertainment Report Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Michael Galler reported that today they are preparing hamburgers with all the trimmings. Members were asked to bring desserts. For the November 16 meeting, the committee will furnish sandwiches, and the members are asked to bring desserts.

Chairman of the Cheer and Condolence Committee Emma Ceska reported that she sent sympathy cards to family of Tim Culliton, Natalie, Nick, and Kimberly on the death of their wife and mother, Donna Culliton; to Eugene and Dorothy Gerlich on the death of their daughter, Donna Culliton; and to Kay and Tom Weeks, Katie, Gena, and Tommy on the death of sister and aunt, Donna Culliton; and to Henry and Barbara Veselka on the death of their grandson, Bo Blancett. Get well cards were sent to Dana McAdams, Sue Pauling, Debbie Galler, and Gladys Yates.

Youth Leader's Report Youth Leader Debbie Galler gave the youth report. There were three youth, two adults, and one visitor, Kaithlyn Browder, at today's meeting.

The youth discussed the Christmas program. The youth will go to Mr. Gatti's for their party. I am not sure of the date yet. They collected Halloween candy to take to the Moody Nursing Home.

The youth will participate in the Christmas Ornament Contest at the District Three Meeting in Fort Worth.

They will also take part in the Halloween Costume Contest as well.

They are collecting old glasses for October. Sister Debbie also reminded the youth of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and the Camp Tee-Shirt Contest for 2004. This needs to be in November 1. Today, the game was brought by Chris Johnson. Sister Debbie thanked everyone for all the cards and phone calls she received during her illness.

Louie Veselka brought up to the floor about needing workers at the Christmas party in the bar. Volunteers are Louie Veselka, John Engelke, Diana Engelke, Darlene Engelke, Mary Alice Langlotz, Paul Neslony, Dana McAdams, George Pauling, Milan Dujka, Janie Dujka, Butchie Dujka, Michael Galler, and Dorothy Veselka.

President Pauling reported that the Fraternalist of. the Year, officers, Entertainment Committee, and Board of Directors. Delegates will be elected at the November 16 meeting.

Members present celebrating October birthdays were Debbie Galler, Douglas Galler, Kevin Galler, Jodie McAdams, and Jamie Yates.

The adult door prize winner was Jamie Yates. Fifty-fifty winner was Dorothy Veselka, and she donated her winnings to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund.

Next Meeting November 16 The next Board of Directors and Entertainment Committee meeting will be held on November 16 at 1:30 p.m. with the regular meeting beginning at 2:30 p.m.

81, Needville reports on October meeting Lodge

Dear Members, On October 19, 2003, the SPJST Lodge 81 of Needville met for its monthly social and meeting. At 12 p.m., a prayer of thanks was given, and everyone enjoyed a potluck meal with a variety of meats, side dishes, and desserts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready in the kitchen. A big thanks goes to everyone else who brought all of the different dishes and desserts. Everything was delicious!

At 1 p.m., President Vincent Newman opened the meeting.

Everyone followed Vincent Newman in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call. Added to our sick list are Hermina Foytik and Jeanette Barnes. We're all wishing you a speedy recovery.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report. There were no corrections so they were approved as read.

Next, Treasurer Benita Walzel read her report. They were also approved as read. Then, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel read his report. It was also approved as read.

There was no old business to report, so we moved on to new business.

President Vincent Newman read a letter from State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Gladys Yates. It's always nice to hear from her. We also voted in new member, Shane Rust. We hope to see you soon.

Lodge Improvements Under other business, Gilbert Walzel announced that he installed the new security lights. Thanks, Gilbert!

He also announced that his, wife, Benita took the time to wax the hall floor. It looks really nice. Thanks, Benita! Next, we were reminded that at our next meeting, it will be election time. So, if there's anyone you wish to vote in as one of the officers, please plan to attend.

Since we had no more business to discuss, it was time to give out our door prizes. Lucky winners for this month were Rosalie Pieper, Harry Teykl, Leah Stamman, and Benita Walzel. Congratulations to these winners!

Next Meeting November 16 For our next meeting on November 16, it was decided to have turkey and dressing. Benita Walzel and Winifred Susan volunteered to bake the turkeys, and Willie Mae Kuykendall agreed to make the dressing. Thanks, ladies!

88, Houston reports on October meeting Lodge

President Patricia Bruce opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Calvin Orsag gave our invocation and President Bruce led in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Flo Orsag read the names of the deceased members who were Gladys Peklo, Ethelyn Hill, Louise Kadlecek, and Allyne Adams. A moment of silence was held in their memory. She then read the roll call of officers. All officers were present with the exception of Viola Cox and Roberta Johnson. The secretary then read the minutes of the September meeting which had one correction and were then approved.

Secretary/Treasurer Roberta Johnson was not present, therefore Clara Broz read her report.

The secretary then read a thank you note from the family of Allyne Adams for the spray of flowers sent to her funeral. She then read a letter from State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Gladys Yates telling us of the State Tournaments for 2004. First Vice President and FAC Chairman Dorothy Pflughaupt thanked all who brought items to be sent to our troops over seas. Thanks, too, for the cash which will be used to mail these packages. She also reported on various meetings and dates which are available in the office if you are interested.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales reported that the youth participated in the Heights Festival parade on Sunday, October 3. A float was brought from Temple and placed second in the parade. The youth went to the Lexington nursing home on September 4. They also asked that we bring our children and grandchildren to the Halloween party on October 18.

District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Gonzales introduces District Five's youth Royalty Court — all members of Lodge 88, Houston. They are King Brian Graska, Queen Stephanie Boyce and Duchess Chelsea Boyce.

As in past years, members of the Youth Club took an active part in this year's celebration with their annual homemade ice cream sale.

Reports of Committees Entertainment Committee Chairman Betty Theiss reported on upcoming dances and invited everyone to attend.

Social Night Committee Chairman J.R. Bruce was not with us but Sherry Miller reported that bingo is doing fine.

There will be no bingo on Thanksgiving day.

Chairman of the Board Cleburn Lincke was with us but John Broz reported for him. They have had two more bids on the canopy repair. Also the youth want to paint the youth room.

Audit Committee Marceil Malak reported that the books for July and August have been audited and she requested that they be accepted.

Blue Room and Worker's Party Chairman Carol Liebscher reported that the worker's party was really nice and the blue room tickets will go on sale November 4 through December 9.

Kitchen Chairman Dennis Roeder is looking for volunteers for Czech Day. Birthday Day Club President Marie Stayton reported that they will have a pastry booth and a silent auction from 11 a.m. till 4 p.m. on Czech Day. If you have any questions, check with Chairman Margie Anders.

Men's Club Chairman A.J. Stayton reported that the Men's Club is working hard at the lodge cutting grass, etc.

He also reported on the sick members.

President Bruce asked for nominations from the floor to be on the screening committee to check the books for those members who are eligible to go to the convention in 2004. They were Calvin Orsag, Ruth Martinak, and Marceil Malak.

Rules and Regulations Committee Lynn Pflughaupt reported that all rules and regulation changes should be turned in tonight.

Choral Club Chairman Fred Buri reported that there will be a practice for Czech Day on October 15.

District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt reported on various things from the Home Office.

Reading of names of applicants and transfers was given by Secretary Flo Orsag. There was one transfer from

Lodge 88, Houston member pays tribute to veterans Dear Members, In talking with one of our members here at Lodge 88 and with Veterans Day upon us, I thought his story was of interest of how he became a Veteran. Here, brothers and sisters is his story:

Charles R. Veit Charles volunteered to serve in the United States Army on May 30, 1945. "I was picked up at the farm in Shiner, Texas when I was 17 years old," he says. "I was taken to Fort Sam Houston and then on to Fort McKellen, Alabama where I trained for 16 weeks."

He continues, "After completing my training, I was shipped to San Diego, California. Then to Tokyo, Japan. We were in a bad, bad storm and the ship almost turned over. Once in Japan, I joined the paratroopers and also took glider training. We were in a glider crash, but we landed in a rice paddy field.

I made 16 jumps in the paratroopers. On the sixth jump, my chute did not open all the way. I hit the runway hard and busted both my legs. They wanted to amputate my right leg, but I refused. My legs are now giving me a lot of trouble. I was in the hospital two and one half months. I was discharged October 30; 1946. I was going home. Home."

"I was proud to serve my country.

It was quite an experience. I was impressed with the feeling of love of country and duty to this nation we call America. I have heard pride in the praise reflected in so many of our beloved Veterans who gave so much and some who gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we may worship and talk with freedom."

So please, when you see a veteran, talk to him. More importantly, shake his hand or give him or her a hug. Only God knows where we would be without them. May we never forget November 11. Teach our young people what they have done for us all. May our beloved flag always wave over the land of the free and of the brave.

New Business—Carol Leibshure read a letter to nominate King Hegwood for Fraternalist of the Year.

A motion was made and seconded that the Fraternalist of the Year by acclamation. Motion carried.

Guide Josephine Pflughaupt reported that we had 83 members present and one guest who was Bette Townsend.

She read the names of birthdays, and we sang, "Happy Birthday."

Anniversaries celebrated were Mary and Victor Stanek, Kim and Dennis Stanek, and Julie and Jimmy Anders.

Those furnishing beverages after the meeting were Victor and Mary Stanek in honor of their anniversary; Carolyn Filipp in honor of her birthday; and Earline Hoffman and Florian Demny in honor of Earline's birthday. Door prizes of $5 each went to Bess Treybig,

Linda Wehring, Benny Kocich, Hilbert Pechacek, and Bill Malak.

Our next meeting was scheduled for November 10.

Peanut Brittle Champion Roxanne Bertrand of Lodge 107, Floresville accepts 'the first place trophy for best peanut brittle from Steve Smith, Chairman of the Lion's Club Peanut Brittle Contest held October 11 in Floresville.

Sister Bertrand, who used her grandmother's recipe for the brittle, is the daughter of District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer. She also serves as secretary of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum Board of Directors.

Pasadena plans Christmas celebration December 14 The meeting of Lodge 172, Pasadena stated at 2 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. We paused for departed members. We adjourned for 45 minutes for the covered dish meal.

In Memory of Virgil Mikeska

Expression of Sympathy

Virgil Mikeska, age 66, of San Angelo, died Saturday, September 27, 2003, after a lengthy illness. Service was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 30 at Johnson's Funeral Home. Burial followed in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Officiants were the Reverend Tommy Tallas and the Reverend Ray Knowles.

Virgil was born on May 24, 1937 in San Angelo to Albert and Julie Mikeska.

He was preceded in death by daughter, Laurie Jean; parents, Albert and Julie Mikeska; and godchild, Shirley Dusek.

He is survived by his wife, Laverne; son, Terry and wife, Kim Mikeska; daughter, Rebekah and husband, Steve Ocker; brother, Harold Mikeska and wife, Verbalee, all of San Angelo; precious grandchildren, Chelsea, Stephen, and Makenzie Ocker, and Chandler Mikeska; as well as a host of loving relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were nephews, Brent Mikeska, Darwin Dusek, Douglas Dusek, Wayne Dusek, Harvey Havlak, and James Maher.

We the undersigned officers of Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station, on behalf of all its members, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the surviving family of our departed brother, FRED BLAZEK, a former president of our lodge, and a recipient of a Lifetime Achiever Award, who passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at the Sherwood Health Care in Bryan, Texas at 88 years of age. Services were held at the Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan, Texas, and he was buried in the Bryan City Cemetery. The Reverend Keith Petteway of Shiloh Baptist Church in Robertson County where Mr. Blazek was a member conducted the service.

Mr. Blazek was born in the Edge community. He was a lifelong resident of Edge and Bryan. He was an automobile mechanic at Allen Olds/Cadillac until his retirement. He was also an ardent gardener at his home in Edge. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II. He was a member of the El Graham American Legion Post 159 in Bryan.

He is survived by his wife, Vera; and son, Gary, in Bryan.

For those desiring, memorial donations may be made to the Shiloh Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Helen Perkins, P.O. Box 66, Wheelock, Texas 77882.

He will be missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Youth Letters Section District One Youth Club members participate in district fall meeting contests On Sunday, October 19, 2003, District One SPJST held its annual Fall Fun Day at Lodge 17, New Tabor.

Approximately 100 youth and adults attended this activity. Forty youth from Lodges 9, 13, 17, 39 and 186 competed in the Christmas Ornament Contest. We had five adult pastry entries and one needlework entry.

Those attending played bingo for some really neat prizes. After the announcement of the winners, a hamburger supper was served by Lodge 17. During the meal, a drawing was held for the door prizes. Winners of the ornament contest were: Wednesday, November 26 East Texas Cloggers/Beginners, 6 to 7 p.m.; East Texas Cloggers/Intermediates, 7 to 8 p.m.

Youth Leader Belenda Barta noted there are 24 active youth club members. The Rummage/Bake Sale will be Saturday, November 15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pleasanton Lion's Club pavilion.

Director Bob Bayer reported the Outreach 2003 goal was achieved on October 13, 2003. He then complimented Domingo Gonzales, III on his poem recitation at the National Fraternal Congress in Houston.

Director Bayer announced his candidacy for Supreme Lodge President.

Dear Readers, Well, we've just had ghost and pumpkin time. We had a pumpkin decorating party Friday, October 17, 2003. Then, on October 26, the District Three Fall Meeting was held at Lodge 154, Fort Worth which included the Christmas ornament contest. It was good to see everyone. Hope everyone had a safe Halloween.

Dear Readers, On November 2, 2003, the New Tabor youth club made flower cups for the nursing home in Caldwell. I got to spray paint the can then we glued, "Happy Thanksgiving from the New Tabor SPJST Youth Club" on the cans.

Mrs. Susan is going to put flowers in them, and we are going to take them to the nursing home this week. I like the SPJST youth club because I have fun at camp.

Lodge 17, New Tabor welcomes Valerie Stephens, age 12, as one of its newest members.

Valerie's parents are Mike and Christine Riley of Caldwell.

Valerie also has two brothers. She attends Caldwell Middle School and is in the seventh grade. She enjoys basketball, shopping, chatting on-line and is involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Valerie was introduced to the SPJST by her friend, Shelby Norman.

Her parents are Dennis and Gina Engelmann of Caldwell. She also has a younger brother named Dennis Ray. Emily attends Caldwell Intermediate school and is in the third grade. She enjoys all types of sports, especially rodeo and swimming. She participates in the Lil Diggers Volleyball, Cooks Point 4-H, St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Burleson County Saddle Club. Emily was introduced to the SPJST by her friends Stacey Norman and Zella Zaskoda.

out. I got three dollars. We discussed our plans for Christmas. We will have our usual Christmas Party in conjunction with the District One Lock-In. The date will be decided later. We also decided to donate slightly used or new toys as our December charity.

Our lodge is having its annual Christmas social and memorial service on Sunday, December 7 starting at 5:30 p.m. This year's memorial service will be very special to me because we will be remembering my Papa, Daniel (Rusty) Hejl who passed away in August. I really miss him a lot.

I brought the door prizes for this month's meeting, and I won one of the prizes. Other winners were Brittany Campise, Zella Zaskoda, Meghan Blum, Nathan Blum, Valerie Stephens, and Kimberly Skrabanek. After the meeting, we all enjoyed corn dogs and punch.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, December 7, 2003.

Lodge 80, Holland Youth Club to host November 13 bake sale at lodge Dear Members and Friends, At our meeting in November, we discussed who would be entering the

Camp Tee-shirt Design Contest. Also, everyone is reminded to bring a soda bottle to make bath fizz, and a gift under $5 for the White Elephant game.

We'll be having a bake sale at the lodge on November 13. We also discussed Operation Valentine. It's about sending helpful items to our military in Iraq. The items should reach them in time for Valentine's Day. Our next meeting will be December 6, at 3 p.m. Hope to see you there!
