A Price to Pay On our way home from Valley Mills last Saturday night, my family passed through President Bush's home base of Crawford, Texas. It was around 8 p.m., so we decided to drop in at the local diner for cheeseburgers.

Besides the wait staff, the only other people in the cafe were a German television crew wanting to talk to someone from the community about the war in Iraq. The fact that we lived east of Temple was close enough for them.

The interview lasted all of five minutes. I suppose it went okay; however, when it was all over, I thought of all kinds of insightful things I could have said, namely that war - like peace - remains an inescapable reality, even in this enlightened day and age. In its aftermath, I hope and pray that the world may achieve a peace and political climate more settling than that which preceded it.

Seldom in life does one get something of value for nothing. There is a price to pay.

As fraternalists, we share an obligation and duty to each other and our fellow man. We have the power and the ability to make things better. That also takes action. Wishing fox something good to happen in your lodge isn't a bad thing; however, it's no substitute for action. Actions speak louder than words and action gets things done.

Expression of Sympathy Prior to going to press, we were saddened to learn that Honorary District One Director Brother Andrew Vavra, 77, of Bryan passed away on Saturday, March 22. Brother Vavra, who's 10-year tenure preceded that of present District One Director Donnie Victorick, was born in Burleson County and lived in Bryan for many years. He was a retired truck driver and an army veteran of World War II. Brother Vavra, who previously served as president of Lodge 17, New Tabor was most recently a member of Lodge 189, Andrew Vavra Bryan - College Station.

Funeral services for Brother Vavra were on Monday, March 24 in Bryan.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Brother Vavra and his friends. Brother Vavra is survived by his wife, Lola, of Bryan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew J. Jr. and Pat Vavra and Alvin and Sally Vavra, all of Houston; two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara and Tom Miller of College Station and Florence Wilder of Bryan; a sister, Lillian Barta of San Antonio; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

SPJST writes 297 applications through February of Outreach 2003 program Through the end of February, the SPJST had received 297 applicatons for insurance and annuity certificates.

The goal of the Outreach 2003 membership drive is to write at least 2,205 applications in 2003.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Outreach 2003 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Chi), Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota.

The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through February 28, 2003.

The Fayetteville County Czech Heritage Society and Fayetteville SPJST Lodge 1, will have their annual combined picnic at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill (on the south side of Highway 159 about three and one half miles east of Fayetteville) on Sunday, April 6, 2003 starting at 11 a.m.—rain or shine. Members are asked to bring a covered dish—vegetable or meat— and dessert. Everything else will be provided.

We hope to have a great turnout for this event this year so bring guests, as they are always welcome. Also, bring your lawn chairs and fishing gear.

Dear Readers, Hi! In the absence of our President, Brother Johnnie Krizan, our First Vice President, Brother Ray Perez, called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. on March 9, 2003. Bracy Craig led us all in the Pledge of Allegiance, and she also gave our motto.

There was a moment of silence for all departed members, especially our departed member, Sister Marie Margulieux. Our condolences to her family. Sister Georgie Soukup, Guide, gave her report of 29 members present at this meeting.

Brother Ray called upon Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Secretary, for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. They were approved as read.

The Treasurer's report was given by Sister Peggy Dobecka. It was approved as given.

Upcoming Activities Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary, gave his report of three new members for February. There were two adults and one juvenile, which were approved. Welcome to our lodge. Thanks to Sales Representatives, Brothers Johnnie Krizan and Jerry Kucera. Brother George also gave his bookings for the next month with a social on April 4, and no social on April 18 which is Good Friday. He also reported that our Easter party with egg hunt would be held on Sunday, April 6 starting with our meeting at 2 p.m. I just happened to notice that the 6th is the first

Brother George Straten also gave his trustee's report. Their meeting was held on Friday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. There were 17 members present with election of new officers for the year 2003. The officers are Chairman Brother George Straten; First CoChairman Brother Ray Perez; Second Co-chairman Brother Milton Peterson; Secretary Sister Peggy Dobecka; and Treasurer Brother Johnnie Krizan.

It was also reported that our "42" domino tournament will be Saturday, March 22 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood with barbecue and all the trimmings being served. The ladies of the lodge are to bring desserts for this meal. It was also reported that our Easter party on Sunday, April 6 will be serving fried chicken and sausage with all the trimmings. Ladies are to bring desserts for this meal.

Youth Club Report Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, gave the youth report. She reported that the youth did Valentines and baked cookies for the Bellmead Rehab on February 7. She also reported that there are 51 active members in the youth club now with Traci Dobecka and Brooke Craig receiving certificates for recruiting members.

Sister Peggy also reported that State Camp in Bruceville-Eddy will be coming up March 28 - 30 and is asking our mother lodge to help support some of the youth who may want to attend. It was unanimously approved to help out with funds of $50 for each child needing it. She also reported that the youth would do a short program at our Easter party meeting, and they would be having an egg hunt, inviting the adults to also hunt eggs.

Sister Peggy presented awards and certificates to some of her youth. A certificate and medal were presented to Traci Dobecka and Brooke Craig.

Medals were then presented to Michael Ann Moore, Lakn Dieterich, Whitney Dobecka, and Christi Sparkman. Those not present to receive their medals were Brittany Angelo and Courtney Halbert.

Congratulations to all these youth.

Cheer and Condolences We miss Sister Hattie Kaska since she gave up her position as Sunshine Committee chairman. Sister Stella Perez has been taking her place until someone else takes it over. Sister Stella reported sending a thinking of you card to Brother Al Soukup. He went to Hillcrest to receive his new

6/VkSTNIK—Wednesday, March 26, 2003 pacemaker to keep Al running for another seven to ten years. We wanted to let him know that we still loved him. Now, he has a "show and tell" item that he probably goes around with (his old pacemaker).

Sister Stella also reported sending a get well card to Sonyia Lucien and children. They were in an accident in West. We hope they are all up and running about now. Sympathy cards were sent to Robert and Irene Schiemenz and Mary Karlik, upon the death of David Wayne Haddix.

Our deepest sympathy to all of David's family and his friends.

Easter Fun Planned Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Hykel, gave her report regarding the upcoming domino tournament. She also reported that the workers for Sunday, April 6 to show up at 8 a.m. for the Easter party meal that day. She also asked the ladies to furnish the desserts. Sister Barbara also mentioned that the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive was still on till March 31. She reported a KJT Tarok Tournament at St. Joseph's Hall in West on April 5.

The Lifetime Achiever's Award committee met and selected five individuals to receive this award for the year 2002. Those selected were Sisters Lydia Dobecka, Peggy Dobecka, Stella Perez, Georgie Soukup, and Hattie Kaska. These awards will be presented at our District Three Spring Meeting on April 27 at Ennis, Texas.

Those in attendance with March birthdays were Brothers Jerry Kucera and Alvin Pavlas, and Sister Mary Marek. A "Happy Birthday" to these folks and to all with a March birthday.

The meeting was adjourned, and we enjoyed a delicious meal of ham and other trimmings prepared by Sisters Lucille Sulak and Evelyn Bezdek and Brother Ernest Bezdek.

Thanks a bunch for preparing this meal for everyone.

Next Meeting April 6 Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. followed by the SPJST, Inc. annual meeting.

15, Buckholts reports on March meeting Lodge

The March meeting was sparsely attended what with members either ill or otherwise incapacitated. Johnnie and Clara Balusek were absent because Johnnie has been battling— off and on—a severe ear infection for months. He is being treated at the V.A. Hospital in Temple, but as of

new, it is a draw who is winning— Johnnie or the infection. We are in hopes that as dry warm weather stabilizes, Johnnie will continue to improve and will once again rejoin us.

First and foremost, I must correct, where in my last report, it stated that Mr. Timothy L. Zierke who presented our lodge the two new flags is the present, not past, Post Commander of VFW Post 1820, Temple, Texas. My sincere apologies to Mr. Zierke for such an error.

Plans were made to attend the District Two Spring Meeting and since held at Lodge 24, Cyclone where awards were made to several of our members. The first award was made to Charlsie Svetlik for having served for 40 years as a lodge officer.

Lifetime Achiever awards were presented to Johnnie Balusek, Hilda Burtis, Lillie Zajicek, and Frank Tomascik. Since Johnnie was unable to attend, the award was accepted for him by his brother, Dan Balusek of Lodge 47, Seaton and who also stood in for Johnnie during the picture-taking session.

Also attending the meeting were my daughters, Mary Irene and Marguerite of Dallas, but members of Lodge 15, as well as my grandson, Thomas Weatherford, member of Lodge 84, Dallas. They came purposely to see me receive my award, but I forgot to warn them that as these meetings go, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you get to the prince (my award). As soon as the long awaited event was over, they all three lit out for Dallas with a parting shot, "you owe us one."

Since then, I've received, a farmrelated, very painful back injury. The doctor gave me a medication consisting of magnesium which proved completely ineffective.. That brought to mind a question I am asking you: Do you know the difference between amnesia and magnesia? Answer: With amnesia, you don't know where you are going, but with magnesia, you do.

My parting shot for this month is a reminder that the April meeting will be after Daylight Savings Time begins.

32, Victoria reports on March meeting Lodge

President Franklin Elles opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for the departed.

Lois Elles read a note of thanks from Frank Huvar for our lodge dona tion to his wife's memorial fund.

Lois. Elles talked about and how she thanked our members selecting her to receive the Fraternalist of the Year award.

The dance we had last month at Inez Hall turned out a great attendance. We sold 399 tickets at the door. Over all, we came out good.

President Franklin Elles reminded us of the District Six Meeting will be held at Moravia on Sunday, March 23.

The lodge members voted to donate door prizes for the District Six Spring Meeting.

Valeria Motal reported on the members who were ill this past month. Get well soon, members.

Lodge 47, Seaton reports on March meeting Dear Brothers and Sisters, The March 4, 2003 meeting of Lodge 47, Seaton was called to order

by President Edwin Pechal at 2 p.m.

Flag Bearers were Colby Michalewicz and Chase O'Brien. They brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of our deceased member, Velma Culpepper who passed away recently.

Those who were mentioned as being ill were Jerome Greger and Johnie L. Vanicek. Lillian Hanusch is now at her home and recovering after the car accident.

Secretary Adeline Kohutek read the roll call of officers, trustees, and sales representatives.

New members accepted were Dorothy Hampton, Cynthia Denise Hutka, Glenn Allen Hutka, Haylynn Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lanita M. Anglin, and Cynthia Denise Hutka.

Thank you all for choosing our lodge for your membership. Come to the meetings and other activities.

Correspondence received included a thank you card from the Miladie Malcik family for flowers sent to her funeral service; from the District Two Youth Club for use of the hall for the lock-in; and from the American Cancer Society for the memorial sent to thein; also services.

Board minutes were read by Board Secretary Edwin Vasicek.

President Pechal thanked all who helped in any way with the incentive banquet held at our lodge on February 22 and with the fund raiser on March 1. Thanks to those who brought silent auction items, to the bidders, and to all who attended the event. Edwin Vasicek and Beth Rabroker also thanked these members and friends.

The chairpersons gave their respective reports and treasurer Gladys Marek gave her report of income and expenses.

Wednesday, March 26, 2003—VESTNIK/7 present and Julia Zavodny was a visitor. The youth club did the cleaning of the silverware after the banquet with Pam Morris and Pat Rabroker also helping. They did a right good job.

They have plans of rock climbing plus movies on April 13.

The activities planned at Lodge 47 will be the next meeting on Sunday, April 6, 2003 at 2 p.m. with the awarding of the 50-year pins, pictures taken of these and other members attending the meeting, the youth attending, Easter egg hunt for the smaller ones, and a scavenger hunt for others.

Everyone, please attend as these pictures will be featured in the souvenir booklet for the 100th anniversary. You will be pictured in the booklet and oth-' ers will know that you were there when they purchase the booklet.

President Harold Rohde called the meeting to order of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland on March 2, 2003 at 4 p.m. A membership of 50-plus stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. All officers were present except for our Fraternal Activities Coordinator Melissa Vrabel who had given birth to a six pound, 10 ounce son, Ronald W. Vrabel, II. Congratulations, mom, Melissa and dad, Ronald!

Secretary Linda Hill read the minutes of the February meeting. They were approved as read. Treasurer Glen Latham gave a report of the committees, and they were fine.

50-Year Member Honored Today, we were to honor 12 50-year members. Only one, James Dusek, was present. Brother Jim King, District Two State Field Representative, presented Mr. Dusek with the 50-year pin. Congratulations, James!

On the ailing list was Joe Sumbera.

81, Needville reports on March meeting Lodge

On March 16, 2003, the SPJST Lodge 81 of Needville, met for its monthly social and meeting. At 12 p.m., a prayer of thanks was given before our hamburger meal, and we all enjoyed hamburgers, chips, dips, and desserts. Thanks to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready in the kitchen. A big thanks goes to the hamburger patty cookers. Also, thanks to everyone else who brought all of the chips, dips, and desserts. Everything was delicious!

At 1 p.m., President Vincent Newman opened the meeting. Gilbert Walzel led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call. We had a moment of silence for departed members Louise Jeske, Arthur Dannhaus, and Ed Walcek. We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of these members. Added to our sick list is Emil Straznicky, who's recovering from a broken hip. Watch out for those cows! Also added to the sick list are Milton Blinka and John Kolaja. We're all wishing you a speedy recovery.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall, read her report. There was a minor correction. Next, Treasurer Benita Walzel read her report. They were approved as read. Then, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel, read his report. It was also approved as read.

Under old business, President Vincent Newman announced that he has all the scholarship information on a computer disk now and should be easy to access in the future.

LAM Update Under new business, to our delight, Glenn and Jeanette Kaminsky from District Six came to visit us. Glenn talked to us about the Library Archives Museum (LAM), and

answered questions from our mem bers. Thanks for being so informative.

We hope you visit us again soon. Also under new business, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel made a motion to send money for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund. The motion was seconded and passed. He also announced that one of the mercury vapor lights was not working properly. President Vincent Newman said he would look into repairing it.

Also, Gilbert Walzel said there was a leak over the men's bathroom, and Ed and Eddie Kuban said they would repair that. We also talked about purchasing a few ceiling tiles to replace the ones that need to be replaced.

It is very important that everyone remember that our normal monthly meeting will be held on April 13 since Easter falls on the third Sunday.

Under other business, it- was discussed that Benita Walzel will get the corsages and boutonnieres needed for the 50-year members. We hope to see some of you at the April meeting.

Our door prize winners for this month were Darlene Blinka, Eddie Kuban, Jeanette Barnes, and Gilbert Walzel. Benita Walzel won a cassette tape of Czech singers given by Glenn and Jeanette Kaminsky. Congratulations to these winners!

84, Dallas free dance set for April 6 Lodge

Dear Members, Our February meeting was short, but we had several members present who we had not seen lately. President Yeager introduced those attending for the first time and all of the officers.

She also introduced the sales representatives who were present and thanked them for the hard work, the great job this year, and being responsible for Lodge 84 winning the Gold Award—

Sisters Olson, Hughes, and Bessie Petr and Brothers Yeager and Jarma.

Secretary Hughes read the names of these responsible and the list of members they wrote, certificates for.

Several new members were written up

by Brother Emil Petr before his death.

No doubt, Emil would have been very excited that the Gold Award was won

by Lodge 84.

District Three State Field Representative, Brother Jerry Kucera representing the Supreme Lodge, initiated the new members. We thank him very much. We were honored also by the presence of District Three Director Johnnie Krizan. Members always welcome him which was the case Monday—even if he was a little late.

A motion was made and passed to postpone reading of the minutes of the last meeting and other items to be discussed until our meeting March 17.

However, Youth Leader Bessie Petr gave a report on the youth's visit to the St. Joseph's Rest Home entertaining the guests present with dances by the Junior Youth Club and a patriotic reading by the teens led by Sister Lynn Olds. Fifty red carnations were distributed to the guests which delighted everyone.

The dinner that was served at 7 p.m. was delicious and Sister Yeager thanked all who worked so hard to make it so. Pictures were taken after the meeting so many of you will enjoy seeing the happy group that stayed to be fraternal with each other.

Our 50-year members and others will be honored. Try to come.

In closing, we congratulate Sister Anne Cowan on becoming a youth leader for the Junior Youth Club with Sister Jennifer Andreason always planning items to interest them.

87, Temple reports on March meeting Lodge

On March 11, 2003, the meeting began with a taco dinner given by the youth club and Youth Leader Pam Capps. The meeting was then called to order at 7:35 p.m. by President Dan Kacir. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence. The minutes from the February meeting were presented by Vice President Emma Perry. The minutes were accepted.

Treasurer Daryl Entrop gave our monthly expense report. On a motion

by Daryl Entrop and seconded by Ed Reisner, the members were accepted for membership.

Youth Leader Pam Capps gave her report on our youth club activities to be announced at a later date.

Next Meeting April 8 The next meeting will be April 8, 2003, and we will be having a covered dish dinner for Easter.

Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Dear Members, The District Five Spring Meeting on March 2, 2003 at Pasadena Lodge 172 was well attended. The catered dinner was good, and everyone enjoyed the fellowship.

At our March lodge meeting Marian Kadlecek, Dorothy Pflughaupt, and Linda Wehring were congratulated and received checks for making their quotas in 2002.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales announced that the annual Easter party would be on Saturday, April 12, beginning at 2 p.m. These parties are always fun so bring your children and grandchildren. Of course, they love it.

On Sunday, April 13, the Czech Heritage Society will have its Spring Festival. The youth of our lodge will serve their good homemade ice cream.

There will also be a cake walk.

Vice President Dorothy Pflughaupt was pleased to announce that donations for the food pantries are coming in real well each month. Our members love to help where needed.

Kelsie Huble, 16, daughter of Vicci and David Huble and oldest granddaughter of Helen and King Hegwood, is a student at Klein Forest High School. She is in the FFA for the third year and is an officer. In the recent Houston Fat Stock Show, she competed in the calf scramble and caught a calf. Isn't that great? She will now buy a calf and hopes to enter it in the show next year.

We will have only two AARP drivers courses this year. The first is Wednesday and Thursday, May 7 and 8, and the second is Monday and Tuesday, August 25 and 26. The fee is only $10 per person, and your certificate of completion reduces your insurance.

Our members who have been in the hospital are Ed Miculka, Royal Warnasch, Louis Hanus, and Louise Kadlecek. Evelyn Elzner Kubin is in a rehab center. Get well wishes go out to all of these members.

Our Saturday night dances in April are as follows: April 5—Gus Lindemann, Big Band Music; Dress Code April 12—Jodie Mikula, Polka and Variety Music April 19—Bobby Jones, Polka and Variety Music You all come! Dancing is a wonderful way to exercise.

88, Houston reports on March meeting Lodge

President Patricia Bruce opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. We were led in prayer by Sydney Jurchak. We then recited the Lord's Prayer.

The Pledge of Allegiance was

recited and our recording secretary read the names of deceased members who were Lynda Garisson, Henry Dvorak, and Donald Seelhorst. A moment of silence was held in their memory.

Roll call of officers was read. All officers were present with the exception of Roberta Johnson. The minutes of February 10, 2003 were read and approved.

In the absence of Secretary/ Treasurer Roberta Johnson, Clara Broz read the profit and loss statement for February 2003.

Recording Secretary Flo Orsag read a letter from Jan Porter of the Salvation Army thanking the lodge for the use of the SPJST Lodge for the 2002 volunteer appreciation dinner.

Officers' Reports President Patricia Bruce reported that we had our district meeting and we had 19 present from our lodge.

We will have an executive board meeting on March 24, 2003 at 7:30 p.m.

First Vice President Dorothy Pflughaupt reported that the canned goods received this evening will go to St. Vincent DePaul Church. We are still collecting eyeglasses and don't forget to turn in your fraternal hours on the forms provided.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales reported that the youth club went to the Lexington Nursing Home on Saturday, February 15. State camp will be on March 28 through the 30.

Saturday, April 12 is the Easter party at 2 p.m. Please bring your children and grandchildren.

Sergeant-at-Arms Johnny Broz read a few words of prosperity. Also he donated the money from the aluminum cans to the youth.

Committee Reports Entertainment Chairman Betty Theiss reviewed the future dances and invited everyone to come.

Social Night Chairman J. R. Bruce would like to meet with his committee toni4ht following this meeting.

Chairman of the Board Cleburn Lincke reported that the entrance arch is still in need of repair. If you know of someone who does this kind of work please let him know. The following are the bingo donations suggested by the committee. The Make A Wish Foundation - $500; the Memorial Hermann Hospice - $500; Adult Diabetes Foundation $500; M.D. Anderson Hospital $500; the Salvation Army $500; Ronald McDonald House $500; and New Hope Foundation $500, for a total of $3,500. He made this in the form of a motion, seconded by Johnny Broz.

Motion carried. The president asked that if anyone could go to these places to give the donation check, to please let her know, and we will get credit for this.

Worker's Party was reported on by Carol Liebscher. The party is to be on March 16 from 3 to 8 p.m.

Birthday Club President Marie Stayton was not present. Lowrina Lindemann reported for her. The Birthday Club is having meat loaf this Wednesday with covered dishes.

Scholarship Chairman Carol Havemann reported that the scholar-

ship committee will make their recommendations at the April'meeting.

Choral Club President Fred Buri reported they are rehearsing and needs singers, both Czech and English.

District Officers Reports District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt reported that the AARP classes will be on May 7 and 8, and on August 25 and 26. This will reduce your insurance approximately 10 percent and the cost is $10 each.

There must be at least 14 people in the class before they will give it. He reported that at the awards banquet at least two from each lodge in District Five was in attendance.

Reading of names of applicants and transfers: Helen Hegwood had three applicants who were Taryn Olson, Jessica Smith, and Autumn Smith. Vincent Hegwood had one— Payton Luna. These applicants were voted into membership.

Sick members - Ed Miculka went home from the hospital yesterday, Royal Warnasch had two stints put in his arteries, but is doing fine. Louise Kadlecek had surgery today and is doing well. Evelyn Elsner Kubin is in Heights Rehabilitation Hospital.

New Business Helen Hegwood presented President Bruce with a check in the amount of $6,000 for achieving the Super Achiever Award. Sister Hegwood also made a motion that we give $2,000 to the arch repair and seconded by King Hegwood. Motion carried.

The awards party will be in July.

President Bruce awarded pins to the 50-year members who were present. They were Donald Havemann, Ronald Havemann, Jerry Svoboda, and Edwin Volicek. A cake was furnished by the lodge in honor of these 50-year members.

Vice President Dorothy Pflughaupt awarded prizes to those who had a rainbow sticker on their shirt. These were given out at the beginning of the meeting. These prizes were from EOG Resources.

There will be an executive board meeting on March 24, 2003.

Report of Guide Josephine Pflughaupt who reported 85 members

present. She read the list of birthdays and anniversaries. Anniversaries were Daniel and Mona Anders.

Guests were Bess Treybig, Norine Valicek, Joyce Svoboda, Kristin Valicek, Leon Matula, and Helen Matula.

Door prizes of $5 each went to Charlie Viet, Calvin Orsag, Dannie Havemann, Jerry Miller, and Oma Johnson. Various other door prizes were won by members.

The meeting of the Birthday Club Sisters started at 11:15 a.m. with the repeating of the Pledge of Allegiance and a silent moment for the Armed Forces by President Marie Stayton.

Secretary Bette Hurta was absent.

Her grandson is in the hospital in Lubbock, Texas. So Lowrina Lindemann took the minutes. She does a good job.

Lowrina had the roll call with 26 members present.

Vice President Evelyn Zajicek asked for kitchen washers for April.

They are Georgie Bachanan and Mary Krippner. They will also bake a cake.

Cake bakers for April are Mary Kosut, Julie Kinnamon, Lucille Steahmann, and Bess Witovec.

Treasurer's report was by Mary Quider and passed.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut sent birthday cards to Josephine Bishop and Bess Witovec. In February and March, she mailed get well cards to the following—Albert Zajicek, Margaret Spahr, Margaret Bohac, Lydia Marsh, Ellen Miculka, Marie Stayton, and John Kosut.

Meeting Highlights.

Eighty-five members and three guests attended our meeting and the subsequent Recognition Day Banquet.

This may be a record for attendees in recent times.

Recognition Day A very nice banquet and recognition ceremony was held after our lodge meeting on Sunday, March 9.

Those being honored were 75-year and 50-year members, new members, and those who purchased additional certificates and those who provided sales leads. The bulk of preparations were done by the Dick and Martha Durham family. There were many favorable comments about the great food, the souvenir mementos, and the fraternal good time that was shared by those in attendance. Thank you, Martha and Dick and all your helpers.

It was a premier event for Lodge 92.

St. Patrick's Day Dance Congratulations to Justine Motl Chaloupka who celebrated her 94th birthday at this dance. Justine attends lodge and Ladies Circle meetings on a regular basis and always looks forward to meeting and greeting all her friends. We enjoyed the birthday cake.

There was a good crowd at the dance with midwestem music by Don Peachey. Don and his group always have great listening and dancing music. It was good to see Ed Kopecky and Lillian Kaderka of Granger in attendance. Ed will be playing his Excelsior accordion for us on Sunday, June 15 along with Clem Kubacak's Polka Star Band. It was good to see the Charlie Kulhanek's of Megargel. Also, thanks to our Dallas, Ennis, New Braunfels, and Wisconsin folks for showing up to make this dance successful. Pandora Webb got into the spirit of the Czech sing-a-long during intermission and wouldn't

mind being an honorary Czech.

Dick and Martha Durham, George and Kitty Rippin, Joyce and Frankie Tesar, Kenneth and Marx Ann Krivanek, Verne Borde and Jean Sparkman, and Vivian Read and Frank Prochaska were recognized for their work with lodge activities. The men were presented with a dozen roses, who in turn gave them to their significant others. Also, arrangements were made for a St. Patrick's Day cake which was served at intermission.

133, San Antonio members celebrate 64th anniversary Lodge

Thirty-two members enjoyed a barbecue chicken lunch to celebrate the 64th anniversary of Lodge 133, San Antonio. After, lunch, President Popp opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag. Don Netek led the members in the singing of "God Bless America." Ron and Carolyn Popp were introduced as guests of Robert and Evelyn Popp. Bill Pavliska who was being honored as an outgoing officer of the lodge was unable to attend because his wife was in the hospital.

Get well wishes were extended to Ofie Popp, Marie Netek, and Trudy Pavliska.

Lodge Hosts District Meeting May 18 Since Easter falls on the third Sunday of April, there will be no meeting in April. The lodge will host the District Seven Meeting at its May 18 meeting. The changes were read for the members. The changes were unanimously accepted.

Members celebrating March birthdays included Alma Trilicek, David Murley, Evelyn Popp, Michelle Popp, Taylor Popp, Willie Mae Cole, and Shirley Burrows. Edward and Rhonda Mazac celebrated 13 years of marriage.

The March meeting of Lodge 139 Danbury was held March 12 with the meeting being called to order at 6 p.m.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The treasurer's report was given and approved.

Lorenda Baldwin gave a report on the awards banquet and showed the Gold Award plaque received for such a great job in the 2002 Incentive Program. Thanks to our great sales representatives. Members who were unable to attend, but received awards, were given their awards.

Correspondences were read and discussed.

David Lostak and Monte Baldwin were the birthday celebrants for the month.

Meeting was adjourned, and everyone finished their meal while enjoying the fellowship.

183, Arlington hosts family night again on March 28 Lodge

Our regular monthly meeting was held on March 10, 2003 at 7 p.m. and called to order by President Ann Pustejovsky.

Dorothy Adamek reported that Inez Greenlees passed away.

Dorothy asked for a moment of silence. Also, Charley Bragg is home from the hospital after heart surgery.

Daniel Roznovsky read the minutes of the previous meeting.

Financial report was given by Robert Sill.

Ann advised that our hot dog machine is out of order, and we are unable to obtain parts to repair it. Pat Sill advised that she had checked with a company from which we could purchase one at a cost of $600 plus shipping. Eugene Havran made a motion that we purchase a new hot dog machine for $600. Janie Rejcek seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Ann advised that we needed to have an audit made of our books. It was decided that Raymond Mikeska, Eugene Havran, and Kenneth Cepak would make this audit very shortly.

Our family night is March 28, 2003 at 7 p.m. Johnny Adamek will be cooking catfish. Bring your favorite dish.

Martha Phillips was the winner of the door prize. Come to our next meeting on April 14 at 7 p.m., and maybe you will win.

Lodge 204, Stephenville plans bowling tournament The members of lodge 204 met at the Koffee Kup Restaurant at 3 p.m. for their regular monthly meeting.

There were seven adults and three youths present for the meeting.

Most of the meeting involved planning for the rest of the year and things that the lodge can do to make things better, including how we can meet more people, introduce them to SPJST and hope to make them members.

One of things being planned is a nine-pin no-tap bowling tournament to be in Stephenville sometime in September. There will be more on this subject when the planning is complete. This will be an open tournament to try to get more members to join SPJST. We hope members from other lodges will join and make this an enjoyable event.

There was also a motion to place an quarter page add in the Lodge 47 Seaton's souvenir booklet and wish them a happy 100th birthday.

We wish to remind all members that the next meeting will be one week early because Easter , is on the third Sunday in April. We will be meeting on April 13 for one month only so mark your calendar and be there.

It seems that our nation is almost at war so let's hope that it can be avoided. All of us need to pray for our men and women in the armed services and also for our leaders in the government.

Pray that our men and women can come home safe and sound.

I can remember in 1940 when the war was going on in Europe. News was broadcast from a bomb shelter in London. Let's hope that this does not have to be done this time.

Also during that time, songs like Chatanooga Choo-Choo, You are My Sunshine, and When You Wish on a Star were being sung on the radio because there was no television at that time. We were tuned in to the Burns and Allen Show on the radio and Bob Hope was entertaining the troops overseas trying to bring a little smile to the men in the fighting front.

Well, this last week, I noticed that the trees are putting on new leaves.

Some wild flowers are blooming so spring is just around the corner.

Maybe there will be no more freezes this spring and things will look beautiful soon. This would put a smile on everyone's face.

Dallas Circle of Czech Women report on March meeting Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. She said she was glad to be back after her visit to the Czech Republic. Esther led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

We remained standing for a moment of silence for Mary Mikula, mother of Frank Mikula and grandmother of Kim Mikula and Jewell Davis, mother of Bob Cunningham.

Bertha welcomed 23 members and eight men guests. It was good to have Evelyn Salac who has been absent for three years. She brought a guest, Bessie Tylaska. Vicki Kohn and Jerry brought Ella Mae Zmolik, Jerry's cousin, and Carolyn Nemec

brought her daughter, Carol Faraizl.

We hope they will join.

Bertha gave a report of her visit to the Czech Republic with the Sister City Brno delegation. She said they really enjoyed the tours. She liked the shoe factory and she bought a pair of boots and Joyce bought a pair of shoes. Bertha enjoyed her visits with her cousins and visiting with Miroslav Chodi mother. She said she told her how it was with the Communists. Joyce also reported on her trip

A Wonderful Trip It was a wonderful trip, but there were two special highlights for Joe and me. The Sunday we were at Brno, we rented a car with a driver and three other friends drove to Zadverice where Joe's mother "Rosie" Dupal Ehrenberger was born.

We attended the service in belowfreezing temperatures at the Evangelical Brethren Church which had no heat. We were impressed that there were about 50 people attending.

Of course, I did not understand any of the service except the Lord's Prayer.

We met two men, Josef and Ladeslav Dupala who we are sure are cousins, although we are not sure of exact relationship yet. I think their greatgrandfather and Joe's grandfather were brothers, but we have to research that some more. They invited us to come back and stay with them next time.

We stayed over for a week in Prague after most of the group returned to Texas. While there, I went with a friend who speaks English to visit the National Archives. They are in a new, very large, modern building in South of Prague. They did not have any water damage there, although they told me the Military Archives, which is located near the river, did have considerable damage. The staff was very nice. We had to leave most of our things in lockers, but they allowed me take my notebook that had all the family history. I got to meet the young researcher, Boridov Indra, who had done some research on the Ehrenberger family in 1998. He spoke good English and told me that he had just returned from three months in the USA where he did archival work for the New York Sokol. They allowed me to see the record of Frantisek Ehrenberger, Joe's father in the Birth Register of 1894, and the marriage of Josef Ehrenberger and Frantiska Martinkova in the marriage Register of 1874. When I asked if I could get a photocopy, they at first said they were not allowed to make copies. Then they said they would ask the director.

She did allow the copies because she could see how much it meant to us. It was very a gratifying visit. Mr. Indra is going to do some more research for us. We have not been able to find out where Joe's grandparents died nor where they are buried they are buried, nor what happened to some of his father's siblings. Although it was cold and sometimes snowy, we enjoyed all of it.

Treasurer Rosie Julius gave her report. Rosie said she had a donation from Adell Vlk in memory of Lydia Tyrock

Secretary Faye Wright;was ill, and no minutes were read. Bertha said we would use the letter in the Vestnik.

Bertha asked that I send Faye a copy of my letter to the Vestnik. Carlyn Ondrusek, membership chairwoman was absent. Bertha reminded us that the dues were due.

Birthdays were read by Bertha and "Happy Birthday" was sung for the celebrants.

Sunshine Lady Georgia Brozek sent a sympathy card to Kim and Frank Mikula and family on the loss of his mother and her grandmother; sent a get well card to Faye Wright who has been ill - we all miss her; sent a thinking of you card to Theresa Carper who fell at her home - hope she is better and we all miss her; and sent a thinking of you card to Frank Cechan who is in Presbyterian Hospital.

Esther Cunningham, program chairwoman said there was no program today. There was no door prize today.

Next month, our program will be a hat parade. She said we need to bring a hat. There will be a prize for the oldest hat, baby cap, old bonnet, fanciest, silliest hat, ugliest hat, and flowery hat. You do not have to wear the hat—just bring one. Esther said there will be a door prize—an Easter basket.

There was a birthday cake to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Anne Zvolanek, Lillian Graeser, and Lydia Pavelka.

Old Business Bertha wants everyone to look over the By-laws and bring a suggestion of what we need to change. This will be discussed.

Announcements No meeting of the Czech Culture Society in February. The next meeting is March 31, 2003 at Dallas Sokol. There will be a spaghetti supper.

Election of Officers Bertha says they need more people to attend the meetings. They are trying to hold the Czech Day at the fair together. Dallas-Ennis Fraternal council next meeting is March 10, 2003 hosted by WFLA at Ennis Sokol. Dallas-Brno Sister City has no meeting set.

Hostesses for March were Ruth Chmelar for Adell Vlk, Libbie Elsik, and Georgia Brozek. Hostesses for April are Bessie Petr, Carlyn Ondrusek, Lillian Hamusek.

A motion was made to adjourn and we adjourned with our quotation "Myte se vydcky radi"—Always love one another. The do vyhry gifts were drawn.

Esther said the blessing, and we enjoyed a delicious covered dish luncheon. We enjoyed the birthday cake of Lydia Pavelka as she was the only member present who celebrated her 90th birthday. Congratulations to all the members who celebrated their 90th birthday.

Fort Worth Friendship Club reports on March meeting The members of the Fort Worth Friendship Club met on Wednesday, March 5 with 33 members and two guests present—Jean Autry, friend of Agnes Reznicek, and Helen Strittmatter, sister in-law of Angie Strittrnatter who is one of our new members. Martha Studer was welcomed back after a long absence.

President Alice Barnes called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and was followed by a prayer read by Alice.

In the absence of Secretary Cathy Ormsbee who was absent due to her attending a funeral, Lydia Alholm read the minutes from the last meeting, and Mary Ann Kozel acted as secretary of the meeting. Treasurer Linda Homer presented the financial condition of the Club. Both reports were accepted as presented.

Sunshine Person Lydia Alholm reported on sending thank you cards to Anna Johnson for providing all the crochet hangers to everyone, and to Agnes Reznicek for all the pound cakes she presented to the birthday celebrants last month. Thinking o you card was sent to Pauline Walker.

The singing of "Happy Birthday," accompanied by Joe Kozel on the accordion, went out to March celebrants of Harold Balvin, Willie Mae I3ecan, Carrie Milan, and Anna Marie Moncrief. May you all have many more.

Annie VVhitsell reminded everyone that April is a designated month in which we bring little gifts to exchange. She has also started a 2003 photo album. Annie does such a beautiful job in displaying all the pic tures in i our keepsake albums.

St. Thomas Food Bank President Alice reminded Irene Green, Pat McWilliams, Carrie Milan, and Pauline Walker as they are scheduled to be hostesses in April. Also, April is a designated month in which we bring food items for St. Thomas Food Bank.

Door prize winners were Lydia Alholm, Roy Alholm, Billy Starr, and Dorothy Way. Hostesses for the day were Harold Balvin, Marla Gill, Linda Horner, and Annie Whitsell, and they were thanked for providing St. Patrick's Day decorations on each table which were later given away as prizes. A lovely luncheon was enjoyed following grace led by Annie Whitsell.

Carrie Milan has returned to Texas following a broken hip accident while visiting, her daughter, Marilyn in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is currently using a cane, but she looks great Carrie is staying with daughter, Carolyn and granddaughter, Carrie

Ann. Carolyn,flew to Raleigh to bring Carrie home, and while there they attended Marilyn's wedding. Good to have you back home, Carrie.

Lil Kosarek went on another day's trip with the Senior Citizens Group in Arlington. They rode the Trinity Rail Express to Dallas, toured the American Airlines Center, had lunch at the Reunion Tower, and visited the Women's Building, and Native Plant Conservatory at Fair Park. She said it was a fun-filled day.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club readies for rock climbing Dear Vestnik Readers, The March 4 meeting of the Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Crystal Bartek. Neil Rabroker led the Pledge Allegiance and the youth club motto. We had 21 members, one guest, and seven adults present. Our guest was Julia Zavodny.

Lisa Greger gave the treasurer's report. Youth Leader Heidi Bartek reported about the incentive banquet and our rock climbing trip on April 13. On the rock climbing trip, we will eat lunch at Jason's Deli. She also reported on the spring meeting, Christmas Card Design Contest, and the Easter egg hunt. For the egg hunt, you need to bring a dozen eggs stuffed with candy.

Members celebrating birthdays included Jerry Pechal, Neil Rabroker, and Lisa Greger. Door prizes were won by everyone.

The next youth club meeting is April 6 at 2 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.

Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club plan beseda, talent practice The March 13, 2003 meeting of SPJST Lodge 84, Junior Youth Club was called to order at 6:55 p.m. by President Desiree Christman.

Elisabeth Cowan led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and David Oberle, Jr. read the Youth Club Motto.

Ten members were present along with eight adults. We want to extend a very warm welcome to Morgan Wackett who is our newest member.

We also had one guest attend. His name is David Carrillo.

No minutes from last month's meeting were submitted. The Junior Youth Treasurer Ashley Andreason reported a total balance of $4.06 in our collection fund.

The Sunshine Committee reported no birthdays for March, however, one sympathy card was sent to Desiree Christman for the passing of her great-grandfather.

We did not have a social this

month.

Old business discussed was making Valentines for the S.P.J.S.T. nursing home residents, dancing the Little Red Handkerchief dance at St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Oak Cliff and our February social at Spaghetti Warehouse.

New business discussed was upcoming beseda as well as group talent practices in preparation of Youth Achievement Day and our upcoming Easter party social on April 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the Meadows Foundation Park on Swiss Avenue. The youth will hold their monthly meeting, have an Easter egg hunt, play games, and eat a picnic lunch from Kentucky Fried Chicken.

During our meeting, we also worked on a St. Patrick's Day craft of shamrocks and pots of gold.

Refreshments of Cheezits, Oreos, and Gatorade were also served by Desiree Christman and Melinda McClellan after beseda practice.

The next youth club meeting will be held on April 19, 2003 at the Meadows Foundation Park at our Easter egg hunt/party.

With no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club enjoys bowling trip Dear Readers, On March 8, 2003, the Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club went bowling to Delmar Lanes. We bowled two games and had tons of fun playing.

After bowling, we went to the lodge and held our monthly meeting.

After the meeting was over, we ate spaghetti and a salad. Afterwards, we put together little bags with soap, shampoo, and conditioner to take to the residents at the Lexington nursing home.
