Message from Vice President Leonard Mikeska Dear Members, On August 1, 2000, the position of SPJST Vice President will officially be transferred to Gene McBride.

The transition is approved by the Supreme Lodge and complies Leonard Mikeska with the by-laws.

Gene McBride will assume full responsibility for the position on August 1 and I will continue to be available to assist with an orderly transition at the request of Vice President McBride.

I am very pleased to see the vice presidency being filled by Gene McBride. He has worked hard and I think he deserves the position. He and Frances will represent us very well.

Message from Vice President-Elect Gene McBride Dear Members, August 1 is just around the corner.

That will be my first day as your Vice President. I am so excited to serve you as Vice President of the SPJST. I thank all of the delegates and lodges for their support in electing me to this position. I must say that I am honored.

In my 22 years working with the SPJST, I have been very fortunate to have worked under two Vice Presidents — Bernie Gebala, from 1978 to 1994; and Leonard Mikeska, from 1994 to 2000 — who have both been great leaders.

They have offered much guidance in preparing me for Gene McBride the vice presidency.

I strongly believe in the SPJST and it goals. I will do everything I can to uphold SPJST's high ideals. I will make my decisions based on what is

Summer Camp by the Sea Ever wonder what it would be like to spend the night aboard an aircraft carrier? How about two nights? District Five Youth Club members had that opportunity recently as they spent their summer camp participating in the threeday and two-night "Live Aboard" program aboard the U.S.S. Lexington. a vintage World War II aircraft carrier harbored in Corpus Christi Bay. I had the opportunity to join the campers and counselors on their odyssey which began with "induction" on Friday morning, July 14.

Following inspection and a brief orientation, we were divided into two groups - the guys and the girls - and directed to our respective quarters below deck.

"The U.S.S. Lexington's Sleep Aboard program is conducted in a funspirited, but military manner," says District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton, who selected the high seas alternative summer camp. "Falling in line, stowing your gear and going through the chow line are all part of the unique and memorable experience," she says. "More important, camping on the Lexington provided a historical and patriotic backdrop for this year's camp.

It enabled our young people to sample what life was like for the men and women who served to defend our freedom."

In one on-board activity, campers divided into four groups and participated in a scavenger hunt. The game was filled with references to the ship's historic past, enabling campers to learn as they explored the ship. And, believe me; there was a lot to learn!

Commissioned in 1943, the Lexington served the United States longer and set more records than any other, carrier in the history of naval aviation. During World War II, she participated in nearly every operation in the Pacific Theater.

The U.S.S. Lexington: A high seas alternative to summer camp.

The Lexington earned her famous nickname, the "Blue Ghost" because of her blue color scheme and the fact that she was repeatedly and incorrectly reported sunk by the Japanese propagandist Tokyo Rose. Nevertheless, the "Blue Ghost" kept returning to fight again and again. During World War II, her planes destroyed more than 370 enemy aircraft in the air and 475 or more on the ground. She also sank or destroyed 300,000 tons of enemy cargo and damaged another 600,000 tons. The Lexington was the oldest working carrier in the United States Navy when she was decommissioned in 1991.

These days, as one of its primary goals, the U.S.S Lexington Museum on the Bay seeks to instill the "lessons of patriotism" to future generations.

But, you can be sure, there was more to this camp than naval history. Away from the ship, District Five campers also enjoyed several area excursions, including visits to the Ingleside Historical District, Discovery Center, Texas State Aquarium and Padre Island.

And what did the young people think of the experience? Krystle Bender, 16, of Lodge 88, Houston, served as one of the eight LITs (Leader-In-Training) assisting with this year's camp. "I thought it was really cool," says Krystle, who was participating in her tenth SPJST summer camp. "We learned a lot about history, too . . . It was fun!"

Let your local outstanding volunteer know that their good works are appreciated.

Everyday Heroes On July 1, 2000 the Mid-Year Lodge Incentive Report is due. The Mid-Year Report is the pink form on page four of the 2000 SPJST Lodge Incentive Program Book. Your lodge must submit this report as prescribed in the guidelines of the SPJST Lodge Incentive Program.

Lodge 4, Hallettsville Lodge 6, Cottonwood observes Family Day hosts 103rd annual picnic August 13 Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, July 9, 2000 at the Hallettsville City Park at 2 p.m.

President Joe Siptak opened the meeting and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Welcomed and recognized was Viola Melnar, a transfer member from the disbanded Bila Hora Lodge.

Vicky Zak read a resolution of sympathy for our departed member, Hilda Melnar.

Roll call showed all officers present.

Secretary Margaret Smotek read the minutes to the last meeting and correspondence . Our lodge had new member, Lallora Konvicka. Shirley Kalmus will also receive a 50-year pin.

Treasurer Helen Zabransky and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Lillie Balusek reported.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported on the monthly bingo at Stevens Convalescent Center. Mary Matula assisted her. A get well card was sent to Gaye Galetka.

Final plans were made and committees named for our Family Day. It will be held Sunday, August 13 at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville beginning at 11 a.m. with refreshments.

At noon, a delicious catered meal of barbecue brisket, sausage with the trimmings will be served with the ladies of the lodge bringing desserts. The cost will be $3 for members, $4 for nonmembers and $2 for young people, ages five through 12. The Youth Club will have a cake walk, prize drawing and bingo. Door prizes will be given. A short meeting will be held following dinner and our 50-year members will be recognized and presented their pins.

The meeting adjourned. Everyone then enjoyed ice cream and snacks brought by the members. Many thanks to the following for bringing the delicious homemade ice cream: Joe and Susan Siptak, Margaret and Albert Smotek, Shirley Kalmus, Joe and Lillie Balusek.

Door prize winner was Margaret Smotek. Members present with a birthday in April, May or June were: Emmie Jansky, Viola Holly, Helen Zabransky, Nicholas Vahalik and Adam Siptak. Winner of the birthday cake baked by Elsie Mascheck was Emmie Jansky.

Our next meeting will be at our annual Family Day on August 13.

There will be refreshments, games and door prizes also a noon meal followed by a meeting and presentation of 50year pins. Hope to see you there!

Hi! Lots of volunteers turned out Saturday, July 16, in preparation of our picnic on the following day, July 17. I would guess close to 40 people were there Saturday lending a helping hand. There were chickens to clean and potatoes to peel. Thanks to all of you who came out and worked.

Also, thanks to all you people whocame by and dropped off your canned goods and cakes. Especially thanks to all the businesses, individuals and churches that contributed to our auction. Lodge 6, Cottonwood appreciates all of you very, very much.

It was another busy, busy day on Sunday, July 16, as the picnic workers started early in the morning in preparation for all to begin by 11:30 a.m. Thanks to all of you people who came out and ate with us and especially thanks to all of you that stayed with us for the afternoon and purchased our auction items. A great big THANKS to all of you.

Lodge 32, Victoria social August 9 at Electric Co-op Plans are set for our members social which will be held Wednesday, August 9, 2000 at the Victoria Electric Co-op at 102 South Ben Jordan. 38, Kovar annual picnic September 10 Lodge

Our June meeting was called to order by President Johnnie Janak.

President Janak led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and afterwards a prayer

by Secretary Joe J. Sulak.

The minutes of May meeting were read by Secretary Joe J. Sulak and

El Camp-Hilije SPJST Lodge 40 gathered for the regular monthly meeting July 9, 2000. President Sheldon Holub welcomed all members and guest.

President Holub called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. with 27 members and one guest present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for all the sick in the community and deceased members.

President Holub gave the President's report. He reported the Lottery Commission came in June 14, 2000 to inspect the bingo records. Everything was in order and up to date. Vice President Liz Schilhab stated the inspector told her Lodge 40's books were in exceptional order and we were doing too much paper work and some steps could be eliminated. She also stated the Commissioner said we should be proud of our records.

Convention Update Loraine Kana, Leona Macha, Edmund Kana, Ardis Bacak and James Bacak all relayed information regarding the State convention. Each one thanked the membership for allowing them to represent Lodge 40. James Bacak was elected as alternate for the State Insurance Committee for District Six. Fifty-year member pins were mailed to the members not present last month.

Dr. Stephan J. Maas has recently accepted the position of Professor of Agricultural Microclimatology at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

As a member of the faculty in the Department of Plant and Soil Science, Dr. Maas will be responsible for teaching graduate-level courses and conducting research under a joint appointment with the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station and as a visiting scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Stress Laboratory on the Texas Tech campus.

Dr. Maas was born in Temple in 1950. He graduated from Temple High School in 1969, and attended Temple Junior College in 1970 and 1971. He received Bachelor's and Master's degrees in meteorology from Texas A&M University at College Station in 1973 and 1975.

Following graduation, he worked at the Blackland Research Center at Temple. He returned to graduate school in 1982 and received his Ph.D. in agronomy from Texas A&M in 1985. Dr. Maas was a member of the USDA Remote Sensing Research Unit at Weslaco, Texas, from 1984-1993. In 1993, Dr. Maas transferred to the USDA Western Integrated Cropping Systems Research Unit at Shafter, California. He served as Acting Research Leader for the USDA research unit at Shafter prior to joining Texas Tech.

Dr. Maas is the son of Llorraine and the late Edwin Maas, Sr., of Temple. Relatives in the Temple area include his brother, Commander Edwin Maas (USN-Ret.).

88, Houston posts AARP Defenisive Driving class schedule Lodge

AARP Defensive Driving Classes are being sponsored and held at SPJST Lodge 88 at 1435 Beall Street at West 15th Street. Anyone who is age 50 or above may attend. Membership in AARP or the SPJST is not required.

Completion of the course allows for a ten percent reduction in your auto insurance. The course does not count toward ticket dismissal.

Classes for the remainder of the year are scheduled at the Lodge on September 7-8, and November 30 December 1, 2000. The first class of 2001 will be on February 8-9.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on the first day, with classes running from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on those Thursdays and Fridays. A course fee of $10 per person is assessed. A minimum of 14 persons is required by AARP to hold a class.

Thanks very much to all who worked to make District Three Youth Achievement Day a success at Lodge 92 on June 15. Undoubtedly, Youth Club Reporter Dustin Harrison will report in detail on how Lodge 92 fared in the competition. We did have a good share of first, second and third place winners along with a lot of honorable mentions. We are proud of you and keep up the great participation.

We also hope everyone had a great time at youth camp. The members voted to make a special donation to the Youth Club in view of our successful efforts.

Lodge 88, Houston welcomes new member Aleena Patricia Alvarado was born October 19, 1999 to parents Yvette and Miguel Alvarado of Austin, Texas. She weighed 7 pounds one ounce and was 19 inches long. Aleena has a sister Analicia, eight years old and a brother, Zachary, four years old.

Her grandparents are William Shaffer of Austin and Jeanette Kubicek Shaffer of San Angelo and great-grandmother Helen Kubicek of Houston.

Aleena loves watching her older brother and sister play. She gets really excited and jumps up and down while laughing and making funny noises at them.

Sunshine Chairperson Florence Greer reported get well cards were sent to President Jo Prochaska, Nancy Paprskar, Jimmy Greer, Anna Leshikar and Rose Jaworski.

The trustees reported that the roof and front canopy would be replaced soon. Action is also being taken to reduce the cost electricity. If you haven't been at the lodge for a while, you will be pleased to see that tablecloths have returned. The front entrance and Heritage Room project have been deferred until the roof and canopy replacement project is finished.

We just learned of the death of our longtime and hard working lodge member, Rose Jaworski. Rose passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2000.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

92, Fort Worth Ladies Circle reports on July meeting Lodge

The regular meeting for the Fort Worth SPJST Lodge 92 Ladies Circle began at 10:35 a.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2000 at the National Hall with 43 members and three men present.

President Helen Kubala lead the Pledge of Allegiance and thanked Vice President Mary Ann Gibson for presiding during her absence in June.

The minutes for the June meeting were read by Secretary Betty Lindsay and were approved as read.

Evelyn Spacek gave her Sunshine report for June.

During the absence of Jo Prochaska hostess chairman president Helen Kubala asked for volunteer hostesses for August. They are Florence Greer, Linda Lewis and Elizabeth Howard.

Thanks to the hostesses for the great variety of meat dishes and to all the ladies who furnished the other entrees and pastries.

Hall Manager Joyce Tesar announced the upcoming activities.

On Sunday, July 23, the Classic Country and Y2K bands will be play-

ing country western music from 3 to 7 p.m. The cover charge is $7. Beans and corn bread will be served. Come and join the fun.

July birthday members are Frank Prochaska, Clara Marchioni, Charles Schneider, Claudia Koci, George Rippin and Billye Starr. The ladies sang, "Happy Birthday" and many more.

Thanks to Ima Lou LaPlant and Linda Lewis for making the bag gift game such a big success. There were over 43 prizes and the ladies had fun.

Dear Readers, I had a good time at youth achievement day in Taiton. This was my first year, and I won a lot of ribbons. I will go to state in Sewing, and I won Duke with Nicholas Vahalik as the District king.

I am looking forward to our trip to the Butterfly museum in Houston.

Lodge 133 was called to order on July 16, 2000 at Good Shepherd Hall, San Antonio, Texas by President Jarolyn Popp. The members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and then sang, "God Bless America"after a moment of silence for all deceased member, the roll call of officers showed Vice President Bill Pavliska and SecretaryTreasurer Robert Popp absent. Emil Matula was asked to fill the roles of these officers. The president then introduced Bill and Glenda Ploch as new members transferring from Lodge 29.

Emil Matula then read the minutes, which were approved. Lucille Dlugosh gave the entertainment report showing $24.50 being added to the treasury.

The treasurer's report was accepted as given.

Miloslava Phelps, the Czech reporter, informed the membes that she did not submit an article to the Vestnik for printing, but would do so in the next week.

In the absence of Vila Kurtz, the anniversary chairman, Emil Matula reported that the following couples celebrated anniversaries in July: Don and Marie Netek, 57 years; Paul and Eileen Heath, 35 years; and Charlie and Carol Kutil, 28 years.

President Goehring opened the meeting of Lodge 179, Warrenton on the 13th of July. All recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

There will not be a meeting in the month of August. The next meeting will be on September 14 at 7 p.m.

Hey, guys, what happened? Next time you cancel a lodge meeting, how about letting the reporter know about it. The meeting scheduled for July 12 was cancelled and Lodge 180 apologizes for any inconvenience this may

have caused anyone. As far as I know, our next scheduled meeting will be held on August 3 at 6:30 p.m.

Our next dance will be on August 12. The doors open at 7:45 p.m. The dance is from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

It is BYOB. The soda bar and kitchen will be open for business. The Just Us band will be your night's entertainment. Come one, come all and enjoy a night of fun and good music.

Reunions Gola Family Reunion The biannual reunion of the descendants of Karel and Amelia Gola will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2000 at the Taylor Texas SPJST hall Lodge 29 hall on Thorndale Road. The reunion registration will start at noon with the meal starting about 1 p.m. The sausage and barbecue beef will be provided. Each family is asked to bring a covered dish—vegetables, potatoes, salads, pastas, fruit trays or salads and a dessert.

Amelia and Karel Gola arrived in the port of Galveston July 7, 1913 on the ship Cassel. Amalie Gola Grigar, the only daughter in the family, was seven when her parents brought her to Texas from Moravia, Czechoslovakia. She and her brother, Cyril Gola, who was born in December 1913 in Texas after the family's arrival, live in Taylor.

In Memoriam In Memory of Arnold Hubenak Funeral services for Arnold Hubenak, 84, of Wharton, were held on Thursday, June 1, 2000 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Reverend Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in Evergreens Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary service was held on Wednesday, May 31 led by Deacon Alvin Matthys.

Mr. Hubenak died May 29, 2000 in Wharton. He was born September 3, 1915 in Pierce to Anton and Annie Orsak Hubenak. He married Rosalie Gerla on January 9, 1945 in Hilije.

Mr. Hubenak was a superintendent for Brown & Root for 30 years until his retirement in September of 1985. He was a lifelong resident of Wharton County, a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and a former member of the board of directors of the Wharton County Youth Fair.

Survivors include wife, Annie Hubenak of Wharton; daughters and sons in-law, Carolyn Hubenak of West, Columbia; Priscilla Hubenak and Kent Filleman of Austin; sister, antonia Gerla of El Campo and grandson, Samuel Fineman of Austin.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Millie Pasak and Eveline Naiser; and Brother Ed Hubenak.

Pallbearers were Anthony Gerla, Daniel Pasak, E.J. Hubenak, Bill Hubenak, Leon H. Cranek and Kris King. Honorary pallbearers were nieces, nephews and former Brown & Root colleagues.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Sovanska Linden 66, Waco, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, WILLIE ADAMCIK of West, Texas who died Friday, June 23, 2000 at the age of 85 years.

Rosary was recited at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West by the Reverend Ed Karasek. Mass of Christian Burial followed at 4:15 p.m. with Reverend Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial took place at St. Mary's Cemetery at West.

Brother Willie was a farmer until his retirement. He married Regina A.

Janek who preceded him in death on November 26, 1944. Brother Willie enjoyed gardening, working in his blacksmith shop and playing with his grandchildren. He was a member of KJT Society No. 11 and SPJST Lodge 66 since December 1959.

Brother Willie is survived by two daughters, Jeneatte Pokiuda and husband Daniel and Joyce Dulock and husband, Raymond, all of West; one sister, Mary Sykora of West; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several sisters in-law; brothers in-law; nieces and nephews.

JASKA of West, formerly of Penelope who died Saturday, July 8, 2000 at the age of 81 years.

Rosary was recited Monday, July 10, at the Church of the Nativity B.V.M. in Penelope at 10 a.m. and Mass of Christian burial followed at 10:15 a.m. with the Reverend Ron Scheible O.S.A. as celebrant. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery in Penelope.

Brother Albert farmed most of his life in the West area. He retired in 1980 and enjoyed playing taroky, dominoes and being involved in all nursing home activities.

Brother Albert was married to the former Albina Hejl who preceded him in death in December 1990. Brother Albert was a member of KJT Society No. 50 in Penelope, a member of the Catholic Church of the Nativity B.V.M. in Penelope and an SPJST Lodge 66 member since August 1971.

Survivors include his one god-son, Joe Jaska of Penelope; two god-daughters, Jeanette Ayers of Houston and Susan Janek of Mt. Calm; and several nieces and nephews.

Youth Achievement Weekend August 5 and 6 I hope that you can be a part of the 2000 SPJST State Youth Achievement Weekend, set for Saturday, August 5 and Sunday, August 6. I will be sending work schedules to the youth leaders later on in July. Also, youth club members are encouraged to enter the Special Category contest on Sunday morning at the Mayborn Center. A schedule for the weekend follows: Vestnik Projects and Contests Both the June and July projects/contests will be due August 10. The August project/contest will be due September 10.

Youth Club Membership Drive The youth club membership drive ended May 31, 2000. Awards will be presented at State YAD. All new youth club members who joined the youth club between October 1, 1999, and May 31, 2000, qualify your youth club for the awards. Youth Leaders, please report your new members to me by July 17 so your youth club can be honored at State YAD. Leaders-In-Training Workshop held in June Fifty-six teen leaders and 23 adult chaperones, representing 20 youth clubs around Texas, attended the LIT Workshop held at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children on June 2-4.

Youth Spectacular Several youth club members representing all of the seven districts around the state shared their awardwinning talents at the SPJST Youth Spectacular held Tuesday, June 13 during the convention banquet. Hats off to these young people! It was quite a show! I received so many compliments on the performances from the convention delegates and guests. Way to go, SPJST Youth!

Disbursements to Increase Several exciting decisions affecting the SPJST Youth Program came out of the XXVIII Convention held in June. One decision that directly affects the youth clubs is the increase from $1 to $2 on the quarterly reports.

This change takes place January 1, 2001. On behalf of all youth clubs around Texas, I send thanks to Lillie Matejka O'Shields of Lodge 39, Bryan for bringing this recommendation to the convention floor. Lillie served as District One Youth Counselor from 1960 to 1969.

Important Dates It is really busy in the SPJST Youth Department right now. I think I am the luckiest person in the world because I get to attend not one—but seven summer camps! I'm looking forward to seeing you all this summer.

SPJST Youth Leaders meet at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat The 2000 SPJST Youth Leaders Workshop was held March 10 to March 12 at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children, located between Salado and Killeen.

Youth leaders began arriving Friday evening for the workshop. The evening was filled with getting acquainted with everyone, games and snacks prepared by Bessie Petr of Dallas.

Saturday morning began with the youth leaders from Districts Two and Three leading the flag ceremony entitled "Explanation of the Pledge of Allegiance." Breakfast was served in the main lodge.

The dining hall at Peaceable Kingdom was destroyed by fire when it was struck by lightening in December. Another dining hall is already being built and is expected to be complete in July. State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz created an ambiance for the morning's breakfast with music, scented herbs, and candles. She then spoke about the significance of herbs.

After breakfast, youth leaders hiked up the walking trails to Peaceable Kingdom's Theater in the Woods.

President Howard Leshikar and State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny welcomed the youth leaders to the workshop. Scott Simmonds, Executive Director of Peaceable Kingdom, then welcomed the youth leaders to Peaceable Kingdom. He shared a video and spoke about Peaceable Kingdom's mission.

The first-time workshop attendees were then introduced. They were Marie Shelfer and Sharon Kovar, both of Lodge 9, Snook; Tammy Baker of Lodge 24, Cyclone; Jessica Kelner of Lodge 28, East Bernard; Amanda Greger of Lodge 47, Seaton; and Jeannine Coleman of Lodge 196, Houston-West. All were welcomed to the workshop and to the youth program.

The 2000-2001 youth program rule book updates were discussed, and important dates including deadlines, district camps and youth achievement days were also presented.

The youth leaders then learned several dance steps. Rudy and Karen Gonzales of In the Mood Ballroom in Temple demonstrated swing, cha cha, tango and country/western dance.

Following the dance instruction, State Youth Director Melanie spoke about camper/counselor contact and working with campers. A video on "Maintaining an Envelope of Safety" was then viewed.

After lunch, the youth leaders painted a canvas picture. Barbara Wilson of Wilson School of Art led the art instruction.

Kay Wilson, R.S., from Texas Department of Health then spoke about state requirements for camp.

She informed the leaders of what the state is looking for in camp inspections. She then answered questions from the leaders President Leshikar, the DYCs and the youth leaders then surprised State Youth Director Melanie and her fiance David Nauert with a shower in honor of their upcoming marriage on April 29.

Districts One and Six led the evening's flag lowering ceremony.

The day ended with the Youth Leaders Recognition Banquet. The Capitol City Mystery Players from Austin then presented a dinner theatre to "Murder on the Movie Set." Five actors and actresses entertained the youth leaders while the leaders dined.

Awards were then presented to the youth leaders. Sunday morning began with the leaders from Districts Four, Five and Seven leading the flag raising ceremony called "A Historical Prayer for Our Land." The workshop ended Sunday morning following breakfast.

I wish to thank all of the youth leaders and the presenters who participated in this year's workshop.

David and I thoroughly enjoyed the wedding shower. We were both so surprised. Thank you to everyone!

9, Snook hosts annual Family Day

88, Houston Youth Club reports on June meeting

Dear Vestnik Readers: Lodge 9, Snook had their annual Family Fun Day on July 2. Our charities for the month of July were to bring cakes for the fun day and to sell tickets. We played games and had a cake walk.

On July 16, we had our Youth Achievement Day in Caldwell. It was a very busy day. I would like to congratulate all members of Lodge 9 who participated at YAD. I received two third place ribbons. I also participated in group and individual talent.

This week we leave for camp. I'm looking forward to all the planned activities. Our next meeting will be on August 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Dear Readers, The June 21 meeting of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston Youth Club was called to order at 7:40 p.m by Krystle Bender. Stephanie Boyce lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. There were 12 members and 11 adults present.

The birthdays for June were Dustin Anderson, Krystle Bender, and Brian Graska.

Everyone was reminded to be on time for registration for YAD on Sunday, June 25 at Lodge 88.

Plans are also made for the first annual Challenge Day to be held between Lodge 88 and Lodge 196 on Saturday, July 22 at Lodge 88. All youth members are encouraged to attend for a day full of field games.

The time will be from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided by Lodge 88.

We are still in need of youth and adult volunteers to work in the kitchen on Thursday nights. Please come out and support the Youth group.

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sunday, June 25, 2000 Lodge 88, Houston hosted District Five Youth Achievement Day. Registration was from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Talent competition was first on the agenda.

We had several Individual and group talent entries this year. Everyone who performed did a great job. We also had a large number of entries in the craft categories this year. I'm sure the judges had a tough time choosing the winners.

Dear Readers, I had an exciting day at our Youth Achievement Day last Sunday in Taition.

I did my first individual talent dance to a Brittany Spears song, and sang "I Got You Babe" with my cousin, Christopher Vanek. I loved dressing up like Cher the most. I received first place ribbons in Foods and Pictorial Arts so I get to go to State for the first time. I am so excited. I had so much fun yesterday seeing my friends that we watched a videotape of it at home.

Wharton County

Czech Heritage Society reports on June meeting The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met Tuesday, June 6 at 7 p.m. in the First Christian Church fellowship hall. Fifty-five members and guests were present. Two guests were from the Czech Republic.

Marie Matcek, President, opened the meeting and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. The Czech National anthem, "Kde Domov Muj" was sung by the members and accompanied on the piano by Ethel Kuzell Meek.

Geraldine Socha, secretary, read the secretary's report. Rita Vanek, treasurer, gave the treasurers report. She stated that the Wharton County Chapter has 135 members and there are 1,583 members statewide. There was a 108 percent increase in membership in Texas this past year.

President Matcek thanked all members who participated and helped with the Czech heritage state meeting in March. The Wharton County Chapter was host for the meeting.

There were four scholarships awarded to graduating seniors from the chapter.

They were Jonathan Garret, Eric Labay, Sara Novosad and Jennifer Srubar. The students' letters of appreciation were read by Secretary Socha.

President Matcek announced that the fourth annual Czech Genealogy Conference and State Meeting will be held July 27, 28 and 29 at the Brazos Center in Bryan, Texas. The Czech Heritage Society State Meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, the 28th; it will began at 1 p.m.

Richard Chomout, Vice President and program chairman, asked everyone to have a moment of silence for the service men who died on June 6, 1944 during the D Day invasion of France in World War II. For the program, Frank Milder played the accordion and Richard Chomout accompanied him on the guitar.

The members enjoyed a sing-a-long of familiar Czech songs. Assorted dishes and desserts concluded the meeting. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 5 at the First Christian Church fellowship hall at 7 p.m.

August 5 fund raiser set for historic Shillerville Cemetery A barbecue fund raiser for the Shillerville Cemetery in Victoria County is set for Saturday, August 5 at DaCosta Sons of Hermann Hall from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plates are $5 each, consisting of brisket and sausage and all the trimmings.

Plates to go will be available. An auction begins at 6 p.m. Proceeds go towards the installation of a new water system and the maintenance of Shillerville Cemetery.

The Shillerville Cemetery began in 1897 and is located in southeastern Victoria County near Wood-Hi. A perpetual care fund was established in 1954 whereby only the interest can be used for operating expenses.
