Feel the Spirit Fraternalism - the basis upon which our Society was founded - is all about being a good neighbor.

People living and working together.

Sharing the good times and providing support in times of need. In an active lodge, shared experiences lead to a sense of belonging and a sense of obligation.

It's that spirit - fraternalism that keeps lodges on the map, long after the aura of organizing and chartering has faded. It's realizing that fraternalism - like any serious devotion - takes time and it takes work. For some members, involvement in the SPJST is just as much a part of life as going to church, work or school.

The lodge offers an outlet for meeting cultural and social needs and addressing the civic needs of the community.

There's no fast and easy route to building a strong fraternal benefit society. It requires an ongoing effort to remain relevant in the lives of our members and the communities we seek to serve. Every week in the Vestnik, we read about what the SPJST and its lodges are doing to achieve these ends.

It's impressive. This weekend alone, there are several big events to pick from, including Czech heritage celebrations at Lodge 92, Fort Worth and Lodge 84, Dallas; the District Six Barbecue Cook-Off in Victoria; and District Fall Fun Days in District Two and District Five. See pages 18 and 19 and the Family Fun calendar on page three for additional listings.

Quite often,you'll find our most active members involved outside the lodge in other civic, charitable, educational, religious and cultural pursuits.

You know the old saying, "One good thing leads to another." That brings to mind the recent Westfest and Caldwell Kolache Festival where SPJST members turned out in droves - either as organizers or as attendees. Watch for related photos in a coming issue.

Being involved in an active lodge can help us to achieve balance and connection within our communities. It

fosters community connections outside of our immediate families, providing us with networks for socializing, conducting business and for nurturing.

The SPJST. You get out of it what you put into it. Get involved and give it your best. Affirm the dignity of your fellow members and don't be surprised when something good happens to you!

Recruiter of the Month

Congratulations to Insurance Department Administrative Assistant Doni Powell who was recognized as the SPJST Home Office "Recruiter of the Month" for August. Sister Powell generated 17 sales leads for the Insurance Department to forward to local lodge sales representatives. For her initiative, she receives a half-day of vacation and the "Recruiter of the Month" parking space at the SPJST Home Office. Home Office personnel generated a total of 81 sales leads in August.

Hats off, too, to all of our local lodge members who have been making referrals during the Mission 2100 Membership Drive. Through the end of August SPJST members made a total of 1,112 referrals for membership. See page four.

Through the end of August 2001, the SPJST had received applications for 1,163 insurance certificates. Over the same period, a total of 1,106 insurance certificates were issued. The goal of the 2001 Mission 2100 membership drive is to write at least 2,100 applications in 2001.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Mission 2100 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year 2001. In most cases, the lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

SPJST records 1,112 referrals through August in Mission 2100 program The SPJST's Mission 2100 program is a year-long campaign, calculated to generate at least 2,100 applications for membership in the Society by year-end. "For Mission 2100 to succeed, we must involve all levels of the SPJST towards achieving this energetic goal," said SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride in an article which appeared in the January 10 Vestnik.

Around the Districts Lodge 177, Academy hosts District Two fall meeting September 16

year in Taylor at Lodge 29 should remember how much fun everyone had with the cake walk. Youth club members will assist again this year, and we may have two cakewalks if we have plenty of cakes.

District Two Members, Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 16, 2001 at 2 p.m. It's Fall Meeting —ftm day — time!

This year's fall meeting will be held at Lodge 177, Academy. We're really excited about having our fall meeting there this year. Thanks to the officers of Lodge 177, Academy for agreeing to host our meeting and assist the district with meeting plans.

Here's a list of activities planned along with a meeting agenda:

Christmas Ornaments Both adults and youth can enter this contest. (See rules below.) Last fall, we had several adults enter and boy, were there some beautiful and "creative" ornaments. Remember, that all first place youth ornaments will be hung on the youth Christmas tree at the SPJST Home Office. We will award prizes to first, second and third place winners in the adult category, uod/be same to each age category in the youth entries.

Country Stores Tickets for the games will be sold this year at 10 tickets for $1 (no free tickets will be given). Please bring two food items per person for the country stores. The country stores seem to be areal favorite activity for both young and old alike and we're happy to provide them again this year.

Cakewalk Please bring one cake (or more if you like) for our cake walk. Those of you who attended the fall meeting last

Silent Auction Our youth will again provide us with a very entertaining silent auction. It seems the adults have a lot of fun "trying" to outbid each other! Best of all, all monies goe to a good cause— the district youth fund. Thanks to Patsy for organizing this again this year.

No store-bought finished ornaments or pre-assembled kits.

2. Must be present to win.

3. Ornaments must be member's own creation.

4. Overall size for ornament must be no larger than six inches, excluding ornament hanger.

District Two adults, youth invited to enjoy Six Flags trip on October 13 Dear Members, The annual District Two trip is planned for Saturday, October 13, 2001. Buses will depart from the SPJST Supreme Lodge at 7 a.m. promptly headed for Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. We will leave the park at 10 p.m. (closing time) and return to Temple between 12:30 and 1 a.m. Advance tickets are $24 (tickets at the gate are $44).

Due to a new ruling at Six Flags, there are no refunds on tickets. Tickets purchased must be used prior to December 31, 2001. I have ordered some tickets and can purchase up to 25 more at the discount price upon arrival.

Due to the change, I am asking those planning to join us on the trip to please pay the $24 prior to September 29.

All SPJST (youth and adults) are invited to attend. Friends and family who are not SPJST members will be asked to pay $10 for the bus ride and the price of the ticket. In case of bad weather, each ticket holder will have their ticket to go at their convenience.

We will try and re-schedule a time, but unfortunately, it will be by car.

We have three buses reserved and what fun it would be to have all three filled. Hope to hear from you by September 29.

District Five Family Fun Day September 16 at Lodge 172, Pasadena The District Five Fall Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2001. The host lodge will be Pasadena Lodge 172 at 3609 Preston Street, Pasadena, Texas, phone (281) 487-3297. We will have a short business meeting.

Registration for contests will start at 10:30 a.m. for the Youth Christmas Ornament Contest. Please note that entries in the Pastry, Needlepoint, and Craft competitions must all be handmade. We have also added another game. There will be a "42" tournament so bring your dominoes and partners and win a prize. This will be a family fun day so bring your fraternal brothers and sisters and your friends. The agenda appears below.

The District Five Royalty will present their speeches during the lunch

period along with performances by some of the youth, under the direction of District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton.

So, bring your favorite pastry, cakes and pies, etc. Also bring your favorite covered dish. The meal will be roast beef and will furnished by District Five. Don't forget to bring your door prizes and bingo prizes.

The door prizes will be awarded every hour or so. From 2 p.m. until ?, there bingo will be played under the direction of Clara and Johnnie Broz.

If any pastry is left over, it will be auctioned.

Their float will represent different sports celebrants. They are to meet at Moody at 8:30 a.m. The youth participated in the District Three Lock-in at Peaceable Kingdom in August. They will go swimming on August 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the YMCA. The youth are to bring snacks then they will work on grandparent's gifts for the Moody Nursing Home and for lodge grandparents. The birthday cake was brought by Kimberly Culliton and the game by Nick Culliton. Youth first place door prize winner was Sara Wallace and second place winner was Makayla Yates.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi planning November fund raiser As I write this, we are receiving some much beneficial rain. In the past three days, we have received over four inches of real nice, slow rain.

Everyone is happy.

At our August meeting, we agreed to once again participate in Make A Difference Day. We will join forces with Sokol Corpus Christi to do what is needed to the hall and grounds. We look forward to this day. A lot is accomplished in a very enjoyable way.

We will also be having a fund raiser for the Czech Heritage Society of South Texas. The Majek Band will play and the Panna Maria Polish Dancers will come to dance for us.

We will also be having a raffle, country store and the kitchen will be open to serve various foods. All this is happening on Sunday, November 11. You will be hearing more about this.

One of our faithful members, Lil Hruska, will be celebrating her 90th birthday next month. Sister Lii still drives and is very active. Sister Li!, we wish you a happy birthday and many, many more.

Remember, October is Czech Heritage Month. Ask your mayor to proclaim this in your city. We will be asking most cities in south Texas for this proclamation and will send a reminder to 254 county judges!

We want to thank State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates and District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer for coming to our lodge to hold a seminar. Much was learned. Thanks a lot.

Corpus Christi reports on August meeting The regular monthly meeting was called to order by President Jerry Sijansky. The roll call of officers showed all to be present except for Vice President Anna M. Moss who was absent. After the Pledge of Allegiance, all remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Sister Elizabeth Moore Wilkerson.

The minutes of the July meeting were read by Secretary Helen Pavelka *and approved as read, as was the financial report given by Treasurer Milly Elzner which was approved.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner gave his report stating on a number of topics. One is the fund raiser on November 11 by Lodge 79 and Sokol Corpus Christi. There will be a dance, music by the Majeks Orchestra door prizes, raffle, country store. He asked for donations of items

We have received a list of members whose addresses are incomplete.

The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, September 16 at 2 p.m. after which there will be the usual svacina.

There were four door prizes — three donated by Brother Jerry Elzner and one, a jar of pickles, donated by Sister Helen Sacky. The winners were Clem Kasparek, Joe Nemecek, Frank Sijansky and Jill Sijansky.

extends invitation to Czechfest September 16 Dear Members and Friends, It is Czechfest time on Sunday, September 16 at Lodge 84, Dallas.

You all come! It's going to be a great fun time for all. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. A delicious Czech dinner catered

by Sister Bessie Petr will be served 12:30 to 2 p.m. The menu includes pork roast, dumplings, sauerkraut, green beans, salad, rolls, coffee/tea and dessert. The cost is $7 per adult and $3.50 for children, 12 and under.

There will be booths, games, prizes and dancing. As always, we hope you will support this once-a-year benefit.

We will have a pastry booth and the popular cake walk.

Please donate pastry for these and also for dinner.

The gift booth usually has home canned pickles, okra and dill cabbage, jelly, plants, crafts and many other nice items. Any donation will be appreciated. The lodge teen club will run the country store. This is always a fun corner for all. Do donate canned goods, meats and cold drinks. There will be other booths/games also.

Pasadena reports on August meeting The Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed was led by First Vice President Weldon Wilkerson.

The meeting was called to order by President Robert Mayfield at 7:30 p.m.

Secretary Josephine Mayfield called the roll. All officers were present. Trustee Norman Tofte was absent.

President Mayfield welcomed our guest and visitor Aubroy Hoyms, Lynn Johnsen, State Field Representative for Districts One and

Wednesday, September 12, 2001—VESTN1K/9 Robert wished everyone with a birthday in the month of September a happy birthday.

President Mayfield informed everyone that the Supreme Lodge sent a reminder about the by-laws. It stated, "Every lodge has the right to elect a delegate for the convention on a numerical basis from its membership according to the following scale. For 20 to 100 members over 16 years of age—one delegate. For each additional 100 members, one additional delegate if the lodge achieves its insurance goal for its members' goal: if goal not reached, for each additional 150 members, one additional delegate".

Our lodge base membership amounted to 821 and our 2000 member amounted to 811. We will need to increase this count by 15 percent over a three-year period. Our lodge will have until December 31, 2003 to achieve the 15 percent increase in premiums or 15 percent increase in membership.

Guests Deliver Messages Robert asked Lynn Johnsen to say a few words. Lynn stated that our quota for the year is 30. As of date, we have 12 new members. Lynn asked that a motion be made to accept Jorge Aguirre, Olivia Alexander and Melissa Alexander. Motion was made by Brother Zella to accept Jorge, Olivia and Melissa as sales representatives for our lodge. Brother Wilkerson seconded the motion. Motion approved.

Robert then asked Melanie Zavodny to say a few words. Melanie told us that Adeena Reyes is interested in being a youth club leader. Melanie told everyone that the Supreme Lodge will give Adenna and our lodge $500 to start the youth club.

Robert also asked Larry Pflughaupt if he would like to say a few words.

Larry stated that out of the $3,000 the district director receives every year to donate to a worthy cause, he has given $1,500 to the Danbury Little League to replace the burned out concession and $1,500 to the World War II Memorial in the Heights. He asked Adeena to stand up and he gave her an SPJST necklace inscribed "Reach for the Stars." Larry told Adenna that it was given to her to say thank you for taking on the job as youth leader and welcome aboard.

District Meeting This Sunday Robert told everyone that District Five held a meeting at our lodge on

August 11. It was decided that we would serve roast beef at the District Five Fall Meeting on Sunday, December 16 and that we would ask the members to bring a covered dish and dessert. We are also asking for door prizes and prizes for bingo. Our lodge will furnish the plates, silver, napkins, teas, coffee, lemon aid and one keg of beer. One drink soft drink ticket will be provided to the young people. Additional drinks are to be purchased. Likewise, adults will also receive one ticket for a cup of beer.

They will be electing someone to be District Five Vice President. We need three people to be judges for the different contests — Christmas Ornaments, Pastries and Needlework.

Registration will start at 10:30 a.m.

The meeting is from 11 to 11:30 a.m., followed by the social from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and dinner from 12:30 to 2 p.m. We will also have lessons on tarok and 42. Games will include bingo, dominoes and tarok. Robert said that we would be needing help both in the bar and to help cook the roast.

Robert informed everyone that when he checked the July bank statement, he noticed that we were being charged $15 a service charge. He called the bank to find out why we were being charged the $15 service charge. He was told that since the account was under $25,000, they have to charge us the $15. Robert said that he called Tennie and they decided to move the $15,000 to the $25,000.

Robert told everyone that they needed to be thinking of who they want to nominate for officers and committees next year. He also asked if the members if they would like to change the workday form September 3 (Labor Day) to August 31. After a short discussion, it was decided to make August 31 our work day.

Robert stated that it was time to give our flood victims the money collected by the Supreme Lodge to help them out. Robert asked Tennie Walla and Tony Tucker to come and receive their checks. Since Tony had to work, his wife, Cathy, sat in for him. Each member received a check in the amount of $316.79. Motion was made

by Sister Zella to nominate Adeena Reyes for youth leader. Sister Johnsen seconded the motion. Motion approved.

The question was raised as to where Brother Wilkerson will send the $600 we made at the garage sale. It was

Melissa Johnson and Irvin Janak Exchange Wedding Vows Melissa Ann Johnson and Irvin Paul Janak, both of Round Rock, were united in marriage at 7:30 p.m., June 30, 2001 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Austin.

The bride is the daughter of Carl and Helen Johnson of Port Worth and James and Linda Dority of Azle.

The groom is the son of Johnnie and Rita Janak of Smithville.

The bride was presented in marriage by her father, Carl Johnson.

Father Keith Koel and Deacon Frank Fikac performed the ceremony.

The bride wore a long, white Aline dress with beaded spaghetti straps and an applique decorated train. She carried a cascading bouquet of colorful fresh flowers including plum and white roses, white oriental lilies, white stephanotis and lavender and purple freesia.

Matron of honor was Nikki Magee of North Richland Hills, sister of the bride.

Bridesmaids were Cynthia Sandall, Becky Widlowsky, Brenda McCarley, Alisa Bates and Shannon Aiken. They wore satin, two-piece, sleeveless, floor-length dresses which were eggplant in color. They carried nosegay bouquets with clusters of sterling roses, cream lily aziatics and pink alstromeria.

Rusty Williams of Smithville, the groom's best friend since childhood, was best man.

Groomsmen were Shawn Janak, Marc Beck, Jeff Hannusch, Scott Pear and Mark Hofferek. Ronald Janak, Troy Schuelke, Mark Vinklarek and Tim Harmon were ushers.

Ring bearer was Blake Sandall decided that it would be sent to the president of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum.

Door prize of $10 was won by Jo Mayfield. Lodge 177, Academy reports on August meeting

District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt presents newly-elected Lodge 172, Pasadena Youth Leader Adeena Reyes with a token of appreciation during the August lodge meeting.

Our meeting was called to order on Wednesday, August 8 at 7:40 p.m.

Janet Lyon, Youth Leader and Joanne Hutka, Lodge Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC), were absent at the meeting.

Music was provided by Karen Lawson, Paula Post, Kerry Blackman and Gordy Glaze, members of the church's band and choir.

The selections included, "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High", "I Will Be Here," "Wherever You Go", "On Eagle's Wings" and "Love Song for a Savior".

The natural ambiance provided by the newly renovated stone and marble church, along with the evening light through the stained class called for no more than a few white bows on the pews and brass candelabras on the altar.

A reception followed at the church's Parish Activity Center. The hall was decorated in white, eggplant and silver. The bride's cake was French vanilla with a strawberry filling. It had four staggered tiers decorated with fresh flowers and burning candles on top of each tier. The groom's chocolate cake was decorated with a golf course theme.

The bride is a 1988 graduate of Azle High School and has a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Texas in Austin. She is an education specialist for Austin Radiological Association.

The groom is a 1983 graduate of Smithfield High School. He is a certified safety professional and works as a loss prevention consultant for Texas Municipal League.

After a honeymoon in Los Cabos, Mexico, the couple will reside in Round Rock.

Melissa is a member of Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

Martha Garcia sent us a thank you for the cards and flower she's received from her knee surgery.

We're happy to have Libbie, Irene and Martha back with us—healthy! We missed each one of them! They're all very special to us at the lodge.

Orsak Reunion In December of 1869, Joseph Orsak with his wife, Apolona and daughter, Anna, age two left Karlovic, Moravia for Galveston, Texas to settle in Fayetteville, Texas. The descendants of this Czech family will gather at the American Legion Auxiliary Building on October 21, 2001 at 10 a.m. or earlier. built in 1912 and which closed as a school in 1975. The Seaton School was the last remaining rural school in Bell County when it closed. It is located on Highway 53 approximately eight miles east of Temple. A portion of the school property currently serves as the Seaton Community Center. The initial phase of the restoration project is to replace the windows in the School building. Other restoration work such as replacement of electrical wiring, plumbing, painting will have to be done as funds become available.

Sale This Saturday The Restoration Committee is planning another gigantic garage and bake sale for September 15, 2001 from', a.m. to 5 p.m. at the School. The garage sale held in June was very successful in that some much needed funds were raised and persons interested in the restoration project had an opportunity to see the interior of the building and to discuss the planned restoration with Committee members.

Youth Letters Section District Two campers and counselors enjoy Camp Val Verde Dear Readers, Once again, District Two had a fantastic, fun camp. Our camp began on July 20. Forty-six campers, ten LITs, chaperones and staff "survived" Camp 2001 at Camp Val Verde.

Everyone enjoyed our yearly activities of swimming, horseback riding, crafts and hiking. Our schedule included some free time for campers to just enjoy being with old friends and getting to know our new campers.

Friday evening, our younger groups enjoyed the most popular "Shaving Cream Fight." Within only a few minutes, identities were unknown. Editor Brian Vanicek was on hand to take pictures. Within seconds, a leader captured his camera and his battle began. I think he enjoyed the shaving cream more than the campers did.

Saturday morning began with the younger groups getting involved in the challenge course. The groups worked great together and learned that with teamwork, you will survive.

Saturday afternoon, the older groups, LITs and some leaders enjoyed the challenge of the ropes course. Camp Val Verde has some excellent certified instructors. We thank you for your care and patience. Everyone seemed to really enjoy having the challenge course back again. We hope to be able to do it again.

Survivor Games We broke in to six survivor groups Saturday evening. Each group received a colored bandana. We then began our "Team Survivor Challenge." Each group went to different stations set up with the team with the best time/score receiving points. Some of the games included the memory game, critter pick-up, a kite-making contest, Frisbee relay, treasure hunt, tow the line, blind man's trust among others. One of the most interesting challenges was the tasting wheel. Who says young campers will not taste anything?

Tonight, your dinner may include sardines, oysters, pig's feet or prunes.

Some brave campers got lucky and had to try gummy bears. Thank you to Assistant District Youth Counselor Janet Lyon and my niece, Tracy Klusacek for the many games and challenges they put together to make it so interesting and so much fun.

This year we had 13 new campers, three new chaperones and three new LITs. Tracy came up with a great initiation for these brave new souls.

Everyone enjoyed watching the initiation, especially when it was new leader, Trey Richter's turn. He really got the brunt of the initiation. Thank you all for being such good sports.

On Saturday evening, we had our usual cookout at the river. We all enjoyed the hot dogs. Thank you to all the leaders for helping out. We always enjoy the cookout. It's a time for groups to mingle and hang out with all the other campers.

On Sunday, we continued our survival games along with our usual activities. Our LITs did an excellent job in planning and putting on the night hike for Sunday evening. I understand it was the best we've had in years. Thank you, LITs, for your teamwork.

A Wonderful Experience We had a fantastic camp this year.

Everyone seemed to have a great time. The best part is we had no injuries. I want to thank first of all the campers. You were all great! Our District Two youth are wonderful.

Everyone gets along so well. All participate and are so well mannered.

These compliments come not only from me, but also from your chaperones. Thank you, parents, for allowing these youth to be a part of SPJST. LITs, what a great help you are!

You definitely showed your leadership skills. Your campers look up to you. I thank you for your ideas and your motivation. LITs are Crystal Bartek, Janet Baca, Lisa Greger of Lodge 47, Kristen Bartek, Jordan Lyon, Courtney Wagner and Sara Wagner of Lodge 177 and Andy Baker, Ryan Greger and Kyle Penn of Lodge 24. We were so pleased to have two former SPJST LITs as our lifeguards, Jessica Lyon and Erin Skrabanek. These young ladies not only showed their expertise as lifeguards, but also as leaders and jacks of all trade. They helped out in so many ways—even at Taco Bell.

Thank you, ladies.

We thank our nurse Katy Richter who also helped in many areas.

Katy's husband, Trey was . a new leader this year. Both are new members of the SPJST. We thank you both for taking time out of your busy schedules to join us. Katy and Trey left this past week for the Bahamas where Trey will be attending veterinary school. We will miss you both at camp next year, but look forward to you joining us when you return to Texas. Best of luck, Trey! Thank you, State Youth Director Melanie and husband, David, for visiting with us. As always, we look forward to seeing you both and appreciate all you do for our youth.

Of course, camp would not be possible without our devoted chaperones.

These adults take time from their jobs to make sure our youth are will taken care of. Fond Farewell Camp always seems to go by so quickly. Monday always comes too quick—even at camp. We say our goodbyes to everyone and then comes the hardest part: Saying goodbye to those youth who have just spent their last year as campers. I do hope you will follow in the steps of many of us and return as chaperones. Best of luck to Ryan Greger, Kristen Bartek, Sara Wagner and Sara Kostiha. Each one was presented a 2001 Camp pillowcase signed by all the campers and leaders.

Last, but definitely not least, thanks goes to my two wonderful assistants, Janet Lyon and Carol Tallas. They worked so hard before, during and even after camp. It's so great to have so much support from two super, super assistants and friends. I do hope each of you had as much fun at camp as we did in preparing and being at camp. Only ten more months and we'll be there again, having a great time.

while others enjoyed a cool swim in the pool. A nature hunt throughout the West Texas Outback was an adventure for some while others played with the horseshoes and washers. A cute gumball machine was created in the craft segment along with a plastic boat each camper made to play with in the pool. The members of the "Big Daddies and Company" tribe enjoyed a fishing outing in addition to some fun times on the basketball court. One segment for all of the groups included a time in the "Party Barn" to create a poster with their tribe name, add pieces to a "Survivor" puzzle, create a drama scene they would portray at the party, and blowing up balloons for the party to be held on Monday evening.

During all of the these activities, the tribes were also earning "Survivor Points" with nametag checks, flour baby checks, being the first tribe to the flag ceremonies in the morning and evening, and probably the most fun one was the "Survivor Hug." When the command "Survivor Hug" was given, the tribes had to get in a circle with their arms linked. The first tribe that could do this, and be silent, won a "survivor point".

There were 27 campers and five leaders rushing around frantically to join together to try to earn this point.

The "Crocodile Chicks" and the "Cobra" tribes shared honors with receiving these points. For some reason, the "Devils" tribe had difficulty with this challenge.

Tales and Treats It was unanimous that the favorite activity for the campers was the horseback riding. Four campers "survive" and thrive on West Texas outback

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, September 12, 2001 snacks, the younger campers were off to bed to rest up for the next day's activities. The older campers stayed up until the wee hours learning a new card game called, "Oh, Well" one evening and participating in a flash light scavenger hunt the next evening.

Camp was such fun as we mingled with the turkeys (with one person even walking just like them), geese, peacocks, chickens, rabbits and wart hog as these animals wandered around the campgrounds: All enjoyed petting the horses, goats, longhorns and even a buffalo. In addition, we had a fun time with our bunko game, water balloon toss, and full-fledged water fight.

It started as a "sponge throwing" contest that ended with bucketfuls. But with the 100-degree temperatures, the water felt great.

Wednesday morning each group took a hike and each person had to find a rock. The rocks were then washed and dried.

In our afternoon session, the rocks were painted. We had some very good designs and color combinations.

These rocks are now ready to be used as paperweights, door stops or just to be admired.

The More the Merrier In the evening, we had our campfire and initiation. We invited the other guests staying at the ranch to join us. We now have a few honorary members in our youth program.

Thursday morning was more horseback riding, swimming and we had a games session. The facilities provided tetherball, ping-pong, volleyball, horseshoes and lots of board games.

After lunch, we took our group to West Texas Outback. It was the final farewell for Neil Block who was the Cascade Caverns in Bourne, attending his last camp. We will miss Texas. Miranda Hale is a true spelunker. She was always trying to get him next year!

We had lunch by the pool and it was then time to load the bus to come home. Everyone had a great time.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Youth Club enjoys summer swim party Dear Vestnik Readers On Sunday, June 24, 2001, Lodge 4 Hallettsville Youth Club members celebrated Adam Siptak's graduation from high school at Splashway in Sheridan Texas. Adam has been an active youth club member since the age of seven, having served the youth club as president, treasurer and various other officer positions.

After swimming, we enjoyed delicious grilled hamburgers prepared by James Vanek and his helpers, Joe Siptak and Phillip Vahalik.

Good Job! The District Six Youth Achievement Day (YAD) was held on July 8, 2001at the Inez Community Center. Our youth club did extremely well both in the crafts and the talent and progressed to state. We had several third place winners at state, namely Josh Siptak, Nicholas Vahalik, Christopher Vanek and Jonathan Vahalik and one first place winner, namely, Holly Scott. Also advancing to state competition was Nicholas Vahalik as king of District Six—congratulations. State competition was held at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple on August 4.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club member enjoys membership Dear SPJST Vestnik Readers, I have had fun being an SPJST member. I have not been a member for very long, but it's been a good experience. I got to go to Temple for the State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) competition. Jake Holland and I represented District Three as king and duke. Jake won first runner-up as king. My science project about tigers won second place. I sure was excited.

I will always remember this great day.

I have also been enjoying the youth meetings here in Ennis and look forward to them each month. I am so happy to belong to such a great club!

Youth Club notes membership growth Dear Vestnik Readers, On August 19, 2001, Lodge 39, Bryan held its meeting. After a delicious lunch provided by the mebmers, the youth club held its meeting.

During the meeting, the youth members and officers discussed a fund raiser and electing committees. After the meeting, all of the members completed the August Vestnik project and did a craft. The youth club is proud to report that we now have nine youth members!

Youth Club reports summer activities Dear Readers, The June 20, 2001 meeting of Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club was called to order by Christina Joseph.

Alex Graska lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

There were six members and six adults present. We discussed District Five to be held on July 1 at Lodge 196, Houston-West. We also discussed camp which will be held between July 17 - 20. Dues were also paid this month.

There were three youth members with birthdays this month - Dustin Anderson, Krystle Bender and Brian Graska.

Moody Gardens Visit On June 28, we had 10 youth and four adults who went to Moody Gardens. We left early in the morning and didn't return until late in the afternoon. Both of our new members were able to attend and they had a great time.

We saw an imax. We did the imax ride, saw the butterflies inside the but-

terfly pyramid, and saw the different exhibits. After we did all this, we ate lunch then everyone went swimming.

Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to another outing soon.

District Five YAD Results District Five YAD was held on Sunday, July 1, 2001 at Lodge 196, Houston-West. Club's membership drive on Saturday, September 15, 2001 at 10 a.m. until 12 a.m. This special event will be held at the National Hall SPJST 92 located on Roberts Cut-Off in Fort Worth.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to meet new friends and also become acquainted with the SPJST Youth Program, which is open to youth, ages six to 18.

Czech Heritage Day begins at 10 a.m. They will have Risckey's Bar-BQue. Live bands throughout the day to dance to. At 2:30 p.m. the Youth Club, along with Lodge 92, will host a carnival with a bounce house, dunking booth, cotton candy, snow cones, games and more. This will last from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. At 4 p.m., we will take all the youth indoors for a cakewalk, with an explanation and video of the youth program. Our very own State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny, will provide this program.

I would love to have you and your friends become SPJST Youth Club members. Come out and see what SPJST Youth Club is all about and become an active member so you may enjoy more of what SPJST has to offer.

Make plans now to observe Czech Heritage Month The clock is ticking! It is time to get on the bandwagon and start thinking about what can be done to honor the heritage of this state's Czech descendants.

During the 74th Legislature Session 1995, House Resolution 83 and Senate Resolution 1023 were passed designating the last full week in October beginning in 1995 as Czech Heritage Week in Texas, signed by Governor George W. Bush.

In addition, on July 1, 1999, the 76th Legislature of Texas passed a resolution signed by Governor George W. Bush declaring the month of October annually be Czech Heritage Month in Texas commemorating the contributions of Czech culture to the State.

This special month of October is to be celebrated annually as the "Czech Heritage Month in Texas" giving the Czech Americans an opportunity to remember and to commemorate our rich heritage and reflect how proud we are of our Czech heritage, at the same time paying a special tribute to our ancestors.

The month of October was chosen because of its historical significance— Czechoslovakian Independence was proclaimed on October 28, 1918.

This special month of October of each year will give us an opportunity to remember and commemorate our rich Czech heritage. Here are a few ideas: w- Speak with school superintendent and principals informing them of Czech Heritage Month. Suggest that aspects of Czech Culture be included in the curriculum..

Paint or sketch posters or cut out illustrations of the Czech Republic and display them in classrooms, halls, libraries, downtown shops, malls and bulletin boards.

Display the Czech Republic flag with the U.S.A. and Texas flags whenever possible.
