Social Members: A Coming Thing There's Still a Few Questions Delegates to the Twenty-Eighth Convention broadened the definition of what it means to be a "social member" in the SPJST by approving the By-Law Committee recommendation to amend Article 1, Section J. Previously, the term "social member" referred to an individual who was uninsurable and who had been designated as a "social member" prior to 1988. Effective January 1, 2001, the definition will include any "person who the lodge votes in and pays his or her local lodge dues and assessments, if any, annually in advance."

That's a really big change. Essentially, the new bylaw would enable a lodge to enroll an insurable person without that individual first being required to purchase an SPJST insurance certificate or annuity. Depending on how this rule is incorporated, it could have a positive effect - especially for lodges that have strong fraternal programs in place. As John Anderson of Lodge 191, Lufkin stated during debate on the amendment, active social members make excellent sales leads.

The decision to allow for social memberships isn't a new thing. Several fraternal societies, including The International Association of Foresters, Royal Neighbors and Knights of Columbus - to name a few - promote social memberships. In fact, in the Knights of Columbus, social members outnumber benefit members by a margin of nearly two to one! In each case, social members - and their families - provide their fraternal orders with prime sales leads.

The by-law change that will provide for social membership in the SPJST goes into effect January 1, 2001. In visiting with Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir last week, he acknowledged that several questions relating to "social memberships" need to be resolved by the Supreme Lodge when they meet next week and again in October. For instance: What limiting factors - if any - will be placed on social membership in a local lodge? How will the by-law relate to young people who are enrolled as social members and their eligibility to participate in the youth program? And finally, what cost, if any, will social members be expected to pay to receive the Vestnik?

In spite of these questions and others which are sure to arise, social memberships in the SPJST appear to be a coming thing. Watch for updates and Supreme Lodge commentary on this topic in the coming weeks.

Youth Achievement Days Before you know it, State Royalty Competition and State Youth Achievement Day will be here. SPJST State Royalty is Saturday, August 5 at lodge 24, Cyclone and SPJST State Youth Achievement Day is Sunday, August 6 at the Mayborn Center in Temple. For those of you who are planning an overnight stay in Temple, hotel information for the big weekend appears on page 16.

Sunday, June 25 was a busy one for the youth program as Districts Two, Three, Five and Seven all held their respective royalty and YAD contests.

I had the opportunity to attend the District Two event held at Lodge 29, Taylor and was impressed with the caliber of talent that wa q. displayed.

The presentations macie by the royalty contestants were especially well-stated. In her speech, Dawn Capps, age 14, of Lodge 47, Seaton stressed the value of teamwork within the SPJST. It's a message of hope and trust that bears repeating: "SPJST has given me a master key that will unlock many doors in my future. This key has unlocked the door that helps me grow as an individual .. .

Having built confidence in myself I can use the master key to unlock the door to the value of teamwork .. .

SPJST has taught me three things about teamwork: 1. You don't have a team until everyone makes a commitment to be there; 2. Work together when the weak spot is discovered; and 3. Those who finish last are not losers until they quit . . ."

Thanks to all of this year's royalty and YAD contestants for sharing your insight and creativity with us. Keep up the good work! Observing you compete in such a wide range of talents makes me wish we had a comparable event to offer our adult members! Who knows? Maybe some day we will.

Annuity I participants should consider transferring balance to Annuity II Program In addition to offering quality insurance products at affordable prices, the SPJST offers its members a quality annuity program. Current rates are posted in the Vestnik. The Annuity II Program — which includes certificates issued after after April 1, 1990 -- is paying an annualized rate of 6.3 percent. The Annuity I Program, which consists of certificates issued prior to April 1, 1990 is paying 5.3 percent.

It's Easy to Do If you hold an Annuity I certificate and want to transfer your money to the higher paying Annuity II program, making the transition is simple. Just call the SPJST Home Office at 1 (800) 727-7578 and ask to speak to Kathy Fritz in the Insurance Department. She will send you the paperwork needed to make the switch. What's more, if you have been participating in the Annuity I program for at least five years, you are considered to be out of the program's "penalty phase." As such, you will be able to transfer your Annuity I account balance to the Annuity II program and make withdrawals from your new Annuity II account without an interest rate penalty.

What's the Difference?

The biggest difference between the Annuity I Program and the Annuity II Program is the guaranteed rate of interest. The Annuity I program offers a guaranteed rate of 5 percent. The Annuity II program offers a guaranteed rate of 3 percent. If you have any questions related to transferring your annuity account or, perhaps, opening an SPJST annuity account, please call your local lodge sales representative or the Insurance Department at 1 (800) 727-7578.

Senior Life: When You Need More H ow much is your life worth?

And how much did you insure it for? Two tough questions. Questions that get even tougher as you get older.

Now, thanks to SPJST's two Senior Life insurance plans, there may be some answers for you.

The SPJST Senior Life Plan is for people in good health who can correctly answer "no" to the general health questions on the application. The SPJST Senior Life Graded Benefit Plan is for people with some health problems but are still found to be eligible.

This plan has some limitations on coverage.

The Senior Life Graded Benefit provides an accidental death benefit for the full amount of the certificate immediately for the first three years. The death benefit from other causes is the refund of premiums, plus 20 percent. After

three years, both Senior Life plans provide exactly the same benefit.

No doctor's examination is necessary and the coverage cannot be canceled, so long as premiums are paid.

Moreover, the Senior Life plan has a Guaranteed cash value and a certificate loan benefit.

Under the terms of the Senior Life Plan, the smallest amount of insurance that you can purchase is $5,000. Just as an example, the cost per $1,000 coverage for a 63-year old male would be $6.23 monthly and $69.21 annually.

For $5,000 insurance, that would amount to a monthly premium of $55.85 and an annual premium of $620.35.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Falr3ttev iile and Fayette County CHS picnic receives repeat performance Well, if you want it to rain, just schedule a picnic in June and see what happens. You may recall last year the SPJST Lodge 1 and Fayette County Czech Heritage Society had their annual picnic at Polansky Lake at Rek Hill and everyone was drenched from head to toe. Well, guess, what? It was a repeat performance this year, but everyone was prepared this year with rain gear in hand — the good old trusty umbrella. Everyone enjoyed a delicious covered dish meal and related stories of the past. Both Edwin Jurecka and James Kovar talked about their trips to the Czech Republic recently.

Everyone disbursed quickly remembering the previous years' experiences as the clouds moved in and the thunder and lightning came quickly. There was no singing in the rain this year. It was a no show because Lee Roy Matocha and George Koudelka must have known what was going to happen and decided it was best to stay high and dry with their musical instruments.

4, Hallettsville making plans for August Family Day Lodge

Dear Members, Our lodge met Sunday, June 18, 2000 at the Legion Tap Room at 3 p.m. with President Joe Siptak presiding.

Recognized and welcomed were Henry and Hilda Melvar and Ellanora Fojt transfer members to our lodge from Bila Hora.

Mary Matula led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call showed Youth Leader Shirley Kalmas and Assistant Susan Siptak not present due to meeting at camp.

Secretary Margaret Smotek read the minutes to the last meeting which were approved. Correspondence followed.

Alton J. Fojt will also receive a 50-year pin in August. Our lodge had a new member, Melanie Kay Mikush.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported on the monthly bingo held for the residents of Stevens Convalescent Center. Helpers were Jo Ann Matula, Lillie Balusek, Evelyn Sklar, Evelyn Holy and Constance Prasek. Elsie also told the members that a resident there and member of our lodge, Agnes Mikush turned 100 years young on May 15. She had been recognized and honored by lodge when she turned 96 years for outliving her SPJST policy.

Helen Zabransky mentioned that she, Mary and Frank Matula made inroom visits to the residents at Hallettsville Rehab and Nursing Center.

Our delegates to the state convention in Temple, Joe Siptak, Annie Vahalik and Margaret Smotek reported on its proceedings and activities. Joe was elected to represent District Six on the By-law Committee with Annie as alternate.

Flag Day was June 14th. Veterans present were Frank Matula, David Wagner, Joe Balusek and Albert Smotek.

Our annual Family Day will be held Sunday, August 13 at the American Legion Hall beginning with a catered noon meal of barbeque brisket, sausage and the trimmings. It was vote to charge $3 for members, $4 for nonmembers and $2 for children ages five thru 12. A meeting, games and door prizes are also planned. Our 50-year members will also be honored.

The meeting adjourned followed by games and refreshments. Door prize winner was Evelyn Holy and a special Father's Day prize went to David Wagner.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 9 at the City Park in Hallettsville beginning at 2 p.m. Following the meeting will be an ice cream social.

Members may bring snacks and also their lawn chairs. April May and June birthdays will be recognized and a cake given. Hope to see you there!

Public Accounts Carole Keeton Rylander. She is one dynamic speaker. The SPJST State King and State Queen gave their speeches. I believe they all received standing ovations.

The entertainment for the evening was an SPJST Youth Spectacular which was just awesome. What talent these youngsters have! Young people from seven districts performed dances, skits, gymnastics and dramatic performances. They were all superb in what they did.

The fellowship, the dinner and the program were all just wonderful.

District Three YAD Several from Lodge 6, Cottonwood attended the District Three Youth Achievement Day on Sunday, June 25. It was held at Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas and was enjoyed by everyone. They served a great meal.

Several of our youth won various positions in their talent and crafts.

They work hard and do great things.

Tracie Dobecka was recognized and honored with a "Special Certificate" in one of the various contests she had entered. I did not take notes and you will probably read about it in the Youth Section of the Vestnik at a later date. I just wanted to congratulate Tracie and all the youth in their achievements. Keep up the good work.

It will not be long before summer camp at Val Verde starts. I know that all of the youth are looking forward to it. District Three Camp is July 7-10, McGregor, Texas. Then after camp, the youth will be busy with our upcoming picnic.

SPJST Lodge 6 will have their 103rd Annual Picnic on Sunday, July 16, starting with a delicious fried chicken/sausage meal at 11:30 a.m.

Games and Auction start at 1:00 p.m.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Lodge 17, New members attend Tabor hosts Tarok convention Tournament July 15 Hi! There were 18 members from Lodge 6, Cottonwood, attending the Twenty-Eighth SPJST Convention Banquet on Tuesday night, June 13, 2000, at the Frank W. Mayburn Center in Temple, Texas. Some had been at the convention since Sunday and others came to enjoy the banquet that evening.

Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard to meet July 9 Dear Members, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its next regular scheduled meeting on the 9th on July in the meeting room at 106 Leveridge Street at 2 p.m. On the agenda will be reports from the XXVIIIth SPJST Convention and plans for the 50-year membership pin presentations along with regular business needing immediate attention.

A standard fare will be observed for the fraternal hour buffet luncheon.

Report of May Meeting In May, the meeting was held on the third Sunday, the 21st. It convened with quorum present. Some items of business were handled quickly and items that were scheduled to take place in the convention were discussed.

Also, the June meeting was placed into suspension because of the convention.

It was said there may be a June meeting at the convention site if a quorum would be present.

A fraternal hour buffet luncheon was held after the business meeting.

No business or reports were given in a brief June meeting at the convention site.

Lodge 51, Ellinger reports on special June meeting Ellinger SPJST Lodge 51 will hold a lodge dinner July 9 at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Hall. A brisket barbecue and sausage and all the trimmings meal will be served at 12:30 p.m Refreshments will be served at 12 p.m. The meal will be served to members and their immediate families (living at home.) Fifty-year pins will be presented to the following members: Edna Lee Orsak, Cynthia Niesner, Larry Marusik, Larry Bartosh and Peggy Utley.

66, Waco reports on June meeting Lodge

The meeting was called to order by President John Engelke on June 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall, Elm Mott, Texas. All officers were present with the exception of Vice President Mary Alice Langlotz. There were 31 members and two guests present at today's meeting. Visitors were Henry Veselka

and District Three Director Johnnie Krizan. Please come again.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and motto.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the Monday, May 15 meeting and they were approved as read.

Due to the absence of our 50-year members, Rose Parma and Robert Pavelka, Sister Darlene Engelke will mail the 50-year pins to them.

Chairman of the Board Johnnie Gaidusek had Sister Bonnie Pruitt read the minutes of the June 7 Board of Directors meeting.

Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, Sister Dorothy Gerlich, reported that the committee met on June 7. Today they are serving fried chicken, slaw, potato salad, tea and coffee. The members brought desserts.

For the July 16 meeting, members are asked to bring sandwiches. The Entertainment Committee will bring desserts. For the August meeting, they will serve hot dogs with all the trimmings. Sister Gerlich thanked Sister Libbie Parma for donating the Mother's Day and Father's Day gifts.

Sister Emma Ceska reported on Cheer and Condolences. She read a thank you note from the family of Batt and Anna Vernetti and a thank you note from Sister Irene Mueller and her family on the death of their mother, Lena Glatter. Sister Ceska sent sympathy cards to Irene Dryer on the death of her husband, Ladis B. Dryer; to Bennie and Darlene Engelke on the death of their son in-law, Henry Bruce Herring; to John, Diana and Justin Engelke on

the death of brother in-law and uncle, Henry Bruce Herring; to Sister Irene Mueller, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Weinberger, Tony and Doris Glatter on the death of their mother, Lena Glatter.

May they rest in peace. Sister Ceska also sent a get well card to Eddie Ray Banik, son of Albert and Rosemary Banik, who was injured in a car accident. Please keep him in your prayers.

Brother Bennie Engelke, Chairman of the Grievance Committee reported no grievances.

There was no insurance report.

Youth Club Report Youth Leader, Sister Debbie Galler, gave the youth report. The youth have a new state motto. They had two visitors, Nick and Kimberly Cullinton today and they also became members of the Youth Club. Today, the youth are honoring Mother's and Father's Days with gifts. Justin Engelke won first place on the tee-shirt design in his age group. Amanda Wallace and Eric Wallace received certificates on their entries. Justin Engelke, Douglas Galler, Kevin Galler, Mykala Yates and D.J. Yates received certificates from the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund. In July, the youth are going swimming.

Today, the birthday cake was brought

by Eric Wallace and the game by the Weeks family.

Eugene Gerlich gave the bookkeepers report. He also stated that he will be resigning from the Board of Directors and the Bookkeeping position because he and his wife are moving to Arlington in July. Brother George Pauling thanked Brother Gene for all his hard work he has done for the lodge in the past. President John Engelke asked if anyone was interested in the bookkeeping position to please let him know as soon as possible.

Thanks was given to Brothers John Engelke, George Pauling, Milan Dujka, Paul Neslony and Sister Diana Engelke for cleaning the hall after the wedding on Saturday night.

Sister Darlene Engelke reported on the 28th Convention. There were 285 delegates plus spouses and children present. The fish fry, banquet and the Youth Spectacular were excellent. The 501(c)(3) SPJST Library, Archives and Museum passed and Brother Louis Hanus donated $100,000 toward the cause. Brother John Engelke is on the committee to start the new 501 (c)(3) Education and Nature Center for anyone to enjoy.

Convention Updates President John Engelke reported that Gene McBride is now Vice President at

the Supreme Lodge. Brother Leshikar was re-elected President, Sister Lanita Anglin Secretary-Treasurer and Brother Jerry Mikulas Financial Secretary. Brother Johnnie Krizan was re-elected as Director of District Three.

Congratulations to all.

We were honored to have Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director, Present with us today. He thanked the membership and delegates for reelecting him as their Director for another term. He commented on Brother John Engelke being the new District Three Director for the 501 (c)(3) Education and Nature Center.

He also reported on Brother Michael Galler being reelected to the Finance Committee.

Trust Fund Scholarship Awarded Sister Libbie Parma of the Trust Fund presented $200 Scholarships to Justin Engelke, Alicia Neslony and Amanda Wallace today. Justin, Alicia and Amanda gave wonderful speeches commenting on their achievements since being members of the SPJST and the Youth Club. Two more members will receive the $200 Scholarships in July. Sister Gladys Yates thanked everyone for making donations to the Libbie Parma Trust Fund.

The youth presented gifts to all the mothers and fathers present at today's meeting. Thank you, youth, for your thoughtfulness. The winner of the Mother's Day gift was Sister Kay Weeks and the Father's Day gift winner was Brother Ben Pusteovsky.

Members present celebrating June birthdays were Darlene Engelke, Emma Ceska, Jodie McAdams and Tom Weeks. Congratulations to Johnnie and Polly Gaidusek on their 53rd wedding anniversary and to John and Diana Engelke on their 26th wedding anniversary.

The adult prize winner was Bennie Engelke. The 50-50 winner was Johnnie Gaidusek, Sr. The next Board of Directors and Entertainment meeting will be on July 5 at 7 p.m. The next lodge meeting will be held on July 16 at 2:30 p.m.

84, Dallas reports on June meeting

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Faye Rejcek was absent, but asked for hours donated for the betterment of those in need, be mailed in by July 8.

Sales Rep Emil Petr announced July 10 is scheduled for a meeting per Brother Kucera. A flyer for details is being mailed.

President Yeager announced a committee meeting July 16, Sunday, at 3 p.m. Please attend and bring a side dish and dessert to go with the main course. She invited all youth leaders to be present for input of ideas that the meeting needs. Our monthly meeting is on July 17 at 7:30 p.m.—please come.

Lodge 84 Secretary Sister Evelyn Salac has resigned her position due to her health. Tears were shed by members at the meeting when President Yeager read the note. Sister Evelyn held this position for many, many years. She will be missed sitting between President Yeager and Financial Secretary Carlyn Ondrusek at the desk up front. We thank her for a job well done and wish the best for her until good health returns.

Congratulations to Mary Steinman of Lodge 154, Fort Worth on being elected chairperson of the District Three Caucus at the Convention. She did a great job.

Internet Updates Enjoyed listening to Alfred Vrazel on the way to the convention. If you are on the Internet, you can tune him in at KMIL.com and the same goes for Johnnie Krajca's Polka Show at KBEC.com . Along those same lines, Cheryl Hubenak is getting Lodge 92 on the Internet as well. As soon as she does so, you will be able to view our activity schedule etc.

Apologies to Helen Kubala for being left out of the list of delegates to the SPJST Convention in the lodge history account of the last four years. On the bright side, you got to be mentioned all by yourself.

Beseda Dancers perform at Texas Folklife Festival The Lodge 130 Texas Czechs Beseda Dancers performed for the 30th annual Texas Folklife Festival on June 2-4, 2000 and have performed at about 28 of the festivals.

Introductions Our dancers included our beseda director Martha Vrla and husband Stanley Vrla, Ken and Suzanne Vrla, John and Sonseearay Vrla, Keith, Nancy, Billy, and Katie Shinn, Richard Brown, Roseann Parma, and David, Kellie, Josh, Jill, and Jeremy Hlavenka. Our performances were enjoyed both by our dancers and a very receptive audience.

presents 50-year pin at June meeting Catherine Hechler was the only one of this year's Lodge 139 50-year members attending the June 7 meeting at E.J.'s Restaurant. Catherine has been an active and faithful member of the lodge through the years. She was presented her 50-year pin by Lorenda Baldwin. A luscious cake, baked by Lorenda for the occasion, was served after the meal.

Scholarship Presented It was announced that Laura Vrazel, the 2000 recipient of the Lodge 139 Scholarship Award, received the award at the Danbury High School awards Program. The presentation was made by lodge President Lonnie Lostak. Laura received several other awards which she will put to good use when she enrolls at Baylor University this fall.

A short period of silence was observed in memory of lodge brother John Parry Lauzon who passed away recently.

Details of the upcoming SPJST Convention were gone over and discussed at length before adjourning.

Lodge 142, Houston meeting, member social July 9 Our meeting was called to order on Sunday, June 4, 2000 at 2 p.m. by President Keith Kieschnick. We had 30 members present. All stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Secretary Alice Jochen read the roll call of officers' and Board Of Trustees.

She read the minutes from the previous meetings which stand approved as read.

Our lodge had one new member, Del Rosario Mata. The sales rep is Robert Kieschnick with one member.

All officers reports were given and all committee reports were read.

Meeting Reminder The members were reminded by President Kieschnick that our next meeting on July 9 will begin at 1 p.m. to be followed by a member social.

Birthdays for June are Elizabeth Hermis, Henry Hermis, W.J. Schmidt, Keith Kieschnick. There were no anniversaries in June.

Five cash prizes went to Ruth Kieschnick, Bernice Walther, Pat Schleider, Dorothy Tumis and Lorraine Motl. Four refreshment prizes were awarded to Rita Hermis, Elmo Walther, Sidon Tumis and Dennis Hermis.

We have a total of nine teams entered cooking brisket, chickens, ribs, beans and potato salad. Plus, we had three additional entries in just beans and potato salad. Lodge 148, El Maton receives First Step award The officers of Lodge 148 would like to thank all those who attended the chicken spaghetti dinner on June 3, 2000. We are ready to start planning for our dinner for 2001.

A special thanks to Gay Lynn Thurmond for organizing and directing the cooking of the dinner.

Fifty-year pins were announced and handed out. Jim Wiest presented Lodge 148 with a "First Step" award.

Gay Lynn Thurmond and Diana Johnson were recognized for attending the FIC classes at Lodge 40.

Sister Sylvia Laznovsky reported highlights of the Sokol Zizka Slet held in Dallas, Texas. It was great, in spite of the rainy weather. Sylvia Laznovsky reports that approximately 45 from the Sokols from Dallas, Ennis and Fort Worth will be attending the All Sokol Slet in Prague at the end of June and the first part of July. A tour of 39 is departing on June 26.

Sister Lydia Pavelka brought a few Nas Cesky Zivot (Our Czech Life) for us to share. It is published quarterly by The Texas Heritage and Cultural Center, Inc., LaGrange, Texas.

Sisters, remember to bring your trash and treasure items for our white elephant July meeting.

Our next meeting will be July 13, 2000. My pet story will be in my August letter.

Ennis Sewing Circle reports on June meeting The Circle met June 8, 2000.

Twenty-six members were present.

Visitors were Laurie Vlk, Vlasta Getchell, Jerry Zmolek and Charles Kosarek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes. Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the financial report, both reports were approved as read, Sunshine Chairperson Eleanor Pelzel reported that a get well card and money gift was sent to Sister Vallie Tupy. A birthday

Donations Noted Donations received included a money gift from Jerry Koubek at our May meeting, money gift from Rosie Bednar in memory of Sister Stacie Hejny, Eleanor Pelzel for having a quilt quilted, Sister Liddie Pavelka, table napkins and card for us to sign for Vallie Tupy, Sister Hattie Mouckacoffee cups and dessert plates. Sister Rosie Bednar donated a quilt which was quilted at our June meeting for the Telico Fire Department. Rosie also donated pins and needles for the quilters. A quilt will be quilted for Sister Betty Stegall at the July meeting.

A major goal of the LAM is to preserve the Czech cultural heritage. It also stands as a memorial to the pioneer Czech forefathers and mothers who settled Texas.

SPJST Convention delegates took time out from their proceedings for a Flag Day observance on June 14. During the observance, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar invited all past service men and women to step forward to be recognized. The response was overwhelming. SPJST extends humble thanks to these and all our military personnel for the time they have given in defense of freedom and democracy.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy The officers and membership of Lodge 24, Cyclone express their sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, LAVERNE LOUISE CABLA. Services for LaVerne Louise Cabla, 64, of Oscar community were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at Seaton Brethren Church with the Reverend Al Newby officiating.

Burial was in the Seaton Cemetery.

She died Friday, June 9, 2000 at her residence.

She was born in Bell County to John R. and Sydonie Marek Skrabanek.

Mrs. Cabla worked at Baugh Shoe Factory and the VA Hospital canteen.

She was a member of RVOS No. 1, where she served as an officer. Served on the board of Seaton Cemetery Association, a VFW Ladies Auxiliary member and a Christian Sister at Seaton Church.

Being a member of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone, she was a past President and she served on many committees.

At the time of her death, she was Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator, kitchen chairperson, secretary of the board and a delegate to the convention which she couldn't attend due to her illness. She served in all district and state levels of SPJST. She will be missed at our lodge.

She spent her entire life in Oscar community.

Survivors are her husband, Jerry Cabla of Oscar; daughter, Arleen Mayeux of El Reno, Oklahoma; mother, Sydonie Skrabanek of Holland; brother, Lawrence Skrabanek of Holland; sister, Linda Schneider of Holland; and one grandchild.

May our departed sister rest in peace.

of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, MARY M. LANDER, age 82, of West, who passed away Thursday afternoon, June 15, 2000 in West Rest Haven.

Rosary was recited 1 p.m. Sunday followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 1:15 p.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Rev. Ed Karasek, as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery in West.

Mrs. Lander was born June 12, 1918 in West and had lived in the West area all of her life. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 829, K.J.Z.T. Society No. 11 and the SPJST No. 6 of Cottonwood. She

was also a faithful member of the Brides of the Most Blessed Trinity, a Blessed Apostolate that prays for priests.

Mrs. Lander loved to cook and bake kolaches and had cooked for numerous wedding receptions.

She is preceded in death by three brothers; John Mynar, Frank Mynar and Joe Mynar, Jr.; two sisters; Rosie Urbish and Annie Mynar and grandson, Paul Wayne Lenart.

Mrs. Lander is survived by three daughters; Margaret Lenart and husband, Robert Sr., Henrietta Mach and husband Mike and Mary Lander, all of West; one brother, Edward Mynar of West; five sisters; Lillie Hromadka, Frances Chase, Willie Mae Cervenka, Agnes Atkins and Josephine Smith, all of West; five grandchildren, Michele Mach, Christy Mach, Kevin Mach, Robert Lenart, Jr.,and Sherry Lenart; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Active pallbearers were Jered Rochester, Kevin Mach, Robert Lenart, Jr., Jeff Mullen, Brandon Kaluza and Justin Kaluza.

Honorary pallbearers were Lillie Marie Mynar, Mary Veselka, Mary Frances Kolar, Geraldine Kolar, Mary Ann Pavlovsky, all nieces and nephews and Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 829 of West.

The family requested that memorials be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church Building Fund or to the West Volunteer Ambulance Association.

n Memory of Cornelia Hejl Cornelia Hejl, 91, of Taylor died May 15, 2000, at Seton Medical Center in Austin.

She was born in Temple, Texas, on September 12, 1908 to John and Teresa Bedrich. She married Frank Hejl on March 28, 1928 and lived in this area most of her life.

A devout member of th Brethren Church, Mrs. Hejl was a charter member of the Christina Sisters and a Sunday School teacher of the confirmation class for eighteen years. She served as organist and pianist of the Brethren Church for many years and was a Mutual Aid member of the Unity of Brethren Churches. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as life long friends in Taylor.

Services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at the Taylor Brethren Church with the Reverend James Hejl officiating.

Burial followed at Taylor City Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Taylor Brethren Church, P.O. Box 351, Taylor, Texas, 76574.

Arrangements were by Providence Funeral Home, Taylor.

In Memory of Johnnie J. Adamek Johnnie J. Adamek, 78, of Frelsburg, died June 11, 2000 at Herman Memorial Southwest Hospital in Houston.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 14 at 10 a.m. at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus with burial in Kaiser Cemetery in Brushey. The Reverend Bill Mosley officiated.

Born October 15, 1921 in Ellinger, he was the son of John and Mary (Supak) Adamek. He married Earline Lilie September 6, 1949. She preceded him in death March 6 of this year.

A painter and carpenter, he was a Lutheran, member of SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include a daughter and son in-law, Shirley and Jimmy Ryba of Weimar; son, Larry Adamek of Lone Oak; sister, Leona Supak of Ellinger; two brothers, Daniel and Henry Adamek of Ellinger; four grandchil-

Reunions Hrabal Family The 28th Annual Hrabal Reunion will be held at the SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood Hall on Saturday, July 8, 2000 located three miles east of West on FM 2114.

The hall opens at 9 a.m. with socializing to 1 p.m. Snacks and drinks are furnished and served all day. In the afternoon there will be games for the youngsters, domino tournaments for the older ones or whoever wishes to play.

A business meeting will be at 3 p.m., followed by a raffle and auction. Those who would like to donate a prize to the auction or raffle will be very much appreciated. This will help raise funds for the reunion. Please designate if the contribution is for the raffle or auction.

There will also be a door prize. Bring pictures, scrapbooks or anything that you would like to share with others.

The dinner will be catered with all the trimmings and served beginning at 1 p.m. this year, so please try to remember this and come early.

Visiting will be as long as you wish to stay. As always, there will be a good-bye breakfast on Sunday morning at Damon's Restaurant in the Waco Hilton, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Dusek-Shenkir Families The annual reunion of the descendants of John and Frances Dusek Shenkir will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2000 at the Seaton Community Center, Seaton, Texas.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m.

Last year's reunion was very poorly attended with some 40 family members present. If we are to continue this reunion, we need more participation from more families.

Lodge 215, South Plains has recently formed a new youth club. Janeece Williams has been elected to be the youth leader. She will be assisted by Michelle Williams.

District Two Youth Counselor posts summer camp check list Dear Youth Members, The week we have all been waiting for is nearly here, District Two Camp at Camp Val Verde and for the McGregor farmers, here comes the rain.

Our camp begins on Friday, July 14 at 10 a.m. We ask that campers arrive no earlier than 9:45 a.m.

There is much preparation before you arrive and this will enable us to have time for all the preparation for our exciting weekend. Camp will end on Monday July 17 at 10 a.m.

Parents, please arrive between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., we have activities planned until that time.

Go Hawaiian This year our camp will be a Hawaiian theme. We have many exciting activities planned. To begin our theme, we will have very special guest on Saturday. Last year we were honored to have Jim Honea with Scott and White Medivac visit

us in the helicopter. This year he will visit us again with bigger and more exciting adventure. Jim is also a certificated scuba diver instructor.

He, along with another team member, will spend Saturday in the pool instructing snorkeling and scuba diving. Campers ages 6-10 will have snorkeling instructions in the pool.

You will need to purchase a snorkel kit and bring it with you to camp. A snorkel kit can be purchased at Wal Mart for $4.99 to $7.99. Campers ages 11-high school seniors will be instructed in scuba diving in the pool. Jim will provide all equipment necessary for scuba diving.

All campers must have a permission/release form signed by parents. You will not be able to participate without this form.

This form can be obtained from your Youth Leader or myself. Since the pool will be in use all day Saturday with snorkeling and scuba instructions, swimming actives will be altered to a trip to the movies in Waco. A special permission slip must be signed by your parents.

We are really looking forward to these added activities and know that you will enjoy each of them.

Jake Holland ran for King and I was his Duke. He did not win the crown, but he is still a winner to me! I won First Place in the Food category.

The 1999-2000 SPJST State Royalty Court participated in the 2000 Ennis Polka Festival Parade held May 27. State King Paxton Davies of Lodge 92, Fort Worth and State Queen Colette Kenney of Lodge 84, Dallas rode in a white 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible driven by District Three Director Johnnie Krizan. Carrying the banner were State Duke William Fuller and State Duchess Kayla Kenney. Riding as passenger in the car was State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny. Following the parade, the royalty enjoyed lunch and dancing at Lodge 25, Ennis.

Music pioneer Adolf Hofner dies at 84 Adolph Hofner, the Western swing pioneer who popularized "CottonEyed Joe," died June 2 in San Antonio. He was 84. ""He had cancer of the left lung," said his wife, Susan.

"At about 3, he woke me up and he said, 'Honey, I love you. I want to thank you for being so good and helping me through all of this.' Then he told me to call all the kids and tell them to come home. They all came over, and he went real peacefully."

Antonio in 1928. A singer and guitarist, Hofner came to musical prominence in the '30s with Jimmie Revard and his Oklahoma Playboys.

Hofner, who fused country, western, pop, jazz and Czech and Bohemian waltzes and polkas, went on to lead his own groups, including the long-running Adolph Hofner and the Pearl Wranglers, until he was sidelined by a stroke in 1993. The Hofner bands featured a wide repertoire and top-flight musicians, including his brother Emil "Bash" Hofner, a trailblazing steel guitar player.

In the early '40s, Hofner recorded the hits "Maria Elena" and "CottonEyed Joe." "Several people called him the hillbilly Bing Crosby. He was

He incorporated western swing, hillbilly country, pop and the Bohemian songs," said country music legend Johnny Bush, one of the many musicians influenced by Hofner's music. Hofner is survived by his wife, Susan; and his daughters, Kathy Hofner Fielding and Oma Darlene Hofner Biggs; and son, Robert Price, all of San Antonio.

Fourth Annual

Czech Heritage Society of Texas genealogy conference July 27 - 29 A three-day genealogy conference, hosted by the Brazos Valley Counties Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society will celebrate 150 years of Czechs in Texas.

Yestfest to host :twelfth annual tarok tournament The directors of Westfest will again host a tarok tournament in conjunction with the Annual Westfest celebration.

The tournament will be held at West Community Center in West, Texas on Saturday, September 2, 2000. The tournament is open to all interested tarok players, ladies and gentlemen, 18 years of age or older.

Entry fee will be $17.50 per person with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and play starting at 9 a.m. Play should conclude about 4:30 p.m. Kolaches and coffee will be served during registration. Lunch is included in the registration fee and will be served at the community center. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top four players. Play will continue for all players throughout the tournament.

The top four players after six rounds will be awarded first, second, third and fourth place honors.

All persons wishing to enter should pre-register by submitting their name and address to Westfest Tarok Tournament, P.O. Box 70, West, Texas, 76691 before August 28, 2000 so that adequate arrangements can be made for food and seating. Late entries will be accepted if player slots are available.
