The annual SPJST 100 Pennies Drive started October 1 and continues through March 31, 2002.

The goal for this year's drive is to raise $15,000. Donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of the amount that is contributed is applied toward scholarships.

Through the end of the second week in November, 200 donations totaling $2,120.26 had been made to the 2001 2002 drive. Thanks to those who have contributed. Your generosity will help many young SPJST attend or continue their college education.

A Worthy Obligation Welcome Aboard!

Congratulations to all of our newly minted 2002 SPJST lodge officers.

Many of us have been there before.

For others, it will be a new experience.

Now what? Where do we go from here?

Before answering that, here's something to consider: Our Society was founded in 1897 by people who were looking for a better way. The SPJST was their solution -- affordable insurance complemented by a shared sense of social purpose. In that regard, we haven't changed much. What has changed are the methods we use to achieve those ends.

Our lodge officers represent a vital link between our Society's past and defining its future. First and foremost, effective lodge leadership is about planning ahead and setting a good example.

The alternative to planning ahead is to leave things up to chance. Take that route and you run the risk of "majoring on the minors" — feeding valuable time to trivial matters, enabling them to take on monstrous proportions. Too, without a clearly defined mission, multiple and conflicting "priorities" have a tendency to emerge, competing for dominance within the lodge. When that happens, you can spread yourself so thin that you lose your ability to be truly effective in any area.

Whatever you choose your objective to be, do your best to get others involved. It sure beats going it alone.

Strong teams are made up of players who respect each other. That comes with time and it takes work. It means keeping one's word, meeting commitments, giving credit where credit is due and communicating with each other when things go right as well as when things go wrong.

In the event that you find yourself walking into a volatile lodge environment — and that can happen — here's a suggestion: Try going at your problems from a new angle and find the route that can serve as the solution. Don't dodge the sensitive stuff. Keep it on the table until the people involved have worked it out — then be done with it. The idea is to "be hard on the issues and soft on the people." Without question, that can be a real balancing act. Using a little diplomacy, however, enables you to protect the relationships involved and still get to the heart of the problem.

Readers Write SPJST State Queen expresses thanks, shares sentiments of first 100 days Dear Readers; For the past three years I have had tremendous amount of support from my district to achieve my goal of becoming State Queen. It is family members like you who have pushed and pushed me to continue to reach for the star of representing District Three in the Royalty Contest. I am very proudly to announce that I reached that goal in August when I earned the title of State Queen for this year 2001-2002.

Being State Queen has opened so many doors for me to meet and understand the importance of the SPJST. Nathan Block, from San Angelo, is my State King and we both have been very busy attending parades and meeting many other distinguished SPJST family members all over the state. We

have both realized how important this title means to the SPJST. The youth clubs of our organization should be very proud to display their youth's talents and grace. Some of the other fraternal organizations do look up to the youth of SPJST for the future. They know that we are strong and willing to carry fraternalism for years to come. I am very proud of my district youth leaders in pushing me and guiding me into this direction of learning more about my heritage and this wonderful organization.

Nathan and I have already attended West Fest Parade in West Texas, Texas State Fair in Dallas Texas, and the Texas Fraternal Congress Convention in Houston Texas. We still have three more appearances to attend and they are the Temple Parade in Temple Texas, Fort Worth Stock Show Parade in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Fourth of July Parade in Belton Texas. Minutes of the October 9, 10, and 11, 2001 Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Held at the Home Office, Temple, Texas The regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST was called to order by Chairman of the Board, Bob Bayer at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. The Supreme Lodge members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of the deceased members and in respect for those affected by the tragedy of September 11, 2001.

MINUTES - The minutes were reviewed page by page. On page 354 under District VII Lodge 185 should be "New Braunfels".

Director Broz moved seconded by Director Victorick, to approve the minutes with the correction. Motion passed unanimously.

AD VALORUM TAX - A meeting is scheduled for October 25, 2001 with the Comptroller's office to discuss House Bill 1689. President Leshikar reported the lodge would have to pay a fee and apply for the exemption from the comptroller's office and if it is received then each taxing district or appraisal district would need to be contacted to grant the exemption.

LOCAL LODGE OFFICERS - President Leshikar reported the Fraternal Department will be mailing the plaques for past lodge officers for the January lodge meetings.

CEMETERY MARKERS - President Leshikar reported there have been thirty-three cemetery markers sold. He will make a report in the January meeting as to whether or not local lodges would be willing to pay $10.00 towards the cost of the cemetery marker.

EDUCATION AND NATURE CENTER - President Leshikar reported the Education and Nature Center is now incorporated and will be applying for a 501(c) 3 exemptions from the IRS.

142.00 YOUTH DEPARTMENT - State Youth Director Zavodny was welcomed to the meeting. Her report was reviewed. The Youth Department has 420 applications credited to their goal in the Mission 2100.

There was a discussion concerning the funding for camps and the ways a camper is eligible to attend. A letter was presented from the Finance Committee concerning possible changes to the way the District Youth Fund is distributed. It was decided to discuss this later in the meeting when more information would be available.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Yates was welcomed to the meeting. There was a discussion concerning lodges that don't have set times for meetings. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky for President Leshikar to present a program in the January meeting concerning lodges that are not meeting at their stated day and time. Motion passed unanimously.

State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Yates asked for input about a golf tournament. There was a discussion concerning this. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Victorick for the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator to proceed with developing a proposal on a fall golf tournament in the year 2002 for presentation in the January meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

SALES - Vice President McBride reviewed the sales figures from September 2000 and September 2001. Over this period applications written are up by 53.07%, insurance written is up by 14.74%, and earned premiums are up by 1.82%. Districts I and VI have met their quota.

Vice President McBride reported 54% of the members have $5,000.00 of insurance or less and there have been 193 guaranteed issue certificates issued during the last quarter.

MISSION 2100 - Vice President McBride reported there have been 867 leads from the Home Office, 101 leads from brochures, and 422 from the field for the Mission 2100 program.

E & 0 COVERAGE - Vice President McBride will have a full report on E & 0 Coverage for the sales representatives in the January meeting.

LOCAL LODGES - Vice President McBride reported on the meetings among the President, Vice President, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, State'Youth Director and each district director. This information will be used to develop goals for the State Youth Director and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator.

LONG TERM CARE - Vice President McBride reported that Bankers United has not been successful in getting our agents to sell Long Term Care. There was a discussion about a company that would develop a long-term care product under SPJST's name and re-insure the product 100%. Vice President McBride is to bring back information in the January meeting concerning the number of sales representatives that have signed up to sell long term care for Bankers United.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported there are six lodges that have not reported their 2001 local lodge officers and six lodges have not submitted information on the 990/990T.

The Board went into executive session to discuss a personnel matter.

VESTNIK - The Editor/Communication Director Vanicek was welcomed to the meeting. His report was reviewed. It was pointed out part of the website was not up to date. In further discussion, it was decided that Vice President McBride should review local lodge websites to be sure the sites comply with advertising rules set by Texas Department of Insurance and the privacy act.

Editor Vanicek reported on two big projects, which were the member service directory and the calendar.

There was a report from those who attended the NFCA meeting and how it had been a beneficial meeting with the different sessions being educational and meeting the attendees of different fraternals.

DISTRICT I - Director Victorick attended District YAD, Lodge 14-Wesley, Lodge 169-Brenham, State YAD, and Lodge 201-Bleibleville-Nelsonville, two fall insurance classes and the NFCA. DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky reported on attending meetings at Lodge 47-Seaton, Lodge 155-Austin, Lodge 20-Granger, State YAD, insurance classes for sales representatives, insurance continuing education classes, Lodge 47Seaton barbecue cook-off, and the District II Fall District Meeting.

INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported five lodges have reached the platinum award, fifteen the gold award, four the silver award, two the bronze award, four the honorable mention, and twenty-eight the first step award.

AUTOMOBILES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the eight vehicles SPJST owns traveled more than 200,000 miles in 2000 and the cost was 31.71 cents per mile. This includes all repairs, gas, etc.

LOANS - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on loans in progress, loans in foreclosure or threatened foreclosure, and litigation.

HOME OFFICE PROPERTY - There has been a delay in a decision about the property east of the Home Office. The Social Security agency is looking at two other properties and a final decision should be reached shortly.

EMPLOYEES - President Leshikar moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas for the mail poll concerning the independent contractor of July 24, 2001 to be declared invalid. There was a discussion concerning the use of an independent contractor for the legal advisor when there is an over load of work or the legal secretary is not available. Motion passed unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir responded to a question that to reconsider an item it requires a majority vote unless it concerns a By Law. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom to reconsider an independent contractor for the Legal Advisor Kacir. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Krizan. Motion passed.

There was a lengthy discussion concerning what the legal secretary does and what the independent contractor does. Also there was a discussion about the charges by the independent contractor.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin for the Board to authorize payment for the independent contractor for the months of July, August, and September 2001. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Legal Advisor Kacir abstained. Motion passed.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan reported on his meeting with President Leshikar and Vice President McBride concerning goals for District III. He thinks the society will achieve the Mission 2100 goal. He also requested an officer from the Home Office attend all local lodge special functions. Director Krizan expressed his feeling on the importance of accomplishing the Mission 2100 goal. Director Krizan expressed the need to increase the percentages of investments in equities and to offer interim financing.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz thanked President Leshikar for attending District IV Fun Day. He attended local lodge meetings for Lodge 76-Wichita Falls, Lodge 157-Lubbock, Lodge 215-Tahoka, Lodge 222-Vernon, Lodge 73-Seymour and Lodge 160-San Angelo. He also attended sales classes and State YAD. There was a discussion concerning the flag. By common consent it was agreed to place an American flag in the next mailouts and to have information on flag etiquette in the calendar.

DISTRICT V - Director Pflughaupt thanked President Leshikar and Vice President McBride for their assistance with the flood victims. He attended continuing education classes, Houston FIC meeting, Czech Cultural Center Gala, District V YAD, and Lodge meetings at Lodge 88-Houston, Lodge 172-Pasadena, Lodge 142-Houston, Lodge 156-Baytown, and Lodge 139-Danbury. Lodge 139-Danbury made a presentation to their local Little League Baseball Association.

DISTRICT VI - Director Ahlstrom reported on attending State YAD, District VI insurance sales classes and District VI barbecue cookoff. He attended local lodge meetings at Lodge 4-Halletsville, Lodge 10-Shiner, Lodge 23-Moravia, Lodge 28-East Bernard, Lodge 40-E1 Campo-Hillje, Lodge 143-Inez, Lodge 148-Blessing, and 151-Wharton. He attended a meeting with the officers of Lodge 19-Velehrad. He reported the NFCA conference was a good team building experience.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer read a letter from. SPJST Queen Megan Marcaurele. He attended meetings at Lodge 93-Hobson, Lodge 107-Floresville, Lodge 133-San Antonio, Lodge 185-New Braunfels, and Lodge 202-Jourdanton. He attended State YAD and Royalty, District VII meeting and FAC meetings at Lodge 107-Floresville and Lodge 79-Corpus Christi. He thanked Secretary-Treasurer Anglin for attending District VII Fall Fun Day. There was discussion concerning the Universal Life Product and that it matures at age 95 for the cash value in the certificate.

Legal Advisor Kacir in response to a question stated the work in his office is reviewed by one or two people. He further responded the work can be only reviewed once or the work can be delayed if he has to check all the work. Legal Advisor Kacir thinks using an independent contractor would be more economical.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt to authorize the Legal Advisor to hire a qualified independent contractor at a salary up to $25.00 an hour for actual time spent up to an average of 28 hours per month over a 12 month period beginning October 2001 and be paid directly to Legal Advisor Kacir. NEW BUSINESS LODGE INCENTIVE BANQUET - By common consent it was agreed the Incentive Banquet would be held at Lodge 80- Holland with a program similar to last year's banquet. By common consent it was agreed there would be two photographers taking pictures of the lodge officers and sales representatives who receive awards.

Wednesday, November 21, 2001—ViSTNIK/7 President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrorn to have a one-day training of four to five hours for all district officers within 30 days from the last district spring meeting. Authorization would be mileage for two cars from each district and a noon meal. Motion passed unanimously. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Broz for the officers to present a plan and an outline for local lodge training workshop at the January meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

MORTGAGE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented information on loans requiring only 15% down. There was a lengthy discussion that followed.

The item was tabled until the January meeting and the Legal Advisor will coordinate this with the Texas Department of Insurance.

MISSION 2100 - There was a discussion concerning incentives in the Mission 2100 for lodges that write 50% more than their quota and the state reaches the 2100 goal. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Krizan to accept the proposal presented by Vice President McBride. Motion passed unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented a request from a Knights of Columbus Council in Georgetown for a commercial loan. Following a discussion, Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin to authorize the officers to proceed with a loan to the KC's at the commercial rate following SPJST's normal guidelines and a portion of their members have to be SPJST members.

Motion passed unanimously.

FIELD REPRESENTATIVES - Vice President McBride proposed a pilot program for District VI and District VII State Field Representatives. There would be a state field representative in each district at a lower base salary and be paid higher commission override. There was a lengthy discussion concerning the override commission.

Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom to proceed with a pilot project for District VI and District VII and then in other districts. There would be a state field representative hired for each district at a base salary plus override commission and furnish each a vehicle. Motion passed unanimously.

Vice President McBride presented the 2002 incentive program for sales representatives. This program is the same as the incentive for 2001 except each quarter there will be one notebook computer awarded by drawing to a sales representative that achieved his quota and at the end of the year fifteen notebook computers will be awarded by drawing. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by President Leshikar to accept the incentives for the sales representatives as presented by Vice President McBride. Motion passed unanimously.

Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas for the commission structure and incentives to be the same as for 2001; but if another state field representative is hired, the new proposal will be used. Motion passed unanimously.

VISION 2002 - Vice President McBride presented Vision 2002 where the goal for the state is 2100 applications. The local lodge quotas would remain the same. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by President Leshikar to adopt the Vision 2002 program. Motion passed unanimously.

RE-INSURANCE - There was a discussion concerning the amount of retention SPJST should keep on substandard certificates. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Broz to authorize the Vice President to make the decision on the amount of retention on substandard certificates. Motion passed unanimously.

ADVERTISING - There was a lengthy discussion concerning the advertising dis play being used at high volume functions. Vice President McBride moved, second ed by Director Victorick to authorize the Vice President to continue to hire an individual to staff the advertising display at functions when requested by the directors.

Motion passed unanimously.

There was a discussion concerning the Youth Achiever Certificate. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky to offer the Youth Achiever certificate as guaranteed issue for $10,000.00 to current youth members ages 0 to 15. Motion passed unanimously.

Recess was taken for 1:30 p.m. to 1:40 p.m.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to ratify the investments from the July 1, 2001 to September 30, 2001. Motion seconded by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

INTEREST SENSITIVE PRODUCTS - There was a discussion concerning the interest rate paid on interest sensitive products and the yield SPJST makes on their investments. Director Broz moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin to set the UL interest rate at 7%. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Voting against were Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Krizan, and Director Pflughaupt. Motion passed.

Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin to lower interest rates on all annuities by 1/4%. Voting in favor were Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Victorick, and Director Klinkovsky. Voting against were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Motion failed.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt for the interest rates of Annuity I stay at 5-1/2%; Annuity II stay at 6-1/2%; Roth Annuity stay at 6-1/2%, and Immediate Annuity stay at 6-1/2% through January 31, 2002. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom and Director Bayer. Voting against were SecretaryTreasurer Anglin, and Director Klinkovsky. Motion passed.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Vice President McBride to reconsider the Universal Life rate. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Krizan, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Voting against were Director Broz, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, and Director Klinkovsky. Motion passed.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt to leave the interest rate of the Universal Life product at 7-1/4% through January 31, 2002. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Victorick, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Voting against were Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, and Director Klinkovsky. Motion passed.

HOME OFFICE - There was a discussion concerning the safety factor of the Home Office after events on September 11, 2001 in New York City. By common consent it was agreed to place glass doors on the hallways going to the employees' work area, so visitors will have to check with the receptionist before going to the work area.

Recess was taken from 11:25 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky to add a picture in the Board Room displaying the 2001 officers and directors with the new logo and representing the beginning of the new century for SPJST. Motion passed unanimously.

YOUTH - State Youth Director Zavodny presented her three year plan for the youth department. The plan was reviewed page by page.

MAIL POLL - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to ratify the mail poll of September 7, 2001:Motion seconded by Director Klinkovsky. Motion passed unanimously.

YOUTH - State Youth Director Zavodny and Financial Committee Chairman Dwayne Weise were welcomed to the meeting. There was a discussion concerning changes being recommended by the Finance Committee.

Recess was taken from 3:50 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

MORTGAGE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to approve the recommendation for the delinquent loans and set a loss reserve of $11,000.00 on these loans. Motion passed unanimously.

CREDIT REPORTING - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on a proposal from the Credit Bureau of El Paso to add a link between SPJST's website and Experian Credit Website for members to check their credit reports. SecretaryTreasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President McBride to add the link to SPJST's website. Motion passed unanimously.

MODIFICATION OF MORTGAGE LOANS - There was a discussion about the lowering of interest rates on existing mortgage loans. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom to allow a borrower to modify the interest rate on their mortgage loan for a fee of $400.00. The interest rate would be °% above the current interest rate. Motion passed unanimously.

The discussion continued concerning the intent of the Finance Committee to provide the same amount of funds per youth to each local lodge youth club. The interpretation of the proper procedure is for the Finance Committee to make the recommendation to By-Law Committee; the By-Law Committee would then recommend to the Board to submit a referendum to tlfe delegates for their approval.

Recess was taken from 4:40 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Honorary Vice President Mikeska was welcomed to the meeting and he expressed his congratulations to Legal Advisor Kacir for his 20 years of service to SPJST. FINANCIAL STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the total income has decreased by 2% and expenses have decreased by 49% when comparing the nine months ending September 30, 2001 and September 30, 2000. The large decrease was contributed to the payoff of the defined benefit plan. The report was reviewed line by line.

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 21 2001 BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas compared the income and expenses for the first nine months of 2001 to the budgeted amount.

DISCOUNTS OF A & B CERTIFICATES - Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to continue to allow a 25% reduction of premiums of certificates in classes "A" and "B" whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and if the member has attained the age of 70 years. An additional 25% reduction of premiums when a member attains age 75. This is in accordance with the Article 33(14). Motion seconded by Director Broz and passed unanimously.

REFUND OF LODGES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that if the formula used for 2000 is used for 2001, the total refund to lodges would be approximately $155,000.00.

MEMBERSHIP - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported SPJST has a 43,083 member count and the certificate count is 49,846.

COMPUTER - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported an agreement was signed to have Internet available on the personal computers in the Home Office.

Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Krizan for the officers to provide final details for having a Fraternalist of the Year based on the previous year fraternal acts and a Life Time Achiever award based on fraternal acts in the past. Motion passed unanimously.

Recess was taken from 9:40 a.m. to 9:55 a.m.

Representatives from the Temple Police Department were welcomed to the meeting.

They accepted the $500.00 donation and reported all the funds would be going to the families of New York City Police Department that were killed in the New York City disaster.

Representatives from the Temple Fire Department were welcomed to the meeting.

The fire fighters responded to the question that 100% of the funds that were received would go to the widows and orphans of the New York City disaster. The representatives of the Temple Fire Department thanked SPJST for the $500.00 donation.

Director Pflughaupt reported on Lodge 88-Houston hosting its anniversary on February 10, the District V YAD on June 30, Czech Day on October 27, and the Spring Festival for the Czech Cultural Center on March 3.

Honorary Director Louis Hanus was welcomed to the meeting.

DISTRICT I - Director Victorick reminded the Board that the SPJST is being challenged to keep the interest rates up. He felt the meeting was good and some important decisions were made. He congratulated Legal Advisor Kacir on his longevity with SPJST. He invited everyone to the District I Fall Meeting on October 21, 2001 at Lodge 17-New Tabor.

Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Vice President McBride for the board to require a lodge to use bound attendance registration books for validating potential delegates for the SPJST Convention. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Director Krizan, and Director Pflughaupt. Voting against were Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Motion, failed.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky congratulated Legal Advisor Kacir and employees Cynthia Hutka and Doris Tyroch for the time they have worked for SPJST. He enjoyed the meeting and thinks quite a bit was accomplished.

Director Pflughaupt presented his three-year plan for District V, which will need to be ratified by District V.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan congratulated Legal Advisor Kacir for his 20 years with SPJST. He expressed a need for sales representatives in District III. Upon recommendations by Director Krizan concerning the recent tragedy in New York City, Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Victorick to make a donation of $500.00 each to benefit the New York Fire Department and the New York Police Department. Motion passed unanimously. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt for SPJST to offer Education IRA's if there is no restriction to fraternal insurance societies. Motion passed unanimously.

In regard to the recent NFCA meeting, Director Krizan recommended the policy of those attending be changed to two representatives per year for this society. No action was taken.

In response to a question by Director Krizan, he was informed the current cookbook program would be discontinued after November 2001.

Director Krizan reported Lodge 130-Dallas will be having a fall campout the last weekend of October and everyone is invited, Lodge 35-Elk will be having its annual turkey dinner as a fund raiser on October 21, 2001 and the District III meeting will be October 28, 2001 at Lodge 25-Ennis.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz congratulated Legal Advisor Kacir on his 20 years with SPJST. He thanked President Leshikar and State Youth Director Zavodny for the new scholarship forms. He inquired as to when the SPJST history would be complete. He thinks this was a successful meeting and we are on the right track to make the 2100 goal.

DISTRICT V - Director Pflughaupt expressed a need for higher limits in the mortgage loans, as the average home in Houston is $189,000.00. There was a discussion about the board needing leeway in the mortgage program because of trying to keep a balance between mortgage and interest products.

DISTRICT VI - Director Ahlstrom congratulated Legal Advisor Kacir for serving 20 years with the SPJST. He invited everyone to District VI Fall Meeting on October 28, at Lodge 40-El-Campo-Hillje. He will be presenting information about organizing a District VI Cemetery Organization at the Fall Meeting.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer congratulated Legal Advisor Kacir, employees Doris Tyroch and Cynthia Hutka on their longevity. He expressed a need to require sales representatives to attend sales training classes.

EMPLOYEES - Financial Secretary Mikulas congratulated Legal Advisor Kacir for his service to SPJST. Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the officers are recommending a Christmas gift of $1,000.00 to each employee because they went beyond the call of duty this year. Director Victorick moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to accept the recommendation to $1,000.00 Christmas gift for the employees and editor. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, And Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Krizan. Motion passed.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by President Leshikar to authorize each officer and director to receive a $300.00 gift certificate. Motion passed unanimously.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Victorick to give each honorary director and honorary officer, $100.00 as a Christmas gift. Motion passed unanimously.

The meeting dates for Supreme Lodge meetings in 2002 are January 15-17; April 911; July 16-18; and October 15-17. All meetings will begin at 8:00 a.m.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on November meeting Hi! Our President, Brother Johnnie Krizan, called our meeting to order on Sunday, November 4 at 2:15 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the Youth Club with our motto given by Traci Dobecka.

Our Flagbearer, Sister Georgie Soukup, gave her report of 29 members present. Our Secretary, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, was called upon for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. They were approved as read. Sister Hykel then read some correspondence from the West Chamber of Commerce.

Brother Krizan then called upon Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, for her report, which was approved as given. i, - Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Hykel, gave a report on all upcoming tournaments at other lodges. She also mentioned that the Fraternalist of the Year had to be in by December 14 and asked that the committee get together after our meeting and select a Fraternalist to represent Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Sister Barbara also asked that everyone please bring their activity reports so she could be filling out her reports.

Our Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, was called upon for his report. He reported two new adult members and four additional for insurance. He also reported the upcoming bookings for the hall, with socials being for November 16 and December 7. Brother George also reported November 30 for decorating the hall for Christmas, with our Christmas Party on December 2.

Brother George dispensed with social for December 21 as it was so close to Christmas.

Sales Update Brother Jerry Kucera, Districts Two and Three State Field Representative and Lodge 6 Sales Representative, was given an opportunity to speak.

He mentioned that Lodge 6 had

reached 60 applications for 2001, achieving our quota for Platinum. He also mentioned that District Three had its greatest month since he had been in office and everyone should be very proud. Brother Jerry also mentioned that Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader, and Sister Lydia Dobecka, Assistant Youth Leader, should be commended for the great work they are doing. The youth club surpassed its quota this year.

Sunshine Committee Chairman Sister Hattie Kaska, gave her report of sending a get well card to Brother Willie A. Skerik. He had fallen and broken his wrist. We all look forward to seeing you again real soon. Sister Hattie also sent sympathy cards to Gina Marie and Gary Wayne Greener and Mr. and Mrs. Randy Greener upon the loss of a dad and brother.

Youth Report The Youth Club report was given

by Sister Peggy Dobecka, Youth Leader. She reported that the youth had a fun Halloween party on October 26 bobbing for apples. The youth

club cleaned the Lodge 6 kitchen and planted sage bushes around the hall on November 27. Thanks to everyone who helped out that day. It all looks real nice.

Sister Peggy also reported that three of the youth won first place at the District Three Fall Meeting on their Christmas ornaments. Congratulations to Celia Dobecka, Whitney Dobecka, and Bracie Craig. There were two winners in the costume contest. Congratulations to Lakn Dieterich for first place and Bracie Craig for second place. She reported that each youth had given their $1 donation to feed the children in Afghanistan.

Sister Peggy also reported that the children would be busy making their Christmas items for the residents at the West Rest Haven. The youth will work on their projects on Fridays, November 9 and 16. November 30 will be Christmas decorating at the hall. The youth also will be practicing their Christmas program.

In other business, Brother Johnnie Krizan brought up that September 8, 2002 would be the 100th Anniversary of our building. After some discussion, it was voted on to tentatively plan for a celebration in honor of our building being 100 years old.

Officer Elections The election of officers was held by Brother Jerry Kucera. Those elected to serve for the year 2002 were:

Those in attendance with a November birthday were Brothers Johnnie Krizan and Milton Peterson and Sisters Lucille Sulak and Georgie Soukup. Happy birthday to these folks and to all with a birthday this • month.

Door prizes were then drawn, with Brother Ernest Bezdek winning the $5 door prize. The progressive door prize winner was Frank Cinek (not present).

Various other door prizes were exchanged with some winning door prizes from the Home Office, courtesy of Brother Jerry Kucera. These winners were Marie Horak-notebook; Stella Perez-calculator; Georgie Soukupcandle; Ray Perez :coffee mug. Thanks to the Home Office and congratulations to the winners.

Our meeting was then adjourned to enjoy a meal prepared by Brother Al and Sister Georgie Soukup and Sisters Hattie Kaska and Mary Neckar.

Thanks! The meal for our next meeting will be turkey and dressing. The meal servers for our. January, 2002 meeting will be prepared by the Seith family and the Peterson family.

Christmas Party December 2 Our next meeting will be our Christmas Party and Meeting on Sunday, December 2, at 2 p.m. We will have a short meeting, then the youth club program, Santa visit, and our Christmas meal.

8, Weimar reports on October meeting Lodge

Lodge 8, Weimar met October 22 at the Weimar Veterans' Hall. President Jares called the meeting to order and opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members. Our special guests attending were Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and Mrs. McBride, Assistant to the. Vice President Kathy Fritz, District Six Directof Mike Ahlstrom and Mrs. Ahlstrom and State Field Representative for Districts Six and Seven Karen Kaspar. Our attendance register showed 29 members and guests present.

Roll call of officers showed everyone present. The minutes were read and approved and the treasurer's report was also apploved. A thank you letter from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum was read acknowledging a donation remembering our deceased members. A reminder of the District Six Fall Meeting to be on October 28 was also brought up. We also voted to send our lodge monetary donation to the district treasurer to help cover expenses.

Christmas Party December 7 We discussed the Christmas party and it was set for Friday, December 7.

The place to be decided as to availability of hall. Letters will be sent out advising the members when and where.

"Just look at those smiles," writes Lodge 8, Weimar President Leo Jares, referring to the above photo. "That's what takes place at our meetings." Members of Lodge 20, Granger express their thanks to Elroy Liebrum, front and center, for entertaining them at their monthly lodge meetings with tunes on the accordion. He'll be performing again at the Lodge 20 Christmas Party on Sunday, December 2. Meat and drinks will be furnished and each family is asked to bring two side dishes.

Fifty-year pins will also be presented during the party.

A nominating committee was appointed. They are Barbara Veselka, Gene Veselka. and A. J. Shumbera.

The Audit Committee appointed is Erline Janik, Earline Muenster and Raymond Kocian.

50-Year Member Honored We also honored another 50-Year member. He is Mr. Anton Machacek and he has been a member longer than 50 years—congratulations. Vice President McBride presented the pin to Mr. Machacek.

Social Security Program Kathy Fritz presented a program on Social Security changes in 2002 and Long Term Healthcare Products. It is something all of us are interested in at this time. Vice President McBride gave us an update on Mission 2100, noting that our lodge had met its quota. Director Ahlstrom updated us on how good District Six is progressing. State Field Representative Karen Kaspar gave us some encouraging words to keep on promoting the SPJST products.

We had four birthday honorees — George J., Monica K., Christy K. and Franklin F. A big happy birthday to all. We also had four wedding anniversary celebrants — George and

Erline, Henrietta and Gene, Earline and Elmer and Barbara and Franklin.

We wish them all many more years of wedded bliss.

We drew for door prizes that were brought by members in attendance.

Vice President McBride also brought some prizes which added to the fun of having almost enough for everyone to get a prize. Refreshments were served after the meeting.

20, Granger to present 50-year pins at December 2 Christmas party Lodge

SPJST Lodge 20 of Granger will hold a short meeting and its annual Christmas party on Sunday, December 2 at 3:30 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge hall in Granger.

A ham and sausage supper will be served. Meat and drinks will be furnished and each family is asked to bring two dishes, a salad, vegetable and/or dessert. All members and their families are invited to attend and enjoy fellowship through their membership in the SPJST. Members who received their 50year pins this year will be honored at our Christmas party. They are Frances Ann Fisher, Hattie F. Gaida, Ray Allen Holubec, David L. Matloch, Henry E. Matloch, Johnnie Lee Matloch, Gladys S. Parker and Shirley Ann Valcik. Also, we will honor our Lodge 20 Fraternalist of the Year, Josephine Strmiska. Door prizes will be given away. We will be entertained with accordion music by Elroy Liebrum and Nolan Werchan.

Flag Donation

Lodge 8, Weimar Honors 50-Year Member Meeting on October 22 at the Weimar Veterans' Hall, Lodge 8, Weimar paid tribute to Anton Machacek for more than 50 years of dedicated membership to the SPJST. Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride presented Brother Machacek with his 50-year pin.

Lodge 20, Granger wishes to thank Rudy and Alice Hajda for the new flag they donated to our lodge. The flag was flown over the United States Capitol on May 31, 2001 at the request of the Honorable Ron Paul, member of Congress. This flag was presented to SPJST Lodge 20, Granger by Rudy and Alice Hajda in memory of Raymond Matulla who retired as major in the Air Force, having served 20 years.

He retired in Bossier City, Louisiana and was the brother of Alice Hajda.

Lodge 20, Granger says "Thanks" to Rudy and Alice Hajda for donating a new American flag to the lodge hall. The flag had previously been flown over the United States Capitol.

We would also like to thank Elroy Liebrum for entertaining us at our monthly meetings with his accordion music.

30, Taiton encourages all members to attend Christmas social Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 30, Taiton will have its annual Christmas Social on Sunday, December 9. All members and their families are invited to attend for a fun filled day of friendship and fraternalism.

The adult lodge and youth club will furnish the turkey, fried chicken and dressing. All members are asked to bring side dishes or desserts to complete the meal. Our social will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the meal being served about 12 noon.

We are urging all adult members to attend. a very informative adult meeting which will be at 1 p.m. Guests will be attending from the district and state offices bringing news reports from the past year.

47, Seaton elects officers at November meeting Lodge

We, from Lodge 47 wish everyone a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.

We had our monthly meeting Sunday, November 4 at 1 p.m. Neal Rabroker and Josef Morris brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Joyce Skrabanek had sent get well cards to Brooke Glaser, Bill Kotrla and Juanita Wychopen. We wish them and everyone else a speedy recovery.

New members welcomed were Lillian Kay Clark, Stacy Ann Clark, Allen Wesley Rastovich, Misti Jean Rastovich and Vlasta Rosalie Horton.

Transferred in were Davis Ross Mainard and Ever Marie Mainard.

Secretary Adeline Kohutek read the minutes from the October meeting and also the correspondence. We are looking forward to the Christmas party to be held at Supreme Lodge after the Temple Christmas Parade on December 4.

Board Secretary Edwin Vasicek read the October board minutes. Ruth Hanusch, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, read a poem about our flag. We are all proud of our heritage and our flag. She also announced the volleyball tournament November 17 at Rogers High School Gym. Treasurer Gladys Marek gave, a good financial report.

James Skrabanek gave the audit report. All chairpersons gave satisfactory reports.

Heidi Bartek gave the youth club report. The youth club also presented a very nice Veterans' Day skit.

It was decided to donate $50 to the Department of Public Safety Officers Association.

On November 30 at 6:30 p.m., interested members should meet at the hall and we will go as a group to tour BLORA (Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area) at the Belton Lake. New Christmas decorations are added every year and it seems it can't get more beautiful.

We are looking for a cleanup committee for the hall and someone to cut the yard next year. Anyone interested should call Edwin Pechal or Woodrow Marek.

88, Houston accepting 2002 scholarship applications Lodge

Lodge 88, is now accepting applications for scholarship for the 2002 school year. To qualify, a student must be a member of Lodge 88 for a period of at least two years. The student must be paying local lodge dues and has to apply during the first semester of his senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of the year 2002.

133, San Antonio reports on October meeting Lodge

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 133 was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Jarolyn Popp. The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang, "God Bless America," which was led by Dominic Netek.

A moment of silence was held for all deceased members. The roll call of officers showed all officers present.

The September minutes were read by Secretary Robert Popp. They were approved as read. The financial report was then read and approved for audit.

There were no couples celebrating anniversaries in October.

Emil Matula nominated Viola Kurtz for Fraternalist of the Year and it was seconded by Bill Marsh.

A motion was made by Evelyn Matula that we have a Thanksgiving dinner. It was seconded by Grace Rohan. A motion was made by Emil Matula that the turkey for the dinner be catered and that each member bring a dish and dessert. It was seconded by.

139, Danbury reports on November meeting

District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt and his wife, Dorothy, were guests at the November 7 meeting of Danbury Lodge 139 at E J's Restaurant. Larry told the group he had attended the meetings of both the Texas and the National Fraternal Congress. He explained the SPJST extended incentives program and answered several questions asked by the members. At the end of the meeting, he handed out several door prizes.

Other business included a discussion on whether the lodge should continue giving turkeys to our senior citizens as we have in years past. It was

Jourdanton Lodge 202 met Sunday, November 4, 2001 at 3 p.m. at the Jourdanton State Bank Community Room with twenty members and two guests present. President Jeff Barta presided. Youth Club Assistant Secretary Shawnie Wagner posted the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Silence was observed for deceased members and those who perished in the "Attack on America."

All officers were present.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes and correspondence. Treasurer Melba Novosad presented the financial report.

Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Director Bob Bayer and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates were special guests.

Mission 2100 and new incentives were discussed. Eye glasses are being collected as a statewide SPJST pro ject.

Lodge will donate $100 toward the purchase of a flag pole for the new Jourdanton Library and Community Center.

President Barta will book the lodge meetings at Jourdanton State Bank for 2002.

Youth Leader Kathy Wagner reported the Youth Club donated a fichus tree on "Make A Difference" day to the Longhorn Museum in memory of those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Youth Club will present a skit at the Christmas party.

Christi Circle of Women reports on November meeting Corpus

On November 1, 2001, 29 regular members, two honorary members and five guests met at Sokol Corpus Christi.

Our guests were Dorothy Berner, Bud Duplessis, Duane McAlister, Adriana White and Joe Nemecek.

Clem Kasparek had the coffee brewing when I arrived and the tables and chairs had been set up as well. Dorothy McCoy soon followed with colorful turkeys, pumpkins and little hay stacks for centerpieces. She placed these on all the tables, making the room quite festive.

Standing in for President Helen Kasparek, Vice President Frances McDonald led us in the Pledge of Allegiance then "My Country 'Tis of Thee" was sung. After introducing our guests, she asked for a moment of silence in mem-

ory of Marcellina Mokry who passed away October 22, 2001. Funeral mass was celebrated October 25 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church with interment following at the Sinton Cemetery in Sinton, Texas. Marcellina was 93 years old.

Marcellina Mokry, joined the Krouzek in November of 1992 at which time we first met. After a meeting, I noticed her standing in front of Sokol as I was leaving. I pulled over and asked if she was waiting for a ride and I learned she had called a cab. I insisted she cancel the taxi and I drove her home. From then on, I drove her to and from meetings unless her daughter, Dorothy Klapuch was in town and drove her. Driving Marcellina was a real pleasure. I enjoyed speaking a little Czech along the way and loved seeing her beautiful yard with flowers blooming profusely no matter the season. She also had a large vegetable garden with all sorts of veggies she gladly shared. Such a variety of flowers, shrubs and plants and hanging baskets. Even the garage was filled.

Marcellina seemed to always have a door prize for the Krouzek. If not, then she donated a beautiful potted plant, an apron she had made or a jar of something she canned. Her strudl was great.

I admired Marcellina very much and am grateful for the nine years she was my friend. Donations to the Krouzek were made in her memory by Norma Baker, Becky Elzner, Margaret Kolodziej, Dorothy McCoy, Marion Peterek, Ella Simcik, Lillie Hayek, Lil Hruska, Rosalie Williams, Clem and Helen Kasparek, Jerry and Milly Elzner, Della Elzner, Dorothy Berner, Dolores Pollok, Betty Jurica and Anna Marie Moss.

flowers from the Krouzek on Wednesday, October 31, the day before our meeting. She was released later that afternoon and I am happy to say is doing fine. Milly said they would continue visiting any member in the hospital and taking them flowers. We are fortunate to have them accept this responsibility.

A card of congratulations on our 10th anniversary was received from the Dallas Circle of Czech Women. It contained a very nice donation which is much appreciated. It was signed by members present at their meeting which makes it mean so much more.

We thank them for their warm wishes.

Jerry Elzner brought pictures taken at our September and October meetings.

There were pictures of Lil Hruska and her birthday cake taken in September for which we received thank you cards from Lil and both of her daughters, Evelyn in Kingsville and Doris in Houston. The October pictures were of our anniversary cake and October birthday girls.

Helen Kasparek shot a whole roll of pictures at our anniversary dinner, many of which will go into our scrapbook. Betty Jurica, keeper of our scrapbooks, has a big job and she does it well. I gave her a clipping from the Vestnik showing Lil Hruska being presented congratulations from Governor Rick Perry by Jerry Elzner. I also gave her a picture and article sent in by Jaroslav Skopal, President of Prerov, Czech Republic, with Jerry, Milly and Della Elzner and Margaret Kolodziej that was published in the American Sokol.

Dorothy McCoy announced it is once again our month to furnish baked goods for the residents of Sunnybrook Nursing Home. She asked members who wish to participate to bring their donations to Sokol at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 15.

Edna Voldan showed one of the lap rugs made for nursing home residents and asked for donations of material to make more.

We voted to bring household items to our December meeting for the Ronald McDonald House. Our last effort on their behalf was a huge success and I am sure this year's will be, too.

Circle of Czech Women report on November meeting Dallas

Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky, Bertha Malik led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Donnie Genzer, nephew of Lydia Pavelka and Sidney Bridewell.

Bertha welcomed 16 members and four men guests. It was good to see Lydia Pavelka at the meeting.

Bertha said she had an e-mail from Faye and she said she, was unable to attend the, meeting she is still in therapy and she is doing better. She hopes to attend the December meeting. Bertha asked her about the book and she said that she and Bill decided to have the

Bertha said we may have to start over.

Bertha wanted everyone to check the information in our old book and make any corrections and if you have an email address to write it in. She said she would work on it.

Acting Secretary Evelyn Cechan read the minutes of the October meeting and they were approved as read.

Viki Kohn gave the treasury report and it was approved as read.

Bertha Malik membership committee reported all members are paid. It was good to see Bertha back. She and her family enjoyed their annual vacation in October at Sea Isle City, New Jersey.

Sunshine Lady Georgia Brozek sent a get well card to Gilbert Kalich, husband of Bessie Kalich. She read a thank you card from Evelyn and John Trojacek. She said to thank everyone for the cards and being there for her at the time of her need. Vicki and Bessie said they called and talked to her and she is still hurting and her heart is heavy in the loss of her son, Allen Wayne Henzen. We signed a thinking of you card and hoped it would help to let her know we were thinking of her.

Our prayers and thoughts are with her and her family Georgia also said she had a telephone call from Helen Parma to warn us if someone calls on the phone wanting you to donate to the firemen or policemen funds do not give to them.

The firemen or policemen do not call on the phone for donations.

Georgia had an anniversary card for Vicki and Jerry Kohn who celebrated their 55th anniversary. The members signed it and Bertha gave it to them.

Bessie said she and Emil celebrated their 59th anniversary and Bertha said she did not know it and we will send them an anniversary card. Sorry, Bessie.

Bertha gave a report oft he Heritage Day at the State Fair. The weather was beautiful. The kolaches were good and the dances and costumes of the different countries were beautiful. Bessie said she had four Beseda circles and 20 kiddies dancing from SPJST Lodge 84 and everyone enjoyed seeing them.

The kiddies were so cute.

Congratulations to Vlasta Jurcik, Queen for the Day; Julius Podhrasky King for the Day; Evelyn and Henry Cechan were the longest married couple; and Philip and Melanie Podhrasky were the youngest married couple.

Fraternal Council meeting is November 12, 2001 at SPJST Lodge 84 at 7:30 p.m. The next meeting will be December 3, 2001 at Lodge 84 for the Christmas party. At 7 p.m., Sokol Zizka will celebrate its 90th anniversary on December 3. There will be dinner and dance to the Melodion band.

Bertha read the birthday celebrants for October and Bessie Petr led us in singing, "Happy Birthday." Bertha said she would check with Faye and see if she has been sending the birthday cards. If not, Bertha would send them.

Libbie Elsik made a motion that Krouzek buy a coffee pot with the money we made for the catering job.

This was seconded and we voted to buy

one. Bertha said she would take care of this.

Lydia Pavelka said the telephone committee was not calling the members of any deaths or news. Bertha said we had a telephone committee consisting of Evelyn Cechan, Carlyn Ondrusek, Joyce Ehrenberger, Sidney Bridewell, Eileen Jakubowski and Faye Wright.

Joan Maca said she would take the job of calling the committee when anything of importance that the members need to know of We need to call Joan of any news.

Our Christmas party was discussed.

A motion was made that we have it catered. Bessie agreed to cater it. We also asked for stuffed chicken breasts and the rest of the menu is up to Bessie including the dessert.

Lydia Pavelka made a motion that the Krouzek pay for the members dinners. If you bring a guest, the cost will be $7. Vicki needs to know by November 30. It was also voted on that we take dinners to the shut-ins or those who are in nursing homes.

Bertha asked who would come over Wednesday, December 5 about 2 p.m. and set up the tables for the party.

Our donations were discussed. We voted to give a donation to the Veterans Hospital gift shop in memory of Marie Toberny; Meals on Wheels, Ronald McDonald House; battered women and SPJST Scholarship fund. The money we collect instead of a gift will go to the Czech Doctors fund of the South West Medical School. Don't forget your envelope and donations for the Christmas party.

Donations were made in memory of Allen Henzen from Lydia Pavelka; and in memory of son, Jerry Frank Maca and brother, Jerry John Maca from Joan Maca.

Lydia Pavelka read an article from President of Czech Republic Vaclav Havel. He said they were shattered by the events of September 11, 2001 in the United States. He said on behalf of his country and its citizens, he would like to express our deepest sympathy to all the victims and their surviving families and he would like to assure the American people that they on our side and are ready to assist America in any way in their power. He understands this to be an attack against democracy. Prague declares September 14 as a day of mourning.

Hostesses for October were Eileen Jakubowski and Georgia Brozek for Margaret Klecka.

We adjourned with our quotation, "Mej to se vzdyck, radi"—"Always Love one Another."

Our "do vyhry" gifts were drawn and passed out. We enjoyed a delicious covered dish luncheon.

Don't forget our Christmas party December 6 at 10 o'clock for visiting and then our dinner will be at 12 catered by Bessie and Emil.

We voted not to have a meeting in February because Bertha will still be in the Czech Republic. Our next meeting will be March 7, 2002.

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy The members of Lodge 6, Cottonwood express their sympathy to the family of MRS. MARIE PLUNKETT, 83 of Whitney who died Sunday, July 8 at a Waco hospital. She was born May 6, 1918 in Hill County the daughter of Clifford and Ide Lackey McDonald. She married Walter A. Plunkett December 17, 1938 and he preceded her in death February 3, 1984. They farmed many years in Abbott. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Cliffie Mae Davis.

She worked as a seamstress at Malouf Holmes Manufacturing. She was a member of Missionary Baptist Church in Whitney and a member of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood since 1967.

Survivors include Kenneth L. Harwell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Andy Anderson officiating. Burial was at Vaughan Cemetery.

Mr. Haskovec, 79, died Saturday, October 21, 2001, at the IOOF Nursing Home in Ennis.

He was born August 11, 1922 in Ennis, the son of John E. and Pauline Novak Haskovec. He was reared in Boyce and Telico and was a graduate of Telico High School. He then began working for Sears. He was later employed by Ennis Business Forms as a pressman. On May 24, 1952, he was married to Margaret Gerich. After their marriage they lived in Ennis. He was employed by Date Documents for 10 years then returned to EBF for a total of 25 years. He retired in 1984.

He was a member of St. John Catholic

Church, the SPJST, Sokol, WFLA and the IOOF. He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Ennis; daughter, Diana H. Krueger of Ennis; sister, Georgia Harris of Ennis; and two grandchildren, Kory T. Krueger and Kristina Krueger.

Bessie grew up in Pleak, Texas and lived in Houston over 60 years.

ROBERT A. SCHULTZ, 81 of New Ulm, Texas who passed away Sunday, October 28, 2001 at 4:20 a.m. at the Bellville Hospital with his family at his bedside.

Robert was born to Robert G. and Lydia (Maurer) Schultz in Somerville, Texas on June 2, 1920. He was baptized on March 21, 1921 at Salem Lutheran Church in Welcome and confirmed June 9, 1935 by Pastor Mansur at Salem Lutheran Church in Welcome. Robert attended schools in Washington County and attended Blinn College in Brenham. He was united in marriage to Ruth Mae Frnka on June 15, 1946 at St. PauIs Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham.

They lived in Houston for 35 years where he and his wife owned several successful businesses. Robert and Ruth retired and moved to New Ulm in 1971 where they spent many happy years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in New Ulm, New Ulm VFD, Sons of Hermann Lodge 70, New Ulm, Austin County Farm Bureau and the SPJST Lodge 88 in Houston.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Leroy Schultz.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruth Schultz; son, Jack Schultz; daughter, Kathy Lynn Easterling; three grandchildren, Janice K. Schultz; Robert and wife, Kim Edwards, Randy Easterling; three great-grandchildren, Jacquelyn N. Marshall, Amanda K. Schultz, Karissa M. Edwards; two sisters, Elda Mae Reichle and Beulah Feist; numerous nieces, nephews; cousins; and a host of friends.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 31, 2001 from St. John's Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Reverend Bill Mosley officiating.

District One Youth Counelor reports on Fall Fun Day

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club members earn top honors

Dear Readers, On Sunday, October 21, 2001, Lodge 39, Bryan hosted the District One Fall Fun Day at Lodge 17, New Tabor Hall. Approximately 100 members and guests attended. The day's events included needlework, horseshoes and bingo for the adults and the Christmas Ornament contest, a hayride and a visit to Happy Tails Miniature Donkey Farm for the youth.

Many thanks to Binnie and Ronnie Roesler for providing the trailer and hay for the hayride. The day concluded with a wonderful hot dog supper served by the ladies of Lodge 39.

Youth from all four youth clubs in the district entered the Christmas Ornament Contest We had a total of 36 entries. The winners were:

SPJST Statewide Camp. . . . Are You Interested?

Dear Members, The SPJST is planning to host its first-ever State camp on Friday, April 5 to Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Greene Family Camp in Bruceville-Eddy, Texas, which is near Temple. The camp is open to all SPJST members - both active and non-active - and adults are invited, too. Details are still being finalized, but the approximate cost will be $100 per person.

The Supreme Lodge is graciously providing a portion of the funding, and they also created a dynamic incentive for youth members. Beginning August 1, 2001 through March 1, 2002, the Supreme Lodge will pay $12.50 for each written application referred by a youth member to be used towards that youngster's camp fee at the State Camp. So, if a youth recommends eight friends who join SPJST, the youth will attend state camp at no charge!

These referrals must be submitted on a recruiter card.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club enjoys Czech Heritage Month activities Dear Readers: October was another busy month for the youth of Lodge 17, New Tabor.

After our monthly meeting on October 7, we went to the Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum in Caldwell.

Mrs. Helen Jurica and Mr. George Hlavinka took us on a tour of the old Polasek house that has been turned into a museum.

There were a lot of interesting things in the house. I liked the old wood cook stove and the way they had the room fixed up like an old Czech kitchen.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club Welcomes Victoria Motley The Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club welcomes its newest member, Victoria Kelli Motley.

Victoria is six-years old and attends kindergarten at Sam Houston Elementary School in Ennis.

She is a life long member of Lodge 25 where her mom is the youth leader and her memaw is the president, so she has been an active member since birth.

Tori's first lodge function was the fall meeting where she helped her fellow youth members work the white elephant sale and the bean bag toss and she had a lot of fun.

Tori along with the other youth from the lodge also sold USA merchandise, donating the proceeds to the Afghanistan children. She has also attended youth achievement days in the past and is looking forward to participating in YAD as well as summer camp this coming year.

Tori is an avid soccer player who and was on the Sidekicks team this past summer. She loves drawing and learning in school. We look forward to seeing her in the lodge and other activities in the future.

Everyone that went had a good time and learned something about our Czech Heritage. October was Czech Heritage month.

Our Beseda dancers were invited to dance at the Slavic Heritage Day Celebration at the Brazos Center in Bryan on October 14. After listening to some Czech singing, we went outside and danced for the crowd. We then toured the museum exhibits. Afterwards, we went and bought some sausage rolls and something to drink.

It was fun.

We also had Fall Fun Day and a District One Lock-in in Dime Box that was a lot of fun. We are making plans for our Christmas Party and Lock-in and participating at the lodge's memorial service and Christmas social.

State Youth Director invites members to "make an angel" Dear Members and Friends, While people all over the world are deeply sorry for the loss of so many lives in the United States on September 11, 2001, we're also sad for the families and friends of those who died.

As soon as Americans heard about the tragedies, they rushed to give blood and make donations to help the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and others working to aid the victims' families.

At times like this, everyone wants to help and show his support, so we're joining a nationwide effort to remember those who died on September 11. I hope you'll take part, too. Created

by Clapper Publishing of suburban Chicago, The Angel Project is an activity in which people are invited to make ornament-sized angels in memory of the victims of this national tragedy. During Christmas week, the angels will be hand-delivered to New York City for a special The Angel Project memorial service.

Through The Angel Project, people can pay tribute to those who have died and, by creating something with their own hands, help themselves heal from this heartache, too. Although not everyone can deliver condolences in person, all Americans can send a message from their hearts through these angels.

Kalich House Visitor Center Dedicated Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center Executive Director Woody Smith, front and center, cuts the ribbon, marking the grand opening of the TCHCC Visitor Cetner in La Grange.

TCHCC dedicates visitors center in La Grange Czech Heritage Day at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc., (TCHCC) La Grange, was celebrated on October 21 with the grand opening of the Kalich House Visitor Center and an afternoon of Czech music provided by the Melodion Band from the Czech Republic. The event began on the grounds of the recently restored and renovated Kalich House.

Under a beautiful sunny sky with just a hint of crispness in the air, the setting looked very much like a Czech family gathering at a garden party with Wallachian music filling the air.

Czechs came from all parts of Texas for this historical event.

Following was the dedication of the U.S., Texas and Czech flags. Three TCHCC Directors, Pat Parma of Richmond, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Marek of El Campo and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bezdek of West donated the flag poles to the Center in honor of their Czech heritage and also as a memorial. Carolyn Meiners and Robert Ermis led the singing of the U.S. and Czech anthems and the Texas State song.

TCHCC Director Marvin Marek had served as the coordinator of the restoration of the Kalich House. He subsequently recognized all of the many volunteers who had contributed thousands of hours to wash, scrape, move dirt and paint—always with the determination to make the house the first completed structure to represent the home of Texas Czechs.
