John was previously associated with Woodmen John C. Wells of the World and Royal Neighbors, sister fraternal benefit societies. He and his wife, Carol, have two daughters, Jennifer and Jacqueline.

1. Transcript Request school/college to send current official transcript to SPJST Scholarship Department. The transcript must have a grade point average on a 4.00 scale. GED will be accepted.

2. SAT/ACT Scores A student who does not have college hours at the time of application must submit an official verification of SAT or ACT scores. These scores should be submitted with your current official transcript. Only those students applying for SPJST Technical Scholarships/Grants have the option of submitting DAT, TASP or Pre-TASP scores. Due February 1.

3. Personal Statement Send with application your personal statement that includes why you wish to go to college, which college you plan/will attend and your planned major. Explain how the scholarship/ grant will help you in no more than 300 words. Statements must be typed or neatly written on 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch sheets of paper.

4. References and Recommendations Send with application no more than three written references or recommendations from various sources (clergy, high school officials, employers, professionals, etc.) References should include a judgement of applicant's potential. Due February I. 5. Photo/Biography Send with application two walletsized photographs of yourself. Attach the photos using tape on the back of the photos to an 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch piece of paper. Please note that due to scholarship/grant deadlines, any application received after February 1 cannot be processed.

Academy, Taylor and Houston teams take top places in volleyball tourney The State Volleyball Tournament was held on Saturday, November 18, 2000 at Rogers, Texas. The day went well, but the weather was bad. Also, we had one minor accident, which left one of the Lodge 24 youth club members with a broken arm. He is doing fine.

This year, teams played round robin again. We had a total of seven teams that participated.

I would like to send a special thank you to Rogers High School for letting us use their gymnasiums for the tournament. Having two gyms available makes all of the difference in the world. Also, I would like to thank from the President's Department Donna Locke, Tammy Baker, State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny, Supreme Lodge President and Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and his wife, Frances, for helping out at the tournament. If it was not for them, the tournament would not have been possible.

Concerned member encourages seniors to express views I, along with many other elderly patrons, stood in line for three hours to get a flu shot on October 26 at an area supermarket. I was not there because of any financial consideration, but because my doctor did not believe he would be able to get the vaccine at all.

So there we all were, mostly elderly, standing in line, at great discomfort and some with obvious health risks.

One gentlemen nearly passed out.

There were no chairs provided. It was a terrible experience for me and for those in poor health, it was horrendous. Some of these people could hardly stand up.

As we stood in line, many related that they were also there because their doctors could not get the vaccine, I shudder to think if I will be compelled to do this again. other places in order to get shots which were in the past administered by doctors. Medicare paid for most of the people waiting, so why would they be forced to stand in line for three hours. Doctor offices do provide chairs.

In our twilight years, some of us cannot choose our doctors and our health decisions are being made by non-medical persons. Those who are trying to stay healthy by getting shots are herded around like cows being run through a dipping vat.

My conclusion is that there is big money involved and nobody cares what hardships are imposed on the elderly or the critically ill. I do not believe this is just a Texas problem, but concerns every American.

I would encourage every concerned member to share similar concerns that they may have with their elected officials. Working together, we will be heard.

On Sunday, January 6, 2001, Lodge 40 members met for their annual cleanup day at the lodge hall. We had a total of 20 members working together cleaning, repairing, mowing, painting and getting ready for the new year. We started at '9 a.m. and concluded at 3 p.m. with an officer and trustee meeting. We enjoyed a homecooked chicken noodle soup dinner prepared by the lodge members. We hope to see a lot more members next year. They will hear how much fun we had working together.

President Vincent Newman read a thank you letter from the S.P.J.S.T. nursing home. We had delivered a case of fruit cocktail to the residents for Christmas.

Under other business, Brother Louis Hanus presented President Vincent Newman with a book about SPJST heritage. This gift was truly appreciated.

President Vincent Newman wanted me to express his thanks.

It was also nice to have Adolph and Delores Macha attend this meeting. I was told that Cheryl Norman and her beautiful daughter, Lindsey, came also.

We would also like to express our welcome to Mrs. Weatherall and other visitors who were there. I'm sorry if I'm leaving someone out, but it's hard since I wasn't there.

Since this was our Christmas meeting, we gave away ten money prizes.

Winners were Larry Stamman, Edna Woytek, Kimberly Stamman, Benita Walzel, Eddie Pieper, Donnie Matcek, Darlene Blinka, Geraldine Anderson, Gilbert Walzel and Ryan Pieper.

There were also presents given to everyone by donation of members.

After the meeting and all door prizes were given, Willie Mae Kuykendall led everyone in singing Christmas carols.

During the song, "Jingle Bells," there was a knock at the door. Who should be on the other side of that door, but Santa Claus! Everyone was overjoyed that he took time out of his busy schedule to come visit us. Thank you, Santa.

There were fruit bags for each family member to take home. I heard it was a lot of fun.

Our next meeting will be on January 21, 2001. It was decided to have potluck. Members, please bring a meat, side dish and dessert. See you at the next meeting!

79, Corpus Christi reports on December meeting Lodge

On Sunday, December 17, the annual meeting was called to order by President Jerry Sijansky with all the officers present. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Brother John Hasek.

The December birthdays were Sister Carrie Veselka, December 19 and Sister Milly Elzner, December 17. Everyone wished them a happy birthday and also best wislles for the 53rd wedding anniversary on December 13 of Joe and Lera Nemecek.

The minutes of the October and November meetings were read by Secretary Helen Pavelka. Both were accepted as read. She also read the correspondence, including the new member approved into membership, JoAnn Pavelka.

The financial report was given for October and November by Treasurer Milly Elzner and both were accepted.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner reported on the activities for the past year that lodge members had participated. It had been a busy year.

American Legion Assistance The monthly donation of $50 was increased to $100 for December and was donated to American Legion Post 364 to help with the expenses after the loss of their barbecue building by fire.

They used to meet at the hall before the post built their own place. Also

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner After the election, President Jerry Sijansky said he hopes on getting a youth club started. He talked about the new Youth Achiever plan of insurance which should help on gaining members.

The next meeting is on Sunday, January 21, 2001. Everyone enjoyed the svacina after the meeting with all the good food including a birthday cake for Milly Elzner which was made by Jerry and Jill Sijansky. It was delicious!

Well, I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! I was unable to attend our December 17 meeting, so my mother in-law filled in for me. A meal of ham and sausage was served for this Christmas meeting. I would like to thank Darlene Blinka, Sarah Stewart and Winifred Susan for baking the hams and also thanks to Darlene Blinka for the sausage. Thanks also goes out to Darlene Blinka and the kitchen committee for getting everything ready. I heard that I missed some wonderful side dishes and desserts.

Thanks to the members for bringing all of the food.

At 1 p.m. with the beginning of the Pledge of Allegiance, President Vincent Newman opened the meeting. All officers answered the roll call except Edwin Susan and Jeanette Newman. There was a moment of silence for departed member Clarence Eversole. We were also saddened to hear of the death of George Abschneider's granddaughter, who was killed in a motorcycle accident. May God be with you in your time of sorrow.

Added to our sick list are Edwin Susan, Elsie Brdecka and Annie Tielke.

We wish you all a speedy recovery.

Dear Members, Remember January 21 at 3 p.m., we have our special meeting to get ideas from young and older members for the coming years. Your lodge wants you to be a part of it. Dear Members: Alert!

Important things are happening at Lodge 84, Dallas! You're not just an insurance member, you never were! By purchasing SPJST insurance, you became a fraternal member of a society over 100 years old. One of the prices featured in your insurance package is your obligation to the fraternal side of your membership. This is the aspect that helps us to retain a fraternal non-profit standard. We at Lodge 84, Dallas don't want you to collect at the time of your death, that would not be fair to either of us. We need you now. Why? You became a part of a family of people who share the same concerns and wishes you do. We make time. Time. The biggest word of this century.

Time, for our elders was coming in from the fields, leaving their offices, declining dinner parties and still shuffling kids to sports, scouts, dance, choir and other outside activities, once a month to include the lodge.

January 21 Meeting On January 21 in the year 2001, we expect the members of Lodge 84, Dallas, to attend one of the most important meetings in the life of this lodge as well as yours. We will have a free meal, babysitting and entertainment by the teen youth for your children, and an open forum with microphones so all can be heard as to what your needs are. We recognize that the needs of youth, middle age and seniors can be very different and we intend to address these issues.

Don't cop out on this very important meeting. „ We have a great building to hold all sorts of activities. We have officers who care about you, and most of all, we are a fraternal family who holds your welfare and comments in deep respect.

You are members of an aging lodge in many ways, but even our recent history is incredible. At Youth Achievement Day in Temple, the awards for outstanding performance were once again unmatched. At the State Fair of Texas, our members performed on several days

Wednesday, January 17, 2001—VESTNIK/7 culminating with our traditional Czech Heritage Day on October on October 8 with 32 adult and teen Beseda dancers and 16 little dancers from age two to eight years old. These were the only dancers or singers to perform from any single organization in Dallas, the SPJST Lodge 84. What a tribute.

For any of you who are skeptical of the January meeting, be assured your voice will not only be heard, but listened to and you will have a chance to vote on what you want from your local lodge.

Don't disappoint yourself or your lodge.

151, Wharton members enjoy Crhistmas party, pay tribute to past District Six Director Lodge

Lodge 151, Wharton held its meeting and Christmas Party, Sunday, June 3, 2000 at Heinz's Bar-B-Que meeting room. Members and guests enjoyed a catered dinner consisting of turkey and dressing, ham and all the trimmings.

The members brought many delicious desserts. Thank you, ladies.

President Bucek presided over the meeting. A moment of silent prayer was held for the deceased and ill members of the society. Several topics of information were discussed.

Lodge Pays Tribute A motion passed to give the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum a check for $100 in honor of outgoing District Six Director Matt Vanek. President Bucek presented the check to Glenn Kaminsky and a plaque of appreciation will be given at a later dater Matt and Henrietta were unable to be with us.

We missed you both.

Makayla Staff, daughter of Audrey Hensley and granddaughter of Larry and Joyce Hensley, was recognized at the youngest member present. She received a gift from the lodge.

If you would like to join in the fun on the trip to Moody Gardens, the plans I have received from Mr. Kaminsky are to leave East Bernard at approximately 8 a.m. on a charted bus and return at approximately 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2001. The cost per person is approximately $50 includes bus fare, entrance fees for several sightseeing tours and food. This is a fraternal act for the members of the lodge so plan to attend. It sounds like fun; some members have been to the Moody Gardens and plan to go again. This would be a good way to meet with fellow members of both lodges. 180, Burleson reports on December meeting Lodge

Lodge 180 held its regular meeting on December 6, 2000. All lodge minutes, reports and business were taken care of at that time. The highlights of the meeting were a discussion on advertising in Latino newspapers and our new sales representative for Lodge 180 is Lawrence Yocum. Welcome to Lodge 180, Mr. Yocum. We look forward to working with you.

Afterwards, members had a delicious Christmas dinner of chili and various side dishes and a gift exchange.

On our get well list, we wish a speedy recovery to Ernest Deuser and Ella Hilcher who have been ill and Bill Hilcher who is recovering from recent surgery.

204, Stephenville members enjoys Christmas party Lodge

The members of Lodge 204 met on December 19 at the Koffee Kup Restaurant for its annual Christmas party. There were 14 members, State Fraternal .Activities Coordinator John Wells and two guests, George and Rose Krupala, who joined us for a very good meal and a joyful evening of fellowship. We hope the Krupalas will join us in the future for our meetings. The members could use some good advice and help in getting things going at Lodge 204.

We wish to thank State FAC John Wells for being there and bringing the door prizes and keeping things going for the evening and also Lynn Allen, owner of the Koffee Kup Restaurant, for a good meal and providing a nice room for the meeting maybe we could meet there more in the future.

Even if things have been a little slow this last year, we are looking forward to attending the awards banquet in February next year and doing better and hope to grow bigger and better in the future.

The Way We Were We are now in the 21st century and

looking into the future, wondering what will happen next. The 20th century started out in the covered wagon and horseback or walking days. Things were a lot slower then and people seemed to have more time to do things than they do today.

I have been reading some old newspapers and in 1920s some of the best jobs in Texas were in the oil fields where you could earn $2 a day — much more than you could get at any other place -- even if you could get a job.

The cost of living; however, was fairly inexpensive. You could buy a Model-T Ford for $159 and scare all of the horses along the road when you were traveling.

Later, when it rained, you might have to depend on those same horses to pull you out of the mud as the roads were little more than country trails. I can remember my uncle coming to get us in his Model-T and traveling to Grandma's house. Sometimes we would have to pull off our shoes and socks and help shove the car through the mud to get there.

Things have come a long way since then. We are now in the space age and flying around in space like Buck Rogers did in the comic strip back in the 1930s, which most everyone thought was was impossible. We also have radio, television, computers, electric lights, airplanes, a lot of things made of plastic and words in the dictionary that were not even words in the 1930s.

You Can Tell it's Winter ...

Once again, we had snowfall that covered the ground. It was a little late for Christmas, but it was beautiful for a while. One had to get out quick to see it because it all melted the next day. I am glad that we did not have the ice storm that some other people had that caused their electricity to be out for about a week.

I had been busy feeding some wild ducks that were staying on my pond for about a month, but some of them seemed to have gone on to the south since the snow because I don't have as many as I did before the snow.

This is about enough for now. Lodge 204 members, remember that our meetings are on the third Tuesday of the month and that we will meet at the Senior Citizens Center or at the Koffee Kup. Christi Circle of Women report on January meeting Corpus

Twenty-seven regular members, two honorary members and nine guests attended our January 4, 2001 meeting; Our guests were Bud Duplessis, Dorothy Berner, Lera and Joe Nemecek, Jeanette Malsbury, Louise Thompson, Savannah White, Duane McAlister and Teran Dziadek. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing, "My Country 'Tis of Thee," a

moment of silence was observed in memory of Rose Huff and also in memory of Joe Holasek, uncle of our president, Kathy Marek.

Rose Huff, our oldest member, died peacefully in her sleep at the home of her son and daughter in-law, Victor and Jean Huff on December 30, 2000.

Victor brought his mother home from Heartland Nursing Home only a couple of days previously. Rose was a 75year member of Sokol and 72-year member of SPJST. She attended her last Krouxek meeting in July. There are two snapshots of Rose on the bulletin board at Sokol—one taken after receiving her 75-year pin with Sokol President Wilbert Hermis, his wife, Daisy, and City Councilman, Henry Garret and the other taken in the early 1950s serving food at a Sokol picnic along with Adela Sijansky, Anne Troubil and Annie Sacky all gone now and little gymnast Jackie Regmund standing in front holding up her plate.

I can still see Rose attending our Sunday afternoon Sokol and SPJST meetings year ago with her four grandsons in tow. A wonderful, sweet lady, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Czech Heritage Society.

Donations in Rose's memory were received from Norma Baker, Becky Elzner, Milly and Jerry Elzner, Marion Peterek, Pauline Novosad, Helen and Clement Kasparek and Anna Marie Moss. A sympathy card was signed for the family.

We were sorry to hear Albertina Oakes had been in the hospital and was still ill along with her sister Lillian Covil. Get well ladies! Jerry Elzner delivered flowers for us to Albertina at the hospital. Marcellina Mokry was also under the weather. Betty Jurica was still in Cincinatti visiting her granddaughter over the Christmas holidays and several other members were also absent. We missed them all.

Two of our guests decided to become members. Welcome, Jeanette Malsbury and Louise Thompson, both sponsored by Milly Elzner.

Della Elzner's 12 year-old grandson, Adam, represented the Czech Republic at his school's cultural fair. His picture appeared in the December 27 Vestnik with Adam standing proudly beside his exhibit of Czech items. I'm sure his great uncle Jerry helped him out. Jerry Elzner also told us of the upcoming Migrant Mass to be held January 12 at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral. It has grown to 17 nationalities and Jerry has seen to it that the Czechs are always represented as well as Poland for his wife, Milly.

It is very impressive viewed on television.

We received a thank you note from the Ronald McDonald House for last month's donations and also a receipt from Metro Ministries.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Norma Baker, Mary Elzner and me.

Happy birthday is being sent to our missing birthday girls Carmen Jones, Frances Kosarek, Betty Jurica and Marcellina Mokry.

Once again, Judy Majek sent us six African violets for door prizes. Thanks a lot Judy—I won one. We had 11 prizes in all and the winners went home happy.

Our next meeting will be held February 1.

Sewing Circle reports on December meeting Ennis

The Ennis Sewing Circle met December 14, 2000. Thirty-four members were present. Our guests were Laurie Vlk, Georgia Brozek, Charles Kosarek, Wesley Prachyl, Jerry Zmolek, Julius Podhrasky and Jerry Kohn.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Miro Brozek, brother of Georgia Brozek; Mavis Sanders, sister in-law of Alice Roberts. We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved families.

Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes. Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as read.

Sunshine Chairperson Eleanora Pelzel gave her report. Christmas gifts were taken to sisters who cannot attend the meetings. A thank you note was received from Virginia Patak for the Christmas gift for her mother, Hattie Lekar. Sister Mary Kopecek thanked the Circle for the Christmas gift and the nice visit with sister Lucy Honza and her granddaughter, who delivered the gift. "Happy Birthday" was sung to the December and January birthday celebrants.

The nominating committee Sylvia Laznovsky, Frances Vinkler, Rosie Mynarcik and Libbie Vrla met.

Sidney Bridewell read a funny joke and a cute article. Sister Mary Kubacak's birthday, 95 years young was celebrated December 25, 2000.

Sorry that Mary was not able to attend our Christmas meeting.

The quilt was won by sister Dorothy Prachyl. Gifts were exchanged. Then we enjoyed a delicious meal.

Congratulations to the following: Bryan Honza, grandson of sister Lucy Honza, who graduated from the Marines in San Diego, California. He will go to his schooling in Florida; I am very proud`of my daughter, Harriet Ann Alice Roberts. She is now First Class Petty Officer in the Navy Reserve.

Sister Adell Vlk had an exciting Christmas surprise when she got a phone call saying that her name was chosen in the drawing for a Thomas Kinkade painting entitled, "Lights of Liberty." Thomas Kinkade intends to present the "Lights of Liberty" to both the outgoing and incoming first families.

The next meeting will be February 8, 2001.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy The officers and membership of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, express their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge sister, LORRAINE CRY 85, of El Campo who died Friday, December 29, 2000.

She was born December 12, 1915 to the late Louis and Agnes Holub. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, SPJST Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje and St. Philips Catholic Church. She retired from Commercial State Bank where she worked as assistant vice president.

Survivors include nieces, Mildred Muschalek of Edna, LaVerne Schilhab of El Campo, Lorraine Sears of Temple and Carol Lehnert of Victoria; and nephews, Eugene Holub of Louise, Mike Holub of El Campo, Louis. Holub of Needville and Bobby Holub of Liberty.

She was preceded in death by husband, Leon E. Cry. Visitation was 10 a.m. Monday, January 1, 2001 at Triska Funeral

Home Chapel. A rosary was recited 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 2 at St. Philips Catholic Church. Following the rosary, services were held at 10 a.m. at the church with the Reverend Thu Nguyen officiating.

Pallbearers were Louis Holub, Michael Holub, David Holub, Leon Schilhab Jeff Lehnert and Ed Lehnert.

Entombment was at Holy Cross Memorial Park. Triska Funeral Home, El Campo was in charge of arrangements.

In Memory of Vlasta Prasek Viasta Angela Prasek of Karnes City, Texas passed away on September 1, 2000. She attained the age of 93 years, 11 months and ten days.

Mrs. Prasek was born September 21, 1906 in Cyclone, Texas. She marreid Rudolph Prasek on Janaury 13, 1924 in Floresville, Texas. She was a resident of Karnes City since 1925 moving here from Shiner, Texas.

She was a homemaker, a member of St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Karnes, City and a member of SPJST Lodge 93. She is survived by a son, E. R. (Sonny) Prasek and wife, Ruth of Karnes City, Texas; daughter, Mildred Murrell of Victoria, Texas; sister, Cecilia Young of Poth, Texas; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph; father and mother; Joseph W. and Cecilia Manak; brothers, Adolph and Edwin Manak; greatgrandson, Michael Fulton.

Pallbearers were Robert L. Busselman, Shelby Prasek, John Wiatrek, Wilse Brown, Taylor Wayne Blaheney and Raymond Maczygemba.

Her funeral service was held on Monday, Deptember 4, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel in Karnes City with ReverendAdrian Adamek officiating. Burial was in Karnes City Cemetery.

Mrs. Prasek belonged to and was president of the Karnes Hospital Association where she donated a lot of her time and talent in making supplies

for the hospital such as bands and binders used for mothers and babies.

How well I remember the bands when I had my babies.

Mrs. Prasek always grew a pretty yard with flowers and had a garden which the chickens she raised for eggs also loved to get into. She was an avid cook and baker of many kolaches and many, many sugar cookies which her daughter in-law, Ruth, commented on. She also made many baby quilts and quilt tops. Her son, Sonny, now mayor of Karnes City, is carrying on the tradition of making bread and kolaches.

Mrs. Prasek was a very sweet lady.

This sweetness was evident in the years she spent at the nursing home where she made her handiwork talent her pasttime.

Our sympathy goes out to the family.

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 93, Hobson, Texas, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to extend our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family and friends of our beloved and departed Vlasta Prasek.

Resolution of Sympathy The officers and membership of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje wish to express our sincere and deepest sympathy to the family and friends of our departed lodge member, ANNIE ROD HUBENAK, 93, of El Campo who died Monday, December 18, 2000.

She was born June 27, 1907, in Hungerford, to the late Joseph and Kathrina Rod. She was a homemaker and a member of SPJST society for 75 years. She was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church.

Survivors include daughter, Elsie Guess of El Campo; son, Jerome Hubenak of Corpus Christi; 14 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband, Raymond J. Hubenak; daughters, Gayleen Carroll and Vlasta Koehl; sons, Webster Hubenak and Victor Hubenak; five sisters; seven brothers; and one grandchild.

Visitation was held after 5 p.m.

Monday, December 18, 2000 at Triska Funeral Home Chapel.

A rosary was recited 10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 19 at St. Philip Catholic Church. Services followed at 10:30 a.m. at the church with the Reverend Michael Petering officiating.

Burial was at Holy Cross Memorial Park Triska Funeral Home El Campo.

Memory of Frank Tilich In

Frank Louis Tilich was born October 28, 1908 in Schulenburg, Texas. He passed away on November 7, 2000 in Houston, Texas. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston for over 50 years. He was active in the Choral Club, the Men's Club and even served as 4n,officer. He was also an active representative of Germania Insurance.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Tilich; and his only child, Dorothy Mary Lathrop.

He is survived by his longtime companion and dance partner, Bessie Dewer of Houston, also a member of Lodge 88; son in-law, Ronnie Joe Lathrop and granddaughter, Rhonda Jo Lathrop, both of Commerce, Texas; another granddaughter, Mary Wheatherly; and only great-grandchild, Stephanie Wheatherly.

Mr. Tilich was buried November 10, 2000 at Brookside Memorial Park.

Reverend Donald Black of Trinity Lutheran Church officiated.

Pallbearers were Mikel Shane Bell, Thomas Uribe as well as Ernest Anders, Fred Buri, Sydney Jurchak and Clebum Lincke, all members of Lodge 88.

Memory of Otto Rieger In

Otto Rieger, 78, of Beyersville, died on Thursday, January 4, 2001.

Mr. Rieger was born on August 14, 1922 in,the Beyersville Community, the son of Anna (Bachmayer) and Joseph Rieger. On June 17, 1947, he was married to Millie Fojtik.

A lifetime resident of the area, Mr. Rieger was a retired farmer and carpenter. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Taylor VFW Post, American Legion Post, SPJST and the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Bobby Gene; five brothers; and five sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Millie Rieger of Beyersville; daughter, Bonnie Wolf and husband, Jodie of Beyersville; son, Ronnie Rieger and wife, Patti of Beyersville; sister, Elsie Krieg of Austin; five grandchildren, Tom Harrison and wife, Crystal. Jason Wolf, Nikki Leschber and husband, Clint, Kendra Wolf, Kristin Rieger; three great-grandchildren, Lane Wolf, Paige Leschber and Garrett Harrison.

Rosary was recited at 6 p.m., Sunday, January 7 at Condra Funeral Home. Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m., Monday, January 8 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Reverend Tom Chamberlain officiating. Burial was in the Taylor City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tom Harrison, Greg Hirt, Jason Wolf, Steven Hubnik, Clint Leschber, Derek Hubnik and John Matysek.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Frank Bachmayer Scholarship Fund at Thrall High School or to the Williamson County Activity Center.

Memory of Joe Frank Sebesta In

The officers and members of Lodge 202, Jourdanton express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed brother, Joe Frank Sebesta, who passed away November 21, 2000 at the age of 72.

He was born May 25, 1928 to Julie Bravenec and Joe F. Sebesta Sr. in Caldwell, Texas. He was an active member of Lodge 202 and will be missed. In 1999, Sebesta was selected as the" Pleasanton"Senior Citizen of the Year" for his many contributions to the city.

He is survived by his wife, Melva Lou McCaughn of Pleasanton, and a daughter, Grace Littlefield and husband of Angleton; three brothers Reverend Dr. and Mrs. Robert Sebesta of Seguin, Reverend Dr. and Mrs. Daniel Sebesta of Kerrville and Reverend Dr. and Mrs. David Sebesta of Lampasas; one grandson, Robbie Littlefield; nine nieces and nephews; and ten great-nieces and greatnephews.

Funeral services were held November 24, 2000 at First United Methodist Church in Pleasanton.

Interment followed in Amphion Cemetery in Poteet. Arrangements under the direction of Hurley Funeral Home, Pleasanton.

She was a housewife and homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting, needlework, puzzles and was an avid reader. She was a faithful member of West Brethren Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the choir. She was also a member of the Christian Sisters, Mutual Aid Society Lodge 4, SPJST Lodge 6 and the Senior Luncheon Activity Program.

She is survived by a son, John A. Hegar of East Norwalk, Connecticutt; daughters, Anna Vera Spicer of Waco, Dorothy Kocian and husband, Joe of Waco and Ida Ruth Hodge of Conroe; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and friends.

Burial was in the Ocker Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Haisler was born in Milano to E. F. and Janie Baca Vanecek. She was a resident of Bell County most of her life. She married L.B. Haisler November 6, 1929 in Caldwell.

Prior to retiring in 1969, she farmed with her husband in the Oenaville community. She was a member of Ocker Brethren Church and the Christian Sisters. She was a -SPJSTmember of Seaton Senior Citizen Group, RVOS and a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone where she was an active member for many years. She assisted her husband selling tickets for lodge functions when her husband was Ticket Chairman for many years.

Dear Readers, At the meeting, it was brought up that if the youth want to earn extra points they can make valentines for the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes residents. You can make as many as you wish, but you can earn only 40 points for four valentines. The youth club will also participate in the March of Dimes Bean Bags for Babies. We are ordering the Heartfelt Bears, so everyone will have to try their best to sell their share.

Dear Readers, Our last meeting was January 3, 2001. We discussed going to the movies on Saturday, what skits to do for Youth Achievement Day. The charities for the month of January were 1) bring three canned goods per family and 2) bring a coat for the needy.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club plans trip to Opas Theater, gives to mission Dear Readers, Our last meeting was very well attended. We started at 6 p.m. with old business as well as some new. We discussed going to the movies on January 6. We also discussed going to the Opas Theater which will be held on March 24. Deadline to sign up for tickets was January 3. We decided to donate $30 to Twin City Mission to help buy clothes food and other supplies.

Courtney Macik and Mia Kovar provided the crafts which consisted of making snowflakes out of paper. They were really cute and the little ones enjoyed seeing all the shapes sticking together and forming a a pretty snowflake. For refreshments, we had punch with some delicious brownies.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club helps with blood drive Dear Vestnik Readers, Adell Rejcek, a lodge member, organized a blood drive for Saturday January 7. Our lodge donated the use of the dinning room for the drive. The youth club kept very busy at the door, signing in the donors. Forty people signed up to donate, however, Mrs. Rejcek was hoping to collect 50 units of blood. Much to our delight, the Carter Blood Bank ran out of supplies when 88 units were collected!

Unfortunately, some donors had to be turned away. Way to go!

Dear Readers, The Lodge 9 Youth Club had its monthly meeting on December 3. All members brought phone books to recycle and toys for M.A.S.H. After the meeting, we had a covered dish supper and our Christmas program that night.

We discussed January charities which are to bring canned goods for the Food Pantry and coats for the needy. We also discussed going to the movies on January 6, 2001.

17, New Tabor Youth Club reports on lock-in Lodge

The New Tabor youth group, Lodge 17, held its December meeting and lock-in on December 1 at 6 p.m. First, we went to Gattiland to eat and play games. When we got back to the lodge, we exchanged gifts, played games, watched a movie and had a snack before we went to bed. The lock-in ended at 8 a.m. on December 2.

The January meeting will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2001 at 3 p.m.

This month's social was a Halloween party at SPJST Lodge 88 on October 21 at 7 pm. The charity project for this month was to bring in canned goods, coats, and blankets.

This month, Mrs. Zalesky resigned as Assistant Youth Leader. I would like to congratulate her for doing such a good job as assistant.

The charity project for this month was to volunteer at the Salvation Army for Thanksgiving.

Members enjoyed having cookies and drinks for refreshments.

SPJST LAM invites adults, young people to enter logo contest Budding artists and those with a flair for communication and design have a unique opportunity to support the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum by designing a logo for the nonprofit organization.

Anyone may enter the contest, says LAM President Glenn Kaminsky "We're interested in eye-catching designs that convey the excitement and scope of the of the LAM." Within the SPJST, there will be two contests — one for adults and one for members 18 and younger. Youth club members will receive 20 merit points for participation. Non-members and SPJST employees are also invited to submit logos; however, they will not be competing with entries submitted

by SPJST members.

All logos are to be submitted on 8 1/2" x 11" white paper or artboard and may be black on white or multicolored. Computer-aided designs are also welcome. "Artists should avoid adding a lot of small detail to their designs because the detail will be lost in the final. format," Kaminsky says.

Designs may include images as well as text. Deadline for receiving the logos is Friday, February 23, 2001.

Judging will be blind as the names of each artist will be attached to the entries only after judging has concluded.

"The contest winner will have the prestige of seeing his or her creation

used in communications promoting the LAM as well as on memorabilia, T-shirts, coffee mugs, posters and other merchandise," Kaminsky says.

In addition the First Place winner in the adult logo contest will receive tickets for four to a 2001 Houston Astros or Texas Rangers baseball game. The winner of the youth logo contest will receive day tickets for four to SeaWorld or Six Flags Over Texas. Tickets are courtesy of SPJST. A Little Background The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) stands as a memorial to the pioneer forefathers and mothers who settled Texas and organized SPJST. Credit goes to past SPJST Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris for his work in starting the LAM in the fall of 1963 and to Otto Hanus for his diligence as the LAM's first curator.

The lion's share of thanks for the collection goes to SPJST members and friends of the Society who have donated the thousands of artifacts and volumes on display. Czech history is filled with periods of repression and loss of national identity.

In the last century, under Nazism and Communism, truth was a rare com modity. These artists' ability to use irony and metaphor when the truth could not be heard, made it difficult for official censors to discern the subtext of a production. The end result has been a body of work recognized as essentially Czech with its own identifiable character, a representation of space as opposed to place.

A program of the Tobin Foundation at the McNay, Metaphor and Irony: Czech Scenic and Costume Design, 1920 - 1999 is produced by the Ohio Arts Council with support from The Ohio State University, Columbus and Lima campuses and the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas.

Exhibition Activities and Schedule: Lecture Metaphor and Irony: The Czech World View on Stage Sunday, February 4, 2001, 3 p.m.

Leeper Auditorium Joe Brandesky, Co-Curator and Associate Professor of Theatre from Ohio State University - Lima, will share insights and reflections on the development of Czech design, the trends and tendencies of past genera tions of designers and the possibilities of Czech theatre and costume design in the 21st century.

About the McNay Housed in what was the home of the late Marion Koogler McNay, the McNay Art Museum focuses primarily on 19th and 20th century European and American art. Artists featured include Cezanne, Picasso, Gauguin, Matisse, O'Keeffe, Cassatt and Toulouse-Lautrec. The museum's collection of prints and drawings is one of the finest in the Southwest, while the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts is one of the premier collections of its kind in the country. Contemporary art and modern- sculpture are growing strengths of the collection, which now numbers of 13,000 objects. Other areas of concentration include medieval and Renaissance European sculpture and painting. Southwest folk art, and Native American arts and crafts from New Mexico.

Opened in 1954, the McNay was the first modern art museum in Texas.

Marion McNay left her art collection, her mediterranean-style residence and an endowment "for the advancement and enjoyment of modern art." The 23 acres of grounds, which include fountains, broad lawns and a Japanese garden and fish pond, are a popular spot for picnics and photography. The museum also featured a research library with 30,000 volumes, the 300seat Leeper Auditorium and a Museum Store.

"Czech Immigration Passenger Lists, Volume IX" is now available.

After many years of research, over 30,000 Czech immigrants who arrived in Baltimore between 1880 and 1899 have been identified. This was done by reviewing and abstracting 33 rolls of National Archives microfilm. The primary destinations of these immigrants were various Midwestern states and Texas. Since Baltimore was second only to New York in the number of Czech arrivals to America, this publication will be a significant research aid to Czech American genealogists and family historians. This book includes an alphabetical listing of these Czech immigrants giving their names, age, place of origin, date of arrival, name of ship and destination.

There is also a discussion on sources of immigrant ship data and pictures.

The Czech Cultural Center Houston is proud to present a Benefit for The Texas Czech Physicians Exchange Program (TCPEP) a 501 (c) (3) organization Monday, January 22, 2001 at Houston's preeminent Museum of Health and Medical Science. 151S Hermann Drive.

In 1991 following the fall of communism in the then Czechoslovakia, Dr. Arthur Jansa and Dr. Tomas Klima of Houston's Texas Medical Center established the TCPEP organization based on private contributions and through collaboration of Charles University Prague Medical Faculty, Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, a program to rotate three physicians for a three month period through an American medical orientation. To date, some 90 physicians from the now Czech Republic have benefited from this experience impacting not only their medical practice and their patient care, but a priceless goodwill in international relations between the two countries.

design exhibit The McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, is proud to host, "Metaphor and Irony: Czech Scenic and Costume Design, 1920 - 1999".

On display in the Tobin Gallery, February 4 through March 25, 2001, this history of theatrical art from the Czech Republic traces an 80-year span of costume and stage design with a political, social and artistic purpose.
