Fraternalism is a spiritual bond that borrows from each of these and, in return, yields goodwill and service to others. More than 50,000 people representing more than 200 nonprofit groups, community agencies and corporations participated in the first Join Hands Day held on June 17, 2000. "The focus of the day — developing youth and adult partnerships throudi neighborhood volunteering — is very important. When the reports came in, we were pleasantly surprised to see how creative project leaders were in bringing different generations together," said Join Hands Day President John Dutton. Thanks to everyone who for their generous donations! With two weeks to go in this year's drive, the goal — $14,000 — remains in sight. Spreading Good Cheer Members of the Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club paid a recent visit to St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Dallas to deliver hand-made Valentines, longstem carnations and good cheer to residents. "It will certainly be a day that all will remember," writes SPJST State King Jarod Olds, who is also a member of the Lodge 84 Youth Club.

Past directors "doing what comes naturally" PART II (Editor's Note: Thanks to Sister Effie Rosene, Chairman and President of the Czech Cultural Center, Houston, who contributed extensively to this article.) Louis Hanus: A Man of Principle "Louis is one of the hardest working and enthusiastic fraternalists I have ever known," says Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir. "His efforts on behalf of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum will help to ensure that our generation builds a lasting tribute to the pioneer fathers and mothers who are the backbone of the SPJST." Brother Hanus came by his service to others naturally. Leading by example, his parents instilled in him that service to others was an expected thing. Many times Louis's mother would chastise his father for giving his last dollar to someone in need. Perhaps the most defining characteristic passed along to him by his parents was an appreciation for the language, history and traditions of the Czech people. That — and an appreciation for the American ideas and ideals of democracy and freedom. And, that with hard word and dedication, great things were possible. One instrument for accomplishing this was participation in Czech organizations such as the SPJST and Sokol. To say that Louis grew up in the SPJST would be an understatement. He has been a member for 72 years and quite literally grew up in the shadow of Lodge 88, Houston's first home on Robbie Street. In that time, his work in the lodge and the .SPJST has touched many lives and been an inspiration to others. An Inspiring Visit Others, too, have have inspired Brother Hanus, including Dr. Henry R. Maresh — author of "The Czech Pioneers of the Southwest." Dr. Maresh was the attending physician to all the Czech families in Louis's neighborhood. He treated Brother (Continued on page 4.)
