2003 Drive Looking Good 2003 Membership Drive Appearing on page four of this week's issue is the monthly update of applications written through July of the Outreach 2003 membership drive.

Individual lodge quotas are also stated.

To date, we're at 1,618 applications, putting us 587 applications short of our year-end goal of 2,205. According to the membership drive guidelines, the state must meet its 2,205 application quota and the lodge must achieve its individual lodge quota before incentives are awarded.

At the present rate, we're looking good to achieve our statewide application quota for 2003.

Please check out your local lodge numbers and see how you're progressing. In the event that you aren't as far along as you'd like to be, take heart. There are still better than four months remaining to achieve your individual lodge objectives.

Remember, too, that the lodge officers who successfully promote membership in the SPJST will also be eligible to receive cash awards at next year's incentive banquet. The number of awards presented will be determined after the final count of qualifying lodges at the end of 2003. Various youth club incentives also apply.

Keep up the good work and if you have questions regarding details of the Outreach 2003 incentive program as they apply to your lodge, please contact your district director, state field representative or the SPJST Insurance Department at 800.727.7578.

Please note that State YAD and Royalty results will appear in a special supplement to be published by the SPJST Youth Department in the coming weeks. The edition, which was authorized by the Supreme Lodge in January and at the recommendation of the State Youth Director, will include all district youth achievement day results and photos, camp summaries and photos. The publication should be a real treat and one that helps to capture the vitality of the Youth Program.

Coming Soon National Make a Difference Day is Saturday, October 25, 2003. Created

by USA WEEKEND magazine, Make a Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. Since it was organized in 1992, millions have participated. SPJST members can too!

Everyone — young and old, individuals and groups — can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. Your lodge project can be as large or small as you wish! Look around your community and see what needs to be done. If you r lodge already volunteers regularly, that's great. On Make a Difference Day, give an extra push to your ongoing volunteer activity. If you don't volunteer, it's an excellent opportunity to get started.

While service provides its own reward, participating in the National Make a Difference Day could also mean cash dollars for your lodge or youth club project. Thanks to corporate sponsorships, numerous projects will be receiving cash grants.

Around the State District Two Schlitterbahn trip this Saturday We will be parking and getting tables at Blastenhauf. The park recommends that you begin your day hers. Master Blaster is the ride, so get in line early.

Directions to Blastenhauf: Take Exit 189 in New Braunfels. Turn right onto Highway 46. Take a left on Common Street. Take a left at the first light on Common Street.

This is Union Street. Continue down this street approximately three blocks (stay in left lane). Turn right at the white gate. Blastenhauf will be on your left and Surfenburg is on the right.

Please be at the Blastenhauf gate no later than 9:30 p.m. to pick up your tickets. For those wishing to caravan down, Patsy will be leaving

from the SPJST Home Office in Temple at 7 a.m.

Six invites members to enter various contests District

The District Six Fall Meeting and Fun Day will be held Sunday, September 7, 2003 at Holman Hall near Weimar. Lodge 8, Weimar will be hosting the day's activities.

As usual, we will have the needlework, horseshoes, Christmas ornament and food contests (cookies this year) for the adults. Any member of District Six over the age of 18 is encouraged to enter any or all of the contests. Cash prizes and awards will be given for first, second, and third places in each category.

Lodge 8, Weimar Hosts District Six Fall Meeting September 7 at Holman Hall Dear Readers, The District Six Fall Meeting will be held Sunday, September 7, 2003.

Lodge 8, Weimar will host the meeting at Holman Hall in Weimar. To get there, take FM 155 North towards LaGrange and then exit on to FM 155.

Go approximately six miles to Holman. The Holman Steak House is on the west side of FM 155 and Holman Hall is on the east side of the road.

Lodge Donations Lodges are asked to send in their usual donation per member to District Six Treasurer, A. J. "Tony" Kelner at 911 Avenue K, Rosenburg Texas 77471. Lodges are also asked to bring a door prize and two desserts for

everyone to enjoy. Members may also bring prizes for the wheel of fortune booth.

Everyone participating in the„district contests should review the criteria for each contest as outlined in the letter from District Six FAC Helen Zabransky.

Also, please note that St. Michael's Catholic Church in Weimar has mass at 10 a.m. In addition to the printed directions here, you may also refer to the map sent to your lodge by Leo and Jo Ann Jares. I look forward to seeing everyone and enjoying the afternoon.

SPJST records 1,618 applications written through July in Outreach 2003 program Through the end of July, the SPJST had received 1,618 applicatons for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Outreach 2003 membership drive is to write at least 2,205 applications in 2003.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Outreach 2003 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through July 31, 2003.

Needlework must be done by hand-embroidery, crochet, needlepoint — with the stitches visible in the front and back. Items may be framed, but nothing should cover the actual stitching.

The horseshoe contest will be the same as last year. Christmas ornaments must be handmade, but not from a kit and not over six inches in length.

The cookie contest follows the same rules as outlined in the Youth Rule Book. One dozen of the cookies you are entering must be displayed on a white styrofoam plate and should be brought to the competition in a plastic bag. Cookies must be made from scratch and should require no refrigeration. No mixes allowed. The recipe must accompany the entry on a 4 by 6 -inch index card. Cookies will be tasted and will be judged as follows: Taste: pleasing, delicate, well-blended flavor of ingredients Texture: characteristics of ingredients used Appearance: uniform thickness, size and shape After judging, there will be a silent auction for anyone wishing to have their cookies placed for sale to benefit an SPJST charity.

Registration for the contests will begin at 11 a.m. and end promptly at 11:30 a.m. Winners must be present to receive awards. If you have any questions, please give me a cail at (361) 798-3347. I am looking forward to traveling to Weimar and spending the day with everyone.

District Six annua barbecue cookoff, games in Talton September 12, 13 SPJST District Six hosts its Fifth Annual Barbecue Cookoff on Friday and Saturday, September 12 and 13, 2003.

Organizers invite all interested cookers and funseekers to mark these days on their calendar and join them at the Taiton Community Center in Taiton The center is easily accessible from Highway 71 North in Taiton, Texas. Please note that this is a change from the originally scheduled cookoff site.

Cookoff activities get underway on Friday evening with DJ music from 8 p.m. until 12 a.m.

Come out on Saturday and see the spectacular pits and taste the prizewinning barbecue! There will also be food and drink concessions, arts and crafts booths, a prize drawing and various games, including the wheel of fortune. Family activities begin at 10 a.m.

6, Cottonwood reports on August meeting Lodge

Hi! With the absence of our President, Brother Johnnie Krizan, our meeting was called to order on Sunday, August 3 at 5 p.m. by Vice President Brother Ray Perez The youth club led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance with the SPJST motto recited by Christi Sparkman.

There were 26 members present.

Brother Ray Perez called upon Barbara Jean Hykel for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. They were approved as read. Correspondence included thank you notes from Brooke Craig and Lakn Dieterich relative to the donation made for them to participate in the Texas Teen Pageant. Sister Barbara also read a thank you from District Three Youth Counselor, Bessie Petr, thanking all of her assistants and thanking Lodge 6, Cottonwood, for their contributions to the youth camp at Val Verde.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, treasurer, gave her report and it was approved as given.

As youth leader, she gave that report, too. She reported that they all had a great time at camp and that the food was great, mentioning that she had not seen the kids eat so good. She also thanked all who helped with their bingo and prize drawing at our picnic while they were at camp. Sister Peggy also encouraged everyone to attend State Youth Achievement Day at Temple on August 9. With Westfest coming up next, she also mentioned that the youth would be fixing sausage on Friday, August 15 for the baking of their kolaches on Saturday, August 16.

Sister Peggy also reported that they would be supplying the meal for our next meeting on September 7 for Grandparents Day. The meal will be served at 12:30 p.m. The youth awards will also be presented that day during our meeting.

Brother George Straten, financial secretary, gave his report. He reported two new adult members, written by Johnnie Krizan, Sales Representative.

Brother George reported that our Trustee's Meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on August 15. He also mentioned that he was giving up his duties of potato peeling for Westfest and wants someone to take over that job for him to help out a bit since he bakes all the loaves of bread and other duties.

Brothers Al Soukup and Joe Dvorsky volunteered their services for the potato peeling duties and feeding everyone on that workday.

The Sunshine Committee, Sister Irene Schiemenz, gave her report of sending get well cards to Sister Jerelene Lenart, and Youth Member Bracie Craig since she broke her arm.

Brother Ray Perez called upon Sister Barbara Hykel, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, for her report. She mentioned that the picnic was very hard and stressful this year and she thanked everyone for all their help. She also apologized for any hurt feelings that may have surfaced. Sister Barbara also mentioned about dispensing our door prizes that we have during our monthly meetings. It was later brought up by a motion and seconded to discontinue with the bringing of gifts to our meetings for exchange. This motion passed, so we will not be exchanging gifts at our meetings from now on unless we'designate at a special occasion.

Second Vice President, Brother Milton Peterson, gave a report on our picnic that was held on July 2. Thanks to all who helped out and to all that came and spent the afternoon with us, eating a meal, playing bingo, buying from our auction, or just enjoying lots of fellowship. We look forward to seeing people again next year.

We had one in attendance with a birthday this month, Kim Seith.

Happy birthday, Kim and to all with a birthday this month. Our cash door prize was won by Joe Dvorsky. Our progressive door prizes were drawn with the winners were Jay Laumeister, who was not present, and Henry Blahuta. Congratulations! Various other door prizes were exchanged.

The meeting was adjourned until next month at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 7. 2003. Our meal will be before our meeting this time, so remember to come out for our Grandparents Day meal prepared totally by the Youth Club. The meal will be served at 12:30 p.m. See you there!

Lodge 18, Elgin reports on July meeting

Lodge 39, Bryan posts notice of meeting change

On July 15, President Mike opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for all SPJST members. Two officers were absent—Mary was away at youth camp, and Agnes is away for the summer. All other officers were present.

Shirlene read the minutes. Glen gave the treasurer's report. Aleen gave the Fraternal Activities Coordinator's report and again asked all to please remember to keep track of your hours, both fraternal and community.

Youth Achievement Day will be on August 9. We should all try to attend to support our youth. Michelle gave the youth report in Mary's absence.

Charles gave the bar report. Gladys gave the ticket report, and Irene gave the house report. Johnny gave the board report and said the board is planning an appreciation dinner for August.

The membership will make a donation to an Elgin family who lost everything in a fire and to a past member who has been diagnosed with cancer.

We need to update all our fire extinguishers. We will install safety latches on the exit doors and correct the exit signs. The ones we have are not up to safety standards.

Due to the conflict of our lodge meetings and district meetings, we voted in our last meeting to change as follows: Starting in August 2003, we will hold all future meetings on the second Sunday of each month. Lunch will be at 12:30 p.m. The meeting will follow at 1 p.m. Meals will be the same as in the past - no change.

66, Waco reports on July meeting Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President George Pauling on July 27, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall, Elm Mott with 21 adult members present.

All officers were present.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased member, Edwin Narovec, Jr. Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the June 15, 2003 meeting, and they were approved as read.

President Pauling had Dana read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar about the visiting Prime Minister Vladimir Spidla of the Czech Republic in Houston. Dana also read a letter from Assistant District Youth Counselor Diana Engelke thanking those who made donations to the youth camp.

She especially thanked the Mike Galler family for getting the bottled water donated; to Gladys Yates for getting the tubs of ice cream for root beer floats; and to George Pauling for donating the hamburger and hot dog buns.

President George Pauling announced that Jerry Kucera enlisted our lodge a new insurance sales representative, David W. Echols, Jr. Welcome aboard.

Chairman of the Board Milan Dujka had Secretary of the Board LaNell Brem read the minutes of the board meeting of July 27.

Mary Alice Langlotz gave the Fraternal Activities Coordinator's (FAC) report. She received her regular monthly letter for July from State FAC Gladys Yates listing all her upcoming events. She reported that the State YAD is scheduled for August 9 at the Mayborn Center in Temple.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Michael Galler reported that the committee met today, July 27.

Today, the members brought sandwiches, and the committee furnished desserts, chips, and pickles. For the August 15 lodge meeting members are asked to bring cold salads of their choice. The committee will furnish desserts and snack crackers. For the September 21 meeting, the meal will be discussed at a later date.

Lodge 84, Dallas reports on July meeting Dear Members, Our President Justine Yeager called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. Flag Bearer Wanda Petr led us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Secretary Hughes reading the minutes of the last meeting.

There was discussion of the work being done to the conference room, the bathrooms, baby nursery, new wall covering, and painting by hard-working members to make the lodge take on a new look. Names of all who are responsible for the change will be announced as soon as the list is complete.

Sister Wanda Petr sent cards to the following—sympathy card to Sister Rudy Gaiser - loss of husband; to Brother Larry, Brother David Gaiser, and Sister Sharon Gaiser Maloney - loss of father, Brother Bill Gaiser. Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the teens and youth spent the day at Hurricane Harbor. The teens held their meeting at the water park. They discussed the spaghetti supper on July 29

at 6:30 p.m.; the Princess Ball on August 16; and Youth Achievement Day on August 9. Bessie reported having fun at camp. She thanked all who helped make it so fun. She also thanked all for donating items of food and drink, making happy campers during their stay at Val Verde. Brother Ben Jarma reported that October 5 at the State Fair of Texas is when many Czechs, Norway, Italians etc. gather to entertain visitors with dance music, etc. Make plans to go!

Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Faye Rejcek reported on the meeting held at Lodge 84. State FAC Sister Gladys Yates represented the SPJST Home Office and spoke of how important it is to do good deeds for your fellow man, whether it is for the lodge or for your community. It is also important to keep a record of it which is then given to your lodge FAC (Sister Rejcek). She in turn sends it to Temple.

Your good deeds do count, but a record of time, date, etc. needs to be kept.

Next Meeting August 18 Our August 18 meeting is at 4 p.m. followed by a pot luck supper. Plan to be on time at 4 p.m. We will be addressing letters to members to remember our Czechfest on September 21. We can sure use help sorting, seal-

Lodge 88, Houston members enjoy Super Achiever Awards Party The Super Achiever Awards Party on Sunday, July 18, 2003 was enjoyed by everyone who was there. Many prizes were given to lucky members.

I have been asked to mention the Blue Room Party which is on August 17. Bobby Jones will be playing. The party is from 3 to 8 p.m. and cost is $15 per person. Apparently, it has been erroneously advertised somewhere as $17.50 per person. Please

In looking through the Chronicle, I spotted a picture of a good looking couple, Enos and Bernice Wessels, who celebrated their 60th Anniversary on July 22. Congratulations!

Ed Gerlach, a local big band, is playing at the Chandelier Ballroom again on August 16. When he played in May, everyone said he was great.

He used to play for us during the 70s and still has beautiful ballroom music.

Sarah Boylan and Timothy Arion united in the celebration of Holy Matrimony on August 4, 2003 at 6 p.m. at Lover's Lane United Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas.

Sarah is the daughter of Reverend John and Mrs. Teresa Boylan of Plano and the granddaughter of Stanley and Martha Vrla of Dallas.

All are members of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas. Tim is the son of Joe Arion of Dallas.

Sarah is a 2003 SPJST Scholarship winner and a student at Texas Woman's University and Tim works in Carrollton.

Maid of Honor was Sarah's sister, Lance Corporal Elizabeth Boylan, USMC, stationed in Quantico, Virginia, who was granted a special leave to attend the wedding. Virginia is also a member of Lodge 130. Best man was the groom's father, Joe "Best of luck to Sarah and Tim as they begin their new life together," writes Uncle John Vrla.

Sarah Boylan and Timothy Arion were married on _August 4, 2003 at the Lover's Lane United Methodist Church in Dallas.

Arion. Bridesmaids were Kathy Miller, Julie Vrla, Anita Young, and Cande Evans. Flower girls were Peyton Reynolds and the bride's niece, Alyssa Boylan. Groomsmen and ushers were Anthony Burton, Ryan Bartlett, Doug Burton, Randy Failinger, and Dan Wine.

After the wedding ceremony, all enjoyed a Italian buffet dinner, wedding cake, and a toast to the bride and groom. Special thanks to the bride's brother, Chris Boylan, who put together a special PowerPoint slide show for the reception for all to see and enjoy.

The couple will live in Lewisville after a honeymoon to Hawaii.

Lodge 93, Hobson reports on July meeting The meeting and social of SPJST Lodge 93, Hobson was held on Thursday, July 17, 2003 at 7 p.m. at the Polak's Cafe between Kenedy and Karnes City.

The meeting was called to order by President E.R. (Sonny) Prasek. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. The minutes were read and approved. Presentation of scholarship were awarded—one to Angela Jansky and one to Mollie Moczygemba. Two 50-year pins were awarded to Marcine Dupnik and to Jean Harrison.

Gladys Lobner was introduced as a new sales agent. We wish her much success.

Lodge Gives to Fire Truck Fund It was noted the lodge donated $200 to the Rescue Fire Truck Fund in Karnes City. Prizes were brought

by Chairman Bob Bayer. Thanks for the prizes.

A delicious meal of chopped steak was enjoyed by 35 guests and members.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton met Sunday, August 3, 2003 at the Jourdanton Community Center with 37 members and 10 guests present.

Special guest was Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Seven Director Bob Bayer. Sales Representatives

present were Larry Wagner, Jr., Joe Huizar and Jesse Huizar. President Jeff Barta presided. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes. Treasurer Melba Novosad presented the financial report.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Ann Barta reported on "Stuff the Bus" which was sponsored by Lodge 202.

New members are Maria Reyes Gonzales and Domingo Gonzales, III. Lodge 202 will host the District Seven Family Fun Day September 14 at the Jourdanton Community Center. A catered barbecue meal will be served for $3 per plate. Lodge members are asked to be at the center at 10 a.m. to set up for the day's activities.

Youth Report Youth Leader Belenda Barta and Youth Club President Marcus Huizar reported on District Camp. Lodge 202: and District Seven King and Duke are Marcus Huizar and Domingo Gonzales III, respectively. A number of youth from the lodge will compete at State Youth Achievement Day. Director Bob Bayer congratulated the lodge on hosting a successful District YAD. There were 177 entries compared to 79 a year ago.

Buckskin Brigade Presentation Eric House reports to Lodge 202, Jourdon his adventure at the Buckskin Brigade Camp at the August 3 meeting of Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

The camp was held June 1 - 5 at the Chaparossa Ranch near La Pryor, Texas. Pictured, at far right, listening attentively, is Eric's grandmother, Bettie House. The Texas Brigades is a wildlife-focused leadership development program for high school youth, ages 13-17. Top wildlife professionals and resource managers serve as instructors and mentors. The program is a cooperative effort of Texas Cooperative Extension, Texas Wildlife Association, Texas Parks & Wildlife, USDANRCS, Quail Unlimited, and the National Wild Turkey Federation. The Texas Brigades are supported by numerous individuals, private businesses, foundations and other non-profit organizations.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy The members of SPJST Lodge 76, Wichita Falls, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, MARY T. POKORNY PENNARTZ. Mary T. Pokorny Pennartz, 85 of Wichita Falls died Wednesday, January 15, 2003.

The funeral liturgy was celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Reverend Ivor Kooh, Pastor, as celebrant. Rite of committal followed at Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.

A daughter of the late John and Theresa Kovar, she was born June 9, 1917 in Baylor County. Mary was a graduate of Megargel High School.

On June 5, 1939, she married Lee Pokorny in Megargel. He preceded her death in 1979.

In 1981, she married Bill Pennartz.

A homemaker, she was an active member of the SPJST since 1945.

She was a parishioner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society, and served as the past president of the Rancho Vista Home Demonstration Club.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Pennartz of Wichita Falls; daughters, Janet Simpson of Mesquite, Texas, and Dolores Payne of Amarillo, Texas; sister, Clara Ann Urbanovsky of Houston; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several step children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The Christian wake service was held at 7 p.m., Friday, January 17 in the chapel of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls.

For those desiring, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Sacred Heart Altar Society; or to the Building Fund.

Our departed sister will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge hvezda Texasu, No. 47, Seaton, on behalf of the officers and the entire lodge membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the surviving family of our dear departed member, GARY PAUL HUTKA, 35 of Zabcikville, who died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 after an accident on FM 2904 at Airville.

Gary was born July 26, 1967 in Austin to Emilie Konarik Hutka and Glenn Hutka. He loved collecting guns and knives and enjoyed lifting weights.

He was preceded in death by his

father, Glenn Hutka on February 17, 2001.

He is survived by his mother, Emilie Hutka of Zabcikville; sons, Jamie Hutka and Zachary Hutka of Rogers; sister, Lisa Hutka of Copperas Cove; and brothers, Roderick Hutka of Terrell, Glenn Allen Hutka of Zabcikville, Michael Hutka of Georgetown; and Patrick Hutka of Temple.

A rosary was recited Friday, July 18, 2003 at Harper-Talasek at 7 p.m.

Funeral services were at HarperTalasek Funeral Chapel with Reverend Walter Matus officiating on Saturday, July 19 at 10 a.m.

Burial followed at Seaton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Rogers Youth Baseball Association, P.O. Box 13, Rogers, Texas 76569.

Resolution of Sympathy On behalf of Lodge 54, West, the Resolution Committee wishes to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge member, DOROTHY MARCHAK, age 79 of West, who passed away Sunday, afternoon, July 20, 2003 at West Rest Haven.

A rosary was recited 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 22 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 10:15 a.m. following the rosary at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Reverend Isidore Rozycki as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family received visitors from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, July 21 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Marchak was born September 15, 1923 in West, the daughter of Anton and Emilie (Gerik) Zatopek.

She married Alvin W. Marchak on August 29, 1945 in Kansas City, Missouri. He preceded her in death on April 10, 2003. After graduating from West High School and Providence Nursing School, they moved to La Marque, then Galveston where she worked as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for the University of Texas Medical Branch. She also worked for the Galveston Public School District for 25 years as a School Nurse Practitioner. After their retirement, they moved back to West, and she helped with many volunteer organizations including West Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and volunteering once a week as a nurse for the hospital, helping set up and work for the Kiwanis Red Cross Blood Drive, putting cookbooks together for the

Dear Friends, Congratulations to all our members who participated in the District Two Youth Achievement Day! There were a lot of great crafts and talent.

Our August 3 meeting was held at Flag Hall at 2 p.m. Vice Presient Trent Coots filled in for the president. Lodge 24, Cyclone President Brian Vanicek gave us some inspiring words and Youth Leader Joan Vanicek gave us information on State YAD and the Schlitterbahn trip coming up on August 16. After the meeting, we had pizza and made gifts for Grandparents Day. Our next meeting is Sunday, Sepember 14 at 2 p.m. at the Food Court in Temple Mall. Friends and parents are welcome!

SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis was the setting for the District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, June 22. Youth Clubs from Dallas, Arlington, West, Waco, Fort Worth, and Ennis competed in arts, crafts, talent, and royalty.

Participants from the Ennis Youth Club were Jake Holland, Joseph Spaniel, Randy Trojacek, Rachel Hunter, Jerrod Ryan, Blake Ryan, Dillon Baker, Michael Jurik, Rachel Clark, Tori Motley, Amanda Jurik, and Dustin Motley.

Winners who will be going to State Youth Achievement Day in Temple on August 9 are Rachel Hunter, District Three Queen. Rachel composed and recited a three minute speech and competed against six other queen contestants. Her speech is entitled "The Values of TeamWork Within the SPJST." Rachel also won first place in pictorial arts—"Pastel Flowers."

Rachel's duchess is Amanda Jurik.

Amanda will also compete with her first place winners in Science and Education—"Four Seasons"; and Constructed Items— "Flowers in Clay Pot".

Tori Motley's competed in Handicraft and won first place for her creation, "Clay Pot Girl."

Michael Jurik won first place in Constructed Items—"Wooden Bench".

Michael also tied for first place in the Junior Merit Point Contest.

Raychel Clark won first place in talent competition. Her dance performance to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will be performed at State YAD. She also won first in Hobby Kits—"Beaded Banner" and Photography—"The Homestead."

Blake Ryan's was first place winners were in Science and Education— "Driving Directions," Handicraft— "Running Wolf' (wood burning); and in talent competition, his performance was a monologue entitled "See Me".

Jerrod Ryan won first place in Needlework—"Carolina Lily," a loophook creation.

Dillon Baker won first place in the Junior Merit Points Contest.

Josep H. Spaniel and Randy Trojacek both won third place in the Senior Merit Points Contest.

The youth club participated in the Scrapbook and Poster contests and won third place in both. The theme, "SPJST - A Dream Worth Keeping" was carried out throughout both entries.

Jake Holland won first place in the Senior Merit Points Contest. Jake is also the current SPJST State King. His duke is Michael Jurik. Jake and Michael have represented the SPJST

throughout the state of Texas this past year and will attend State YAD in Temple. At this event, they will crown a new state winner. Jake was awarded two scholarships from the SPJST. One was a $1,000 Royalty Scholarship that is given to the State King and Queen after a year of reigning and completing six appearances. The other is a $1000 SPJST Leadership Scholarship that Jake won based on his essay, leadership qualities, and community service.

84, Dallas Junior Youth Club reports on July meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The July meeting of the Junior Youth Club was held at the lodge. We started with the pledge of allegiance and a silent prayer. Alex Andreason read the minutes of the previous meeting. There were no new members or visitors at the meeting. The birthdays were announced, and they were Bessie, Desiree and Ryan. After that, Emily Andreason read the motto.

Then we talked about the old news, including practices, District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD), Hurricane Harbor and summer camp.

New business included the Teen Club spaghetti dinner, a trip to Buckner Children's Home to deliver magazines, August birthdays, State YAD and the Princess Ball.

David Oberle gave a presentation about his trip to the Grand Canyon. He brought back a rock that was a piece of it.

The youth leader repoted that the spaghetti dinner was $5 per plate, that there would be a bake sale and bingo and the doors opened at 6:30 pm.

Youth Club member enjoys camping On July 23 to 26, 2003, District One youth club went to Camp Val Verde in McGregor, and we had so much fun. I was very disappointed that my mom wasn't our cabin chaperone, but it was okay. I still had my cousin. My favorite was going horseback riding and the water balloon war.

Schlitterbahn Trip On July 31, District One went to Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. I had so much fun with my cousin, Chase, and my mom. My cousin's and my favorite thing was playing in the pirate ship.

The kids were awesome! I made tons of new friends (Nick - Goat Man) and the stable crew.

The only setback I had was being bit by a spider on my burn. It was very painful, and I even got to visit a Waco doctor, but regardless, I had a great time. My favorite part was every night, Dale Korth, my bud, graced us with his songs on the guitar.

This Thursday, all of District One will be attending Schlitterbahn.

Youth Club member serves as LIT Dear Vestnik Readers: I had a lot of fun at District One Camp. This year was my first year to be a LIT (Leader-in-Training). It was a lot of fun having water balloon fights, karaoke night and seeing Elvis sing.

Group Four and Five boys stayed in a two-story haunted house. It was cool. I think I saw ghost! Camp was really fun.

Victoria County CHS Chapter News Karel Matejka of El Campo was guest speaker at the March 20, 2003 meeting of the Victoria County chapter of the Texas Czech Heritage Society. He shared his experiences of fleeing Czechoslovakia in 1948 and events taking place with the Nazis and Communists beginning in 1936.

Karel came to Texas on February 1, 1953. His native home was Vimperk, Bohemia. He realizes the price of freedom having had to give up his bakery and grocery store, fleeing with an hour's notice.

19th Anniversary Meeting and Dinner in June Our gathering was well attended with approximately 78 members and guests in attendance on June 26. The event was held at the Holy Family Church Parish Hall. Scholarship winners were special guests, James Janak, graduate from St. Joseph's High School, son of Chapter Charter members, Joe and Carol Janak; and Misty Gibbs, Memorial High School graduate whose member grandparents are Lloyd and Irene Heibel. Each received $500 scholarships. Both plan on attending Victoria College.

Both Kay Jasek and Patrick Janak were recognized for completing the 14-week Czech classes taught at Victoria College by Thadious Polasek. They will be reimbursed their cost of the course at $199 each.

A Czech cultural program was presented by Marjorie Matula, assisted

by Reuben Petrusek and Irene Brosch on May 23 at F. W. Gross Montessori Elementary School. More than 600 students, plus teachers, visited and listened the presentation. The third grade classes chose the Czech Republic as their country to study because of the number of Czechs in the community.

We extend our congratulations to Chapter Director Father Joseph Hybner for celebrating in May his 40th year in ordination to the priesthood. A motion was made to make a $250 donation in his name to the Czech American Priests Association.

19th Annual Czech Festival Festival Chairman Donald Dusek reported on the upcoming festival planning meeting on July 17 asking for more volunteers to fill the chairman positions. Co-Chairman Don Orsak passed out slips asking for names of volunteers so name tags can be prepared. This year's festival will be our 19th year and is set for September 28, 2003 at the Victoria Community Center, 10 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Father Joe Hybner will celebrate a Czech-English Mass at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral (televised). Food available includes a stew and sausage lunch, homemade chicken noodle soup; and kolaches.

Entertainment includes Shiner Hobo Band; Dujka Brothers, Red Ravens Battle Dance; children's games; auction; country store; pastry wheel; exhibits, arts/crafts; and Czech heritage museum. Czech Classes Conversational Czech Classes are held every third Monday at the Victoria Electric Coop. Adolf Motal is teaching the class. It was reported that an average of 20 to 25 attend these classes. Call Mary Wagner for more information 570-7393.
