mere Interest Loans Available While the Supply Lasts ...

It's one thing to build a lodge hall.

It's another thing to pay for its maintenance and upkeep. Recognizing this need, the Supreme Lodge, at its July meeting, voted to enact a program that will make zero-interest loans available to lodges seeking to make improvements in existing facilities. The SPJST will make up to $50,000 in zero interest loans per calendar year, effective now.

The maximum amount that will be loaned to any one lodge is $10,000.

The program guidelines are simple, explains Supreme Lodge SecretaryTreasurer 4anita Anglin, who heads the Mortgage Lending Department.

"The loan ' s will be made available on a first-come, first served basis," she says, and will be subject to an evaluation by the district director. "Application fees and closing costs will be waived," Ms. Anglin says, adding that lodges will have up to seven years to repay the loan.

If this sounds like a program that could benefit your lodge - or, if you have any questions - please contact Ms. Anglin or Mortgage Loan Specialist Ann Paruzinski at 1 (800) 727-7578 for an application. It will also be necessary for you to submit a resolution, on behalf of your lodge membership, requesting the opportunity to participate in the special loan program.

Czechs in Texas Thanks and congratulations to the members of the Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society for the outstanding job they did last week, hosting the Fourth Annual Czech Genealogy Conference at the Brazos Center. "We began planning for the conference more than 14 months ago and spent hundreds of hours trying to make this conference educational, enjoyable and comfortable," says Patrick Janis, Brazos Valley Chapter President.

And it showed.

Some of the speakers included Leo Baca, who reviewed the epic voyages and stories of some of the early Texas Czechs; Susan Eason, who discussed the Catholic archives in Texas, the Reverend

John Gantt, who presented the history of the Czech-Moravian Brethren Church, Dr. Mirek Koudelka and Karel Kysilka - both professional genealogists from the Czech Republic . . . and on and on.

There was even a part of the program devoted to Czech fraternals in Texas, including the SPJST, during which time I had the honor to share the floor with Larry Laznovsky, a member of SPJST Lodge 135, Ennis who talked about the Sokol movement in the United States and the Czech Republic. Sokol was founded in 1862 in Prague with an emphasis on physical fitness and democracy. It's an interesting story and one which we will explore at length in a future story.

Congratulations are also in order for Brother Laznovsky who was elected President of the American Sokol Organization at their recent National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska. Other Texans taking top Sokol positions included Rhonda Liska of Lodge 135, Ennis, who was elected Secretary; Mary Steinman of Lodge 154, Fort Worth, who was elected Financial Secretary; Jerry Milan of Lodge 154, who was elected as an Executive Board Member, Bob Podhrasky of Lodge 130, Dallas, who was elected By-Law Committee Chairman and Sylvia Laznovsky of Lodge 135 Ennis who was elected, Membership Committee Chairman. All of the new officers took office on July 25, following the Thirteenth Sokol Slet held in Prague, Czech Republic.

Back to the conference, SPJST was also represented by SPJST Museum Curator Dorothy Pechal and assistant Sandra Dubcak, who displayed items from the SPJST Museum. SPJST Library, Archives and Museum President Glenn Kaminsky of Lodge 28, East Bernard and his wife, Jeanette, were also in attendance.

Once again, hats off to the members of the Brazos Valley Czech Heritage Society and the Czech Heritage Society of Texas for the important work they are doing to bring new life to Czech culture in Texas. Keep up the good work!

Step 1: You select an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment.

Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs.

Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value.

Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as

the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi reports on July meeting The July 16 meeting was called to order by President Jerry Sijansky. The roll call for officers showed all the be present except Vice President Anna M. Moss to be absent. She had been on the sick list and now is dong better.

Everyone wished Brother Jerry Elzner a happy birthday. He had a turned 75 years on July 14.

The minutes and financial reports were accepted as given.

Antique Appliances eing Sought For the Fraternal Activities Coordinator's report, Brother Jerry Elzner said on July 4, there were 33 flags displayed at the hall and when they went back in the evening to pick them up, there were only 16 left. The other 17 had been stolen. Among some topics he talked about was the progress on TCHCC in LaGrange. The old farmhouse had been moved in and work on the amphitheater will start in September. He said they are asking for old household appliances to be used in the farmhouse. Let him know.

October 15 Dance Coming on October 15, is a dance at Sokol Hall with music by Bud Whittington. The music will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. This dance is sponsored

by Sokol Corpus Christi and SPJST Lodge 79. The members will be working with them. More details as they become available.

The $50 monthly donation for July was given to Habitat for Humanity.

Dear members and friends, We went to Coushatta in Louisiana to gamble again, of course. Our doughnuts were furnished by Lucille and Anton Stechmann, soft drinks by Al Polla and Johnny Sklar, sandwiches by Press Clooney and cookies, which were really a surprise, were furnished by Earline Hoffman. I think everyone had a great time. I also heard that some won money - but not me.

Happy Anniversary Our friends, Ruth and Bob Martinak, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on July 8 at Industry Fireman's Hall. There were about 500 guests present from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and surrounding areas. Music was by the Central Texas Sounds and the Donnie Wavra Orchestra. Ruth and Bob have two children and six grandchildren. They are all members of Lodge 88. A wonderful time was had by all who attended.

Laurabelle Warnasch is still on the sick list and Anton Stechmann is out of cardiac intensive care and in a room but they both still need our prayers.

Well, Jake Jacob fought a long and hard battle, but passed away on Tuesday, August 1. He was buried from Zion Lutheran Church on Thursday, August 3. He was born in LaBahia, Texas. We will miss him.

Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, Louise Jacob and their three daughters, Linda Bench, Patsy Sakowitz and Dinah Sultanik.

Who Is It? He was born on November 22, 1917 in New Ulm, Texas. He graduated from Rock House School in New Ulm, Texas and attended the University of Houston.

He came to Houston in 1936 to work for Stoerner Building Contractors. His permanent employment was with J.C. Penney & Co. on Main street in 1938.

He attended Westbury United Methodist Church and he was married on November 11,1939 at Industry, Texas and has one daughter and one son. He served in the U.S. Army approximately three years. He was in Company "A" 87th Mountain Infantry, 10th Mountain Ski Troop Division. During his training

92, Fort Worth hosts Tarok tournament August 19 Lodge

Happy Anniversary!

Happy 60th Anniversary to Jerry and Billie Sebek, members of Lodge 88, Houston! Lovingly submitted by daughter, Barbara Perkins; son and wife, Darrell and July Sebek; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. in Camp Hale, Colorado, he was classified as a professional skier. From Camp Hale he was shipped overseas to the invasion of Attu and Kiska and was in on the invasion of Anzio in Italy. He received the Overseas Servite Bar, EAME Campaign Ribbon, two Bronze Stars, Asiatic/Pacific Campaign Ribbons with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifleman's Medal and Combat Infantry Merit Badge. After discharge from the Army, he went back to J.C. Penney Co. as manager of a floor there. He left Penney's and worked for R.M. Gordon Grocery Supply, Houston Popcorn and Welling Distributing. In 1972, he started his own business and ran that until 1980 when he retired and gave the business to his son. He was a ten-year member of North Side Rotary and worked with Cenikor Rehabilitation Center. He was a founder of Disciples United Methodist Church in Houston.

Later, he transferred to Westbury United Methodist Church where he served on the building committee. He became a member of Lodge 88 in 1965.

In 1977 he received an Honorary Recognition Plaque for services rendered. He was on the entertainment committee for 11 years; Vice Chairman for two years; the Board of Trustees for 21 years (two years Chairman and several years Vice Chairman). He has been on the Blue Room Committee, on the Finance Committee, Building, Rental, Inventory, Grounds, Rules and Regulations, Bar and Party Committee, a member of the Men's Club, serving as President one year. He has been a delegate seven times to the SPJST convention. He joined the Houston Livestock Show Committee as a Lifetime member with 15 years active service and seven years in the 200 Club. He is still very active in the lodge bar.

Who Is It? He is Royal Warnasch and has been married to Laurabelle over 60 years. His former business was RoyBel Distributing Company. His daughter is Beverly Jean McGaughey who was born in 1945 and his son is Royal, Jr. who was born in 1953. He has two grandsons and one granddaughter. 172, Pasadena hosts successful benefit for Rose Center Lodge

On Wednesday, July 26, Lodge 172 held its regular monthly meeting.

President Robert Mayfield called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

Robert told everyone about the District Five Fall Meeting September 17 that will be held at Lodge 196 in Cypress.

First Vice President Bobbye Johnson told the members that the Rose Benefit was a big success. They surpassed their goal. The exact figures were not available as of date. She also told everyone that The Rose served 1,045 shrimp dinners.

Entertainment Chairman Bobbye Johnson told everyone that on September 16, the night we are having Johnny Dyson's Big Band, there are

Seventeen people attended the event. Special guests included Ginger's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Schovajsa, a sister, Tiffany Schovajsa and her grandmother, Mrs. Dorothy Schovajsa. Pictured above are Ginger and Lodge President Yvonne Garrett. Ginger is a graduate of Industrial High School. two other big bands playing in the area and were not sure if we would have a large enough crowd to pay for the band. After a short discussion, it was put to a vote. The vote to cancel the band was unanimous.

196, Houston-West hosts Czech Melodion Band September 24 Lodge

204, Stephenville participates in Hico parade Lodge

The members of Lodge 204 met on July 17 for a short meeting and planned to enter the Hico parade on Wednesday, July 26.

On Monday, the 24, we gathered at B.J. Russell's home to decorate a trailer that B.J. offered to use for the parade. Those of us that were there were Stan, Shannon, Krystyn and Eileen Anderson, B.J. and Joyce Russell, and Gracie and Norman Kneschk. It was a lot of fun to be working together and getting ready for the parade.

SPJST On Parade On the Wednesday, we all gathered in Hico for the parade and had a great time handing out SPJST information, frizbies, pencil erasers, rulers and finger nail files with SPJST on them.

Some of us wore SPJST shirts or caps.

I wore a little read vest that I had for about 20 years, but somehow, it seemed to be smaller than it was the last time I wore it (it must have gotten smaller hanging in the closet.) You can believe that if you want to. I also wore an Alpine hat that I had when I was the president of the Fort Worth Gelman Club. Gracie wore a tee-shirt that said, "Don't Kick the Bucket Without SPJST." There was a big crowd in Hico for the parade and we all had a great time.

Next Meeting August 21 The next meeting will be the third Monday in August that will be the 21st at 7 p.m. at the Senior Citizen's Center in Hico. All SPJST members are invited and bring a friend to join in on the fun we have at the meetings.

In my last letter, I said that when you smile it could cause wrinkles. I also heard that when you frown, it could cause wrinkles so it just depends what kind of wrinkles you like best.

Keep smiling and the world will smile with you.

Got a Fence?

Grow a Garden For busy members — or those who without space for a regular garden — consider a "cinder block garden," utilizing the big concrete blocks typically used to construct foundation walls and such. Not having the room to plant a garden, I lined the blocks along my chainlink fence, filled the holes with potting soil and planted watermelon, cantaloupe and pumpkin seeds. We are now enjoying the fruit from the vine — which also makes a beautiful fence decoration. At the end of the season, pull the vines off the fence, dump the blocks and wait until next spring to start again.

Kulhanek Family The 28th Kulhanek family reunion for the descendants of Antonin and Celestine Kulhanek will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2000. The event starts with mass at 8:15 a.m. in Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Frelsburg, Texas. Family registration will begin at 10 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Dining Hall.

District Three attends Leader-inTraining Retreat The LIT Retreat at Peaceable Kingdom on Friday, June 2 - June 4 had six boys in attendance from District Three. I was proud to have such a fine group of boys: Dustin Harrison and Paxton Davies from Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Randy Trojacek and Jake Holland from Lodge 25, Ennis and Brooks Zabojnik and Jarod Olds from Lodge 84, Dallas.

This is the largest group of LITs District Three has ever had as well as the state had over 30 new teenagers who want to help us District Youth Counselors at camp and other local and district activities.

District Three also wants to thank Melanie for planning such a productive retreat for these teens.

Three well represented at convention District

SPJST District Three was well represented in the 28th Convention in Temple, Texas on Tuesday, June 13 at the Youth Spectacular Program. State Queen Colette Kenney and her Duchess Kayla Kenney from Lodge 84, Dallas and State King Paxton Davies and his Duke William Fuller from Lodge 92, Fort Worth played a roll in welcoming and passing out programs for the banquet and the Youth Spectacular Program.

Miss SPJST Meribeth Novak from Lodge 84, Dallas and Mr. SPJST Jason Hermis District Five from Lodge 88, Houston attended as emcees with the state king and queen. The Spectacular was fantastic and everyone who performed did a super job.

Representing District Three in the program was Jamie Lyn Novak from Lodge 84, Dallas. She performed her State Youth Achievement Day gymnastics routine "Conductor's Magic."

I was very proud of the District Three Royalty and performer. who presented our district with class and grace.

be heading to a new camp, Peaceable Kingdom, on August 18 through 20.

This camp is a beautiful facility located near Killeen.

We will have a weekend filled with lots of fun activities. Get ready for horseback riding, challenge course, scavenger hunts, lots of swimming and much more. Be sure to bring a Hawaiian outfit for the Saturday night party and be ready to hoola!

All of you should have received a letter about items that you will need to bring to camp. If you did not receive one, please let me know. The main items to pack are enthusiasm and lots of rest because there won't be much sleeping at this camp! I'm looking forward to seeing all of you on August 18!

Dear Vestnik Readers, On the weekend of June 16-18, 43 SPJST youth and adults from Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 28, East Bernard; Lodge 30 Taiton; Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje; and Lodge 97, Placedo attended District Six summer camp at Camp Lone Star in LaGrange. Jason Kaspar, Chase Zalman, Shara Dluhos, T.J. Drapela, Adam Siptak, Nicholas Vahalik, Kristine Dum, Megan Marcaurele, Chad Dorotik, Kirby Bubela and Kyle Kaspar served as Leaders-in-Training (LITs) for the camping 'weekend. These youth attended LIT Retreat and were in charge of helping out with various responsibilities at camp, such as flag ceremonies, devotional, party planning, games, dancing and singing.

The camp opened Friday afternoon with DYC Marcy Dorotik giving introductions, rules and cabin assignments. Once everyone was settled in, activities began with the youth going swimming. After supper, the campers enjoyed battling their opponents off while they played war games. As the sun was setting, campers, took to the lake for some canoeing, swimming and fishing. Before going to bed, we ended our day enjoying ice cream floats for refreshments and a night devotional.

Fun in the Sun Saturday morning activities began with it raining, therefore, campers sang some of their traditional and (Editor's Note: Please watch for favorite camp songs indoors.

After —SPJSTlunch, campers enjoyed making Indian-style dream catchers to hang by their beds to keep out the bad dreams District at night. Afterwards, the youth enjoyed more swimming, canoeing and fishing. That afternoon, since it was hot out, we then enjoyed some watermelons donated by the Dear Campers, Scholeman's watermelon farm.

Wild, Wild West Saturday night, the LITs hosted a party for the SPJST campers. This year's party theme was the "Wild, Wild West." Various campers dressed up in their best Indian, cowboy, bandit and saloon girl costumes for the festivities. Best costume for the evening went to Desire Arrinbette for the girls and Gerard Marcaurele from Lodge 30, Taiton for the boys. Starting off the night's events, a dance was performed by LITs Megan Marcaurele and Shara Dluhos. A solo dance was performed by Danielle Zalman, followed by a group dance of the Cabin 5 Saloon girls consisting of Danielle Zalman, Kirby Bubela, Stephanie Fucik, Dana Vanek and Holly Scott.

During the party, various games were played along with a round of the limbo and a tug-of-war contest. The younger boys consisting of Brent Gold, Travis Krpec, Brandon Drapela, Steven Drapela, Christopher Vanak, Jon Marcaurele and Cling Gold (doing his own spot light dance) finally

decided to get in on the performance acts singing and performing to Shania Twain's,"Man, I Feel Like A Woman" and "Rock This Country." Campers finished the party dancing to some of their favorite dances. To finish the evening, campers roasted marshmallows and made smores around the campfire. We then had a very special devotional before going to bed singing, "Kum Ba Ya" and concluded with some special words and thank yous.

Sunday morning breakfast was served, cabins were cleaned and everyone then departed for home. All in all, District Six Camp was a huge success.

District Six wants to thank our State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny and her new husband, David, as well- as President Howard Leshikar for visiting with us at camp. We really appreciated you coming and we hope you had a great time.

District Two presents Youth Achievement Day Results Dear Members, Congratulations to all the participants in this year's District Two YAD. All entries—talent, royatly and crafts were excellent. Thank you, youth, for making this day a fun filled day of entertainment. We had a total of 57 participants. There were 13 royalty contestants, along with 11 dukes an duchessses, 24 individual talent acts, eight group talents, three scrapbooks and posters and 160 craft entries. As you can see, there were some mighty busy youtyh for the last several weeks and months.

Our day began with the presentation of the flags by former Youth Club members, Snannon Pechal and Mark Greger. Our emcee for the day was our 1994 SPJST District Two State King Jason Cervenka. Other former youth members helping were Gary Skrabanek, Erin Skrabanek, David Koslovsky and Melanie Koslovsky Regan and Tammy Baker. There were also several membes in the audience. It is great to see youth still involved with the youth program even after they become members of the adult lodge. We always welcome your help.

Thank you Lodge 29, Taylor for hosting this year's event. We appreciate your hospitality and the food was delicious. Thank you to Youth Leader Carol Green who worked so hard in gettng everything in order prior to leaving on her family vacation in Canada. We are glad you had a good trip and especially glad of the safe return home. A big thank you and hugs to all parents and youth who were at the hall at 6 a.m. to set up for the day. With us all working together, it was so nice to have a few spare minutes of free time prior to registration. Thank you to Barbara Johle for notarizing camp forms and to Rita Kelm for all the running around when I needed help throughout the day. I thank everyone who had any part in YAD, whether it be in registration, tabulation or moving a chair, I appreciate your help. And of course, a special thank you to the parents and our youth leaders. Your time and encouragement are so every important to our youth. We were very pleased to have with us our District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and is wife, Irma and our incoming Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and his wife, Francis, Editor Brian Vanicek and wife, Joan and Museum Curator Dorothy Pechal. Thank you for being there and for all your help. And of course, to my assistants, Janet Lyon and. Carol Tallas. You ladies are wonderful! Thank you for your countless hours and support.
