Heritage, faith come together at Czech Heritage Day observance By Carolan Wishall

and faith came C together on October 28 in melodious notes and sacred worship when a Polka Mass was celebrated at Czech Heritage Day held at SPJST Lodge 24 in Cyclone. About 1,000 people gathered in the hall to celebrate their common culture, worship in collective faith and remember that God had been good to them in their new land. The faithful stood to honor God and His love for man and sang the words to a song backed by the strains of polka (Editor's Note: This article originally appeared in the Sunday, October 29 issue of the Temple Daily Telegram and is reprinted with permission.)

music. Vrazels' Polka Band provided the music for the Mass and led the audience in the worship songs. "God is one, Three in One, Rich, compassionate . . . God is love, Endless love, Unconditional and true . .." sang the faithful. The Reverend Louis Pavlicek of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple was the celebrant for the Mass. Special guest was the Reverend Pavel Smyd of the Czech Republic who is visiting St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple until December. Co-celebrants were the Reverend Walter-Matus and the Reverend Sylvester Fuchs. "I asked Father Walter how much of the Mass was going to be in Czech," Pavlicek said to those gathered in the hall. "He said, 'It all depends on who comes.' (Continued on page 6.)

Czech Heritage Day celebrants settle in for an evening that included a polka mass, sausage dinner, music by the Vrazels' Polka Band and fireworks display. Held in conjunction with national "Make a Difference Day," Lodge 24, Cyclone organizers received a $1,000 check from Wal-Mart

which they donated to the SF.JST Library, Archives and Museum.
