O n an annual basis, since 1987, the SPJST has honored an outstanding state-wide fraternalist — someone who demonstrates exceptional service either to the lodge or to the community. Local lodges select their Fraternalists of the Year who are in turn considered for the statewide recognition. The nominee form covers the year for which the nomination is made. The applications are reviewed and a decision is made by an outside selection committee.

By now, most Vestnik readers and active members know that we are two months into "Mission 2100," SPJST's year-long membership drive. Details of the program will be spelled out for lodge leaders at the briefing being held in conjunction with the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards Banquet this Saturday at Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Building new membership takes initiative and looking for ways to bring value to the membership in the SPJST. A good example of this kind of initiative is seen in the SPJST sales representative who systematically contacts his or her lodge members and prospects and then sits down with them to review their existing insurance coverage and evaluate their needs. In doing so, the sales representative performs a valuable service.

There are essentially two things that can cause an individual or a family to outgrow their coverage: (1.) A change in family due to marriage, birth or death; and (2.) Inflation.

Likewise, it's a good idea to check and see if the arrangements you made when the certificate was purchased are still okay, or will the insurance proceeds be going to the wrong people.

Really, It Isn't Hard to Find Fraternalists from around the state meet in Cyclone, Texas this Saturday for the Mission 2100 Briefing and Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet.

Located approximately 12 miles east of Temple, just off Highway 53, Flag Hall isn't all that hard to find as the map above shows. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. with the program starting at 1:30 p.m. The banquet will follow at 5 p.m. and include cash drawings for prizes of $500, $400, $300, $200 and $100. There will also be an optional morning session, starting at 11 a.m., which will address a multitude of concerns and questions related to selling and/or serving alcoholic beverages at SPJST-related events. The free short course will be presented by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and will be open to all interested lodge members. Please direct your registration materials to the Insurance Department or call them at (800) 727-7578 if you have any questions.

State Youth Director reports on Youth Clubs' Fall 2000 Quarter Dear Members, SPJST youth club members were giving and participating this fall (September, October, and November) quarter. Youth clubs honored their grandparents for Grandparent's Day, enjoyed Halloween activities, and participated in parades. Youth clubs at Lodges 9, Snook; 13, Dime Box; and 29, Taylor participated in Make A Difference Day on October 28.

Other youth club activities around the state this quarter included: • Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club entered an educational board for the Burleson County Fair.

They received first in best of show.

• Lodge 24, Cyclone Youth Club learned to make kolaches for Czech Heritage Month in October.

• Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club got an early start on Christmas. They crafted angels to be used as place cards at their annual Christmas party. Youth club members also made Santa bags.

• Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club members danced the beseda at the State Fair of Texas.

• Lodge 97, Placedo Youth Club rehearsed a skit called "Pete's a Pizza" which they presented at their district's fall meeting.

• Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club made lots of peanut brittle for their community's annual Peanut Festival.

• Lodge 160, San Angelo Youth Club honored grandparents with a Thanksgiving meal. The grandparents shared stories of the "biggest trouble they got into" as youngsters.

• Lodge 177, Academy Youth Club donated bags of candy to the Children's Miracle Network Halloween Fest. They also prepared candy for Thanksgiving baskets and delivered them to pediatric patients at Scott and White Hospital.

• Lodge 196, Houston-West Youth Club hosted a benefit garage sale for a needy family.

• District Six Youth Clubs from Lodge 4, Hallettsville; 30, Taiton; and 97, Placedo participated in the District Six Fall Festival and Barbecue Cookoff. The youth clubs sponsored booths and later on in the day enjoyed a fun social with pizza.

Congratulations to the following youth clubs who added new members: Lodge 17, New Tabor and Lodge 39, Bryan who each added one new member to their youth clubs; and Lodge 177, Academy who added two new members.

Special recognition goes to Lodge 97, Placedo who added seven new members. That is wonderful! Super job!

Twenty-five youth clubs submitted their second quarter reports covering September, October, and November. Based on these 25 clubs, an average of 277 young people attended their SPJST youth club meetings during these three months.

Twenty-five checks were issued to the youth clubs for a total of $831.

Young people are encouraged to attend their youth club meetings each month. Beginning January 1, 2001, for each member who attends a monthly meeting, the youth club receives $2 from the SPJST Home Office. That's a great way for a youth club to increase its funds!

Member§ are also reminded that they must attend a majority of youth club meetings during the youth club year (June 1, 2000 to May 31, 2001) to be eligible for Youth Achievement Day and summer camp.

SPJST Supreme Lodge to honor Augusta Spacek as 2000 Fraternalist Congratulations to Sister Augusta "Gussie" Spacek of Lodge 202, Jourdanton on her selection as the SPJST's Year 2000 Fratemalist of the Year. An outside panel of judges selected Sister Spacek from a field of 24 outstanding nominees. In addition, four other fraternalists were named Honorable Mention honorees for the Year 2000. They are: Sheldon Holub of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; Helen Kelner of Lodge 28, East Bernard; Frank Pajestka of Lodge 80, Holland; and George Pauling of Lodge 66, Waco.

Fraternalist Profile A cheerful, service-oriented fraternalist, Sister Gussie Spacek has been an active member of SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton for the past 12 years. In that time, her compassion has touched her lodge and many other parts of the community. The lessons she has learned in life have been carried over from living through the Depression years.

"I grew up on a farm in those times," said Gussie, the mother of three, in an article which appeared in Today's Catholic. "My mother helped neighbors and strangers all the time."

As a result of those early lessons, Gussie and her husband of 58 years, Ernest, have been "looking out " for their neighbors all across Atascosa County.

As a member of Lodge 202, Jourdanton, Gussie has been both an inspiration and active worker, assisting with many committees, including the Refreshment Committee, Audit Committee, Float Committee and Phone Committee. She has been instrumental in involving the lodge in various community service projects, including the ACCEPT (Atascosa County Christmas Elf Project Target) program, which assists deserving families by providing necessary food items during the holiday season.

"Gussie's a very fine lady," says District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer. " She and her husband, Ernest, are both very energetic and were both instrumental in the process which brought Lodge 161 and Lodge 202 together."

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Secretary Bettie House, echoes Director Bayer's

observations, "When Gussie laughs, it makes you feel good. She is truly a servant of the Lord and an inspiration to all. We are truly blessed to have Gussie Spacek in our midst."

Sister Spacek's fraternal effort extends well beyond her local lodge.

For years, she has been active in sister fraternals KJT and KJZT, serving in a variety of capacities, including district president. For more than 20 years, she has contributed her time to assisting the CAM (Christian Assistance Ministry) which makes clothing and nonperishable foods available to anyone in need. And, as her friends will attest, her husband, Ernest, supports her in all that she does.

That dedication includes their commitment to God and the church.

For years, Gussie taught religion classes in their parish. local Nowadays, she and Ernest assist with the St. Matthew's hospitality ministry.

"Every other Tuesday, we go to the nursing homes to pep up the residents with 'joyful noise!"' Gussie says.

She is also an active member of the Senior Citizen Club and president of the Family Counsel, a group which counsels nursing home patients and their families to make their stay more enjoyable. In 1998, Gussie and Ernest Spacek were presented with the Guardian Angel Award for their church work.

An active community booster, Gussie has been an active supporter of the area Parent Teacher's Association and is a past vice president. As an adult 4-H leader, she provided years of assistance, helping young people with their livestock show animals and teaching 4-H girls how to sew. In 1960, she was named Atascosa County 4-H Mother of the Year. In 1988, the Jourdanton Chamber of Commerce honored Gussie as Senior Citizen of the Year.

Congratulations, again, to Sister Gussie Spacek for doing her part to spread fraternalism in Lodge 202, Jourdanton and in her community.

Sister Spacek, along wit h other statewide fraternalists, will be honored on Saturday, February 24 at the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet at Lodge 24, Cyclone.

Around the State District Two DYC posts notice of February lock-in We have rescheduled our District Two lock-in. We had to cancel the lock-in November, but we are ready to stay up all night and have fun. Our lock-in is scheduled for Saturday, February 24, beginning at 7 p.m. and ending Sunday, February 25 at 7 a.m.

The lock-in will be held at Seaton Star Hall. Members may invite guests. We have plenty of fun things lined up for the night. Food and drinks will be provided.

Six Spring Meeting March 25 in Sweet Home District

Dear Readers, The spring meeting for District Six will be held Sunday, March 25, at the Sweet Home Community Center. It will be hosted by Lodge 63 Sweet Home.

Make plans to arrive a little early so that you can attend the Third Annual BBQ Cookoff Planning Committee Meeting.

The cookoff is scheduled for September 14 -15 on the grounds of the SPJST Hall in Hillje. Specific times, an agenda, and a map for the district meeting will appear in March in the Vestnik.

District officers and Lodge 65 and 91 met at Baytown Golden Corral on January 27, 2001 at 12 noon. The hosts lodges are 65 and 91. Our spring meeting will be held on March 4, 2001 at Crosby, Texas at the American Legion Hall.

The dinner will be served from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. with a social. The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. The meal will be barbecue and all the trimmings. The price for the meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children under age 12. There will be pastry so all you cooks please bring your favorite pastry.

Any pastry that is left over will be auctioned off and be divided between the youth clubs so all youths should bring some pastry to help make money for your club and will also need to work in the pastry booth to help sell the pastry.

There will be bingo so please bring prizes for bingo and door prizes. So invite your fraternal friends and your sister and brothers from your lodge and come out and visit with everyone who you don't see very often.

There will be an opening in District Five for a position on the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum Board of Directors. This is a new managing committee that was formed at the convention last year. If you are interested, come out and put your name in the hat.

Don't forget to mark your calendar for March 4, 2001 and come out and have fun.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on January meeting Hi! Our meeting was called to order

by President, Brother Johnnie Krizan, on Sunday, February 4, 2001. Tracie Dobecka and Michael Moore led us all in the Pledge of Allegiance and the reading of our motto. Our newest little newborn, Christian Ray Romero, was also present. Thanks to his family for bringing him and letting us all "gloat" over him. Wow, His first youth club meeting to attend!

All lodge officers were present, with one exception. Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, our Secretary, was unable to be with us. Flag bearer, Sister Georgia Soukup, gave her report of 30 people present at our meeting. Welcome to our guests, Irene Peterson and Kim Seith.

A moment of silence was had for all departed brothers and sisters, especially Barbara Matula and James J. Parma.

Our condolences to all the families of these two departed members.

In the absence of our secretary, Sister Peggy Dobecka read the minutes from our previous two meetings. Both the December and the January minutes were approved as read, except for minor corrections to each.

Sister Peggy also read some correspondence. There was a thank you note from Brother Howard Leshikar, President, SPJST Supreme Lodge, for donations made to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Another letter was received from the Home Office regarding the upcoming workshop and banquet at Lodge 24, Cyclone on February 24, including the sign-up sheet.

Other correspondence was the 50year pins update, which there are several from our lodge. It is customary for us to send formal invitations to these members for our Easter party and pre-

Our 50-year members for 2000 are: Sisters Dorothy E. Machac and Margaret R. Straten, along with Brothers Michael Louis Bezdek, Ernest Maier, Edward Joe Merenda, Edward H. Smajstrla and Larry Edwin Vrana.

Brother George Straten, Financial Secretary, read a letter from the Supreme Lodge regarding refunds to lodges and also congratulating us on our awards.

Brother George also reported one transfer from Lodge 66 to our lodge, Brother Robert Seith. We also had five new juvenile members, all written by Brother Jerry Kucera. We all welcome Brother Seith and all new members to our lodge and hope they will come to our meetings and activities.

Coming Events

Brother George went on to give some upcoming bookings; social on February 16, April 1 for Easter Meeting, along with SPJST, Inc. meeting and April 22, District Three Meeting at our lodge.

The trustee's report was also given and it was accepted as given.

Our Treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report, which was accepted as given.

Youth Club Report

Sister Peggy went on to deliver the youth club report, as she is also the Youth Club Leader. She reported going to the West Rest Haven on February 7. The Youth Club is also selling beanie bears for Valentine's as one of their projects for the March of Dimes. They are $5 each and are available in red or brown. Sister Peggy also mentioned that the youth will have a Valentine's party on Friday, February 16, and she invited everyone to please come to their party.

Sister Hattie Kaska, Sunshine Committee, gave her report. She reported sending get well cards to

Sisters Georgia Skerik, Stella Perez, Christine Matus and Ellen Schroeder.

She also sent "new baby congratulations" to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Romero — "It's a Boy!" and grandparent congratulations to Robert and Lydia Dobecka.

Happy 65th wedding anniversary congratulations were sent to Cyrill and Christine Svrcek.

Sister Hattie also reported sending sympathy cards to Mr. Albert Matula, Ronnie and Sherrie Brice, Ronnie and Terrie Williams, upon the death of Barbara Matula. A sympathy card was also sent to Mrs. James Parma, upon the death of her husband. Our deepest sympathy to the families of Barbara Matula and James Parma.

Our new Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Barbara Hykel, was not at our meeting, but nothing to report.

It was mentioned that our socials would continue on the first and third Fridays unless voted differently. An invitation is extended to our community for anyone wishing to come out during our socials for a bit of fellowship and see what we do at our lodge.

Members, bring a guest. Cold cuts and snacks are normally served at these socials. It was mentioned that volunteers are needed for our Easter party meeting and also for our District Three Meeting, so you may want to keep these in mind for April.

Some old business that came up was about a bus trip to be taken and for getting some more information. I believe Brother Johnnie designated Ray and Mary Marek for acquiring some information.

Those at our meeting with a February birthday were Sisters Nelda Hlavaty, Mary Neckar, Hattie Kaska and Brother Bill Skerik. A "Happy Birthday" to these folks and to all with a birthday this month.

Door prizes were then drawn with the $5 door prize winner being Sister Ruth Krizan. Congratulations! The progressive door prize was drawn as Georgia Ann Belville, not present.

Our meeting was then adjourned for all to enjoy the delicious chili/stew supper prepared by Ray and Mary Marek.

Thanks a bunch! Our next meeting will be on Sunday, March 4, 2001, at 4 p.m. (after the RVOS meeting).

The February meeting date for Lodge 8 is Monday, February 26 at 7 p.m. at the Weimar Veterans Hall. It was incorrectly published in our last new item.

The program will be presented by Dorothy (Dottie) Perales, ownerincome tax preparer of H&R Block, Schulenburg. She will present a brief program and answer any questions on income taxes and recent changes on Social Security.

Fifty-year pins will be presented to Linda Dlabaj, Venora Horak, Elizabeth Krajca, Emil Martinek, Janice McLemore, Billie Mraz, Martha Neighbors, Mary Sulc and Robert Toupal at our meeting. 32, Victoria !nvites members, friends to polka dance February 25 Lodge

SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria will have a polka dance at Inez Community Center at the Inez, Texas on February 25, 2001. Doors will open at 11 a.m.

The dance will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $7 per person.

Music will be by Vrazels' Polka Band and Bobby Jones Czech Band.

40, El Campo-Hilije reports on February meeting Lodge

The El Campo-Hillje SPJST Lodge 40 monthly meeting was held February 11, 2001 in Hillje at the lodge hall.

Vice President Sheldon Holub welcomed 33 members and eight guests.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for all the sick in the community and deceased members. Roll call was taken. President Leona Macha was absent. Trustee Kenneth Cereny was also not in attendance.

Cause for Celelbration Vice President Sheldon Holub called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. The minutes were approved as read. Vice President Holub read correspondence.

Loraine Kana gave the treasurer's report. Debbie Sczech gave the FAC report. Lodge 40 received the Platinum Award. To celebrate, we will have a catered meal at the March meeting.

Sheldon reported on Monday night bingo. Sheldon has been attending bingo in surrounding towns getting new ideas and seeing how others run their bingo games.

Marcella Kaiser won the attendance prize. February birthday celebrants in attendance were Josephine Bacak and Lee Hammons. Lee Hammons won the cake, which was shared by all.

Youth Club Report Ardis Bacak gave the report for the Youth Club. They made Valentines and were writing poems. Five members and two guests were present.

Following the meeting, the Youth Club read the poem; "Roses Are Red" and several members read poems they had written. Edmund Kana made a motion to adjourn the meeting second by Debbie Sczech. Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 3:05 p.m.

Missionx2100 Update At this time, Vice President Sheldon Holub introduced Lanita Anglin, Secretary-Treasurer from the Home Office. She spoke to the members and guests about the new 2100 Program for 2001 to recruit new members. She also reviewed the guidelines for the Platinum Award for 2001.

49, Rowena tarok tournament set for March 31 Lodge

Lodge 49, Rowena will hold the 12th annual tarok tournament on Saturday, March 31, 2001. Social and practice session will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 30. On Saturday, March 31, tarok tournament registration will begin at 8 a.m.; play will be begin at 9 a.m.

Lodge 80, Holland is holding a garage sale on Saturday, March 24, 2001 from 8 to 5 p.m. Set up will be on Friday, March 23 from 1 to 5 p.m.

80, Holland reports on February meeting Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, President Harold Rohde called the meeting of Lodge 80 to order on February 3, 2001 at 4 p.m. The membership stood for the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for departed members. All officers were present.

Brother Glen Latham, Secretary, read the minutes of the January meeting. They were approved as read. He also gave a report of all committees and they were fine. He then read a letter from the Home Office that included a check which was a bonus for policies that had been written. Also read was a notice of the Awards Banquet to be held at Cyclone on February 24, 2001 at 1:30 pm. Anyone planning to go

should contact Brother Glen by February 8, 2001. Two new members were voted in by the membership.

Under new business, Brother Rohde asked the memberships' thoughts for a garage sale. Gloria Sala moved to have the garage sale on March 24, 2001, seconded by Florine Rohde.

Motion carried. Tables will be $10.

Gloria will be in charge of the booths and garage sale.

Picnic Set for May 20 President Rohde stated the annual Lodge 80 picnic will be May 20, 2001.

Lodge 88, Houston hosts successful anniversary celebration

91, Crosby invites members to apply for scholarship

We have had some sad days at our lodge, for we have lost three members. William (Bill) Hughes was very active—always willing to help. His nice and friendly personality endeared him to many friends; just to meet up with him made a person feel good. Adella, his dear wife of 55 years, was like that also, and was always eager to help. He will be missed by us all.

Mike Trefell was also a dear friend who made everybody happy. When he was well, he helped at the lodge and his wife, Kathy, who was a great president of the Birthday Club for several years. I hear that Kathy has gone to live at Atlanta, Georgia. We will be missing both of them.

William Plasek, who was 91, was a member of Lodge 88 for over 50 years. Oscar and I used to play Bridge with him and Gladys Ernestine, his wife for 65 years. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to all these families Our Anniversary Celebration turned out nicely with a good dinner.

President Helen Hegwood was busy and also directed the Choral Club when it joined our Czech Concert Orchestra of which Jim Rohde is president. Everyone enjoyed the music and singing! At 5 p.m., a dance followed the bingo and the guests enjoyed the music of the Sound Connection (John Tupa).

Guests enjoyed the homemade ice cream the youth served in the annex building.

John and Susan Broz, son and daughter in-law of Clara and Johnny Broz, went to Honolulu where they enjoyed two weeks with his brother, Jay. While there, they went to a big dance and John was elected the "Prince of the Ball"! Isn't that great!

Get well wishes go to Mary Kosut who had a heart attack. You can imagine how happy John was that she started getting better right away! We also are wishing Bessie Dewer a rapid recovery from a stroke.

It was so good to see members, Marian Mikes and daughter, Laurie Ballard, who are now living in Sealy.

I remember Laurie when she escorted an SPJST officer at one of our big events we had when I was president.

It was nice of Wilbertha Lacina and friend, John Skobla for saving a place for Viola and me at the dinner at the lodge. I surely enjoyed talking with two friends I had not seen in a long time: Ethel Reed and Erwin Wind.

Entertainment Chairman Betty Theiss announces the following dances for March:

Lodge 91, Crosby is now accepting applications for a 2001 student scholarship in the amount of $500.00. An application can be obtained by calling Chester Stasney at (281) 843-2882.

The application must be completed and returned by February 28.

To qualify, a student must be a member of Lodge 91 and have definite plans to enter college in the fall of the year 2001.

Durhams Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary On Saturday, February 3, 2001 a very large number of family and friends gathered at Lodge 92 to honor Dick and Martha Durham for their 50th wedding anniversary. It was a great party! Martha and her family members have been active in lodge activities since her grandparents were part of the group that formed Lodge 92 in 1910. Martha is now on the SPJST Insurance Committee and has done a great job in increasing our membership and insurance sales. Dick and Martha, congratulations to you, and may you have many more anniversaries in good health.

Special birthdays in February are Roy Alholm, Verne Borde, Henrietta Boris, Gertrude Botik, Pauline Brownlee, Jospehine Chilson, Clara Cohen, Oletha Cook, Norma Harwell, Frances Herzog, Frank Karlicek, JoellaKubala, John Lackey, Don Laymance, Herman Mocek, Theo Ogden, Emily Roe, Nina Shepelwich, Mary Walker and Michael Woolsey.

Expression of Sympathy Family and friends bid their final farewell to three fraternal friends recently, namely: Lee Roy Bates, Ella Mae Faraizl and Mary Renfro (Lodge 154). Lee Roy was well known for sharing his musical talent

with a lot of folks and most especially with those in nursing homes. Ella Mae transferred to Lodge 92 several years ago. When she was still able, she participated in the both the Dallas and Fort Worth Ladies Circles. She also was a great supporter of our Lodge 92's Czech Heritage Day. We have many fond memories of visiting with Mary at Lodge 154, at District Three meetings, at the SPJST conventions, and Czech Day and at the State Fair.

They were all great fraternalists and they will be greatly missed.

Thanks to Inez Krivanek and Cookie Lackey for the kind words while they attended the 50th wedding anniversary celebration for Dick and Martha Durham.

It was also good to see Clara Cohen and Dona Hubenak at the same party.

Meeting Highlights Sunshine Committee Chairperson Sandra Hubenak reported sending a "thinking of you" card to Barbara O'Donelly and a get well card to Rudy Koci. Rudy, we hope everything is going well and we will look forward to seeing you at lodge activities soon.

The Youth Club was very elated over the success of the dance with Brave Combo. Many new faces showed up and included young families. Gayle Fuller and Terri Perez took the youth to a local nursing home to spread Valentine good cheer to the residents. Also, thanks went to Jerry May and Gordon Hubenak for helping the Youth Club with the monetary sponsorship of the dance with Brave Combo.

Jamie Martin was approved as a new sales representative pending concurrence of the Supreme Lodge.

The Friday night Ballroom Dances are continuing with the Starlite Ballroom partnership. They will need our continued support to help make this a success for Lodge 92. If you haven't been to a ballroom dance you are missing dancing to some great bands.

107, Floresville reports on January meeting Lodge

Lodge 107 held its monthly meeting on January 15, 2001 at 3 p.m. The meeting was called to order by President Pruski. Member Thomas Novak led the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence for our recently departed members, Joe Pavliska and Norman Sefcik, was observed.

Roll call of officers found Treasurer Diane Korus absent.

Sick call—Loreen Merecka, in hospital; and August Merecka, in nursing home.

The minutes of the January 14, 2001 meeting were read and approved.

Correspondence Correspondence included a letter from Supreme President Lesikar to Lodge President Pruski stating that we have 22 new members and are at the Silver Step Award. The check will be presented at the February 24, 2001 Awards Banquet.

Youth Leader Report Youth Leader Pruski reported there were 12 members present, four adults and one guest. She relayed that the Mission 2100 is a little different for the youth. Each youth who signs up a new member will have his name put in for a drawing to Disney World.

Youth Leader Pruski went over the new rule book changes: a) State YAD is changed from two days to one day b) New category added—Photography c) Food category—Cake is the only food for this year's YAD. The cakes must be displayed on styrofoam plate d) Science/Education size limit-36 inches wide by 48 inches high e) Group Talent—now can have 15 members (up from 10) f) Youth Officers will be elected in May and take office in June. Due to this change, there will be no Youth Officers Workshop this year g) Youth Club now gets $2 for each member attending the meetings (up from $1) h) Parade car gets $25 and float gets $100 New rule books will be available at Youth Leaders Workshop March 9-11, 2001. There is discussion of having two statewide camps (one for juniors, 6 to 11 and one for seniors, 12 to high school senior). This is in addition to the district camps.

8ATESTNIK—Wednesday, February 21, 2001 March meeting was changed from March 11, 2001 to March 18. This was done due to the Youth Leaders Workshop.

FAC Report FAC Sears relayed that she had received nothing from State as of this date. She reported on the February 24, 2001—Awards Banquet; March 3, 2001—State Straight Domino Tournament; March 17—State 42 Domino Tournament; April 8— Lodge 107 Member Awards Banquet.

FAC Sears also stated that she had brought dominoes for Chicken Foot after the meeting for anyone interested.

Insurance—District Seven Director Bayer reported three new policies sold this month. We have lots of leads and if all the leads sign up, we will double our quota.

Financial Secretary Report—one new member, Darla Jaimes.

Old Business • Roof—President Pruski is talking to a guy about applying rubber goop onto the roof • Tree—checking with Mr. Gupkin on replacing the dead tree. As soon as the tree is replaced, new water lines will be run all around the hall.

• April 8, 2001, the New Members Awards Banquet—District Seven Director Bayer has a list of new members and the 50- and 75-year members. 75-year member, Libbey Bayer; 50- year members, Frances Hosek, Rose Marie Malcher, Gary Lee Pelech and Patricia Jean Valcher.

The Banquet will be held on April 8.

The meal will be brisket and sausage with green beans, barbecue potatoes and cole slaw with coffee or ice tea.

The meal will be served at 1 p.m.

The Youth Club is in charge of decorations and serving the dessert.

The treasurer's report was read and accepted.

New Business • Memorial Fund for Joe Pavliska has received several donations.

• Repair of porch door—motion by Bob Bayer to purchase paneling (4x8 sheets, 5/8 inch thick) for porch door and wall and plywood and 2x4s to finish shelving in the store room; seconded by Youth Leader Pruski.

Motion carried.

Hall Manager Report Hall Manager Bertrand reported eight new chairs have been donated by the New Year's Eve Party members. There are no hall rentals in February, one in March.

The Lodge Officer Workshop will be held at Cyclone on February 24, 2001. Registration is at 1 p.m. Two cars are allowed—one for officers and one for sales reps. New and old officers are eligible to attend as well as sales reps. Also the spouses of all eligible. The workshop is to introduce the new Mission 2100 membership drive. The Banquet is to honor the sales reps.

The next meeting will be March 18, 2001 at 3 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 4:20 p.m.

139, Danbury encourages grads to apply for lodge scholarship Lodge

Danbury Lodge 139 invites all of the 2001 graduating senior members to send in their applications for the $500 scholarship which is offered each year.

The applicant must be a member of the SPJST since the end of his/her freshman year and must be a member of Lodge 139. The applicant must include a letter from the school counselor stating his/her grade point average and ranking in in the class.

Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy report of February meeting The February meeting of Lodge 200 was held on February 7. After taking care of routine business, Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride enthusiastically presented the Mission 2100 Incentive Program.

Members indicated interest in the many opportunities and incentives provided by this really great program approved by our Supreme Lodge.

Vice President McBride fully explained the need for the SPJST to enroll new members to offset membership losses due to death and other reasons.

Mayfest Sponsorship There was discussion about lodge sponsorship of the upcoming community Mayfest which will be held the second weekend in Maya New members accepted were Trenis Jordan, Matthew Ferguson and Holly Ferguson.

The annual election of lodge officers was held. Lodge 202, Jourdanton reports on February meeting Dear Readers, Jourdanton Lodge 202 met Sunday, February 4 at 3 p.m. at Wells Fargo Bank in Pleasanton with twenty members and one guest present.

President Jeff Barta presided.

Phillip Barta led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Bettie House read the minutes which were approved as

District Seven Director Bob Bayer gave the Power Point presentation on Mission 2100. Lodge 202's quota for the year is 30 new certificates.

SPJST Lodge 202 Jourdanton officers and membership express sympathy to the family of PAULINE FOJTIK HOFFMAN, 84, a longtime resident of Pleasanton who passed away January 27, 2001.

She was born June 9, 1916 in Lavaca County.

A son, Rudy Fojtik and wife, Thelma of Pleasanton and a sister, Millie Gautreaux of Port Lavaca, survive her.

Funeral services were held January 29, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Hurley Funeral Home in Pleasanton with Earl Willis, the Senior Department Pastor of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed in Pleasanton City Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Hurley Funeral Home, Pleasanton.

On behalf of Lodge 54, West officers and members, the Resolution Committee wishes to express our condolences to the entire family and friends of our departed lodge brother, JOSEPH F. HOLASEK, 102, former West mayor and civic leader, who passed away Saturday afternoon, December 23, 2000 at Hillcrest Medical Center in West.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 27 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel with Steve Kazanas officiating. Masonic Graveside Rites and Military Joseph Holasek Graveside Rites followed at Waco Memorial Park, conducted by the West Masonic Lodge 475 and V.F.W. Post 4819 of West.

Mr. Holasek was born October 30, 1898 in Moravia, Austria-Hungary, and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 12. He served in the United States Army during World War I, serving in five major battles, where he was seriously wounded and gassed. In 1998, he was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French Government.

He married Mayme Vavra in 1922 in Omaha, Nebraska. She preceded him in death in January of 1964. He then married Marie Rokusek Wachal on May 6, 1967 in West. She also preceded him in death on August 31, 1994. He was co-owner of the Cechoslovak Publishing Co. in West for 60 years, being named the Texas Newspaper Man-of-The-Year in 1955.

Brother Holasek was the publisher of the SPJST Vestnik from 1933 to 1974 and also published the Hospadar for many years.

He served as Mayor of West for 16 years, the first vice president of the West Fair and Rodeo Association, the first president of the West Longhorn Club, served on the original board of directors of the Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo Association, served on the West I.S.D. Board of Trustees for several years, helped organize and finance the Holasek Addition in northern West and the building of West Rest Haven.

As mayor, he helped secure federal grants to build West Community Hospital. Mr. Holasek was a Mason and Shriner. He was a member of the American Legion Post 478, V.F.W. Post 4819 and the Military Orcter of the Purple Heart. He was a member of the SPJST Lodge 54, West.

Brother Holasek joined the SPJST on November 11, 1925. He was the president of former Lodge 36, West for several years before the lodge merged with Lodge 54, West in December 1999. Brother Holasek was recognized at the 1988 SPJST Convention as the oldest and having served as delegate to the most conventions. In June 2000, Brother Holasek was honored at Lodge 54 for being a

Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, WILLIAM P. "SONNY" SUMBERA, of Holland who passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2001 in a Temple nursing home at the age of 86.

Brother Sumbera was born in Holland to John and Annie Sumbera.

He was reared and educated in Holland. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 80, the Holland Fire Department and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 615 AF&AM. During World War II, he was employed in airplane radio maintenance at the Air Force Base in Brady. He was self-employed in radio and television sales and service in the Holland-Bartlett area for most of his life.

Survivors include two brothers, Johnnie Sumbera and Joe Sumbera, both of Holland; three sisters, Alice Lee of Temple, Mary Parkhill of Holland and Celestine Haschke of Cleburne.

Visitation was from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 8 at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett. Services were at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 9 in Holland Cemetery.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and his memory remain with us forever.

75-year SPJST member. Mr. Holasek was a member of the American Sokol Gymnastics Association and a West Bank and Trust director for many years. He was also a member of the West Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Holasek is also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; four sisters; daughter, Doris Henderson, who died August 17, 1995; grandson, Joseph William Henderson in 1994; and two nephews, Anton Holasek and Steve Vanek Stephens.

He is survived by one son, Raymond Holasek and his wife, Wencie of West; son in-law, Dr. G.W. Henderson of Austin; stepson, Dr. Robert Wachal of Iowa City, Iowa; three grandchildren, Joseph Carroll Holasek and Karla Rae Holasek, both of San Diego, California and Barbara H. O'Rear of Austin; four greatgrandchildren, William Henderson Williams, Joey Lynn Moore, Halea Rae Holasek and Katy O'Rear; nieces, Carrie Veselka, Betty Jurica, Rose Stulir, Jarmilla Kowalcyk, Ruzina Kuchar and Vera Krejei; and nephews, Nick Miller and Dr. Jiri Mukulcak.

Pallbearers were Freddy Gerik, Terry Sefcik, John Hurtik, Ernest Bezdek, Robert Mynarcik and Edward Archer.

Honorary pallbearers were Wendel Montgomery, Adolph Havel, Al Marchak, George X. Smajstrla, Raymond Nemecek, Grady Langford, Jake Tucker, West V.F.W. Post 4819 and West Volunteer Fire Department.

Mrs. Jansky was born September 27, 1907 near Rose and had lived in Dallas for seven and a half years where she married Emil Jansky in 1936 and then they moved back to West. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption and the Altar Rosary Society, KJZT Society 11, SPJST Lodge 54 since January

1945 and was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America Sacred Heart Court 829.

Mrs. Jansky was employed as a cook at West High School for 14 years and was cafeteria manager for a number of years. She cooked for numerous weddings and funeral dinners and was also a cook for West Kiwanis Club for some 17 years. She was also a substitute at the West Elementary cafeteria.

She was a loving and caring person who cared for the elderly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil Jansky, who died February 8, 1983; and son, Daniel (BoBo) Jansky, who died in 1996.

Survivors include her brother, Joe Opersall of Houston; daughter in-law, Pat Jansky of Richardson; and several nieces and nephews, including Helen Rauschuber of West.

Active pallbearers were Anton Lenart, Jr., George Jansky, Edmund Rauschuber, Donald Jansky, Joe Spaniel and Jerome Jansky.

Jerome W. "Jerry" Flint, 94, of Blessing, Texas, died Thursday, January 25, 2001.

He was born September 3, 1906 in Summers County, West Virginia to the late Thomas Wayne and Ocie Ola Taylor Flint. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving for 19 years, including in World War II. He was a life member and past commander of Blessing Cecil Lee American Legion Post 649 and a member of Midfield Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Kopecky Flint; daughter, Phyllis Anne Beverage of Boca Raton, Florida; sisters, Christine Flint and Geneva Scott, both of Covington, Virginia; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were at 3 p.m., Sunday, January 28 in Bay City, Texas with the Reverend David Zimmer officiating.

Burial was at Hawley Cemetery in Blessing, Texas.

She is survived by son, Ronald Braikovich and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Laurel and Ronald Braikovich; step-grandchildren, Kathy and Becky Gibson; sisters, Tillie Helmcamp and Viola Cox; several nieces and nephews and other family members.

Rosary was at 7 p.m., Thursday, January 11 at Earthman Resthaven Chapel. Funeral, mass was at 10 a.m.

Friday, January 12, 2001 at St. Edwards Catholic Church, 2601 Spring Stuebner. Interment followed at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery.

Thelma Faye Milberger Reynolds, 72, of Lago Vista and formerly of Victoria, Texas, died Wednesday, January 31, 2001. She was born April 24, 1928 in Edna to the late Fort F. and

Ruth Partridge Baker. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Victory Cathedral.

Survivors include husband, Jim Reynolds; daughters, Royce Koury of Las Vegas, Nevada, D'Ette Friedrichs of Crosby, Becky Fly of Goliad; sons, Michael Milberger of San Clemente, California, Warren Milberger and Robby Milberger of Victoria, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by husband, Roy "Coke" Milberger; sister, Bonnie Baker; and brothers, Jack Baker, Jim Baker and Frank Fort Baker, Jr. A rosary was recited at 7 p.m., Sunday at Rosewood Funeral Home Chapel. A Catholic Daughters . Honor Guard presided. She was 'a member of SPJST Lodge 32, Victoria for 30 years.

Services were held Monday, February 5, 2001 at Our Lady of Victory Cathedral with the Reverend Michael O'Shaughnessy officiating.

Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery Rosewood Funeral Chapels of Victoria.

All youth leaders, assistants and their spouses/guests are invited to the workshop. It will be a nice weekend getaway filled with lots of youth club help and fun. I am planning a workshop filled with information to help you in your youth club. And I am planning some fun activities, too. The workshop begins Friday evening at 7 p.m. with registration, games, snacks and fun. Saturday's workshop begins after breakfast at 9 a.m. If you can't get away for the entire weekend, please try to be there on Saturday. Get ready for Quarterly Reports It's Due March 15!

It's almost quarterly report time again. Mark the date—March 15.

That's when the third quarter report for December, January, and February is due. This is a big one! At the 2000 SPJST Convention, the delegates voted to increase the quarterly report amount to $2 per youth club member who attends the meetings. So if a youth club had an attendance of 20 members at each youth meeting in December, January, and February, I will mail your youth club a check for $120 in March. But, in order to receive any funds, you must send in your quarterly report by March 15. So please remember that your quarterly report is due March 15!

100 Pennies Drive ends March 31 Thanks to everyone who has sent in donations to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. It is very much appreciated. The drive continues through March 31. Youth club members who donate $2 or more receive 20 merit points, and youth club members who donate $5 or more also receive a certificate. These scholarships really make a difference to our collegebound SPJST members.

Mission 2100!

As you have probably heard, Mission 2100 is in full force this year.

This mission is to recruit 2100 new SPJST members and we need your help. Not only will you get to see your friends at all SPJST functions, there are incentives for you having your friends join the SPJST. I will visit your youth club within the next several months to explain your rewards.

Lock-in on Saturday, February 24 Here's all you have to do. Invite a friend of friends to the lock-in on Saturday, February 24 at Seaton Star Hall. Have a parent or grandparent come along and we'll explain the youth program along with the insurance benefits in becoming a member.

We have a new insurance plan in force called the SPJST Youth Achiever.

Your friends, ages newborn to 15 years, can receive $10,000 worth of life insurance for only $60 per year.

Other options are also available. A parent or grandparent must sign the youth up for the insurance.

We sign your friend up for the insurance and if they attend the March, April and May meetings, they are eligible for YAD. They can also attend camp for a pro-rated amount.

Now they'll be in for a great fun-filled year. Not only are your friends having fun, they also get to meet your SPJST friends. Your youth club could win a trip to an amusement park and your family may win a trip to Disney World.

Painted churches documentary to air February 24

The first showing of the one-hour PBS documentary, entitled, "The Painted Churches of Texas: Echoes of the Homeland" begins at 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 24 on KLRU in Austin. Afterward, it will be put into the PBS distribution network across Texas and the United States. The documentary was sponsored by the Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc., LaGrange also contributed a number of vintage photographs from their archives for what promises to be a most enlightening documentary and testament to the strength of Texas' early Czech settlers.

A translation of a book depicting early life in the Czech lands entitled Cermna Portraits is now available. The book portrays legends, fables, fairytales, stories and historical events of the people in the east Bohemian town of Cermna and its surrounding villages.

Residents of Cermna were the first large group to immigrated to Texas in 1852. Their journey is a tale of hardship and heartache. Only about onehalf of the group survived the journey. The 38 survivors finally crossed the swollen Brazos River in March of that year to make their homes in and around Cat Springs, Texas. The poor economic conditions of the region caused over one-half the population of Cermna to choose emigration.

Most came to the U. S. A. The book contains surnames such as Adamec, Andrle, Barta, Bednar, Betlach, Dusek, Faltejsek, Filip, Jansa, Lesikar, Marek, Merta, Motycka, Novak, Pechacek, Silar, Vacek, Vavra and many more names common to Texans of Czech ancestry.

Many of the stories of the villagers concern the emigration of families. It was originally published in 1995 in the Czech language by the community of Cermna. The contents are a compilation of stories provided by local historians, chroniclers and ethnographers. An index and footnotes were added by the translator and editor, Marvin Marek of Missouri

The footnotes are based on extensive research conducted by Marek during extended visits to his ancestral villages.
