Ready to Go Those who know Sister Gladys Yates will quickly tell you that she has played an important part in SPJST's District Three fraternal scene. A member of Lodge 66, Waco for more than twenty years, Gladys is currently District Three Assistant Youth a Counselor, member of the Entertainment Committee and Assistant Youth Leader at Lodge 66, Waco and an SPJST sales representative. She is past Fraternalist of the Year of her local lodge and has represented Lodge 66, Waco as a delegate to the last four SPJST State Conventions.

Moreover, she previously served as District Three President and First Vice President and for years has served as District Three's Summer Camp nurse. As of April 30 this year, Glady's story now has a sequel.

She's SPJST's new State Fraternal Activities Coordinator.

"I am so ready to get out there and do whatever I can to assist our local lodges," says Gladys. "An active fraternal program is so important to attracting new members and making the lodge experience an enjoyable one."

Prior to signing on with SPJST, Gladys logged 36 years in the medical field, serving in varied capacities, ranging from nurse to activity director Gladys Yates in an assisted living environment. That work experience along with her extensive SPJST background, emphasis on goal-setting and upbeat attitude should serve Gladys well in her new role as State FAC. In visiting with Gladys, you immediately pick up on her sincerity and optimism. I believe that what she does in the future for the SPJST could far surpass what she's done in the past. That's exciting, but even more uplifting is the thought of what this could mean for the development of SPJST's fraternal program.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar agrees, "We're glad to have her with us and know she will be a great asset in her new position."

In July, Gladys and her husband, James, will observe their 36th wedding anniversary. A 100 Percent SPJST Family, the Yates' have two sons and five grandchildren, including the reigning SPJST State Duke, Dakota Yates.

Actively Involved Congratulations to State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny who was recognized as the SPJST Home Office "Recruiter of the Month." In April, Sister Zavodny generated 15 sales leads for the Insurance Department to forward to local lodge sales representatives. For her initiative, Sister Zavodny earned the coveted "Recuriter of the Month" parking space and a $25 gift certificate to the Olive Garden Restaurant. Home Melanie Zavodny Office personnel generated a total of 59 sales leads in April.

Melanie has worked for the SPJST since 1994. In addition to her active role in coordinating and promoting the SPJST's youth program, Melanie and her husband, David, are active members of Lodge 24, Cyclone, where Melanie serves as reporter and David is chairman of the board of trustees.

2001 Graduates Last week's 2001 graduate tribute issue of the Vestnik generated a lot of positive response. It also generated several inquiries, namely, "Is it too late to send in graduate photos and write-ups?" The answer is no. If you still have a 2001 SPJST graduate - high school or collegiate - that you would like to see recognized in the Vestnik, please send us their photo and background information.

We will be printing all of these additional graduate profiles in approximately one month.

SPJST records 520 applications through April in Mission 2100 program Through the end of April 2001, the SPJST had received applications for 520 insurance certificates. Over the same period, a total of 446 insurance certificates were issued. The goal of the 2001 Mission 2100 membership drive is to write at least 2,100 applications in 2001.

In conjunction with the SPJST's Mission 2100 program„ local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year 2001. In most cases, the lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column,"Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with active youth clubs and reflects the number of applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals will be applied toward the lodge's total quota.

An asterisk (*) denotes that the lodge does not have a youth club. The sixth column "Lodge Incentive Count" reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incent ve Program through April 30, 2001.

SPJST records 580 referrals through April in Mission 2100 program The SPJST's Mission 2100 program is a year-long campaign, calculated to generate at least 2,100 applications for membership in the Society by year-end. "For Mission 2100 to succeed, we must involve all levels of the SPJST towards achieving this energetic goal," said SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride in an article which appeared in the January 10 Vestnik. "It's an ambitious goal but one which I am sure we can achieve."

To help achieve the objectives of the Mission 2100 program, several incentives are being offered.

Members who make referrals that result in written applications will be recognized as follows: • Recruit One Member - Name in Vestnik.

• Recruit Three Members - Name and photograph in Vestnik.

• Recruit Six Members - Name and photo in Vestnik, photo plaque for lodge.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 54, West actively meeting fraternal needs of the community President Wilburn Willis called the first quarterly meeting of 2001 to order on March 2. After he welcomed everyone in attendance, he led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We remained standing for a few moments of silence in memory of our members, Brother Joseph Holasek, a 75-year member and Sister Mary Jansky.

They both died on the same day, December 23, 2000. May they rest in eternal peace. Our sympathies to their loved ones.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Maxine Sefcik gave the following report: A cordial welcome is extended to the following transferees to Lodge 54—Shannon R. Kostecka, Cameron Wolf and Coleman Wolf, all youth members from Lodge 6, Cottonwood; adult members, Rachel D. Kostecka from Lodge 6, Cottonwood and Raymond H. and Rose Marie Parma from Lodge 66.

We are very happy to have these new additions to our lodge and look forward to having them participate in our lodge affairs.

Home Office Employees Lend a Hand When a fire devastated the home of the Anita Hill family, SPJST Home Office personnel pooled their efforts and collected canned goods, other non-perishable food items, household goods and cash to assist the local family. District Three for most applications written in November 2000. He was also recognized for being in the Consistency Club for November and December 2000. Congratulations to Freddie!

This year our lodge has three 50year members, namely Johnny E. Kasik, Jr., Donald Gibson and Pauline M. Lawson. We plan to honor these members on September 7, 2001.

Plans will be finalized and invitations will be sent at a later date.

An Active Lodge!

The following information was submitted by Lodge 54 to the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator for the year 2000: 19 fraternal lodge events, 206 fraternal acts; 1,499 fraternal hours; 69 community service events; 172 community acts; 1,321 community hours; $5,987.01 total costs to lodge for events, rent, electricity, food, reimbursements and salaries and donations to Shriners and Czech Folk Dancers.

The Kiwanis Club of West acknowledged its thanks through the local press to the following Lodge 54 members who participated in recent blood drives. They are Delayne Chudej, Freddie Kaluza, Frank Kucera, Jr., Milada Mazanec, Edwin Nors and Marcela Vaculik. Jan Vaculik, our Czech Reporter, deserves recognition. He has donated 62 pints of blood. Janice Kaluza and Stephanie Emery are regular donors to the Red Cross Blood Bank in Waco.

Congratulations to Brother Ray Kral for being honored in December for 40 years of employment with Jupe, formerly West Flour Mill.

Get well cards were sent to Jo Ann Matus, Mary Lou Mynar, Annie Hlavenka, Estelle Marek, Betty Pareya, Evelyn Reynolds and Irene Plsek. Sympathy cards were sent to the families of Joseph Holasek, Mary Jansky and Helen Foit Kudelka.

Thanks to FAC Maxine Sefcik for all of the detailed reporting of members' activities. We thank all of the members who participate in lodge affairs and make us such an active lodge.

Treasurer Mary Lou Mynar distributed copies of her report prior to reading it. The report was approved as read.

Audit committee members Mona Zahirniak and Yvonne Nors reported that they completed an audit on all records and found all to be in order.

Our next meeting will be held on June 8 at 7 p.m. Everyday Heroes will be honored at this meeting.

Sokol West will host the Southern District Sokol Slet at Lone Star Hall on June 1, 2 and 3.

President Willis adjourned the meeting and everyone enjoyed food and fellowship.

Tree Planting Members of Lodge 88, Houston's Men's Club recently purchased and planted three pecan trees at the lodge in memory of the club's departed members. Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Congratulations to Helen Morgan (Lodge 191, Lufkin) and Evelyn Mikeska (Lodge 196, Houston-West) on being winners in selling insurance in District Five.

There is an important day coming up in District Five, and that is Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, July 1 at Lodge 196, Houston-West lodge. I am sure District Youth Counselor Marie Stayton and our lodge Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales are busy lining up this very important day for the youth.

This is when the youth will show their projects and talents and when the district royalty will be chosen. Show your support for our leaders and our youth by being there. Congratulations go to Wendy Kay Holeman, daughter of Henry Holeman and the late Pat Holeman, on graduating from Lutheran High North School.

Just this once, I am going to write about a relative, my grandson, Brooks Krejci Eubank, who graduated from John Cooper High School in The Woodlands in 1998. He is graduating from Yale this month.

Our sympathy goes to Grace Schneider, wife of 57 years of Fred D. Schneider who died recently; he was a member of our Men's Club. Our sympathy is also extended to Edward Kenziora, husband of 52 years of Annie Kenziora, who died after a life of helping others.

"Get Well" greetings go to Bessie Lero, Nat Gonzales, Lillie Spies, Edna Froelich and any others who are ill.

Everyone was happy to hear Gladys Havemann had a quick recovery.

Reunions Marek Family Descendants of Ignac (Hynek) Marek, born 1814 and Terezie Hejl Marek will hold a family reunion on Saturday, June 2, 2001. The reunion will be held at Rudy Mikeska's Durango Room, 300 West Second Street, Taylor, Texas. Please note this is a new place for the reunion. There will be lots of free parking.

Registration starts at 12 noon and will cost $3 per family and $1.50 per person. Kolaches as well as other Czech bakery items and coffee will be served at 2 p.m. A catered barbecue supper will be served at 5 p.m. for $5.75 a plate. As in the past, please bring a dessert to share at supper. We will also have a silent auction so if possible, bring an item for the silent auction. A business meeting will be at 6 p.m.

Local Pastor George Harris, 61, has come a long way since his days as a wide-eyed altar boy at his Dallas parish.

After 35 years in the priesthood, Harris, presently vicar general of the diocese and Pastor of Our Lady Queen of the Universe in San Benito was bestowed the title of monsignor by Bishop Raymundo Pena at an installation ceremony Thursday at the San Juan Basilica.

Although he modestly downplayed the occasion, it was a special day for Harris who now holds the official title, Reverend Monsignor.

A day prior to the historic occasion, Harris entered the front room of the San Benito parish office carrying a long white box under his arms.

"This was sent earlier today from Chicago," he explained as he set the box on the counter and proceeded to open it.

The contents inside the package were untouched. In it were two articles of clothing, ceremonial garb, meticulously folded, pressed and safeguarded in plastic wrap.

Harris quickly unfolded the first piece which was a purple ceremonial robe to be worn during the installation mass. The second piece was a cream-colored vestment.

As Harris stood in full ceremonial dress, office workers began to gather around him, praising the articles' craftsmanship and splendor.

Later, while reflecting on a career that has spanned over three decades, Harris said he has been lucky in life and credited good examples in his first church for inspiring him to go into the priesthood.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1965, he has served parishes in Corpus Christi, Brownsville, Harlingen, Mission, Los Fresnos, Alamo, McAllen and Weslaco.

He has spent the past two years as pastor of Our Lady Queen of the Universe and has no plans of being reassigned or retiring any time soon.

"I see our membership here growing," he said, adding that he is impressed and a bit overwhelmed by the level of commitment of parish members.

"Where there is activity, there is life," he said.

Harris concluded by saying his new title will create more responsibilities but he also welcomes the challenge.

196, Houston-West meets this Sunday, May 20 Lodge

Lodge 196 will be having a meeting on May 20, 2001 at Mrs. Evelyn Mikeska's house. This meeting will be at 2 p.m. Please bring a covered dish. The dance that we held on April 28, 2001 was sucessful. We had a big turn out. We are planning to have them play again—maybe in August 2001. The band was called "Texas Drifters".

Christi Circle of Women reports on April meeting Corpus

Thirty members, honorary members — Jerry Elzner and Clement Kasparek, and guests, Dorothy Berner, Myles Marek, Phil Peterson and Bud Duplessis attended the May 3 meeting of the Corpus Christi Circle of Women. We each had a place mat from the Czech Republic and mine read "Proklate dobre kure" which means "Bite into Good Chicken". It was from a Czech Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). It seems strange seeing Czech printed on a KFC ad.

Thanks to Jerry Elzner for thinking of us while he visited there.

Of the group that traveled to the Czech Republic, Margaret Kolodziej was the most enthused since this was her first trip. Milly, Della and Jerry Elzner have seen the beauty of the country and experienced the hospitality of the people before so they knew what to expect. Margaret spoke of the wonderful experience.

An Award Winner!

One of the newer members of the Circle of Women, Margaret Kolodziej, was recently honored by being nominated to receive the Jefferson Volunteer Award. She was chosen as an honoree along with 38 other volunteers in the Coastal Bend. Margaret volunteers daily at St. Theresa's Catholic Church and cooks dinner for students and staff at Our Lady of Corpus Christi College. That's for 50 people, I'm told. She is also president of the Polish Club of South Texas.

We are glad to have her as a member of our Krouzek.

Dorothy McCoy gave a report of the successful and rewarding visit to the Sunnybrook Nursing Home in April. She also brought colorful pictures taken and certificates of appreciation with small pins attached for our members. The attractive pins read, "Volunteers are Shining Stars." Eight of our members took part in a cake bake sale at the nursing home and we

Our Treasurer Norma Baker gave each of us a copy of our income and expenses for the year 2000. This inform - ation will help with our plans for the future since our expenses keep increasing. Action will have to be taken to increase our income.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy The members of Lodge 202, Jourdanton wish to express their sympathy to the family of LUCIA "LUCY" ZEPEDA of Pleasanton, who passed away April 23, 2001 at the age of 71.

Lucy was an active community leader and co-founder of the Pleasanton Fireman's Auxiliary She and her husband, the late Margarito "Chuey" Zepeda, were named "Couple of the Year" in 1986 by the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce.

A devout Catholic, Lucy was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church where she was involved in many aspects of the church. She held offices in the Fireman's Auxiliary, was director of the Lions Club and served in many community projects. She actively served her SPJST lodge as Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carla.

She leaves behind four children, Lucy Garris and her husband, Charles "Chuck;" Anna M. Chapa; and Margie Ann Mendez and her husband, Roy, all of Pleasanton; and Louis Zepeda and his wife, Kathryn, of New Berlin; a brother, Antonio Romero of San Antonio; two sisters, Rose Garcia and Filomena Montemayor, both of Pleasanton; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and 18 nieces and nephews.

A rosary was recited April 26 at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton.

Funeral services were held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church with Rev. Carlos Davalos officiating.

Internment followed at San Ysidro Cemetery in Pleasanton. May our departed sister rest in eternal peace.

of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 92 in Fort Worth, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, EMILY KETCHUM, 79, a homemaker, who passed away Thursday, April 26, 2001 in Fort Worth.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Monday, April 30 at Winscott Funeral Chapel. Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 29 at the funeral home.

Emily Annie Ketchum was born May 28, 1921 in Shiner. She was a beloved mother and grandmother who will be missed by her family and friends.

Survivors are son, Robert Vaclavik and wife, Cheryl of Fort Worth; daughter, Barbara Horton and husband, Jack of Joshua; grandchildren, Mary Baker

of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Academy SPJST Lodge 177, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge brother, JOHN ALLEN COX, who died Tuesday, April 24, 2001 in a Temple hospital at the age of 66.

Mr. Cox was born in Abbott, Texas to George E. Cox, Jr. and Mozelle Cox on September 7, 1934. He married Louise Lancaster on April 13, 1963.

He served in the United States Marine Corps and Marine Reserves.

He worked in the construction trade as a union brick mason with Local 9 of Texas for 45 years. He retired from Fort Hood as a civil service employee.

Mr. Cox renewed an interest in art and was an art student at Temple College. Exhibits of his works were in several local galleries. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Temple and SPJST Lodge 177, Academy.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Lancaster Cox of Temple; daughter, Anne Harmon and husband, Randy and granddaughter, Katie, all of Fort Worth; son, James and wife, Kathryn and granddaughter, Faith, all of Cedar Park; mother, Mozelle Cox of Hillsboro; and brothers, Bob Cox of Houston and George E. Cox, III of Cleburne.

He was preceded in death by his father, George E. Cox, Jr. of Abbott.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m.

Friday, April 27, 2001 at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Reverend Andy Andrews and Chaplain Dwayne Jones officiating.

Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park.

of Eddie Bubenik Eddie Victor Bubenik, 82, of San Angelo went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 18, 2001. He died peacefully in a local hospital after a brief illness.

A rosary service was recited at 6 p.m., Friday, April 20 in Johnson's Funeral Home.

Chapel Funeral Mass was scheduled at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 21 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Wall with burial in St. Ambrose Cemetery.

The Reverend Charles Greenwell celebrated Mass.

Eddie was born September 8, 1918 in Veribest to Otto Bubenik and Frances Strakos Bubenik. He was one of seven children and grew up on a farm learning the trade from his father.

The only time he spent living away from this area was during World War II when he served in the United States Air Force, spending much of that time stationed in the Pacific.

Eddie was married to Evelyn Joyce Motl on November 18, 1946 in St. Ambrose Catholic Church. They had a son, Chris Bubenik of Wall, who has carried on with the family farming operation, and a daughter, Joyce Piland also of Wall.

Eddie loved to see things growing—cotton, milo, wheat, livestock and his family—everything except weeds. His fields were always some of the cleanest around with the straightest rows. He and his wife, Evelyn, lived near Wall and farmed side-by-side in the Wall and Veribest communities for many years before retiring and moving to San Angelo in 1991.

He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, the Wall Volunteer Fire Department, Wall Young Farmers, Knights of Columbus, SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo and the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

For the past several years, Eddie battled numerous major health problems, but through it all never became His gentle, sweet nature and pleasant smile will be remembered by his family—that always came first—and his many friends.

He was a hard worker, and for many years, one of his best friends was his John Deere tractor.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Bubenik; and one sister, Ella Braden.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Jackie Bubenik of Wall; son-in-law

and daughter, Tim and Joyce Piland of Wall; grandchildren, Chance Ames and wife, Mary Helen, Danny Piland and wife, Peggy, all of San Angelo, Jessica Bubenik of Lubbock and Chase Bubenik and Patrick Bubenik, both of Wall; two great-grandchildren, Selena Ames and Anton Aitches, both of San Angelo; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Betty. Bubenik of San Angelo and Julius and Debris Bubenik of Houston; two sisters, Mary Havlak of San Angelo and Lillie Pechacek of Kingsville; two sisters-inlaw, Lillian Pagel of San Angelo and Lorraine Motl Houston; several nieces and nephews; and numerous friends and special neighbors.

Pallbearers were Chance Ames, Danny Piland, Chase Bubenik, Ronnie Bubenik of Mineral Wells, Dennis Bubenik of Houston and Bill Juroska of Troy. Honorary pallbearers were Albert and Julius Bubenik, B.J. Havlak of St. Lawrence, Edward Werner of. San Angelo and Daniel Jansa, Cliff Hohensee and Rodney Ripple, all of Wall.

The family wishes to thank Monsignor Larry Droll, the Reverend Tommy Tallas, sister, Jose Moos, Lillian Pagel and Dr. Jack Rice and his staff for many years of care and Dr. Walter Hewell and other physicians and staff and ICU staff at San Angelo Community Medical Center for the loving care given to Eddie during his most recent illness.

Youth Letters Section Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club reports on April meeting Dear Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club, Our last meeting was held on April 8 at 2 p.m. Our President Desi Cooksey led the meeting. Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje youth members design, decorate baskets March Meeting On Wednesday, March 14, 2001, the El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club enjoyed a night out at Mr. Gattis Pizza during spring break. Everyone enjoyed the soup and salad bar and eating all the pizza they could eat. A short meeting was held and everyone was reminded to design and decorate their own Easter basket. The baskets were to be judged at our April meeting and prizes will be awarded.

Everyone, was also reminded to dress comfortable and enjoy a great Easter egg hunt.

April Meeting The El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club held its monthly meeting at the lodge on Sunday, April 8, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. Each youth brought their own decorated and designed Easter baskets to the meeting. They really were pretty. The baskets were judged and each youth was rewarded with a nice prize.

The youth enjoyed a great Easter egg hunt. Everyone's baskets was full of eggs.

After the egg hunt, the youth did a craft activity. At the end of our meeting, the children enjoyed presenting their Easter baskets to the adults and telling them how they made and decorated their own baskets. The youth did a wonderful job.

After the meeting, everyone enjoyed many tasty refreshments.

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club to visit SeaVVorld Dear Readers, The Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club held its meeting on Monday night at the Italian Express Pizzeria and Grill

at 6 p.m. Fourteen members were present.

We ate pizza and then held our regular meeting, including the election of officers. Our new officers for 20012002 are as follows: President Crystal Bartek Vice President Janet Baca Secretary Amber Rice Treasurer Lisa Greger Reporter Dawn Capps Our youth club had planned a vacation to Bastrop State Park, but due to reservations, we had to change our plans to a day of fun in the sun at SeaWorld! While there, we will also take the behind the scenes tour where we will be able to feed and pet the animals.

On our sick list this month is Amber Pechal, who had a run in with the kitchen cabinet and one of our youth club moms, Karen Flaherty,. who is hopping around on one leg.

Rumor is she and her dance partner had a little trouble. Get well wishes are extended to all of them along with wishes for a speedy recovery to Patsy Koslovsky! It's great to see Terry Flaherty doing so well.

Our next meeting will be June 7 at 7 p.m., during which time we will honor our graduating seniors Rebecca Greger and Randall Marek.

treat bags were distributed to the youth members.

SPJST members ages six to high school senior.

Our youth club members will be preparing for Youth Achievement Days in the next few months. Please encourage them and show them your support. Ask them what they are entering in YAD. How about inviting the royalty contestants to present their speeches and the talent contestants to perform their talents at your lodge's June or July meeting. This will show the young people that you care and also give them added confidence when they perform to the judges at YAD. Adults and youth— coming together to succeed!

LIT Workshop June 1 to 3 High school youth club members (incoming freshman to high school senior) are encouraged to become a leader-in-training and attend the LIT Workshop set for Friday, June 1 to Sunday, June 3.

The workshop will be held at

Greene Family Camp in BrucevilleEddy, which is located off 1-35 between Temple and Waco. LITs must have attended at least one year of district camp in order to attend the workshop. The workshop theme is "Survivor." Lots of learning and exciting activities are planned for the LITs. Youth club members must submit an LIT application and a green camp form to their youth leaders. The youth leader and the DYC must then recommend the youth to attend the workshop. LIT applications are due May 15 to your DYC. For an application, please call or email me or talk to your youth leader or DYC. Flag Day Essay Contest I encourage all youth members to enter a poem or an essay about the American flag in the Flag Day Contest.

Join Hands Day June 16 June 16 is a big day. It is a great day of giving, caring and sharing. Join Hands Day is a fun experience that helps individuals change the way they think about people of other generations. The event is sponsored by America's Fraternal Benefit Societies.

The 20 top projects in the nation will receive $1,000 for the beneficiary of their project or another cause.

Wouldn't it be great to see an SPJST youth club receive one or more of these awards.
