Time to Remember

If the SPJST was a Christmas tree, Czech heritage and culture would be the ornaments. Know what I mean?

Czech heritage and culture help to define the character of the SPJST, complementing our status as a stable life insurance provider with flair and vitality. It's a lively mix that can make membership an enriching fraternal experience.

Kind of like the city of San Antonio. You don't have to be Hispanic to appreciate the city's emphasis on Mexican heritage and culture. All that you have to do is open yourself to enjoy the warmth and charm that it adds to the city — from Fiesta Texas to the River Walk, the city embraces and celebrates the ethnic flair of its founding fathers.

It's the same here, but it's in Czech.

Without question, the SPJST's Czech connection is an organizational asset. But, just like good farmland, it has to be worked year 'round to produce a crop. In the SPJST, the Holiday Season provides us with a fine time to cultivate an appreciation of Czech heritage and culture. What a wonderful open house we had here at the SPJST Home Office on the evening of December 4, following the Temple Christmas Parade. The SPJST Museum was a focal point, with local SPJST members bringing to life many areas of the museum. More than 500 men, women, boys and girls dropped by to enjoy the holiday event which included something for everyone.

Thanks to State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny for coordinating the event, including the SPJST Home Office and Supreme Lodge parade floats. Thanks also to the many local lodge members, Home Office personnel, spouses, children and grandchildren who worked to make the event a success. Please see related photos on pages six and seven.

Learning is Fun Just to say "Learning is fun" is kind of a broad statement. Allow me to restate that: It's fun to learn when SPJST State Training Coordinator Jim Wiest is your instructor. During the first weekend of December, more than 20 SPJST sales representatives participated in an intense three-day session in order to complete all of our continuing education hours as required by the Texas Department of Insurance.

The classes, which were presented

by Brother Wiest, addressed Life Insurance Suitability, Needs Analysis, Ethics and Regulations. The instruction helps to ensure that we who sell or promote SPJST life insurance stay knowledgeable in matters relating to life insurance and meeting the needs of our members and prospective members.

High marks to Brother Wiest for his diligence and organization in presenting the continuing education classes and to all of our sales representatives who completed them this year. Keep up the good work in 2002!

Speaking of holiday celebrations, how about those lodge Christmas parties! My gosh, there were a lot of them this year! That was wonderful to see. I only regret that my family and I were not able to join in all of the celebrations to which kind and personal invitations were extended. Christmas with a Czech flavor?

Try these recipes for vanocka, Linzer cookies and vanilla rolls (Editor's Note: Last week's Vestnik included an article by Lodge 54, West member Willa Mae Cervenka, outlining Czech and Slovak Christmas customs of times past. Vanocka Recipe

The Vanocka (a special bread made for Christmas) has a long history and is still popular today.

The first reference to a vanocka was in the 16th century, and over the long years, it has gone through many small transformations.

In the past, it went under such names as huska or calta, and in some places in the Czech Republic today it can be found under a wide variety of names: pletenice, pletanka, siedrovice, stedrovecernice, stricka, strucla, zemle, and ceplik. At one time, a vanocka could only be made by a baker who was a guild craftsman.

In the 18th century, people began to bake them at home by themselves.

The first of the home-baked vanocka had to be given to the master of the house, so that the grain would prosper in the following year. At the end of Christmas Eve dinner, a large vanocka was sliced up. In some areas, a slice was given to the livestock, so they'd be healthy and safe from evil spirits.

Preparing a vanocka wasn't, and isn't, simple and therefore a variety of customs are followed in preparing the dough, braiding and baking it to ensure success. The woman of the house had to mix the dough while wearing a white apron and kerchief.

She wasn't supposed to talk, and she was supposed to jump up and down while the dough was rising. Another old custom was to bake in a coin. The person who found it in their slice was assured of health and wealth for all of the following year. A burnt or ripped vanocka was a bad omen.

Today, the vanocka is an indispensable and necessary part of the Christmas holidays, whether made at home or bought in a store. Even today, there are handy people capable of making the lower braid out of seven strands (it's most often made from four), or else they braid the whole vanocka together at once from six strands.

Now you can try to bake one with the help of our recipe!

Ingredients: 6 cups of medium flour 9 teaspoons of sugar 4 ounces of butter 1 tablespoon of yeast 1 cup of milk 1 yolk a pinch of salt vanilla sugara lemon rind 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1/4 tsp. anise 3 tablespoons of raisins 3 tablespoons of almonds an egg for the icing Crumble the yeast into the roomtemperature milk, add in 1 tablespoon of sugar, sprinkle evenly with flour, and then leave it in a warm place to rise. Put the rest of the flour, 8 tablespoons of sugar, the vanilla sugar, a pinch of salt, the lemon rind, the nutmeg, one egg yolk, and the anise into a bowl with the previous mixture when well-risen and mix well. After this, add lin the softened butter and continue to mix well.

SPJST records 2,104 applications through November in Mission 2100 program Through the end of November 2001, the SPJST had, received applications for 2,104 insurance certificates, meeting the SPJST's statewide objective of writing 2,100 new insurance applications in 2001. Over the same period, a total of 1,992 insurance certificates had been issued.

As of press time, total applications received were approaching the 2200 mark.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Mission 2100 program, local lodges were assigned application quotas for the year 2001. In most cases, the lodge quota was based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column,"Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with active youth clubs and reflects the number of applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals will be applied toward the lodge's total quota. An asterisk (*) denotes that the lodge does not have a youth club.

The sixth column "Lodge Incentive Count" reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through November 30, 2001.

As the numbers show, working together is making a positive difference. Keep up the good work!

Fraternalism and fraternal life insurance are both rooted in the principle that each of us has a responsibility to each other. Going back to the days of the Roman Empire, there were societies organized to unify groups and provide financial aid in time of sickness and death. Even then, there was a keen awareness of the cruelties and hardships that death brings to families.

These early societies had another purpose. They recognized the need of human beings for companionship. Lodge 40, EICampo-Hillje member walking, raising money for cancer research Dear Vestnik Readers and Friends, I have been a member of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje for 17 years and was an active in the youth club for seven of those. One of the first things I learned is that the fraternal spirit of SPJST ensures its members take care of one another. It is that spirit I am calling on, as I need help.

The weekend of April 26 to 28, 2002, I will walk in Avon's Breast Cancer 3-Day from Fort Worth to Dallas. Nearly 4000 people will walk 60 miles in three days. We are committed to raising money for the fight against breast cancer. Through the Avon Products Foundation, Inc. (a non-profit organization), the money goes to raise public awareness, to early detection for women who cannot afford care, to education and to cutting-edge research that will ultimately bring a cure.

I believe I have one of the best reasons for doing this—the memory of my mom. Next year will mark 10 years since my mother, Mary Ann Karasek, was diagnosed with breast cancer and five years since she lost her battle. She was our youth leader for many years. She always found ways to keep us busy with craft, service or fund raising projects. She touched many people in those years— at camp, Youth Achievement Day, Leaders-in-Training Retreats and lodge functions. Needless to say, watching her fight left quite an impression on me.

Why is there need for events like these? Did you know that one in nine women develop breast cancer sometime in their life? Think of the membership of SPJST and the number of potential victims. in light of this and the impact this disease has had on my life, I felt it was time for me to do something really big.

Inspired by the courage of my mom and those like her, I will walk 60 miles

in three days. Each time I walk to prepare for this event, I find myself becoming more determined. I walk in memory of those who are no Inger with us—like my mom, to honor the women who are weak because of the chemotherapy, to bring hope to the families who fight this battle every day with their loved ones and in hope of a day where no one worries about breast cancer touching someone they love.

I am required to raise $1,900 in order to participate. I've set my personal goal at $5000. I really want to make a difference. I can't reach or exceed either goal without the help of people like you. In addition to my family and friends, I'm calling upon the fraternal spirit of my friends at SPJST to help me.

Any tax-deductible donation you make will be very much appreciated and will make a difference in someone's life. Please keep in mind how far I am walking, as well as how much time and how many miles I will put into preparing for April. There are several ways to contribute—including an option that lets you make larger donations over a period of time; however, all pledge forms must be received by March 29, 2002.

SPJST General Scholarship Information

Meanwile, around the corner, Wallace Biskup demonstrates the use of a blacksmithing tool to Willie Prater of Lodge 89, Rosebud.

Applicants must: (1) Have an active SPJST insurance certificate in force for at least one year.

(2) Hold an active SPJST insurance certificate for the duration of the scholarship.

(3) Be a high school graduate or equivalent.

General scholarship recipients may only receive one general scholarship.

The deadline for submitting all required information is February 1.

Open house attendees construct ornament-sized angels for The Angel Project memorial service to be held in New York during Christmas week. Approximately 500 angels were made that night.

A Soldier's Night Before Christmas by U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Bruce W. Lovely, USAF (Editor's Note: The poem which follows has been circulated freely on the Internet and is being shared with Vestnik readers by District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer. Lt. Col. Bruce W Lovely, USAF, wrote the for Christmas 1993 while assigned to U.S. Forces Korea.)

Twas the night before Christmas, He lived all alone In a one-bedroom house made of plaster and stone.

They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, Because of the soldiers, like the one lying here.

I had come down the chimney with presents to give.

And to see just who in this home did live.

I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home.

I looked all about, a strange sight did I see No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with san On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.

The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, "Santa, don't cry, This life is my choice.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind, A sober thought came through my mind.

I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more, My life is my God, my Country, my Corps."

For this house was different, so dark and dreary, I found the house of a soldier, once I could see clearly.

The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep, I couldn't control it, I continued to weep

I heard stories about them, I had to see more.

So I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still.

And we both shivered from the cold night's chill.

The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, Curled upon the floor in this one-bedroom home.

So I took off my jacket, the one made of red.

And covered this soldier from his toes to his head.

The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder, Not how I pictured a United States soldier.

And I put on his tee-shirt of gray and black, With an Eagle and Army patch embroidered on back.

Was this the hero of whom I'd just read?

Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed?

Although it barely fit me, I swelled with pride, And for one shining moment, I Was a soldier deep inside.

His head was clean shaven, his weathered face tan, I soon understood this was more than a man.

I didn't want to leave on that cold, dark night, This Guardian of Honor, so willing to fight.

For I realized the families I saw on this night, Owed their lives to these men, who were willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, Whispered, "Carry on Santa, it's Christmas Day, all is secure."

Soon 'round the world the children would play, And grown-ups would celebrate -7K a bright Christmas day.

One look at my watch, and I knew he was right, Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night.

Hi! First, let me say that Brother Johnnie Krizan was greatly missed.

He had to be away with other obligations as District Three Director. He sent his letter explaining his absence and wishing everyone a_ Merry Christmas.

Our First Vice President, Brother Ray Perez, called our meeting to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, 2001. Miss Courtney Halbert and the Youth Club led us all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Miss Ashley Halbert recited our lodge motto.

Sister Barbara Hykel, Secretary, was called upon for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting.

They were approved as read. Sister Barbara had some correspondence from Melanie Zavodny of the Home Office regarding the SPJST Home Office Open House on Tuesday, December 4. Other correspondence was a letter from the Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center. There was also a Thank you note from the Marie Plunket family regarding our donation which they wanted to go to the West Ambulance Association.

Our Treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report. It was approved as given. Our Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, gave a report of our meeting on January 6, 2002, along with socials on the 4th and 18th of January 2002.

Brother George also reported that the next trustees' meeting would be on January 18, 2002 at 7:30 p.m.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, was called upon for the youth club report. She reported that the youth had worked and completed their crafts for the West Rest Haven Nursing Home. She reported that their crafts would be delivered to the nursing home on December 16 at 3 p.m. Sister Peggy also reported that the Youth Club would present a short Christmas program today after our meeting. She also reported that the Youth Club had a raffle that day as one of their fund raisers. The youth are participating in the Camp Teeshirt Design Contest and also fhe SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

Brother Raymond Marek gave us an up-to-date report on taking a trip to Louisiana. He reported that an overnight stay could be had at Casino Magic on January 19, 2002, which he had serni:reserved. Brother Marek also mentioned that the bus trip and lodge stay would run about $46, and you would be given $5 to start out with in your slot playing.

He mentioned that the money would have to be paid in by December 18 of a deposit. The bus trip needs a minimum of 40 people, leaving around 7 a.m. on Saturday and returning on a Sunday by 2 p.m. arriving in West by 6 p.m.

Brother Jerry Kucera, FIC, and Districts Two and Three State Field Representative, reported that Lodge 6 had 67 Applications for the year meeting their quota for Platinum Award. He also reported that the lodge only needs 23 more applications to meet and double our quota, but that they all have to be in by December 31. A day later will not count so December 31 is a very important date.

Brother Bobbie Dobecka, Contributions Committee Chairman, gave his report of recommendations by the donations committee. SPJST Lodge 6 donations are going to West VFD, West Ambulance Service, SPJST Scholarship Fund, West League Booster Club, West Sokol, West Girl Scouts along with eight surrounding volunteer fire departments. SPJST 6 Inc. donations are going to West Boy Scouts, Gaberial Project, Family Abuse Center in Waco, West Senior Citizens and Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Brother Bobbie Dobecka presented Sister Stella Perez with a check to the West Senior Citizens. He also mentioned that the committee was looking at the 2002 year coming up and for anyone who had any suggestions to let one of the committee members know.

Well, guess what! I don't know how this happened, but it seems that I, Stella Perez, was chosen Fraternalist of the Year for Cottonwood Lodge 6. I was presented with a turkey and ham by Brothers Milton Peterson and Ray Perez. Thanks a bunch to all the folks at Cottonwood Lodge 6 for this honor. My family will also enjoy the turkey and ham at my home for our Christmas celebration.

Those in attendance with a birthday were Sister Christine Matus and Brother Ernest Bezdek. A happy birthday to these two folks and to all with a December birthday.

Wednesday, December 19, 2001—VESTNIK/9 Also, back in the summer, Sister Barbara Hykel presented the Everyday Heroes with their pins, but some were not present. She presented pins at our meeting to those who were present. Congratulations to Terry and Tina Hykel, Sara Hykel and Aubrey and Rose Uptmor. Sister Barbara Hykel thanked all that helped out in any way today, as most had been there since 9 a.m. getting things prepared for the day.

Next Meeting January 6 Door prizes were drawn with Brother Aubrey Uptmor winning the $5 door prize. The progressive door prize was won by Evelyn Reynolds (not present). The meeting was adjourned until January 6, 2002 at 2 p.m. The meal for that meeting will be prepared by the Milton Peterson's and the Robert Seith's.

After this meeting, we all enjoyed lots of fellowship, the Youth Club Christmas Program and a delicious meal. Thanks a bunch to the Hykel family and their helpers for this wonderful meal. They are a great bunch of cookers.

There were two fund raisers for the afternoon—the youth club and the bar had raffles going. There were so many items and winners, along with the donors, it is just too much to mention here. Thanks a bunch to all who purchased tickets, thanks to those that donated items and congratulations to the winners.

6, Cottonwood members planning New Year's Eve party Lodge

Hi! We failed to mention a New Year's Eve fellowship in our December meeting; however, after checking around we found that there were people in favor of having a get-together. I want to get it in the news for you to mark your calendars. I will also try to remind you later.

For any of you members or friends who wish to participate in some good fellowship on New Year's Eve, come on out to the SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood Hall. There will be some great fun, domino games, taroky, other cards games and food. Nothing fancy just bring a little something to eat and let's ring in another year together.

Everyone is welcome, so feel free to bring your dish of snacking food and join us folks out at Cottonwood for games and eats. The more the merrier, and all of us love to "play and eat." If you have some game you enjoy playing, bring it out and let's play.

Scenes from Lodge 54, West Christmas Party December 2, 2001 • Part I Nearly 400 members of Lodge 54, West gathered at Lone Star Hall on Sunday, December 2 to enjoy an evening of fellowship and usher in the holiday season. Attendees were treated to a delicious fried chicken dinner with all the trimmings, followed by a visit from Santa and a drawing for approximately 200 door prizes.

26, Skidmore reports on December meeting Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 26, Skidmore met December 1 at 12 noon at K-Bob's Restaurant in Beeville for our quarterly meeting.

President Linda Henkhaus called the meeting to order. Everyone in attendance recited the Pledge of Allegiance. President Linda sorted and explained all correspondence she had received for the past three months.

The financial report was given by President Linda Henkhaus, as Sister Mary Denkeler was not present at this meeting due to medical problems.

Election of officers for the coming year were held at this meeting.

President Linda Henkhaus mentioned that Sister Mary Denkeler stat-. ed she could not serve as treasurer for the coming year because of her health.

Mary Denkeler has served as treasurer for Lodge 26 for four years.

Sister Ruby Jancka was voted in as our treasurer for the coming year.

A motion was made by Sister Jancka that all other officers, besides the office of treasurer, remain the same for the coming year. This motion was seconded by Sister Mary Hanus.

Motion carried. Our next meeting is planned for March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Beeville Civic Center.

"The Twelve Days of Christmas:" What's it all mean?

The 12 Days of Christmas ..

What does it mean? There is one Christmas carol that has always baffled me. What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?

Here's an explanation: From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: The surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

Two turtle doves, were the Old and New Testaments Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law — the first five books of the Old Testament.

The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit — Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit — Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control.

The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas carol. Pass it on if you wish.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 202, Jourdanton wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of JOE A. HUBENAK who passed away November 19, 2001 at the age of 78. He was born July 27, 1923 to Gilford R. and Cora (Cain) Hanna in Red Rock, Texas He married Lillian Novosad on May 26, 1946 in Jourdanton, Texas. Mack and Lillian then lived in San Antonio for 49 years.

Before moving to Taylor, Mack was an aircraft electrician at Kelly Air Force Base for 19 years. He was a member of Taylor Brethren Church and a former member of Harlandale Presbyterian Church of San Antonio for over 30 years. Mack was a wonderful craftsman, an avid gardener and a lover of nature.

Survivors include his loving wife, Lillian, of Taylor; four daughters, Linda Flens of Taylor, Sharon Singleton and her husband, Robert, of Austin, Susan Hanna of Taylor and Cindy Richardson and her husband, John, of Bedford; one brother, Jack Hanna and wife, Ozell, of Bastrop; two sisters, Odell Alexander of Lockhart and Ruby Anna McMullen and her husband, Noah, of Red Rock; one sister in-law, Bobbie Hanna of Bastrop; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mack was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Marlin Hanna; and one sister, Doris Baize.

Services, under the direction of Providence Funeral Home in Taylor, were held November 23, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Taylor Brethren Church with Reverend James Hejl officiating.

Interment was in Bateman Cemetery between Bastrop and Lockhart.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of Lodge 202, Jourdanton wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of RICHARD A. VRANA of San Antonio who passed away November 18, 2001 at the age of 67.

He was born on October 22, 1934 to Adolph and Marie Vrana in Jourdanton. He was a graduate of Charlotte High School and Southwest Texas University where he was a member of Alpha Psi Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in San Antonio.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Vrana of San Antonio; one son, Stephen Vrana of San Antonio; two brothers, Rudy Vrana of Gonzales and Robert Vrana of Boerne; one sister, Mary Poe of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services, under the direction of Porter Loring Mortuary North in San Antonio, were held November 21, 2001 at 1 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in San Antonio. Interment followed in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, D. I. BOHAC, of Temple, who passed away on Friday, November 30, 2001 in a Temple nursing home at the age of 81.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, December 3, 2001 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple with the Reverend Steven Nesrsta and the Reverend Charles Davis officiating. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery in Granger.

Brother Bohac was born in Granger to Ludwic and Mathilda Klimicek Bohac. He married Marie Steffeck on October 8, 1941 in Granger. He was a past president of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, past president of SPJST District Two and a member of the Knights of Columbus 3444 and KJT Lodge 28. He organized Happy Dan and the Melody Boys Band. He was a member and past groundskeeper of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Brother Bohac's survivors are his wife, Marie Steffeck Bohac of Temple; daughter, Lori Crotty of Temple; two sisters, Helen Konarik of Taylor and Georgia Holder of Lampasas; and two grandchildren.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and his memory remain with us forever.

Dear Readers, We held our youth club meeting on Friday, November 30. After our meeting we decorated the hall and the Christmas tree. On Sunday we attended the adult meeting and performed a program for them. Santa came and we exchanged gifts.

On Tuesday, December 4, we visited the SPJST Home Office in Temple and watched the parade and did many fun activities there that evening. On Wednesday, December 5, we delivered cakes to the nursing home.

On Friday, December 7, we attended the social at our lodge. We will be delivering the crafts that we made to the nursing home on Sunday, December 16 and will be attending the Youth Club trip to Six Flags on December 2.

Youth Club presents memorial program Dear Readers: Lodge 47 held its annual Memorial Service on Sunday, December 9. Our youth club presented the program honoring all the deceased members from our lodge. We all sang Christmas carols, and enjoyed Santa's visit! Our special guest was Pastor Joe and his family from Seaton Brethren Church. We thank them for their help in our program.

When the dough no longer sticks to the side of the bowl, stir in the washed raisins and the cleaned, sliced almonds. Shape the dough in the bowl into a smooth loaf, dust it with flour, and leave it covered in a warm place to rise (with a larger amount of dough even all night.)

When the dough has risen completely, divide it on a pastryboard into nine parts to make the vanocka. The first layer is weaved from four strands, the second from three, and the third layer from two strands. Lay greased parchment paper on a baking sheet and gradually layer the strands of the vanocka on it.

Leave it for a while on the sheet to finish rising, and then, before putting it in the oven, baste it with the whipped egg and sprinkle it with chopped almonds.

Finally, puncture the vanocka at both ends and in the middle with skewers to prevent warping of the dough during baking.

Bake slowly for about 45 minutes.

Christmas Sweets Among the most popular types of Christmas sweets in the Czech Republic are without a doubt Linzer cookies and vanilla rolls and Linzer cookies. You can try to bake them yourself according to the following recipes: Linzer Cookies 2 1/3 cups of finely-sifted flour 1 cup of butter

3/4 cup of powdered sugar 3 egg yolks 1 tsp. of vanilla sugar the juice and ground peel of a well-cleaned lemon fine flour for sprinkling on the pastry board tasty marmelade or jam fat for greasing the baking sheet Mix the flour, sugar, vanilla sugar and the lemon juice and peel together.

Add the softened butter and egg yolks and work them into a dough, which should be soft and pliable. Wrap it all in plastic wrap and leave it for at least an hour in the refrigerator to settle.

Then roll the dough out on a pastry board dusted with flour into a slab approximately 3 mm. (1/8 inch) and cut it out into various shapes, such as stars, wheels, bells and so on, which you carefully place on the greased baking sheet.

Bake them slowly in an oven at medium heat to a golden brown. After the cookies cool, paste them together with the jam or marmelade. We recommend a tasty currant or strawberry.

Vanilla Rolls 1 cup of fine flour 1/2 cup of butter 3/4 cup of grated hazel-nuts 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar mixture of powdered and vanilla sugar to cover the rolls fat for greasing the baking sheet
