LAM Directors Invite Your Input Share Your Thoughts The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum Board of Directors meets on Saturday, March 10 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. A range of topics, including the need to establish clearly defined goals and objectives will be discussed.

LAM President Glenn Kaminsky encourages members to attend the meeting, listen and feel free to contribute any ideas they may have to the decision-making process. The meeting is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. If you will not be able to attend the meeting but would still like to register your input, please consider contacting Brother Kaminsky or your district LAM director. They are as follows:

Learning the importance of listening, discussing and disagreeing respectfully are key elements of establishing a successful lodge .. .

And, while we're on the subject, please note that "Spring Meeting Season" gets underway this Sunday, March 4, as Lodges 65 and 91 in Crosby host the District Five Spring Meeting at the American Legion Hall in Crosby.

Other spring meeting dates are posted on the calendar which appears on page eight.

On page five, SPJST sales representatives, especially, will want to take note of information presented under the section titled "State Field Representatives." In conjunction with the SPJST's Mission 2100 program, the Supreme Lodge voted to award incentives of $250 to sales representatives who recommend new non licensed agents and $400 to sales representatives for recommending a new licensed agent. For the incentive to be awarded, it will be necessary for the new sales representative to have at least six certificates issued in the twelve months following his or her appointment. A detailed report on incentives available to sales representatives, lodge officers and lodges through the Mission 2100 program will appear in next week's Vestnik.

Finally, if you read the minutes, you'll note that this was the farewell meeting for outgoing District Six Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Matt Vanek and District Five Director Louis Hanus. Both of these gentlemen will be profiled in next week's Vestnik.

SPJST introduces two new sales representatives The SPJST is pleased to announce the appointment of of the following sales representatives: Denise Brown, Lodge 224, Waxahachie/District Three, as a new sales representative. Denise resides in Corsicana with her husband, Jerry.

Damon Perez, Lodge 92, Fort Worth/District Three, as a new sales representative. Damon lives in Fort Worth with wife, Teri; they have four children, Wesley Perez, Travis Perez, Bryson Turner and McKenzie Turner.

Damon started with SPJST at age 13 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood and later transferred to Lodge 92 after moving to Fort Worth in 1997 where he serves on the By-Law Committee. He also

serves as District Three First Vice President. Damon's hobbies include his kids (which he says are a hb.ndful).

The regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST was called to order by Chairman of thee Board Vanek at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Leshikar, President Gene McBride, Vice President Lanita Anglin, Secretary-Treasurer Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor Donnie Victorick - District I Frank Klinkovsky - District II

The Supreme Lodge members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of the deceased members.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Director Ahlstrom, Director Pflughaupt and Editor Vanicek to the meeting.

AUDIT - The bank audit of stocks and bonds was completed December 28, 2000 by Independent Auditor Henry L. S. Jezek, Director Klinkovsky, Vice President McBride and Secretary-Treasurer Anglin.

The following audit assignments were made: Auto and time logs - Director Victorick and Director Klinkovsky Invoices - Director Broz, Director Bayer, and Director Vanek Ledgers - Director Hanus and Director Ahlstrom Director Pflughaupt went to the Legal Advisor's office The officers are to be available for any assistance needed.

Director Krizan requested to be excused from the afternoon session to attend a court hearing and was granted his request.

There was a discussion as to the previous directors being part of the audit team.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Broz, to elect the chairman and the incoming directors take their seat. Motion passed unanimously.

The chair was turned over to President Leshikar who asked for nominations for Chairman of the Board. Director Broz nominated Director Bayer. Director Pflughaupt nominated Director Victorick. The election was done by secret ballot. The vote was nine for Director Bayer and three for Director Victorick.

Vice President McBride nominated Director Broz for Vice Chairman. Motion was seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas. There being no other nominations, Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Bayer to elect Director Broz by acclamation. Motion carried unanimously.

Director Bayer thanked everyone for electing him and then stated, "We all took an oath at the Convention. Our membership chose us to represent them. We promised to faithfully follow the by-laws of the SPJST and the wishes of the membership in carrying out our duties to the best of our ability. We all need to work together as one. Let us not show any hostility or ill feelings toward one another.

We are here to do a job for our members. Let us work out our problems together in harmony. Everyone will get their say. There is no need to raise our voices. An old saying that I heard from one of my uncles was 'Why did you jump into my talk?' I am asking all of you not to jump into another talk until he has finished."

Director Broz expressed his appreciation for being re-elected Vice Chairman of the Board. Director Bayer relinquished the chair to Director Vanek until the.

Old Business is completed.

MINUTES - The Minutes were gone through page by page.

On Page 327, at the end of the second line of paragraph two, add for clarification "effective 1-1-2001".

On Page 329, the date for the mail poll is to be changed to September 21, 2000.

On Page 331, under District VII change the word "another" changed to "graded."

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to accept the Minutes with corrections. The Board went into executive session to review the Executive Minutes from the October 2000 meeting.

Recess was taken from 9:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

BY-LAWS - President Leshikar referred to Article 37 (b) (1) about the need to adhere to the agenda and his opinion that no vote or discussion of anything that is not on the agenda could be done. There was a discussion about the possibility of items coming up that are not on the agenda.

4/VESTNIK-Wednesday, February 28, 2001 FRATERNALIST OF THE YEAR - There was a discussion as to whether or not the Supreme Lodge was to vote on the Fratemalist of the Year or if an outside group was to do it. The consensus of the Supreme Lodge was the decision was to be an outside group. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, for an outside group to make the selection if the selection can be made by the end of January. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a discussion about when a substitute director or committee person can take over. The consensus of the Board was the substitute should not take over for an item only or even for one day.

SPJST HISTORY - President Leshikar reported the SPJST History should be completed by the end of the meeting.

STATE FAC - State Fraternal Activities Coordinator John Wells was welcomed to the meeting. He stated his goal was to visit every lodge and not concentrate on the targeted lodges only. He stated the lodges need to know the Supreme Lodge cares about them and hopes to reactivate five lodges in the next twelve months.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT - State Youth Director Zavodny was welcomed to the meeting. She reported on the Texas Fraternal Congress, the Christmas Open House, and helping to design the Youth Achiever brochures. Vice President McBride expressed his appreciation to State Youth Director Zavodny for her help in working with the marketing department.

STATE FIELD REPRESENTATIVES - Vice President McBride reported Karen Kaspar is the new state field representative for Districts VI and VII and Lynn Johnsen is the new state field representative for Districts I and V. Vice President McBride provided a list of the sales representatives that have not sold any certificates in the past four years. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to approve Vice President McBride's recommendation of placing sales representatives that have not sold certificates in four years in an inactive status and before they can sell, they must attend a sales training class. Motion passed unanimously.

INSURANCE PRODUCTS - Vice President McBride reported the mail out of the Senior Life Brochure had received 350 responses, with eleven Senior Life certificates being sold. The new marketing brochure information will be presented at the April meeting.

The Elite 30 has been approved by Texas Department of Insurance and rate cards and software should be distributed in a few weeks.

The suggestion box was brought in to the Board Room and one suggestion was read. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Victorick, that in the future, no suggestion will be accepted unless it is signed and dated. Motion passed unanimously.

Former Vice President Mikeska was welcomed to the meeting.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented a report of the local lodges that the Home Office had not received an update of the 2000 officers. The lodges were: Lodge 14, Lodge 188, Lodge 5, Lodge 35, Lodge 82, Lodge 167, Lodge 157, Lodge 149, Lodge 191, Lodge 114, Lodge 156, Lodge 162, Lodge 143, Lodge 184.

MUSEUM - President Leshikar reported 452 individuals had visited the museum in the past quarter and the Christmas Open House was well received by the community.

IRS forms 990/990T have not been received from lodges: Lodge 188, Lodge 20, Lodge 29, Lodge 35, Lodge 66, Lodge 154, Lodge 180, Lodge 63, Lodge 143, Lodge 184.

Director Krizan was excused from the meeting. The meeting was recessed from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to complete the audit.

LODGE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported five lodges received the 0% interest loans in 2000 and two lodges have made application for these loans in 2001.

Recess was taken from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

AUDITS - Director Victorick reported the auto logs were checked. The employees need to be sure their name is on the log book when they use the car, and if there is a problem with the car, report it to the supervisor. Director Bayer and Director Broz reported that the invoices showed advertising expenses were high for the last six months, and there were four telephone bills from one company during August. Director Hanus and Director Ahlstrom reported the ledgers were in order. Director Klinkovsky reported the bonds and stocks in the bank were all accounted for.

There was a discussion about the time/activity logs. Director Pflughaupt moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky, for the officers and editor to discontinue keeping the time/activity logs. The state field representatives, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, and State Youth Director will continue keeping the time/activity logs. The mileage logs for each vehicle will also continue to be kept. This will be effective January 1, 2001. Motion passed unanimously.

SALES - Vice President McBride reported there were 133 fewer applications written in 2000 as compared to 1999. He congratulated Districts IV, VI and VII for meeting their quotas. Vice President McBride presented the incentives for the sales representatives during 2001. The incentives were reviewed and by common consent the Supreme Lodge approved the incentives as recommended

by Vice President McBride.

NEW LODGES - Vice President McBride reported on the new lodges in process. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to remove Lodge 209-Hamilton and Lodge 217-Spring from the list of lodges in process. Motion passed unanimously. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to add Lodge 209-Brownwood as a lodge in process.

Motion passed unanimously. Lodge 205 is scheduled for chartering on February 4, 2001.

COMMISSIONS - Actuary John Agee is reviewing the commission structure of all the insurance products and will present his opinion in the April meeting.

ERRORS AND OMMISSIONS - Vice President McBride has contacted a firm about E&O coverage and will provide the information to the Supreme Lodge in the April meeting.

REINSURANCE - Vice President McBride moved to raise blood testing on application from $50,001 to $100,000, and raising the requirement for a urine specimen to start at $50,000.00, this would be effective February 1, 2001.

Motion seconded by President Leshikar, and passed unanimously. Vice President McBride will present information about raising the amount of retention at the next meeting.

MANAGING GENERAL AGENT - Vice President McBride reported there is no MGA available for life insurance companies. SPJST can contract through another company to sell long-term care and Vice President McBride will provide further information at the next meeting.

VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported in the year 2000 the subscription was increased by 519. The cost of printing the Vestnik is- approximately $966 per week and postage amounts to approximately $1,400.00.

CALENDARS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there were 26,620 calendars mailed for 2001. Mailing cost amounted to 13 cents per calendar.

BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the budget for 2000. The items were compared to the budgeted amount and the actual income and expense amount. The income was 95% of the budgeted amount and the expenses exceeded the budgeted amount by 7%.

REFUND TO LODGES - Financial Secretary Mikulas presented a letter from Actuary John Agee recommending the refund be set at $1.00 per paid up certificate and $8.50 per premium paying certificate excluding annuities. The following lodges will not receive a refund at this time: 5, 14, 20, 29, 35, 63, 82, 89, 106, 110, 114, 137, 149, 157, 162, 167, 191, 156, 171, 181, 184, 188 , and 195, 154, and 180. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to pay the amount recommended by Actuary John Agee and the checks would be mailed. Motion passed unanimously.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCY/FORECLOSURE - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on threatened foreclosures, foreclosures in process, bankruptcies, and interim loans.

PROPERTY- Legal Advisor Kacir reported on the lease with the City of Temple for the property east of the Home Office. The property would be leased for 10 years with an option for 5 more years. The property at the corner of 3rd and French is available for sale and Legal Advisor Kacir made a report on the property.

NAME CHANGE - Legal Advisor Kacir reported when the name change is approved every certificate holder must be notified of the name change within 45 days.

It was agreed on motion by Legal Advisor Kacir, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to authorize the Supreme Lodge Vice President to sign documents whenever the President is out of the office on business or otherwise, and the Financial Secretary attest documents whenever the Secretary-Treasurer is out of the office on business or otherwise. It was also agreed to ratify any such instances occurring prior to adoption of this motion. Motion carried unanimously.

EDITOR/DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS - Editor Vanicek expressed his pleasure in working with Director Hanus and Director Vanek. He reported on the estimate he had received to have e-mail at each employee's desk. He also reported the SPJST web site will be updated this quarter.

Wednesday, February 28, 2001—VESTNIK/5 DISTRICT I - Director Victorick expressed the pleasure he had working with Director Hanus and Director Vanek and wished them the best. He attended Christmas parties at Lodges 186, 189, 9, and 57. He also attended sales classes in Lodge 67 and Lodge 186.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky reported on attending the Domino Tournament at Lodge 48, the District Officers' meeting, insurance classes at Taylor and Lodge 47 and Christmas parties at Lodge 47 and the Home Office.

He contacted all the lodges in his district to submit their 990/990T for 1999. He expressed his pleasure in working with Director Hanus and Director Vanek.

DISTRICT III - No report.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz reported on attending meetings at Lodge 215, Lodge 76, Lodge 160, and Lodge 49. He visited lodge 76, Lodge 157, and Lodge 222 with State Field Representative Rollwitz. Director Broz thanked Director Vanek for all that he had done for the SPJST over the past four years and Director Hanus for all that he has done for the SPJST. DISTRICT V - Director Hanus attended meetings at Lodges 81, 172, 191, and 88. He installed officers at Lodge 172 and 81. He thanked everyone for what they had done for him in the past and wished everyone much more success.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer thanked everyone for the cards and flowers at his father's death. He attended the Insurance seminars at Lodge 79 and 107. He attended the Christmas parties and installed officers at Lodge 202 and 107.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek expressed his enjoyment in working with Director Hanus for the last 20 years. He is well satisfied with the success in District VI. He was honored for being nominated and serving as chairman and is satisfied with what has been accomplished. He wished good luck to everyone.

Vice President McBride thanked Director Vanek for his help while he was State Field Manager and that Director Vanek had made him look good. Financial Secretary Mikulas wished Director Vanek and Director Hanus well and that they will be missed. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin wished both Director Hanus and Director Vanek well and expressed her appreciation for what they had done for the Society. Legal Advisor Kacir expressed his appreciation to Director Hanus and Director Vanek and thinks they helped to accomplish a lot. President Leshikar thanked Director Hanus and Director Vanek for their hard work to the Society. Director Vanek presented the gavel to Chairman Bayer.

WORKSHOP - There was a discussion as to how to extend invitations to the local lodges for the workshop/banquet. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded

by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, for the President and Vice President to phone the president and secretary of each lodge that does not respond to the invitation to attend the banquet and invite the lodge officers. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a discussion concerning holding small local lodge workshops.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, for the officers to present a workshop in conjunction with the spring district meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to approve the incentive on new producing sales representatives and new lodges. There are grants for a local lodge to change from quarterly to monthly meeting, for a lodge to move from dormant to active status and for new youth clubs being organized. Voting in favor: President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Victorick, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom and Director Bayer. Voting against: Legal Advisor Kacir, Abstaining: Director Klinkovsky. Motion passed.

There was a discussion as to incentives for sales representatives that recommend others to be sales representatives. Director Krizan moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to award incentives of $250 to sales representatives that recommend a non-licensed agent and $400 for recommending a licensed agent.

The agent has to have six certificates issued in a twelve-month period from the time of being fully trained for the incentive to be awarded. Motion passed unanimously.

Vice President McBride reviewed the Sales Representative 2001 Incentive Program which was the same as for the year 2000. He recommended adding to the incentive that if a sales representative has fifty or more applications issued their picture will be on display at the Home Office. Director Broz moved, seconded by Director Ahlstrom, to accept the sales representative incentive program as presented. Motion carried unanimously. By common consent it was agreed to have a banquet for the producing sales representatives in each district that makes its quota.

Recess was taken from 5:10 p.m. until 8:00 a.m.

Bruce Bading of IBM was welcomed to the meeting. He answered questions concerning the internet and security of the AS400. Director Ahlstrom moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, to have separate e-mail accounts set up for any officer that wants it. Motion passed unanimously.

REAL ESTATE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented recommendations for mortgages that are over 90 days past due and moved to accept the recommendations. Financial Secretary Mikulas seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to set a reserve of $6,000 on mortgage loans that are past due. Motion seconded by Director Klinkovsky, and passed unanimously.

INTEREST SENSITIVE PRODUCTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to leave the interest rate of universal life at 7.25% through April 30, 2001.

Motion seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Voting in favor were Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Broz, Director Klinkovsky, Director Victorick, SecretaryTreasurer-Anglin, Director Bayer, Director Ahlstrom, and Director Pflughaupt.

Voting Against: President Leshikar, Director Krizan, Financial Secretary Mikulas, and Vice President McBride. Motion passed.

STATE TOURNAMENTS - President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, to increase the payment to a local lodge for holding a state tournament from $200 to $350. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a discussion concerning the interest rates of annuities. By common consent it was decided to send letters to those who have Annuity I and encourage them to transfer their annuity to the Annuity II Plan. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to set Annuity I interest rate at 5.50%; Annuity II at 6.5%; Roth Annuity at 6.5%, and the Immediate Annuity at 6.5% through April 30, 2001.

Motion seconded by Vice President McBride and passed unanimously.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS CLUB - President Leshikar is to present information at the April meeting about a community partners club.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer moved, seconded by Director Broz, to ratify the investments for the last quarter.

AD VALOREM TAXES - President Leshikar reported there might be a need for members to make personal contact with State Senators to help get the ad valorem tax bill passed.

HOME OFFICE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on the need for some employees to have a private area to work because of the confidentiality of their work. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to spend a maximum of $16,000.00 in providing private work areas. Motion passed unanimously.

Recess was taken from Noon to 12:45 p.m.

WORKSHOP - There was a discussion concerning the schedule for the Workshop/Banquet. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt, to have the TABC offer a short course on serving alcohol. There would be no cost to the society and the meal would be on your own. Motion passed unanimously.

Director Krizan returned to the meeting. An executive session was held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. to discuss salaries of the employees.

NEEDS ANALYSIS - Vice President McBride reported on the incorporation of a needs analysis program into our current illustration system.

STATE FIELD REPRESENTATIVES - Vice President McBride presented the incentives for the state field representatives. There was a lengthy discussion on the incentives. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by SecretaryTreasurer Anglin, to approve the recommended district override commissions and the district incentives if the District quotas are met. Motion passed unanimously.

MAIL POLL - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Broz, to ratify the mail poll approving the design of the new logo. Motion passed unanimously.

ASSETS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the annual report shows a loss in assets of $2,296,087.11. Income decreased by 6% over 1999 and expenses increased by 9%. The total assets are iu excess of $131 million.

BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas went over the proposed budget line by line. There was a discussion about the amounts. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Vice President McBride, to approve the budget for 2001.

Motion passed unanimously.

PREMIUM REFUND - Financial Secretary Mikulas presented a letter from Actuary John Agee recommending the premium refund to members to be at a rate of 3% less an expense charge of $.35 for premium paying and $1.60 for paid-up certificates. The refunds will not include certificates written under the 1980 CSO Mortality Table. Refund checks must be for at least $2.25 before

INDEPENDENT AUDIT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the independent audit would be completed 6-30-2001 at a cost of $10,000.00.

INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the lodges that had won incentives. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to pay $35 per certificate on the in between steps of the local lodge incentive program. Effective for the 2000 incentive program. Motion passed unanimously.

QUARTERLY STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the quarterly statement that was submitted to the Texas Department of Insurance.

VICE PRESIDENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to adjust the Vice President salary effective February 1, 2001 in accordance with the Finance Committee's report. Motion passed unanimously.

EQUIPMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on a smart mailer, which will put the zip code plus 4, the postage and bar code on mailings. The project cost is $12,299.00. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Pflughaupt to approve the purchase of a smart mailer. Motion passed unanimously.

COMMISSION - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported information on direct deposits of agents' commission checks will be available in the April meeting.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST - The Society's procedure for reporting conflict of interest involves the signing of a statement after reviewing the adopted resolution on the matter. Each Supreme Lodge member was given the opportunity to report conflict of interest and return the signed statement. No conflict was reported.

RESOLUTION Statement of Policy Concerning Conflict of Interest STATE OF TEXAS COUNTY OF BELL BE IT REMEMBERED that at a regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), held at its regular place of meeting at Temple, Texas, on the 12h day of January, 2001, at which meeting a quorum was present and voting, the following Resolution was adopted:

Legal Advisor Kacir reported on anew privacy law going into effect July 1, 2001. Everyone will need to be very respectful of people's health and financial records.

Chairman Bayer appointed Director Ahlstrom and himself to the Youth Committee.

DISTRICT I - Director Victorick congratulated Director Bayer on being elected chairman. He expressed the need for everyone to support the Mission 2100 program.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky requested everyone to support the Mission 2100 program. He enjoyed the meeting and thought lots of good decisions were made.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan congratulated Director Bayer on being elected Chairman and Director Broz on being elected Vice Chaii man. Lodge 35 will be celebrating their 100th Anniversary on February 3, 2001, and everyone is invited.

Director Krizan expressed need for guaranteed insurance for members that have a small certificates. Director Krizan told the Supreme Lodge members in order to reach the Mission 2100, 175 applications need to be written every month or 41 applications need to be written every week.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz congratulated Director Bayer on being elected chairman and he welcomed Director Pflughaupt and Director Ahlstrom.

Director Broz thanked President Leshikar and Legal Advisor Kacir for working on tax relief for the lodges. He inquired from President Leshikar as to why there are so many youth attending the Texas Fraternal Congress.

There was a discussion about Holiday greeting in the Vestnik. Director Broz moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to have Holiday Greetings from Supreme Lodge members in the Christmas issue of the Vestnik. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT V - Director Pflughaupt congratulated Director Bayer and Director Broz on their election. He has attended meetings at Lodge 81, Lodge 156, Lodge 142, Lodge 172, Lodge 196, and Lodge 88. He stated a need for simplified paperwork from the Home Office and a refresher course for sales representatives on all the products. He thought Mission 2100 is a good idea and that it will succeed.

DISTRICT VI - Director Ahlstrom congratulated Director Bayer and Director Broz on their election. He reported the District VI barbecue is set for September 14 and 15 at Lodge 40.

RESOLVED: That the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST), a Fraternal Life Insurance Society (1) believes that the insurance business is affected with a public interest and is dependent upon public confidence, and (2) expects employees, officers and directors to conduct their personal financial interests and affairs so as to avoid placing such interests in conflict, direct or indirect, with those of the Company and to avoid conduct which might impair their judgment with respect to the business of the Society.

DISTRICT VII - Chairman Bayer welcomed Director Ahlstrom and Director Pflughaupt and, stated he looked forward to working with them. There was a discussion about the way comp time is being tracked. Director Victorick moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to enforce the handbook concerning comp time and to use a standardized form for all comp time reporting. Motion passed unanimously.

The following are regarded as illustrative of the principal situations where such conflict may be involved:

Chairman Bayer reported on presenting a donation to the Mom's Club of Wilson County. He thanked everyone for their cooperation during the meeting.

1. Financial Interest Employees, officers, directors or members of their families having a material interest in any corporation or incorporated enterprise which sells goods or services to, buys from, competes with the Society in the sale of insurance, or borrows from the Company and who are in a position to influence any decision by the Society with respect to such transactions.

The meetings for the Supreme Lodge meetings were set for April 10, 11, and 12 to begin at 8:30 a.m.; July 17, 18, and 19 to begin at 8:30 a.m.; and October 9, 10, and 11 to begin at 8:30 a.m.

The meeting adjourned at 1:20 p.m.

Inside Inforniation Employees, officers, or directors directly or indirectly using or divulging inside confidential information with respect to the Society for the purpose of securing personal profit or advantage for themselves or others or in a manner prejudicial to the interest of the Society.

3. Gratuities and Entertainment The receipts of loans, gifts, gratuities, entertainment and favors of more than nominal value by employees, officers, directors or members of their families, either directly or indirectly, that may influence any decision with respect to the Society.

While the above are illustrative of ways in which conflict may arise, the entire subject is so far-reaching and the interrelationships possible within the insurance business so complex that the avoidance of conflict rest basically upon each individual's ethical standards, integrity and judgment. Annually, on or about the time of the January Board meeting, a request will be made of all directors, officers and responsible employees to state in writing any activities which conflict with the policy. The statement will be as stated on the attached Exhibit "A".

However, if any officer, director, or responsible employee at any time believes he may be engaged in activities described, he should immediately report such activities to the President.

Around the State District Two Spring Meeting March 18 at Lodge 18, Elgin Special Notice to All District Two Members: This year's District Two Spring Meeting location has been changed to Lodge 18, Elgin on Sunday, March 18.

Registration will start at 12 noon and the meeting will start at 1 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. All members who register by 1 p.m. will receive a ticket for a $75 cash prize drawing. We will have snacks available for those who arrive between 12 noon and 1 p.m. We want all members to be on time for this very important meeting. Not only will we conduct our normal business meeting consisting of reports, 50 and 75 year members, and Fraternalists of the Year nominees, we will also have a program conducted by Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride on the Mission 2100 program.

As most of you know, the Mission 2100 program is a membership campaign for 2001 in which all members are asked to recruit new members.

SPJST needs 2100 new members in 2001, and there's some really great incentives for getting those people to join the SPJST! In addition to the Mission 2100 program, Gene will also conduct an officer training seminar.

This seminar will cover all officer duties of SPJST lodge officers, and will include a question and answer session. It's mportant that all lodge officers attend this district meeting.

Our evening meal will be a delicious dinner prepared by Lodge 18, Elgin. The cost is $2 each and will include meat, vegetable, dessert, and drink. As those of you know who have attended meetings hosted by this lodge, they do a fantastic job of getting the food for us and having the lodge set up "just right" for all the things we do during the spring meeting.

Again, be at the meeting no later than 1 p.m. to be eligible to win the $75 door prize.

District Five Spring Meeting Sunday, March 4 in Crosby The District Five Spring Meeting will be hosted by Lodge 65, Crosby and Lodge 91, Crosby this Sunday, March 4 at the American Legion Hall in Crosby.

Dinner will be served from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The meal will be barbecue and all the trimmings. The price for the meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children under age 12. There will be pastry so all you cooks please bring your favorite pastry. Any pastry that is left over will be auctioned off and be divided between the youth clubs so all youths should bring some pastry to help make money for your club and will also need to work in the pastry booth to help sell the pastry. The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m.

There will be bingo so please bring prizes for bingo and door prizes. So invite your fraternal friends and your sister and brothers from your lodge and come out and visit with everyone who you don't see very often.

There will be an opening in District Five for a position on the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum Board of Directors. This is a new managing committee that was formed at the convention last year. If you are interested, come out and put your name in the hat.

Lodge 25, Ennis welcomes newest member Jodie and Sharon Honza and brother, Jacob announce the arrival of their son and brother, Jarron Michael Honza, born Tuesday, December 19, 2000 at 11:02 a.m. at Ennis Regional Medical Center. Lodge 35, Elk hosts centennial celebration Dear Members, February 11 the meeting was called to order by President Randy Pavelka. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by the membership.

The minutes were read by Carla Pavelka. Barbara Pavelka had another commitment so Carla gave the treasurer's report. The chairperson made their reports. Vice President Freddie Kubitza thanked everyone who helped with the 100th anniversary.

The lodge voted for Randy Pavelka to be a sales representative.

Our next meeting will be March 11 at 3 p.m. Bring some sandwiches for the fellowship.

Centennial Observance The 100th Anniversary celebration turned out very good. So many of the members came out to enjoy the evening. It was like a reunion talking, visiting and looking at all the old picture books and thinking of the people who used to be there. Mary Pavelka gave $20 donation; Janie Lehrman, Peggy Dieterich, Diane Kuehl and Jerry Vicha gave $50 in memory of their father, Rudolph Vicha who was a very faithful member.

Thanks to Howard Leshikar for the speech he made about the years passed. He said Elk Lodge 35 has about 800 members. Howard, thanks for the 100th anniversary banner.

Thanks to Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director, for being there. He has been a lot of help. 49, Rowena tarok tournament set for March 31 Lodge

81, Needville to honor 50-year members in April Lodge

On February 18, 2001, the SPJST Lodge 81 of Needville, held its monthly meeting. I would like to thank everyone for the delicious assortment of sandwiches we had. It was a nice change of pace to have sandwiches during our social. Thanks again to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything organized. • At 1 pm, President, Vincent Newman, opened the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gilbert Walzel. We had a moment of silence for our dear departed members Emil Pollock and Edwin Susan.

The lodge extends its sympathy. All officers answered the roll call.

Added to our sick list is Frances Brauer. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her minutes. There were no corrections, so they were approved as read. Treasurer Benita Walzel read her report. New Business Being that we had no old business to report, we started new business right away. We decided that we will honor our 50-year meeting at the April meeting. Under other business, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel, announced that he and a few other members will cut down the downspouts of the gutters on February 20.

Next Meeting March 18 For our next meeting on March 18, it was decided to have baked and fried chicken. The kitchen chairperson, Darlene Blinka, will look into prices.

The Audit Committee meeting has been postponed until our March 13 meeting.

88, Houston presents minutes of February meeting Lodge

President Helen Hegwood opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. The flags were presented by the Board of Trustees, Jeanette Bender, Carol Liebscher and Hilbert Pechacek who led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Deceased members names were read by our secretary and a moment of silence was observed in their honor.

All officers were present.

Reading of the minutes of the January meeting were read by Secretary Flo Orsag and approved as read.

Correspondence Our secretary read the correspondence. We had a letter from the Home Office announcing that the Supreme Lodge authorized refunds to lodges for 2000 to be paid at a rate of

$8.50 per premium-paying certificate and $1 per paid-up certificate as of December 31, 2000 and she presented our president with a check. There was a thank you note from the family of Bobbie Norsworthy Hammer acknowledging the lodge's expression of sympathy. Also a letter from the Salvation Army thanking the lodge for our recent contribution of canned goods and a letter from the SPJST Home Office for our recent contribution of Czech and English books to the museum and library.

President Helen Hegwood announced that we had a good anniversary day. First Vice President Marie Stayton thanked the flag bearers and said the entertainment committee will present the flags in March. Second Vice President Tillie Helmcamp asked that everyone please let her know when you have news to be put in the paper.

Secretary/Treasurer Roberta Johnson read the January consolidated income report.

Youth Easter Party Set for April 7 Barbara Gonzales, Youth Leader, gave her report. The youth have had a very busy year so far and they have shown an interest in project 2100.

Their Easter party is set for Saturday, April 7. Please try to come and please continue to support your youth.

Sergeant-at-Arms, Johnny Broz, thanked his kitchen help on anniversary day—Paul Beck, Ed Gerlich, John Broz, Gary Blahuta and Dennis Roeder.

Second Vice President Marie Stayton asked Pat Bruce to come forward. She then asked Louis Hanus to come forward and presented him with a plaque for all he has done for the lodge. Louis thanked all for the plaque. Marie then asked Clara Broz to come forward and presented her with a plaque and a corsage. Clara also thanked all for the plaque and there was a cake honoring Louis and Clara.

Betty Theiss of the entertainment committee thanked all who helped her at the dances and gave a rundown of future dances. She also asked that everyone please attend the dances. They have lots of fun.

Chairman of the Board Cleburn Lincke had the heating unit repaired and thanked all those who decorated for Valentine's Day. He thanked Agnes and Tom Haney for repairing the drapes in the kitchen area. Bar Chairman Leander Pflughaupt thanked all who helped in the bar. He also thanked all who sent cards and made phone calls while he was ill.

Pat Bruce, Blue Room committee, thanked everyone who helped with the blue room prize drawing — Jeanette Bender, E.J. Bender, Clara Broz, Marie Stayton and Roberta Johnson. She reminded everyone that the blue room is available to rent for parties, etc.

The Workers Party Chairman, Jeanette Bender, told us that new wallpaper will be put in the ticket booth, the red room and also the trophy cases. Agnes and Tom Haney spent nine hours at the lodge painting the gold trim on the frames in the red room and taking the old wallpaper

off, getting it ready for new wallpaper. The worker's party will be on March 18. The committee chairmen have until Friday at 4 p.m. to get their lists into the office of all those who are eligible to receive invitations to the party.

Kitchen Chairman Hilbert Pechacek thanked all volunteers who helped in the kitchen for anniversary day. He thanked his wife, Willie Mae, for help in calling everyone.

President of the Birthday Club, Flo Orsag, reminded everyone that the Birthday Club is having a coverletmaking party every third Wednesday.

They are making a coverlet to be auctioned at the June meeting (if we can have it ready by then.)

All's Well ...

Social Night Chairman, A.J. Stayton, said he received a letter from the state wanting to see our bingo records. The gentleman took our records with him and came back on Thursday, saying everything was in order. He did say these records should be on the computer so he asked for Roberta's help. A.J. also told us that Mary Kosut has had a heart attack and had angioplasty but is doing fine. Bill Hughes passed away. He was a hard worker at the lodge and will surely be missed.

Scholarship Committee, Vincent Hegwood, thanked Josephine Pflughaupt for making the transition run smoothly. They have received three applicants for scholarships.

Rules and Regulations committee, Gene Barcak, told us the committee went over Article VIII Section V A motion was made and seconded that the new change in Article VIII Section V which was "with the approval of the president or first vice president, has the authority to purchase flowers for members in good standing that have let their dues lapse due to circumstances beyond their control" be accepted. Motion carried.

Wanted: Singers and Piano Player Gene is also President of the Choral Group and he stated that the group sang with the orchestra on anniversary day. They are looking for singers. If you can sing, please come join them. If you know of anyone who would like to play the piano for them, please tell Gene.

Benevolence—Dorothy Pflughaupt made her report. She explained the new forms which you can get in the office. If you have any questions, please call her. Dorothy Novak was chairman of this committee, but since she is so new with the lodge, she gave up the position.

Dorothy Pflughaupt is now the benevolence chairman.

District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt discussed by-laws and regulations. He spoke on the prospective sale or lease of the northeast corner of the home property in Temple. Larry announced that enrollment for the upcoming AARP defensive driving course had fallen short and had to be cancelled. The next course is scheduled for April 26 and 27.

District Five Report District Five Vice President Fred Burl reported that the District Five

Wednesday, February 28, 2001—VESTNIK/11 Spring meeting will be held in Crosby, Texas on March 4, 2001 at the American Legion Hall. Host lodges will be lodge 65-and lodge 91.

Lunch will be served from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Price of the meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children and please bring your favorite pastry for dessert.

The meeting will start at 1:30. Binga will be played in the afternoon.

Please bring prizes for bingo and please bring door prizes. There will also be election of officers. Please come out and join them for a day of fun.

District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton asked that we look on the back table at the Valentines made by our youth to be taken to the Veterans Hospital. On March 6, she is going with the district director to Lufkin. They are finally starting a youth club there.

Our president said that Lynn Johnsen, Districts One and Five and Field Representative, called her today and asked her to honor Mildred Holeman who was Number One in the district for the amount of insurance written for the month of January.

Josephine Buri is with us tonight.

She thanked everyone for the cards and phone calls received while she was ill.

Clara Broz reminded us that we have cemetery lots for sale at a very reasonable price at Brookside Cemetery. If you are interested, please contact her.

King Hegwood mentioned that he is still collecting egg cartons to be used at the food bank.

Guide Josephine Pflughaupt read the names of anniversaries and birthdays celebrated in the month of February. The membership sang, "Happy Birthday" to these celebrants and the anniversary celebrants furnished the beverages after the meeting.

Door prizes of $5 each were won

by Frances Seeburger, Ed Gerlich, Celestine Darilek, Flo Orsag and Georgia Barcak. Everyone was told to look under his chair to see if there was a heart—they were Evelyn Zajicek and Margie Anders who each received boxes of candy.

1. Our Anniversary Celebration had a good dinner and at the head of it was Johnny Broz and his helpers were Edwin Gerlich, Dennis Roder, John Broz, Gary Blahuta and Paul Beck.

2. Mary Quider had charge of the coffee at the celebration and her helpers were: Bessie Kolacny and Julie Kinnamon. Ellen Miculka had charge of the pastry and the Birthday Club will list her helpers.

3. Another fine youth is being active in our lodge and that is Krystal Bender, daughter of Jeanette and E.J. Bender.

5. I surely hope that Nat Gonzales is lots better! Get well greetings go also to Bessie Dewer. I was glad to hear that Lillie Spies is doing fine.

6. Our Secretary-Treasurer Roberta Johnson is quite a busy lady. It is not only the bookkeeping, but the phone rings often!

7. Don't forget that special dance, the St. Patrick's Dance on March 17 with good music by the Fabulous Six (polka and variety).

8. The Birthday Club will have a good dinner on the second Wednesday in March. They always have one on the second Wednesday, so don't miss them.

Don't forget our spring district meeting is this Sunday at the American Legion Hall at Crosby. It starts with a barbecue dinner and social at 12:30. The meeting starts at 1:30 p.m. Do come and show your support for the SPJST. Birthday Club Sisters report on February meeting The Pledge of Allegiance was recited after the President Flo Orsak called the meeting to order at 11:15 a.m., February 14, 2001. Twenty-two members were present.

The minutes were read by Ellen Miculka and were accepted. The treasurer's report was given by Mary Quider and accepted.

Sunshine Chairman Mary Kosut was absent. She has been under the weather.

She had a heart attack, February 3.

John, her husband, took her to Katy Hospital, but they didn't have the equipment for the surgery. So she went to Memorial City on Sunday, February 4 and had surgery on Monday. She didn't

have to have a bypass. They did the balloon procedure and she will stay for two or three days. She went home; then she was back in the hospital for more procedures. I had a call before I got through with my letter that Mary is in the hospital again. Mary, we wish you back soon and wish you a speedy recovery.

Dona Clooney will be Sunshine Chairman as Mary Kosut resigned.

Calcutta was won by Flo Orsag, Estelle Kelly and Lillie Spies.

February birthdays were Josephine Bishop and Bess Witovec. Happy birthday to you.

Kathy Trefell's husband died in Galveston in January 2001. Our sympathy to you and your family. Kathy Trefell was nominated for the honorary member list.

Hostesses for March are Margie Anders, Alice Bily and Evelyn Gutkowski. They will serve. "We are guessing." Cakes will be baked by Alice Bily, Margie Anders and Evelyn Gutkowski.

It Was a First .

The Birthday Club had its first yo-yo meeting and had a lot fun cutting and sewing. We cut about 500 yo-yos.

Some would cut and others would sew.

Those that came out were Ellen Miculka, Flo Orsag, Mary Kosut, Helen Hegwood, Margie Anders, Dona Clooney, Alice Bily, Edna Wehring, Almeida Bravenec and myself, Evelyn Zajicek. The weather was so bad that day, that is why more didn't come. We brought our sack lunches. We really had a good time.

Flo and Calvin went to Oklahoma during the Christmas holidays to see their daughter. It started snowing and they were stranded for a few days, but they made it back okay. They enjoyed their visit with the grandchildren.

Evelyn Mikolas is a little under the weather. We missed you at the meeting.

Josephine Buri and Lillie Spies have been under the weather also. We wish you all a speedy recovery.

If anyone of the Birthday Club Sisters have any news, let me know.

The dinner was very good Valentine's Day—it was Ranch King Chicken, stewed apples and carrots and peas, cake, tea or coffee.

Ann Schnider read the minutes for January since the new secretary/ reporter Julia Dueser was absent. They were approved as read. The prior secretary, Betty Lindsay, recorded the minutes for the newspaper.

Treasurer Evelyn Spacek gave her Sunshine report and reminded the ladies of annual dues which are collected each January.

Hostess Chairman Mary Ann thanked the February hostesses and announced that hostesses for March will be Helen Kubala, Theretta Praslicka and Jean Sparkman.

No old or new business was mentioned at the meeting.

Hall Manager Joyce Tesar gave her report regarding upcoming activities.

Birthdays for February are Pauline Bownlee, Pauline Morbitzer, Rose Nieswiadomy and Mary Ann Kozel.

142, Houston reports on February meeting Lodge

President Keith Kieschnick called our monthly meeting to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday February 11, 2001. Our register showed 28 members present along with six visitors. All stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for a moment of silence for our departed member, Gary Don James. May he rest in peace.

Roll call of officers was given by Secretary Alice Jochen along with the minutes from the previous meeting.

Correspondence was read. Our 75year member is Lillian Schmidt and we have two 50-year members, namely, Gaye Nell C. Brown and Travise W. Schank. Also, our lodge has received the Bronze category award which will be presented at the Lodge Incentive Banquet at Lodge 24, Cyclone on Saturday, February 24, 2001.

All officers' reports were read.

Sick Committee reports Alene Kieschnick had eye surgery and was an out-patient. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

Visitors recognized were Lynn Johnsen, our new State Field Representative, Melanie Zavodny, State Youth Director, Larry Pflughaupt, District Five Director, Edna Wehring and Dorothy Pflughaupt. We welcome

our visitors to our meetings.

New Business The upcoming Barbecue Cookoff is on March 16 and 17 at Lodge 142.

The capsule prize drawing for $50 went unclaimed due to the absence of Angeline R. Schmidt and Brian Tumis.

Next month the drawing will be for $60.

Five cash prizes went to Walter Rosilier, Elmo Walther, Frank Tumis, H.R. Hermis, Nelson Jochen. Four refreshment prizes went to Robert Kieschnick, Chris Schleider, Elizabeth Hermis and Mary Ann Kieschnick.

• Brisket: must turn in 12 slices cut at least 1/4 inch thick

• Ribs: must turn in 12 cut ribs • No garnish, foil, paper, etc. of any kind. Disqualification will result.

• Runners will pick your turn-in up at the turn in time and must witness turn-ins being taken from tagged entry. Do not cut until runners ask for it.

• No outside beer. Beer will be available on site.

• All teams will be responsible for their areas. Please keep areas clean.

Judging Criteria Chicken and ribs will be judged on texture, taste, and overall appearance.

Lodge 204, Stephenville mourns loss of Daniel Russell Members of the lodge were saddened by the loss of one our members on January 13 when Daniel Nathan Russell was involved in a tragic auto accident near Glen Rose, Texas.

Daniel was only 16 years old and a very well-liked student at Burleson High School and in the Drama Club and was hoping to be an actor when he finished school. He had joined the members of Lodge 204 at the Koffee Kup Restaurant for the annual Christmas party in December for a happy time with the members. He had returned on Saturday, the 13th, to visit his grandparents in Hico and was on his way home when the accident happened.

Our sympathy for the parents Joe and Rebecca Russell, his grandparents, B.J. and Joyce Russell, his aunts, uncles and cousins and all of his friends at Burleson High School.

It is always tragic when we loose someone close to us, but it is a double tragedy when someone so young dies because they are the ones that will be carrying on the work in the future and leading the country when we are too old to do those things.

In Loving Tribute I would like to share a poem that was written by Daniel Russell:

Worth Friendship Club reports on February meeting Fort

The members of the Friendship Club met on Wednesday, February 7, 2001 with 27 members and Martha Clifton's guest, Billie Horton, present.

We were saddened to learn of the death of Alma Anderson in January.

Our sympathy to her family.

We were glad to see that Irene Green is down to only wearing one cast. She took a "topple" and broke her arm and leg. Get well soon.

Joe and Mary Ann Kozel are proud grandparents of Nicholas Harvey Craig who was born on January 31 and weighed six pounds and seven ounces.

His parents are Mark and Barbie (Kozel) Craig of Austin.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, HENRY GROSSMAN of Robinson who died Thursday, February 8, 2001 at the age of 80 years.

Services were held Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m. at Bellmead Funeral Home Chapel , with Reverend Larry Buenger officiating. Burial took place at Robinson Cemetery.

Brother Henry worked as a welder for Mercury Tool Co. until his retirement in 1980. He served in World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He attended St. John's United Church oftChrist and was a member of Robinson Cemetery Association. He became an SPJST member of Lodge 66 in January 1974.

Brother Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia Rogas Grossman of 54 years.

Survivors include two children, Allen Grossman and wife, Jackie of Cleburne and Shirley Witt and husband, Mike of Crawford; brother, Walter Grossman of Robinson; two sisters, Velma Rogers of Oklahoma and Annabelle Frosch of Midlothian; six grandchildren, Teri Rodgers, Jeff and Tracy Grossman, Katrina Northcutt and Corey and Casey Witt; and three great-grandchildren, Tori Northcutt, Garrett Grossman and Haven Rodgers.

Services were held Sunday at West Brethren Church with Reverend Don Ketcham and Reverend Lawrence Junek officiating. Burial took place at West Brethren Cemetery.

Sister Helen was born in West to Joseph and Carrie Foit. She graduated from West High School and married Milton Stover who preceded her in death on October 11, 1957. She was then married to Edmund Kudelka who preceded her in death on July 10, 1992.

She enjoyed gardening and being

with her family. She was a member of the American Ex P.O.W. Chapter 1 of Waco; a 50-year member of SPJST; a lifetime member of West Brethren Church; and Sunday school teacher.

She taught Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir and was an active member of the Christian Sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Carole McNeil and husband, Alan of Sugarland and Patte Cloud of Houston; three sisters, Polly Barton and Anna Ruth Lovecky of West and Dorothy Schovajsa of Inez; brother, Robert D. Foit of Irving; two sisters in-law, Doris Foit of West and Josephine Harper of Waco; brother inlaw, Albin Foit of West; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, WILLIAM OTTO PLASEK, 91, who passed away January 31, 2001 in Houston.

Mr. Plasek was born November 16, 1909 in Wesley, Texas to Joseph Plasek and Frances Kappa. Mr. Plasek married Gladys Ernestine Evans in 1935, a union that would last for 65 years. Prior to moving to Houston in 1943, they lived in Rosebud, Texas.

He worked in the pipe fabrication industry retiring in 1977. He was a member of Pipefitters Local 211, a member of SPJST Lodge 88 for more than 50 years, a member of Fullbright United Methodist Church in the Heights. He played the fiddle, played pasture baseball in younger days and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gladys Plasek; sons, Larry Plasek and wife, Jo Ann of Houston, Terry Plasek and wife, Shawney of Conroe; grandchildren, Scott, Chris and Amber Plasek; and great-granddaughter, Shelby Plasek.

The family received friends at Heights Funeral Home on Thursday, February 1, 2001 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services were Friday, February 2 in the funeral home chapel with Phil Rennemer officiating at 1 p.m.

Interment was in Memorial Oaks Cemetery.

We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Slavonic Linden 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, HOMER OWEN MCDOUGAL of Clifton, Texas who died Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at the age of 78 years.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, January 13, 2001 at 10 a.m. at First Methodist Church in Clifton with the Reverend Cleon Flanagan and Reverend Marvin Moore officiating.

Brother Homer attended school at Womack. He married Emma Schraeder in March 1951. They lived in Clifton all of their lives. Brother Homer worked at General Tire in Waco and owned and operated McDougal Repair Shop in Clifton. He served as Sunday School superintendent at First United Methodist Church for 15 years; president of the men's club; board member; and head usher for 18 years.

Brother McDougal was a member of the city council for one year, the Central Texas Fair for 30 years and the Clifton Volunteer Fire Department for 24 years.

He was president of Farmers Mutual Insurance, American Cancer Society and Boy Scout leader. He joined Lodge 66 SPJST in March 1972.

Survivors include wife, Emma of Clifton; son, Jerry McDougal and wife, Sharon; and granddaughter, Carla.

Resolution Committee Margaret Gaidusek Johnnie Gaidusek Darlene Engelke —SPJST-

The officers and members of Lodge 135, Volna Cechie, Ennis, express deepest sympathy to the family of our departed sister ANNIE R. KOUBEK. Sister Koubek was born on the 8th of October 1906 in Crisp, the daughter of Frank and Annie Mica Skrivanek.

She passed away on January 30, 2001 at the age of 94, at the Ennis Care Center. She was reared in the Creechville community and attended school there. On January 1, 1930, she married Frank Koubek. They lived in the Telico community and farmed. He died on June 4, 1936. She worked as a housekeeper and nanny in Dallas until her health required her to retire.

Sister Koubek was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ennis and SPJST Lodge 135. She is survived by one daughter and her husband, Mary Ann and Leslie 0. Kubin of Ennis; one brother, Willie Skrivanek of Ennis; three sisters, Hermina Taraba of Ennis; Pauline Marek of Abbott;and Georgia Wensowitch of Ennis.

Funeral services were held at the Keever Mortuary in Ennis, on February 1. Burial was at Myrtle Cemetery. Services were conducted by the Reverend Bill McConnelee of the First Presbyterian Church. Pallbearers were Mike Wensowitch, Nick Wensowitch, Alex Wensowitch, George Wensowitch, Bill Skrivanek, and George Honza.

Lydia Alholm made a trip to Bossier City on February 12 with the KC group, and yes, she did come, back a big winner.

Rosie Steinman 's daughter, Vicki, was married to Terry Hix in Las Vegas recently. Her family gave Vicki and Terry a lovely reception at the Sokol complete with entertainment. The newlywed game was played with the newly wed couple plus a couple from each of the three generations of the Milan family being the contestants. It was a lot of fun.

Our sympathy goes out to Jeanie Mason and Rose Steinman on the loss of their sister, Mary Renfro.

Mary had so many friends and will be missed by all. May her soul rest in peace. The family did enjoy visiting with their sister, Frances Mamulla and her daughter, Missy, from Illinois during this time of sadness.

I just learned why Billie King missed our December party. She was sailing on the Delta Queen down the Mississippi River. I hear that she had a wonderful time. Apparently, she did think of us as she gave everyone a crochet pocket with cross inside and the poem, "Cross In My Pocket." How beautiful!

Congratulations go out to Linda Lewis who was elected President of the Lodge 92 Ladies group. We know you will do a good job.

Rosemary Gribble celebrated her 95th birthday on February 18 with her family giving her a beautiful party at the Sokol. Rosemary's three children, eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren were all present plus four nieces and one great-niece.

Refreshments were lovely, the Senior Citizens String Band from White Settlement provided the music and Lydia Alholm did a wonderful job of family introductions and background history on Rosemary. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon and Rosemary looked beautiful. Congratulations, Rosemary, on being 95 years young.

Gertrude Dawson is now residing in a Nursing Care Center and Lena Norman is currently in the hospital.

Get well wishes go out to both of you.

February hostesses were Camille Bolcer, Ima Lou LaPlant and Rose Romeo who did a terrific job.

Following the meeting, grace was said and everyone enjoyed a great luncheon. Following, games were played—hear that our new president and new treasurer and a beautiful job at their first meeting.

Thanks go out to Lydia wh6 provided me with all the news as I was unable to attend the meeting. My brother in-law, Charles Kosarek of Arlington, passed away. He will be greatly missed in our family and my love and prayers go out to my sister, Lil. The next meeting will be March 7.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone then.

El Campo-Hillje Youth Club enjoys Valentine's meeting The El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club held its monthly meeting at the lodge on Sunday, February 11, 2001 at 1:30 p.m, We had five members and two guests to attend.

The youth enjoyed doing paper art and designing and decorating their own special Valentine. The youth leader gave each youth and guest a special Valentine and Valentine pencil.

At the end of our meeting, some of the youth read individual Valentine poems to the adults and then all of the youth members and guest read one special Valentine poem all together. The youth did a great job. After the meeting, everyone enjoyed many refreshments.

This exhibition traces nearly a century of costume and scenic design through the work of 12 leading designers from the Czech Republic.

Czech history is filled with periods of repression and loss of national identity. In the last century, under Nazism and Communism, truth was a rare commodity. These artists' ability to use irony and metaphor when the truth could not be heard, made it difficult for official censors to discern the subtext of a production. The end result has been a body .of work recognized as essentially Czech with its own identifiable character, a representation of space as opposed to place.

A program of the Tobin Foundation at the McNay, Metaphor and Irony: Czech Scenic and Costume Design, 1920 - 1999 is produced by the Ohio Arts Council with support from The Ohio State University, Columbus and Lima campuses and the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas.

About the McNay Housed in what was the home of the late Marion Koogler McNay, the McNay Art Museum focuses primarily on 19th and 20th century European and American art. Artists featured include Cezanne, Picasso, Gauguin, Matisse, O'Keeffe, Cassatt and Toulouse-Lautrec. The museum's collection of prints and drawings is one of the finest in the Southwest, while the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts is one of the premier collections of its kind in the country. Contemporary art and modern sculpture are growing strengths of the collection, which now numbers of 13,000 objects. Other areas of concentration include medieval and Renaissance European sculpture and painting. Southwest folk art, and Native American arts and crafts from New Mexico.

Opened in 1954, the McNay was the first modern art museum in Texas.

Marion McNay left her art collection, her mediterranean-style residence and an endowment "for the advancement and enjoyment of modern art." The 23 acres of grounds, which include fountains, broad lawns and a Japanese garden and fish pond, are a popular spot for picnics and photography. The museum also featured a research library with 30,000 volumes, the 300seat Leeper Auditorium and a Museum Store.

exhibition begins March 2 in Houston March 2 through March 31, 2001, Anya Tish Gallery will host an exhibition of paintings by Ondrej Coufal.

Born in January 1979, Coufal lives in Bohemia, Czech Republic. Although barely 22 years old, he has already had 15 exhibitions of his paintings and drawings. This exhibition, the artist's third solo in Houston, is the first in the United States that he will attend. The opening reception will take place on Friday, March 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery is located at 1740 Sunset Boulevard, Houston, Texas, 77005.

Czech Heritage Society spring state meeting March 10 highlighting Dubina Signs of spring will be in the air when Czech Texans from throughout Texas come to Rosenberg, Texas for the Czech Heritage Society of Texas Spring meeting on March 10, 2001.

The meeting, hosted by the Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County will take place at the new Rosenberg Civic and Convention Center on Highway 36, one mile south of US 59 and directly across from the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds.
