Supreme Lodge officers post 2001 annual report Dear Members, We, the undersigned, are very proud to be part of a magnificent team of dedicated members. Our Society came together this past year to accomplish an important mission for the SPJST. Success doesn't just happen. This was a direct result of members, lodge officers, sales representatives, DYCs, youth leaders, youth members, Home Office staff, Editor, and the Supreme Lodge Officers and Directors working together. We want to thank each member throughout the state who helped the SPJST achieve this goal. A total amount of certificates issued in 2001 was 2,379. This represents an 88 percent increase from the previous year. By doing this, we increased premiums collected by 7 percent. We also offered a Guaranteed Whole Life Insurance Policy up to $5,000 for our members. We feel this is a tremendous financial service to offer our members so they are adequately covered. This also resulted (for the first time in 14 years) in a net gain of new members (581) in our Society, which we have been trying for a number of years to achieve. Our hats off to all our sales representatives who worked so diligently in procuring applications for our lodges. This is outstanding! This past year a new approach was taken. Not only did we involve the Home Office staff but also the youth along with lodge officers and members. A total of 1,637 referrals were received from members and Home Office staff. Of these referrals, 611 resulted in insurance being written by our sales people. A goal was set for our youth of 350 youth applications. They exceeded that. There were 887 youth insurance applications written between 0 to 17 years of age. We want to extend to our youth, youth leaders, and Howard Leshikar
DYCs a great big thank you! Last year, the Supreme Lodge Board voted a plan of action so that more money became available to lodges when certain quotas were met. Many lodges met this challenge with a resounding success. At our annual banquet in February hosted by Lodge 80, Holland, we extended our congratulations to 71 winning lodges — an increase of 16 from the previous year. The members from Lodge 80 did an outstanding job in hosting the banquet. At this meeting, a total of $142,600 was awarded to the winning lodges. This in combination with lodge premium refunds of $158,000, resulted in a total of over $300,000 awarded to our local ,lodges. In the investment area we had a total of 702 mortgage loans on the books to our members financing a total of over $35 million. Another new feature is that we now make 85 percent loans to members if guidelines are met. We have over $95 million invested in bonds and over $3.6 million invested in common stock. Our total SPJST assets amounted to $135 million compared to our liabilities of $113 million. On the other side of the ledger, we had three bonds in default — Armstrong World, Enron, and Polaroid. Sometimes in 2002 these bonds will be written down to market value. We want to emphasize that we are operating as a team -- that is, we know that action in one area affects another. In April the entire Supreme Lodge Board met with the Finance Committee, this was the first of its kind.
"We want to emphasize that we are operating as a team — that is we know that action in one area affects another."

AM Best, one of the best in evaluating Life Insurance Companies, has continued to issue us a high rating of B++ "Very Good." We are striving to raise that to a rating of A or better, and we feel that working together we will achieve our goal again in this coming year of 2100 applications plus! Finally, we want to give special recognition to the Home Office staff, to the Field People and to the Directors for meeting the increased workload needed to accomplish this goal. Howard B.
