A Tribute A To Old Glory The Rest of the Story ...

The United States observes Flag Day on Saturday, June 14. What better time than now for a little flag history refresher course!

We start with the basics: The seven red and six white stripes represent the 13 original colonies. The white stars on the field of blue field represent the union of our 50 states. The values symbolized by the official colors of the flag are Old Glory Red for bravery, Old Glory Blue for loyalty and white for strength.

So why do we call the flag "Old Glory?" I wondered about. After doing some checking, I learned that the name was coined by Captain Stephen Driver, a shipmaster of Salem, Massachusetts, in 1824.

As he was leaving on one of his many voyages aboard his ship, Charles Doggett, his mother and a group of Salem girls presented- him with a beautiful flag of 24 stars. As the banner opened to the ocean breeze for the first time, he exclaimed "Old Glory!"

But there's more to this story! As Paul Harvey would say, "And now, for the rest of the story . . . " In 1837, Captain Driver retired and settled in Nashville, taking with him his treasured flag from his sea-faring days.

On patriotic days, he displayed Old Glory proudly from a rope that extended from his house to a tree across the street. This routine went on for more than 20 years. By the time the Civil War erupted, most everyone in and around Nashville knew about Captain Driver's "Old Glory." When Tennessee seceded from the Union, Rebels were determined to find and destroy his flag.

Even after repeated, searches of the Captain's property, they were unable to find the banner.

On February 25, 1862, Union forces captured Nashville and raised a small American flag over the capitol.

Immediately, folks began asking Captain Driver if "Old Glory" still existed and if it did, could it be flown instead. Happy to have the accompaniment of soldiers, Captain Driver went home and began ripping at the seams of his bedcover. As the stitches holding the quilt-top to the batting unraveled, the onlookers peered inside and saw the flag!

Captain Driver returned with the soldiers to the capitol, climbed up to the tower and replaced the smaller banner with his beloved flag. The Sixth Ohio Regiment cheered and saluted. Later, they adopted the nickname "Old Glory" as their regimental designation, telling and re-telling the story of Captain Driver's devotion to the flag.

Shortly before his death, the old sea

captain placed a small bundle into the arms of his daughter. He said to her, "Mary Jane, this is my ship's flag, Old Glory. It has been my constant companion. I love it as a mother loves her child.

Cherish it as I have cherished it." The flag remained as a precious heirloom in the Driver family until 1922. It was then sent to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., where it is carefully preserved under glass. And that is the rest of the story!

Flag Raising Ceremony The SPJST invites all members and friends to join in paying tribute to the flag at the Flag Raising Ceremony — rain or shine — on Friday, June 13 at 9 a.m. in front of the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street in Temple. Activities will include a presentation of colors by the National Guard, a proclamation by Temple Mayor Bill Jones, II, patriotic songs and the reading of the winning youth Flag DAy essay or poem. Precinct Three Commissioner Leroy Schiller will lead the assembly in the singing of the National Anthem. Kolaches and coffee will follow the ceremony in the SPJST Home Office.

Remember Dad on Sunday Sunday, June 15, is Father's Day —a special day to thank and to remember our father's for their loving devotion.

Recently, I ran across this little verse that says it so well: You're My Hero My Hero is my dad; he's the quiet type, no marching bands, no media hype, But through my eyes it's plain to see, a hero, God has sent to me.

With gentle strength and quiet pride, all self concern is set aside; •To reach out to our fellow man, and be there with a helping hand.

Heroes are a rarity, a blessing to humanity.

With all they give and all they do, I'll bet the thing you never knew, My quiet hero has always been you.

Recipes wanted for new SPJST cookbook The SPJST Anniversary Cookbook was a big success! It is still a best seller and we have ordered a few more. Thanks to all who sent recipes.

At the last Supreme Lodge meeting, it was decided to do another cookbook. I need your help in making the new cookbook as successful as the last one.

We need recipes from all the cooks in the SPJST. You must be an SPJST member to submit a recipe. You may also submit as many recipes as you like; however, there is no guarantee that all recipes a member submits will be used.

Recipes may be submitted on a recipe collection form which has been provided to local lodges or on regular paper. These recipes need to be received at the Home Office by July 1, 2003. Please mail these recipes to: SPJST Home Office Attention: Cookbooks P.O. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 You may also email your recipes to lanitaa@spjst.com . Please include your address, phone number, and lodge number.

Any assistance you can provide us in collecting recipes will be appreciated. We want this cookbook to be as successful as the last one. We hope to have the new cookbook ready for sale by the first of next year.

Reprint of 100th Anniversary Cookbooks on the Way Two thousand copies of the SPJST Anniversary Cookbook have been ordered. The books, which include 1,100 recipes by SPJST members, are expected here at the Home Office in approximately a week and will be for

Since it came out in 1997, 24,000 copies of the SPJST Anniversary Cookbook have been sold. During its first year, profits of $17,000 from the sale of the book went to the Ronald McDonald House. Since then, book profits have been directed to the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

SPJST records 848 applications written through May in Outreach 2003 program Through the end of May, the SPJST had received 848 applicatons for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Outreach 2003 membership drive is to write at least 2,205 applications in 2003.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Outreach 2003 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for Members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through May 31, 2003.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 4, Hallettsville reports on May meeting Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, May 4, 2003 at the Legion Tap Room with Patsy Zabransky and Helen Zabransky as greeters.

At 2 p.m., President Joe Siptak called the meeting to order followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Vicky Zak read resolutions of sympathy for our departed members, Joe Ray Prasek, Henry Leon Koerth, and Ella Josephine Morizak.

Secretary Mary Ann Sustaita read the minutes to the last meeting and the correspondence.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky gave the financial report. Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Annie Vahalik reported on SPJST activities.

It was decided to present the Everyday Hero pins at Family Day in August. Annie told the members about Join Hands Day on June 21.

Philip Vahalik and Raymond Sustatita were appointed to check into a project for the adults and youth to participate in.

Smotek reported on visits to Stevens Convalescent Center and Hallettsville Rehab and Nursing Center.

Lodge Provides Assistance The members voted to contribute to the SPJST Home Office Texas Barbecue Lunch on May 22; give $50 to the SPJST Education and Nature Center; and to purchase the trophies for the players on the SPJST Coaches Pitch team—the Astros.

President Siptak will check with SPJST Library, Archives, and Museum (LAM) President Glenn Kaminsky to speak on the LAM at the next meeting.

In honor of Mother's Day, FAC Annie Vahalik recognized the oldest mother present as Kathryn Woytek and the youngest mother as Mary Ann Sustaita. Each received a prize.

Door prize 'winners were Marissa Sustaita, Joe Siptak, Patsy Zabransky, and Lillie Balusek.

On the sick list was Alfonse Holly.

Helen Zabransky, being the only one present with a birthday in April, May, or June, received the birthday cake baked by Viola Holly. It also being her birthday, the members sang her "Happy Birthday".

Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard honors mothers at May meeting Lodge

Dear Members, With much regret, this writer omitted something he had written in his rough draft which took place in the meeting of May 5, 2003 that was reported on in the May 28 issue of the Vestnik. This being that Brother Everett Kaminsky and wife, Connie, presented to all mothers present red carnations after a short dissertation by Fraternal Activities Coordinator Kaminsky.

Sister Connie reminded this writer of an old tradition of those persons, whose mothers were alive, wore red

carnations in memory of Mother's Day; and those persons, whose mothers had passed, wore white carnations for this same remembrance.

This writer wishes to thank Brother Kaminsky and his wife for having to carry the carnations the distance they had to carry them, for he knows that it is a hard drive of about 45 miles one way or better. He knows this very well for he had driven the distance from 1975 until 1990.

In his article for the local newspaper, he called them roses in error, and it was changed to carnations.

To the faithful: a notice for the July meeting will be coming in the next letter, and this writer remains . . .

38, Kovar reports on recent meetings Lodge

Lodge 38, Kovar held its monthly meeting April 14, 2003 at 7 p.m. at Kovar Hall.

The meeting was called to order by President Johnnie Janak. President Janak led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Afterwards was a prayer led by Secretary Joe J. Sulak.

The minutes of the March meeting were read by Secretary Joe J. Sulak and approved. The financial report was given by Treasurer Gearldeen Faust. Vice President Edwin Zimmerhazel have his reports.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Annie Tompkins gave her report. We continued with plans for our 2003 annual picnic. More planning was done with what we will need to do with the roof on the hall.

We received a card in memory of our friend, August Hajdik from Naomi and Norman Novasad.

May Meeting Report Lodge 38, Kovar held its monthly meeting on May 12, 2003 at 7 p.m. at Kovar Hall.

66, Waco reports on May meeting Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President George Pauling on May 18, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall, Elm Mott. There were 20 members and one guest, Jesse Pafford, at today's meeting. All officers were present with the exception of Secretary Dana McAdams and Guide Emma Ceska.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and Motto.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for one of our members, Darrell Gerik and for the brother of President Pauling — James Pauling.

May they rest in peace.

Due to the absence of Secretary Dana McAdams, Reporter Dorothy Veselka read the minutes of the April 13 meeting, and they were approved as read.

President Pauling had Dorothy Veselka read correspondence from State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Gladys Yates about the Golf Tournament which will be held at the Sammons Golf Course. She is asking for a contribution of $100. This donation can be returned to Gladys at the Home Office in Temple. Also Dorothy read a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar about the by-law change and Article 45 i. The youth club was issued a check regarding this article. Dorothy

also read a letter from Jerry Milan asking for donations to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum of either $150, $250 or $400 for five years. Dorothy also reported on a flyer from State FAC Gladys Yates asking for donations of either $50, $100, $150 or other to the Education and Nature Center. There was also a flyer concerning the retreat at Greene Family Center at Bruceville on May 24 and 25.

the Cheer and Condolence Committee Emma Ceska, Dorothy Veselka gave the report. Emma sent sympathy cards to Mr. and Mrs. George Pauling on the death of his brother James Pauling and to Mr. and Mrs. Alfonse Gerik on the death of their son, Darrell Gerik. Get well cards were sent to Rosemary Spence and Gene Gerlich.

Diana Engelke gave the bookkeeping report.

Scholarship Winners Announced

Youth Leader Debbie Galler, gave the youth report. There were four youth and three adults present today.

The youth went to Six Flags on May 10. There were a total of 14 who went. She reminded the youth of the Flag Day Contest. The camp tee-shirt order forms must be turned by May 30. Today, the youth will distribute gifts to the mothers and fathers for their day. The YAD cards were due today. The youth will practice on May 21, 28, June 4, 11, and 18. They will practice at Debbie's house at 6:30 p.m. There are two youth graduating from high school. The youth will have a graduating party. The youth had their elections of officers: President Douglas Galler; Vice President Kevin Galler, Treasurer Eric Wallace; Reporter Makayla Yates; and Flag Bearer Dakota Yates.

Gladys Yates installed the new youth officers. Debbie reported that the youth June meeting will be changed due to the LIT meeting on that day.

The youth first place door prize winner was Douglas Galler and the second place winner was Jodie McAdams. Douglas Galler brought the game.

Darlene Engelke read names of candidates for membership. Connie M. Davis wrote up Afred Gregory Montgomery, Patricia Ybara, Gene A. Davis, Domingo Ybara, and Connie M. Davis.; Brenda Busby wrote up Adlene Salter; Jerry Kucera wrote up Billy Ray Ramsey; Jeanette A. Brown purchased additional insurance.

Darlene Engelke will mail out the five 50-year pins to the following: Shirley Attaway, John Kovnovec, Rosemary Mynarcik, Alton Roskydal, Emogene Scott, and Barbara Stanislay.

President Pauling passed out the Lifetime Achiever Awards Plaques to Gladys Yates, Rosemary Spence, Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr., Margaret Gaidusek, and Mary Alice Langlotz.

John Engelke receive a four-year Service Plaque for being president 1996 - 1997 and 2000 - 2001.

Congratulations to all.

John Engelke asked that a donation be made to the Texas Barbecue Lunch event to go toward the Child Advocacy Center.

The youth presented beautiful hand-made key chains to the mothers and fathers on their day. Key chains went to Irene Mueller, Dorothy Gerlich, Bonnie Pruitt, Rosemary Spence, Debbie Galler, Diana Engelke, Gladys Yates, Janie Dujka, Dorothy Veselka, Darlene Engelke, Mary Alice Langlotz, LaNell Brem, John Engelke, Michael Galler, Louie Veselka, Gene Gerlich, Milan Dujka, and George Pauling. President Pauling announced the scholarship winners. Jodie McAdams received a 2003 Leadership Grant and also a 2001 District Merit Award of $1000 each. Amanda Neslony received a Leadership Grant for $1000. Milan Dujka, III received a General Freshman Scholarship for $1000. Nicole Pruitt received an Undergraduate Award for $1000, the Otto Hanus Scholarship. Gladys Yates will present the scholarship awards, at the students' schools.

President Pauling reported that the groundbreaking for the assisted living facility at Taylor would be held on May 24.

Chairman of the Board Milan Dujka had Secretary of the Board LaNell Brem read the minutes of the May 18 meeting.

FAC Mary Alice Langlotz welcomed State FAC Gladys Yates to our meeting today. She read her usual letter for May from Gladys. The State Horseshoe Tournament was held on May 17. Weldon and Michael Galler won first place. Lodge 66 had five teams out of 17 teams. Mary Alice reminded members of the June 13 Flag Day event which will be held at the SPJST Home Office. The Flag Essay winner will be announced at this event. She reminded everyone of the Texas Barbecue Lunch benefit which will be held at the Home Office on May 22 at 11 a.m. Plates will be for take out only for $5. Donations will go to the Children's Advocacy Center of Central Texas. Mary Alice read a note "Things That My Mother Taught Me." The author is unknown.

President Pauling announced that Georgia Pavlicek, Louise and Otto Matus are all residents of the West Rest Haven.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Michael Galler reported that today both Mother's Day and Father's Day are being celebrated with a meal of fried chicken, potato salad, green beanS, salad, tea with the desserts being brought by the members. For the June 15 meeting, members are asked to bring sandwiches.

The committee will furnish pickles, chips and dessert.

There were no May birthday celebrants present today. Because Darlene Engelke will be out of town at the June 15 meeting, she celebrated her birthday today.

The adult door prize winner was LaNell Brem. The 50-50 winner was Darlene Engelke. The Supreme Lodge donated some door prizes and they were won by Rosemary Spence—cup and George Paulingcap. Thanks, Gladys, for donating these prizes.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi reports on May meeting The dinner on May 25 was really good. We thank President Jerry Sijansky and his wife, Jill Sijansky, for doing most of the work with the help of a couple of members. Thanks a bunch for your work. For those who didn't come, you missed a good dinner!

The monthly meeting was held after the dinner with President Jerry Sijansky presiding. Treasurer larry Wilks and Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Jerry Elzner were absent. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Brother Victor Novosad.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to sister Ruth Marek whose birthday was on May 26.

Secretary Helen Pavelka read the minutes of the March and April meetings, and both were approved. She also read the correspondence.

A brief report on FAC activities was read by President Jerry Sijansky in absence of Jerry Elzner.

Lodge Gives to Red Cross The monthly donation was approved to be given to the local Red Cross unit for $100. The local Red Cross has helped many people in the past few months because of weather disasters in the area and the unit really needs more money.

Next Meeting June 15 The next meeting is on Sunday, June 15, 2003 at 2 p.m. After the meeting, there will be the usual svacina so members, bring goodies to share. Hopefully, more members will attend.

On May 4, 2003, the MareshStepan families reunion was held at the Bleiblerville-Nelsonville SPJST Lodge 201 hall in Bleiblerville, Texas. After the meeting, and much to everyone's surprise, an announcement was made inviting everyone to a wedding which was to be held outside on the west side of the hall under the trees.

Russell Hoff of Monaville, Texas and Robin Pruitt of Ganado, Texas exchanged their wedding vows within a circle formed by aunts, uncles, and a lot of cousins and friends. The birds singing in the trees provided the music for the wedding.

Reverend Steve Mize, brother in-law of the groom, performed the double-ring ceremony. Russell Hoff, a member of the lodge along with his parents, Betty and Herman Hoff, is the great-grandson of William Stepan and Joseph Maresh, founding members of the lodge. Many years of health and happiness were the wished foe the bride and groom.

The lodge had set up June 7 as an inside cleaning day, but all Saturdays of the month are rented so that work day was changed to Thursday evening, June 5 at 5 p.m All of us know Joel Towers has been great about keeping our lawn mowed and has done a fantastic job over the years, but he does need a break. Ken Carter has taken care of this chore for the month of May. Good job, Ken! Sarah and Doyle Oliver have volunteered for the month of June, and Ed Mount has the month of July. We need volunteers for the rest of the year whether it be by week or by month. We will have a sign up sheet at the work day, business meeting and dances.

In Memoriam In Memory of Leroy Levien Leroy Levien, 79, of Carmine died May 25, 2003 in Bryan.

Funeral services were held WefInesday, May 28 at 10 am. in Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine with burial in the Carmine Cemetery. The Reverend Paul Bohot officiated.

Born January 12, 1924 in Woodsboro, he was the son of Alfred W. and Adele (Ander) Levien. He married Lucille Ponfick in Carmine June 22, 1947. He married his second wife, Ora Lee (Rohde) Wickel April 10, 1989. He served his country in the Naval Air Force. He ran a cafe in Carmine from 1946-1965. He also was a temporary clerk for the Carmine Post Office and worked for Carmine State Bank where he retired as vice president in 1991. He was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Carmine, Cedar Creek Schuetzen Verein, the American Legion Post 338, the Gun and Rod Club, Carmine Volunteer Fire Department, Sons of Hermann Lodge 151, a- charter member of the Carmine Lions Club, past president of the Carmine Chamber of Commerce and Carmine Water Supply, past director of. Fayette County Wildlife Council, a current director of Carmine State Bank, and treasurer of SPJST Lodge 179, Warrenton.

Survivors include his wife, Ora Lee Levien of Carmine; stepdaughters and stepson in-law, Melba and Randy Zingelmann of Carmine and Melissa Wicket of Carmine; stepgranddaughters, Brandy Zingelmann of Carmine and fiance, Matt Swisher and Bridgette and J.P. Ingram of Brenham;

sister, Virginia Eichhorn of Round Top; and brother and sister in-law, Cordell and Corine Levien of Round Top. Levien was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; two brothers; and a sister.

Edwin McLelland "Absent from the body, but present with the Lord" is Edwin "Bubba" McLelland, 79, of Angleton who passed away at the Angleton/Danbury Hospital on Wednesday, April 30, 2003. Visitation took place at the Palms Funeral Home in Angleton on Sunday, May 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service was conducted by Pastor Alan Trafford at the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Jackson on Monday, May 5 at 11 a.m. DavisGreenlawn Me6morial Park in Rosenberg was the place of interment at 3 p.m. Serving as pallbearers were nieces and nephews, Bethany Guthmann, Jan King, Alan Schroeder, Ray Horky, Matt Kopecky, David Pesak, Joseph Pesak, Jr., and John Paul Pesak. Bubba's ex-machinists friends and co-workers served as hon orary pallbearers, Jackie Skipper, Mike.W.311ace, Joe Landry, David Pousson, G.L. Pousson, Jimmie Hilton, J.J. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; son, Mark; "adopted" son, Frank Mikulastik; brother and wife, Jack and Ann McLelland; aunt, Valasta Howe; nieces and nephews, Bill Baker, Jan King, Diane Outzs, and Alan Roy, and David Schroeder; and very special family friend, Sally Mikulastik.

Son of Edwin and Julia Howe McLelland, Edwin was born in Sealy, Texas, September 4, 1923 to a family which included sisters, Anita and Gwen, and brother, Jack. Losing his parents at an early age, he and his sisters and brother were reared in Kaufman by his maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Otto Howe of Kaufman and Needville. Upon being graduated from Kaufman High School, Bubba was drafted into the 475th Infantry. Shortly thereafter, he qualified for the Air Force and underwent training. World War II conditions, worsened, and Bubba was transferred back to the 475th. During this time, he fought under the command of a stellar force, the well-known Merrill's Marauders, in the ChinaBurma-India campaigns. Bubba was awarded American and Asiatic Pacific Theaters of War Ribbons, combat Infantry Badge, Distinguished Unit Badge, Victory Medal, and Presidential Citation.

After the war, he was employed by Dow Chemical in Freeport, where he because a machinist, training innumerable apprentices during his 47-year tenure. He married Sylvia Pesak McLelland. They have a son, Mark McLelland.

Bubba was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lake Jackson; Merrill's Marauders Association, International Association of Machinists 128; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10378; Greenwood Gun Club; and SPJST Lodge 139, Danbury.

—SPJSTworked with the Boy Scouts, soccer clubs, and the high school marching and jazz bands in Angleton. Bubba really loved mankind — especially children and his country. The stars and stripes were flown proudly and frequently on a special flagpole in the family's front yard.

Family members, friends, and neighbors played an important role in his life. He enjoyed them and when the moment called for it, he remembered them very willingly and generously.

Significant in his life was the lathe.

Oh, how he could make it hum and create! Vegetable and flower gardening were yet another source of pride with him as he grew, gathered, enjoyed, and gave in abundance.

Traveling was a delight. He was enthusiastic, open, unhurried, and enjoyed exploring different return routs. Walking, bicycling, swimming, volley-balling, dancing, spectator sports, and reading ranked high on his list. And, a more capable "Mr. Fix-it" one would be hard put to find. Indeed, he will be remembered and missed, sorely, in so many ways.

"His feet may have left our homes, but not our hearts."

Will he leave an afterglow? Most emphatically, yes!

Afterglow The day died in a flood of crimson flame That bathed the hills in beauty richly rare, And all the world bowed down and I, too, came to stand in wonder and to worship there.

Youth Letters Section Summer schedule heats up District Two schedule As the temperature outside keeps rising, District Two activities are increasing in pace. Camp, Youth Achievement Day (YAD), and summer outings abound in the SPJST, and I hope you have made plans to participate in all of them. Following is a list of the district's functions and deadlines. Please make note of them and make sure you turn in everything in a timely manner. Let's make this a funfilled summer for all of our members.

June 13 to 15, 2003 Leaders-in-Training Workshop, Camp Lone Star, LaGrange June 22, 2003 District Two Swim Party, The Summit Pool (Old Racquet Club, Temple from 6 to 8 p.m. This is located off of Loop 363 behind Market Street Cafe. District Six Camp will be the weekend, of June 27-29 at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. I ask that all campers arrive on Friday at 3:15 p.m. If you need to arrive later, please let me know that you will be doing so.

Items you will need to bring are bed sheets, a pillow, bath towels, clothes, bathing suit, beach towel, sunscreen, toiletries, tennis shoes, and a flash light. With this year being the 50th anniversary of the SPJST youth program, the camp theme will be the '50s, so please bring your best '50s costume for the party Saturday night.

We will be departing from camp Sunday at 10 a.m. so please make sure your transportation home arrives by then.

Please do not bring coolers with food or drinks in them. They are not allowed in the cabins and we will have plenty of refreshments provided.

I hope that everyone is looking forward to a fun-filled weekend, I know that I am. See you on June 27.

Dear Vestnik Readers: We had our monthly meeting on May 4, 2003. We had a good meeting.

Our new officers were elected, and we also elected Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Sebesta as our new Honorary Grandparents. They are the grandparents of Deanna and Cullen Hairrell.

We will be participating at Snookfest on June 7, 2003. We will have a free water booth and a couple of game booths. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Family Fun Day June 29 Also in June, we will have the annual Family Fun Day Barbecue Dinner on Sunday, June 29, 2003.

The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A silent auction will be held and the youth club will be having a cake walk. Erin Hattemer Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club welcomes its newest member, Erin Hattemer, age 13. Her parents are Mark and Karen Hattemer. She has two sisters, Kori and Rachel.

Erin enjoys attending church, participating in sports, reading, and being on the computer.

She attends Rogers Middle School where she is in the seventh grade. In school, Erin participates in athletics, UIL, clubs, Honor Society and Student Council.

Dear Readers, The June 1 meeting of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club was called to order at 3 p.m by Kyle Skrabanek.

Logan Jones and Adam Ofczarzak led the Pledge of Allegiance and the SPJST Youth Club Motto.

The register was read. Present were 24 members, two guests and 13 adults. Guests were Jacob Henson and Kelly Ihlenfeldt.

The minutes were approved and Lacy Jones gave the treasurer's report.

This month's social will be a pool party at the Caldwell Swimming Pool on July 6 at 6 p.m.

Our Youth Leader Susan Skrabanek talked about the swimming party and Youth Achievement Day. Assistant Youth Leader Holly Narro gave instructions about the scrapbook.

For dinner, youth members enjoyed eating hot dogs and potato chips for dinner served by Susan Skrabanek.

Dessert was brought by Chandler Malazzo and drinks were provided by Jackie Paul.

Celebrating a birthday this month is Lucus Schoppe who will be 14.

Door prizes were won by Tyler Sander, Kara Ihlenfeldt, Adam Ofczarzak, Meagan Blum, and Colby and Nick Havemann. The door prizes were brought by the Havemanns.

Dear Members and Friends, If you are in the market for a new game to play on Nintendo Game Cube, then I would recommend, Wave Race. It's a great game and kinda hard. You have to hold a lot of buttons down at the same time Even so, it's a lot of fun. This game is about racing on jet skis. There are many different events you can do, too-like the championship, multi-player, and stunt mode.

It's a lot of fun to play so try it. I bet you'll like it.

The monthly meeting of Lodge 30, Taiton was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 18, 2003 at Taiton Community Center. The Pledge of Allegiance and motto were led by Chet Dluhos. In attendance were 19 members and nine adults.

Mrs. Bubela handed out a calendar of events for District Six in 2003. It included the following: LIT RetreatJune 13 to 15; Camp-June 27 to 29; District Youth Achievement Day (YAD) July 20; District Tour July 27; and State YAD-August 9.

New Officers We then had officers elected. for 2003. Dear Readers, On Friday May 30, the Junior Youth Club of Lodge 84, Dallas met at Braum's Ice Cream Parlor for our May meeting. After the Pledge of Allegiance was said, we discussed old and new business and listened to the committee reports.

We then held the election of offi cers. I have sent a picture of the new officers with this letter.

We continue to practice for District Three Youth Achievement Day which is going to be held on Sunday, June 22 in Ennis at Lodge 25. I hope to see you all there.

junior youth reports on May meeting The May 30, 2003 meeting of SPJST Lodge 84, Junior Youth Club (JYC) was called to order at 6:45 p.m.

by President Desiree Christman.

Ten members and six adults-were led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Elisabeth Cowan.

Minutes from April's meeting were read by Ashley Andreason.

Alex Andreason, our Treasurer, reported that $8.75 was collected at our last meeting, bringing our current balance to $19.34.

The Sunshine Committee reported no birthdays for May, and no other cards were sent.

Our social, along with our meeting, was held at Braum's Ice Cream Store on Northwest Highway and 1635. We had ice cream and played on the playground.

Old business included our Easter egg hunt in March, group talent, and beseda practices for our upcoming Youth Achievement Day (YAD), and

the District Three Spring Meeting held April 27 in Ennis at which Christmas Card Design Contest entries were to be submitted.

New business included the election Officers for 2003 - 2004. We will be making ice cream Friday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m. to sell at Homecoming on Sunday, June 1 at Lodge 88. We also decided to do a split-the-pot prize drawing on Sunday.

All the Leaders-in-Training (LIT) from Lodge 88 who will be attending LIT camp need to pack lightly and meet at Lodge 88 at 3 p.m. District Five Youth Achievement Day (YAD) is Sunday, June 29 at Lodge 88. Make sure you turn in your YAD cards!

Lidice Remembered in Pictorial Display SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) Curator Dorothy Pechal, left, and SPJST Fraternal Department Secretary Sandra Dubcak, view pictorial display dedicated to the memory of the Czech village of Lidice. Sixty-one years ago — on June 10, 1942 — Nazis retaliating the assassination of a top SS official destroyed the Czech village of Lidice. It was Adolph Hitler's intent to make an example of the little town by wiping it off the face of the earth. That didn't happen. People all over the world heard the story and in time the name Lidice became symbolic of the tyrannical forces of the Nazi regime. Today, a rose garden grows where the town once stood and the Czechs have built a town on the heights above it. Life goes on. Lidice was not allowed to die. The Lidice display is one of many interesting collections on display at the SPJST LAM in Temple.
