Lodge 84, Dallas member reports: "First impres!- ions can be appealing. by Carole Faraizl All my life I've been reading the accounts of others and trips to what is now the Czech Republic — never imagining that I, too, would one day be able to give my version. After 59 years, now I can! In July, my cousin, Elaine Gallagher, escorted 28 relatives, including my mother, Carolyn Nemec, 85, my son, Adam Faraizl. 23, and me on a 14-day tour of the land of our ancestors. In preparation for the trip, we gathered up our old and new family photos and more than 200 family postcards — some more than 100 yearsold — to see if our relatives could identify some of the names and faces that we didn't recognize. Before we took the trip, 14 days seemed a long time; however, as we were to discover, the time just flew by.

Having a Good Time! Texas observes Czech Heritage Month in October. That doesn't mean you can't start celebrating in September. Pictured above, Norma (Novotny) Morley of McPherson, Kansas and Leroy Hovorka of Caldwell, Kansas dance at Lodge 92, Fort Worth's Czech Heritage Day celebration on September 15 at National Hall. Leroy and Norma are King and Queen of the Midwestern Polka Club of Kansas. As such, they do a lot of travelling, promoting goodwill and polka music along the way. "We met so many nice people in Texas — warm and friendly people with open arms,' says Mr. Hovorka. See related photos on page 8. A
