Something New for 2001 Social Memberships Effective January 1, 2001, local lodges will have the option to enroll social members. The bylaw which provides for this new level of membership was approved by delegates to the Twenty-Eighth SPJST Convention this past June. The Supreme Lodge addressed the matter in its October meeting and is referenced in the minutes of that meeting which appear in this week's Vestnik.

Essentially, the new provision enables a lodge to extend membership to an individual without first making the purchase of an SPJST life insurance certificate or annuity.

Certain prohibitions apply: Social members, while they may serve in committee positions and participate in various lodge and statewide fraternal competitions, may not hold office in the lodge or at the district level, nor will they be eligible to serve as convention delegates. Likewise, social members are ineligible to participate in the mortgage lending program, scholarship program, district and statewide youth achievement contests. Finally, social memberships will not be counted towards annual membership tallies as they relate to the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

Even with these prohibitions, lodges may find it advantageous to court and enroll social members. First and foremost, social members can help to broaden the base of membership in a lodge. Or, to put it another way: The more the merrier! Second, social members - and their families - provide prime sales leads for local lodge sales representatives.

The matter of assessing annual membership dues for social members is being left up to each lodge to determine. Whereas $10 per year might be considered appropriate in some lodges, $35 might be considered a bargain in others. Really, it depends greatly on what the lodge has to offer in exchange for the dues. Whatever amount -- if any - your lodge decides on, please inform your social members that the Vestnik is available to them at an annual rate of $20 per year. You may even want to consider incorporating this expense into your social membership dues structure.

The decision to allow for social memberships can be a very positive element in the growth and development of our fraternal order. Fraternalism at its best - seeks to build new relationships. With new relationships comes vitality, adventure, the freedom to strive, compete and create. And -

at its best - fraternal involvement makes men, women and children happy in the work they are doing. Projects that strive to achieve a sense of purpose make us proud to be members and attract others.

Mother Nature in Charge It's really getting cold out there!

Looks like we're going in to be in for quite a winter . . .

But then again, who knows? Just like the weather, the game of life is dictated by the rules of nature.

You never really know what to expect. Bearing that in mind, the best time to purchase life insurance is when you are able-bodied and can purchase a good amount of coverage for a reasonable price. An SPJST life insurance certificate can help you and your family achieve financial security under a variety of uncertain future conditions.

Expression of Sympathy Heartfelt condolences are extended to SPJST Assistant to the Vice President Kathy Fritz and her family on the death of her mother, Estelle Komar, 79, who passed away on Friday, December 8. Funeral services for Sister Komar were held Monday afternoon in Temple. May she rest in peace.

ENC President extends greetings, invites donations and pledges Dear Members and Friends, Seasons Greetings from the Education and Nature Center Board.

This is just a brief update to let you know that since the SPJST Convention in June, we have been meeting and discussing ideas relating to the organization of the SPJST Education and Nature Center. As you may recall, delegates to the 28th SPJST Convention in June voted to pursue the development of this long range and visionary project. The fact that delegates swiftly endorsed the Education and Nature Center concept, reflects the faith and confidence our members have in the future of the SPJST and the rallying power of a worthwhile cause. It's exciting!

Minutes of the October 25, 26 and 27, 2000 Regular Meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST Held at the Home Office Temple, Texas The regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST was called to order by Chairman of the Board Vanek at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Howard B. Leshikar, President Gene McBride, Vice-President Lanita Anglin, Secretary-Treasurer Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor Donnie Victorick - District I Frank Klinkovsky - District II

Chairman Vanek welcomed incoming Director Pflughaupt, Director Ahlstrom, and honorary Vice President Mikeska to the meeting.

The Supreme Lodge Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of the deceased members.

MINUTES - The Supreme Lodge Minutes were reviewed page by page.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved; seconded by Director Hanus to accept the minutes as presented. Motion passed unanimously.

The Board went into executive session to review the minutes of the previous executive session and to discuss a personnel matter.

Editor Vanicek was welcomed to the meeting.

OLD BUSINESS CEMETERY MARKERS - President Leshikar reported that a total of twenty-one cemetery markers have been sold.

FRATERNALIST OF THE YEAR - President Leshikar presented ideas on how the Society might have more participation from the local lodges. He recommended that an outside group do the judging and that the Supreme Lodge give more recognition to the person chosen Fraternalist of the Year by the local lodges. The local lodge Fraternal Activities Coordinator's have received information about the program and they will be notified when their nominee's application is received at the Home Office. Director Bayer moved, seconded

by Director. Victorick to accept President Leshikar's recommendation.

Motion passed unanimously.

LOCAL LODGE WORKSHOP - President Leshikar presented the officers recommendation for the Local Lodge Officer's Workshop and Lodge Incentive Banquet. This workshop would be the first large public presentation of the Mission 2100 program. The workshop/banquet would begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2001 with Vice President McBride being in charge. There would be a total of five cash door prizes, one for $500.00; one for $400.00; one for $300.00; one for $200.00, and one for $100.00. To be eligible for the door prize, you must be a current lodge officer, lodge officer of 2000 or a sales representative and be present at the time of the drawing.

President Leshikar moved to accept the officers' recommendation for the workshop/banquet, seconded by Director Hanus and carried unanimously.

SPJST CONVENTION - There was a discussion as to whether the SPJST 2004 Convention should be held during the week as it has been in the past or if it should be changed to one weekday and the weekend. It was decided to leave the 2004 Convention as it has been done in the past and to poll the delegates at the next convention for their recommendation.

SOCIAL MEMBERS - A discussion concerning the rights of the social member was held. A social member is one who pays local lodge dues and/or assessments as prescribed by the local lodge. The social member cannot be a delegate, an officer, or vote in lodge matters. The social member may be appointed to a committee and the social member has the right to deliberate and vote on that committee. A local lodge is encouraged to welcome social members. Social members are not reported in any way to the Home Office.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR - State Youth Director Zavodny's report was presented by President Leshikar and the report was reviewed by the Supreme Lodge.

The SPJST 2000 State King and Queen appeared at the Westfest and will be appearing at the Texas Fraternal Congress in College Station and the Temple Christmas parade. The Youth Achievement Day and Royalty will be a oneday celebration on August 4, 2001.

4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 13, 2000 The 2001 and 2002 Youth program updates recommended by the District Youth Counselor were reviewed. The financial items recommended by the District Youth Counselor included: 1. A $500.00 incentive to new youth clubs. Funds would be allocated over a sixmonth period and the club had to have a minimum of five members.

2. A $200.00 incentive to a re-organized youth club. The club had to be inactive for at least two years and when re-activated have a minimum of five youth. The funds would be allocated over a six-month period.

3. Authorize the purchase of the youth club rulebook with the same format as 2000.

4. Authorize youth leader recognition pins noting their years of service.

5. Increase the State Merit Point Scholarship to $1,500.00.

6. Authorize the reimbursement of parade entries in the amount of $25.00 for decorated vehicles and $100.00 for floats.

7. Research the possibility of having two additional statewide weekend camps in the spring of 2002 in addition to the regular district camps with Further information will be furnished to the Supreme Lodge at a later date.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Bayer to approve items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the District Youth Counselors recommendation. Motion carried unanimously. Director Victorick Moved, seconded by Director Broz to approve the research for a camp study. Motion passed unanimously.

The youth clubs currently receive $1.00 per youth per attendance at a youth club meeting and beginning January 1, 2001 this will be increased to $2.00 per youth.

Director Bayer requested State Youth Director Zavodny to attend Lodge 202Jourdanton's next meeting on November 5, 2000.

MUSEUM - President Leshikar presented the museum report for the past quarter. There have been 398 visitors to the museum during this period. The traveling mini museum made four appearances during this past quarter.

SALES - Vice President McBride reviewed a comparison of insurance written and applications written for the past four years. The following chart shows these figures.

NEW LODGES - Vice President McBride reported the lodges in process are 205-Terrell, 207-Iowa Park, 209-Hamilton, 210-Fairfield, 211-Palestine, 212Boerne, 213-Fredricksburg, 216-Athens, 217-Spring, 218-Laredo, 219-E1 Paso, 220- McAllen, 221-Harker Heights, 222-Vernon, 223-Palacios, and 224Waxahachie. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Director Bayer to extend the date for organizing the new lodges to January 31, 2001.

STATE FIELD MANAGER - State Field Manager's report was reviewed for the month of July.

COMMISSION - Vice President McBride reported Actuary Agee is doing a study on the commission schedule and the study should be completed by the end of November.

REINSURANCE - There was a discussion on the reinsurance company the Society uses and the amount of liability the SPJST retains. Vice President McBride suggested bringing information to the next meeting about changing medical testing and the amount of insurance retained by SPJST. E & 0 COVERAGE - Vice President McBride presented information on E & 0 Coverage for the agents. The coverage would only be offered to licensed agents with a 15% reduction in the premiums if it is mandatory for all agents. Vice President McBride will present further information during the January meeting.

It was requested to see if the coverage could extend to cover the local lodge officers now. There was a discussion about requiring all sales representatives and all local lodge officers to have errors and omission coverage within three years.

Vice President McBride reported the state field representatives are contacting every sales representative that has not sold an insurance certificate in the last three years. He will present this information during the January Supreme Lodge Meeting. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky for the definition of a producing sales representative, which is one that writes six applications

per year. Motion passed unanimously.

SALES INCENTIVE TRIP - Vice President McBride reported there were sixty-eight people on the sales incentive trip to Branson on October 5-8, 2000.

There were compliments from those that took the trip. The field people and home office employees that went on the trip took vacation days.

MISSION 2100 - Vice President McBride presented the proposal for the Mission 2100. For this program to succeed, it will require the focus and energy of the Supreme Lodge, Editor, Home Office employees, local lodge officers, local members, sales representatives, all field personnel, youth, State Youth Director, District Youth Counselors, and youth members.

The Mission 2100 program would be based on the number of applications written. There was a discussion about the Modified Whole Life certificate. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Broz to discontinue selling the Modified Whole Life plan when the Youth Achiever comes available. Motion passed unanimously.

The Mission 2100 membership drive is to write 2100 applications between January 1, 2001 - December 31, 2001. Each lodge would be given a quota based on a formula of 5% of their members or ten members, whichever is greater. If the lodge meets their quota and if the Society achieves 2100 applications, the local lodge would receive 50% more of their local lodge incentive award amount.

If the Society met the 2100 goal, the local lodge officers of lodges that meet their quotas, would have a chance at a trip. The lodge officer's names would be put in a drawing (only one officer per lodge could win a trip). There would be one trip awarded for each four lodges per category. The value of the trip would depend on the local lodge incentive category won.

Members that refer prospects would be recognized in three ways.

1. For three referrals - picture in the Vestnik as "Mission 2100 Recruiter" 2. For six cumulative referrals - recognized in the lodge and the "Mission 2100 Gold" 3. For ten cumulative referrals - recognized in the lodge, receive a "Mission 2100" recruiter pin and on the "Mission 2100 Roll of Honor."

The incentives for the youth and youth clubs, if the 2100 goal is met, and, of this, at least 350 are new youth applications ages zero to seventeen are: 1. Each youth that recommends gets one chance per applicant for a fourday/three night trip. (Only one awarded) 2. Each youth club leader whose youth club meets their quota will receive an "evening on the town." The value of this incentive will be determined later.

3. The District Youth Counselor whose district clubs meets their quotas get an "evening on the town." A District Youth Counselor or Youth Leader would be eligible for only one award. The value of this incentive will be determined later.

4. Each youth club would receive $10.00 for each new youth club member.

5. The youth club that receives the most new members would receive a trip to Six Flags or Sea World.

There was a discussion as to the incentives and quotas for the sales representatives. Vice President McBride is to determine the quotas and the incentives for the sales representatives.

If the 2100 goal is attained, each officer, director, editor, home officer employee and field employee would receive a $500.00 bonus. The home office employee that refers the most applicants per month would receive a dinner for two. To be eligible, a minimum of six referrals is required, with only one prize each month.

The employee who refers the most applicants each month will have a special parking place for the month.

Vice President McBride moved to accept the Mission 2100 program with the changes, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas. Motion carried unanimously.

MANAGING GENERAL AGENCY - Vice President McBride presented the information on what requirements have to be completed for a MGA to be started.

Vice President McBride expressed an opinion this will be beneficial to the members because it will give the sales representative more products and it would be a service to the members. There would be a need for two people to get their MGA licenses. Vice President McBride is to bring back more information on the MGA at the next meeting.

LODGE COMPLIANCE - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented a report of the local lodges that the home office had not received an update of the 2000 officers.

LODGE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported there have been five lodges to take advantage of the program that a lodge can borrow $10,000.00 at no interest for seven years. The lodge would be making monthly payments towards the principal. There are three lodges on the waiting list for 2001.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Bayer to allocate $50,000.00 for this program with funds being available January 1, 2001.

Financial Secretary Mikulas expressed his and his family's appreciation for the celebration for his forty years with SPJST. INTERIM LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented information on the interim loan pilot project. There were nine members that took advantage of this program. There was a discussion of some difficulties of administering the program. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to discontinue the interim loan program. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Vanek, Director Broz, Director Hanus, and Director Bayer. Director Krizan voted in opposition. Motion passed.

VESTNIK - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the subscription list of the Vestnik now stands at 8,097. The weekly postage amounts to approximately $1,425.00 and publishing cost amounts to $900.00 weekly.

DEFINED BENEFIT PLAN - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the payout of the SPJST Employee Defined Benefit Plan was completed in September 2000. The yearly cost of the defined benefit plan amounted to approximately $200,000.00 per year, compared to the 401k plan of approximately $50,000.00.

INCENTIVE PROGRAM - Financial Secretary Mikulas presented information on lodges that have met the incentive program qualification of certificates issued during the first nine months. Sixteen lodges have acquired the first step award, six lodges have acquired the honorable mention award, six lodges have acquired the bronze award, three lodges the silver award, seven lodges the gold award, and one lodge the platinum award. The incentive awards will probably amount to about $23,000.00 by the end of the year.

It was brought to the attention of the Supreme Lodge the insurance code is being rewritten next year. It will be necessary to keep track of changes made in chapter ten.

MORTGAGE LOANS - Legal Advisor Kacir reported in the past quarter his office handled and closed twenty-seven new loans totaling $1,564,097.14 and fourteen refinances totaling $771,045.55. The smaller loans benefit more members and meet the market other lending institutions are not meeting.

LITIGATION/BANKRUPTCY/FORECLOSURE - Legal Advisor Kacir reported on threatened foreclosures, foreclosures in process, and bankruptcies.

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES, AND MUSEUM - The SPJST has received their IRS exemption under the IRS code 501 (c) 3.

HOME OFFICE PROPERTY - The City of Temple has expressed an interest in a ground lease of the property east of the Home Office. The City of Temple would build an office building for the Social Security Administration and at the end of the lease the building would become property of the SPJST for no cost.

The Board of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum has no interest in this property for the forseeable future.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Victorick, to pass a resolution that the officers have the authority to negotiate a lease of all the property east of the Home Office for a time frame of ten years with an additional fiveyear option. There would be no expense to the Society and the leasee will maintain the property and there will be no cost to the SPJST. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Hanus, and Director Vanek. Voting against were Vice President McBride, Director Broz, and Director Bayer. Motion passed.

EDITOR - Editor Vanicek's report was reviewed. He reportedd on the number of pages, number of photos and the amount of circulation of each issue of the Vestnik from July 5, 2000 to October 18, 2000. Editor Vanicek presented suggestions for guidelines for a social member. Editor Vanicek presented a lengthy proposal of SPJST sponsoring a travel club. His proposal included aspects of

group travel , and liability concerns.

DIRECTOR I - Director Victorick reported on attending Lodge 38- Kovar's picnic and also visiting other lodges. Lodge 9-Snook has applied for a loan to make the lodge hall more accessible for physically challenged individuals. He thanked the Board for allowing him to attend the NFCA. It was a great experi ence and the speakers were very good and motivational. He thanked SecretaryTreasurer Anglin for attending District I Fall Fun Day and there were over ninety people in attendance.

DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky reported on attending District II Youth Camp, State Royalty and Youth Achievement Day. He attended all Lodge 47Seaton meeting, District II planning meeting, District II Fall meeting, seminar at Wildflower Country Club, Branson Trip, and two insurance classes at the Home Office and Lodge 29-Taylor and met with Field representative Kucera.

He reported that he would be agreeable to having a new lodge in the Austin area.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan reported that the following four target lodges Lodge 5-Pilot Point/Tioga, Lodge 178-Longview, Lodge 195-Cleburne, and Lodge 205-Terrell have made little progress since his last report and that these lodges need recruitment of new sales representatives and lodge officials. He complimented Lodge 54-West for sponsoring two local charity benefits for the West area residents this year and mentioned that this is the sort of thing more of our lodges need to do. Currently Lodge 54-West is planning a large Christmas Party for their membership and has again indicated an interest in establishing a youth club. Lodge 35-Elk continues to make great progress in revitalizing their lodge. Recently, they sponsored a successful Turkey Dinner Fundraiser and will host a Halloween Costume Dance this weekend. One February 4, 2001, Lodge 35-Elk is planning to celebrate their 100th Anniversary. Director Krizan recognized Lodge 130-Dallas for sponsoring a Czech Beseda Dance Group at several festivals this year and invite all Supreme Lodge members to attend their annual campout the weekend of November 3, 4, and 5, at Fort Parker Camp Ground in Mexia Texas. He recognized Lodge 183-Arlington for sponsoring a Meet the Lodge Seminar in August and thanked Supreme Lodge Vice President McBride and State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny for making a presentation to promote SPJST at this event. He also thanked Lodge 6-Cottonwood for again sponsoring a barbecue team at the National Cookoff in Meridian Texas to benefit the John Marc Camp for physically limited children. In closing Director Krizan concluded his old business by inquiring about the status of direct deposit. Financial Secretary Mikulas stated that he would report on this later in the meeting.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz reported this had been a busy quarter for him.

He complimented Vice President McBride for being installed as president of the FFMA section. He thanked Secretary-Treasurer Anglin for attending District IV Fun Day in Rowena. He invited everyone to attend the Czech Fest in Rowena.

DISTRICT V - Director Hanus reported Lodge 175-Rosenberg has a new sales representative. Lodge 142-Houston had a Fish Fry that did well this year.

Lodge 88-Houston has recently planted twelve new trees.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer reported Lodge 117-Robstown had two new sales representatives. Lodge 137-Taft has a sales representative that wants to begin selling insurance again. He reported on attending State Royalty and Youth Activities Day, several local lodge meetings and the District VII district meeting. He reported Lodge 161-Jourdanton merged into Lodge 202Jourdanton on October 1st. He reported he has received several calls as to why the honorary directors were not given a monetary honor at the past convention.

He inquired the status of the SPJST History that was supposed to have been ready at the last Convention. President Leshikar responded the SPJST History would be available in January 2001.

VESTNIK - Norma Cavanaugh, Publications Committee and David Kolar from Hill County Press were welcomed to the meeting. Bid proposals were mailed to four qualified bidders and Hill County Press was the only bid received. Mrs. Cavanaugh commented Hill County Press has been a satisfactory publisher of the Vestnik and awarding them the contract meets with the approval of the Publications Committee. Legal Advisor moved seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to award the Vestnik contract to Hill County Press. Motion passed unanimously.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek reported on attending the Lodge 4Hallettsville social that honored 50-year members; Sales Class at Lodge 23Moravia, and the 50-year pin presentation at Lodge 151-Wharton. He attended the Westfest with the SPJST King and Queen. Director Vanek thanked Vice President McBride for attending the District VI barbecue cookoff.

There was a discussion about presenting a one time amount of $500.00 to each officer and director upon their retirement. Director Broz moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir to present a one time amount of $500.00 to each retired director and each retired officer. Motion passed unanimously. President Leshikar moved seconded by Director Bayer to provide an outline of what is done for officers, directors and employees based on their years of service.

Motion passed unanimously.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 13, 2000 CALENDARS - The successful bidder for the SPJST 2001 calendar was Central Texas Printing for a bid of $13,477.00.

EMPLOYEES - There was a discussion concerning the override commission for the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator position. The State Fraternal Activities Coordinator will be encouraged to recruit sales representatives. President Leshikar presented a letter from the District Youth Counsels concerning the salary of the State Youth Director Zavodny. This item was tabled until the January meeting when salaries will be discussed.

PRODUCTS - Vice President McBride presented information on the Youth Achiever product that will be ready for selling in about three weeks. He also presented information on the Elite 30 product that should be available about the first of the year.

ADVERTISING - Vice President McBride expressed a need for new brochures to be ready January 1, 2001. The old brochures had cost about 15 cents each and how there is a need for one brochure to handle all the products. Vice President McBride presented a sample that could be used by sales representatives or members.

Editor Vanicek made a presentation of a 24-page book that he thought would serve the need of the membership and could be left in business offices for advertising purposes. There was a lengthy discussion on the subject of what is needed.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Hanus, for Vice President McBride and Editor Vanicek to develop samples of brochures, including wording of the brochures and cost estimates. The samples are to be mailed to the Supreme Lodge members at least two weeks before the January meeting. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a report on a seminar offered to Home Office Employees on optimism in the work place. By common consent it was decided for the officers to offer another similar seminar after the first of the year.

SALES - Vice President McBride reported on mailing an updated senior life mailout to members between 50 and 80 years old. There have been eighty-eight responses to this mailout.

Vice President McBride moved to appropriate a budget for sales incentives during 2001. The amount budgeted would be $30,000.00. Motion seconded by Director Bayer and passed unanimously.

Vice President McBride reported he has two vacancies for state field representative. One position would be for District I and District V and the other position is for District VI and District VII.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved to set up a loss reserve of $6,000.00 on the mortgage loans. Motion seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas. Motion passed unanimously.

President Leshikar brought backup before the Supreme Lodge for clarification the incentive override for the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator. The State Fraternal Activities Coordinator is to receive a 2% override of first year commission, excluding annuities, lone pay life, and dump in. This override will only be paid if the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator recruits five sales representatives in target areas and each sales representative write eight applications within a year period.

President Leshikar was excused from the meeting to interview an applicant for the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator position.

Director Vanek reported Director Hanus had to be taken to the hospital early this morning.

INTEREST SENSITIVE PRODUCTS - information concerning the interest sensitive products was presented by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin. SecretaryTreasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, for the interest rate of Universal Life to be 7.25% through January 31, 2001. Motion passed unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Broz to set the interest of Annuity I at 5.3% through January 31, 2001. Motion passed unanimously. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Hanus to set the interest rate of Annuity II at 6.3% through January 31, 2001. Motion passed unanimously. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky to set the interest rate of the Roth Annuity at 6.3% through January 31, 2001. Motion passed unanimously. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President McBride to set the interest rate of the Immediate Annuities at 6.3% through January 31, 2001. Motion passed unanimously.

INVESTMENTS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reviewed the investments made from July 1, 2000 to September 30, 2000. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Bayer to ratify the investments of the last quarter. Motion passed unanimously.

RESOLUTIONS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported the standard resolutions were last adopted in the Supreme Lodge Meeting of October 1992.

Director Victorick moved, seconded by President Leshikar to adopt the following resolution and the motion passed unanimously:

Vice President McBride reported on a meeting with JR Associates concerning recruitment of sales representatives. The contract would be for a 90-day trial period in an isolated area at a cost of $4,000.00. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Hanus, to give Vice President McBride the authority to negotiate with JR Associates to recruit sales representatives in an area Vice President McBride selects. He would offer a fee of $200.00 up front when a sales representative is signed and another $200.00 when the sales representative has six certificates issued. There would be a maximum of 20 sales representatives signed up. Motion passed unanimously.

MARKETING - Vice President McBride proposed working with a company that does estate planning and setting up trusts. The company would have seminars in the local lodges. This is a service SPJST could provide to our members.

By common consent it was decided to bring this up later.

There is difficulty in maintaining the advertising display and having it available when needed. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to hire a person to be in charge of the display and have the display at six different locations as needed at a salary of $100.00 a day plus mileage at the approved IRS rate and reasonable expenses. Motion passed unanimously.

Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, on the local lodge incentive program to pay the local lodge $35.00 per certificate on the in between categories. Motion passed unanimously.

There was a discussion concerning the effectiveness of billboards. There was a suggestion to channel the money from billboards to other more effective means of advertising. Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Director Bayer, for Vice President McBride to discontinue the billboard advertising when the contract for the billboards ends. Voting in favor were Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Financial Secretary Mikulas Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Klinkovsky, Director Krizan, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer.

Voting against were President Leshikar, Vice President McBride, and Director Victorick.

MORTGAGE LOANS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented a list of eleven loans over 90 days past due. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by President Leshikar, to accept Secretary-Treasurer Anglin's recommendations on the delinquent mortgage loans. Motion passed unanimously.

RESOLVED: That the president, vice president, or secretary-treasurer of the SPJST be, and they be hereby, fully authorized and empowered to transfer, convert, endorse, sell, assign, set over and deliver any and all shares of stock, bonds, debentures, notes, subscriptions warrants, stock purchase warrants, evidences of indebtedness, or other securities now, or hereafter standing, in the name of, or owned by, this Corporation, and to make, execute and deliver, under the, corporate seal of this Corporation or otherwise, any and all written instruments of assignment and transfer necessary or proper to effectuate the authority hereby conferred.

The officer or officers, as required by the Department of Treasury or other agencies or institutions, are authorized to execute certified copies of Resolutions consistent with the above and deliver to such departments, agencies, or institutions as is appropriate.

FURTHER RESOLVED: That whenever there shall be annexed to any instrument of assignment and transfer, executed pursuant to and in accordance with the foregoing resolution, a certificate of the secretary of this Corporation in office at the date of such certificate, shall set forth these resolutions and shall state that these resolutions are in full force and effect, and shall also set forth the names of the persons who are then officers of this Corporation. FINACIAL STATEMENT - Financial Secretary Mikulas compared the income and expense for the same period of 1999 and 2000. Over this time period the income was down by 1% over the same time period.

BUDGET - Financial Secretary Mikulas reviewed the itemized listing by account of all income and expenses for the first nine months of 2000. The income is at 75% of the budgeted amount and the expenses are at 84% of the budgeted amount.

DISCOUNTS OF A & B CERTIFICATES - Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to continue to allow a 25% reduction of premiums of certificates in classes "A" and "B" whose certificates were in force 35 years or more and if the member has attained the age of 70 years. An additional 25% reduction of premiums when the member attains the age of 75. This is in accordance with the Article 33(14). Motion seconded by Director Broz and carried unanimously.

REFUND TO LODGES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the refund to lodges in the year 1999 was computed by the number of certificates at the rate of $1.00 per paid-up certificate and $8.50 per premium paying certificates excluding annuities. If this formula is passed for 2000, the total refund will amount to approximately $160,000.00. The final determination will be made in the January 2001 meeting.

ANNUITIES - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there are 1,078 Annuity I certificates for a value of $16,601,963.54. There are 1,424 Annuity II Certificates for a value of $31,501,156.01. There are 45 Roth Annuities for a value of $295,531.29.

COMPUTERS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the need for the officers to have a laptop computer in each of their offices. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Broz to purchase laptop computers for Vice President McBride, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, and Financial Secretary Mikulas. Motion passed unanimously.

RECORDS - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on imaging SPJST records on the computer. This process has been tested and if necessary the files can be restored if there is a problem with the computer. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Bayer to destroy the insurance application and any information in a file after it has been imaged on the computer. Motion passed unanimously.

DIRECT DEPOSIT - SPJST has been informed our software vender will be offering this service. Financial Secretary Mikulas will make a recommendation in the January meeting.

President Leshikar returned to the meeting.

FURTHER RESOLVED: That accounts be established in the name of SPJST, also d.b.a. Supreme Lodge SPJST, in the following banks and financial institutions or its successors: Extraco Bank of Temple First State Bank of Temple Compass Bank, Temple Bank One, Temple Bank of America, Temple Chase Bank Other Banks approved by the Supreme Lodge of SPJST under the rules and regulations as prescribed by said banks or associations, wherein may be deposited any of the funds of this Corporation, where represented by cash, checks, notes, or other evidence of debt, and from which deposit withdrawals are authorized in the name of the Corporation by any two Supreme Lodge officers. Endorsements for deposit may be evidenced merely by the name of the Corporation being written or stamped on the instrument deposited, without designation of the party making the endorsement. The officer or officers, as required by financial or other institutions, are authorized to execute certified copies of Resolutions consistent with the above and deliver to such financial or other institutions as is appropriate.

TRANSFERING FUNDS - Secretary-Treasurer moved for authorization for any two or more officers to make transfer of funds in 2001 for the paying of all general expenses of the Society. This is in accordance with Article 34 of the By-Laws. Director Victorick seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

MAIL POLLS - Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented the mail poll of July 31, 2000 concerning the suspension of the $2 million cap on money market until after the defined benefit plan was paid; the mail poll of August 3, 2000 concerning the organization of a local lodge in Vernon; the mail poll of August 18, 2000 concerning the organization of a local lodge in Waxahachie, and the mail poll of September 21, 2000 to authorize Vice President McBride to select Jim Weist for the Training Position. On the September 18 mail poll, two selected other, one voted against and nine in

AUDIT - Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on mailing proposals to eight films for the independent audit for the next three years. Three firms returned the bids. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir to award the bid to Henry L. S. Jezek, CPA; the low bidder.

Motion passed unanimously.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved to destroy all the hard copy accounting copies prior to December 31, 1998 as these records have been audited by the Texas Department of Insurance and the monthly back up of the computer files are available. Motion seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir. Motion carried unanimously.

There was a discussion concerning the Christmas bonus to the employees.

Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Krizan to give the employees $500.00 prior to Thanksgiving and $500.00 in Wal-Mart gift certificates prior to Christmas. The amounts for new employees and parttime employees would be based on a pro-rata basis. Motion passed unanimously.

Recess was taken from 9:25 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

There was a discussion on whether or not to order another laptop computer so President Leshikar can have one and this would be four laptop computers for the officers. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Victorick to increase the number of the laptops to be ordered to four. Motion passed unanimously.

Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the books will close on December 28, 2000 at 12:01 p.m. Any transaction after that will go through accounting in 2001.

President Leshikar returned the discussion to gift certificates. Director Vanek moved, seconded by Director Bayer to give the officers, directors, and editor each a check, gift certificate, or reimbursement of $300.00, and each honorary Supreme Lodge member a check for $100.00. Motion passed unanimously.

8/VESTN1K—Wednesday, December 13, 2000 STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR - Secretary Treasurer Anglin presented a mail poll dated October 4, 2000 concerning the hiring of John Wells for the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator position.

There were six votes in favor, four votes wanted to wait until the Supreme Lodge meeting and two votes did not count. There was a discussion as to a mail poll whether it requires a majority of those voting or a majority of the whole body for a mail poll to pass. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Vice President McBride to accept John Wells as State Fraternal Activities Coordinator with a specified salary and the possibility of commission override if certain conditions are met. The contract would be reviewed after one year.

Motion passed unanimously.

John Wells, the new State Fraternal Activities Coordinator, was introduced to the members of the Supreme Lodge.

Legal Advisor Kacir reported on the directors of the Nature Center had met on two or more occasions and they are attempting to clearly define their purpose.

Legal Advisor Kacir's policy for the Legal Department is to destroy records of loans that have been paid off at maturity to be destroyed after four years.

Lodge loan papers, litigation files, bankruptcy files and personnel files given to the Legal Department thinned but generally are not destroyed. Legal Advisor Kacir moved seconded by Director Broz to ratify the Legal Department's policy. Motion carried unanimously.

NAME CHANGE - The SPJST's certificate of authority amended articles of incorporation, resolution, and filing fees have been submitted to the Texas Department of Insurance for the name change. Part of the name change process is the procedure of notifying every certificate holder forty-five days after the name change takes effect.

MGA - There was another discussion on who will need to get their MGA license. It was agreed for Vice President McBride and one other person would need to have a MGA license. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Bayer for the officers to report at the next meeting about the MGA. Motion passed unanimously.

President Skrivanek called for a major organizational meeting at the SPJST Home Office in Temple, Texas, on March 1, 1986. Not only the CEFT representatives but delegates from all organizations associated in any way with Texas Czechs, and any other interested individuals, were invited to attend, along with deans and other, representatives from both the University of Texas and Texas A&M. The general enthusiasm expressed for a fund raising project at this meeting encouraged the CEFT officers and directors to continue their efforts. It became apparent that Texas Czechs from a broad spectrum of fraternal and religious groups were willing to cooperate in the project.

"With matching funds from UT, the Texas Chair in Czech Studies was eventually funded for one million dollars."

DISTRICT I - Director Victorick had no new business to report on.

CEFT Funds Endowment DISTRICT II - Director Klinkovsky thought a lot was accomplished and this was a good meeting.

DISTRICT III - Director Krizan invited all Supreme Lodge members to the District III meeting and Fun Day this Sunday and to attend the Lodge 35-Elk 100th Anniversary Celebration February 4, 2001. He then requested that Lodge 35-Elk be given a new charter to replace their original, which had been lost or destroyed over the years. President Leshikar responded that he would take care of this.

Director Krizan then asked the question, "What is a good sales person worth?"

In line with this and as an incentive to recruit new sales representatives that the society needs. He proposed paying a cash incentive to lodges and sales representatives for recruiting producing sales representatives as defined by the Supreme Lodge in earlier action. By common consent it was agreed for Vice President McBride to bring back further information on this at the next meeting.

Director Krizan then thanked Chairman Matt Vanek for representing SPJST at the recent West Fest and for driving the State King and Queen in the parade. He also thanked incoming Director Pflughaupt and Ahlstrom for attending this meeting on their own time and complimented them for their devotion and dedication in this respect.

DISTRICT IV - Director Broz welcomed the two incoming directors and applauded them for attending the meeting. He requested the Legal Advisor to provide a ruling as to whether or not secret ballots can be held during executive sessions. He invited everyone to the District IV Czech Fest. He sees a problem with the society publishing everything we do in the Vestnik. This gives other fraternals information about our Society. He thought a lot was accomplished at this meeting.

DISTRICT VII - Director Bayer inquired as to why premiums are returned to applicants when they are not insurable, instead of offering the applicant another insurance product. Vice President McBride explained the underwriting procedures to the Supreme Lodge members.

DISTRICT VI - Director Vanek welcomed the two incoming directors. He reported the Temple Christmas Parade will be December 4, 2000 and the SPJST King and Queen will ride in the parade.

Vice President McBride thanked all the directors for the support they have shown him. There was a report that Director Hanus was doing well and should be released from the hospital shortly.

The January Supreme Lodge Meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. on January 10, 2001. y common consent, the meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.

end of 1988, only about half of the goal of $500,000 had been met, but a major breakthrough in the fund-raising campaign came in early 1989. At a meeting on March 4, at RVOS headquarters in Temple, Mr. Skrivanek announced that — after preliminary contacts made by Sid Pokladnik and Calvin Chervenka with Al Kercho of Fort Worth — Patrick Patek, President of the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation of Wilmington, Delaware, had indicated that a substantial contribution to the endowment fund was imminent. The Birch Foundation had tentatively agreed to pledge approximately $200,000, assuring that the goal for the endowment could be met in the near future.

Negotiations concerning matching funds and other issues were reopened with both target universities while discussions with the Birch Foundation continued, with Sidney Kacir taking an active part. At the same time the CEFT adopted a new set of By-Laws which refined and clarified the form and functions of the organization and which made it more efficient in administering the endowment. The process of organizing a master list of donors to the CEFT was begun, and Howard Leshikar, President of the fraternal organization SPJST, was elected to serve as a new director at a May 1989 meeting.

The CEFT, once again an active organization, began to hold frequent meetings, and the drive to fund, the Czech Chair was publicized throughout the State. Many of the largest donations in 1986 were made by the CEFT officers themselves, and fraternal and other organizations began to pledge large sums as well. The goal was to collect $500,000, with the expectation that the University receiving the endowment would match this figure, for a total endowment of one million dollars. As early as January 1985, a few individuals had already begun to make pledges toward a possible endowment. At a CEFT meeting in Ennis on May 3, 1986, it was reported that about $102,000 had been raised in pledges and actual donations.

Later that year, on November 16, a meeting was held in conjunction with the Sesquicentennial Celebration entitled "Czech Music in Texas" in Bryan, Texas, an event which itself functioned as a CEFT fund-raiser. By this time, over $125,000 was committed to the endowment, and Ben Trcalek of Caldwell was appointed Treasurer of the organization, assuming the financial duties that had been carried out until then by President Skrivanek.

(After Mr. Trcalek's death,the position of Treasurer was taken over by Mr. Trcalek's son Ben, Jr.) At a meeting on January 31, 1987, it was reported that nearly $175,000 in cash and pledges had been raised. During 1987 Glen Hutka and Laddie A. Matula,Sr. joined the Board of Directors.

Although the rate of donations and pledges declined during 1987, by January 1988, the total was over $200,000. In 1988 Roger Kolar and I joined the Board of Directors. The CEFT intensified its publicity efforts with press releases and a brochure designed for mass distribution. By the

Czech Chair Established at UT Austin

By March of 1990, a final agreement had been reached with the Birch Foundation and negotiations with the two universities were intensified.

Under the provisions of the new bylaws, Roger Kolar was elected Chairman of the Board, and Calvin Chervenka, Vice-Chairman. On May 1, 1990, Chairman Kolar and President Slcrivanek signed a letter of agreement with William H. Cunningham, President of the University of Texas at Austin, outlining the provisions for an endowed chair, which was to be named the "Texas Chair in Czech Studies," and which would represent a commitment to Czech language, literature, and culture, in perpetuity. With matching funds from UT, this Chair, the only one of its kind in the United States, was eventually funded for one million dollars. The agreement was ratified by the CEFT directors at a meeting in La Grange, on May 19, 1990. The University Board of Regents ratified the agreement at its meeting of June 14, 1990.

We were very happy to have Vice President Gene McBride and wife, Frances present at our meeting and fun day. District Seven Director Bob Bayer was there for dinner and then stayed a short while. Bob was recovering from knee replacement surgery.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 8, Weimar elects officers at November meeting The monthly meeting of Lodge 8, Weimar was held on Monday, November 27 at the Veteran's Hall in Weimar. President Jares called the meeting to order with everyone reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Sixteen members and guests were in attendance and all officers were present. A moment of silence was observed for our departed members.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and the treasurer's report was read and accepted.

The Christmas party was set for Tuesday, December 5 at Oakridge Restaurant in Schulenburg.

Election of officers was held and elected were as follows: President Leo Jares Vice President Rose Shumbera Secretary/Treasurer JoAnn Jares Fraternal Activities Coordinator Henrietta Veselka Birthday honorees for November were A.J. Shumbera and Leo Jares.

Wedding anniversary honorees were Nelson and Alice Jochen-50-years.

Dear Members, Through no fault of this writer nor the Editor and Director of Communication and his staff, the computer ate my letter of the 29th, but the following took place at the November meeting. After convening the meeting, opening the ceremonies and grace being given by Brother Glenn Kaminsky, the meeting recessed for the meal. After sufficient time for the meal, the meeting was re-convened and several motions were made and passed after reports were made.

on the list are the East Bernard E.M.S., East Bernard Volunteer Fire Department, the Matagorda, Wharton Counties Child Protective Services and East Bernard Boy Scout Troop were retained. Two were dropped and replaced with a large donation being given to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum.

All officers who served in year 2000 were re-elected with one minor change in one position, whereby Brother Glenn Kaminsky retained the position of Vice President, but gave up the additional position of Fraternal Activities Coordinator. Brother Everette Kaminsky was elected to the FAC position.

Fraternalist of the Year Sister Helen A. Kelner was elected as Fraternalist of the Year. Through her many jobs and community services, she was the only one who truly qualified.

Our new adult, Jessica Kelner, took part in the meeting with several motions and seconds.

Lodge 48, Beyersville presents results of "42" tournament It was another successful tournament with a lot of wonderful folks enjoying a day of fun and good food.

We appreciate very much the 44 players who put their other responsibilities aside and came to this year's tournament.

First place went to Edmond Tate of Taylor, who won 14 of the 15 games played. Second place went to Jimmy Turek of Pflugerville with 13 wins.

Third place was won by Donald Webb of Blue with 11 wins. And fourth place went to Florice Tydlacka of Dime Box with 10 wins. There were no ties this year so the tie breaker rule was not needed.

Players came from Taylor, Pflugerville, Ennis, Temple, Holland, Blue, Manor, Dime Box, Round Rock and Hutto. Everyone enjoyed and appreciated the sweets that were brought by Leona Stalmach, Della Greene, Christine Batla, Dorothy Markert, Annie Leshikar, Alice and Ruth Wuensche, Frances Tallas, Aleen Jaecks and Frank Klinkovsky. Thank you wonderful ladies and gent for your efforts.

Again, this year, the noon meal was turkey with dressing and giblet gravy, baked ham, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, slaw and peaches with choice of desserts. Those helping serve the meal were Leona Stalmach, Richard and Christine Batla and Denisse, Ruth Ann, Alice and Linda Wuensche.

Thanks also to District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky for his help. Thanks to the Supreme Lodge for the nice items donated for door prizes. Also many thanks to Wright Dist. Co. of Taylor and Intercraft Picture Frame Manufacuring Company for the other door prizes.

This being our tenth year of having the 42 tournament, I thought I would honor some of the folks who have supported the tournament over the years by listing those by the number of years they have attended. Our Progressive 42 Tournament began in 1990 at the Taylor SPJST Lodge 29. We have held eleven tournaments with a total of 115 people attending various tournaments.

Dorothy Markert has attended all eleven. Lillie Valis, Demetra and Gilbert Shiller attended 10 years.

Lillian Sakewitz, Lydia Janse and Catherine Holubec attended nine years.

Frances Tallas, Ronnie Honza, Homer Sakewitz, Ben and Annie Leshikar attended eight years. Aleen Jaecks, Johnny Rohlack and Della Greene attended seven years. Alvin and Frances Schimcek, Edmond Tate, Jerry Turek attended six years, Viola Moenhke, Joe Kohut, Jeny Tallas, Florice Tydlacka, Jimmy Turek and John Wuensche attended five years.

There were a number of folks who attended four, three and two years.

Lodge 88, Houston is now accepting applications for scholarships for the 2001school year. These forms can be picked up at the lodge office at 1435 Beall Street, Houston, 77008 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and returned to the Lodge 88 office by December 31, 2000.

To qualify, a student must be a member of Lodge 88 for a period of at least two years. the student must be paying local lodge dues and has to apply during the first semester of his senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of the year 2001.

Lodge 97, Placedo elects officers at December meeting Lodge 97 Placedo held its annual Christmas Party on Dec. 3 at the REA Building in Victoria.

Members enjoyed a noon meal of roast beef with the trimmings. A short meeting consisted of election of officers, youth club report given by Youth Leader Donna Vanek, and a District Six Barbecue Cookoff update. President Yvonne Garrett displayed a long list of lodge activities that we did in the year 2000, and proved that we were definitely a very active lodge.

"The Harbor Lights Choir was just fantastic," says Lodge 88, Houston First Vice President Marie Stayton. The group is associated with the Harbor Light Center, which provides assistance and outreach services for homeless and addicted men.

A white elephant gift exchange took place, and door prizes were awarded.

A visit from Santa Claus was a hit with the young and old alike. The kids gathered around him while he distributed gifts for everyone. Dana Vanek read from her book, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

Meeting Report

The monthly meeting of SPJST Lodge 133 was called to order at 1 p.m. by President Jarolyn Popp following a turkey luncheon and a presentation on the Czech Heritage Center.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited followed by the singing of "God Bless America" led by Don Netek. A moment of silence was held for all deceased members. All officers were present. There were 40 members present.

The minutes and financial reports of the September meeting were approved as read. Lucille Dlugosh gave the

Lodge 133, San Antonio member receives environmental planning award Robert Raymond Popp, III, a third-yeal student at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, was the recipient of the 2000 Dale C. Moll Student Robert Popp, Ill Activity Fund, presented at the CSI Convention and Exhibit in Atlanta in June.

Popp, whose major is environmental design, has been a San Antonio Chapter student member since 1996 and received a chapter scholarship in 1999. Robert, who is a member of SPJST Lodge 133, San Antonio, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Popp and Jarolyn Matula Popp from New Braunfels. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. and Evelyn Popp of San Antonio and Mr. and Mrs. Emil and Evelyn Matula of San Antonio.

The purpose of the Dale C. Moll Student Activity Fund is to promote awareness among college students of the vital role construction documents play in building design and construction and to encourage student involvement in CSI. Construction documents are a collection of paperwork from two sources: bidding requirements and contract documents. Together these documents form the project manual.

President Jarolyn Popp asked if the members wanted to have a Christmas luncheon. A motion was made by Emil Matula and seconded by Viola Kurtz that we hold a Christmas party and luncheon for the December meeting. A motion was made by Mary Popp and seconded by Evelyn Matula that ham be served. The luncheon will be served at 12:30 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend and to bring a side dish and dessert.

A motion was made by Evelyn Matula and seconded by Grace Rohan that Christmas packages be provided for the children.

Lucille Dlugosh, Don Netek and Louie Jasek volunteered to be on the nominating committee to select officers for 2001.

Scholarship Drive

Vice President Bill Pavliska reminded the members that the scholarship drive forms were available and he encouraged each member to make a donation. In addition, a motion was made Emil Matula and seconded by Louis Jasek that the lodge match the

donations raised for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Members can make their donations at the November or December meetings.

Attendance prize winners were Mary Popp, Joe Spacek and Bill Pavliska. Split the Pot winners were Bill Marsh and Pat Keller. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m followed by refreshments and bingo.

Members of Lodge 160, San Angelo, please note that our annual meeting will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2001. The meeting will again be held at St. Ambrose Church at Wall, Texas.

Nelson and Alice Jochen Celebrate Fiftieth Anniversary The children and grandchildren of Nelson and Alice Jochen, all of whom are members of SPJST Lodge 142, Houston, honored their parents with a 50th wedding anniversary celebration on November 4, 2000 at the American Legion Hall, Wolters Park in Schulenburg, Texas from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Guests enjoyed a brisket and sausage meal with all the trimmings prepared and served by Oakridge Restaurant of Schulenburg.

A three-tiered Italian cream cake and a chocolate cake featuring a farm scene with tractor, hay bales and a cow were served as desserts.

Serving the cake were granddaughters, Amanda Jochen McNiece, Jennifer Petter and Kristel Jochen. The honoree's children are Harlan Jochen of Navasota; Nellwyn Congratulations to Alice and Nelson Jochen who celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on November 4 with a celebration at the American Legion Hall.

Alice Jochen is reporter for Lodge 142, Houston.

Jochen Petter and husband, Ronald Petter of Pasadena and Karen Jochen Owens and husband, Jim Owens of Pasadena. They have three granddaughters and three grandsons Jason Petter, Jennifer Petter, Amanda Jochen McNiece and husband, John McNiece, Kristel Jochen; Garrett Owens and Gunnar Owens.

The Tri County Polka Band played for the dance following the dinner with Bobby and Sandra Hrachovy leading the Grand March.

Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Jochen were married on November 4, 1950 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Weimar, Texas.

At the conclusion of the party as all attendees were departing, they wished the honorees many more years with health and happiness.

172, Pasadena Christmas party December 17 Lodge

On Wednesday, November 15, Lodge 172 held its regular monthly meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Robert Mayfield followed by the Pledge of the Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

President Robert Mayfield called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm.

Robert read several letters he had received from the Supreme Lodge, including one, which stated that Jim Weist had taken the position of State Training Coordinator. Another letter reminding everyone about the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive.

President Mayfield asked if any one had thought of or had any suggestions of a fundraiser in order to enable us to make money to donate to Library, Archives and Museum.

Robert wished everyone with a birthday in the month of December a happy birthday.

After a short discussion a date, time and menu for the Christmas party was set. The party will be on Sunday December 17 from 2 p.m. till ?

Members are donating three turkeys.

One turkey will be fried and the other two will be roasted. There will be homemade dressing and all the trimmings. Members are asked to bring a covered dish. They are also asked to bring a gift for door prizes if they wish.

There will also be entertainment and a surprise visit from old Saint Nick.

Robert reminded everyone that a work day will be Monday, December 4; the Executive meeting will be on Wednesday, December 6; Christmas party is on Sunday, December 17; and last, but not least, the regular meeting is on Wednesday, December 20.

Door prizes were given. The meeing adjourned at 9 p.m.

183, Arlington posts October, November meeting minutes Lodge

The October meeting was on October 9, 2000 at the lodge. All officers were present. We did roll call, Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for all sick and departed members. The bar and kitchen reports were recited by President Adamek and the bingo and treasurer's reports were recited by Robert Sill as he is the person who composes those. We will sell any of the old tables to anyone who wishes to purchase one. They are $15 each. We accepted one new member and a new insurance representative.

We voted to donate $250 to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Grand Prairie, Texas so that they may purchase flowers and shrubs for the outside of their church.

Fraternalisit of the Year will be Dorothy Adamek. She is our Second Vice President who does a great deal of work for the lodge and she is a very sweet lady. We are lucky to have her with us. Congratulations, Dorothy!

As I write this letter, our dance that was held on November 4, 2000 has already passed by. I could not make it due to a family function, but I understand that it was a smashing success.

Let's have another next year! Of course, if we do, I will report it for you.

November Meeting The November meeting was held at the lodge on November 3, 2000. The meeting was called to order by our President, Johnny Adamek. The Piedge of Allegiance was said by the membership.

Second Vice President Dorothy Adamek read correspondence from Helen Sulak, a friend who is ill, in the form of a thank you card. Also a letter from Matthew Bagart, the pastor of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Grand Prairie, was read that thanked our lodge for the $250 donation for landscape plants and flowers we sent last month. A moment of silence was observed for sick and departed members and friends. Two officers were absent but excused. They were Pat Sill and Daniel Rosnovsky.

The minutes of the last meeting were read by Shelby Sill in place of Secretary Daniel Rosnovsky. They were approved as read.

Lodge 183, Arlington Financial Secretary Angeline Stiborek presents $250 check to Father Matthew Bagert for landscape plants and flowers.

The Bar and Kitchen reports were recited by our President, Johnny, but the treasurer's report and bingo reports were tabled until January because they were not completely understood by the membership. Everyone agreed that Robert Sill, who inputs the data for these reports, will interpret those when he returns from vacation. Secondly, the Christmas party on December 9 will be held in lieu of the December meeting.

No correspondence was sent to the Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ann Pustyovsky.

New Members Angeline Stiborek read the names of 12 new members for our lodge.

They are Johnathan Hollinger, Kenneth Dunham, Gina Jenkins, Jason Jenkins, Katie jenkins, Thomas Jenkins, Heather Jenkins, Christina Kral, Michael Hanchey, James Hanchey, Sheila Hanchey and Windy Hanchey. We had five terminations.

Jerry Mikus was presented with his 50-year pin.

Tom Soos has agreed to nail down the railing on the outside of the building. The hamburger grill has been closed since November 1, 2000 and will remain closed until further notice for game nights. Bids for hall cieanup and smoke eater cleaning will open up on December 31, 2000.

Anyone is welcome to submit a bid for either of these items.

A motion was carried to allow a $25 increase for Johnny Adamek and Dorothy Adamek to buy groceries and run errands for the lodge.

New Business Election of officers for 2001 were held. All of the officers for 2000 will stay the same for 2001. They were voted and decided by acclamation.

Sausage sandwiches will be served and everyone is asked to bring a covered dish. The lodge will donate $800 to a charity on behalf of the dance the lodge held on November 4, 2000.

After family night was decided on, the meeting was closed and we will not meet formally until January, 2001.

Concluding Message From Lodge 183 I just wanted to share a special message to everyone, especially our members. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and a happy New Year.

You've done great! Thanks to all of the workers who participate on game nights. We are a success because of you! Our customers love Lodge 183 and have for the many years that we have been operating. Expression In Memory of Faye Fowler Mares of Sympathy Faye Fowler Mares, age 86 of Austin, died Thursday, November 23, 2000. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 155 in Austin, a member of Central Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She graduated from Seton School of Nursing and worked as a nurse in Austin for 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Mares in 1971.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Louise Mares, of Austin; brother and sister in-law, Weldon Fowler and wife, Maria of Magnolia, Texas; sister-in-law, Vera Fowler of Bastrop; and many nieces and nephews.

Gravesite services were at 2 p.m., Monday, November 27 at Capitol Memorial Park Cemetery with the Reverend Sallie Watson officiating.

Those of Lodge 155, Austin attending the service were John and Laverne Hejl, Marianna Wood and Ginny Prasatik. Those visiting the funeral home were the above as well as Ted and Nel Marek and Clarence and Doris Boriski. A flower spray for the funeral was given by SPJST Lodge 155 thus inscribed on the ribbon.

In Memory of Augustina "Gustie" Kudelka Augustina "Gustie" Kudelka, age 91, passed away at her home in Alvin, Texas on Monday, November 13, 2000.

She was born to Frank and Annie Kubin, January 4, 1909 in Bila Hora, Texas. The family moved to Alvin in 1912.

In 1926, Gustie married Joe Kudelka. They resided in Galveston, Texas for about 20 years before moving back to Alvin. Mrs. Kudelka was a member of the SPJST lodge and an avid bowler, winning numerous trophies. She was dedicated to her family, her home and her yard.

She was a member of Lodge 172, Pasadena.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe. They had no children.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews; many friends and loving care givers.

Visitation was held Wednesday, November 15 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 16 at 10:30 a.m. in the Froberg Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Confederate Cemetery in Alvin beside her husband.

The officers and membership of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje express their sympathy for our departed lodge brother, VINCENT DETTLING, 86, of Hillje, who died Thursday, November 23, 2000.

He was born July 30, 1914 in Brazoria County to the late Charles and Helen Gabrial Dettling. He was a retired farmer and a member of KJT Society, SPJST and St. Andrew's Catholic Church.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara Holub of LaSalle and Shirley Wagner; sister, Mary Erdelt of Wharton; brothers, Johnnie Dettling of Wharton, Willie Dettling of El Campo and Charlie Dettling of Houston; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by wife, Henrietta Sliva Dettling; daughter, Delores Dettling; parents; and brothers, Frank Dettling, Mike Dettling and Tony Dettling.

Visitation was on Friday, November 24 at noon at Triska Funeral Home Chapel.

A Rosary was recited at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 25 at the St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Hillje.

Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 25 at the church with the Reverend Clement Quainoo officiating.

Burial was at St. John's Cemetery in Taiton. Triska Funeral Home, El Campo, was in charge of arrangements.

Alene was a grocery store clerk and had been employed by Marek's Grocery Store in East Bernard for many years.

Mrs. Kortis was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joseph Kortis.

Emil was born on February 9, 1909 in Bohemia which was a small Czech settlement on the Merton road. His parents were Vaclav and Mary Kaucky Kvasnicka. He was very

active in Lodge 49 holding various offices through the years.

Emil is survived by his sister, Emma Havlak and her husband, Emil of Ballinger; brother, Elmer of San Antonio; a nephew, Carlos Dusek and his wife, Linda of Midkiff; two nieces, Mary Ann Havlak Johnson of Dallas and Pam Kvasnicka Furth of Val Verde; great nieces and nephews, Stacey and Skyler Dusek, Father Joseph Johnson, Tonya Johnson Myck and Courtney Furth.

Monday at Aderhold Funeral Home with Minister Sam Ainistrong officiating. Burial followed at Bold Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Janek was born January 2, 1923, in Penelope, the son of John and Juliana (Grossman) Janek. He married Bonnie J. Sealey June 25, 1946 in West. He worked for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad at the Bellmead yard for over 36 years before he retired in January of 1983.

He was a member of Elm Mott Church'of Christ. He was also a member of the National Association of Veteran Railway Employees and SPJST Lodge 54 in West. Mr. Janek served his country in the United States Army during WWII with the 571st Bomb Squadron before being discharged in 1945.

He was preceded in death by one son, David L. Janek who died September 1, 1987; and two brothers, Ben Janek and Ernest Janek.

He was survived by his wife of 54 years, Bonnie Janek of Elm Mott; two sons, Stan Janek, Jr. of Fontana, California and Benny W. Janek of Birome; one brother, Lionel Janek of Waco; three grandchildren, Kristen Renee Janek of Waco, Stan Janek, III of Portland,Oregon and Lance Ondrej, of Fort Worth; one great-grandson, Lance Holden Ondrej; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Community Hospice. The family would also like to give special thanks to Linda Halamik for her love, concern and care.

In Memory of Orley Hall Orley Victor (Vic) Hall, 74, of Fredericksburg died Friday, September 22, 2000 at Hill Country Memorial Hospital.

The body was cremated and the family had a private memorial serOrley Hall vice at a later date.

Hall was born on February 4, 1926 in Smackover, Arizona, the son of Arnett Doy Hall and Josephine McGehee Hall. He married Bettye Sheridan in Leonard on July 23, 1954 and she survives.

Hall served in the U.S. Navy and attended Baylor University where he received his law degree in 1953. He began his practice of law in Cleburne, served as Assistant City Attorney in Waco and was the only judge in McLennan County to serve on four levels.

After being appointed Justice of the Peace, he was elected to the county Court-At-Law to the 54th District Court and to the Tenth Court of Appeals.

He also served as a part-time instructor at the Baylor University School of Law from 1959 to 1969. He retired in 1990, but continued to work as visiting judge until his move to Fredericksburg in 1998.

Brother Hall was a member of SPJST Lodge 54, West.

In addition to his wife, Hall is survived by two daughters and two sons, Lisa Jo Hall of Fredericksburg, Brian Sheridan Hall of Pleasanton, California, Keith Arnett Hall of Heidelberg, Germany and Nancy Edith Hall of Dallas. Also surviving are four grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Ellen Russell of Cleburne.

A rosary was recited 11 a.m. Friday, September 29, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:15 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with the Reverend Ed Karasek as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, provided by the V.F.W. Post 4819 of West.

The family received visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Steinocher was born May 19, 1932 in McLennan County, the son of Robert and Lillian Steinocher. He graduated from West High School in 1950. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He married Nellie Marlene Wynne on February 15, 1980 in West.

Joe worked as a Warehouse Manager for the Hack Branch Distributing Company in Waco for over 40 years. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 4819 and American Legion in West. He was a member of • SPJST Lodge 54, West. He was also a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lillian Steinocher.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene Steinocher of West; four sons, Mark Barton and his wife, Mary of Spring, Paul Barton, David Barton and Stephen Barton and his wife, Patti, all of West; one daughter, Paula Simpson and her husband, Casey of Waxahachie; mother in-law, Lucille Wynne of West; seven grandchildren, Rachel Barton, Devin Barton, Jessica Barton, Joshua Barton, Mason Barton, Lauren Simpson, Breanna Simpson; and several other relatives.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of your choice.

Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

Mrs. Hejl was born in Seaton to John Hurta and Louise Simmank. She married Albert Hejl on July 22, 1936.

He preceded her in death. She lived in Rosebud most of her life, until moving to Cameron six and one half years ago.

She was a retired dress inspector for Rosebud Dresses. She was a 55-year member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton.

Survivors are a son, Albert Chip Hejl, Jr. of Crawford; four daughters, Barbara Hejl and Helen Belson, both of Temple and Lorraine Moore and Kathy Terry, both of Cameron; three Sisters, Lillian Schmidt and Lorraine Motl, both of Houston and Viola Doskocil of League City; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation was at the funeral home.

Mr. Mucha died Monday, November 20, 2000 at a Temple nursing home.

He was born in Bell County to John H. and Vlasta Havel Mucha. He was retired from the Veterans Administration. He married Emma Gerick on November 18, 1930 in Caldwell. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton for 50 years.

Survivors are his wife, Emma Mucha of Temple; one son, Raymond Mucha of Temple; three sisters, Anne Odstrcil and Frances Anderson, both of Bryan and Lorene Hager of Pasadena; one brother, Joe Mucha of Houston; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Zabcik, 83 of Tyler, Texas at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2000 at Burks-Walker-'Tippit Chapel, Tyler, Texas with Dr. Ray Bristol and Reverend Bennie Bradlick officiating.

Private family graveside services preceded the memorial services. Mr. Zabcik passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2000 in Tyler.

Mr. Zabcik was born to the late Joe Frank and Hermina Zabcik on September 27, 1917 at home in Red Ranger community near Temple in Bell County. Mr. Zabcik grew up working with his parents on the family farm.

Mr. Zabcik married Fay Inez McCarty on March 21, 1943. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II reaching the rank of staff Sergeant. Mr. Zabcik lived in Tyler since 1946 and until his death.

Mr. Zabcik retired from Tyler Pipe after 28 years, working as a maintenance supervisor. He was a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge 53 of the Free Ancient and Accepted Masons; a member of First Christian Church of Tyler where he served as a Deacon; a former member of the Ocker Brethren Church at Zabcikville, Texas; and a 50-

year member of Lodge 24, Cyclone.

His hobby was woodcrafting. He also enjoyed traveling.

Mr. Zabcik is survived by his wife of 57 years, Fay Zabcik of Tyler; son, Wayne Zabcik of Garland; daughters and sons in-law, Gayland and Ronnie Skaggs of Round Rock and Kathy and Steve Vredenburg of Grand Prairie; grandchildren, Ginnie and husband, Doug Colbert, Kevin Zabcik, Eric Zabcik, Belinda and husband, Travis Kent, Jason Vredenburg and Amanda and husband, Mike Helmke; greatgrandchildren, William Colbert and Alyssa Helmke; and sister and brother in-law, Florence and Ray Mucha of Temple.

She was born in Cyclone to Henry and Emilie Voltin Hoelscher. She lived most of her life in Cyclone. She married Arnold Bartek on November 25, 1937. He preceded her in death on December 6, 1978.

She was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone and was also a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She was also preceded in death by a son, James Bartek.

Survivors include son, Clarence Bartek of Mount Pleasant; daughter, Helen Ranly of Westphalia; brother, Leo Hoelscher of Wichita Falls; sister, Mary Schneider of Temple; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club reports on Peanut Festival The second weekend in October Floresville had their annual Peanut Festival. Saturday morning was the Parade. Our lodge designed a float and rode in the parade. The float was decorated by the youth in red, white and blue. We hung peanuts around the trailer and tied balloons also. There was a good turn out for the parade because the weather was nice.

Post Parade Activities After the parade, the youth helped sell peanut brittle in the booth. At the festival, there were many activities going on including a magician, puppet show and carnival. That night, the Floresville Fire Department hosted a street dance.

One of the benefits that the SPJST makes available to its members is a competitive scholarships program. The SPJST Supreme Lodge will be accepting applications for the year 2001 SPJST Scholarships until December 31, 2000.

An applicant must be a qualified member of the SPJST to apply. To be a qualified member, the applicant must hold a valid SPJST insurance policy for at least one year prior to the date of the application.

If you wish to apply, you may request an application by writing to:

NFCA accepting scholarship applications SPJST recently eceived word of a new competitive scholarship program being offered by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), the nationwide trade association for America's Fraternal Benefit Societies. Winning applicants will be eligible to receive up to $7,000 for college tuition costs. The NFCA's Youth Scholarship Program is dedicated to supporting higher education, encouraging youth volunteerism and promoting the fraternal benefit system. First and foremost, it recognizes a student's demonstrated commitment to performing volunteer service to the community at an exemplary level.

NFCA intends to award up to $50,000 in undergraduate scholarships for use during the 2001-2002 academic year.

Awards will be made to graduating high school seniors based on demonstrated commitment to volunteer activities. Six Volunteer Scholars will receive up to $7,000 each and eight Honorable Mention recipients will receive up to $1,000 each. Scholarship payments cover actual costs for tuition, books and fees for the freshman year and are not renewable. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship, one must: 1.Be a graduating high school senior; 2. Be a verified member of one of the NFCA's member societies; 3. Plan to enroll full-time in a four-year undergraduate degree program; 4. Plan to pursue the degree at an accredited four-year college or university; 5. Have ACT or SAT scores in the top 50 percent of the national norm; 6. Have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average based on a 4.0 scale or be in the top 50 percent in class rank.
