State Royalty, YAD showcases SPJST youth talent this weekend Young people from across Texas will be at Flag Hall in Cyclone on Saturday, August 5 and at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple on Sunday, August 6 for SPJST's Annual State Youth Achievement Weekend. More than 300 young people will participate in the two-day event which represents the grand finale of summer-long district contests. The competition includes speech, talent and handicrafts. State Royalty: August 5 On Saturday, August 5, 1999-2000 SPJST State King Paxton Davies of Fort Worth, State Queen Colette Kenney and State Duchess Kayla Kenney, both of Mesquite and State Duke William Fuller of Springtown will preside over the SPJST State Royalty Competition which begins at 4 p.m. at Flag Hall (SPJST Lodge 24) in Cyclone. First place king and queen winners from the seven SPJST districts across the state of Texas will compete for the titles of 2000-2001 SPJST State King and State Queen. This year's candidates are representing SPJST lodges in Dime Box, Taylor, Dallas, San Angelo, Houston, Hallettsville, Taiton and Floresville. The king and queen are selected on the basis of a three minute speech during which they are scored on content, delivery and overall poise. King and queen candidates are high school-aged SPJST youth club members. The 2000-2001 State King and Queen will represent the SPJST at various events across Texas. At 6:30 p.m., a barbecue brisket and sausage dinner, catered by Cyclone Corral, will be available for $5. The grand march begins at 7:30 p.m. followed by a free dance with music by MorrisCode. Flag Hall is located 13 miles east of Temple off Highway 53 and FM 485. From Interstate 35 in Temple, take Exit 301 (Texas Highway 53 East - Central Avenue - Adams Avenue). Follow Highway 53 East for 13 miles, driving through the communities of Seaton and Zabcikville. At the blinking light on the curve, turn right onto FM 485. Drive less than one mile and turn right onto FM 964. Flag Hall is located on the left. The event is open to the public, and no admission will be charged. (Continued on page 3.)
