Everyday Heroes On July 1, 2000 the Mid-Year Lodge Incentive Report is due. The Mid-Year Report is the pink fouli on page four of the 2000 SPJST Lodge Incentive Program Book. Your lodge must submit this report as prescribed in the guidelines of the SPJST Lodge Incentive Program.

State Royalty and Youth Achievement Day Please plan to attend and support the 2000 SPJST State Royalty on Saturday, August 5 and State Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, August 6. Support our youth; they are your future leaders.

Fraternalist of the Year Plan to nominate your local lodge fraternalist of the year at your September or October lodge meetings.

The application is due in December.

The Fraternalist of the Year Program is a National Fraternal Congress of America program and follows NFCA guidelines. Please use this program to recognize your local SPJST outstanding volunteer for the year 2000. The winner at the SPJST State level advances to national competition. Let your local outstanding volunteer know that their good works are appreciated.

Make sure that your candidate receives articles of recognition in your local papers.

State Volleyball Tournament Now is the time to start recruiting and talking up the 2000 State Volleyball. Tournament. The age categories have been expanded to include seventh graders and up. The tournament will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2000.

Universal Life has been called many things: • The Plan of the Future • A Computer-Age Plan • A New Concept in Life Insurance • A Plan Custom-Designed for Each Insured It's all of these things — and more. Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You select an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment.

Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs.

Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or. Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value.

Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as

the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically.

Option B Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

24, Cyclone reports on Jule meeting Lodge

Dear Readers, The. July 10, 2000 meeting started at 7:10 p.m. with Secretary Bernice Sebek calling it to order. We opened the meeting by acknowledging Trent Coots as a July birthday celebrant.

On the sick list was Dan Sebek. It was also reported that Joe Sebek is doing better after his fall Secretary Bernice Sebek read the minutes from the last meeting. A motion was made by Brian Vanicek motioned and seconded by David Nauert to accept the minutes as read.

Motion carried. Brian Vanicek then gave the Treasurer's report, followed by the Hall Manager's report and Bar Report by Wilbert Mikeska gave the bar report. Rosamond Baker gave the youth leader's report.

Congratulations! Also under old business, members decided to paint the cooling unit that sits on top of the walk-in cooler.

New Business A motion was presented by Rosamond Baker to charge an extra $50 to anyone who uses the Youth Room. The motion failed. It was reported that eight new round tables had been purchased. Members discussed purchasing 64 new chairs to go with the tables.

The menu for the October 28 Czech Heritage Day was then discussed. It was decided that we would be serving sausage boats — a combination sausage and sauerkraut/potato and bread plate — for the event. Cost of tea and dessert will be extra.

Please note that Vrazel's Polka Band will once again be playing for the polka mass which is scheduled to commence at 5:00 p.m. Father Pavlicek of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple will be the primary mass celebrant. The band will then play for a public dance from 7-10:30 p.m. A huge fireworks display will take place during the band's intermission at around 9 p.m. It should be quite an event!

In other new business, members elected Ginger Greger to the Board of Trustees, to serve in place of Laverne Cabla.

Door prizes were won by Tammy Baker, Lorene Haisler, Brian Vanicek, Willie Mae Vanicek, Ginger Greger and Wilbert Mikeska.

We adjourned the meeting at 8:40 p.m. Our next meeting will be August 15 at 7 p.m.

The convention is now behind us and several members (delegates) made reports. We have several members who are on various district committees: Frank Klinkovsky, District Two Director; Dolores Skrabanek, Insurance Committee; Edwin Pechal, Finance Committee; Ruth Hanusch, alternate, Publication Committee. I know all these members will do a good job for the district.

There are always repairs to be made around the hall and it is good to know members are willing to pitch in and help. Woodrow Marek and James Skrabanek are two members that are always on hand to keep things operating properly. Thank you, guys.

Vice President Edwin Pechal, reported progress on the barbecue cook-off which will be past history by the time this report is printed. This is always a lot of fun for cookers and spectators alike.

Gladys Marek, Treasurer, gave a very good financial report for the month of June as well as the picnic report.

Heidi Bartek, Youth Leader, gave her report. There were 17 youth club members present at the meeting. The youth have several swim parties planned at the Elks Club swimming pool. Their next meeting will be Sunday, August 13 at the swimming

pool. What a great way to have a meeting and stay cool at the same time. Congratulations to Crystal Bartek for her winning poem in the Flag Day Contest which she read at the Convention. The district winners brought their items to display for us to see. We have talented youth.

Since the State Youth Achievement Day will be held the first Sunday in August at the Frank Mayborn Convention Center, it was decided to have our regular meeting Monday, August 7 at 7 p.m.

81, Needville reports on June meeting Lodge

On June 18, 2000, the SPJST Lodge 81, Needville met for its monthly meeting. Forty members and visitors showed up for this meeting. It was nice to have the scholarship recipients and their families to come join us.

Summer is once again upon us.

Hope everyone is staying cool. Lodge 47 held its monthly meeting Sunday, July 2 beginning at 2 p.m. Dolores Skrabanek called the meeting to order.

Patrick Greger and Josef Morris brought in the flags and led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Gilbert Frenzel, Vallie Tupy and Laverne Cabla. May they rest in eternal peace.

In 1998, Brother Holasek was awarded the Legion of Honor medal by the French Government.

Brother Holasek's wife, Mayme, Brother Joe Holasek with his passed away in 1964. He married family, "Wencie" Holasek, Marie Rokusek Wachel in 1967 and daughter in-law; and son, Ray Marie passed away in 1994. Brother Holasek, all of West attend the Joe stated, that he "was lucky to have ceremony at Lone Star Hall, Lodge 54, West on June 25, had two wonderful devoted wives."

Lodge 54, West Honors 96-Year Member Christine Hruska Christine Hruska was born in West on November 16, 1904 to Ernest and Frances Nemecek. She was the fourth of six children. All of her siblings have passed except for her brother, Raymond Nemecek, who resides in West along with his wife, Lil. Christine attended grade school at The Sacred Heart Academy in Waco and went on to graduate high school from Incarnate vyord in San H Antomo, Texas.

On July ~ 7, 1934, she roamed • Raymond Hruska, Owner of Hruska's Grocery and • Hardware. Raymond was an active 1:1ember of the West Community. He became West's 18th 'J postmaster on January 1, 1956 and retired on · December 31, 1973. He was a member of West Brethren Church, Masonic Lodge 475 in which he served as secretary for 14 years, Scottish Rite (Waco Consistory), Karem Shrine Temple, West Kiwanis Club, West Chamber of Commerce, member of SPJST Lodge 54 where he served as financial secretary, West Bass Club and West Volunteer Fire Department. He departed this life on April 23, 1977.

Christine enjoyed working in her husband's grocery store and did so until Raymond became postmaster

and the store was closed. She, too, was an active member of this community. She has been a member of the SPJST Lodge 54 since 1928. She is a member of the Catholic Daughters of America No. 829, KJZT No. 11, KJT No. 31, Altar Society and the Catholic Church of the Assumption.

Her joy in life has always been to help others.

When the Kiwanis Club wanted to bri~g the Blood Drive to West, was the 1 one that signed up all of the volunteers to give of their time~ so that the Blood Drive would be successful. She became a member of the 11 Hospital AuxO iliary in 1967 and began volunteering at the hospital at its inception in 1972. She volunteered at the rest home helping with Mass on Friday, bingo on Monday and the Once-aMonth Birthday party. She was also instrumental in getting a fund started so that West could acquire their first ambulance. In 1996, Christine was honored for her numerous hours of volunteer work. At that time, she had put in 5,719 volunteer hours as a hospital volunteer.

When talk began about having a festival in West, Christine backed it one hundred percent. She was named a director of the WestFest and was in charge of the hospitality booth from the very beginning in 1975. She always said that she was never able to see a WestFest parade because of working at the fair grounds. In 1987, she was grand marshal of the parade and again, she didn't get to see the parade.

When you live as long as Christine has, you see a lot of your close friends and family members go before you. Losing a husband in 1977 was hard, but her biggest ache was losing a daughter to cancer in 1980. Margaret was 42 when she passed away and a day does not go by that Christine does not think of her.

She is proud of her six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and enjoys their visits to the nursing home where she is an active resident.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, July 19, 2000 and Liz Vyvial for making a $5,000 donation to our scholarship fund. The whole lodge and the future scholarship recipients are very grateful to your generosity. Also, under old business, President Vincent Newman told the members about the outdoor sign repair. Another workday has been set up for July 7 at 8 a.m. Edwin Susan donated some pipes for the sign repair.

Under new business, Special Funds Chairman, Gilbert Walzel announced that the two mercury vapor light poles are in dire need of repair. That will also be looked at on the workday scheduled for July 7.

Lodge 54, West member graduates from D.I.F.S. Janice Kaluza graduated with honors from Dallas Institute of Funeral Service with a degree in Funeral Directing. The-ceremony was held May 26, 2000 at Casa View Baptist Church in Garland.

She proudly received scholarships from Trigard Vault Company and the American Board of Funeral Service Education. She also received a perfect attendance award. She is employed by Aderhold Funeral Home, Inc. and will specialize in Preneed Funeral and Monument Sales.

Janice is the wife of Freddie Kaluza and they have five sons, Shawn and his wife, Naomi of Alaska, Justin and his wife, Keri, Brandon, and Janice Kaluza Jacob Nathan, all of West. She is the daughter of Herman and JoAnn Matus and daughter in-law of Alfred and Aline Kaluza, all of West. She has three granddaughters, Kylie and Karissa Kaluza of Alaska and Charity Martin of West.

Janice has been employed with Aderhold Funeral Home in West for over four years. She is very dedicated to her community and has given over 21 years of volunteer service to West Volunteer Ambulance Association and serves as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Vocations Contact Person, helped with adult and youth Christian Education and various other ministry at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption. She is also an active member of SPJST Lodge 54, West (she was the first runner-up State Fraternalist of the Year in 1999), Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 829 and St. Anne's Altar Society. She has always been known as a caregiver and would like to help families in their burden of sorrow and guide then-i'along the pathway to healing as they face making decisions at the most difficult time of the loss of their loved one.

Remembering Dad After all new business was finished, President Vincent Newman read a cute Father's Day story. It went like this: When I was: Four years old: My daddy can do anything Five years old: My daddy knows a whole lot Six years old: My dad is smarter than your dad Eight years old: My dad doesn't know exactly everything.

Ten years old: In the olden days, when my dad grew up, things were sure different.

Twelve years old: Oh, well, naturally, Dad doesn't know anything about that. He is too old to remember his childhood.

Fourteen years old: Don't pay any attention to my dad.

He is so old-fashioned.

Twenty-one years old: Him? My Lord, he's hopelessly out of date.

Twenty-five: Dad knows about it, but then he should because he's been around so long.

Thirty years old: Maybe we should ask Dad what he thinks. After all, he's had a lot of experience.

Thirty-five years old: I'm not doing a single thing until I talk to Dad. Forty years old: I wonder how Dad would have handled it. He was so wise.

Fifty years old: I'd give anything if Dad were here now so I could talk this over with him. Too bad I didn't appreciate how smart he was.

I could have learned a lot from him.

Our next monthly meeting is July 16, 2000. Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee will check on getting chicken fried steak for this meal.

88, Houston posts AARP Defenisive Driving class schedule Lodge

AARP Defensive Driving Classes are being sponsored and held at SPJST Lodge No. 88 at 1435 Beall Street at West 15th Street. Anyone who is age 50 or above may attend. Membership in AARP or the SPJST is not required.

Completion of the course allows for a ten percent reduction in your auto insur-

ance. The course does not count toward ticket dismissal.

Classes for the remainder of the year are scheduled at the Lodge on September 7-8,- and November 30 December 1, 2000. The first class of 2001 will be on February 8-9.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on the first day, with classes running from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on those Thursdays and Fridays. A course fee of $10 per person is assessed. A minimum of 14 persons is required by AARP to hold a class.

Reservations may be made by calling the lodge office at (713) 869-5767 between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

88, Houston Birthday Sisters report on July meeting

He is going to have surgery again soon.

We have a new member. Lydia Marsh has joined the Birthday Club and we are so glad to have you, Lydia.

Remember ladies, we are going to the Debra Duncan television show on Thursday, August 17th, with lunch at the Golden Corral, to be paid for by the Birthday Club. If there are extra seats, you can ask your significant other to go along but they will have to buy their own lunch. The bus will be leaving the lodge no later than 7:30 a.m. The television show is free and we have tickets.

Fiesta Dinner August 29 The ladies were reminded to bring their recyclable newspapers to the lodge for the Men's Club. They will appreciate it. Also the Men's Club is having a Fiesta Dinner on August 29th. They are always a lot of fun so get your ticket from one of the Men's Club members for $5 each.

Let's remember Bessie Lero, who fell and is in Memorial Northwest Hospital. Also John Kosut, who is having surgery next month and King Hegwood, who is having surgery next Monday.

Almeida Bravenec just returned from Lake Tahoe, Reno and San Francisco. She had a nice time but returned to Houston to the news that her son-in-law, David Caffey was in M.D. Anderson Hospital. He has cancer and has had very major surgery.

Lodge 196, Houston-West hosts Melodion Band September 24 Lodge 196 -Houston-West is going to have a special dinner and dance.

The band Melodion from the Czech Republic will be here on September 24, 2000. We will have a traditional Czech dinner, dumplings, sauerkraut, and pork roast. Lunch will start at 12 p.m. and end at 2 p.m. The band will start at 2 p.m. and play until 6 p.m.

The cost of the lunch is $5 and the dance is $6. Please bring your friends, family and even the kids. We are going to have a lot of fun so mark this on your calendars and don't forget.

Christi Circle of Women report on club, member activities Corpus

The Corpus Christi Circle of Women met July 6 at Sokol Corpus Christi for its monthly meeting and celebrated the Fourth of July with a traditional hot dog and watermelon indoor picnic. Helen Pavelka brought the sweet watermelon straight from the field and cantaloupe, too. There was every type of topping for hot dogs from homemade sauerkraut to chili, cheese, relish. You name it, it was there—not to mention salad and desserts. Hostesses were Dorothy McCoy, Marcellina Mokry, Frances Kosarek, Mattie Netek, Helen Pavelka, Patsy Dziadek and Mary Elzner. They were helped by Donika Mitchan, Dorothy's 10-year-old granddaughter, who baked the cookies and helped serve and Jerry Elzner who made the deviled eggs. What a feast!

Before the picnic luncheon, 26 members, two honorary members and eight guests stood for the Pledge of Allegiance, and led by Ella Simcik sang, "My Country Tis of Thee."

Guests were Myles Marek, Dorothy Berner, Donika Mitchan, Cassie McDonald, Teren and Chris Dziadek, Jonathon and Savannah White.

Get well cards for Lillian Covill and Anna Marie Moss were passed around for signatures. Lillian is recovering from hip surgery and I from a severe case of bronchitis and also angioplasty. Norma Baker stopped by the house before the meeting to get the Krouzek register. She was kind enough to take a thank you card I wrote and read it at the meeting also a postcard received just after our June meeting from Milly and Jerry Elzner who were visiting friends and relatives in Milly's hometown of Oil City, Pennsylvania.

After the meeting, Jerry Elzner brought me the register and also my lovely get well card with all the good wishes of my friends. He also brought notes he took of the meeting and notes taken by Helen Pavelka, so I truly feel as though I was there.

Edna Voldan asked for the group's prayers for her daughter, Edna Ann and her sister, Ruth, both of whom are ill.

A suggestion was made that members bring a donation of household goods, canned food or money for the Ronald McDonald House to our August meeting. There is a need for the same type cleaning supplies, etc. we use in our own houses. So, between now and August 3 when shopping for yourself, don't forget the Ronald McDonald House and together we can make a difference.

Jerry Elzner reported he and Clem Kasparek were at Sokol at 6:30 a.m. on the Fourth of July setting out flags along the front of the property. They created an impressive patriotic display for the second year on the Fourth.

Hopefully, a new tradition had begun.

Helen's Farewell Broadcast We were sorry to hear of an old tradition existing no longer. For many years Helen Pavelka has announced mostly Czech songs on radio station KSIX, Saturday morning Polka Time.

She dedicated may polkas and waltzes for birthdays and anniversaries of her many listeners for us in the Coastal Bend. Saturday mornings and Helen Pavelka on Polka Time were synonymous. On Saturday, July 1, Helen announced the program was the last to be broadcast. I would like to personally thank her for the many years of excellent announcing she did and the good entertainment she provided for so many listeners.

Once again, we had too many door prizes to name all who donated or won. However, I have to mention the two long stem red roses with wooden petals that absolutely looked real and were sent to us by Marsha Elzner from Austin, Also, thanks for the cantaloupe fresh off the farm and a beautiful Chinese Evergreen plant I would have loved winning "Happy Birthday" was sung to Rose Huff and Jerry Elzner. Happy birthday is sent to those not present, Mattie Netek Helen Sacky and Agnes Burge in Kerrville.

Our next meeting will be August 3.

Czech Heritage Day set for August 6 In Memory in El Campo, Texas of Patricia Velek "Pojedeme do El Campo!"

Come to El Campo, Texas on Sunday, August 6, 2000 for the First Annual "Czech Heritage Day" at the air-conditioned Knights of Columbus Hall on Armory Road sponsored by all Wharton County fraternal organizations with Czech, Moravian and Slovakian roots!

Everyone is welcome and you do not have to be of Czech descent to enjoy all the good food, music, singing, entertainment and special attractions," guarantees Dan J. Marek of El Campo who announces proceeds will benefit the $17 million Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center to be located at LaGrange, Texas.

Wharton County's SPJST lodges, KJT, KJZT, R.V.O.S. and the Wharton County Czech Heritage Society have joined hands for this eventful project to preserve and promote the history, language, culture and heritage of Texans with a common Czech and Moravian ethnicity.

Festivities begin with a noon meal of fried chicken and the trimmings served, starting at 11 a.m. Plates are $6—dine in or drive through. The famed East Bernard Czech Singers will perform during the meal.

Czechs "love to dance" so for $6, you can polka, waltz or schottische to the happy music of the Red Ravens from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Browse through craft booths featuring Slavic artistry. Savor homemade kolaches and other traditional Czech pastries. Coffee, soda water, caj (tea) and pivo (beer) will quench your thirst.

A live auction is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. as well as an allday silent auction.

More than a thousand dollars worth of valuables have been donated to a fund raising prize drawing with tickets $1 each or six for $5.

SPJST State Youth Achievement Day is Sunday, August 6 at the Mayborn Center in Temple.

Patricia Marie"Pat" Velek of Shiner, died Thursday, June 22, 2000 at the age of 49 years, ten months and 13 days.

A wake-rosary service was celebrated by the Reverend Gerry Cernoch, Saturday, June 24 at Buffington Funeral Home.

Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 25 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church with the Reverend Gerry Cernoch officiation.

Burial was at the Shiner Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Buffington Funeral Home.

She was born August 9, 1950 in Shiner, daughter of Sylvia Gertner, Siegel and the late Joe Siegel, Jr. On September 26, 1970, she was united in marriage to George J. Velek at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville, Texas.

She is survived by her husband, George J. Velek; daughter, Michelle Marie Velek of Austin; her mother, Sylvia Siegel; brother and sister in-law, Julius and Mildred Siegel; and sister inlaw and brother in-law, Estella and Delphin Hundl.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Siegel, Jr. on July 16, 1988.

Pat was a member of Shiner Lodge 10.

Proeject to Aid TCHCC Czech Heritage Day in El Campo on August 6, 2000 is an important event in a statewide fund raising campaign for the non-profit Texas Czech Heritage and Culture Center in LaGrange, Texas. The Center will include a museum/library/archives, amphitheater, living history farm, living history Texas Czech village, nature trial and picnic area where the exhibits will tell the story of Texas' Czechs and their lives from the 1830s to present day. The Amphitheater groundbreaking took place on April 8, 2000.

Construction is set to begin in early fall of 2000.

Construction is expected to begin on the other phases of the project depending upon available resources form contributions and grants, but a colorful "Walking Trail" has already been built at the picturesque site which overlooks the Colorado River and is adjacent to the Fayette County Fairgrounds in LaGrange.

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Karel Havlicek 4, Hallettsville, Texas, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed lodge sister, HILDA F. MELNAR, who passed away Saturday, July 1, 2000 at the age of 78 years. She was born on May 8, 1922 in Lavaca County to the late August Anton and Frances Rosie Peterak Vornsand. She was a homemaker, a member of Vsetin Czech Moravian Bethren Church, the Christian Sisters Society and a pink lady at Lavaca Medical Center. She was a former member of SPJST Lodge 16, Bila Hora, which recently merged with Lodge 4, Hallettsville.

Survivors include husband, Henry Edmund Melnar; one son, Henry Hank Melnar, Jr. of Lake Jackson; sister, Willie Mae Schmidt of Houston; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Walter and Royce Gene Vornsand; and sister, Frances Rose Vrana.

Visitation began at 11:30 a.m.

Sunday, July 2 at Kubena Funeral Home. Services were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 3 at Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church with Reverend Henry Beseda officiating.

Burial was in the Vsetin Cemetery.

The 2000 SPJST District Seven Youth Achievement Day and Royalty Competition was held Sunday, June 25, 2000 in New Braunfels, Texas at the Comal County Fairgrounds. Lodge 185, New Braunfels was the host and I would like to thank Theresa Haag for all of the work she did to make this a successful YAD. Thank you SPJST Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar for attending and assisting with District Seven's YAD. It is always a pleasure visiting with you.

6, Cottonwood youngsters compete in District Three YAD Lodge

Dear Readers, The youth club held their monthly meeting, Sunday, July 2. We discussed the District Three Youth Achievement Day, swim and pizza party, camp and picnic.

First, I would like to congratulate all of the youth who participated in District Three YAD. Everyone did a great job. Tyler Angelo won first in hobby kits and group talent, second in food and honorable mention in handicraft and science/education; Brittany Angelo won first in food and group talent, second in science/education, third in sewing and honorable mention in hobby kits; Brooke Craig won first in handicraft, individual talent and group talent, third in needlecraft and honorable mention in food and sewing; Bracy Craig won first in sewing and foods, third in individual talent, honorable mention in handicraft and hobby kits and runner up as duchess; Jesse Karlik won first in hobby kits and group talent and honorable mention in sewing handicraft, foods and individual talent; Celia Dobecka won second in constructed items, third in handicraft and sewing, honorable mention in food and runner up as queen; Whitney Dobecka won first in sewing and group talent, second in food, third in constructed items and honorable mention in hobby kits; Christi Sparkman won first in science/eduction, needlecraft, sewing and group talent, second in hobby kits and honorable mention in individual talent; and Traci Dobecka won first in individual talent and group talent, second in science/education and

Club Motto Contest Winner Traci Dobecka was the winner of the SPJST Youth Club Motto Contest.

We would like to congratulate her for that accomplishment. She won a $500 U.S. Savings Bond for submitting the winning motto.

The club had a swim and pizza party at the West Swimming Pool on Friday, June 30. The party was well attended and everyone had a good time swimming and enjoyed the pizza.

The youth discussed camp as to what to bring and when to be at Camp Val Verde. All of the youth were planning to attend.

Also, the annual picnic is just around the corner and the youth will be sponsoring the games. We will have a cake walk, fish pond and bingo. Everyone's help will be needed on Saturday to help set up and then on Sunday to work the games in order to make it a success.

The youth club donated aluminum cans to the West Cub Scouts. Cakes were also taken to the rest home for the monthly birthday party.

The next meeting will be Friday, August 4 at 6:30 p.m. We will be discussing baking kolaches for Westfest and the Westfest parade. Mark your calender for August 4. See you there.

Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club gets a taste of nature Dear Readers, I attended District Three camp at Val Verde July 7-10. I had a great time! My favorite activity was horseback riding. On the nature hike, we learned about plants. We tasted some edible plants that had a lemon flavor.

We were even given a recipe of how to make lemonade from the plant. The challenge course was very fun. I want to thank our group leaders, Mike and Brian, and the LITs for all the extras.

Tabor Youth Club July meeting report The New Tabor. Youth Club Lodge 17 held its July meeting on July 2 at 3 p.m. There were 19 members present and 10 adults. Chandler Malazzo led the Pledge of Allegiance and we welcomed our new member Stacy Norman. The minutes were read by Cheryl Story. Then, adults volunteered to help the kids to camp on July 21 and we agreed to leave at 10 a.m. and get to camp around noon. The district trip to Schlitterbahn has been set for August 1, 2000. Shelby Norman volunteered to make a poster of our new SPJST motto. Youth members then enjoyed ice cream as a refreshment brought by Amy Phillips.

Door prizes were brought by Amanda Morton and won by Cheryl Story, Jackie Paul, Crystal Wotipka and Amanda Morton. After the meeting, YAD practices were held. Our August meeting will held on Friday, August 4, 2000 at 6:30 p.m. due to State YAD! Kathryn Skrabanek. Reporter

Youth Club reports on July meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, Our Youth Club held its July meeting on July 2, 2000 at Taiton Hall in New Taiton. Our Vice President Shara Dluhos presided over our meeting. Our program was on the Fourth of July and/or summertime. Our craft project for this month was to make the menus and the banners for the District Six Youth Achievement Day. District Six YAD will be hosted by our lodge this year. Our charity project this month was to donate money for the desserts for the kitchen for YAD.

The Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club welcomes its newest member Clint M. Gold, son of Ronnie and Reneau Gold of New Taiton. Happy Birthday to Clint, who will be six on August 19. Obviously, he's excited about the opportunity to become an official member of the club!

During our meeting, we discussed the great time we had at camp in LaGrange. We also talked about the upcoming YAD. We are happy to be having YAD in Taiton this year. We took pictures of our new committees for the new SPJST year. We talked about having a summer outing along with our next meeting in August. We want to go swimming and eat pizza.

My brother, Clint Gold, was introduced as new member of our Youth Club at Lodge 30. Clint will be six in August. He as been coming to the meetings and activities with me and my mom since he was born. He is really very happy to be an official member.

Youth Club members Lodge 47, Seaton named king, queen Youth Club members Dear Readers, enjoy swim social On July 25, District Three held the Members of Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club held a swimming social on Tuesday July 11. We had 14 members present with three youth guests and seven adults. As we enjoyed a hamburger supper, we discussed camp. We all are looking forward to camp July 14-17 at Val Verde and the rain it will bring. Ha, ha! I am looking forward to my first year as an LIT. I would like to thank all the parents that will be preparing and selling breakfast tacos at the Barbeque Cookoff on Saturday morning for the youth because we will all be at camp.

This is our fund raiser.

Our meeting in August will be on the 13 due to State Youth Achievement Day on August 6. We will go swimming after the meeting on the 13th and remember, it is potluck. I'm looking forward to seeing all my district friends at camp.

And one more thing, it's not to early to start on the Christmas Ornament Contest that will be held in the fall.

Overall, it was a very fun day and both the king and queen from Lodge 84 are looking forward to the State YAD competition.

Dear Readers, On Sunday, June 25, District Three held their annual Youth Achievement Day at Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Many people showed up to see amazing talents, tasty foods and cunning performances.

The July meeting of Lodge 177, Academy Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2000

by President Sara Wagner. Laura Degallado led the Pledge of Allegiance. We had nine members and three adults present.

We discussed our summer trip.

Eight members and two chaperones went to Sea World and then Schlitterbahn the next day. We had a great time. Next, we will be going to camp July 14-17. We will try to have a car wash/bake sale on July 29 at the Taylor Wal-Mart.

We had a great turn-out at YAD. We had 21 entries in crafts and placed on 14 of these. We also have a individual talent and group talent advancing to state. Our poster is also advancing to state competition.

Happy birthday this month to Abby Blevins. Our meeting was adjourned at 2:21 p.m. Our next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, August 13.

Annual Czech Heritage Society of Texas genealogy conference July 27 - 29 Fourth

A three-day genealogy conference, hosted by the Brazos Valley Counties Chanter of the Czech Heritage Society will celebrate 150 years of Czechs in Texas.

The conference will be held at the Brazos Center, 3232 Briarcrest Drive, Bryan, Texas on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 27 - 29.

A total of 23 speakers, including Dr. Mirek Koudelka and Dr. Karel Kysilka of The Czech Republic, Karen Hobbs of Colorado, Leo Baca, Dr. Robert Skrabanek, Dr. Clinton Machann, Dr. Gary Kocurek, Reverend John Gantt and many others from the state of Texas, will conduct 35 speaker sessions, including the history of Czech in Europe, Military Records, Czech Immigrant Records, Early Life of Czech in Texas, Researching the Czech Republic, etc.

The genealogy conference will be held in conjunction with the State Czech Heritage Society Summer meeting, which will be held on Saturday, July 29.

For those attending only the State meeting, there will be exhibits, research, vendors, etc. Saturday morning, beginning with registration at 8 a.m.
