SPJST LAM dedicates reading room in memory of Svatava Jakobson The Svatava P. Jakobson Reading Room, the newest addition to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum was dedicated at a special ceremony in Temple, Texas on Sunday afternoon, March 9. The SPJST LAM is located at the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street. The reading room honors Svatava P. Jakobson, distinguished educator and musicologist, who died in September 2000. The room is fitted with furnishings, art, artifacts, and memorabilia from Professor Jakobson's home in Austin and will serve as a research area for scholars working with the LAM's collection. Among the special guests in attendance at the dedication ceremony were Ms. Jakobson's nephew, Michal Basch and his wife, Marcela, of the Svatava Jakobson Czech Republic. A Home With Character From 1968 to 1992, Ms. Jakobson made her home in a limestone cottage on River Hills Road outside Austin in

the Texas Hill Country. The house, completely renovated by Jakobson, had a personality that was distinctly hers. It was filled with furnishings, folk art, and artifacts from around the world, but particularly from her beloved Czechoslovakia. The house, with its garden, became the scene of intellectual and social gatherings for Dr. Jakobson's colleagues, students, new Texas acquaintances, and Czech friends from abroad. An Active Life Ms. Jakobson was professor of Czech studies at the University of Texas at Austin for 11 years from 1968 to 1979. After her retirement as professor emeritus, she continued to mentor students of Czech language, literature, and culture. During her 25 years in Texas, Professor Jakobson was an inspiration to academics interested in Czech subjects as well as to Texas-Czechs with an interest in cultural preservation. Born in Vienna, Austria, March 19, 1908, Svatava was an avid lifelong collector of books, art, and music of particular interest were folk art and folk music. Early on, these interests led to her graduate work at Charles University in Prague that culminated in a dissertation on Moravian folk (Continued on page 3.)
