Half-Time Report There are so many self-help books on the market these days — a virtual sea of good intentions. Where do you start? If anyone's listening, I'd strongly recommend a new title that I ran across at the library last week. It's called Take Control and it's written by Michael Janke, -a former Navy Seal and consultant to various Fortune 500 companies.

Plain and simple, it's a practical guide for improving performance with an emphasis on discipline and self-control.

"The self-disciplined person moves deliberately each day toward something specific," Janke writes. "Self-discipline is not related to punishment. It is pure sustained self-control.

Through recorded history, self-discipline has been responsible for the improvement of all mankind . . . It has allowed average men and women to overcome tremendous obstacles in their personal journeys to happiness, wealth and success. It builds character, self-esteem, morals, courage and honor in everyday people."

Reading Mr. Janke's book prompted me to consider my own situation at home, at work and in my local lodge and the power that making "right choices" can have.

"The ability to choose what is better for us, instead of what is easier on us, comes from the process of building up our self-discipline," writes Janke.

The first step in this process, he says, is determining what it is you want in life. Makes sense. It's also a good question to ask from time to time in our local lodge meetings.

"What do we want to do as a lodge that can make a positive difference for our members and for the communi ty?" By answering this question and then focusing time and energy on the reply, lodge activities take on clarity and purpose.

But as we all know, simply wanting something isn't enough. "You must define, focus and schedule specific actions that you will take to have what you desire," directs Janke.

Again, as that applies to our lodges, how seaworthy your vessel is depends on various factors and situations. The good news is it's never too late to rebuild your ship. How your lodge is sailing at this point is a direct result of the kind of cargo you are hauling and your crew's ability to set goals and navigate.

"The process of, mastering self-discipline is like that of rebuilding a ship.

It enables us to throw out all of the

harmful and useless junk, fix the leaking holes and install a new and powerful navigation system that will take us swiftly to meeting our goals," says Janke.

Of course, building a lodge into the kind of organization that people want to join and be part of takes more than reading a book and talking about selfdiscipline. It takes a spark of creativity and a ton of persistence.

The SPJST is mid-way through the Mission 2100 Membership Drive.

What about your lodge? Are you where you want to be at this point? If you are — that's great. Keep up the good work. If you aren't, there's no better time than now — at halftime — to regroup. The old adage "you are what you think" is one of the basic laws of human nature. Apply the power of discipline to program your lodge for success and happiness in the second half. In the words of Michael Janke, "Think positive and optimistic thoughts, and good things will happen."

Get Well Wishes SPJST Home Office management and staff extend their wishes for a speedy recovery to Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir, who experienced the rupture of an abdominal aneurysm on.

Friday, June 29. Following surgery, Brother Kacir is on the road to recovery. As of this writing, he was expected to be out of the hospital in a day or two. Until he is back in the office, well-wishers may direct their cards and notes to the President's Office in care of the SPJST Home Office.

Recruiter of the Month Congratulations — for the second month in a row — to Insurance Department Administrative Assistant Doni Powell who was recognized as the SPJST Home Office "Recruiter of the Month" for June. Sister Powell generated 23 sales leads for the Insurance Department to forward to Weal lodge sales representatives. For her initiative, she receives a half-day of vacation and the "Recruiter of the Month" parking space at the SPJST Home Office. Thanks, too, to other Home Office personnel who generated leads during the month. A total of 81 leads were generated by SPJST Home Office in June. Please see member leads totals generated through June on page 5.

SPJST records 801 applications through June in Mission 2100 program Through the end of June 2001, the SPJST had received applications for 801 insurance certificates. Over the same period, a total of 714 insurance certificates were issued. The goal of the 2001 Mission 2100 membership drive is to write at least 2,100 applications in 2001.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Mission 2100 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year 2001. In most cases, the lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth colurnn,"Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with active youth clubs and reflects the number of applications written for members between the ages of Q and 17. "Youth Club" totals will be applied toward the lodge's total quota.

An asterisk (*) denotes that the lodge does not have a youth club. The sixth column "Lodge Incentive Count" reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through June 30, 2001.

SPJST records 785 referrals through June in Mission 2100 program The SPJST's Mission 2100 program is a year-long campaign, calculated to generate at least 2,100 applications for membership in the Society by year-end.

To help achieve the objectives of the Mission 2100 program, several incentives are being offered.

Members who make referrals that result in written applications will be recognized as follows: • Recruit One Member - Name in Vestnik.

From Our Readers Article triggers recollections of words from the past Dear Members of SPJST, In my whole lifetime, I have written one — maybe two — letters to the Vestnik, but I have been Vestnik reader for many years. In a recent issue of the Vestnik, I read an article written about the cookbook Sylvia and John Lorinc had compiled of Slovak recipes.

The recipe that really caught my eye was the one for halusky (dumplings.) My mama, Terezie Janak Dornak, used to make them for our dinner (noon) meal on Fridays and, yes, she always called them halusky, but often times our friends and we would compare our Czech words for different things. I remember one of our friends telling me that his family called dumplings, zisky. Well, I started laughing and told that person that if my mama would have told me to bring her some zisky, I would quickly bring her some corn cobs. Ha! That also brings to mind another word — clothes pins. We always called them klinky, My mother-in-law, Mary Prda Tymrak, called them kramelky and a friend told me they called them zapenaky.

And there was a variety of names for potatoes also. We called them kobzole. Other folks called them brambory or zemaky.

Maybe some of our Vestnik readers would write to the Vestnik and give us their variations of some of their Czech words. _ I am not sure that I have spelled the Czech words correctly as I had no formal schooling in reading and writing of the Czech language. I only know

My mother subscribed to Pritel Ditek magazine and so every afternoon when it was nap time, my mama would read stories from the Dedska Besedka to me and I guess that is the way that I learned to read and write the Czech language even before I started to public school. I do not recall writing the language that early in life, but my folks subscribed to the Novy Domov and Nasinec and I was encouraged to try to read from them!

I still enjoy the Czech articles in the Vestnik and sincerely hope that you will continue to print the Czech section in the Vestnik every week.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville and Fayette CHS enjoy annual picnic SPJST Lodge 1, Fayetteville and the Fayette County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas met Saturday, June 23, 2001 at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill for their annual combined picnic. Happy to report that it did not rain on this year's picnic and approximately 30 attended the covered dish affair which included one out-of-state guest from California, daughter of Ben and Georgia Hrachovy.

A business meeting was held after lunch.

Correspondence was read which included a thank you note from President Howard Leshikar acknowledging Lodge l's donation to the "100 Pennies Scholarship Drive and the SPJST" Lodge Incentive Update Report with Mission 2100 quota of 10. Members were urged to help meet the goal of 2100 applications this year.

District Director Reports District One Director Donnie Victorick and wife also were able to attend the picnic this year. He stated that SPJST's last rating had dropped from A+ to B+. This does not indicate there is something wrong with the company, but the need to sell more HAPPY GRADUATION

Mr. Victorick also stated that the SPJST supports efforts to Czech culture and had donated $2,500 to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center at La Grange last year and will continue to give the same amount each year for the next three years, amounting to a total of $10,000 over the four-year period.

Kim Kovar of SPJST Lodge 1 presented the SPJST Scholarship to Kimberly Minarcik, Salutatorian of the Fayetteville graduating class of 2001. Kimberly is the daughter of Alvin and Brenda Minarcik and granddaughter of Bernadette Kovar and Henry and Mary Ann Guthmann.

After the meeting, a drawing was held for the lovely door price donated

by Mannie Fritsch which was won by Katie Blaha Reaux of Brookshire, Texas. A motion was made and passed to have next year's picnic in April, 2002 instead of June with hopes that more people would be able to attend.

The next meeting will be held in September at the Divin Camphouse at Ellinger.

66, Waco reports on June meeting Lodge

Organizers are calling the 2001 Cotton Festival a rousing hit, as the small central Texas town hosted its annual festival honoring the cotton industry.

In addition to the parade and vehicle displays, the community hosted arts and crafts vendors, shoppers, barbecue cook-off and live entertainment.

The meeting was called to order by President John Engelke on June 17, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall, Elm Mott, Texas. All officers were present with the exception of Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz. There were 29 members present as well as four guests, Damon, Travis, Wesley Perez and Tom Weeks. Please do come back to visit again.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and Motto.

Engelke had members stand for a moment of silent prayer for our deceased members Frank J. Knapik, Jessie Briggs, Gregory Pavlicek and Madeline Webb.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the May 20 meeting and they were approved as read. She also read correspondence from State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Gladys Yates about a District FAC meeting on June 18. at Linden Hall at 6:30 p.m.

President Engelke reminded members of the hall clean-up on Tuesday June 19 at 6 p.m. We need all the help we can get.

Chairman of the Board Brother Johnnie Gaidusek reported that the board met on June 7 and had Secretary of the Board Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of that meeting.

Jana Vaculik of Lodge 54, West to participate in Miss Czech-Slovak USA contest Jana M. Vaculik, a member of SPJST Lodge 54 in West, will represent the McLennan-Hill Czech Heritage Society of Texas at the Miss Czech-Slovak USA contest in Wilber, Nebraska. This event will be held in conjunction with the 40th Annual National Czech Festival Days on August 3, 4 and 5.

Jana will be among 15 outstanding young ladies from across the nation to compete for the title.

Last year's Czech Heritage Society contestant, Rebecca Podsednik, won Miss Congeniality. The purpose of the national pageant is to preserve the pride and culture for young ladies of Czech, Moravian and Slovak ancestry. These young ladies are proud of their heritage and are actively involved in both their ancestry and ethnic background. The contestants are required to compete in various categories of the contest. These include a personal interview by judges, introduction and interview by the Pageant Master of Ceremonies, costume presentation and talent competition. The winner will be crowned the 2001 Miss Czech- Slovak USA Queen and will receive numerous gifts including a trip to the Czech and Slovak Republics. Many other awards are presented for divisions of the pageant.

Jana is the daughter of Jan and Marcela Vaculik of West; the granddaughter of Ludmila Vaculik and the late Karol Vaculik of West and Marie Thalova and the late Josef Thal of Ceska Lipa, Czech Republic. She was a 2000 honor graduate from West High School and is currently a journalism major at McLennan Community College. She is also the Reporter for the McLennan-Hill Chapter and a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Press Club and Deans List honoree. This fall she will be the Editor-in-Chief of. the Highland Herald, MCC's newspaper.

Coming Soon Chairman of the Entertainment Committee Gladys Yates reported that the committee met on June 7 with one member absent. Today, hamburgers and hot dogs will be served members bringing desserts. For the July 22 meeting, members are asked to bring sandwiches and the committee will furnish desserts. She also reminded members that she needed cakes for Youth Achievement Day (YAD). There will be a barbecue dinner served at YAD with all the trimmings. Members will clean up the hall afterwards. Sister Gladys also reported that on July 25 and 26 a bus

Chairman of the Cheer and Condolence Committee, Sister Bonnie Pruitt had Sister Emma Ceska report on get well cards and sympathy cards sent. She sent get well cards to Irene Mueller, Bonnie Pruitt, Mary Lou Urbanek, Louise Matus, Emil and Bessie Petr, Lawrence Hessel and Jeanette Smith. Sympathy cards were sent to the family of Jessie Briggs, the family of Gregory Pavlicek, to Tony and Doris Glatter on the death of her brother-in-law, and the Roland Webb on the death of his wife, Madeline.

Youth Club Report Assistant Youth Leader Diana Engelke gave the youth club report due to Youth Leader Debbie Galler having to leave for a short time. She reported that there were nine youth, seven adults and three visitors from Lodge 92 present. They were Damon, Travis and Wesley Perez. She reminded the youth of the hall clean-up on June 19 at 6 p.m. The youth will practice on June 23 at 2 p.m.

Sister Diana reported that today the youth will present fathers with their gifts. She also reminded the youth that the camp forms and conduct forms will need to be turned in to Sister Bessie Petr by June 24. The camp dates are July 13 thru the 16.

Sister Diana reported that the youth sent get well cards to Emil and Bessie Petr. The youth will go swimming on July 1 at 2 p.m. at the West Swimming Pool. There will be snacks after swimming.

The youth will deliver bingo gifts to the Moody Nursing Home. Today, the birthday cake was brought by Douglas Galler and the game by Dakota Yates. He also stated that August 4 is State YAD in Temple; 3DC band will perform for a dance at Linden Hall on August 4 with a charge of $5 per person; and the District Three Lock-in at Peaceable Kingdom on August 10, 11 and 12.

State FAC Gladys Yates reported that her son, Larry, lost everything in the Houston flood. She said that the flood damages were a terrible sight.

79, Corpus Christi honors dads on Father's Day Lodge

The dinner on June 17 honoring all fathers was delicious. Thanks to members bringing side dishes and desserts. There was a large variety of good food. Thanks, ladies, for getting the dinner ready and the clean up afterwards. The attendance of members could have been better. We had one guest, Joe Levek, brought by Brother George Marek for him to enjoy the day with friends.

After the meal, the regular monthly meeting was called to order at 1:50 p.m. by President Jerry Sijansky. All the officers were present. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Sister Rosalie Nemec and Sister Wilma Ulene Popp.

The minutes for April and May meetings were read by Secretary Helen Pavelka and approved. Also the financial report by Treasurer Milly Elzner for April and May was given and accepted.

Correspondence was read including a thank you from Haloflight for our donation in May. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner gave his report covering several topics.

President Jerry Sijansky thanked Brother Joe and Sister Lera Nemecek for getting the chicken for the dinner.

The June donation of $50 was given to local Red Cross for aid for flooding in Houston and extra donation of $50 was given to the Salvation Alloy for aiding people in Houston.

87, Temple reports on July meeting Lodge

The monthly meeting of Lodge 87, Temple was held at 7 p.m. on July 12.

Seventeen members were in attendance. Chili dogs were enjoyed by all for our Father's Day meal. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Thelma Groppell, enlivened us with questions concerning our growing-up relationships with our fathers.

Lodge rental deposits were discussed and plans were made for our next meeting, July 10, to have a watermelon supper!

Our meeting was concluded by watching the second half of the VCR movie, "How to Prevent Hardening of the Attitude."

Our congratulations to each of you! You members can help the sales people by giving them names of anyone interested in getting insurance or belonging to SPJST.

Leland Hensley had a massive stroke and was in intensive care for over a week. He is a little better and we all hope he keeps on improving. Leland and Dorothy were on the Entertainment Committee for many years, Leland usually being vice chairman.

Our Birthday Club started long ago as a social club, but soon started making money which they gave to the lodge. The club does much for the lodge. They have charge of the pastries on special events and hold raffles, to name a few. The club grew to a large membership and used to have luncheons on the first and second Wednesdays of each month. As members got older, they have cut it down to only one luncheon on the second Wednesday when they also have their monthly meeting. Their luncheons are always very good! Their officers are: President Flo Orsag; Vice President Evelyn Zajicek; Secretary Ellen Miculka; Treasurer . Mary Quider, Ticket Chairlady Bessie Dewer, Sunshine and Work Recorder Dona Clooney, Chaplain Helen Hegwood, and Telephone Committee Margie Anders, Margaret Bohac, Evelyn Mikolas and Julie Kinnamon.

Kimberly Zatopek and Bob Owen were married on a cruise that went from Florida to the Carribean and 35 of their relatives and friends attended the beautiful wedding. Among the guests were Helen and King Hegwood, Vernon and Chrissy Hegwood, Vivian Hegwood, David and Vicci Huble and Elsie O'Brien who came from Alaska to be on the cruise (all members of Lodge 88). They all had a most wonderful time on the seven days cruise!

Dear Reader, Lodge 97, Placedo held its annual Family Fun Dinner on Friday, June 22, at the Victoria REA Building. Lodge 172, Pasadena June meeting report After a delicious meal President Robert Mayfield called meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. Roll call showed everyone present.

President Mayfield introduced our guests Lynn Johnson, State Field Representative for Districts One and Five; Gladys Yates, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator; and Adeena A Reyes and Robert W. Peterson, Jr., who are prospective sales representatives and members, pending acceptance by Supreme Lodge.

There were no errors found in the regular meeting minutes, they stand approved as printed. An error was found in the executive meeting minutes after correction was made. They stand approved as printed.

Taxes Reduced Robert read - a letter from Christopher Lee Hrabina requesting the $100 graduation gift. Since Christopher is a dues paying member in good standing, he will receive a check for $100. He also told everyone that he had received a letter from Frank and Associates stating that he has gotten our taxes reduced and saved us $1,787.73. He also read a letter from the American Cancer Society.

Vice President Weldon Wilkerson told everyone that he would be meeting with The Rose at the Lodge on July 5. He also stated that he needs everybody's work sheet tonight if they don't have it they can call him or Robert and give them the information.

by July 1.

Financial Secretary Henrietta Krenek stated that she has made a $6 deposit giving us a balance of $1,296 for June. She also stated that we had

one new member. He is Tony Tucker.

A motion was made by Brother Zella to accept Tony Tucker as a new member. Brother Hrabina seconded motion. Motion approved. She also stated that we had two death claims, Lucille Jackson and Josephine McCoy

Due to, the flood, Treasurer Tennie Walla did not have a treasurer's report this month. As everyone knows, Tennie got flooded out during tropical storm Allison.

Co-chairman Mike Johnson stated that we had eight members show up for the workday. They mowed the lawn, changed batteries in emergency lights, and swept the dance floor.

Women cleaned the popcorn machine.

The next workday is July 2.

Entertainment Chairperson Jo Mayfield stated that on June 2, they had 240 people attend the dance and the band was The Roadrunners. She told everyone that the Aces High Band that was supposed to play that night. They gave her a call at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning and told her that they had disbanded. After calling several bands, she got a hold of the Texas Roadrunners and he was glad to play for us. She also told them that the Aces High band was supposed to play December 1, so she sent them a certified letter telling them that she has cancelled their contract for the month of December. To date, she had not received the receipt. She has hired a band called The Kountry Showcase Band. This band has been playing at the Manvel Opry for many years and band was recommended by one of our members.

President Mayfield wished everyone with a birthday in the month of July a happy birthday.

Robert stated that April Air has put in the new air conditioner and now we have another air conditioner out. It was suggested that if we continued to

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Member Judy Jaksik Receives Honor Judy Tymrak Jaksik of Corpus Christi, Texas was recently honored by being nominated to receive the Jefferson Volunteer Award. The Jefferson Volunteer Award is a national awards program spearheaded by the American Institute for Public Service and was founded in 1972 by the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, former U.S. Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Samuel S. Beard, former associate of the late Robert F. Kennedy. Their goal was to establish a "Nobel Prize" for outstanding community and public service. Judy was one of the 49 other volunteer nominees to receive this honor sponsored by the Corpus Christi Caller Times and Kris Communications of Corpus Christi on April 27, 2001.

Judy has been a member of SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton, Texas for more than 50 years. She is the daughter of Jourdine Dornak Tymrak and the late Joe Tymrak, both long time residents and business owners of Jourdanton and also members of SPJST Lodge 202.

Wednesday, July 11, 2001—VESTNIKJ11 rent the hall, we will have to replace the air conditioner so that it won't be too hot for the people. A motion was made by Weldon Wilkerson to have April Air replace the air conditioner for the $3,360—the same price he charged for the other air conditioner.

Motion was approved.

Robert stated that he had received a bill from the Czech Culture Society stating that our membership has expired. The membership dues cost $150. After a short discussion, it was suggested that we renew our membership. A motion was made by Sister Dressler to renew our membership to the Czech Culture Society. Brother Wilkerson seconded motion. Motion approved.

Guest Presentations Robert asked our guest-speaker to say a few words. Lynn Johnsen told us about our two new potential sales representative and members. Robert also asked Gladys Yates to say a few words. She told everyone about the ad valorem tax bill that is in the governor's office. It has not been signed, but is expected to pass. She stated that we need to keep real good records so that we can show the IRS that we are a charitable organization.

Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Weldon Wilkerson asked Gladys if she would hand out the Everyday Hero pins.

Robert stated that the lawn mower needs to be repaired or replace the drive shaft—it is worn out. Robert asked Jimmy Weidig to go with him to the mower place to see if he can get parts for the mower and try to repair it.

LAM Fund Raiser Planned President Mayfield reminded everyone that last year, we talked about a fund raiser to raise money for the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. We talked about having a garage salt. It was decided that we would have the garage sale on Thursday, August 2 and Friday, August 3 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bobbye Johnson presented Tennie Waller with the envelopes that were collected for her to try to help her out since she lost everything in the flood.

A reminder that the next work day is Monday, July 2; the next executive meeting is Wednesday, July 11 at 7 p.m.; and the Wednesday regular meeting is July 25 at 7:30 p.m.

SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin recently donated $500 to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 Activity Department.

The gift enabled the facility to provide six fun-filled "heritage days" for the residents and staff. The festivities coincided with National Nursing Home Week which was in May. Each day the residents and staff wore clothes and ate foods of the day's theme. The decorations were

In Memoriam In Memory of Anna Slovacek Holubec Anna Slovacek Holubec, 101, Taylor, died Friday, May 11, 2001 in the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home.

Born at Ladysmith, Wisconsin on April 26, 1900, she was the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Holan) Slovacek. On June 26, 1923, she was married to John Holubec.

Mrs. Holubec was a member of the Taylor Brethren Church and the SPJST Lodge 29.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson; one brother; and four sisters.

On November 2, 1948, she married Nelben Hejl who preceded her in death on November 5, 1999.

A lifetime resident of the Noack and Thrall area, she was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and attended school. Mrs. Hejl was a loving mother, grandmother, and homemaker, and will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Henry, Herbert, Walter, Louis and Amos Zieschang.

Survivors are a son, Ronald Hejl and wife, Diana of Thrall; grandchildren, Donna Hejl and fiance, Davis Baldwin of Austin, Kyle Hejl of Austin and Kelly Hejl of Thrall; sisters, Ester Ruth Lange of Lake Jackson and Rosalie Krueger of Noack; brothers, Clarence Zieschang of Noack and Al Zieschang of Taylor; special niece, Wandeen Finn of Coupland; sister-in-law and brotherin-law, Marion and Glenn Trayler of Corpus Christi; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tours. Rosary was recited Monday, June 4 at 7 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 5. The Reverend Isidore Rozycki was celebrant. Burial followed at St. Martin's Cemetery.

Brother Gregory was born in Hillsboro and lived in Tours most of his life. He graduated from West High School and TSTC. He was employed at Hillcrest Hospital in Waco for 20 years and the last six years he worked with McLennon County in maintenance and refrigeration. He enjoyed hunting and driving race cars.

Gregory was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church, KJT Society 31 and an SPJST Lodge 66 member since May 1963.

Survivors include his parents, Joseph and Stella Pavlicek of Tours; one daughter, Laura Pavlicek of West;

In Memory of Dan Sladek Uncle Dan Sladek, age 74, lifetime resident of Taylor, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at his home.

Mr. Sladek was born in Taylor on November 27, 1926, the son of Villibald and Mary (Veselka) Sladek.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and had been employed with the Texas General Services Commission for 15 years until his retirement.

Mr. Sladek was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Legion and the SPJST Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lee, Ted, Edward and Jerry; sister, Margie Threadgill Zycha; and nephew, David Threadgill.

Memory of Eddie Victor Bubenik In

Eddie Victor Bubenik, 82, of San Angelo went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 18, 2001.

He died in San Angelo Community Medical Center after a brief illness.

Eddie was born September 28, 1918, in Veribest to Otto Bubenik and Frances Strakos Bubenik. He was one of seven children and grew up on a farm, learning the trade from his father.

The only time he spent living away from this area was during World War II when he served in the U.S. Air Force, spending much of that time stationed in the South Pacific.

Eddie was married to Evelyn Joyce Motl on November 18, 1946, in this church. They had a son, Chris Bubenik of Wall, who has carried on with the family farming operation, and a daughter, Joyce Piland, also of Wall.

Eddie loved to see things growcotton, milo, wheat, livestock and his family—everything except weeds.

His fields were always some of the cleanest around with the straightest rows. He and his wife, Evelyn, lived near Wall and farmed side-by-side in the Wall and Veribest communities for many years before retiring and moving to San Angelo in 1991.

He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, the Wall Volunteer Fire Department, Wall Young Farmers, Knights of Columbus, SPJST Lodge 160 and the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

For the past several years, Eddie battled numerous major health problems, but through it all never became bitter. His gentle, sweet nature and pleasant smile will always be remembered.

He was a hard worker, and for many years one of his best friends was his John Deere tractor.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Jackie Bubenik; son-in-law and daughter, Tim and Joyce Piland; grandchildren, Chance Ames and wife, Mary Helen, Danny Piland and wife, Peggy, and Jessica, Chase and Patrick Bubenik; two great-grandchildren, Selena Ames and Anton Aitches, both of San Angelo; two

brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Betty Bubenik of San Angelo and Julius and Deloris Bubenik of Houston; two sisters, Mary Havlak of San Angelo and Lillie Pechacek of Kingsville; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Pagel of San Angelo and Lorraine Motl of Houston; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services for Ben Zajicek, 91 of Bellville were held on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. from Knesek Brothers Funeral Chapel with Reverend Michael Groseclose officiating. Interment was in the Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville. Serving as pallbearers were Henry Grawunder, Harold Remmert, Herman Zander, Marvin Ulcak, Wilroy Peschel and Milford Gross.

Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Bellville VFW post 6522.

Ben Zajicek was born on August 6, 1909 in New Ulm Texas to parents John and Katherine (Kovar) Zajicek.

He was raised in the Nelsonville area and attended Nelsonville and Oak Hill Public Schools. On February 18, 1945, he married the former Miss Evelyn Pomikal in Bellville. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant. After returning home, he worked for Mosher Steel Co. as a structural Fitter for almost 30 years. In 1969, he was very honored to join the Bellville VFW post 6522 with his son, Larry.

The first Father Son duo to join at the same time. He was also a member of the Nelsonville Bleiblerville SPJST. Mr. Ben Paul Zajicek died on March 17, 2001 in Bellville.

Ben is survived by his wife of 56 years, Evelyn Zajicek; daughter, Jo Ann Remmert of Bellville; son, Larry Zajicek and wife, Diane of Deer Park; sisters, Marie Huff of Bellville and Ella Lehmann of Austin; grandchildren, Kristi Rernmert, Amy Willhite and husband, Grady, Kelli Remmert, Heather Miles and Kevin Remmert; a number of nieces, nephews; special friend, Marvin Ulcak; two little special friends, Jordon and Brady Zapalac, who sent him candy on special days; and special neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Wilroy Peschel and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and. Katherine Zajicek; sisters, Toni Ueckert and Angela Riechle; brothers, John Zajicek, Jr., William Zajicek and Edwin Zajicek.

Funeral services were held under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Homes, Bellville, Texas.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood youth donating cans to day care center Dear Readers, We held our meeting Sunday, July 1.

We had ten members present and one guest. Our youth leader congratulated all of us on a good job that we did in talent and with our crafts at District Three Youth Achievement Day. All reports by the officers were given at the meeting and they were all in order.

Logan attends kindergarten at Caldwell Elementary and is Logan Jones a member of New Tabor Brethren Church. He enjoys swimming, fishing and sports.

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje youth leader reports on June, July meetings June Meeting On Sunday, June 11, 2001, El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 held its Family Day. The youth brought items for a raffle that the youth club sponsored. All of the youth attending worked very hard selling raffle tickets.

The youth would like to thank everyone who brought items for the raffle and they would like to thank everyone for purchasing raffle tickets.

Everyone's help was appreciated.

After the adult meeting, the youth club held their meeting. The youth then made beaded necklaces and some youth made Father's Day cards that were taken to a nursing home. The youth club congratulated Chase Holub and presented him a graduation gift for graduating from El Campo High School. During the day, the youth enjoyed eating a fried chicken dinner and many desserts.

The youth were given their new SPJST youth club handbooks.

The youth then made red, white and blue construction paper kites with beautiful red streamers. They also made miniature red, white and blue construction paper "Uncle Sams" inscribed with Happy Birthday U.S.A! The young people thought that it was a great way to help celebrate Independence Day. After the meeting, refreshments were served.

Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club members attend spring meeting On May 20, 2001 I went to the District Seven Spring meeting at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in San Antonio. The Czech Heritage Society of Texas will hold a Genealogy Workshop and State Meeting on Friday evening and Saturday, July.20 and 21 in Caldwell, Texas. Both events are hosted by the Burleson County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society and will be held at the Burleson County Fair Exhibition Hall in Caldwell located on Highway 36 South.

Registration of $25 per person covers all events including the Saturday noon meal. If you wish only to attend the state meeting on Saturday and participate in the noon meal, the meal ticket is $6. Chapter presidents should submit a count of those members attending only the state meeting and the noon meal. The registration deadline for the Genealogy Conference is July 12.
