LAM, ENC Boards to Meet For Your Information In case you missed the item which appeared in last week's Vestnik, please note that the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum has received official 501 (c) (3) non-profit designation from the Department of the Treasury. As such, the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) can now receive taxdeductible donations and apply for various grants to fund its growth and development. The LAM Board of Directors meets Saturday morning, September 23 at the SPJST Home Office in Temple.

LAM Chairman Glenn Kaminsky (979) 335-4461 invites all interested members to attend the meeting which starts at 8 a.m.

The SPJST Education and Nature Center Board of Directors will also meet at the SPJST Home Office on September 23. As with the LAM meeting, ENC Chairman John Engelke (254) 799-4247 invites all interested members to attend the meeting which starts at 8 a.m.

Much of the discussion focused on the type of programming that could take place at an SPJST Education and Nature Center. The following activities were suggested: • • • • • • •

Financial planning workshops; Retirement planning seminars; Nature outings; Gardening classes; General fitness instruction; Family living conferences; and Statewide summer camps

Without question, all of the ideas suggested have the potential to bring together people with common interests. And the best part is - with the possible exception of the summer camps - they're all projects that can be implemented now. With a little initiative and planning, these activities - and others like them - could be integrated into the SPJST's fraternal program in the coming year - either on a state-wide or regional basis.

"With regard to establishing a non-profit SPJST ENC, the law provides some very clear guidelines."

Education and Nature Center Whereas the drive to seek non-profit status for the SPJST LAM received considerable discussion in the month's prior to the SPJST Convention, the ENC project received little fanfare. In spite of this low-key introduction, the ENC project received broad-based support at the 28th SPJST Convention in June.

In a letter which accompanied his motion to establish the 501 (c) (3) Education and Nature Center, Delegate John Engelke of Lodge 66, Waco, presented a vision of the project. "A member recreation center," he stated, "would be a good investment for all members, young and old to use for state competition, family fun days, district meetings, district camps, SPJST health fairs and training classes, meetings large and small."

Brother Engelke's motion that a 501 (c) (3) be formed for this purpose was seconded by Delegate Paul Pflughaupt of Lodge 88, Houston. The motion which received no dissenting discussion - was endorsement by several delegates and Supreme Lodge officers, including President Howard Leshikar, Vice President Leonard Mikeska and Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir. Following its passage, ENC Directors - one from each district - were elected in the district caucus meetings.

The first meeting of the ENC Board of Directors took place on Sunday, August 6, in conjunction with the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day at the Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. The minutes of that first meeting appeared in last week's Vestnik.

The Law Is Clear With regard to establishing a nonprofit SPJST Education and Nature Center, the law provides some very clear guidelines. Among them, the focus of the 501 (c) (3) must be to benefit the community or society as a whole - not just the organization's members and their families or other select individuals. Social functions for the benefit of members may be carried out; however, if they are incidental to the 501 (c) (3)'s primary purpose.

In addition to crafting a clearly defined mission statement, three major steps still need to be taken by the ENC Board in pursuing non-profit status: First, it will be necessary file articles of incorporation as a non-profit organization within the state of Texas. Second, it will be necessary for the ENC Board of Directors to adopt a set of by-laws.

Third, it will be necessary for the SPJST ENC to file an application with the IRS for non-profit determination.

Once again, please note that SPJST LAM Directors and SPJST ENC Directors meet at the SPJST Home Office in Temple on September 23. If you are interested in either of these projects or would like to share your observations and suggestions with board members, make plans to attend.

More than just life insurance

SPJST introduces LifeGuard 10 plan You mean SPJST has an insurance plan that will pay me a death benefit while I'm alive? Yes, they do. In fact, it will pay up to one hundred percent of death benefit to the insured due to loss of limbs such as hands, legs or sight of both eyes.

The product just being marketed

by SPJST is called LifeGuard 10.

LifeGuard 10 is a ten-year term that is renewable and convertible. What makes it special is that ti is combined with an accelerated living benefit rider (ALBR), an accidental death rider,and a dismemberment and common carrier rider.

The accelerated living benefit rider allows SPJST to pay the insured if he or she develops a "covered" disease such as heart attack, stroke, life threatening cancer etc. For example, say you have a $100,000 LifeGuard 10 certificate and you have a heart attack. The SPJST will pay you $25,000 (25 percent of death benefit) in a lump sum. This money can be used to pay medical expenses, living costs while not working etc. After the $25,000 is paid to you, the death benefit of your certificate will be reduced to $75,000 and your premiums will be readjusted to $75,000 of coverage.

Another feature of LifeGuard 10 is the Common Carrier Rider. The SPJST will pay. your beneficiary 300 percent of the death benefit if you die while riding as a fare-paying passenger on a common carrier. No need for flight insurance if you have LifeGuard 10.

LifeGuard 10 is issued ages 18 to 60 on male/female, smoker/nonsmoker premiums with a minimum

issue amount of $10,000. For example, you're a male, age 35, nonsmoker, and need $50,000 of coverage.

The premium including all riders is $31.20 monthly for 10 years and then at age 45, monthly premiums increase to $48.79.

Here's a summary of the features LifeGuard 10 offers:

"The challenge lies in defining the Education and Nature Center in such a way that justifies non-profit status."

• 25 percent of death benefit to a living insured in case of one of the following events: heart attack, stroke, life threatening cancer, coronary artery bypass surgery • 50 percent of death benefit to a living insured in case of: Female cancers: breast, ovarian, uterus and cervix Male cancers: prostate and testicular

Dismemberment*: loss of one hand, one foot or the sight of one eye Payment of a dismemberment benefit does not reduce the face amount.

100 percent of death benefit to designated beneficiary upon insured's death or to insured in case of loss of both hands, both feet, sight of both eyes or any combination thereof.

200 percent of death benefit to designated beneficiary upon insured's accidental death.

• 300 percent of death benefit to designated beneficiary upon the insured's accidental death while riding as a fare paying, passenger on a common carrier.

Lodge 29, Taylor hosts District Two• Fall Meeting September 17 Dear Members of District Two, Yes, it is that time of year again.

Time for our fun time meeting. Lodge 29, Taylor will be hosting our meeting and plan to treat us with a good meal of barbecue chicken and sausage with all the trimmings. We will have four spin wheels, a cakewalk and a billiard's tournament for your enjoyment.

Also, an adult Christmas Ornament Contest as well as the Youth Christmas Ornament Contest. All this as well as our regular fun things such as door prizes, prize drawing and silent auction. So I know you will not want to miss out on all this fun.

Mark your calendars now for September 17. Registration starts at 1 p.m. and the meeting part will start at 2 p.m. We are asking that you bring two items (per person) for the spin wheel and a cake for the cakewalk. The district will also provide items and cakes.

As you can see, we will need all you pool players to practice up and come on with us to Taylor for the tournament. I know you will have a good time. Also, please be sure to make a

Christmas ornament. This doesn't just mean the ladies; we want to see some from the men also. The ornament can be no larger than six inches. All the rules are published in the Vestnik on page 19.

Sure hope to see all of you in 'Taylor, September 17 at 1 p.m. I know you will be in for a good fun day.

District Five planning group meeting maps fun-filled day District Five Planning meeting met at Ryan's Restaurant, 34th and Highway 290. The meeting was called to order by President Evelyn Mikeska at 6:30 p.m. The District Five Fall Fun day will be held September 17, 2000. The host lodge will be Lodge 196, Jednota HoustonWest located at 17810 Huffmeister Road, Cypress, Texas, 77429.

We will have a short business meeting from 11:30 to 12 noon.

Registration for the contests will start at 11 a.m. for the youth Christmas ornament contest, for needlepoint, all handmade and/or baked goods, handmade miscellaneous crafts and horseshoes.

Covered Dish Luncheon Lunch will be at noon and social from 12 noon till. This will be a covered dish meal. All of you cooks bring your favorite dish and a sweet.

The meat will be barbecue brisket furnished by the district.

We need door prizes and prizes for bingo, so bring whatever money or gifts.

Carolyn Filipp is in charge of the music. Fred Buri is in charge of games—horseshoes and all other contests of miscellaneous needlepoint,

baked goods and crafts. We will also play bingo. In charge of bingo are Clara Broz and Dorothy Pflughaupt.

Then we will have a silent auction so bring anything that is homemade like pickles, peaches, sauerkraut, baked good or handmade items. We want all to come out for a fun day.

Pie Eating Contest We hope to have a pie-eating contest for the youth. If all goes well, we will do this. Everyone in the district and beyond is more than welcome to help us have fun. If you have never been to a Fall Family Fun Day in your district, you really don't know what you are missing! Get involved in your district. Encourage your district officers and let them know how they can improve things in the districts.

National "Make a Difference Day" is Saturday, October 28, 2000. Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, Make a Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.

Since it was first organized by USA WEEKEND magazine in 1992, millions have participated. SPJST members can too! In 1998, approximately 2 million people volunteered on that day, accomplishing thousands of projects in hundreds of towns and helping millions.

Entry Forms If your lodge or youth club wants to be an official participant in Make a Difference Day 2000, you'll need an entry form. Entry forms will not be accepted by USA WEEKEND until after October 28, 2000.

Fall Festival to be held Saturday, October 14 at Jaycees Hall, 2905 North Street, Victoria, Texas. This CTBA sanctioned event will be judging brisket, chicken and pork as well as jackpot bean cookoff. Eighty percent of all entry fees will be paid to the top five places in each category.

The competition will be held in the pole barn behind the hall. Sixty dollar entry fee enters you in al three categories. (Additional $15 for electricity and additional $5 for jackpot bean category.)

8, Weimar sets estate planning program Lodge

The August 28, 2000 meeting of SPJST Lodge 8 was called to order at 7 p.m. by Leo Jares, President. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the president. All officers were present.

Seven members and two visitors were in attendance.

The secretary read the minutes from the last meeting. There were no corrections or additions. The treasurer's report was read reflecting no changes from the last report.

Eugene and Henrietta Veselka were welcomed as new members of Lodge 8 by transfer.

Henrietta Veselka was appointed Fraternal Activities Coordinator Chairperson.

The District Six Barbeque Cookoff and Fall Festival was discussed and prize drawing tickets were given out.

The cookoff will be Saturday, October 14 in Victoria. You may contact the Lodge 8 president to purchase prize drawing tickets. Proceeds will go to the Scholarship Fund.

Estate Planning Program Open to All Our next meeting will be Monday, September 25 at 7 p.m. at the St. Michael's Family Center in Weimar.

An Estate Planning Program is scheduled and will be open to anyone interested. All members and friends are invited.

20, Granger recognizes 75-year member Lodge

Elizabeth Cervenka, a current resident of the Bluebonnet Nursing Home in Granger, was recently recognized by the SPJST for having been a member for 75-year consecu- Elizabeth Cervenka tive years. A special ceremony was planned for Elizabeth, but due to her health, we were unable to have it.

Elizabeth was born in Granger on October 23, 1902. She was the oldest of eight children born to Joe and Anna Tomancak Jurecka. She attended schools in Bartlett and Granger.

Following her graduation from high school, she attended Toby's Business College in Waco. She returned to Granger and was employed as a bookkeeper by Mr. Snodgrass, a cotton buyer.

In 1928, Elizabeth married Raymond Cervenka and moved to his home near the Hoxie Bridge where they farmed until his death in 1954. For 26 years, she was a housewife and homemaker who took great pride in her garden, orchard and outstanding flowers.

She and Raymond were the parents of three children, Raymond, Jr., Bettye Nell and May Belle.

Following Raymond's death Elizabeth again entered the business world until she retired in 1968. She spent her later years traveling over the U.S. and Mexico, sometimes with friends with the Granger Roadrunners.

She was an avid Cowboy fan and bingo player who also enjoyed playing Moon, dominoes and Aggravation (marbles).

Elizabeth has 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren who will be recognizing her 98th birthday in October.

Lodge 29 wishes Elizabeth a speedy recovery and many more happy years!

Wednesday, September 13, 2000—VESTNIK/7 have gone to a lot of work to have plans drawn. The existing building was moved to its present location, maybe 40 years ago and is in need of a lot of repairs. The plans include a closed in area for barbecuing, etc. and also an open pavilion where parties could be held. It is very important for members to come to this meeting to help us decide on this important issue.

This new building would match our other building. This improvement would make Star Hall more available to rentals.

Melodion Band Coming Plans for October 14 Czech Heritage Day were also discussed. The Melodion Band from the Czech Republic will be playing. Please read Fraternal Activities Coordinator Dorothy Pechal's letter.

Also at our October meeting, we will be honoring new members that took out policies from November 1, 1999 to the present time. Of course, all new members are always welcomed at our meetings and encouraged to come and help us make decisions. So if someone has not attended a meeting as of now, please come October 1.

Also at our October meeting, we will be initiating new members. Please come. This should be interesting.

Also at this meeting, the changes in the Rules and Regulations will be voted on. There will be a covered dish meal after the meeting. The lodge will furnish the meat.

47, Seaton requests member input on new building project Lodge

Members, Our next meeting will be on October 1, starting at 2 p.m. At this meeting we will decide whether or not we want to tear down the old barbecue pit and build a new building to house a new pit. Woodrow Marek and the planning committee have gone to a lot of work to have plans drawn. Dear Members, The Melodion Band from the Czech Republic was booked for Saturday, October 14, 2000 and we have decided to hold the Czech Heritage Day then.

The doors will open at 3 p.m.

A meal consisting of sausage, sauerkraut, potatoes and mixed vegetables will be served from 4 p.m. until sold out. The price is only $5 per plate with tea or coffee and kolaches, too.

The dance will be from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The dance ticket is $6 per person.

Those under 14 admitted free.

If you have a Czech costume, please wear it to add color to this special event. Everyone is being invited to enjoy a good meal and good music for your listening and dancing pleasure on Saturday, October 14 beginning from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m.

63, Sweet Home combines meeting, park social Lodge

Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social on Sunday, September 17, 2000 at the Green Dickson Park in Shiner beginning at 12 noon. Happy hour will be followed by a meal of either hamburgers/hot dogs or barbecue (depending on what is on sale that week). Everything will be furnished by the lodge except the sweets so members are asked to bring the desserts. A birthday cake baked by Ann Moseley will go to someone with a birthday in July, August or September.

A short business meeting will be conducted after lunch. Committees will make their reports and plans will be finalized for the dance in October.

Door prizes will also be given.

The remainder of the afternoon will be spent visiting or playing games.

Bring your fishing rod (we think there is still water in the creek) and lawn chairs. There is also a playground nearby for the kids.

The monthly meeting was held on Sunday August 20 was called to order

by President Jerry Sijansky. The roll call of officers showed all to be present except for Secretary Helen Pavelka who was absent.

On the sick list is one of our longtime members, Rose Huff, who is doing okay and slowly recovering.

Rose, we hope you will be up and about soon.

Due to the absence of Secretary Helen Pavelka, no minutes were read.

The financial report was given by Treasurer Milly Elzner which was approved as given.

President Sijansky reminded members of the coming District Seven Fall Meeting on September 10. He also gave dates of sales class and FIC classes. For the incentive program, we have only two new members so far. We need more if we want to win.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner gave his report on several topics.

The members approved of purchasing three books on Czech heritage from Texas A&M Press at a discount price.

Also, members approved of purchasing a book on Czech veterans.

The August monthly donation of $50 is to be sent to Spohn Hospice. An extra donation of $100 was approved to be given to the new Education and Nature Center.

The next meeting is on Sunday, September 17 at 2 p.m. We will have the usual svacina for which members are to please bring something to eat.

84, Dallas welcomes everyone to Czech Fest Lodge

Dear Members, If you haven't marked September 17 on that calendar in the kitchen, it's time you did. Our 28th annual Czech Fest is being held with doors opening at 11:30 a.m. until the dance ending at 6 p.m. It's the Vanek's playing from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The great Czech dinner of pork roast, sauerkraut with all the trimmings including tea or coffee and desserts will be served for $3.50 per child (12 and under) and $7 per adult. The dinner will be served by Bessie's Catering with desserts made and donated by the good pastry makers of our lodge.

Dinner will be served 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. and afterward enjoy the gift booth, the grocery store, cake walk, racing game and games for the small people. Donations are needed for the booths and, of course, we ask for pastry to be served with dinner please!

Our next meeting is September 18.

Dear Members and Friends, It is Czech Fest time on Sunday, September 17 at Lodge 84, Dallas.

You all come. It is going to be a great fun time for all. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. A delicious Czech dinner will be catered by Sister Bessie Petr. Pork roast, dumplings, sauerkraut, green beans, salad, rolls and dessert. The cost is $7 per adult and $3.50 for children, 12 and under.

There will be booths, games, prizes and dancing. As always, we hope you will support this once a year benefit.

Booths will be a pastry booth and the popular cake walk. Please donate pastry to this booth and also for dinner.

The gift booth usually has home canned pickles, okra and dill cabbage, also jelly and many other nice items.

Any donation will be appreciated. The lodge teen club will run the country store. This is always a fun corner for all. Do donate canned goods, meats and cold drinks. There will be several other booths also.

Rosenberg preserves Czech culture and history The first meeting of 25 Czech-Texas on December 28, 1896 in Fayette County Courthouse in LaGrange was the meeting that preceded the first convention of a new fraternal benefit Society in the State of Texas. The convention was set for June 20, 1897 in LaGrange, Texas.

La Grange, Texas, in historic Fayette County, the "Cradle of Czech Immigration" was the location for the beginning of the SPJST. Lodge 175 is preserving the strong Czech influence that was a part of the development of many organizations throughout the state of Texas. We will help preserve the history of the founding of SPJST and assist in the education of others in our fraternal based organization. Through our monetary donations toward building for the future, we are establishing a place where our Czech-based SPJST will be preserved.

A membership meeting of Lodge 175 will be held on September 20, 7 p.m. at the George Memorial Library, Richmond, Texas Room 2B. In order to preserve the history of our organization, we are appealing to members and former members of any SPJST lodge in Fort Bend County to bring pictures, articles or any information about the beginning of Fort Bend County SPJST lodges. If permission is granted, we would like to make copies of this information and place it in our archives for future use.

Houston-West hosts Melodion Band September 24 Lodge 196, Houston-West is having two fun filled upcoming events that we would like to let you know about.

On September 24, 2000 the Melodion band will be performing at our lodge.

The lodge will be serving a traditional Czech dinner of pork roast, sauerkraut, and dumplings for $5. The dinner will beginning at 12 p.m and will be ending at 2 p.m. The Melodion Band will be taking the stage at 2 p.m and the dance will end at 6 p.m. The cost for the dance is only $6. Everyone of all ages is welcome to come and join us. We will also be having a prize drawing that evening to give away some pretty nice prizes. Some of the prizes include a Sanyo 25" color television, Astro's tickets with golf balls and a sports bag, $100 in cash, $100 gift certificate for Truck N Stuff and much much more.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 92 in Fort Worth, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, JOSEPHINE VITEK PROCHASKA, 74, died Tuesday, August 29, 2000 at a local hospital surrounded in love by her husband, children and grandsons.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 1 at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Rosary was at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 31 at Shannon North Funeral Chapel.

Josephine Jane Vitek was born in Moscow, Texas. She was a longtime resident of Fort Worth and graduate of North Side High School. Jo loved sharing her Czech heritage and was the current president of SPJST Lodge 92 and president of the Friendship Club of Fort Worth. She was a member of KJT 54, KJZT 59, Holy Trinity Catholic Parish of Azle, past president of St. Thomas Altar Society and Catholic Deanery and a member of Harris Hospital Azle Auxiliary.

Along with her husband, Frank, Jo hosted innumerable parties and picnics at their Eagle Mountain Lake home and brought joy to the lives of all who were blessed to know her.

Josephine will be greatly missed by her devoted husband of 53 years, Frank Prochaska; children, son, Frank J. Prochaska and wife, Janet of Arlington, daughter, Janie Prochaska and Mike Peacock and daughter, Alice Prochaska and Roy Rawlings, all of Fort Worth.

Maw Maw leaves a rich legacy of love and family in her grandsons, Jason Gowins, Jerral Lane, Frank Ed Prochaska, Tate Fincher, Toby Gowins, Conner and Joey Prochaska; and many special friends and family.

May our departed sister rest in peace.

She had done many important things and had made decisions to make our Youth Club a better one and for us to have more fun in our events simply because she loved us. She wanted us to love our lodge and more importantly the SPJST as a whole.

Jo was born in Moscow, Texas. She resided in Fort Worth for most of her life through. She attended North Side High School where she graduated honorably.

She loved sharing her Czech heritage with everyone and getting him or her involved in the SPJST. She will always be remembered, cherished and missed in the hearts of the youth in our lodge. We are all praying for the well being and future happiness of Frank Prochaska, Jo's husband and all of Jo's family.

of Paul Bily Paul Edward Bily of Houston passed away August 24, 2000 at the age of 54. He was born February 1, 1946 to Elizabeth (Alice) Bartosh Bily and the late Miroslav Bily.

He is survived by his mother, five brothers and their wives, John and Melinda Bily, Jerry and Deborah Bily, Robert and Jo Ann Bily, James and Vilma Bily and Joseph Bily. He is also survived by six nephews, four nieces, four great-nieces and two greatnephews.

Truman became the 33rd president upon the death of Franklin Roosevelt; Germany surrendered unconditionally on May 7; the first atom bomb was dropped on Japan; Japan surrendered unconditionally on August 15; the United Nations was organized; the Mayo Clinic reported the first successful use of streptomycin in treating tuberculosis; and Jackie Robinson was the first black major league baseball player signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Some famous people who were born in 1945 were Diane Sawyer, Mia Farrow, Goldie Hawn, Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Rob Reiner and Priscilla Presley.

Services for Daniel Albert Sebek, 67 of Temple were held on Saturday, September 2, 2000 at 10 a.m. at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Reverend Harlan officiating.

Burial was in the Rogers Cemetery.

He died Wednesday, August 30, 2000 at his residence.

He was born April 2, 1933 in Barclay, Texas and he spent most of his

life in the Temple and Rogers areas.

He graduated from Rogers High School and Temple College and he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He was employed as the chief of staff at the Olin E. Teague Veterans Center at the domiciliary. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone where he was a past vice president and past president. He was an active member who worked at our money-making projects. He will be missed at our lodge. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Troy.

Survivors are his wife, Patsy Hill Sebek—they would have been married 49 years this December; two sons, Craig Sebek of Kerrville and Daren Sebek of Belton; three brothers, Joe Sebek of Red Ranger, Bill Sebek of Temple, Ed Sebek of Bryan; four sisters, Libbie Ledegar of Austin, Lydia Surovik of Rockdale, Helen Tome of Temple and Alice Barr of Austin; and five grandchildren.

War Service Medal available to Korean War veterans Korean

Washington (Army News Service, June 23, 2000)—U.S. veterans of the Korean War are now eligible to wear a medal initially offered to them more than 50 years ago, but never issued.

In a May 13 letter to Defense Secretary William S. Cohen, Republic of Korea Defense Minister Seong Tae Cho formally announced that his government would provide the Republic of Korea War Service Medal to eligible U.S. veterans of that conflict or to their surviving next of kin. The medal will be provided at no cost to veterans. The medal will be provided at no cost to veterans. The U.S. Air Force had been designated the lead agency to receive and distribute the medals.

"On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War," Cho wrote, "the ROK government decided to issue the medal to pay tribute to the Korean War veterans for their historic endeavors to preserve freedom of the ROK and the free world." The two governments will conduct 50th anniversary ceremonies throughout 2000-2003 and medals may be applied for at any time during this period. The war began on June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces invaded ROK territory. The armistice on July 27, 1953, ended the fighting, although a formal peace treaty has never been completed.

The medal was orginally offered by the ROK in 1951 to United nations forces serving in Korea and adjacent waters. At the time, U.S. law prohibited the U.S. military from wearing medals issued by foreign governments.

Congress changed that in 1954, but by then, most U.S. service members eligible for the medal had returned home.

In 1998, the government of the Republic of Korea renewed its original offer of the medal to U.S. military personnel. On August 20, 1999, the Defense Department approved the acceptance and wear of the medal.

Approximately 1.8 million U.S. veterans of the Korean War are eligible to receive it. Next of kin to eligible deceased veterans can also apply for the medal.

To wear this medal on U.S. military uniforms, U.S. military personnel must have: served between the outbreak of hostilities, June 25, 1950 and the date the armistice was signed, July 27, 1953;

been on permanent assignment or on temporary duty for 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days, and; performed their duty within the territorial limits of Korea, in the waters immediately adjacent thereto or in aerial flight over Korea participating in actual combat operations or in support of combat operations.

The ROK specifies the eligibility period and criteria. Only the ROKspecifies the eligibility period and criteria. Only the ROK-provided medal is approved by the U.S. government to meet the U.S. criteria for wear on the military uniform.

To apply, veterans must provide a copy of their discharge paper, commonly known as a "DD-214," or a corrected version of that document, a "DD-215." National Guard members must provide their statement of service equivalent, "NGB Form 22."

Because the order of precedence for non-U.S. service medals and ribbons is determined by date of approval, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal should be worn after the Kuwait Liberation Medal which was the last foreign medal approved for wear by U.S. military personnel. For the majority of Korean War veterans, the medal will be worn after the United Nations Medal or the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal if they served during that conflict.

Dear Members, The annual District Two Fall Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 17 at Lodge 29, Taylor.

This day, of course, is the day for our Christmas Ornament Contest. I do hope all youth will participating.

Youth, get your parents involved having them make and enter an ornament of their own. We will once again have a contest for the youth and adults alike.

Last year's participation was great and we hope this year's to be even better.

Our parents really got involved and it was so neat.

All registration will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Registration cards will be available upon arrival. Ornament contest rules appear on page 19 of this week's Vestnik. You may enter one ornament.

Youth Club members must be present at the district meeting to win.

Once again this year, the youth club will have a silent auction. All proceeds will go toward the Camp Val Verde Improvement Fund sponsored by District Two. Camp Val Verde is the home for our summer camp. There are several improvements needed which • be of benefit to our campers. Any will donations for the auction will be appreciated and, of course, we will be in need of bidders. We thank you in advance for your support to benefit the camp we love so dearly and the continued memories we all have had at Camp Val Verde. A scrapbook had been compiled of this year's camp for everyone to see the Tun we have each year.

Campers, your autographed Hawaiian pictures will be given out at the fall meeting. Be sure you attend to receive your pictures and get any autographs you may have missed.

The camp was held on Friday, July 7 through Monday, July 10, 2000. It was well attended and enjoyed by all.

On Friday's schedule was a nature hike with Dave, crafts and swimming. The Friday night hike was chaperoned by Bryan Becan, Mary Steinman and Kay Weeks. The Saturday schedule was a full activity day. The juniors did the challenge course in the morning, while the teens continued with their scheduled activities.

Saturday night was when the All 4 Fun activities came to Val Verde with bungee pull and jousting and were enjoyed by all. The LITs were treated to a special night horseback riding followed by enjoying the activities that ALL 4 Fun brought. The LITs missed supper so John and Diana Engelke took the kids into Waco and they were treated at the Golden Corral.

On the way back to Val Verde, the LITs saw go carting and asked if they could race a few laps. If only the LITs would of known that the only girl, Jamie Novak, was going to beat them in the race, they probably would not have asked. The only comment was that the owner of the go-carts wanted to if any of these kids had driver licenses. Watch out! When they finally made their way back to Val Verde, they joined up with the teens in the late night swim and a longer hike with Bryan, Mary and Kay. Sunday morning, we had a short service with Jerry Zabojnik after the flag ceremony, followed by a full day of activities such as crafts, archery, horseback riding and. Dave's nature world.

But the teens in the morning went to do the challenge course before jumping up to their full day of activities. After lunch, the youth had a demonstration of what the Army serves for lunch.

When realizing that 90 plus year-old Cornelia's food tasted pretty darn good, Captain Wallace allowed one of his men to show the youth the kind of vehicle they use in combat. The hum-v • (Hummer) was a big hit with all — even the chaperones! Big Daddy's came out to Val Verde to cater our hamburger and hot dog supper. The LITs planned a scary water balloon hayride for the juniors. The counselors then planned a water balloon hayride for the teens, but the juniors had a second ambush before the teen's hayride returned to the director's cabin. Also, the youth had to have their late night swim followed by a longer night hike with those wonderful people, Bryan, Mary, Kay and Dave. Dave took the juniors on a ghost story night hike that

Wednesday, September 13, 2000—VESTNIKJ11 got the little kids to go straight to bed while the teens were swimming. The teens still enjoyed the night hike even if it was a little longer than the night before. Anything to stay up later suited them just fine — as long as they were at the flag pole at 7:45 a.m. for the flag ceremony.

Monday morning was the time to clean up cabins and get ready to go home. But when the parents arrived, the children were not really ready to go home. I have this problem every year and the children keep asking me if camp could be just a little bit longer.

This is telling you about the youth, however, without these special people, we would not have camp. Many thanks to Gladys Yates, our dear nurse, who, this year, really did get to enjoy camp because she only used two Bandaids, a bottle of alcohol (those chiggers just hate that rubbing alcohol) and two Turns (that's because they ate the army food or was it Val Verde's food?) John Engelke, we love you for planning the activities and for all the donations of cold drinks and keeping the ice water full and the cold drinks iced down.

You made a hit! Michael and Debbie Galler, you too, were a special hit on the donations you got for camp. The 50 cases of bottled water, the Blue Bell ice cream (after our late night swim sure were good!) and the Hummer was the special treat that everyone is still talking about. Thank you for setting up the arrangements with Captain Wallace to talk to the children about the army. They really did enjoy it very much! Snacks ... snacks are not complete until you have one of Mr. Jerry's snocones. Jerry Zabojnik treated us so special three times a day with his refreshing treats. Everyone always found the correct time for snacks.

Diana Engelke, Vicki Sims, Debbie _Galler and Justin Engelke, thank you for keeping the kids busy with all of your fun craft ideas. You always come up with fun ideas that we only had a few who didn't want to go to their next activity. Emil Petr, who claims he is retiring, but we will not let him, again did another great job in archery. Camp is not camp without him teaching the kids how to hit the bull's eye. Dave, who is a wonderful nature instructor, always has a good answer to any nature life and the youth enjoyed your hikes. A special thanks to all the counselors for taking care of your assigned groups. We appreciate you taking time to do this for the youth.

Many thanks to our special guests, Howard Leshikar, Gene McBride and his wife, Frances, Johnnie Krizan and Melanie and David. This means so much to the youth when they see you come to their activities. They look up to all of you guys!

District Five Youth Counselor invites everyone to Fall Fun Day Dear Members, This if for everyone in District Five and beyond who would like to join us in a fun-filled day. Where?—at Lodge 196, Houston-West. Date?— September 17 beginning at 11 a.m. through until you get tired. There will be great food, contests of all kinds.

The Fraternal Activities Coordinator of District Five Fred Buri promises you a great day for fun and games.

The youth will have a Christmas Ornament Contest. There will be one also for the adults. The youth in all the four age groups will participate.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club reports on Snook VFD BBQ Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club had our annual Country Store at the Snook Volunteer Fire Department Barbecue on August 27. We made a lot of money on our raffle tickets and store items which will be used for charities, community services and activities.

On September 3, we plan to go to the movies and take our monetary donations to Jerry Lewis' MDA Telethon.

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club reports on August meeting Dear Readers, The Snook Youth Club had its monthly meeting on August 2 at 6:30 p.m. Our meeting was well attended.

Mrs. Marie Shelfer passed out our new tee-shirts and certificates for the people who participated in the tee-shirt contest.

After that, we went over old and new business. Our new charities for the month of September are to bring two dozen cookies per family for Grandparent's Day program and donate $1 per member to the Red Cross. After the meeting, Mr. Rob Collins came to talk to us about owning a business. It was real interesting.

Lodge 66, Waco Youth Club reports on August meeting Dear Members, The August 20, 2000 Youth Club meeting was called to order by President Jodi McAdams. The Pledge and youth motto was led by Katie Weeks.

Youth Leader Debbie Galler congratulated all of the participants and winners at State Youth Achievement Day. Congratulations to all who participated. We were all winners.

We will have an August social on August 29, 2000 at 6:30 p.m. at the hall. Everyone is asked to bring their favorite sundae topping. We will make plans and state working on our Westfest float. We will set other dates as needed to complete our project. We will also have a float in the Moody Cotton Harvest parade. The Moody Parade Committee will be selling chances on an autographed baseball by Nolan Ryan.

On September 10, we will to Moody Care Center at 2 p.m. to honor the grandparents with gifts we make. The residents of Moody Care Center are very special to our Youth Club.

CZECH HERITAGE AND CULTURE

Kalich home moved to Texas Czech Heritage ana Cultural Center On Thursday, June 22, 2000, the historic Kalich home was moved from Freyburg, about five miles northwest of Schulenburg, to its new location on U.S. Highway 77 and Fair Grounds Road at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Restoration of the Kalich home will begin this summer with roofing and leveling.

When complete, the house will serve as the office and visitors' center for the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange. It is the first structure on the Center's 70-acre site. Donated by Jonathan and Peggy Barta Kalich of Freyburg, the Kalich home dates from the early 1900s.

John Kana of Kana Brothers Inc. House Leveling & Moving, LaGrange, moved the house at cost.

For many Texans, the architecture of the historic Kalich home produces instant recognition and many memories. The house is a traditional boardand-batten, one and a half story farmhouse with 12-inch vertical siding.

"The Kalich home is the first of several structures that will be moved to the Center's 70-acre site," says Marvin Marek, chairman of the Artifacts Committee. "With its traditional architecture and sound structure, the Kalich home will be an historic and useful addition to our project."

"On behalf of the board of directors, we are most grateful for the gen-

erosity of the Karch family in donating their ancestral home," says Retta Slavik Chandler, president of the board of directors. -When it is restored, this classic Texas Czech farmhouse will help to tell the story of our rural past."

The $50,000 Heritage Building Fund to support the restoration was launched in December 1999. To date, more than $13,000 has been received.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange will be an interactive historical and cultural center dedicated to the heritage of Texas' one million Czechs. The Center will be built on 70 acres above the Colorado River off Highway 77 in LaGrange. It will include a museum/library/archives, amphitheater, living history farm, living history Texas Czech village, interpretive nature trail and picnic area. Organized by a coalition of Texas Czech organizations, the Center is a non-profit organization. A $17 million capital campaign to fund the Center is under way. Historic Kalich Home Moved to LaGrange The Kalich home, being restored as the first office and visitors' center of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, LaGrange, is shown in its original location in Freyburg after a snow in 1949. The house, donated by Jonathan and Peggy Barta Kalich, was the home of Josef Kalich and Magdalena Hauptmann Kalich who arrived in Galveston in 1883 from Habendorf (Polouvsi) in northern Moravia.
