Is There Any New Business?

Good Things Come to Those Who Plan Establishing an action plan for your local lodge is like learning to walk. It takes practice — maybe stumbling a few times — and balance. But once you get it down, your options for growth increase substantially. The alternative — operating without a clearly defined plan of action — is like going on a bus trip with no destination in mind.

Nobody knows for sure where you're going or when you'll get there. It affects the whole character of the trip. People get anxious. People start to worry.

People are ready to get off at the next stop ...

Setting goals and objectives for a local lodge is a very basic management task, yet it's a topic that is seldom addressed. It's easy enough to understand why. There are a lot of pressing issues facing lodges these days. Still, as we get together in our lodge halls and meeting places this time of year, it's essential to dedicate some time to addressing the fundamentals and make sure that everyone is playing according to the same game plan.

Here's a simple exercise that you can do at your November lodge or trustees meeting: Without going into a lot of detail, ask everybody — even the young people in attendance — to write down what they believe to be the goals and objectives of your local lodge.

Based on the results, you will learn one of two things: If you find general agreement in the responses, it probably means that you're on the right track. If you get as many different answers as people, it could mean that you need to spend some time defining your lodge's purpose and then communicating this information to your members. A lodge will continue to grow and prosper only so long as there remains a vital cause to stimulate and unite it.

Although it will vary from lodge to lodge, there must be an overriding idealism that brings unity to all members and moves them in the direction of an urgent goal. The flow of history has always been directed by ideas and ideals.

In planning for the future, a good place to start is to ask yourself where do you want your lodge to be at the end of 2001? Look beyond next month's utility bills, property tax assessments and liability insurance payments and seriously ask yourself, "What greater good are we trying to achieve within our lodge and within the community?"

To those who will be elected to serve as lodge officers and trustees in 2001, grab the bull by the horns — good naturedly, of course — and set your sights high. Don't limit your lodge's success to a low level of achievement just because "it hasn't been done before." And when you wish, be specific with your goals. Commit them to writing and then communicate them with your members — especially those members who don't regularly come to the meetings. Who knows? Some of them might just start attending!

The second thing an effective action plan requires is documentation.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't like paperwork; however, this is one exception I'm glad to make: Every lodge can benefit from a written game plan with goals that are clearly spelled out along with steps or timetables for achieving them. It is very important to spell out what is going to be done, who is going to do it and when it's going to get done. Otherwise, it may not happen.

If you have been secretly wishing for a major improvement in your lodge, new and inviting fraternal activities — and whatever else your heart desires — commit in 2001 and be prepared to spell out your goals. And, when the presiding officer asks, "Is there any new business?" be ready to plant the seeds of hope and progress.

Our lodges and Society can be where we want it to be in the year 2001 and beyond. It can, provided that we care enough to map out a course of action and then let nothing stop us from achieving our goals.

Free Concert This Saturday The youth symphony Primavera is one of the top orchestras in the Czech Republic. These young musicians have performed throughout Europe and will be touring Texas this fall, including a visit to Temple, co-sponsored by the SPJST and Temple College. Primavera is a classical string orchestra and is represented by 25 students, ages 12 through 18, of the primary music and arts school Na Strezine, Hradec Kralove. The group will be performing at the Temple College Auditorium this Saturday, November 4 at 6 p.m. Admission to the concert is free. Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood invites workers and families to luncheon Hi! Looking forward to all of you Lodge 6, Cottonwood workers and families coming out to our Appreciation Day Luncheon that will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 5. It will be held at the lodge hall.

Come out and enjoy a good meal, then have fun all afternoon with the folks at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. After a very short meeting — if any — by President Al Soukup, we can all enjoy door prizes, games or just good fellowship with snacks afterwards.

8, Weimar reports on October meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 8, Weimar held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, evening October 23, 2000 at the Veterans Memorial Hall, Weimar, at 7 p.m. with 17 members and guests in attendance.

President Leo Jares opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for the recently departed members Libby Rosenbaum, Ida Krizak and Lillie Koslowsky.

nonprofit organization with its major goal to preserve the Czech heritage by teaching Czech history and traditions.

Tax deductable donations under a 501(c)3 organization are being accepted to fund this museum expansion.

The follow new members were accepted into the lodge. Austin John Bargas, Betty Cooper, Jonathan Perez and Becky Jares; Eugene and Henrietta Veselka of Schulenburg were accepted by transfer.

Preident Jares reported on the District Barbecue Cookoff held at Victoria on October 14. Lodge 8 set up and manned the prize drawing booth which was staffed by lodge members—the Veselkas and the Jareses with the prize drawing much attention to the barbecue cookers and other activities associated with the occasion.

The Weimar Veterans Memorial Hall was selected as the future meeting site with its location and available facilities. The Christmas party date was discussed and is planned for the first week of December at Oakridge Restaurant in Schulenburg.

Those having birthdays in attendance for October were Mary Ann Roznovak and Franklin Farek. The anniversary celebrants for October in attendance were George and Earline Janik and Eugene and Henrietta Veselka with each couple being happily married 31 years; the FareksFranklin and Barbara married four years.

The other members October anniversary were Earline and Elmer Muenster. All celebrants received recognition and were sung to by all in attendance.

Evening Program For the evening program, Jimmy Myers of Weimar gave a program about the youth boot camp located at Eagle Lake, where he works as a teacher employed by the correctional unit, a privately run facility and associated with Colorado County and Rice Consolidated Independent School District. A judge sentences troubled kids to the boot camp—many are school drop-outs and many do not know math at the algebra level. Their minds have been messed up from doing drugs. Mr. Myers is one of six teachers at the facility which presently houses some 150 youth doing time and trying to rehibilitate due to approximately 80 percent of the kids being housed due to drugs.

Mr. Myers gave a very interesting program of daily activities. He stated there are both boys and girls at the facility, but they are kept seperate.

There are no hardened criminals at this unit as trouble makers are transferred to other units throughout the state. He stated the average age for the young people is 14 to 15, but there was one

child 12 years of age sent to the camp doing drugs with her mother. The normal stay is nine months and kids are sent there from all over the state.

Mr. Myers stated the "kids" refer to the teachers as the "good guys" and the Drill Instructors as the "bad guys" because disipline is the DI's training, which is similar to military boot camp.

With the interest shown by those in attendance to this program, it was considered a "barn burner." And even with the knowledge that drug problems exist, the average person is unaware that such a facility exists within the county.

The next meeting is on Monday, November 27 at 7 p.m. at Weimar Veterans Memorial Hall with the election of officers and planning of the Christmas party.

15, Buckholts invites one and all to November 19 barbecue dinner fund raiser Lodge

Buckholts SPJST Lodge 15 will have a barbecue chicken dinner fund raiser on November 19, 2000.

Plates will consist of 1/2 barbecue chicken, beans, potatoes, salad, slaw, cobbler and tea for $6 a plate. Serving time will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Members, we need extra help.

Our next meeting will be on Monday night, November 13, 2000 at 6:30 p.m. Election of officers will be elected for the year 2001. Members, please come to this meeting so we can keep operating this lodge. If we do not get extra help and workers, we may consider selling this hall. We do not want to and I don't think the members do either.

Dear Members, A Thanksgiving Day meal is planned for the November monthly meeting on the 12th. It will start at 12:30 p.m. and will recess for the meal after opening ceremony and grace. It all will be held in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street.

The meeting was called to order, the minutes read and approved. At this point, the Thanksgiving Day meal was brought forward and it was decided to have a hot meal to commemorate the day. Also, it was agreed to start both

Wednesday, November 1, 2000—VESTNIK/5 November and December meetings at 12:30 p.m. so the meals could be served hot. There was no final decision made as to the fare for the December Christmas meal.

Kill Those Germs in Your Kitchen • 1. Wash your hands often with warm water and soap for 20 seconds.

1 pound Velvachol 8 ounces glycerin (These two ingredients may be purchased at your local pharmacy.)

3 tablespoons baby oil 3 cups distilled water Mix the Velvachol, glycerin and baby oil in a food mixer until fluffy.

Add water slowly. (Add perfume if you prefer a scent.) Place in jars or pump lotion bottles.

Makes 2 1/2 quarts. Costs $25 to make. You may substitute some of the water with aloe vera juice.

Arrange one can of refrigerated biscuits (10 count) on plate. Brush with melted oleo. Put dent in center. Take one carton of vanilla snack-ready pudding. Put in two teaspoons of poppy seed mix. Put in dents of biscuits and bake a little longer than plain biscuits.

You may sprinkle a little sugar on them or drizzle with powered sugar (You can also use jam or fruit or lemon pudding for filling).

On October 15, 2000, the SPJST, Lodge 81, Needville, met for its monthly meeting. A nice group of people showed up on this sunny afternoon. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my daughter, Lynnette Newman, for taking notes for me. I wasn't able to attend because I decided to visit my other two daughters in "Aggieland" for a couple of days.

At 12 noon, a delicious meal of baked and fried chicken was served.

Thanks to all the wonderful cooks we have in our lodge. I would like to thank Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready for us.

Lodge Contributes to LAM Under new business, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel suggested we get a $100 picnic table to set on the patio outside so smokers would have some place to go. The Walzel's said they would donate the table and this motion was approved. We also voted on donating $100 to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. Mr.

Thanks to all of you for making this trip so enjoyable. And many thanks again to Ellen.

Helen and King Hegwood, my husband, Calvin and I, went to New York to King's reunion of his ship the U.S.S. Oriskany in Oriskany, New York. We also went to Canada. We had a wonderful trip and were gone a little over three weeks. We went to so many places, but the most memorable were Niagara Falls and New York City—the falls were beautiful. Also, the Clooneys, Dona and Press, went to Press' reunion of the LST 18 which was held in Galveston, Texas. There were people from Ohio, Minnesota and Montana. They had a wonderful time, too.

King's niece, Ann Johnson, passed away on Monday, October 16 after surgery. The services were in Altus, Oklahoma. She would have been 57 this October. Helen and King drove to Oklahoma for the services. Ed Miculka's grandson was killed tragically in a motorcycle accident. He was just 36 years old and leaves a wife and two small children. Both of these incidents are tragic and unexpected.

Please, remember the families in your prayers.

Happy Anniversary!

Ruth and Bob Martinak made a 50th wedding anniversary trip to Colorado, Utah, Oregon and. Nevada. They visited a copper mine, went to Crater Lake and the Redwood National Forest and gambled in several casinos. They visited all the new hotels in Las Vegas, then found their way back to Fayetteville. It was an enjoyable trip but home always looks good after 12 days.

My husband, Calvin and I have a new grand-nephew born on July 26 to Susan and Randy Hageman of Hallsville, Texas. He weighed in at nine pounds and was 20 1/4 inches long—a big boy.

We will have Czech Day on October 29. We expect to have a great time

The admission into the ballroom is $5 for adults and children under 12 are free. The Lodge 88 Orchestra will play and the Choral Group will sing. A proclamation by the Major's office is expected at 1 p.m. and crowning of Mr. and Mrs. Czech Day will be at 4:45 p.m. plus a parade of costumes at 5 p.m. Dancing entertainment will be by Central Texas Sounds.

We had our monthly meeting on Monday, October 9. I wasn't able to take the minutes of the meeting, but Jo Ann Buri was kind enough to take them for me.

She also sent the minutes to Brian Vanicek for publication, which I really appreciated.

I don't have the list of people who celebrated birthdays or anniversaries in October. I'll try to get them in next time. I'm sure those having anniversaries furnished the drinks after the meeting.

Josephine Pflughaupt, sitting in for Guide Helen Hegwood, reported there were 78 members present and the group sang "Happy Birthday" to those celebrating birthdays. Door prizes were won by Jeanette Bender, Tom Haney, Bob Martinak, Johnny Broz and Joy Caka.

Entrance Fee: Over 13, $2 per person per day; 65 and over $1 per day per person. Passport is $50 a year and is good at any Texas state park for all persons in the car.

All campers are required to check in at the park headquarters.

No problem for late arrivals, gate is always open.

No pets allowed in lodge, lodge area, or cabins and must be on lease at all times. ublic consumption or display of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.

Gathering of firewood is prohibited. Fires may be banned due to dry conditions, check with park ranger.

Camp will accommodate 96 people.

Cabins have bunk beds with mattresses.

• All nine cabins have heat and air conditioning. No assignments.

• Each camper will be responsible for cooking and clean up for one meal, sign up will be posted.

180, Burleson New Year's Eve ticket prices set Lodge

SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson held its regular scheduled meeting on October 4, 2000.

Lodge minutes, reports and business were taken care of.

Highlights of the meeting include a discussion of the upcoming New Year's Eve dance. The hiring of the band for that night will be based on who has the lower fee to play. The price of admission to the dance will be $25 a couple and $13 a single person if tickets are purchased in advande.

Admission will be $15 a person when purchased at the door on the night of the dance.

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 1, 2000 It was agreed that gum will no longer be sold at rentals. There has been a problem with gum ending up on the dance floor and not in the trash cans. Gum will continue to be sold at our regularly held dance each month.

Thanks go to Joe Hurtik, Sr. and Paul Hurtik for replacing the electric eye to the neon SPJST sign on the front of the building. Now, we have light!

Lodge 180 would like to wish a get well to Carmon Babina who hurt her knee this month and Ella Hilcher who has not been feeling well. We hope you mend soon. We miss you at the meetings.

How could we have forgotten? Ella Hilshcer—we wish you a belated September birthday. Hope your birthday was a good one and that you have many more to come.

reports on October meeting SPJST Lodge 186 in Caldwell held its monthly meeting on October 10. The meeting was called to order by President Luksa. The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Margaret Haisler. A moment of silent prayer was observed in honor of Jake Garbus and J.D. Vavra. The minutes of the September meeting were read and approved.

Two new members were welcomed into the lodge. The lodge voted to

donate $60 to the Czech Heritage Society for a new sign.

The bingo report was given and approved. The election of new officers is scheduled for Tuesday, November 14.

The Christmas party was scheduled for December 12.

Stephenville reports on October meeting Dear Members, Lodge 204 had its regular meeting on Monday October 16 at the Senior Citizens Center in Hico.

One of the things discussed was the fact that we need to have the next meeting on Tuesday, November 21 at 7 p.m. because a conflict in school duties of our president and will need to discuss meeting dates at our next meeting to see if we need to change the day of that we meet.

We also discussed a possible Christmas party and more needs to be done on that at the next meeting.

We would like to hear from more of the members to get more input into our meetings and be able to plan future activities and think about the election of officers in December. If you want to have new officers or continue with the current officers, we need to hear from you.

I have been busy the last two weeks getting ready for the American Legion District Convention for District 17 that took place in Hamilton Post on Saturday, October 21. Now I am planning for the upcoming Veteran's Day annual anvil shoot on November 11. because some of the men wanted to let everyone know that the war was over.

They gathered the local gin and wanted to blow the whistle, but the person responsible for firing up the gin had a few too many drinks the night before and forgot to fire up the boiler. They had no steam to blow the whistle. But the local blacksmith had two anvils and some black powder. They turned one upside down and filled the hole in the bottom with black powder and set the other one on top and then heated a long steel rod with a wooden handle red hot and touched it to the powder and fired the anvils with a loud bang to wake all the people in Hamilton to let them know that the war was over.

That has been done every year since then and is one of the biggest events that the American Legion Post 222 has each year.

If you have never been to one, you need to come and see for yourself. You need to arrive at the post about 4:30 a.m. because the first shot will be fired at 5 a.m. It takes place at 5 a.m. Central Standard Time because as that coincides with it being 11 a.m. in Europe. The peace treaty was signed on the eleventh month, the eleventh day and the eleventh hour in France.

After the anvil shoot, we will serve breakfast of sausage, biscuits and gravy and socialize. Then those who have to go to work, can be on their way. Hope to see you there. Keep smiling!

Circle reports on October meeting The Ennis Sewing Circle met October 12, 2000. Twenty seven members were present. Jerry Koubek was our only guest.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Carolyn Foit Liu, daughter of Sister Doris Foit.

Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes. Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as read.

Sunshine Report Eleanora Pelzel sent a get well card to Sister Hattie Moucka and Sister Dorothy Sherrell. "Happy Birthday" was sung to the October birthday celebrants. Contributions received were a memorial for Carolyn Foit Liu by Sister Libbie Elsik; Jerry Koubek gave a donation; Sister Lucy Honza gave a donation for having her quilt quilted; Sister Liddie Pavelka - table napkins; Sister Anne Kostak - Halloween cups; Sister Adell Cikanek - plates. Sister Eleanora Pelzel sewed the border for the quilt quilted that is to be given away at our Christmas meeting. Members only $1. A quilt will be quilted for Sister Hattie Moucka at our November meeting. Sister Lucy Honza thanked the Circle for quilting her quilt. Dorothy and Wesley Prachyl flew to Michigan, to celebrate their grandson, Andrew Cole's, third birthday. Congratulations! Harriet Ann Roberts, daughter of Alice Roberts, was one of 134 students inducted into Phi Theta Kappa (Honor Society) at Tarrant County College, Southeast Campus, on October 17, 2000.

In Memory of Lydia Peters

The officers and membership of Lodge 24, Cyclone, express their sincere sympathy for our departed lodge sister, HELEN AGNES SPANHEL. Services for Helen Agnes Spanhel, 67, of Temple were held Friday September 22, 2000 at Seaton Brethren Church with the Reverend Al Newby officiating.

Burial was at Seaton Cemetery.

Mrs. Spanhel died at her residence Wednesday, Septemer 20, 2000.

She was born in Temple to George and Elizabeth Svajda Malina. She was a lifelong resident of Bell County. She married Miro Spanhel in Temple on June 1, 1953. Prior to her retirement she was employed at Green's Sausage House in Zabcikville. She was a member of Seaton Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Miro Spanhel and a son, Gary Spanhel.

Survivors are son, Jimmy Spanhel and wife, Fawn; two granddaughters, Lisa and Tonya.

Our lodge Sister, Helen, was active at the lodge always bringing baked goods to all occasions until she got sick. We will miss her at our lodge, May our departed sister rest in peace.

Lydia Peters, 80, of Carmine died September 26 in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham.

Funeral services were held Thursday, September 28 at 2 p.m. in Martin Luther Lutheran Church of Carmine with the Reverend Paul Bohot officiating. Burial was in the LaBahia Cemetery near Burton. Born December 10, 1919 in Washington, Texas, she was the daughter of Fritz, Sr. and Meta (Roese) Graeber. She married Arnold Peters January 1, 1939 in Friedens United Church of Christ in Washington.

She was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church of Carmine, member of the WELCA, member of the Sons of Hermann Lodge 131 and member of the SPJST Lodge 179.

Survivors include husband, Arnold Peters of Carmine; son and daughter-inlaw, Arnold Jr. and Janette Peters of Brenham; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Ronnie Roemer of Brenham; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Menetta Wied of Austin and Mary Ann Bathe of Houston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz, Sr. and Meta Roese Graeber and brothers, Fritz Graeber Jr., Richard Graeber and R.T. Graeber.

Mrs. Sydonie Skrabanek died Friday October 6, 2000 in a Temple Hospital.

She was born in Thompson Community, Bell County. She was a farmer and a food service worker at Rogers School. She was a member of Seaton Brethren Church and SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone.

She is preceded in death by a husband John Skrabanek; son, Raymond Skrabanek and a daughter, LaVerne Cabla.

Survivors are son, Lawrence Skrabanek of Rogers; daughter, Linda Schneider of Rogers; brother, Woodrow Marek of Temple; sister, Carmen Skrabanek of Temple; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Burial followed in the Salado Cemetery. Mollie passed away Saturday, October 7, 2000 at her residence.

She was born on June 25, 1947 in Goose Creek, Texas to Tommie H. and Gladys L. Kosina Lostak. Mrs. Gamer graduated from Danbury High School in 1965 and Massey Business College.

She married Wayne Garner on March 16, 1968 in Angleton, Texas. Mr.s Garner worked as a secretary for Dr. Curtis Beaird, Vice President of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. She was also a member of the Salado Methodist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Post 4008 in Belton and SPJST Lodge 139, Danbury.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Gladys Kosina Lostak.

Survivors include husband, Wayne Garner of Salado; daughters, Charity Barker, Tera Jackson, April Danbury and Mollie K. Garner, all of Salado; father, Tommie Lostak of Danbury;

brothers, Lonnie Lostak of Danbury and Harold Lostak of Sugarland; sister, Lorenda Lostak Baldwin of Danbury; grandchildren, Whitney and Jorden Danbury of Salado.

All survivors are members of SPJST Lodge 139, Danbury.

Pallbearers were Monte Baldwin, Troy Baldwin, Tommie McLane Lostak, Jeremy Dickerson, Brian Remkes and Dean Honchul.

RHODES, HI, 77, of Crosby, who passed away at Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston after a brief illness. He was born January 3, 1923 in Crosby, Texas to Charles and May McNally, Jr. Charles was in the Marine Corps during W.W. II and worked in sales all his life. He has always been very active in his community and belonged to several organizations such as Knights of Columbus, VFW, the American Legion and many others. In 1995, he received the Citizen of the Year award. His parents and one sister precede Charles in death.

Charles is survived by his wife, Dorothy Rhodes of Crosby; two daughters, Meredith Rhodes of Houston, and Kimberly Manship and husband, Richard of Baton Rouge, LA; son, Charles Rhodes, IV; one granddaughter, Amada Goss of Baton Rouge, LA; many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 19, 2000, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crosby. Burial followed at the Houston V.A. National Cemetery in Houston. Visitation was on Monday, September 18, 2000, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sterling White Chapel in Highlands, Texas.

Rosary will be at 7p.m. Monday, September 18. Sterling White Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Ella Julia Lichnovsky, a resident of Colonial Nursing Home, passed away on Monday, August 28 at 11:10 p.m. in Schulenburg at age 88 years, nine months, eight days. She had been ill for two years.

The funeral took place on Thursday, August 31 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, followed by burial in the church cemetery. The Reverend Brian Crookes officiated.

Recitation of the rosary, led by the Reverend Crookes was held on Wednesday, August 30 at 7 p.m.

Born in the yelehrad community on November 20,. 1911, she was the daughter of Albert and Maggie (Veseley) Kahanek. She attended Breslau and Velehrad Schools. On October 20, 1931, she married Edmund Lichnovsky at Hallettsville.

Mrs. Lichnovsky, a housewife, resided in the Velehrad area for 83 years and Schulenburg for five years.

She was a member of the St. John Altar Society and served as secretary of SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad for 28 years. She enjoyed gardening, farming and growing flowers.

A sister in-law, Lillie Kahanek of Conroe and a brother, James Kahanek of New York, New York, survive her.

Her parents, a sister and a brother preceded her in death.

Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club reports on District One fall fun day

On Saturday, September 10, the dancers took center stage at the Annual Kolache Festival in downtown Caldwell. The youth will also be participating at the Burleson County Czech Heritage Day at Caldwell SPJST on Sunday, October 2 and at the Texas Fraternal Congress on Saturday, November 4.

Congratulations to these fine young people for carrying on the Czech heritage and performing this dance for the public.

Dear Readers, District One had its annual fall fun day on Sunday, October 15. It was a blast. We had over 90 people show up. It was a huge success. It was held at lodge 9 Snook.

We had lots of participants in the ornament contest. I got first in my division. I made a reindeer out of a shotgun shell. We had a silent auction. I bought two things—a flash light set and radio head set. We played bingo and had a cool hayride.

A Farmall tractor pulled the cotton trailer. It was fun.

The youth were asked to appear on this weekly show to help promote the annual Kolache Festival that was held the next day. We spent the first week and weekend of October, 2000 getting ready for the Peanut Festival. We made lots of Peanut Brittle to sell at the festival.

We all worked very hard. We also had salted hot candied roasted and raw peanuts to sell.

Festival. We helped the adult lodge who has had a booth at the festival for the last 20 years. This year, we did really well. We were afraid it might rain, but we had a beautiful day with approximately 20,000 spectators. We are looking forward to next year.

Kelli and I were hypnotized in one of the performances. It was fun. We rode in the parade and saw a lot of our friends. Our next meeting will be on November 12, 2000 at 5 p.m. at the hall.

CESAT invites applicants to apply for scholarships The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas, CESAT, an organization whose purpose is to promote and perpetuate the Czech language and Czech culture in Texas announces the Maresh and Micek Scholarships for the 200001 academic year.

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas will grant two scholarships in the name of Dr. Eduard Micek and the other in the name of Dr. Henry R. Maresh. Dr. Micek was a professor of Czech language at the University of Texas. Dr. Maresh was a Houston physician. Both were active in the Czech cultural movement in Texas and both were avid supporters of Czech studies and high education.

An applicant must be: • a Texas resident, or may be a nonresident enrolled in a Texas college or university • a post-secondary student majoring in Czech language or must be pursuing

The youth symphony Primavera is one of the top orchestras in the Czech Republic. It has repeatedly won first place in the national competition of y outh symphonies. These young musicians have performed throughout Europe and will be touring Texas this fall, including a visit to Temple, cosponsored by the SPJST and Temple College. Primavera is a classical string orchestra and is represented by 25 students, ages 12 through 18, of the primary music and arts school Na Strezine, Hradec Kralove.

The group will be performing at the Temple College Auditorium on Saturday, November 4 at 6 p.m. Admission to the concert is free.
