Home Office barbecue on June 20 to benefit Temple Fire Department Dear Members and Friends, We invite you to enjoy some delicious, mouth-watering barbecue and trimmings at the 2002 SPJST Home Office Benefit Barbecue Lunch. The SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple, will sponsor a Texas Barbecue Lunch benefiting the Temple Fire Department on Thursday, June 20 beginning at 11 a.m.

The lunch will feature barbecue brisket, beans, new potatoes, coleslaw, pickles, onions, bread, bottled water, and dessert. Plates will be available for take-out for $5 each. The lunch will offer drive-through service. And, for faster and more convenient service this year, we will not take pre-orders.

The 2,100 plates will be available first come, first served.

The SPJST Home Office is sponsoring the barbecue lunch benefit in conjunction with one of SPJST's Join Hands Day projects. The Home Office does volunteer work and fund raising for community organizations. The SPJST Home Office began lunch bene-

fits in 1999. Since that time, through local and statewide fund raising efforts, the SPJST Home Office has raised more than $40,000 for the March of Dimes, Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children, Cultural Activities Center, and Houston flood victims.

All proceeds from the barbecue lunch will go towards the purchase of a safety house for the City of Temple Fire Department. The purpose of the portable safety house is to educate youth in schools and communities on various safety issues, including fires and tornadoes. The cost of the safety house is approximately $45,000.

SPJST records 963 applications issued through May in Vision 2002 program Through the end of March, the SPJST had received applications for 963 insurance and annuity certificates.

Over the same period, 926 certificates were issued. The goal of the Vision 2002 membership drive is to write at least, 2,100 applications in 2002.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Vision 2002 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club

Quota,' applies to those lodges with active youth clubs and reflects the number of applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals will be applied toward the lodge's total quota.

An asterisk (*) denotes that the lodge does not have a youth club. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count" reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through May 31, 2002.

The Rat Trap The next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember this story!

farmyard the rat proclaimed the warning; "There is a rat trap in the house, a rat trap in the house!"

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, "Excuse me, Mr. Rat, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it."

The rat turned to the pig and told him, "There is a rat trap in the house, a rat trap in the house!"

"I am so very sorry, Mr. Rat," sympathized the pig, "but there is nothing I can do about it but pray.

Be assured that you are in my prayers."

The rat turned to the cow. She said, "Like wow, Mr. Rat. A rat trap. Why should I be warned?

So the rat returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer's rat trap alone. That very night a sound was heard throughout

the house, like the sound of a rat trap catching its prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.

The snake bit the farmer's wife.

The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever.

Now everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's main ingredient.

His wife's sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them the fanner butchered the pig.

The farmer's wife did not get well. She died, and so many people came for her funeral that the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat.

So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember that when there is a rat trap in the house, the whole farmyard is at risk.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on June meeting Hi! First, I would like to say congratulations to Damon and Teri Perez upon the birth of their son and our grandson, Aaron Nicholas Perez.

She recently had a heart attack and had to be rushed into emergency by-pass surgery at Providence Health Center in Waco, Texas. She has a long road to go, but is improving each day. She is in ICU and may be there for another week or so. Everyone keep Lydia in your prayers. We all love you dearly, Lydia, and look forward to being able to see you again soon.

Dear Members and Friends, On May 15, Lodge 13, Dime Box held its regular monthly meeting. We want to thank Gladys Yates and Lynn Johnsen for coming to visit us. Also thank you for explaining about Vision 2002 and about the fraternal activities and paperwork. We really appreciate everything you do.

We also honored our Lifetime Achiever award winners—Mildred Horak, Albina Milburn, Lee Flippin, Joyce Ford, and Emma (Babe) Ovcarik. Without the help of these wonderful people we would still be in our old building. Thank you very much for everything ya'll do!

The roll call and minutes were presented by Secretary Wanda Dorotik and Treasurer Lisa Bubela followed with her report. New members Summer Dorotik, Kinley Bubela, and MacKenzie Krpec were welcomed to the Taiton lodge.

Barbecue Cookoff September 13 Business discussed included a report given on the District Six Spring Meeting many members attended on March 10 in Hungerford with Lodge 151, Wharton hosting.

Also discussed was the Fourth Annual SPJST District Six Barbecue Cookoff scheduled for September 13 and 14, 2002 with Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje hosting the event.

Along with the cookoff, there will be craft booths, a prize drawing, game booths, and much more with all proceeds benefiting the SPJST Scholarship Fund.

The Taiton lodge voted to donate toward the cookoff prize drawing.

Anyone wanting to rent a booth space may contact chairperson Karen Kaspar. Anyone wanting to field a barbecue cookoff team are asked to contact

chairpersons Tria Svatek or Debbie Sczech.

Announcements included the Second Annual Czech Heritage Day to be held on June 30, 2002, in El Campo at the KC Hall which begins with a meal at 11 a.m. and includes various types of entertainment throughout the day. Prize drawing tickets are available with proceeds benefiting the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange.

Awards Presentation President Kaspar then began the awards ceremony with a review of Lodge 30, Taiton's sales accomplishments from 2001 which earned the lodge the Gold Incentive Award.

The SPJST's Mission 2100 membership campaign from 2001 established quotas for lodges across the state of Texas. Lodge 30, Taiton and its sales representatives surpassed their quotas. Producing sales representatives were thanked for a job well done. They were Tommy Drapela, Lenice Kaspar, Leroy Kaspar, and Karen Kaspar. Recognized and welcomed to Taiton lodge was new sales representative Margaret Kulcak.

Also recognized were recruiter award recipients for 2001.

Youth club members Kirby Bubela and Kyle Kaspar each received photo plaques from the SPJST Home Office. The ceremony continued with the announcement of new incentives for 2002 through the Vision 2002 campaign.

On behalf of the SPJST and Lodge 30, Taiton, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and District Six Director Michael Ahlstrom presented various special awards. The SPJST annually recognizes 50 years of membership to the organization.

Lodge 30, Taiton congratulated its four recipients for this year on Sunday. Attending and receiving his 50year pin was Pete Merta, Jr. Fiftyyear pin member recipients also included Edward Laitkep Jr., Frank Hermis, and Linda Peter. Also recognized were past 50-year pin members.

All were thanked for their continued membership in our lodge.

The special awards ceremony continued with the presentation of plaques to past lodge officers. The awards went to seven past officers, acknowledging their respective positions, dedication and service to Lodge 30, Taiton. Receiving awards were Kenny Mrnustik, for serving as vice president; Anita Roye, for serving as vice president; Monica Staff, for serving as president; Joyce Kahanek, for serving as assistant youth leader, and Dorothy Duckett, for serving as vice president Also recognized were Annimae Merta, for serving as treasurer, coyouth leader, and assistant youth leader, and Georgia Dorotik, for serving as secretary, financial secretary, assistant youth leader, co-youth leader, and youth leader. President Kaspar thanked each of them for the leadership examples they set through their dedicated service.

Special Recognition Special recognition was then given to four honorees of Lodge 30 with service of ten or more years to the SPJST. Receiving Lifetime Achievemer awards were Dorothy Duckett, Joyce Kahanek, Annimae Merta, and Georgia Dorotik. Also, recognized for having 26 years service each were Annimae Merta as sales representative and Georgia Dorotik as youth leader. Gifts from the lodge were presented to each of the honored recipients.

Vice President Yvonne Marcaurele announced the door prize drawing winners. The meeting adjourned and all were treated to a cake in honor of the award recipients. The cake was inscribed—Thank you all for your service and dedication from Lodge 30, Taiton.

47, Seaton reports on June meeting Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The regular monthly meeting of Lodge 47 was held on Tuesday, June 4 at 7 p.m. The annual picnic was held on Sunday, June 2, our designated first Sunday.

Skrabanek brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. We did not have the death of a member since the last meeting, but we had a moment of silence for James J. Hoeslcher who was a regular at our dances with wife, Mary Ann. He shall be missed and deepest sympathy to the surviving family.

Secretary Adeline Kohutek read the roll call of officers, trustees and sales representatives. The minutes were read and approved. Correspondence included a letter about the food handlers being asked to respond to a new rule and a letter from the Supreme Lodge regarding the barbecue lunch being held on June 20 benefitting the Temple Fire and Rescue Fire Safety House with the profits. Our lodge will be barbecuing the brisket and 220 pounds of beans. Many members will be needed for this project.

The board minutes were read by board secretary Edwin Vasicek.

President Pechal gave his report.

He asked all the fathers to stand and they were applauded. He had awarded three scholarships to our graduates in Temple and Rogers. He also thanked all who helped with the picnic preparations and those who worked the day of the picnic. It was all appreciated and thanks again for helping, donating, and also those who came and spent time and money with us. Next year will be our 100th anniversary and we will start planning for this event during this year.

Barbecue Cookoff July 19-20 Our barbecue cookoff is set for July 19 and 20. Judges are needed in four categories—beans, chicken, pork ribs and brisket. You may contact Edwin Pechal for entries and Edwin Vasicek for the tasting part (judging). Friday night, there will be karoake under the stars, hamburgers and cold refreshments. So make plans to attend.

A letter was read from Jerry Mikulas, Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary, about the delegate count for the lodge. The lodge must meet or exceed 15 percent of its membership to keep its delegate count.

Beth Rabroker reminded everyone of the Flag Day Ceremony at the Home Office on June 14, 2002 at 9 a.m. Hope you make it. It is very inspiring.

The winners of the prize drawing were Gail Elsik-1/2 beef; second— Frieda Popelka, 19-inch television; third—Edward Mares, $100 gift certificate; fourth—Paul Sutter, $75 gift certificate; and fifth—Tammy Pechal, $50.

Youth Report Youth Leader Heidi Bartek gave her youth club report. On June 22, they will have a scavenger hunt at Stillhouse Hollow Lake and on June 30, the club is going to Summer Fun. Lodge 80, Holland reports on June meeting Dear Members and Friends, President Harold Rohde called the meeting to order of Lodge 80 at 4 p.m. on June 1, 2002. Membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. All officers were present.

Secretary Glen Latham read the minutes of the May meeting. They were approved as read. Thank you notes were read from Frank and Helen Pajestka, ARC, Melanie Zavodny, and Academy Middle School. A letter was read from the Supreme Lodge for the upcoming barbecue. Lodge 80 will prepare the potatoes.

Brother Rohde thanked everyone for the success of Lodge 80 picnic.

A letter was read from the Walk for Life asking for a donation. A motion was made by Rick Benner and seconded by Estelle Coker to make a donation. Motion carried.

Dean Brisbin was the only member present having a birthday in June.

It was decided we will have bingo on July 4 as it falls on a Thursday.

In the drawing for door prizes, Billie Latham, Rick Benner, Tony Sladecek, Barbara Taisler, and G.L. Brisbin were winners. All fathers received a six pack of their choice for Father's Day. Caps were won by Jewel Wolf, Florine Rohde, Frank Pajestka, Sr., and Harold Rohde.

Lodge 139, Danbury reports on June meeting On May 5, 2002, the Lodge 139, Danbury monthly meeting was called to order by President Lonnie Lostak, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

There were 19 members present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Rhenda Dickerson.

Treasurer Eloise Lostak gave the treasurer's report. Correspondence was read. The president announced that Lodge 139 made its sales quota.

Sheldon Baldwin, a sixth grade student of Danbury Independent School, received high point awards in reading, science, social studies and English.

Madison Dickerson, a first grade student of Danbury Independent School, received a high point award in reading and an award for being a straight A honor roll student. Madison Dickerson Madison is the daughter of Rhenda Dickerson; granddaughter of Lorenda and David Baldwin; and great-granddaughter of Tommie Lostak, all of Danbury and who are all members of Lodge 139. We are all very proud of our youth. Keep up the good work.

Reporter's Note One of the lodge members asked about having a childcare person at the meetings where there might be a large number of people. Is this a reasonable request? It was brought up that the lodge needs to find ways to attract the younger members to the meetings.

The younger members will be replacing current officers soon, and if they do not attend meetings, then no one will know about the business end of running a lodge.

I am sure that other lodges are having the same problem. We need to work on ideas to bring in the younger people. I have asked several young members why they do not want to attend meetings. I get several answers. A big one is that the meetings are boring. Another is that they have no one to watch the little ones.

Some say that they just don't have the time.

Then in the same breath they say, "I am bored, let's go shopping." What can we do to make the younger generation see the value of an organization like SPJST and want to be a part of that organization? Do we need new incentives of some sort? I think that this is a project that needs to be worked on.

Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy reports on June meeting The June 5 meeting of Lodge 200 was held at Taylor Hall in Eddy.

Secretary-Treasurer Linda Roming read the minutes of the last meeting and they were approved as presented.

She also presented the treasurer's report which was approved.

Reports were given. New members accepted were Christina Schramm, James Lee Mauldin, Grace Annette Mauldin, and Jon Austin-Lee Crook.

Correspondence was reviewed and in response to a letter from the

Supreme Lodge, it was determined that it was not necessary for Lodge 200 to file the I.R.S. Form 990 or 990T. Vice President Dan Ferguson gave a detailed report of upcoming activities available to our lodge members.

It was unanimously decided to support the upcoming SPJST Texas Barbecue Lunch Fund Raiser with a donation of $50.

Next Meeting July 3 The next meeting of our lodge will be held on July 3 starting at 6:30 p.m.

On the lighter side, I recall reading somewhere that there is a profitable use for virtually every natural resource. We, in Central Texas, have been given a new natural resource in great abundance-grasshoppers!

We didn't even ask for them! Perhaps someone out there with a creative, inventive mind can figure out some way to profit from this unwanted gift.

My squash, cucumbers and sweet corn would really be grateful.

Lodge 202, Jourdanton reports on June meeting Jourdanton Lodge 202 met Sunday, June 2, 2002 at 1 :30 p.m. at the Jourdanton State Bank Community Room with twenty two members and one guest present. Sales representatives present were Joe Huizar and Larry Wagner, Jr. President Jeff Barta welcomed everyone and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes and correspondence. Financial report was presented.

Evan Barta is celebrating a birthday in June. Anniversary celebrants are Mary Ann and Evan Barta, 47 years; and Melba and Gus Novosad, 50 years.

Youth Leader Belenda Barta reported on youth activities. Barta compiled a youth club informational letter to be supplied to sales representatives for new youth members.

Lodge voted to combine June and July donations to benefit Texas BBQ Lunch for the Temple Fire and Rescue Fire Safety House.

The lodge will sponsor "Stuff the Bus" again this year. The tentative date is August 3.

New sales representative is Jesse Huizar.

The Jeff Barta family and Gussie and Ernest Spacek furnished refreshments.

Adult and youth members stuffed teddy bears as a "hands on" project.

Corpus Christi Circle of Women report on June meeting Twenty-five members and five guests met at Sokol Corpus Christi for the June 6 meeting of the Circle of Women. Our guests were Jerry Sijansky, Savannah and Adriana White, Bill Marek, and Dan Jackson.

When I arrived early, the doors were unlocked, tables and chairs set up, coffee brewing, and the hall was cooling for our comfort thanks to honorary member Clem Kasparek. We appreciate him doing this job for us every month.

Sending their greetings were Lil Hruska, Pauline Novosad, Helen Sacky, and Jill Sijansky. Carrie Veselka is still on the sick list, but has been moved from the hospital to Villa Corpus Christi South on Yorktown Road.

Donna Havranek, Marion Peterek, and Jerry Elzner visited her in the hospital taking flowers to her from the Krouzek. A get well card was signed for Lera Nemecek who was in the hospital. Jerry Sijansky planned to visit her and volunteered to take flowers.

Milly and Jerry Elzner visited Helen Sacky delivering her SPJST Lifetime Achiever award. She had Jerry hang the plaque on the wall. He took a good picture of her with Milly and one alone displaying her award. These will go in our scrapbook.

Jerry Elzner gave us pictures he took at our May meeting with one of them showing our guests that month of Helena and Jiri Tresohlava from the Czech Republic. He also obtained the April 22 issue of the Coastal Bend Sun with had a full page dedicated to Czechs in Corpus Christi. There was a brief history of SPJST, Sokol, and the Circle of Women and also three pictures. Marie Speer, Editor, had taken one picture of our officers beside the food brought for Metro Ministries and one of Jerry Elzner and Jerry Sijansky standing in front of the pictures of Sokol's past presidents.

Jerry Sijansky reminded us of Lidice. He played part of a cd about Lidice and advised it could be checked out at Sokol's Library. Marion Peterek took advantage of this offer. Our library-museum is growing with donations of books, VCRs, cds, etc. We voted to donate $400 to help out with the ongoing work of remodeling. Jerry also announced that a handrail has been installed in the ladies restrooms to help those of us with knee or hip problems.

One of our guests, Savannah White, brought home a first place trophy from the Southern District Slet in Ennis. Savannah, who is ten years old, has been attending our meetings with grandmother, Helen Kasparek since she was four. It's been a pleasure watching her learn and grow.

She's a fine little gymnast and a fine little girl. Her little brother and sister are following in her footsteps coming home with ribbons won in the tots division.

Edna Voldan attended the graduation of her youngest granddaughter, Ashlee Lynn Tolson from Jersey Village High School. That's near Houston. Ashlee will be attending Blinn

College at College Station. Edna's oldest great-granddaughter Shelie Ann McGee graduated from high school in Oklahoma, but Edna was unable to attend. Congratulations to both girls.

Dorothy McCoy was happy for her grandson, Kyle, who left June 5 for a tour of five European countries with fellow honors students of Mary Carroll High School.

Czech Genealogical Society announces conference

The Texas Czech Genealogical Society is pleased to announce its "Hats Off To Genealogy Conference."

The conference, scheduled for July 25 to 27, 2002, will be held at the Brazos Center, 3232 Briarcrest Drive, Bryan, Texas.

With a wide variety of 35 genealogical learning sessions to choose from, attendees will be given an opportunity to learn many ways to solve unanswered genealogical questions. Twenty-five (25) speakers including Dr. Miroslav Koudelka of the Czech Republic, Mic Barnette, Lynna Kay Shuffield, Marie Mann, Colleen O'Connor, Leo Baca, Doug Kubicek, Sylvia Laznovsky, Leroy and Charlene Hurta, Patrick Janis, Elgin Kristinik, Michael McBride, Robert Dabney, etc. will cover these sessions.

Sessions presented on designated days will reflect the title given to the particular day: Thursday—"Life of the Early Texas Friday"—"Researching Czech Ancestors"; Saturday—"Texas Czech Genealogical Answers".

The conference registration fee is $75 on or before June 15 for all three days. Thereafter, the fee will be $90; and at the door, $100. This fee includes lunch all three days and dinner on Thursday evening. Special entertainment for the conference includes "A Texas Evening" on Thursday; Friday will feature two specials—"Parade of Kroje Luncheon" and "A Czech Night Out" that evening; Saturday at noon, Dick DeGuerin will feature the "Chuck Wagon".

The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met on Tuesday, June 4 at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the First Christian Church. Kenneth Meek opened the meeting with a prayer. Geraldine Socha, Vice President, conducted the meeting in absence of President John Drozd.

Dick Chomout had a cassette from the Czech Republic with Czech music.

The members sang "Kde Domov Muj?" (Where Is My Home?), the Czech national anthem, accompanied by the cassette tape.

Secretary, Edith Molberg, read the secretary's report from the previous meeting in March. She also read a report from the executive meeting which was held on April 10. Rita Vanek, Treasurer, reported the treasurer's report.

Ms. Socha read several thank you notes from graduating seniors who were recipients of scholarships received from the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society this year. The recipients were Philip Kubala, Lloyd Shrubar, Jr., Sarah Garrett, and Laura Cox. Several members from the chapter attended the May Fest which was held at the State Texas Czech Heritage Society's Museum in La Grange last month. It was a day full of activities.

Dan Marek, a director on the board of the museum, reported that the first phase of the open-air amphitheater is completed. The second phase of the project will be to install light and sound equipment. The Kalich home serves as a visitors center, administrative office, and has a gift shop. Many Czech items have been donated and are on display in the Kalich home.

The house is a replica of an early 20 century Texas Czech farmhouse. Mr. Marek stated that two more farm houses have been donated and will be restored in the future. The Center is entirely built and funded by grants and donations. This project is a non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. The Center is located on a 70-acre tract on the Fayette Cunty Fairgrounds, north of the city on U.S. Highway 77. Mr. Marek, Chairman of the Wharton County Chapter's fund raiser for the Czech Heritage Museum announced that there will be a fund raiser for the Museum in El Campo this month, June 30 at the K.C. Hall on Armory Road. Raffle tickets are available by calling Richard Chomout (979) 543-2960; or Dan Marek (979) 543-5483. Several Czech-related organizations in Wharton County are contributing to this project. The allday festivities will begin with a barbecue chicken dinner being served beginning at 11 a.m. till (?). Dine-in or drive through plates are $6. The Wharton County Czech Singers will be featured during the noon meal.

Food, pastries and kolaches will be available all afternoon. A dance to the music of Bobby Jones Czech Band will be from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be

The descendants of Paul Sury and Anna Chinota Sury and the descendants of Paul Sury and Rozina Poncik Sury will hold their 47th family reunion at the DERA Hall at the DuPont Chemical Co. Plant in LaPorte, Texas on Saturday, August 24, 2002. Registration will begin at 10 a.m.

Sausage, German-style potatoes and sauerkraut will be provided at $1 per plate. Please bring your favorite side dish or dessert to share. Drinks are included. Lunch will be served at approximately 12:30 p.m.

There will be a country store and auction of donated arts and crafts items to support the reunion's expenses.

n Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 17, Novy Tabor, wish to express our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our lodge sister, EMILIE A. SEFCIK age 90 of Caldwell, who passed away Friday, May 10, 2002 in Bryan, Texas.

Visitation was from 9 a.m. to noon and from 4 to 9 p.m., Sunday, May 12 at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell, Texas.

Mrs. Sefcik was born in the Providence community of Burleson County.

She was a retired worker of Keller Chair Company. She was a member of the New Tabor Brethren Church, New Tabor Brethren Christian Sisters, and SPJST Lodge 17, Novy Tabor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Sefcik, her parents, four sisters, and three brothers.

Survivors include two sons, John.

Sefcik and wife, Polly of Houston and Dennis Sefcik and wife, Ruth of Caldwell; two brothers, Ed Zalmanek and James Zalmanek; six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 13 at New Tabor Brethren Church with Reverend Tony Taylor and Reverend Henry Beseda officiating. Burial was in the New Tabor Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the New Tabor Church Christian Sisters or the charity of your choice.

Pallbearers who served were Frank Frieda, Edward Kristof, John Kristof, Donnie Hejl, Bennie Hejl, James Zalmanek, John Wayne Orsag, and Norman Haisler.

Expression of Sympathy The officers and membership of SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, OSCAR JEROME HRNCIR, 78, of Robstown, Texas who passed away Friday, May 31, 2002 from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was born July 20, 1923 in Robstown, Texas to Rudolph and Agnes Rektorik Hrncir. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving during World War II. Mr. Hrncir was a graduate of Texas A&M University in Kingsville and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Robstown and the Swedenbourg Foundation. He was a farmer, a school teacher in the Robstown I.S.D. for 30 years, and an artist.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Sijansky Hrncir.

He is survived by daughters, Elizabeth J. Hrncir of Charlottesville, Virginia and Elaine (Mehmet) Selis presently of Tahiti; two brothers, Wilson Hrncir of Robstown and Eugene Hrncir of Corpus Christi; fiancee, Anne Marie Klepac Eszlinger of Corpus Christi; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Visitation was held 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, June 7 in Sawyer-George Funeral Home.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 8 in SawyerGeorge Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend John Smith officiating.

n Memory of Edwin Arldt Edwin B. Arldt went to be with our Lord and Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 5, 2002. He was born March 1, 1927 to Ben and Bertha Kappler Arldt in Serbin, Texas.

Edwin was a loving and giving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend.

He was a hard worker beginning his life on a farm planting and plowing.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army. He moved to Austin, in 1948 and married Doris Kappler in 1949.

He was employed as a mechanic with C.B. Smith Motors for 17 years until 1965 at which time he began and operated his own business, Arldt Automotive Service, Incorporated located at 7951 Burnet Road, until his semi-retirement in 1984. At the time of his death, he was employed with the North Lamar Liquor Stop on a part-time basis.

As a mechanic, Mr. Arldt was extremely knowledgeable and versatile. He could diagnose a vehicle engine problem just by listening. He enjoyed building and constructing things especially additions to his home. One of his greatest loves was German polka dancing with his wife.

He was a devoted man to his family, friends and his church. He was a caring and compassionate man always placing others' needs before his own.

He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him—family, friends, and customers. He was a stranger to no one.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Doris Arldt; son, Donald G. Arldt and wife, Sherry of Leander; daughter, Donna Kay Douglas and husband, Jerry of Elgin; grandchildren, Bobby Wayne Edwards of Austin, Christopher Nathan Arldt and

wife, Brandi of Austin, Benjamin Matthew Arldt of Austin, and Clorissa Courtney Mitchell and husband, Conor of Round Rock; step-granddaughter, Hillary Beth Douglas of Claremore, Oklahoma; sisters, Evelyn Gloyna and husband, Herbert of Houston, Annie Mae Hengst and husband, Louis of Grandbury, Ruby Kieschnick and husband, Wilbert of Taylor; brothers, Milton Arldt and wife, Margie of Walburg, Fred Arldt and wife, Ruby of Brownwood, and Herman Arldt of Walburg; and numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family received friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, June 7 at CookWalden Funeral Home. Funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 8 at Redeemer Lutheran Church with Reverends Dave Schroeder, Kevin Westergren, and Mike Naleieha officiating. Interment followed at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.

The Arldt family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. David W. Terreson, Dr. William F. Kessler, and the ICU/CCU Seton Staff for the care given to Edwin during his final days.

Services were held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, June 5 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Elk with Reverend Melvin Dornak officiating. Burial was at Elk Cemetery.

Mr. Wood was born on April 17, 1925, in Waco. He worked at General Tire and Rubber Company and was a member of the Axtell School Board for 28 years. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elk and served as officers in both SPJST Lodge 35 and RVOS Lodge 50. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Rosie Wood of Axtell; daughters, Linda

Carter and husband, Paul of Round Rock and Cindy Anderson of Elgin; sons, Vernon M. Wood, III and wife, Pam of Axtell and Mark Wood and wife, Kenna of Houston; grandchildren, Troy Klanika, Theresa Sansom; Dwain Anderson, Steven Treadway, Vernon M. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the DAV, VFW and SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje.

He was a World War II Engineer Army veteran having served in the Philippines and Australia, ranking Sergeant.

Survivors are his wife, Rita Borak Vackar; daughter, Joy Janak of El Campo; sons, Louis, Vackar of El Campo and Douglas Vackar of Lake Jackson; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Henrietta Vackar, Ella Priesmeyer, Gertrude Hubenak, Helen Sturgent, Hilda Kennedy, and Della Hilscher; brothers, Ernest Vackar, Ted Vackar, and Hugo Vackar; and parents.

Visitation began at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 13 at Triska Funeral Home Chapel.

Youth Letters Section District Two Youth Club members readying for camp, Summer Fun outing Dear Members, July 12 is only ,a few weeks away, and we will once again be having the most fun of the year—CAMP! I am so excited!

Janet, Carol and I met with the LITs this weekend and came up with some great ideas to make sure camp iS one of the best ever. We have a lot of new ideas and events we know you will enjoy.

This year's camp will revolve around the carnival-circus theme.

One evening, our LITs, along with some others, will dress as clowns and have carnival type games set up.

What fun we will have.

I hope each of you is planning to attend. It looks like this year will be the year for our largest camp attendance. Many of our new campers have been asking what to bring. One of our new little campers, Elizabeth Hoelscher of Lodge 47, Seaton, told me she is already packed for camp.

Five Youth Club members visit Huntsville District

Dear Readers, On April 20, 2002, District Five took a field trip to Huntsville to visit the folk festival. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and had tons of fun.

After we visited the festival, walked around and looked at the different booths, we went to the Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville. On the way home, we stopped at the Stephen F. Austin monument to take pictures, visit the monument and see who would be the first person to find the "District Five Youth" brick.

Dear Vestnik Readers, District Six Camp will be the weekend of June 28 - 30, at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. Items you will need to bring are bed sheets, a pillow, towels, clothes, bathing suit, beach towel, sunscreen, toiletries, tennis shoes, and a flash light. With this year being an Olympic year, our camp theme will be the Olympics with a Toga Party celebrating the closing ceremonies. Please make sure and bring an extra bed sheet to dress in for the Toga Party.

I ask that all campers arrive Friday at Camp Lone Star by 3:15 p.m. that afternoon. Please don't be late. We will be departing from camp Sunday at 10 a.m.

Please do not bring coolers with food or drinks in them. They are not allowed in the cabins, and we will have plenty of refreshments provided.

There will be a time set up during the day when the trading post will be open selling ice cream, candy, etc. If you wish to purchase some of these things, please bring some money with you to camp to do so with.

Youth Club member expresses thanks to LIT counselors I want to thank State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny, her husband, and all the other counselors for the great time we had at the LIT Camp this past weekend.

We went to Boulders Rock Climbing Gym, then toured Fort Hood where the nice captain that showed us around. Then we spent the afternoon at B.L.O.R.A. (Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area), which is a really a nice water park. Saturday night, we had a patriotic costume contest and a banquet on Sunday for closing.

We divided into eight teams at the beginning of camp. My team members each won a trophy for learning and showing responsibility.

The food was really good, and we had a whole lot of fun! I am looking forward to next year.

Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club learns about Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center The Lodge 30 Tation Youth Club met on June 2 at the Tation Community Center at 2 p.m. and the adult meeting was at 12:30. We had a guest speaker, Dan Marek. He talked about the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, Texas.

We also had two other guests, who were our District Six Director Mike Alstrom and the other was Jorin Hlavaty.

There were 24 of the 28 memebers present.

Mrs. Bubela talked about our district camp on June 28 - June 30. She also talked about LIT Camp. Our next meeting will be on July 7, 2002.

Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club reports on recent meetings Dear Readers, The April 17, 2002 meeting of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club was called to by Stephanie Boyce at 7:45 p.m. Rachel Graska led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Youth Club Motto. There were eight members and five adults present at the meeting.

Rachel Anderson and Stephanie Boyce reported on the wonderful time everyone had at the Easter party.

Matthew Boyce, Brian Graska, Rachel Anderson, and Brett Adamcik reported on the great time everyone had at State Camp. Alex Graska and Rachel Anderson reported on our social to Malibu and CiCi's Pizza.

The District Five field trip will be held on April 20, 2002. We will take a trip to Hunstville for the Folk Festival.

There were no birthdays , this month. The meeting was then adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

May Meeting The May 15, 2002 meeting of Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Stephanie Boyce. Natalie Zalesky led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Youth Club Motto. There were 11 members and seven adults present. We had one new member who everyone welcomed named Maria Hernandez.

Brian Graska reported on the outing to the Putting Edge where we played putt-putt in the dark. Rachel Graska reported on the District Five field trip to Huntsville.

The election of officers was held.

Achievement Day (YAD). It will be held in New Braunfels at the Comal County Fair Grounds on June 30. It will probably begin at 1 p.m. All YAD cards were to be turned in at the meeting.

Camp July 27-30 Camp will be on July 27 - 30, 2002 at The El Shediah Ranch in Yorktown, Texas. We will meet at the Flower Shop at 9 a.m. Camp applications. are due at our next meeting. Don't forget—we need copies of your shot records and that camp forms must be notarized.

We had two new members at the meeting—Logan Davis and Giuliana Castellano. We would like to welcome them aboard. Any of you other members who have friends that would like to join, bring them to the next meeting on July 14 at 4 p.m. We have a goal of ten new members before the end of the year, and we only have four so far.

I would like to thank the Supreme Lodge officers and directors for State Camp in April. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to going again next year. I made a lot of new friends who I probably would not have met if not for State Camp. Now, I can see them again at state YAD in August.

Camp July 19-22 We also talked about camp that is coming up July 19 - 22, 2002 at Camp Val Verde. I can't wait for camp to see all my friends from last year. Hi, everyone! See you next month at camp!

We are also talking about having a youth club social in July.

After our meeting, we gave out Father's Day gifts to all of the men in the adult meeting. The gift was a key chain the youth made that said DAD on it. After that, we ate a very yummy meal of barbecue.

Dear Members, At our meeting on Sunday June 9, 2002, we did our Vestnik projects and turned them in. We also talked about Youth Achievement Day (YAD) that is going to be Sunday June 23, 2002 at Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

The Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club held its meeting on June 9, 2002 at 4:30 p.m. We had to wait for Youth Leader Wendy and Kristy and Ashley to get home from LIT Camp. They said they had fun.

Kristy reported that they stayed up

late got up early. They climbed a rock wall at Boulder City Gym and toured Fort Hood and got to eat with the y guys who were there. They also went to BLORA (Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area) where they swam, rode paddle boats water slides.

Some records go back to the 1870s with student records staring in the early 1900s and going through the 1950s.

We are planning to include stories of students who attended any of the three schools that were in Dubina. If you went to school i Dubina or you remember stories that your mother or father told you about going to school in Dubina, please take a minute to write these stories down so we can include them in the book.

We are interested in anything you may remember — what you studied, what you had for lunch or games you may have played and any interesting things that may have happened. We are planning to go to the publisher the first week in September 2002.

Ms. Socha announced that the Texas Czech Genealogical Society conference will be held in Bryan, Texas on July 25 through the 27. Several speakers will present the program.

One speaker will be from the Czech Republic. There will also be a parade of kroje (Czech costumes).

Edith Molberg announced that the next meeting of the State Texas Czech Heritage Society will be held on Saturday, August 3 in Ennis, Texas at Sokol Hall. The Ellis County and McLennanHill County ChapterS will host the meeting. The main speaker's topic will be "Sokol and Our Czech Heritage."

The chapter decided again to have a fund raiser for senior high school students' scholarships in Wharton County for the year of 2003. M. Kainer will chair the fund raiser for this event and a dinner (drive through at Staff's) will be held on Wednesday evening, August 7 beginning at 5 p.m. Pre-sale tickets will be sold by contacting Mrs. Kainer (979) 543-9326; or President John Drozd (979) 543-4073.

The next meeting of the chapter will be on September 3 at 7 p.m. at the First Christian Church fellowship hall.
