Annual Update The SPJST Board of Directors' Annual Report appears on page four of this week's Vestnik. Thanks to the directors and to the Office of the Financial Secretary for preparing and sharing this report with SPJST members.

On that same note, every year, I also look forward to sharing the annual communications report with you. After reading through it, you should have a good idea of how this area performed last year and what we're planning to achieve through the remainder of 2001.

As in past years, publishing the Vestnik and providing communications support to SPJST management and lodges were our major functions in 2000. A total of 50 issues of the Vestnik were published last year. This marked our eighth consecutive year of publishing the Vestnik without missing a deadline with our publisher, Hill County Press in Hillsboro, Texas.

A review of 2000 printing and postage costs provides a more complete look at Vestnik operations in 2000. The Vestnik incurred printing expenses of $43,596.42 in 2000.

This amount represented a 26 percent decrease from $58,775.53 in 1999.

This was the Vestnik's lowest net annual printing cost in ten years.

This decrease can largely be attributed to fewer subscriptions being mailed during the early part of 2000 and savings resulting from in-house typesetting and layout procedures.

The in-house scanning of photographs was added to this process in 2000. Advertising revenues — which are backed out of the printing costs — remained consistent with those of the previous years and also contributed to the Vestnik's lower printing costs.

Vestnik subscriptions increased from 7,711 at year-end 1999 to 8,208 at year-end 2000. The vast majority of these were free member subscriptions.

The Vestnik incurred postage expenses of $70,000 in 2000, which represented a 22 percent decrease from $90,015.50 in 1999. This was the Vestnik's lowest annual mailing cost since 1994. This decrease can be largely attributed to two factors: (1) Fewer subscriptions being mailed during the early part of 2000 and (2) Excess postage funds charged to the 1999 budget but applied early in year 2000.

The combined cost of Vestnik

printing and Vestnik postage in 2000 was $128,775.53, compared to combined costs of $148,791.03 in 1999.

The Vestnik's combined printing and postage expenses represented eight tenths of one percent (0.8 percent) of Total Society Disbursements of $18,452,613 in 2000.

Related Efforts In addition to publishing the Vestnik, the office of Editor and Director of Communication assisted local lodge officers and Home Office management, providing communications support on a range of printed and promotinal efforts. These projects were were assigned into two categories: (1) Print materials; and (2) Community relations. Print jobs varied greatly, ranging from publishing the 2001 SPJST Calendar and display advertisements to assisting local lodges with their promotional literature needs. Community relations included initiatives such as coordinating the Czech Youth Symphony performance at Temple College and promoting the SPJST at public events and SPJST events throughout Texas. These visits and one-on-one sessions provided the basis for many of the editorials and articles which appeared in the Vestnik.

Even with the efforts that are being made in the communications area, there's always room for improvement. The SPJST's Mission 2100 membership drive, implemented this year, is a progressive and proactive action aimed at spreading the good word of membership in the SPJST. In that regard, we've been working closely with the SPJST Insurance Department to present the details and updates on this program and will do whatever we can to contribute to the success of this program.

Internet Website As a result of actions of the 2000 SPJST Convention actions, the Editor and Director of Communications is now responsible for managing the SPJST's Internet website. I'll be !west: No installation of new technology is all fun and games. It has been and continues to be a learning process! While the website — www.spjst.com — is in place and has been periodically updated, it is a "first-generation" effort.

The next phase in this process will be a critical examination of the website to determine its pros and cons — what works and what doesn't.

SPJST Board of Directors' Annual Report for 2000 Pursuant to Article 43k of the Supreme Lodge By Laws, the Board of Directors fraternally submit to the membership their annual report for the financial stability of our SPJST Society for 2000.

Decrease in assets amounted to approximately two million dollars, due to pay off of the Defined Benefit Plan plus the decrease in annuity sales and redemption in annuities. Neither of these items have very little effect on the bottom line.

Our expenses increased slightly. We are aware of this increase and will monitor accordingly.

The Society, through its sales representatives, wrote $46,929,880.00 in insurance for the year 2000 excluding annuities with 1,263 applications written. The Insurance Department introduced new products in 2000 for our members. Our sales force should be complimented for their work. In 2000, our Society trained 46 new sales representatives. We are training additional sales representatives for their FTC certificates.

In spite of the many changes that have occurred in our economy the past year, we continue to report that we have maintained stable growth in various activities which include the Youth Department.

This is the eighth year of the Lodge

Incentive Program, which has been very successful and we urge every lodge to participate.

We, the directors, as promised have been working with the dormant lodges.

Some of them have become active lodges. We have merged several lodges and some of the lodges have converted to monthly meetings. We thank you all for cooperating with us.

We would like to thank the Supreme Lodge Officers, office staff and the field people for all their help in this endeavor.

This year, we will be working with all of the lodges on the Mission 2100 Program and we are asking all lodges, officers and members, office staff and the entire membership including everyone to help us in this great effort as our goal is to write 2100 applications in the year 2001.

We are asking you to please help your lodge to make their goal in the very important effort for the year of 2001.

In 2000, we had 15 lodges that were in process and we are working with them to become chartered lodges in 2001.

We, the undersigned directors, examined all bonds and coupons which are kept in a safety deposit box at the Bank of America, Temple, Texas on January 10, 2001. We reconciled the income and expense in the books of the Supreme Lodge. We also examined the mortgage loans and certificate loans. The following is our financial report.

Getting other parts of the organization involved, checking out the details and making sure all of the key players are on board with the project and going in the same direction -will be an essential part of this process throughout 2001. Without question, the Internet website requires the ideas, expertise and support of the whole operation to be all that it can be.

Already, I know, one of the areas we will be looking at with our Insurance Department are online tools that will enhance our present delivery network: Ways that will make it easier to locate and get in touch with local lodge sales representatives and online simulation tools that will provide members and prospective members with information that can assist them in purchasing life insurance.

One final thought as it relates to the SPJST website: Let's hear from you! One of the best ways to track our website's progress is to get those people who are using the technology to give feedback on the effectiveness of the processes we have put in place.

Internet Website As previously stated in the March 14, Vestnik, the Publication Committee met at the SPJST Home Office on March 3 to review year 2000 communication operations and to make recommendations for the coming year. The following recommendations were made by the Publication Committee: 1. To provide continued support —

both in-house and through the Vestnik — in promoting the goals and objectives of the SPJST's Mission 2100 Membership Campaign; 2. To incorporate the new SPJST logo on the cover of the Vestnik; 3. To promote, refine and update the SPJST's Internet web site; 4. To update the Czech lesson section of the Vestnik with new lesson plans, supplemented by audio tapes.

5. To feature, on a regular basis, in the Vestnik, articles and information which underscore the importance of good nutrition and exercise to a healthy lifestyle.

To work to bring new life and vitality to the Vestnik by including humorous and conversational items, under the "Insights and Outsights" banner in the Vestnik.

The Supreme Lodge members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of the deceased members. Chairman Bayer welcomed Editor Vanicek to the meeting.

MINUTES - The minutes were reviewed page by page. On page 335, Lodge 205 is scheduled for chartering on March 24, 2001. Director Broz moved, seconded

by Director Victorick to approve the minutes with corrections.

WORKSHOP - There was a discussion concerning the recent Local Lodge Officers Workshop and Awards Banquet. Ten lodges that did not receive incentive awards were represented at the banquet. Chairman Bayer appointed the President, Vice President, and Director of each district to form a committee (7 committees) to make a report to the Supreme Lodge on lodges not holding meetings, not submitting reports, and have no officers. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Broz to accept the committees and for a preliminary report to be made during the July Supreme Lodge meeting.

CHARITABLE BARBECUE - President Leshikar reported on April 25, 2001 the SPJST would have a barbecue lunch with proceeds going to the Cultural Activities Center in Temple.

AD VALOREM TAXES - President Leshikar reported on HB1689 and SB 1554, which would eliminate the ad valorem taxes on lodge halls. The local lodge would have to make applications to the taxing authority be granted the exempti on under these bills.

Chairman Bayer welcomed Honorary Vice President Mikeska to the meeting.

Employee Dorothy Stuchly was welcomed to the meeting and recognized for her 35 years of service to the SPJST. SPJST HISTORY - The SPJST History was reviewed and the suggestion was made to include the following: when new lodges were chartered, when lodges were merged, the 100th Anniversary, the name change, and the new logo.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - The Supreme Lodge went into executive session to discuss a personnel matter. Vice President McBride moved seconded by President Leshikar for the salary of State Fraternal Activities Coordinator to be $27,000.00 plus incentives previously set by the Supreme Lodge. Motion passed unanimously.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky to accept Gladys Yates as the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator at the recommended salary with the primary duty being 1/3 of the time spent in the field. Motion passed unanimously.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - State Youth Director Zavodny was welcomed to the meeting. The State Youth Director's report was reviewed. State Youth Achievement Day and Royalty will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2001, with registration beginning at 10:00 a.m. Appreciation was expressed to State Youth Director Zavodny for her presentation of the Mission 2100 program.

Recess was taken for the Board to reconvene in the Museum area.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES & MUSUEM - A letter was presented from the SPJST LAM Committee requesting a 20 X 20 space for the Svatava Jakobson collection. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Broz to make the space available with the SPJST LAM Committee covering the expenses to finish the room and to create an opening into the room. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a discussion as to what area might be available for storage for camp and Youth Achievement Day supplies. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by

There was a discussion on the genealogy computer, which was purchased in March 1999. There has been no genealogy software installed on the computer.

By common consent, President Leshikar is to research what genealogy software would be best installed on this computer.

The meeting was recessed at 1:05 p.m. and reconvened in the Board Room at 1:10 p.m.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS CARD - President Leshikar presented a community partner card with Albertson's, where a percentage of sales to our members would go towards the scholarship fund. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir for Presiderit'Leshikar to present further information during the July meeting and where Albertson's has locations. Motion passed unanimously.

SALES - Vice President McBride compared the sales for the first quarter of 2000 to the first quarter of 2001. In 2001 the insurance written is down 6.57% and the earned premiums were up by 2.86%. There were 175 applications written in March. Vice President McBride responded to a question that members are given the opportunity to join the lodge of their choice.

NEW LODGES - Vice President McBride reported Lodge 205-Terrell has been chartered. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt to add Lodge 225- Silsbee to the lodges in process. Motion passed unanimously.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir to reconsider the motion where we referendum officers and directors before assigning new lodges a number. Motion passed unanimously. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir to authorize the Vice President to begin the organization of a new lodge after consulting with the director and reporting on the lodge at the next meeting. Motion passed unanimously. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky to extend the time on chartering new lodges until the next meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

COMMISSION - Vice President McBride presented a letter from Actuary John Agee concerning the current commission scale. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by. Director Victorick to increase the first year commission by 5% effective May 1, 2001, if the probability study shows approval on all products.

Motion passed unanimously.

E & 0 COVERAGE - Vice President McBride presented bids for E & 0 coverage. By common consent it was decided to defer a decision until the July meeting.

REINSURANCE - Vice President McBride presented information from Actuary John Agee on the amount of retention SPJST should keep. After a lengthy discussion it was agreed to defer action until the new business section.

INSURANCE PRODUCTS - Vice President McBride reported rate cards and brochures have been distributed on the new Elite 30 product. There have been 110 Youth Achiever certificates issued since January f, 2001.

SALES REPRESENATIVES - There was a discussion on incentives for the recruitment of sales representatives. Vice President McBride moved, seconded

by President Leshikar for all persons who recruit sales representative be given $250.00 for recommending a non-licensed agent and $400.00 for recommending a licensed agent. The incentive would be paid after the new sales representative has written six applications within a twelve-month period and the incentive would be paid to any sales representative, Home Office employee, Director, or Officer. Motion passed unanimously.

MISSION 2100 - Vice President McBride reported on 686 leads the first quarter with 117 certificates being issued.

Vice President McBride presented ideas for new brochures. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by President Leshikar to get bids for 20,000 brochures of the smaller size so they would fit in a regular envelope. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a discussion about jackets for the Board members, State Youth Director, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Editor, and Field Representatives. Vice President McBride moved to purchase jackets in different colors with the new logo. Motion seconded by Director Broz. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Krizan. Motion passed.

EDITOR - Editor Vanicek presented his report including the good response for the Nolan Ryan Health brochure. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom to provide stationery to the lodges at 5 cents a sheet for any mailing after the local lodge's first free mailing. Motion passed unanimously.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer. Anglin reported on seventeen lodges that had not submitted their local lodge roster for 2001. Lodge 14Wesley, Lodge 188- Centerville, Lodge 5-Tioga, Lodge 35-Elk, Lodge 82-Ennis, Lodge 154-Fort Worth, Lodge 167-Penelope, Lodge 204-Stephenville, Lodge 157-Lubbock, Lodge 215-south Plains, Lodge 149-Alvin, Lodge 191-Lufkin, Lodge 114-Fairchild, Lodge 156-Baytown, Lodge 162-Iowa Colony, Lodge 41Port Lavaca, and Lodge 137-Taft.

ANNUAL STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on completing the annual statement and the letter to members concerning the name change.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by President Leshikar to list names of members with no known address in the Vestnik. Motion passed unanimously.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the independent audit has to be completed by June 1, 2001 and delivered to the Texas Department of Insurance by June 30, 2001. The cost will be about $12,000.00, LODGE INCENTIVE - The lodge incentive guidelines will follow the same guidelines as in the year 2000. They include: 1. Annuity certificates will count under certain exception rules.

2. Only target premiums count towards premiums on Universal Life.

3. Certificates must be issued by noon on December 28, 2001.

LOANS - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on loans in process, threatened foreclosures, foreclosures in process and bankruptcies. He also reported on the final lease agreement with the City of Temple.

PRIVACY OFFICER - Legal Advisor Kacir explained that someone will need to be appointed as the privacy officer or committee would need to be given this responsibility in the July meeting.

DISTRICT I - Director Victorick reported on making Mission 2100 presentations at Lodge 13-Dime Box, Lodge 141-Sealy, Lodge 186-Caldwell, Lodge 9Snook, Lodge 201-Bleiblerville-Nelsonville, Lodge 38-Smithville, and Lodge 17-New Tabor. He thinks Mission 2100 is very positive and the lodges appreciate the officers attending local lodge meetings.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky reported on attending meetings at Lodge 18-Elgin, Lodge 47-Seaton, Lodge 24-Cyclone, the State Tarok tournament and the awards banquet. He made Mission 2100 presentations at Lodge 74-Lovelady, Lodge 29-Taylor, Lodge 48-Beyersville, and Lodge 182-Marlin. He thinks this was one of the better awards banquet.

A member came before the Board to discuss a mortgage loan application.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan thanked President Leshikar for providing the new charter for Lodge 35-Elk and for making the keynote address at Lodge 35Elk's 100th Anniversary celebration. Director Krizan also thanked Legal Advisor Kacir for his extra effort and work on the property lease with the City of Temple and the new Library, Archives and Museum 501(c) 3 corporation. Director Krizan again expressed and recommended incentives for lodges going above their quota and achieving 150%. We need to keep these lodges working and reward them for their extra effort, he stated.

There was a discussion on the property adjoining part of the Home Office property. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt that if the SPJST Library, Archives, and Museum doesn't exercise the option for the property for a future location, then SPJST would take the option. Motion passed unanimously.

Director Krizan again expressed the need to reconsider offering interim financing for new home loans for our members and to increase our investment in equities to take advantage of a greater return in investments for our members and to balance our investment portfolio and reduce the risk/loss ratio.

Director Krizan also expressed the need to work the quotas issued to each lodge to sales representatives for Mission 2100, to offer the guaranteed issue program as soon as possible and for the President and Vice President to present a plan of action to the Supreme Lodge on all non-active lodges.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz reported he had attended the lodges in his district two or three times. He reported on the difficulties a lodge was having with one outside rental and asked for help in seeking a solution. He expressed his appreciation to State Field Representative Billy Rollwitz for the tremendous job he is doing. Director Broz thanked Vice President McBride for attending the District IV Sales Representative Banquet.

DISTRICT V - Director Pflughaupt commended State Field Representative Lynn Johnsen for the fine job she is doing and also for the refresher insurance courses she is conducting. He reported on making seven Mission 2100 presentations. He attended meetings at Lodge 88-Houston, installed officers at Lodge 196-Houston-West, and attended the Houston FIC meeting. He presented the Convention Grant to the Czech Cultural Center and the 1st Step Award to Lodge 139-Danbury. He thanked State Youth Director Zavodny for making a presenta-

DISTRICT VI - Director Ahlstrom reported on making Mission 2100 presentations a,t Lodge 4-Halletsville, Lodge 28-East Bernard, Lodge 32-Victoria, Lodge 97-Placedo, Lodge 148-Blessing, and Lodge 63-Sweet Home. He attended a meeting at Lodge 151-Wharton the youth committee meeting, the District VI meeting, and made an age 96 presentation.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer presented Mission 2100 programs at Lodges 107-Floresville, Lodge 185-New Braunfels, Lodge 133-San Antonio, Lodge 26Skidmore, and Lodge 79-Corpus Christi. He attended the youth committee meeting, the State Field representatives meeting, and the Workshop/award banquet.

He presented 50 year pins at Lodge 202-Jourdanton, attended the chartering of Lodge 205-Terrell, and attended a meeting of District VII officers.

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD - Chairman Bayer led a discussion about article 45(i) concerning extra funding for the youth. By common consent it was decided to discuss further funding of the youth department at the July meeting.

There was a discussion about the number of youth acts attending the TFC. It was agreed there would be one group act and two individual acts and the King and Queen authorized to attend the TFC. There was discussion on lodges that place restrictions on sales representatives and prospective sales representatives. Vice President McBride responded to a question that if an application is rated, the applicant is offered a smaller certificate or an annuity.

The officers and Director Pflughaupt and Chairman Bayer were appointed to a committee to develop an hour workshop presentation. This is to be completed by the October meeting.

100% FAMILIES - President Leshikar reported the 100% Family Program is still in effect. The certificate is mailed when a family or sales representative or lodge requests it.

Vice President McBride presented information on automatic issue coverage on members that have insurance in the amount of $5,000.00 or less with SPJST. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin to offer members automatic issue of $2,000.00 to $5,000.00 if the member is age 16 to 80 and has $5,000.00 or less insurance coverage with SPJST. This would only be available for 120 days. Motion passed unanimously.

SEMINAR - Vice President McBride is to continue to look for seminars for employees.

For the past years, SPJST has paid a $500.00 bonus in addition to the regular bonus to the sales representative that sells over one million dollars. This was not paid this year. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Krizan to pay Martha Broz, Albin Machu, and Evelyn Mikeska $500.00 bonuses for writing $1 million in insurance for the most consecutive years. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Bayer. Abstaining was Director Broz. Motion passed.

ADVERTISING - Vice President McBride reported he will be advertising our products statewide and also advertising for more sales representatives. More information about tabletop advertising displays will be presented at the next meeting. Vice President McBride expressed thanks to the officers and directors for their promoting the Mission 2100 program.

MORTGAGE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to approve the recommendations on the fifteen delinquent mortgage loans and to set a loss reserve of $6,000.00 for the mortgage loans. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a lengthy discussion concerning the convention action to allow mortgage loans up to $250,000.00 provided all other qualifications are met. By common consent, it was agreed further action was unnecessary and that Article 104 should follow.

TRAVEL GROUP - President Leshikar presented information on a SPJST Travel Group. SPJST would contact a travel agent that would select the trip and then advertise the trip. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt to proceed with the travel group. Motion passed unanimously.

President Leshikar reported on the Privacy Act. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Victorick to give the officers authority to inform the members about the SPJST Privacy Policy. Motion passed unanimously.

FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES - President Leshikar reported approximately sixty scholarships will be awarded this year. There have been 34 cemetery markers sold since they were first offered.

RE-INSURANCE - Vice President McBride presented information from Actuary John Agee on the amount SPJST can retain on each certificate. There were several options available. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom to table this item until the July meeting with figures being available two weeks in advance. Motion passed unanimously.

FURNITURE - Vice President McBride presented the costs for the cubicles, which had been purchased. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented information on a new receptionist area. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Vice-President McBride to authorize $3,055.00 for a new receptionist area and $699.00 expense override on the cubicles. Legal Advisor Kacir moved seconded by Director Krizan to table the motion. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, and Director Bayer. Voting against were Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, and Director Ahlstrom.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Krizan to approve the cost overrun and the purchase of an additional window. Motion passed unanimously.

It was requested for information about the receptionist area be available in the July meeting.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Victorick to ratify the investments from January 1, 2001, to March 31, 2001.

There was a lengthy discussion about the SPJST's investments and how the market is effecting these investments. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on one bond, Armstrong World that is now in default.

INTEREST SENSITVE PRODUCTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Krizan for the interest rate on Universal Life to be 7.25% from April 1, 2001 through July 31, 2001. Motion passed unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt for the interest rate on annuities be as follows: Annuity I - 5.5%; Annuity II - 6.5%; Roth IRA - 6.5%; and Immediate Annuity 6.5%. These rates are in effect from April 1, 2001 to July 31, 2001. Motion passed unanimously.

BENEVOLENCE PROGRAM - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented a program that would send a seedling to beneficiaries of our members after the death claim .had been paid. A lengthy discussion followed. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt for President Leshikar and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin to develop a program that we do ourselves and present it at the July meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

MAIL POLL - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President McBride to ratify the mail poll assigning Lodge 217 to Alice, Texas. Motion passed unanimously.

Recess was taken from 5:00 p.m. till 8:25 a.m.

INCOME AND EXPENSES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported income was up 14% this year and expenses were down by 14%. In comparing the amount budgeted by the actual income and expenses, the income is 25% of the budgeted and the amount of expenses is 24% of the budgeted amount.

Financial Secretary Mikulas discussed the 2000 Annual Statement line by line.

This report was filed with the Texas Department of Insurance on February 25, 2001.

PRODUCTS - Vice President McBride presented information on offering long

term care products through Banker's United to those agents with a Group I license (not grandfathered). Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Broz to go into a contract with Banker's United that would authorize Banker's United to enter into a contract with our sales representatives and under this contract the sales representative must sell six certificates per year. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom and Director Bayer. Voting against was Director Krizan. Motion passed.

LODGE INCENTIVE - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported one lodge had met membership requirements for the silver award, two for bronze award, four for honorable mention, and twelve for the 1st Step Award.

COMPUTER - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported two of the printers for the computers need to be replaced. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Vice President McBride to purchase two IBM 6400-010 printers. Motion passed unanimously.

Direct deposit of agents' checks should be available by the July meeting.

Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt for Vice President McBride to do a feasibility study about SPJST offering into long term care as its own product. Motion passed unanimously.

By common consent it was decided the officers should come up with a formula for awards honoring employees for their years of service. The officers are also to

HOME OFFICE BUILDING - There was a discussion concerning the room the SPJST Museum has requested. Director Victorick moved, seconded by Director Ahistrom for the officers to have the authority to provide a doorway from the museum into the new room. Motion passed unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved seconded by President Leshikar to destroy paper prior to 1990 at the officer's discretion. No paper or correspondence that has historical significance will be destroyed. Motion passed unanimously.

Legal Advisor Kacir thanked Vice President McBride for reporting of leads on referrals and for working towards getting beneficiary designations updated.

DISTRICT I - Director Victorick expressed his opinion the meeting had been very productive and lots had been accomplished. He invited everyone to the district meeting on April 22; Lodge 38-Smithville's Annual Picnic on April 29; and on July 1, to Lodge 9-Snook's July 4th celebration.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky expressed the need for all the members to help us achieve the 2100 goal. He enjoyed the meeting.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan congratulated the new directors on coming aboard in January. He expressed the need for the Society to stay competitive and the best way to do this is continue to be innovative in offering new and competitive products and to be willing to listen to the needs of our members. He invited everyone to the District III meeting at Lodge 6-Cottonwood; the 35th Annual National Polka Festival hosted by lodge 25 and Lodge 135- Ennis during Memorial Day weekend May 25 through May 27 and Lodge 6-Cottonwood's Annual Picnic on July 15th.

Director Krizan recommended possibly investigating hiring an additional actuary and to again list the memorial scholarship recipients in the Vestnik.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz invited everyone to District IV's meeting on April 22, 2001. He reported on SPJST donating $1,000.00 to Walls Volunteer Fire Department to be used towards the purchase of a Jaws of Life.

There was a discussion about farm loans. Legal Advisor Kacir moved seconded

Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Pflughaupt, and Director Ahistrom. Voting against were Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Broz, and Director Bayer. Motion passed.

President Leshikar moved seconded by Director Klinkovsky for mortgage loans over 160 acres, and the owner doesn't live on the property, to be at the commercial rate of interest and for a maximum term of 20 years. This is to apply to District IV only. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT V - Director Pflughaupt expressed his appreciation for everyone accepting the new directors. He would like to see refresher training on products; an organizational chart at the July meeting showing primary and secondary duties, letters written to the local lodges with copies to youth leaders, emphasizing youth incentives and duties; and adopting the eye glass recycling project as a state wide project.

DISTRICT VI - Director Ahistrom thought it had been a pleasure working with everyone. He presented graphs and charts showing the increase and loss of population over the past ten years in each county where SPJST has a local lodge.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer invited everyone to the District VII meeting on May 20, 2001.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. on July 17, 18, and 19, 2001.

President Leshikar reported on the need for a part-time staff person to help State Youth Director Zavodny. Director Krizan responded that the Society has adequate staff at this time and saw no need to hire additional personnel. He recommended that the part-time hours required to help State Youth Director Zavodny could be obtained by proper utilization of existing staff. There was a discussion on employees needing to help in other departments if the department needs help.

Our meeting was called to order by President L E. David at approximately 5:30 p.m. on April 29, 2001. The treasurer's report was given by Elise Koerner and was accepted as read.

Discussion was called for by President David as to what was needed to get back to active status. What to do? A dilemma and no one seemed to know what to say. Dean Carender suggested that the current officers be retained for the rest of the year. All agreed. After that everyone began to relax, breathe a sigh of relief, then started to enjoy themselves.

Fund Raising Ideas Discussed Fund raising ideas were discussed.

A hamburger cook out and a golf tournament was discussed. There will be more on these ideas at a later date.

New Meeting Time It was decided that our new meeting time would be on the first Monday of each month. The first meeting will be at Clark's Bar-B-Que in Tioga from 12 to 1 p.m. Everyone is to pay for their own meal. The meeting is open to anyone who wants to attend.

We want to thank Vice President, Gene McBride and SPJST, for a door prize. We had four drawings—three for $10 and one for $20. This created a lot of enthusiasm. We also want to thank L. E. David for the use of his dog house—and wow, what a dog house—for today's meeting. Kidding aside, President and Joella David have a beautiful club house behind their home. We just joshed him about his doghouse.

The meal of the day was home cooked chopped barbecue sandwiches with all the trimmings and side dishes and desserts were furnished by the members of the lodge. They were gracious hosts and we do appreciate it.

There were 18 members present and one guest. Winners for the door prizes were Bessie Dolezalek, Alice David, Laura Dolezalek and lucky, lucky, lucky Marcella Koerner.

The next meeting, as mentioned before, will be at Clark's Bar-B-Que in Tioga on May 7 from 12 to 1 p.m.

Anyone interested in participating in the golf tournament can contact anyone of the officers or members. Phone numbers and or addresses will be appearing in later reports.

Hi! Mothers entering Lodge 6, Cottonwood, for its meeting on Sunday, May 6, were pinned with a beautiful carnation corsage. These were compliments of our Youth Club for our Mother's Day meeting. Thanks a bunch. I am still enjoying mine.

Brother Johnnie Krizan, President, brought our meeting to order with our little Miss Bracy Craig and the youth club leading us in our Pledge of Allegiance. Tracy Dobecka recited our SPJST motto. It was reported by our Flag Bearer, Sister Georgie Soukup, that we had 28 members present at our meeting.

Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Secretary, read the minutes from our last meeting, which were approved as read. She also had some correspondence. The treasurer's report was given by Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, which was approved as given.

Well on the Way! Brother Jerry Kucera, State Sales Representative for District Three, gave us a report as of April 30 of having 24 applications in with only 36 more to go for a quota of 60 applications for the year. Brother Jerry went on to mention that overall, there were 175 applications per month needed for the seven districts. He encouraged all to turn in names of possible prospects to your sales representatives. Any of them would be happy to help out, with meeting the prospects insurance needs. He mentioned that he has brought items from the Home Office for door prizes at the end of our meeting. Thanks a bunch, Brother Jerry Kucera, District Three State Field Representative.

Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, gave his report of four new applications for March and 14 for April, being 12 adults and seven juveniles. All were approved and welcomed into our lodge. Thanks to our Sales Representatives, Sister Ruth Krizan and Brothers Johnnie Krizan, Robert Dobecka and Jerry Kucera.

Brother George also reported the bookings for June, including a trustee's meeting on June 1 at 7:30 p.m. with our meeting for Sunday, June 3 at 5 p.m.

(Note this time.) It was also reported that our socials would be on June 1 and June 15 for this month.

Our Youth Leader, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report. She reported taking cakes to West Rest Haven on May 2. She also reported that everyone enjoyed the Easter egg hunt last month. Sister Peggy and her youth crew have been selling Valentine bears

Wednesday, May 23, 2001—ViSTNIK/9 as one of their projects for which they were able to send $189 to the March of Dimes. It was also reported that the youth elected new officers.

Sister Hattie Kaska, Sunshine Committee, gave her report of sending get well cards to Beverly Williams and Tye Williams. We all hope both of you are up and about going strong by now. Sister Hattie also reported sending sympathy cards to the Jessie Cleghorn Family; Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Muehistein upon the death of his brother, Frankie; Robert and Irene Schiemenz upon the death of her father, John Tobola; and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Pavelka upon the death of his mother, Albina Pavelka. Our deepest sympathy to all of these families upon their loss.

Brother Johnnie Krizan offered congratulations to all for a job well done in hosting the District Three Spring Meeting last month. He thanked Brother Ray Perez, First Vice President, for taking his place in doing the welcome, since Brother Ray's son, Brother Damon Perez, First Vice President of District Three, gave the response. He mentioned they did a good job.

The progressive door prizes were drawn with Brother Raymond Marek winning the $10 door prize and Sister Patricia Ann Landeros being drawn for the $3 door prize (not present). The $5 door prize was won by Sister Annie Chudej. The items from the Home Office that Brother Jerry Kucera brought down were won by the following: Sister Christine Matus won a wall clock; Sister Irene Peterson won the umbrella; Sister Georgie Skerik won the rain gauge and Sister Peggy Dobecka won the cap. Congratulations to these winners. Various other door prizes were exchanged.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, June 3, at 5 p.m. with Brother Milton and Sister Irene Peterson preparing the meal for this meeting.

The Board of Trustee's meeting will be held on Friday evening, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. which is also social night at 6:30 p.m.

Yo! Yo! Ladies are meeting Wednesday, the 16th of May starting at 10 a.m. I wish I would be there, but I can't.

Helen Hegwood, Corine Kessler and Bess Witovec did a good job cooking a meal in May—it was baked chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, red beans and garlic bread. It was good. I failed to mention the cooks for March. They were Margie Anders, Alice Bily and Evelyn Gutkowski. They did a wonderful job.

Ladies of the Birthday ChM, don't forget to bring pastry for the homecoming day, June 3.

We will not have cooks for June, July and August. It is a covered dish for three months.

Cake bakers for June are Mary Kosut, Edna Froelich, Julie Kinnamon, Almeida Bravenec, Lydia Marsh and Evelyn Zajicek. Willie Mae Ermis, Edna Froelich will help in the kitchen in June.

We had a wonderful time in Kemah on May 2. We left from Lodge 88 at 10 a.m. and were back at 4 p.m.

We did a lot of walking. We rode the train while some rode the ferris wheel and merry-go-round. Then we ate at different restaurants. The ladies who went were Helen Hegwood, Ellen Miculka, Evelyn Zajicek, Bessie Deuer, Dora Clooney, Julie Kinnamon, Alice Bily, Willie Mae Ermis, Lydia Marsh, Margaret Spahr, Edna Froelich, Josephine Buri, Corine .Kessler, Margaret Bohac, Pauline Traylor, Bess Witovec, Edna Wehring and Josephine Bishop. Some of the husbands went.

Lillie Spies' nephew was on Wheel of Fortune the first week of May. He won big. He was happy.

Amber Martinez, my great-granddaughter, made reporter of the Kingwood High School newspaper, The Kingwood Courier. Keep it up, Amber.

Sunday, May 13 is Mother's Day. I wish every mother a happy day.

Lodge 107, Floresville reports on May meeting Lodge 107 held its monthly meeting on May 6, 2001 at 3 p.m. President Pruski called the meeting to order.

Roll call of officers found all present. There was no one on the Sick Call.

The minutes of the March 18 and April 8, 2001 meetings were read and approved. There was no correspondence.

Financial Secretary report showed four new members for March and two cancellations; one new member for April and two cancellations.

Treasurer report was read and accepted.

New Business The District Seven Spring Meeting is on May 20, 2001.

Hall Manager Report—we had one rental for last weekend (a Stag Party).

The hall is being painted on the outside. Once the roof has been sealed, we will replace the water damaged ceiling tiles.

Youth Leader Report—Youth Leader Pruski reported there were 11 members, one guest, and two adults present at the youth meeting. A thank you card was received from the. Ronald McDonald House for the pull-tabs the youth have been collecting and sending in. The youth plan a lodge outing to Splashtown possibly in July or August.

District Seven Youth Achievement Day will be on July 15, 2001 at Sacred Heart, registration begins at 12:30 a.m.

District Seven Camp is July 28 - 30, 2001 at Echo Hill Ranch. State Youth Achievement Day and State Royalty is Saturday, August 4, 2001 in Temple.

The next meeting will be May 31, 2001 at 7 p.m.

Lodge 139, Danbury reports on May meeting Danbury Lodge 139 met at E.J.'s Restaurant on May 2. President Lonnie Lostak introduced visitors to the meeting. District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt and his wife, Dorothy Pflughaupt, of the By-Laws Committee, and District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton. Director Pflughaupt gave information about a new insurance policy and gave out door prizes. He reported the formation of a new District Five lodge in Silsbee.

During the business part of the meeting, it was announced there were no applicants for the Lodge 139 Scholarships this year.

Lodge 186, Caldwell reports on May meeting SPJST Lodge 186, Caldwell, held its regular monthly meeting on May 8.

Members and quest were treated to a picnic-style meal of fried chicken, potato salad, sandwiches, chips, and dessert.

After the meal, President Clint Luksa called the meeting to order.

Secretary Liddy Supak led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and then called the roll of officers. Minutes and Treasurers reports were heard and approved. Vice-President Bennie Polasek reported on the recent District One Spring Meeting.

Old business consisted of repair of the flag pole. New business consisted of a request from Burleson St. Joseph Hospital to use the hall for a fund raiser. The fund raiser would allow for improvements on the hospital's emergency room. We voted to not only allow the hospital to use the hall. but

Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy reports on May meeting Our monthly meeting held on May second was well attended. The meeting was conducted by President Bob Miracle. The minutes and treasurer's reports presented by SecretaryTreasurer Linda Roming were approved.

There being no old business, President Miracle opened a discussion about the work of the lodge. The members of the lodge will be involved in the upcoming Bruceville-Eddy Mayfest to be held May 11 and 12. A $500 sponsorship donation was made to this community-wide celebration and fund raiser. Members of the lodge were invited to participate in the State Horseshoe Tournament.

Lodge Members Offer Assistance Since a number of our lodge members helped with the annual SPJST Home Office fund raiser, he gave us a brief report including information that 1865 barbecue plates were served and sold in a period of about two hours. The fund raiser was for the benefit of the Temple Cultural Activities Center. He thanked Alan Trigg for helping him cook the 119 briskets. Frances McBride mixed many tubs of coleslaw. Other lodge members Trish Mathis, Janna McNeil and Leonard Mikeska also helped with serving and/or preparation.

Although sales are great this year, our lodge still needs more new sales representatives. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 6 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Taylor Hall in Eddy.

The day God called our Emily home was on May 11, 2001. She passed on at Scott and White Hospital in Temple.

Services were held Monday at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple with the Reverend Walter Matus and Deacon Bill Smetana officiating. A rosary was recited Sunday at ScanioHarper Funeral Home.

She was born in Bell County to John and Annie Bartek Pavlica.

She married Edward Mikeska in 1935 and they purchased a farm in Joe Lee in 1939. On the Emily Mikeska farm, they raised a family of four.

Mr. and Mrs. Mikeska were adult leaders in the 4-H club. They were active in Future Farmers of America, Parent Teacher Association, Farm Bureau, SPJST, WFLA and Catholic Youth Organization.

Emily served as chairman of the Bell County Home Demonstration Council. In 1955, she was named the Outstanding Home Demonstration Club Woman of Bell County. She was club president of the Joe Lee Home Demonstration Club and served as the recreation chairman and as secretary.

As a 4-H adult leader, she worked with the Central Texas Fair. She was a PTA member of Rogers schools and a member of the Catholic Daughters at St. Luke's Church.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 47 in which she served as vice president, reporter, youth leader and Czech secretary. She served six years as a SPJST District Two Youth Leader. She was also a sales representative.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward Mikeska, in 1962.

In 1970, she married F.W. "Studie" Stuteville of Brownwood. The two of them had many adventures of travel.

During these travels, they made many friends and danced the waltz and polka across many dance floors. Emily and "Studie" had a zest for life and lived life to the fullest. Our dear "Studie" went to his resting place in 1999.

Emily was preceded in death by her son Gene Edward Mikeska in 1996.

She is survived by her son, Dean P. Mikeska and his wife, Flo Mikeska of Joe Lee; two daughters, Sandra Vrba and her husband, Don Vrba, Sr. of Richmond and Linda Mikeska of Houston; a brother, Johnny Pavlica of Victoria; two sisters, Ruby L. Bolton of Temple and Angeline Kristinek of Lubbock; four grandchildren, Don Vrba, Jr. and his wife, Shannon of Houston, Stephanie Mikeska of Austin, Becky Vrba of Houston and Steven Mikeska and his wife, Melissa of Joe Lee and two great-grandchildren, Justin Marshall of Joe Lee and Chandler Vrba of Houston.

Mrs. Vitovsky, 60, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.

She was born April 4, 1941 in Ennis, the daughter of Joe A. and Mary Lanicek Valek. She was reared in Ennis and was a 1959 graduate of St. John High School. On October 26, 1962, she was married to W.J. Vitovsky.

After their marriage, they lived in Ennis. In 1964, they moved to Dallas where she was employed in the accounting department of Continental Ins. Co. In 1974, they returned to Ennis. She retired in 1996 as a claim adjuster for CNA Ins. Co. of Dallas.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church, the SPJST and KJZT. She is survived by her husband, W.J. Vitovsky, of Ennis; two brothers, Joe E Valek, of Dallas, Wesley Valek and his wife, Evelyn of Crisco; three sisters, Elsie Mandak, of Mesquite, Barbara and her husband, Tommy Newman of Dallas

and Georgia Salik of Palm Springs, California; 29 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Mary Valek and three sisters, Sister Mary Victor (Agnes) Valek, Mary Wood and Lillian McElroy.

May she rest in eternal peace and her memory remain with us forever.

Expression of Sympathy The Resolution Committee of Lodge 84, Dallas wishes to express our deepest sympathy to the family of JOE OTTO TYDLASKA who passed away on March 4, 2001 at the age of 86. He was born in Rosebud, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II from 1942 to 1945. He retired from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) after 34 years of service.

He was a member of SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas for many years. He was preceded in death by Lillian Rose Tydlaska.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bessie Tydlaska; son and daughter-inlaw, Joe H. and Janet Tydlaska and so, Ronald James Tydlaska; four grandchildren, Joe Wessley Tydlaska, John Allen Tydlaska, Ronald James Tydlaska, Jr. and Michael J. Tydlaska; granddaughter, Juanita Tydlaska; stepchildren, Barbara and husband, Kim Jones and Lloyd Baker; and grandsons, Garrett Baker and Don Jarred.

On Wednesday, March 7, a Christian Mass was held at St. Monica Catholic Church in Dallas with Reverend Monsignor Jerome Duesman celebrating. Interment was at Laurel Land Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to St. Monica Catholic Church Building Fund or the U.T. Southwestern Alzheimer's Diagnostic Center.

John was a retired Staff Sergeant from the United States Army after 27 years of service. He was a weapon inspector with the Civil Service Commission.

He has been an active member of Lodge 84, Dallas since 1993, serving most of them as bar chairman. He was also a member of the VFW Lodge, American Legion Post 345, Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, NRA, American Gunsmithing Association,

AARP. He collected Matchbox cars and trains.

John is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda; son, John Jones, Jr.; and daughter, Janet Jean Jones.

Mr. McCollum, 76, died Friday, May 4, 2001 at his home in Ennis. He was born January 24, 1925 in Oak Grove, the son of Roy and Esther Lois Hurley McCollum. He was reared in Oak Grove and attended Central High School. On March 17, 1951, he was married to Dorothy Kyle. After their marriage, they lived in Ennis. He worked as a cattle rancher all of his life and continued to ranch until the time of his death. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Ennis; two daughters and their husbands, Sara and Wilson Erwin of Ennis and Patricia and Stephen McNutt of Dallas; brother, Reverend Randall McCollum of Ennis; a sister, Fay Terry of Lubbock; two grandsons, Kyle and Will Erwin; and several nieces and nephews.

In Memory of Gilbert Kautz Gilbert Gustav Kautz, 89, of Taylor, died Monday, March 19, 2001 at Trinity Lutheran Home in Round Rock.

A worship service celebrating his life was held on Thursday, March 22, 2001, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor. Burial followed at the Taylor City Cemetery.

The family received friends Wednesday evening, March 21 at Condra Funeral Home in Taylor.

Gilbert was born in 1912 and lived in Taylor on his farm with his wife and family most of his life.

Wednesday, May 23, 2001—VESTNIKJ15 He enjoyed taking care of his cattle and farmland and worked his land and tended his cattle up until recently, keeping family members and veterinarians alike skilled in hauling hay and delivering calves.

Music was one of his favorite pastimes and in 1941, he started the Gilbert Kautz Orchestra. Gilbert's orchestra has performed in central Texas and throughout the state for the past 60 years. Up until the past year, Gilbert played trumpet in the orchestra and was a great inspiration and friend to music lovers, musicians and ball room dancers across the region. The orchestra continues to perform under his name. His theme song, the classic tune, "Vilia", is the opening song for each performance.

Gilbert was devoted to his family and to his church and he was a steady servant of God. He joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Taylor in 1928 and has remained a member ever since. He frequently performed on trumpet for church festivals.

In June 1947, Gilbert married Aline Greinert and the couple celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary last year.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his sister, Rosalee Zieschang; brother, Roland Kautz; and granddaughter, Peyton Byfield.

Survivors include his wife, Aline Kautz of Taylor; daughter and grandchildren Glynda, Amber, Aubrey and Britton Byfield of Taylor; son and daughter-in-law, David and Patti Kautz of Round Rock, and their children, Jennifer Brugh and Derek Romans.

He is also survived by sisters, Evelyn Birklebach of-Georgetown and Leona Miertschin of San Antonio.

Family, friends and fans will remember Gilbert as a kind, gentle man who loved people and always enjoyed company. Gilbert was a blessing in the lives of everyone who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Music Fund, Taylor.

Arrangements were by Condra Funeral Home, Taylor.

Dear Readers, April has been another busy month for the New Tabor SPJST Youth Club.

At our April meeting we had three new members join. Welcome to Mitchell Orozco, Lauryn McManus and Nicole Crnkovic. We also welcomed Coy Cass who will be joining the 'youth club in June.

After our meeting, the youth club members made Easter decorations for Burleson St. Joseph Manor nursing home. We delivered the decorations, set them on the dining tables then presented an Easter program for the residents. After the program, youth members visited with the residents.

On Saturday, April 14, 2001, our youth gathered at the lodge hall and had an Easter egg hunt. We made bunny spoons and bunny necklaces waiting for the Easter bunny's arrival.

After all the candy and goodies were gathered, we all enjoyed pizza, cookies and brownies. , Thanks to Jessica and Jacob Hejl for bringing and organizing the craft activities and to Mitchell Orozco for bringing the cookies and brownies.

On Sunday, April 22, Lodge 17, New Tabor hosted the District One Spring Meeting. The youth presented a program entitled, "Ragged Old Flag".

The youth were dismissed after the program and went on a "nature hike" with assistant District Youth Counselor Holly Narro. After the hike, the youth had a scavenger hunt and all enjoyed hot dogs, chips and banana pudding.

She got the policy through one of our district's sales representatives, Tommy Drapela. She received a baby blanket for Blair from our State Field Representative, Karen Kaspar. My mom already had a SPJST teddy bear.

She says it is the beanie baby of SPJST. She wrapped up a box; wrapping the lid separately. She wrapped the teddy bear and the policy in the baby blanket. You could see the words, "This baby is covered by SPJST". Then she put it all in the box and tied it with a bow.

All Blair knew was that he got a teddy bear, but his parents, Jackie and Mike Watz, were very happy with the gift and the way my mom presented it to them.

I just thought you might enjoy this story. A few of the ladies in our local lodge thought it was a neat idea.

88, Houston Youth Club project assists needy

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Youth Club plans rummage sale. May 19 Hello, SPJST Brothers and Sisters, Lodge 92 Youth Club had its May meeting on May 13. We did many things for everyone that day. We wrapped presents for the ladies at the lodge and gave them Mother's Day gifts. Then we gave Mother's Day gifts to the ladies at our local nursing home in Lake Worth.

Other things important in our discussion are we are having our rummages sale May 19 at our lodge in Lake Worth. Come on down or donate anything you do not want. We will take anything. Sunday, May 20, the lodge will have a dance from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., be sure to attend at Lodge 92.

That is all for now. The June meeting will be held at 1 p.m. instead of 2 p.m.

The May meeting of Lodge 1 77 Academy Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Sara Wagner. Kyle Hattenback led the Pledge of Allegiance. We had seven members, one visitor and three adults present.

Old Business The following items were discussed: 1. Flag essay contest ends June 1.

2. Leader-in-Training (LIT) applications due May 15. The LIT workshop is June 1-3 at Greene Family Camp.

3. May 15 is the deadline to order camp tee-shirts.

4. A list of items for the Ronald McDonald House was distributed. All members are to bring their items to the

June meeting. We will take these to the Ronald McDonald house after the meeting.

New Business 1. Camp forms were passed out. These need to be turned in to youth leader by June 27.

2. Youth Achievement Day (YAD) cards are due to youth leader by June 20.

3. Tee-shirt certificates were awarded to youth participating.

4. The youth club's summer trip was discussed. We are tentatively going to Fiesta Texas, spending the night in a motel and then going to Schlitterbahn the next day. Dates and details to follow.

What Is It? Each year, the SPJST sponsors a Flag Day Essay Contest to promote patriotism and creative literacy.

Who Can Enter?

SPJST members ages six to high school senior.

The Rules • Write a poem or essay about the American flag. Essay length must be between 150 and 500 words.

• Entries must be typed.

• Entries must be original and created by the youth member.

• Entries become the property of SPJST and will not be returned.

• Entries must include a cover sheet with the following information: participant's name, address, phone number, and lodge number.

• Participants will receive a participation certificate. Youth club members will also receive 20 merit points in the Merit Point System.

• Entries must be received by June 1, 2001.

Judging Entries will be judged by a panel of writing specialists. Judging is based on the entry's creativity, grammar and neatness.

Seaton School preservation committee working to preserve old school building The old Seaton school was the last remaining rural school in Bell County when it closed in 1975 after 90 years of continuous operation. What started as little more than a shack next to Franklin Martinec's store in 1885 survived almost a century and turned out more than its fair share of successful students, who went on to become productive citizens.

The "new" school, built during 1912 and 1913, still stands on Highway 53, eight miles east of Temple, a little less for wear but functioning now as the Seaton Community Center.

A group of local citizens, many of them former students and teachers at the school, have taken it upon themselves to renovate and preserve the building. The Seaton School Preservation Committee plans to restore two of the four rooms of the existing school building to a classroom, including a library. The two remaining rooms will be used by the Community Center.

Elvira Schneider Poboril, chairwoman of the; preservation committee, attended the school from second through 10th grade, starting in 1927.

She still has fond memories of her school days, where she was a member of the basketball and volleyball teams.

"One tournament we won, we got a little gold basketball," she said. "I still have mine. I haven't talked to anyone else who has theirs, but I still have mine."

The committee is looking for similar artifacts and memorabilia, including pictures of past students, faculty and school activities.

The committee hopes to qualify the building for a historical marker. Such a designation will require special care to preserve the building as it appeared in the early part of the century.

"We need donations for repairs," Mrs. Poboril said. "To get the marker, we can't change anything, like the original wood, but it needs to be painted inside and out and some repairs need to be made. That's%going to take money."

In its original incarnation, the school was known as Fair view School 18 and was located at Hruskaville.

The first teacher was Mr. C.C. Cross.

Land for the present building was donated by Charles Motl with an additional donation from Charlie Simek.

The Seaton School District eventually came to include schools from Little Elm, Thompson, Komensky and Lost Prairie.
