Grandparents are Special!

Sunday, September 7 was Grandparents Day. It was also the day of the District Six Fall Meeting hosted by Lodge 8, Weimar. To mark the occasion, District Six youth, pictured above, presented a tribute to all of the grandparents in affenance. Watch for related meeting photos in next week's Vestnik.

Calling all golfers:

Second annual statewide tourney October 11 in Temple The SPJST will be sponsoring its second State Golf Tournament. The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2003 which is Columbus Day weekend. The tournament will be Saturday morning from 8 a.m. till finish. While we know this is a long way off, plans are already in the making.

The tournament is for SPJST members, family, and friends. The tournament is a Four Person Scramble. We are planning for three divisions— Youth Division (ages 16 to 18); Ladies Division; and a Men's Division.

Registration is due on September 29.

You do not have to be a professional. Come out and play with our beginners and the ones who play for fun.

You will have great time and lots of fun.

Kids Helping Kids Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Club President Marcus Huizar presents a two-and-a-half gallon jar filled with pull tabs to District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer. Club members, under the guidance of Youth Leader Belenda Barta, kneeling, presented Brother Bayer with the tabs at the District Seven Fall Meeting hosted by Lodge 202, Jourdanton on September 14. Collecting the pull tabs is an ongoing effort of the part of District Seven to benefit the Ronald McDonald House in Temple. Money generated from the tabs is used to cover home operational expenses. SPJST Library, Archives and Museum Encourages Readers to Observe Czech Heritage Month The SPJST Museum received the following donations in the months of March, April, and May: photo of the third Supreme Lodge Officers donated by Frank and Beverly Dusek of Harlingen; membership ledger book of past Lodge 45, Vlastenec, Shiner - donated by Virginia Baros of Houston; replica of the U.S. Capitol made out of a variety of sticks and a table to set it on - donated by Carolan Thomas of Dallas; and "Words in Stone", a book - donated by Judy Dankers of The Woodlands. We appreciate each of these very unique and interesting donations as these are "a first" to the museum.

In the months of February, March, April, and May, 263 visitors toured the museum. These included youth from Brownie Troop 8151 of Temple, Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club, and pre-k and kindergarten students from Kaleidoscope of Temple. Also touring were visitors from Arizona, Arkansas, California, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Germany, and South Korea.

The SPJST traveling mini-museum was on display at the Tovas Charter School in Temple and Lakewood Elementary School in Belton. I must say that it is indeed a joy to visit the schools and see how interested the students are in the Czech history. They especially enjoy hearing some of my personal stories as a child growing up in a Czech family and community. Many of

them look in awe as I tell them about playing on haystacks, working in the cotton fields from sun up to sun down in the summertime, and riding in a wagon full of cotton traveling to the cotton gin. Of course, the biggest treat about going to the gin was daddy buying me a strawberry soda!

It gives me great satisfaction to see for myself that the youth are in tune to our history and always wanting to hear more.

And speaking of history, let us remember that October is Czech Heritage Month. Please make this an opportunity to sit down with your children (even grown children!), grandchildren, and any other youngsters to talk about some fun and interesting events or experiences you had growing up in a Czech family or community. I've even known families to tape record their conversations with family members so that the history would have less chance of being lost or forgotten. Or if possible, participate with children in some of the enjoyable games and pastimes you enjoyed as a child. You'll be surprised how a child can enjoy the simplest pleasures - like making a mud pie or looking for colorful rocks!

In closing, I hope everyone is enjoying the cooler days of summer.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on lodge, member activities Hi! After a delicious Grandparents Day meal by our youth club, our meeting was called to order by President, Brother Johnnie Krizan, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, 2003. Youth members Courtney Halbert, Anna Dulock, and Lakn Dieterich led all in the Pledge of Allegiance to our U.S. flag as well as our Texas flag. The SPJST motto was recited by Courtney Halbert.

Thanks, little ladies! Also thanks to our youth club for our great meal they served us. Sister Georgie Soukup, Flag Bearer/Guide, gave a report of 36 members present and one guest, Dorothy Firasek.

Brother Johnnie called upon our Secretary, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, for the reading of our minutes from the last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. There was some correspondence—a thank you note from Lydia Dobecka and the Allstars Attitude team coaches and parents; a letter from the Home Office in Temple regarding state tournament dates and places for various activities. Be sure and watch your Vestnik for these important dates. Sister Barbara also had correspondence from Lodge 92, Fort Worth, inviting all to its Czech Heritage Day celebration on Saturday, September 20.

Cost is $8 admission for all day with children 12 and under free.

Lodge Scholarships Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, gave a report to remind anyone who may know of a graduate coming up for May. Scholarship applications need to be completed and submitted by January 31, 2004 with winners being announced in April, 2004. Sister Barbara also reported that the SPJST State Golf Tournament was set for October 11, and a no-tap bowling tournament set for October 4 at Lodge 204, Stephenville. Another important date for all to remember is October 25— Make a Difference Day. The Sunshine Committee's report was given by Sister Barbara Jean Hykel. Sister Irene Schiemenz had to leave early. Get well cards were sent to Dorothy Dvorsky, Robert Dobecka, and Juanita Lovecky.

Sympathy cards were sent to Evelyn and Ernest Bezdek upon the death of Evelyn's sister, Willie May Miller.

Brother Johnnie Krizan, President, brought up old business, which was a report on Westfest, given to everyone. Brother Johnnie thanked Ray Marek for running copies of this report so all could have a copy.

Brother Jerry Kucera, Sales Representative and District Three State Field Representative, gave a report of 52 applications so far for Lodge 6.

Our Financial Secretary and Trustee's Chairman, Brother George Straten, gave his report of two adult and eight juvenile members acquired.

Thanks to Sales Representatives, Sister Lydia Dobecka, and Brother Johnnie Krizan. It was also reported that our next meeting would be on October 6 and would have to change time or date due to RVOS having its social on that day. Our socials for October will be October 3 and October 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Trustee Actions Brother George reported on our trustee's meeting which was mostly Westfest. There were 17 members at this meeting. It was mentioned that some improvements would be made on each restroom, and that disability signs would be placed on the grounds at the front and rear entrances. It was also reported that a "No Parking and/or Loading/Unloading Only" sign would be posted at our new carport entryway so no one would block our covered entry-way. Brother George also brought up that it was mentioned that an extra building for fryers, etc. was needed for our picnic preparations. This was tabled and would be looked into in the next few months.

Another item Brother Johnnie brought up was the extra metal siding from our building after our remodeling was done. Brother George mentioned that there were 27, three-foot wide metal sheets. Bids will be accepted up until our meeting in November, 2003 for approximately 290 running feet of used 26-gauge sheet metal. These are varying lengths—eight foot to 11 feet tall, three-rib panels. If interested, you may contact any lodge officer for details.

Brother Johnnie Krizan mentioned the barbecue team that Lodge 6, Cottonwood, and the SPJST Supreme Lodge sponsors each year at Meridian, Texas. Thanks to Herbert Brem, Dale Sembera, and their wives and families. Watch for a photo later.

This was the iNational Cham pionship Barbecue Cookoff's 16th year at the Bosque Bottoms in Meridian on August 22 to 23. They were expecting about the same prize purse as last year's—$17,000 and over 195 cooking teams. This event raises monies for national and local charities.

Again, thanks to all the Herbert Brem team and their families.

Those in attendance with September birthdays were Sisters Stella Perez, Dorothy Dvorsky, and Irene Schiemenz along with Brothers Joe Dvorsky, and Robert Schiemenz.

8, Weimar reports on August meeting Lodge

Lodge 8, Weimar held its monthly meeting on August 25, 2003 at 7 p.m.

President Jares called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for all deceased members.

Twenty-seven members and guests registered.

All officers were present. State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates was our special visitor.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by the secretary and the treasurer gave the financial report. All were approved by the members.

Communications were read, and from this, we were informed that the District Six Barbecue Cookoff was moved to Taiton. The date remains the same.

We're Getting Close!

Gladys Yates reported to us that as of this date, the Outreach 2003 Campaign needed only 360 applications to meet the quota of 2,205.

Members were appointed to help work at the District Six Fall Meeting.

Erline Janik, Carolyn Tobola, and Earline Muenster volunteered to run the wheel of fortune booth. Henrietta Veselka, Marjorie Gruenwaald, and JoAnn Jares offered to bring cookies for snacking. All others were asked to help set up and clean up.

Lodge 18, Elgin reports on August meeting President Mike Mogonye opened the meeting with a prayer and a moment of prayer for all SPJST members. Then he extended a warm welcome to State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Gladys. We were happy to see her well and visiting the lodges again.

Shirlene read the minutes from the last meeting. Glen gave the treasurer's report. Mary reported on her youth camp and the Youth Achievement Day (YAD). J.B. Anderson won first place and placed second at State YAD level.

Congratulations, J. B. We are proud of you. Mary said camp was great, and the youngsters really enjoyed camp.

Aleen gave the FAC report. The State Golf Tournament is coming up.

We need to pay our fee as we have elected to support the tournament again this year. The SPJST Barbecue Cookoff is coming up. All who want to participate are welcome.

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Jim and Mike Mogonye and Dorothy Tippie. We wish you all many more.

What a Treat!

On August 20, Lodge 18, Elgin treated members to a delicious appreciation dinner of chicken fried steak and all the trimmings. Captain Red Oman served the feast.

Special guests included the various law enforcement and fire department personnel who assist with hall security.

The wonderful ladies of Lodge 18 brought desserts and did they ever have a wide variety! In fact, when one of the security personnel won a door prize, he asked if he could just have his choice from the dessert table!

24, Cyclone invites community to celebrate Czech Heritage Day Lodge

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Come one, come all to the fifth annual Czech Heritage Day celebration at Flag Hall on Saturday, October 4 hosted by SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. The annual celebration is a spirited tribute to Czech heritage and culture in Texas. Establishing a sense of community was very important to early Czechs in Texas. It still is and that's the whole idea of Czech Heritage Day — bringing people together.

Doors open at 4 p.m. for the event which will include a Czech-English polka mass and a public dance. This year's program includes a special tribute to the church in the Czech community. One of the first concerns of the typical emerging Czech community in Texas was the fulfillment of its religious needs. For both Czech Catholics and Protestant Brethren, Czech-speaking priests and pastors were greatly appreciated and in scarce supply. Accordingly, we are honored to have Father David Konderla, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Austin, Reverend Henry Beseda of the Caldwell Brethren Church and Father Walter Matus, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Marak on the program. Also scheduled to perfoini at this year's celebration will be Beseda Dancers of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas, who will be performing at 6:30 p.m.

At 5 p.m., people of all denominations are invited to attend the Czech polka mass with music by Vrazels Polka Band. Following the polka mass, the Vrazels will play for a public dance from 7 to 10:30 p.m.

Tickets for the evening dance will be $5 per person and ages 13 and under will be admitted free.

Hamburgers, sausage wraps and kolaches will be available throughout the day and a prize drawing will be held.

Holder celebrates first birthday at Lodge 38, Kovar Mathew

Mathew Holder, son of Allan and Sheri Holder, celebrated his first birthday Saturday, August 16, 2003 at the Kovar Hall. The theme for the party was Winnie the Pooh with a playground scenery.

His cake was Winnie the Pooh baked by his granny, Jean Lastovica, and decorated by family friend, Mary Ann Herrera. A hot dog supper with chili and beans was served to the 84 friends a family members who helped celebrate his wonderful day. Matt received lots of fun and useful gifts.

The meeting was called to order by President George Pauling on August 17, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall, Elm Mott with all officers present.

There were 20 members present.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and motto.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the July 27 meeting and they were approved as read. Dana also read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge on the update of the Lodge Incentive Program. Lodge 66 has written 42 applications and 32 new members as of July 31, 2003. She also received a filCr on the District Six Barbecue Cookoff on September 12 and 13 at Taiton, Texas.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Mary Alice Langlotz reported that she received her August letter from State FAC Gladys Yates. She welcomed Gladys to our meeting today.

Mary Alice also reported that sponsors are needed for the Golf Tournament and also please register for the event.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Michael Galler reported the committee met today. Today, cold salads, brought by the members, are being served with the committee furnishing desserts and snack crackers. For the September 21 lodge meeting, the committee will furnish all the food so members do not need to bring any food. For the October 19 meeting, the committee will make hamburgers, and will furnish chips and pickles. Members are asked to bring desserts.

Dorothy read a thank you note from Diana Engelke for members thoughts and prayers. Diana we all hope you are feeling better. We miss you. Emma sent a sympathy card to Johnnie and Polly Gaidusek on the death of Polly's sister; and to the Michael Galler family on the death of his uncle Edward Mihatsch. Get well cards were sent to Leona Nors who is in West Rest Haven, to Dakota Yates and to Diana Engelke who had major surgery. Hope all are feeling better by now.

All books will be audited on Monday, July 28 by Rosemary Spence, Irene Mueller, and Janie Dujka at the home of Rosemary Spence.

A discussion was held to change the date of the Lodge 66 Christmas party to December 7, 2003. A member suggested that we have some Czech music at the party since this is a Czech organization. The Entertainment Committee will work on this.

President Pauling reported that a new ice machine was purchased from Ochoa on LaSalle. They also installed a water purifier. A 10-ton air conditioner, air handler, and ducts were installed. These were purchased from Lochridge Priest. Also fans and turbines were purchased and installed in the attic. Thanks to George Pauling, Milan Dujka, and Butchie Dujka for all the work they have done at the hall.

President Pauling reminded the members of the District Three Fall Meeting which will be held in Fort Worth at Lodge 154.

The gift booth usually has home canned pickles, okra and dill cabbage, jelly, plants, crafts, and many other nice items. Any donation will be appreciated. The lodge teen club will run the country store. This is always a fun corner for all. Do donate canned goods, meats, and cold drinks. There will be other booths and games also.

87, Temple reports on September meeting Lodge

On September 9, 2003, the meeting of Lodge 87, Temple was called to order by President Dan Kacir. the Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for departed members. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Bertha Capps and approved.

There was no treasurer's report due to the treasurer's absence. Clarence Entrop is in Scott and White with heart problems and he should be released soon.

Youth Leader Pam Capps reported that the youth club had gained one new member, Christa Mathis. She also noted that the District Two Fall Meeting will be at the Taylor SPJST lodge on September 21. Pam handed out order forms for the SPJST Christmas cards designed by youth members. The deadline for ordering cards is October 10.

There was no old business.

New Business After a lengthy discussion, it was decided to have our member appreciation dinner on May 11, 2004 at the lodge. Sidney Katir made the motion and it was seconded by John Troy.

The type of banquet will be decided at a later date. All members are invited and encouraged to attend our monthly meetings. Our next meeting will be October 14. There will be a covered

dish pot luck dinner.

88, Houston reports on recent, coming lodge happenings Lodge

There was a big party in the Chandelier Ballroom on Sunday, September 7, 2003 hosted by Nat's wife, Barbara. A large crowd celebrated the 75th birthday of Nat Gonzales. Guests enjoyed dancing to the music of Central Texas Sounds.

The grand march was led by Sydney and Georgie Jurchak. The food— baked ham and all the trimmings, was excellent. Many youth club members of past years were there to help Barbara and Nat celebrate.

The youth are having a Christmas ornament contest on September 20 at Lodge 196, Houston-West at the District Five Fall Meeting. Their Halloween party will be on October 18.

Briana Renee Woodall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Woodall, was born on August 19. The proud grandparents are A.J. and Dorothy Fabrygel of Huntsville. Congratulations.

Kelly and Kevin Siblik had a baby boy, Jake Elaney, born August 28.

Kelly, who is Lowrina Lindemann's granddaughter, used to be in the youth club. Grandparents are Diana and Verner Sokol and Lowrina is the great-grandmother. Congratulations to all.

Get well wishes go out to Ed Miculka and to Evelyn Mikeska.

Evelyn should be remembered as a super saleslady of SPJST insurance.

92, Fort Worth invites everyone to Czech Heritage Day September 20 Lodge

Lodge 92 members invite you to join them on Saturday, September 20 as they celebrate their lodge's 93rd anniversary at Czech Heritage Day at National Hall located at 3316 Roberts Cut-off Road in Fort Worth. Doors open at noon. All day admission is $8 for adults and free for children 12 and under with a paid adult.

Dinner will be served from 1 to 6 p.m. Plates are $6.50 each and $4 for children 12 and under.

Enjoy accordion music from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by the Memory Makers Czech Choir at 2 p.m. The opening ceremony will be at 2:30 p.m.

Lodge 139, Danbury reports on September meeting Lodge 139, Danbury met Wednesday September 3, 2003 for its monthly meeting with 13 members present. President Lonnie Lostak opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Correspondences were read and discussed.

183, Arlington hosts family night September 26 Lodge

Instead of having a business meeting in August, we had an appreciation dinner and social. This was held at Spring Creek Barbecue. Thirty-two members attended.

Sister Wagner married Frank C. Wagner on October 19, 1926 at St. Joseph's Church in Moulton.

Together, the Wagners raised cotton, corn, and grain. It was done the old-fashioned way with a horse and plow until they purchased their first tractor in 1945. The Wagners also raised livestock, including cattle, hogs, chickens, and turkeys. Frank passed away in 1988.

She has three sons, Leroy F. Wagner of Shiner, Texas; Dennis Wagner and wife, Laverne of Manvel, Texas; and Eugene Wagner and wife, Ingrid of Houston, Texas.

A daughter, Eugenia Wagner Behlen, passed away in 1988.

Sister Wagner's longtime interest in gardening remains a favorite pastime —SPJST-

Family night was held on August 29. Milka Bralic prepared the main dish and did an excellent job. There were 42 attending this family night.

Afterwards, we socialized and played cards.

September Family Night The next, family night will be on September 26 at 7 p.m. President Ann Pustejovsky advised that from now on the lodge will furnish the main dish and also the desserts at the family night so please bring side dishes instead of desserts. Also if you bring guests, make sure you bring extra side dishes.

The August 24 meeting of Lodge 196, Houston-West was called to order at 2 p.m. Lodge 196 will participate in the Challenge Day to be held after the District Five Fall Meeting on September 20. Fried chicken will be provided for this meeting. Youth are encouraged to participate in the cake baking contest.

Plaques were presented to Marvin Schulz, Evelyn Mikeska and Karl Pflughaupt for serving as past officers at our lodge.

Plans were made for a New Year's Eve dance at our lodge. The Texas Drifters will provide entertainment.

American Czech Culture Society to present cultural performances at State Fair Heritage Celebration The American Czech Club Society, made up of 18 Czech societies in the Central Texas area, is again joining with the Texas Cultural Partnership to present our Czech culture in a Heritage Celebration on October 5 at the State Fair of Texas. Our organization has been solely sponsoring a Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas since 1928.

Circumstances arose seven years ago that made sole sponsorship impossible, so the Society joined with other ethnic organizations to form the Texas Cultural Partnership and have presented our cultures in special venues on various stages throughout the fair grounds. This year will be our eighth year to participate in this venture and showcase Czech singing, dancing, music, food, and culture as well as the cultures of the other ethnic groups before the vast crowds that attend the State Fair.

Souvenir Program The American Czech Culture Society joins the other groups in putting together a souvenir program which tells a little about each of the participating groups, gives recognition to our contributors, prints company advertising, and special tributes to people who wish to honor family and friends in a special way. The money received from advertising, contributors, and tributes is used to pay the admission fees of our performers who come to entertain on this day.

We are asking that you consider supporting our program book, either by a contribution, or by placing an advertisement or words to honor your special family members or friends.

Services for Sister Hanover were held Wednesday, August 27 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Bryan.

The Reverends Morris House, Bob Richers, and Matt Idom officiated.

Burial was in the Wheelock Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jocille Hanover Johnson.

Sister Hanover was born November 11, 1918 in Wheelock, Texas to J.J. and Tracey Scasta. After graduating from a Waco Business College, she was employed as a secretary for the Texas A&M Extension Service a period of four years.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Grady Hanover of Bryan; sister, Lillie Mae Rychlik of Bryan; nieces, Jeanette Koenig and Tamara Rychlik both of Houston, Frances Walton of Huntsville, and Cynthia Janek of Wheelock; nephews, B.B. of Sympathy The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis wish to express their sympathy to the family of RAYMOND J. KUBIN. Mr. Raymond J. Kubin, 72, died Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston.

He was born October 2, 1930 in Ennis, the son of Joe E. and Angeline Vrana Kubin. He was reared in Ennis and was a 1948 graduate of St. John High School. He then worked on the family farm. In 1952, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. He was discharged in 1954. On June 28, 1958, he was married to Annie Lee Babovec of Ennis. After their marriage, they lived in Ennis where he was employed by A. Gunthard Co. in 1957.

He retired as the production time manager for operations in 1989 after 32 years of service. He then engaged in farming. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis and RVOS 51.

He is survived by his wife, Annie of Ennis; daughter and their husbands, Linda and Daniel Johnson, Dorothy and Len McCoy, all of Ennis; brother, George Kubin of Ennis; sisters, Georgia Byrd and Evelyn Wilson, both of Ennis; and grandchildren, Bradley and Parker McCoy. Rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Monday, September 2 in the Keever Chapel. Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday, September 3 in St. John Catholic Church with Father Fred Caldwell as celebrant.

Serving as pallbearers were Mike Mosley, Chad Spence, Bruce Kubin, Chris Kubin, Adam Byrd, and James Byrd. Interment was in St. Joseph Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek No. 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincerest and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, JOE BENNETT BALUSEK of Moulton, who passed away on Friday, August 15, 2003 at the age of 71 years. He was born on January 12, 1932 in Lavaca County to Joe, Sr. and Annie Kartman Balusek. On June 16, 1956, he married Lillie Belicek in the Vsetin Czech-Moravian Brethren Church. He entered the U.S. Army on January 28, 1953 and received the Korea Service Medal, National Defense Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation for Korea. He was honorably discharged on December 24, 1954.

He was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., the Czech-Moravian Brethren Church, and Vsetin Cemetery where he served as treasurer. He was also a member of SPJST for over 50 years Survivors include his wife, Lillie Balusek; daughter, Susan Siptak and husband, Joseph of Bay City; son, Glenn Balusek and wife, Robyn of Conroe; six grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation began at 11:30 a.m., Monday, August 18 at Kubena Funeral Home Chapel. Prayer service was held at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 18 at Kubena Funeral Home Chapel Services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 19 at Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church Reverend Henry Beseda and Reverend Albert Flathmann officiated.

Resolution of Sympathy The officers and member of SPJST Lode 25, Ennis, wish to express their sympathy to the family and friends of KATHY TROJACEK. Mrs. Mary Catherine "Katy" Trojacek, 78, died Friday, September 5, 2003 at the Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie.

She was born February 15, 1925 in Yoakum, Texas, the daughter of Henry and Catherine McKeon Hough. She was a 1941 graduate of Ennis High School and attended TWU for one year.

She was then employed as a clerk with Southern Pacific Railroad. On May 22, 1954, she was married to Wesley J. Trojacek of Ennis. After their marriage, they lived in Ennis.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church, the KJZT, SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis, and the Ennis A&M Club.

She is survived by daughters, Cathy and husband, Steve Mohr of Southlake; Dr. Theresa Trojacek of Katy; daughter in-law and husband, Kitty and Joe Crow of Ennis; sister, Edna Clair of Carrollton; and grandchildren, Wesley Ludwig, Annie and Kate Crow, Scott and Austin Mohr.

She was preceded in death by husband, Wesley, on June 20, 1988; son, Joe D. Trojacek; grandson, Matthew Trojacek on June 15, 1990; and grandson, Ryan Mohr in 1994.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Sunday, September 7 in the Keever Chapel. Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, September 8 in St. John Catholic Church with the Reverend Fred Caldwell as celebrant. Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, September 2 at New World United Methodist Church, Arlington. Burial was in Moore Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, September 1 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Taborsky was a Vietnam veteran and a member of the Arlington Board of Realtors. He was also a

member of the Kappa Sigma Alumni Association at UTA, Czech Lodge SPJST 92 and the Eagle Mountain Homeowners Association. He was also a past Optimist coach.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Prochaska Taborsky; sons, David Taborsky of Dallas and Jeff Taborsky of Fort Worth; step-son, Jerral Lane of Dallas; parents, Ivan and Ema Taborsky of Arlington; sisters, Ivanka Dzierwa of Falls Church, Virginia and Nina Taborsky of Dallas; and several other relatives.

The 2004 scholarship application season has arrived!

Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for a year or more are invited to submit their requests for scholarship application forms for the 2004 academic year.

Established in 1982, the SPJST Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and through contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded.

In 2003, the SPJST awarded a total of 67 scholarships for $67,500 through its scholarship program. To obtain an SPJ37 General Scholarship application and complete guidelines, please contact the SPJST Home Office at (800) 727-7578 or (254) 7731575 and ask for the Scholarship Department.

Youth Letters Section District Two Youth Counselor extends invitation to district meeting Dear Members, The Fall District Two Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2003 at Lodge 29, Taylor. Registration will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. The adult meeting begins at 2 p.m. This is a fun day for all ages attending. There will be the spinning wheels and a pastry walk. Each family is asked to bring canned goods for the country store and some type of dessert (cake, cookies, brownies, etc.). Also available will be a horseshoe tournament. This is open to all adults and youth.

District Two Queen Dawn Capps (87) and King Andy Baker (89) will be presenting their speeches. We will also be holding a silent auction with all proceeds going to the District Youth fund. We ask that all youth clubs and anyone else who would like, to please donate an item worth $10.

I hope you make plans to bring your ornament. Remember, you must be present to receive your prize.

Ornament rules are as follows: 1. The overall size must be no bigger than six inches excluding hanger.

2. Ornaments must be made from scratch. Kits are not allowed.

3. You may use any material appropriate for a Christmas ornament.

Food is not appropriate.

Styrofoam balls are acceptable.

The winning ornament from each youth age group will be displayed on the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree in the Home Office lobby.

Czech Currency: What Do You Know?

By David Oberle, Jr., Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club When my grandmother and grandfather visited the Czech Republic in 2002, they showed me some of the currency that they used to purchase food, drinks, and most importantly for me, souvenirs.

First, I have to tell you that the Czech Republic is a fairly inexpensive city to visit and since 1989, it has established hundreds of banks and exchange bureaus, some of which stay open all night. Credit cards are becoming more popular in the Czech Republic; however, only the larger hotels, restaurants and businesses accept them. So it's best not to rely

too heavily on them. And even though carrying the major brands of travelers cheques (American Express or Thomas Cook) is safer than carrying cash, they can only be exchanged at banks as no major businesses will except them as currency. You will also need to keep your transaction slips when converting from foreign currency (the US dollar, for example) to Czech currency so that when leaving the Czech Republic you can always reconvert the Czech currency to US currency.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club member enjoys SPJST camp Dear Vestnik Readers, I attended SPJST Camp on July 23 - 26, 2003. I had such a good time and did so many things. We swam, rode horses, watched a movie, and made crafts. One night, we got to do all kinds of really fun things that had to do with the 50s theme, and we got to dress up! I wore my dad's jacket, so I looked cool!

Dear Fellow Youth Members, I was selected to be a duchess for April Wotipka for our District One Youth Achievement Day held in Caldwell in July. I got to dress up in my first communion dress again. I also got $33 for being a duchess, entering cookies in foods, and being in a skit. Our skit was called "Love Over Money."

Our club got to go to Schlitterbahn on July 31. My morn went with us, and I got a hat with a castle and diamonds on it. I had a great time. This HERE'S THE PROOF! Colby time my daddy didn't come along.

At our meeting, we started working on our Junior Youth Talent for District One Youth Achievement Day. We did a song to Lodge Aaron Tippin's, "I'll take Love Over Money." I was Aaron Tippin in the skit so I had to practice on singing the song and not having the words come out. We practiced about six times. It Youth members of Lodge 25, Ennis was really hard. At night, I worked on Rachel Hunter, Amanda Jurik, my song to make sure that I knew all Michael Jurik, Jordon Hunter, Jerrod the words. I think we did a really good Ryan, Jake Holland, Joseph Spaniel, job and I had fun!
