More to UT Than Football Looking Ahead If you follow college football, you'll know that Colorado beat Texas, 39 to 37 this weekend to capture their first Big 12 Championship. That was a tough loss for UT. Still, there's a lot more to life and the University of Texas than football. Take Czech, for instance! The Czech language was first taught at the University of Texas at Austin in 1914 and has been ever since.

In 1990, CEFT - the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas selected the University of Texas. at Austin as the recipient of its first endowed chair for Czech Studies. In 1993, the drive reached its funding goal. With matching funds from the University of Texas, the Chair was fully funded at $1 million.

As an independent, non-profit corporation, CEFT has no ties to any religious, fraternal, or other organization although a number of SPJST members are very active in the group. The late Supreme Lodge Chairman Sid Pokladnik served as CEFT's President for many years.

The inspiration behind the Czech Chair was the late Joseph J. Skrivanek, a professor of Slavic languages at Texas A&M university who was also a longtime A&M professor; Henry Maresh, M.D. of Houston; and August Kacir of Temple. Thanks largely to the Czech Chair endowment, the study of the Czech language and related courses at UT remains assured.

Dr. Craig Cravens holds the Chair in Czech Studies at UT and teaches first-, second- and third-year Czech and a Czech literature class. And while pre-registration for enrolling in spring classes has ended, don't let it stop you, says Craig, from encouraging family and friends to sign up for Czech classes in the spring.

Students respond well to Craig's energy and spirited approach to teaching. He speaks enthusiastically about the Czech program at UT. "Academically, our program is tops in the country," he says.

"UT is the place to go if you are pursuing a degree in Czech or related studies."

Dr. Hana Pichova, a native of Prague, will be teaching a Czech literature course at UT in the spring. The university granted Ms. Pichova tenure in 1998, underscoring the university's continued commitment to Czech Studies. SPJST State Camp scheduled April 5 - 7 at Greene Family Camp Dear Members, At the Fall District Youth Counselors' Meeting on November 10, the DYCs discussed the first-ever SPJST State Camp scheduled for April 5 to 7, 2002, at Greene Family Camp in Bruceville-Eddy. The DYCs questioned if there will be enough participation. Views were also expressed that many youth may not be aware of the state camp. # It is apparent that the impression following the DYC meeting was that the state camp has been cancelled.

However, no vote was taken at the DYC meeting to cancel the camp.

Please note that the state camp has not been cancelled. No vote was taken and no information regarding cancellation has been sent out to indicate this. We apologize that an impression was left that the state camp was cancelled.

The Supreme Lodge allocated $7,000 for the state camp at their July, 2001, meeting. They also created an incentive for youth members. The youth member can earn a $12.50

Supreme Lodge Chairman Bayer recovering from knee surgery District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer had knee replacement surgery on Thursday, November 29 at

credit towards their state camp fee for each written application referred by a youth member between August 2001, and March 2002.

We are now in the process of asking the youth members if they are interested in attending the SPJST State Camp. We have received calls from youth members and leaders across the state expressing a strong interest in the state camp. The cost will be approximately $100 per person. Some youth clubs have begun raising funds for the camp, and several youth members have earned $12.50 credits by recruiting new members.

SPJST State Volleyball

Tournament played in Rogers If you missed the Volleyball Tournament held November 17 in Rogers, you missed a good time. We had three teams to come play, but before the day was over we made six teams and played until we were tired. We played the tournament with round robin games, after all teams played out the tournament, it got very exciting.

Lodge 17, New Tabor came to play volleyball and if you have ever played against them, you were glad when that game was over. We drew numbers, one, two and three. The New Tabor team did the same, making two New Tabor players on each team. The new teams one, two and three then played round robin. Everyone played and had a great time. I saw some very good volleyball players having a blast.

In Adult Spiking Lodge 17, New Tabor was first place. On their team was Captain Linda Gaas, Randy Gaas, John Stefka, Daniel Vojtek, Sharon Farmer, Lillian Beasley and Mascot Brittany Gaas. Congratulations and Thank you for the wonderful entertainment.

Adult Non-Spiking was our Hodge Podge team. It was a great group to watch. We did not have enough youth or adults or same lodge players, so we combined them and had a fun team.

If you missed this tournament, you missed a good time. The 2002 tournament has been scheduled for November 16, 2002 hosted by Lodge 24, Cyclone.

would help get more participation, it would be greatly appreciated. We have talked with the players about the spring and moving the tournament to the City Gym here by the Home Office. In 2002, we are going to have only two leagues, Spiking and Non-Spiking and having youth and adults on the same team. Please send any suggestions that you may have. Let's make this a larger and more fun tournament.

With the leadership of Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, it was a great success. We could not have had this success without the help of the officersand staff. It was a pleasure to drive up to the Scott & White Health Plan office with a van full of food. Everyone there appeared to know who we were and were very grateful for our contribution.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Christmas party December 9 Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, November 11, 2001 at the Legion hall Tap Room at 2 p.m.

President Joe Siptak opened the meeting followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Margaret Smotek read the minutes to the September and October meetings and the correspondence. Our lodge welcomed two new members, Lee Bennett Balusek and Madelyn Balusek.

Resolution Committee Chairman Gaynell Chudej read resolutions of sympathy for our departed members, Georgia A. Meyer and Debi K. Franta.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Lillie Balusek and Treasurer Helen Zabransky reported.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported that Evelyn Sklar and Evelyn Holy assisted her at the monthly bingo for the residents of Stevens Convalescent Center. The next bingo will be December 3. A get well card was sent to Viola Melnar.

A report was given in the District Six Fall Meeting and Social held October 28 hosted by the El CampoHillje lodge. In the various contests, our lodge had several winners. In horseshoes, Philip Vahalik and Raymond Sustaita placed second and Joe Siptak and Joe Balusek placed third.

Patsy Zabransky won first place in cake baking. Youth club members swept all first places in the Christmas Ornament Contest with Jonathan Vahalik, ages six to eight; Christopher Vanek, ages nine to eleven; Elizabeth Vahalik, ages 12 to 14 and Nicholas Vahalik, ages 15 to senior. Also, Joshua Siptak placed second in ages 12 to 14 and Holly Scott was third place in ages six to eight. Margaret Smotek was on the Tabulating Com-

mittee. Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who participated in the various contests.

Helen Zabransky reported she had attended the District FAC Workshop held in Temple on November 10.

A committee of Margaret Smotek, Katherine Woytek and Annie Vahalik were appointed to select as Fraternali§t of the Year for our lodge.

Election of officers will be held at the next meeting along with our Christmas party on December 9.

Santa is planning to stop by games will be played and lunch served.

30, Taiton Christmas social December 9 Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 30, Taiton will have its annual Christmas Social on Sunday, December 9. All members and their families are invited to attend for a fun filled day of friendship and fraternalism.

The adult lodge and youth club will furnish the turkey, fried chicken and dressing. All members are asked to bring side dishes or desserts to complete the meal. Our social will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the meal being served about 12 noon.

We are urging all adult members to attend a very informative adult meeting which will be at 1 p.m. Guests will be attending from the district and state offices bringing news reports from the past year.

The youth meeting will immediately follow the adult meeting. An`update on the youth accomplishments for the past year will be announced along with Christmas Caroling and exchanging gifts. All youth members and anyone interested in joining our organization is welcome.

32, Victoria Christmas party December 12 Lodge

Our November meeting was held November 14, 2001 at Victoria Electric Co-Op. The meeting started at 7:30 p.m. with President Mary Raska opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. All officers were present.

One of our members, Rodney Horelka presented a program on "Smart Plans for the Future." It was a very interesting program which we all learned a lot and it was enjoyed by all of us. Thank you, Rodney.

We also had the pleasure of having Districts Six and Seven State Field Representative Karen Kaspar. It is always nice to see her.

We will have our Christmas party for members on December 12, 2001 at Las Cazuelas .Banquet Room, 3502 North Laurent Street starting at 6 p.m.

Lodge 35, Elk Christmas party December 9 Lodge 35, Elk held its monthly meeting November 11 at 3 p.m. President Randy pavelka called the meeting to order. 40, El Campo-Hillje reports on November meeting Lodge

The El Campo-Hilije SPJST Lodge 40 monthly meeting was held November 11, 2001 in Hilije at the lodge hall. President Leona Macha welcomed 37 members and four guests. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed to recognize deceased members and those who are ill in the community. All officers and trustees were present.

Debbie Sczech, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, invited members to the lodge Christmas party December 9, 2001 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members are asked to bring a canned good for the food baskets and a dessert to go with the meal. Debbie; also thanked the lodge for the matching donation for the El Campo EMS. The money donated will be used for equipment. Ardis Bacak gave the Youth Club Report. She asked members to donate Christmas items for the youth raffle at the Christmas party.

Tria Svatek gave the Hall Rental report. Sheldon Holub gave the bingo report.

Sales Reports James Bacak reported he sold two policies last month, Ardis Bacak reported she sold one policy and Sheldon Holub reported he sold four policies last month. Sheldon Holub made a motion to accept these as new members second by James Bacak.

Lodge 63, Sweet Home meeting and Christmas party December 9 Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and Christmas party at the Queen of Peace Parish Hall in Sweet Home on December 9, 2001, beginning at 12 noon. A happy hour will be followed by a catered meal.

Lodge 66, Waco Christmas party December 16 Lodge 66 will celebrate their Christmas party at Linden Hall, Elm Mott, on Sunday, December 16, 2001.

The doors will open at 2 p.m. with a short meeting at 3 p.m., a short youth program after the meeting and the meal will be served promptly at 4:30 p.m. After the meal is served, door prizes will be given out and then Santa Claus will arrive for the children. 66, Waco reports on November meeting Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President John Engelke on November 18, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall, Elm Mott. All officers were present with the exception of Secretary Dana McAdams who was ill. There were 29 members present at today's meeting.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and Motto.

President Engelke had members to stand for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased member Katherine Gallia.

Due to the absence of Secretary Dana McAdams, President Engelke had 'Reporter Dorothy Veselka read the minutes of the October meeting and they were approved as read.

Chairman of the Board Johnnie Gaidusek reported that the Board met on November 7 and 7 p.m. and he had secretary of the Board Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of that meeting.

Co-Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Michael Galler gave the committee report. He reported that the committee met on November 7 at 7 p.m. They discussed having sandwiches brought by the members and pickles, chips and desserts furnished by the committee members. He reported that the committee has finalized the Christmas meal and it will be catered by Eddie Ray's Catering Service of Elm Mott. The meal will consist of sausage, chicken,vegetables and desserts. He also made and sent out invitations to the Home Office. The hall doors will open at 2 p.m. with a short meeting at 3 p.m., then a short youth program, the meal will be served promptly at 4:30 p.m. with door prizes passed out afterwards and then Santa Claus for the children.

Michael reported that for our January lodge meeting, we will have sausage sandwiches chips and pickles. Mem-

bers are asked to bring desserts.

Michael also thanked Louie Veselka for helping him fix hamburgers at the last meeting. The Christmas party is scheduled for Sunday, December 16, 2001. Hope to see a good turnout.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Mary Alice Langlotz thanked State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (SFAC) Gladys Yates for sending another letter concerning her schedule and about the Mission 2100. She reminded everyone of the SPJST Holiday Open House in Temple on Tuesday, December 4 at 7 p.m.

Chairman of the Cheer and Condolence Committee Bonnie Pruitt had Emma Ceska make her report. Sister Emma sent a get well card to Margaret (Polly) Gaidusek who is still in Scott and White Hospital and a sympathy card to the family of Katherine Gallia.

There was no insurance report and grievance report.

Diana Engelke gave the bookkeeping report.

It was decided that the Libbie Trust Fund Account will be handled by Youth Leader Debbie Galler and Libbie Parma.

President Engelke, read a letter from Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar concerning selection of the Fraternalist of the Year. Members selected Tim Urbanek as Fraternalist of the Year for Lodge 66. Congratulations, Tim. Youth Leader Debbie Galler gave the youth report. She reported that there were 12 youth and five adults present today. She reminded the youth of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive which is on now. She gave the winners of the District Three Christmas Ornament Contest. In the six to eight age group: second place Tommy Weeks; third place - Makayla Yates. In the nine to eleven age group: first place - Tanner Guidroz; second place - Kimberly Culliton; third place - Dakota Yates. In the 12 to 14 age group: third place - Nick Culliton. Congratulations to all the youth who participated in the contest.

Debbie reported that on November 4 the youth went skating. The youth will practice for the Christmas program on December 7 at 6 p.m. and also on December 9. Debbie also reminded the youth that the Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest ends on January 31, 2002. She also reminded the youth of the Holiday Open House at the Supreme Lodge on December 4. District Three Holiday in the Park is scheduled for December 29, 2001.

The youth are to look in the Vestnik for the time. The youth will make Santa bags on Friday, December 7 at 6 p.m. Debbie stated that the youth will have raffle prizes at the Christmas party and the tickets are only $1 each.

She reminded the youth to bring a gift for the door prize. The youth will make name cards on December 7 at 6 p.m. The youth will have their Christmas party on December 9. They will go to a movie and have a pizza party.

Youth door prize winner was Trenton Guidroz, second place by Dakota Yates. Congratulations are in order to Douglas and Kevin Galler whose Robinson School Band won the band competition in Region Eight.

President Engelke said that we will have to decorate the hall for the Christmas party on December 5 after the Board of Directors and Entertainment Committee meetings. He also said that on Sunday, December 16 at 9 a.m. the committee will decorate the tables and Dorothy Veselka will set up her Christmas tree.

President Engelke had SFAC make her presentation on Mission 2100.

She reported that Lodge 66 has 55 new member policies sold for this year. She said that we need to sell more before the end of the year.

79, Corpus Christi joins with Sokol to raise money for CHS of South Texas Lodge

Prior to our meeting, a large group of members and friends had a real nice turkey and ham dinner with all the nice trimmings.

We want to thank our District Seven Director Bob Bayer for coming.

Our Fraternalist of the Year was presented a gift certificate.

Some topics covered were scholarships. Make sure .you apply if yoii are a high school senior or in college already—an easy $1,000 if you win; keep up with your fraternal acts - keep forms up-to-date.

At our December meeting, we will be having our election of officers. So please come out and vote for your choice.

Our Christmas party will be held on December 9. Bring some type of finger food. We will be joining sokol Corpus Christi for this yearly event.

Lodge 79 joined with Sokol to have a fund raiser for the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas. We had a dance with the Majek's, county store and a raffle. A good sum was raised for this worthy organization.

Our monthly donation was raised to $100 and donated to Children's Christmas appeal.

South Texas was blessed with some great rains this past week. For the first time in eight years, one of our lakes is full. We should have some great blue bonnets next year.

We have one more month in 2001 so let's all get together and get all our quotas. We can do it.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi and Sokol party set for December 9 The Thanksgiving dinner on November 18 was well attended by members and guests and the food was delicious. Thanks goes to those who worked to get the meal ready. If you didn't attend, you really missed a good one! Then come on December 16 when we have a Christmas dinner.

After everyone finished eating, the regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Jerry Sijansky with all the officers present.

"Happy Birthday" was sung for the November 27 birthday of Jerry Sijansky and also best wishes were given for the 37th wedding anniversary on November 22 of Jerry and Jill Sijansky; the 36th wedding anniversary on November 27 of Mark and Virginia Rebecek and on November 14, the wedding anniversary of Barbara Quinones and her husband.

The reading of minutes and financial report were dispensed with until the next meeting. All correspondence was read.

Lodge Chairman, spoke about and invited all to attend the Temple Christmas parade and the SPJST Holiday Open House on December 4 at the SPJST Home Office Building. He spoke on the progress of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum and the purchase of a building. He said that he would like to see a youth club be started in Lodge 79. Brother Bob, you are always welcome to visit us any time.

The Fraternal Activities Coordinator report was given by Brother Jerry Elzner. Among some of the topics he covered were that members can apply for scholarship—he has forms; be sure to keep up-to-date the information on fraternal forms; the November 11 fund

raiser netted proceeds of $1,665 given to Czech Heritage Society of South Texas. The combined Sokol and Lodge 79, SPJST, Christmas party is on December 9, the lodge will donate fruit for the goody bags. A $20 gift certificate was given to Brother Jerry Sijansky, our Fraternalist of the Year.

For the November donation, members approved of increase to $100 to be given to the Christmas Children Appeal.

Members were reminded that the Sokol and SPJST Christmas party will start at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 9 with a program by the gymnasts. A covered dish supper will follow and each family is asked to bring enough food for themselves and any guests you bring. Then Santa Claus is scheduled to appear after supper to check if everyone has been good or not. Bags of candy and fruit will be given to conclude the day.

Then December 16 is the annual meeting of Lodge 79 and it is election time. We will start with dinner at 12:30 p.m. lodge will furnish the meat and members are asked to bring side dishes, such as veggies, salads, desserts. After the dinner, the annual meeting will be held. The officers for 2002 will be elected at this meeting so come to vote for those you want to serve as officers.

Mr. and Mrs. John Michalsky Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. John Michalsky of Houston, Texas celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a dinner and dance at SPJST Lodge 88 in Houston on September 15, 2001.

John and Lorine were married in Columbus, TeXas at St. Anthony's Catholic Church on September 18, 1951 by Reverend Alex Kraus.

Helping them celebrate were their son and daughter in-law, Johnie and Mary Michalsky; grandsons, Kristopher and Sabrina Michalsky, Nicholas and Susan Michalsky; and great-grandson, Christian Michalsky.

Now their time is spent putting their home back together after being flooded by Storm Allison on June 8 and 9. This was the first flood for them after having lived in the same house for 46 years.

Lodge 80, Holland Christmas party December 7 President Harold Rohde of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, called the meeting to order on November 3, 2001 at 4 p.m. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. All officers were present.

Glen Latham, Secretary, read the minutes of the October meeting. They were approved after one correction. A thank you letter was read from the mayor and city council of Holland for Lodge 80, Holland's participation for the city of Holland fund raiser. Two new members were voted in by a motion by Glen Latham and it was seconded by Tony Sladecek. Motion carried.

President Rohde then introduced Gladys Yates, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (SFAC). She have a brief talk.

Fraternalist of the Year

Brother Rohde said we needed to elect a Fraternalist of the Year. G. L. Brisbin nominated Frank Pajestka, Jr., seconded by Estelle Coker. Frankie declined the nomination saying he had been elected twice before. G.L. Brisbin withdrew the nomination and the second was also withdrawn by Estelle Coker. Frankie then nominated Dean Brisbin, seconded by Helen Pajestka and the motion carried.

President Rohde reminded members of the Lodge 80/American Legion Christmas party on December 7 beginning at 6 p.m. Santa will make a stop at 8 p.m. Members are to show up on Friday at 8 a.m. to prepare for the party.

Lodge 81, Needville holiday dinner December 16 On November 18, 2001, SPJST Lodge 81 of Needville held its monthly meeting. After a prayer of thanks, we had a delicious meal of turkey and dressing side dishes and desserts. A big thanks goes to Benita Walzel and Winifred Susan for baking and donating the turkeys. Also, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, thanks to Willie Mae Kuykendall for making and donating the dressing. Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee, who got everything set up for us, also deserves a big thank you. Everything was absolutely delicious. I would also like to thank all the members who made all the main dishes, side dishes, and desserts.

At 1 p.m., President Vincent Newman opened the meeting. Darlene Blinka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held for Joe Hubenak. All officers

answered the roll call. Added to our sick list were Bernie and Ann Tielke and Lynnette Newman, who is putting up with a broken finger. We're all wishing, them a speedy recovery.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report. It was approved as read. Then, Treasurer Benita Walzel read her report. There were no corrections, so they were approved as read.

Finally, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel read his report. There were no corrections, so they were approved as read.

Under old business, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel told the members that the creosote posts for the outside lights are on order. Since there wasn't any more old business, we moved on to new business.

Under new business, three new members were voted in. They were: Gabrilla Midet, Michael Scott Cooper and Paul Rychlik. We would like to welcome these new members to our lodge.

The next order of business was the election of officers. A motion was made and seconded to have everyone return to their current offices and be voted in by acclamation. Everyone agreed to keep their positions. All the other committees were voted on the same way.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club to sell baked goods, ornaments at Christmas party Dear Members and Friends, Happy holidays! I hope that all of you are planning to attend our lodge Christmas party on December 16.

Along with dinner, there will be plenty of time for visiting as well as a program by our youth club. As an added treat, members of the youth club will be holding a bake sale and selling Christmas ornaments. Funds raised will benefit our youth club.

87, Temple October, November reports Lodge

The lodge monthly meeting began at 7 p.m. on October 9, 2001. The 17 members in attendance enjoyed some great refreshments.

President Norma Alford announced that our lodge has already qualified for the Gold Award.

Discussions for lodge Fraternalist of the Year were held. John Troy was nominated as our Fraternalist of the Year Our 2002 Officer Nominating Committee was determined to be John Troy, Syd Kacir and Florence Reisner.

The next meeting will be November 13 at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, December 5, 2001—ViSTNI1C/11 November Meeting Report The monthly meeting was at 7 p.m. on November 13, 2001. Twenty-three members were present. Our pot luck supper was one of the best we have had all year. The food dishes couldn't have been better or tastier!

Discussions during the meeting included our fraternal activities for the year, Ad Valorem Tax Exemption status for all groups and associations like SPJST. The Officer Nominating Committee met and submitted the following 2002 nominees: President—Dan Kacir; Vice President/FAC—Don Alford; Secretary/Reporter—Bertha Capps; Treasurer—Daryl Entrop.

Members voted unanimously to accept these nominees as our 2002 officers.

With no other business to transact, the meeting was closed.

Christmas Meeting December 11 The next meeting will be December 11 at 7 p.m. The lodge will provide turkey and ham and members should bring pot luck dishes and a wrapped Christmas gift, not exceeding $5 in value, for our exchange.

Lodge 88, Houston lodge, member activities I never dreamed that I would be writing this letter from the hospital, but that's where I have been for over two weeks. I had a bad fall and broke my hip, having to have surgery. Viola Cox has accepted the great position of being my secretary. I write the letter and she will write it to the Vestnik so Editor Brian Vanicek and his capable assistant, Katherine, can read it.

Fraternalist of the Year Louis Hanus has been selected as the lodge Fraternalist of the Year, having been nominated by District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt who listed his many accomplishments. Viola Cox was nominated by First Vice President Marie Stayton, who listed the many things she had done. She declined the nomination.

There are several things coming up that you can enjoy. The Christmas party on Tuesday, December 4 at 7 p.m. with a performance by our Choral Group and Orchestra. Santa Claus will be there. Pat Bruce reminds us of the always great Blue Room party on December 16 from 3 to 8 p.m. with the famous Knights of Dixie Orchestra.

Congratulations to Marie Stayton who is so proud of her new granddaughter who is the first girl after several boys. Her name is Kyra Brook Stayton.

Don't forget the annual meeting on December 9. This is very important.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle reports on November meeting The Ladies Circle of Ldoge 92, Fort Worth, Texas met on November 9 at 11 a.m. at the Bamboo Garden for Thanksgiving dinner. A nice crowd attended and had a great time and a good meal.

Our next meeting will be on December 11 at 10:30 a.m. Ladies will prepare turkey and dressing and also a baked ham. All other ladies will bring a veg, salad or dessert. We should have a nice crowd and a good meal.

107, Floresville Christmas party December 9 Lode

Lodge 107, Floresville hosts their annual Christmas party on December 9 at 12:30 p.m. Barbecue and all the trimmings will be provided. All are asked to bring personal items for the nursing home, canned goods for the needy and old eyeglasses.

We will eat sand then play games. the Youth Club will have a party after the adult's celebration. All young people are invited to attend the adult party.

Everyone is asked to bring a dessert for the cake walk.

107, Floresville reports on November meeting Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 107 held its monthly meeting on November 11 at 3:05 p.m..

President Pruski called the meeting to order. Youth member Travis Purchis led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed for our deceased members.

Roll call of officers all present.

Sick Call: Edna Lyssy -- surgery; Libby Bayer – broke leg; Wendy Pruski – surgery; Bob Bayer – surgery (November 29); and Diane Korus – surgery (December 3).

Minutes: A motion was made and seconded to table the reading of the September meeting. Motion carried.

Correspondence: Secretary Purchis read a request for donation from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. A thank you note from the LAM for a past donation was also read. A note was read concerning important scholarship dates. An nvitation from the Home Office to attend the Open House on December 4 was also read.

Financial Secretary's Report Insurance certificates were issued to the following members: Steven D. Bayer; Jules Worth Pavliska; Joel Kalman Pavliska; Ellen Elizabeth Pavliska; and Wesley Ian Malcher.

Cancellations: Delbert L. Harvey, Sr. The treasurer's report was read and accepted.

The Fraternal Activities Coordinator's (FAC) Report: Eyeglass collection is still an ongoing state project.

We will make a donation to the victims in New York.

The fall district meeting collected money and donated to the SPJSTLAM. The following event dates were announded: February 9, State Tarok Tournament; February 23, Lodge Workshop and Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet; March 2, Straight Domino Tournament; and May 18, State Horseshoe Tournament.

Insurance Report: State Field Representative Karen Kasper congratulated Lodge 107 for achieving our goal.

She recognized the sales representatives – Maxine Pavliska; Hector Segura; Marvin Strey; Bob Bayer; Polly Bayer; Glen Pruski; Wendy Pruski and Connie Jo Purchis. We have 26 applications as of October 31.

Old Business Peanut Festival. This was our most successful in sales to date.

New Business Outgoing officers plaques will be presented on April 14. Lodge 107 Awards Banquet. Working on a list of all living past officers.

Youth Leader Report: There were eight members, one guest and four adults at the November Youth meeting.

191, Lufkin Christmas dance December 15 Lodge

To those of you who missed our President's Ball, you missed a great dance. The Sounds of Swing brought us great music. As always, the Lunch Box had lots of good food and the decorations were beautiful, thanks to Cindy Trevathan and her helpers, Charlotte Roland, Linda Mount and Dolores Juarez.

Christmas Dance Come join us for the Christmas dance on Saturday, December 15 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Music will be provided by the Nujac Band. Bring finger food for the snack table. For those of you who missed this band at the May dance, come hear them. They are really a great band with lots of good music.

Travis-Williamson Counties CHS Christmas party December 15 The Travis-Williamson Counties Czech Heritage Society will hold its annual Christmas party on Saturday, December 15, 2001 at the Round Rock Public Library on 216 East Main Street; North Entrance, Room A; Round Rock, Texas. The party will begin at 5 p.m. featuring a cover dish meal, a full program of entertainment and a guest speaker. All members are asked to bring something to contribute towards the meal.

In Memoriam Memory of Joe A. Hubenak n

Joe A. Hubenak died November 14, 2001 with his loving wife at his side. He was born July 2, 1937, the son of John and Rosie Hubenak in Frenstat.

Joe is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sandra; children, Elizabeth Lynn, Joe Anthony and wife, Kelly, and Michael Andrew; brothers, Louis and John and wife, Helen; sisters, Ann Orsak and husband, Charles; Rose Stanley and husband, James; brother in-law, Joe Taylor and wife, Sherry; sisters in-law, Ann Orsak and husband, Charles, Rose Stanley and husband, James; brother in-law, Joe Taylor and wife, Sherry; sisters in-law, Shelba Gray and husband, Don and Donna Pelkey and husband, Chuck; and numerous,family and friends.

In his early years, Joe was a farmer with his father. Joe served proudly in the National Guard for eight years. After graduation from Alvin Junior College and the University of Houston, Joe devoted his life to the service of his community in a variety of capacities ranging from owning his own accounting practice, elected political office and .the ownership of automobile dealerships.

He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1968 where he served for 10 years. He chaired the Committee on Agriculture and Livestock. He served on various committees including State Affairs, Correctional Institutions, Rules, Business and Marketing and Social Services Committees.

While in the House, he led the effort to create the 6,000 acre Brazos Bend State Park which today has more visitors than any other state park. He also effected passage of legislation which created benefits for survivors of volunteer fire fighters killed in the line of duty.

In the 1990s, he was appointed by Governor Ann Richards to serve on the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole. Besides his extensive business interests, Joe was active in the community as director and past president of the Fort Bend County Fair Association and past president of the Jaycees, Lions Club and the RoseRich Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Lamar CISD Board of Trustees.

Funeral services for Mr. Hubenak were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Richmond followed by graveside services at 4 p.m. at the State Cemetery in Austin.

Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, November 16 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Richmond with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

Pallbearers were Larry Dobrava, The Honorable John Healey, Arthur Mahlmann, Mike Casey, The Honorable Gus Mutcher, Dr. Dan Ives, The Honorable D.R "Tom" Uher, The Honorable Huey McCoulskey and The Honorable Jimmy Clawson.

Honorary pallbearers were the Fort Bend County Fair Board, the Rosenburg Lions Club and the Lamar CISD Board of Trustees.

For those wishing, memorials may be made to Alvin Junior College or Fort Bend County Fair, the Joe A. Hubenak Scholarship Fund.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home, Rosenburg.

of Sympathy We the members of Lodge 180, Burleson, Texas, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of IDA L. MAYER. Ida L. Mayer, 96, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at a nursing home in Mansfield, Texas. Ida was born November 3, 1904. Ida loved to quilt and was a great cook.

Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1965.

Survivors include daughters, Dorothy Lowe of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Doris Overstreet and husband, Bill of Mansfield and Lorne Harrell and husband, Glenn of Boyd; sisters, Julia Dueser and husband, Alfred and Levie Shaw, all of Fort Worth; brothers, Jerry Simmank and wife, Sue of Burleson and Raymond Simmank and Viola of Houston, Texas; sister in-law, Francis Simmank of Fort Worth; and brother in-law, Bill Hilcher of Handley; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

We are asked to meet Mrs. Jean Davis at the bank at 3 p.m. The annual Country Christmas is scheduled for December 1. During this day, we will have a float in the parade. Anyone who wants to ride the youth club float needs to meet at the high school gym at 1 p.m.

Our December meeting/Christmas party was set for December 1 at 7 to 11 p.m. Dnner and snacks were to be provided at the party. Also, each member was to bring one canned food item for the december charity project, $2 for the meal and snakes, and a $5 for the Christmas gift exchange.

SPJST youth volunteers encouraged to apply for NFCA scholarships Attention graduating high school students, you may be eligible for up to $3,000 for your college tuition costs. Read on to learn how you can become a Volunteer Scholar of the NFCA Youth Volunteer Scholarship Program. SPJST is a member of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), the Association of America's Fraternal Benefit Societies.

This scholarship was created to recognize young people like you— students with a passion for their community.

The NFCA intends to award up to $35,000 in undergraduate scholarships for use during the 2002-2003 academic year Awards will be made to graduating high school students based on demonstrated commitment to volunteer activities. Eight Volunteer Scholars will be awarded up to $3,000 each and 11 Honorable Mention recipients will be awarded up to $1,000 each. Scholarship payments cover actual costs for tuition, books and fees for the freshman year.

Scholarships are not to be used for room and board and they are nonrenewable.

In order to be eligible to apply for a scholarship, you must:

1. Be a graduating high school student; 2. Be a verified member of one of the NFCA's member societies; 3. 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club reports on November meeting Lodge

El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, November 11, 2001 at 1:15 p.m.

The youth president Cory Cerny called the meeting to order. Cory held the flag while everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance. All members and guests were welcomed to our meeting.

Everyone had a fun time doing sun stained glass butterflies, balloons and flowers.

The youth sang two songs for the adults attending the adult lodge meeting. They sang, "Nov-em-ber" and "Hip4lop-Hip." This song was about hogs and frogs on a log. We actually did have frogs and hogs sitting on log that was on top of the stage in front of the children while they were singing.

Refreshments were brought by Donna Rodriguez, Chris Cadrill, Cory Cerny and Ashley Sczech. The youth voted to contribute money to two aood causes for the month of November. One is the SPJST 100 Pennie's Scholarship Fund Drive and the other is the Afghan Children's Fund. After the meeting, everyone enjoyed greatrefreshments.

Lodge 172, Pasadena hosting holiday event for youth and parents Dear SPJST Youth Member, I invite you and your parents to attend a fun holiday get-together on Saturday, December 8 at the Pasadena SPJST hall, located at 3609 Preston Road in Pasadena.

The youth club at Lodge 172, Pasadena is organizing, and the new youth leader is Adeena Reyes. She is looking for many new youth club members. Adeena and I want to meet you and share many fun and good times with you.

Please join us on Saturday, December 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to learn more about the SPJST youth club.

We have planned a lot of activities for you to enjoy, including holiday games and a craft project.

SPJST Youth Clubs are open to SPJST youth members, ages six to high school senior. The youth club meets once each month and provides an opportunity for the youth to become active SPJST Youth Club members.

Some of the activities the youth members are involved in include: Educational Activities Regular Business Meetings, Patriotic Programs Parliamentary Procedure Practice Speakers, Arts and Crafts, Field Trips Games, Ethnic Heritage Scholarship Programs Leaders-In-Training Program Social Activities Picnics, Parties, Family Activities Movies, Bowling, Skating Fraternal Activities Regular Charity and Community-Service Projects Active SPJST youth club members have the opportunity to participate in Youth Achievement Day (YAD) and earn ribbons, trophies and cash awards. Youth camp is also provided for active members free of charge.

This camp is usually four days long and provides overnight lodging, meals, swimming, arts and crafts, sports, hiking, and horseback riding.

There is always a lot of fun at camp.

Lodge 185, New Braunfels Youth Club joins in Halloween party Dear Readers: We had our annual youth and adult groups Halloween party. All members and guests came in costume. We had sandwiches and snacks provided by the members.

The youth members participated in Make a Difference Day by collecting coats and sweaters for the Women's Shelter of Comal County. Adult member, Joan Jaroszewski volunteered to deliver the items to the shelter.

SPJST Statewide Camp. . . . . . A_re You Interested?

Dear Members, The SPJST is planning to host its first-ever State camp on Friday, April 5 to Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Greene Family Camp in Bruceville-Eddy, Texas, which is near Temple. The camp is open to all SPJST members — both active and non-active — and adults are invited, too. Details are still being finalized, but the approximate cost will be $100 per person.

The Supreme Lodge is graciously providing a portion of the funding, and, they also created a dynamic incentive for youth members. Beginning August 1, 2001 through March 1, 2002, the Supreme Lodge will pay $12.50 for each written application referred by a youth member to be used towards that youngster's camp fee at the State Camp. So, if a youth recommends eight friends who join SPJST, the youth will attend state camp at no charge!

These referrals must be submitted on a recruiter card.

The Story of the Star-Spangled Banner Part 2 of 2 Major Armistead was very proud of the huge flag. After he died, his family kept the Star-Spangled Banner. On special holidays and celebrations, his family would display the flag so that everyone could see it. Sometimes people were given pieces of the flag as souvenirs. Later people realized that this huge flag was an important part of American history. It should be preserved very carefully, so that it would last for as long as possible.

In 1912, Major Armistead's grandson gave the Star-Spangled Banner to the Smithsonian Institution, a big museum in Washington, DC. He knew that the Smithsonian would take good care of the flag. He also knew that the StarSpangled Banner should belong to all Americans.

Since 1963, the original Star-Spangled Banner has hung in the National Museum of American History, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution, and over 5 million people see it each year. Major Armistead's grandson knew that the Smithsonian had experts who knew how to preserve a national treasure as important as the Star-Spangled Banner.

But now the Star-Spangled Banner needs help. Although the Smithsonian has worked hard to protect it, the flag is dusty and dirty from being on display all these years. The sunlight during the years it was flown at Fort McHenry has damaged the fabric. The Museum now keeps the space dark to limit damage light does to the flag. Experts at the Smithsonian are going to take down the flag and examine it very carefully. They will use special gentle vacuum cleaners to remove the dust and dirt in the most fragile areas. They will look at the fabric with microscopes to learn exactly what should be done. After lots of very careful investigation, the experts will decide how to preserve the StarSpangled Banner for the future.

Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center open house set December 15 The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc., (TCHCC) La Grange, Texas, will celebrate its first "Czech Christmas Open House" at the TCHCC Kalich House Visitors' Center on Saturday, December 15, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. At 2 p.m., there will be a house blessing by Monsignor Ben Mazurkiewicz of Fayetteville. The Fayette Czech Singers, featuring the ever-famous accordionist Lee Roy Matocha of Fayetteville, will perform at 3 p.m., singing Czech Christmas carols along with some traditional Czech songs. For those interested in jumping on, an old-fashion hayride will take you around the property to view the amphitheater currently under construction. Various surprises await visitors on the 15th. Each room in the Kalich House Visitors' Center has been festively decorated for the Christmas season by groups of volunteers. Garland-draped porches and a Czech greeting at the door will bring you to the entry of Christmas of yesterday with clip-on candles, paper chains, hand-crocheted snowflakes and old glass ornaments.

A small table-top tree in the adjoining room is adorned with antique postcards of Czech kroje. Grandmother's Christmas kitchen is readying for the holidays. The conference room is aglow with the sparkle of Czectt crystal and colorful crystal candies on the Novy Bor tree centerpiece on the conference table.

LODGE 206, TRI-COUNTIES Lodge meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Lions Club in Mexia, 201 North Paris Street, Mexia, Texas.

LODGE 215, SOUTH PLAINS Meetings are held every third Sunday at the Senior Citizen Building in Tahoka at 1 p.m. The youth club meets at the same time.
