Publication Summary Publishing the Vestnik and providing communications and marketing support to management and local lodges were the major functions of the Editor's office in 1999. In accordance with the By-Laws, fifty issues of the Vestnik were published weekly in 1999. Issues ranged in length from 16 to 28 pages. This marked our seventh consecutive year of publishing the Vestnik with no missed deadlines with our publisher, Hill County Press, located in Hillsboro.

As in previous years, the emphasis in the Vestnik during 1999 was to promote the positive aspects of life insurance and membership in the SPJST, In its high moments, I hope that the Vestnik was able to do some good for you and your lodge, shed some light, rekindle some hope or stir some member from apathy and indifference to attentive action. Please know that your kind words, calls and notes always helped to brighten our days.

2. Financial Summary A review of Vestnik expenses provides a more complete look at Vestnik operations in 1999. The Vestnik incurred printing expenses of $58,775.53 in 1999, which represented a decrease of $1,843.79, or 3 percent from 1998. The decrease can be attributed, in part, to the decline in subscriptions in November following the mailing of the Vestnik subscription card.

Postage expenses for mailing in 1999 were $90,015.50, consistent with the $90,000.00 booked in 1998 for postage.

The combined cost of printing and mailing in 1999 was $148,791.03, which represented -a decrease of 1.2 percent from the previous year. Total Vestnik printing and mailing expenses represented 1.3 percent of Total Society Disbursements recorded in 1999. In spite of marked increases operating expenses and postage in recent years, overall Vestnik and other communication expenditures have been controlled, largely as a result of the in-house typesetting and layout procedures implemented in 1992.

Thanks to the office of the Financial Secretary, which was responsible for mailing the Vestnik and bookkeeping related to the production of our weekly newspaper.

Again, in 1999, we were never at a loss for stories and photos. Thanks to the topflight commitment of our local lodge correspondents and Home Office contributors in 1999. Likewise, thanks to Communications Assistant Katherine Smith for the professionalism and assistance she provided in 1999. Last, but not least, thanks to the Publication Committee, and the directors and officers who offered their solid support and encouragement.

3. Special Projects A. 2000 Calendar For the second consecutive year, the Supreme Lodge opted to have the SPJST Calendar produced by the Editor's office. The calendars were mailed to members during the final week of November 1999. As a result of in-house composition and typesetting, production costs remained well below pre-1999 costs. See chart on page three.

B. Ad Valorem Tax-Relief Initiative Through 1999, the Editor's office continued to encompass additional and significant responsibilities. One of the far-reaching initiatives pursued in 1999 was the 1999 ad valorem tax relief initiative. In an effort to address the heavy burden of property taxes on our local lodges, it was recommended by the Editor's office in 1998 that the SPJST take such steps as necessary to establish a unified, intra-fraternal approach to ad valorem tax relief issues, including but not limited to, repeal of ad valorem taxation, via Texas Constitutional amendment. At their January meeting, the Supreme Lodge voted to seek legislative action so as to coincide with the November 1999 statewide election.

Directly and indirectly, as a result of actions taken by the SPJST, legislation was introduced by District Five State Senator Steve Ogden of College Station to the 76th Texas Legislature seeking a constitutional amendment authorizing property tax exemptions for fraternal lodge properties. In spite of the efforts made, the 1999 intrafraternal effort fell short of its mark.

On Saturday, October 23, I had the honor to deliver a presentation before the 99th session of the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) in Houston, Texas. Senator Steve Ogden of College Station accompanied me on the program. A fellow fraternalist and a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, Senator Ogden expressed a keen understanding and appreciation for the good work that fraternals do in Texas. As you may recall, it was Senator Ogden who worked closely with several of our Texas fraternals on the ad valorem exemption legislation this past legislative session.

During that session, TFC delegates accepted and passed the recommendation contained in my report to organize a statewide action team committed to exploring and reporting on the many challenges and opportunities that lay ahead for Texas fraternals.

That the TFC passed this recommendation on October 23, National Make a Difference Day, seems very fitting.

I believed then — as I do now — that if the statewide action team is successful here in Texas, we could set a new standard for fraternal development that will be replicated in state after state. Texas has the opportunity to lead the way.

Update: The TFC directors voted at their February 2000 meeting to table all activity with regards to organizing the statewide action team.

C. Corporate Identity Project In response to the recommendation issued by the April 10 Publication Committee Meeting and the directive issued by the April Supreme Lodge meeting, the Editor's office began the process of assessing the SPJST's image as defined by our current publications, including weekly newspaper, advertisements, promotional materials and correspondence.

By design, the SPJST Graphic Standards project will be an important link in reestablishing our Society's identity as a unique, unified and professional fraternal benefit society. The SPJST Graphic Standards manual will provide direction on and example of how to use the logo to create a positive image as well as a consistent look and message in our communication materials.

Update: At the January 2000 meeting, the Editor's office presented the Supreme Lodge with a proposed new logotype and various applications for use.

4. 1999 Promotional Activities In addition to the previously outlined projects, the Editor's office maintained an active schedule of working with local lodges, districts and management, providing assistance on a range of printed and promotional efforts. A total of 50 communication activities, including the development of the new SPJST Internet web site, were assisted by the Editor's office in 1999. Thanks to all of our lodge members and Home Office personnel who contributed to these initiatives.

Even with the efforts that are being made in this area, there's so much that remains to be done to enhance our ability to communicate news, information and meet the needs of our members.

Supreme Lodge officers opt not to publish annual report The officers considered publishing an annual report separate for 1999 but decided not to since the information in the pre-convention report is required to be published 30 days prior to the Convention.

We felt some duplication would take place since the annual report is for one year and the pre-convention report is for the previous four years as well as for the future.

4. The Publication Committee supports the recommendation of the Supreme Lodge to establish a 501(c)(3) as a non-profit tax-deductible organization for the SPJST library and archives fund.

5. Recommendation: Explanation: Since the 26th SPJST Convention in 1992, the role of the Editor has evolved to encompass additional and significant responsibilities, including the development and publication of promotional literature for the SPJST on a statewide and local lodge level and the development of various projects and media relations, particularly on a statewide level. All of these things being in addition to the honored role as Editor of the Vestnik.

Therefore, let the recommendation read that: "Effective immediately, the position of Editor and Director of Communication", in all references.

6. Page 20 Article 28 Add Editor Members of the Supreme Lodge and Editor assume duties of their respective officers on January 1 following their election; however, any newly elected officer or editor elected by the Convention in a contested election involving the incumbent will assume duties July 1 of the year of the election.

Article 45: (j) Change $1,500 to $2,000 per year, $500 per meeting to $600 (j) Each district will receive an allocation of $2000 per year from the Supreme Lodge to be placed in the district's General Expense Fund. This sum is to be used by the district to pay the lodge hosting the District Meeting $600 per meeting with the balance being used to defray the expenses of the district. (Effective 1-1-2001)

The fall meeting was called to order at 11:15 a.m. by Brother John Engelke, District President. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by youth members Dakota Yates of Lod ge 66, Waco. The youth pledge was read by youth members James Linderman of Lodge 92, Fort Worth.

Welcome was given by Brother John Hilcher, President of Lodge 180.

Burleson, followed by the response by Brother B.J. Hlavaty, District First Vice President.

The youth members were dismissed at this time.

Brother Engelke asked for the reading of the minutes of the spring meeting. Sister Hykel asked for dispensing of the reading of the minutes and we would go page by page for corrections as follows: Page 2, first paragraph should read Brother Jim Greer, Lodge 92, Fort Worth, third paragraph, third line should be rest homes at the spring meeting before the convention in 2000.

Page 3, first paragraph - fifth line should read Lodge 66, Waco; .Angela Popko of Lodge 135, Ennis and Heather Valcik of Lodge 84, Dallas were awarded scholarships. After corrections, Brother Ben Jarma of Lodge 84, Dallas moved that we accept the minutes, seconded by Brother John Krizan of Lodge 6, Cottonwood and passed by a show of hands present.

President Engelke called on Sister Martha Hubenak Durham, District Treasurer. Sister. Durham gave the Treasurer's report of the general fund and the youth fund. Brother John Hilcher of Lodge 180, Burleson moved that we accept the treasurer's report, seconded by Sister Anna Johnson of Lodge 154, Fort Worth and passed by a show of hands from the membership present.

Brother George Pauling gave the Rest Home report. On the Taylor Rest Home they are going to remodel the kitchen. At the Needville Rest Home, they have a low occupancy. Medicare is trying to find a different way of paying the rest home. They are having to update their computers. The remodeling they are doing is paid for and the rest homes are in the black.

Brother Pauling gave the Fraternal Activities Coordinator report. The 100 Pennies Drive started in September and ends in March. There are a lots of scholarships given from this. The Incentive Award ends in December and be sure the FAC from your lodge turns in their report. The Fraternalist of the Year has to be turned in and there was only five turned in from our district. Most of the districts have turned their district meeting into a fun day in the fall they may have a small business meeting. They would have games. The membership rally (workshop) can be held at your lodge. The FAC, insurance and youth coordinators will be glad to help you set up this on the day you choose.

The judges selected for the baked goods contest. They are Sister Georgie Soukup of Lodge 6, Sister Bonnie

Pruitt of Lodge 66 and Sister Helen Kubala of Lodge 92. They are to meet right after lunch for instructions.

Brother Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary of the Supreme Lodge reported that he was happy to attend the last district meeting of the century of District Three. The convention is coming up in 2000, June 12, 13, 14, and some activities are planned for Sunday. On October 1 letters were sent out to your lodge for the amount of delegates your lodge will be entitles to. Be sure you check the qualifications. There will be 317 delegates over the state. SPJST was founded in 1897 with selling life insurance. Financially, SPJST is doing very good. Certificates are declining, but the dollar amounts are increasing. The sales representatives are working on that. Death claims are increasing and insurance certificate amounts are increasing.

Audits are scheduled in November, after this, the department of insurance will come in and do their audit. They had someone to come in and check to make sure their computers were Y2K compatible. They are doing mortgage loans. The insurance organization does a rating A to D and SPJST was rated as an B++. The rest homes was going to have a 401K plan. The refund rebate will be sent to the local lodges.

Brother Engelke reported that 111 members attending the meeting.

Brother Engelke called on District Director Johnnie Krizan for his report.

Sister Kay Kovar and Brother Jerry Kucera had other commitments. Texas Fraternal Congress had some of our youth attending. They are doing a very good job. At State Youth Achievement Day the state king and queen were both from District Three. Editor Brian Vanicek was doing a presentation at the Texas Fraternal Congress. The checks for the incentive award will be sent out to the lodges and not having to wait until the end of February. Vestnik cards need to be sent back to the Editor

by November 1. Books are going to closed December 30. Lodge 206, Mexia was chartered October 26 Brother Krizan. Brother Krizan thanked the delegates for voting on the change of retirement at the Supreme Lodge. If you know of any seniors that would be interested in a scholarship, they need to send for the papers to apply for a scholarship. Bronze cemetery markers are available for $30.40. They can be screwed or glued on the monument. They are three inches. The calendars are going out in November this year. The convention is just around the corner. We need to really think who you want to go to the convention to represent your lodge.

Brother Engelke dismissed for lunch at 12:20 p.m. A member of the Youth Club led us in prayer for lunch.

Brother Engelke called the meeting, back to order. Brother Engelke called on Youth Leader Bessie Petr for the youth program. Sister Bessie Petr thanked the cooks for the wonderful (Continued on page 6.)

meal. Sister Bessie Petr reported that the youth usually has a memorial service at the spring meeting but they wanted to give tribute to our late District Director Brother Sid Pokladnik. The SPJST was his life, he always attended everything the youth did. Jarod Olds of Lodge 84, recited a poem. Sister Gladys Yates and Sister Lynda Novak had the youth lined up for the memorial. The youth presented flowers for the deceased.

Brother Engelke called on Sister Hykel for the roll call of lodges.

Lodges present and the number of members present were Lodge 6 - 18; Lodge 66 - 19; Lodge 84 - 7; Lodge 92 - 38; Lodge 154 - 3; and Lodge 180 15. Six lodges were present with a total of 90 present for our meeting.

Sister Mary Steinman recognized our guests which included Brother Jerry Mikalus and Clem and Jane Sulak.

The By-Law Committee will have a meeting in January and they need any changes to be turned in by April 13.

Brother Michael Galler of the Finance Committee gave his report.

Brother Galler thanked Sister Durham for taking over for him at the district meeting. He thanked everyone for voting for the retirement plan for the Supreme Lodge. There were 94 Percent-For and 7 Percent-Against.

Brother Ben Jarma of the Insurance Committee gave his report. Brother Jarma reported that he will not be a candidate for the Insurance . Committee at the convention. We need to start thinking of someone for the Insurance Committee. The Insurance Meeting will be November 20. Brother Jarma recognized the sales representatives from District Three. Brother Jarma recognized Sister Bessie Petr for having four circles of dancers at heritage day the State Fair.

Sister Bessie Petr reported that the Publication Committee has not met since the last meeting. Brother Brian Vanicek sent word by way of District Three Director Johnnie Krizan to Sister Petr from the Texas Fraternal Congress that he was happy to represent the SPJST at the Fraternal Congress.

Sister Petr gave the youth report.

December 4 they will have holiday in the park at Six Flags. YAD cards and camp forms have to be turned in by May 30. YAD will be June 25 at Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Siter Petr said she had something to be very proud of having the State King Paxton Davies and State Queen Colette Kenney both from District Three. Each receives a $75 check from District Three. Brother Krizan remarked that he didn't know all of the traditions of the district director's, but he was told that when the state king and queen came from the same district that director had to buy all the other director's a dinner. He said they cost him a bundle but he said he would glad to do it again and again when this happens. He congratulated them. Sister Petr said we paid tribute to Brother Pokladnik but now I want to commend Brother Krizan for the director. Brother Krizan comes to all of the youth functions. He is one of

the best and she is very proud of him.

Sister Petr thanked Lodge 180, Burleson fro making a donation to Lodge 84 in memory of Brother Sid Pokladnik. There will be a lock-in April 14 at Lodge 84. There will be a youth leaders meeting at Lodge 84 on March 26. LIT class will be June 2,3, 4 at Peaceable Kingdom.

The District Three Spring Meeting will be April 23 but has to be changed to April 30. Sister Pam Durham moved that we change this seconded

by Sister Dana McAdams and passed by a show of hands present.

Brother Engelke asked the membership for their interests in having a fun day for our district meeting. Some said we still need to have some kind of meeting for our reports. The host lodge would have a lot of planning for different kinds of entertainment. They hope this kind of entertainment will bring out more of our members. We need to try and do something to try and get our younger members interested.

Because our older members are fading away, we need to keep the interests in the SPJST going. We want to try and get more people coming to our district meeting. One of the southern districts have a big fun day. They go to a park or some place for the people to go swimming, play games, etc. After some discussion, Sister Pam Durham moved that we go back to your lodges and see on their input on this, seconded

by Sister Jo Prochaska and passed by a show of hands present.

Brother Engelke reported that the convention committees will be having for the delegates to discuss the changes what will be coming into the convention. This is to see our ideas on these changes. We will have these two or three times before the convention. We need to have one before the April 13 deadline. Sister Bessie Petr moved that we have a Bylaw Meeting seconded by Brother George Pauling and passed by a show of hands from the membership present.

They reminded everyone to go vote on November 2.

Scholarship donation fund sheets are available. Donations were received from the Supreme Lodge, Joe and Estelle Hurtik donated soda water from Lodge 180, the centerpieces on the tables will also be given away.

Sister Gladys Yates moved that we donate $100 from the district and the Youth Club to Lodge 84 in memory of Brother Sid Pokladnik Sister Bessie Petr thanked the judges for the ornament contest. Reader invites delegates to see what a 501 (c) (3) organization can do Dear Editor, I have been reading about the 501(c)(3) that SPJST is talking about.

I would like to tell you about the Hamilton County Genealogy Society.

In 1994, about 20 people got together and formed a genealogy society in Hamilton. We operated out of the Hamilton Library and applied for 501(c)(3) status. We started receiving genealogy books and ran out of space in the public library. The public library refused to give the genealogy society any more space.

The officers then started looking for a building to use for a library. They found an abandoned tractor sales and service building and voted to buy it.

After the deed was signed, the owner gave the society the whole city block around the building. On this block there also stood another building and the last cotton gin in Hamilton County.

The building was full of junk and some valuable items and an auction was held and sold the items. With that money and donations and grants that came in, a new roof was put on the building with the help of labor by people that needed to do community service hours.

With the help of a couple of other fellows, five ladies and I started to renovate the interior of the building. One man donated his labor and provided a completely new electric system for the building.

We then started on the walls of the first room of the building. A room 40 feet by 30 feet had a drop ceiling put in. Next, three women and I built book shelves and put the books on the shelves and opened for business.

We then started on the remainder of the building. First, two rest rooms were built with the help of a local plumber who donated his time and labor to do the plumbing. Next, with the help of two more men who donated their time, we completed a 40 foot by 60 foot room and an office for the copy machine and a place to publish new books for sale in the library. After that was competed another 40 foot by 40 foot room was completed that will be used for meetings and rentals for family reunions.

We now have an RV park with 14 hook-ups for people who come from out of town in their RV's and want to do research at the library.

I would like to invite any delegates who would like to see for themselves what a 501(c)(3) organization can do with the help of a few grants and donated labor.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on says hurry and April meeting send in your blocks Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Irene Schiemenz, is currently looking for quilt blocks from our members. Deadline is June 4, but she sure would like to see them coming in so she can get busy piecing them together for our fundraiser.

She hopes to do two quilts, with each quilt having 30 squares, for a total of 60 squares needed. You can do them to suit your needs, such as a favorite event with SPJST activities, or your favorite colors, or your family names embroidered on a square, or painting or sewing, but please do a square and put your name or initials on it.

The quilt squares should be exactly 12-1/2 by 12-1/2 squares, which would not take you long to complete a square or two. If you want further information about it, please contact Sister Irene Schiemenz at 254-8292255, or just mail them to: 523 Waggoner Rd. Waco, Texas 76705 Thank you very much for getting these quilt squares to her as she is being kind enough to piece them into a quilt for the Cottonwood Lodge 6 fund raiser. Hi! Our meeting was called to order

by President, Brother Al Soukup. Roll call of officers was held with everyone present. It was reported that there were 46 people present at our meeting, but since it was our Easter meeting, the hall kept filling up very nicely for the afternoon.

The Pledge of Allegiance and motto were recited and a moment of silence was had for our departed members, Brother Don Watts and Sister Mary Krizan. Our condolences to the families of these individuals.

Our meeting continued with a bit of excitement at the beginning. Brother Johnnie Krizan, our member and District Three Director had an award to give. One of our own, Raymond Hromadka, III, won in the SPJST deer antler contest. His deer head, mounted by his father, Raymond Hromadka, Jr., was hanging on display and it was a beautiful site. His deer won the widest spread category with a total spread of 23 6/8 inches. Brother Johnnie presented him with a check of monetary value, an SPJST camouflage cap and a Zippo Pocket Knife. Raymond mentioned that he had gone on a one day hunt to San Angelo, Texas. Congratulations to Raymond Joe Hromadka, III, and also to Omer Everett of College Station, Texas for winning the Most Points category with a 16 point buck.

ticulars for the upcoming District Three Spring Meeting which will be held on April 30 at Lodge 66, Linden Hall, Elm Mott, Texas. A meal of fried chicken will be served around 12:30 p.m. for a donation of two canned goods per person. All others will be $5 for adults and $3.50 for children. There will be activities planned for the day, such as horseshoes contest for the adults and washer contest for the youth.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Treasurer, gave her report which was approved as given. Sister Peggy also have her youth report. She mentioned the lock-in at Lodge 84, Dallas with a DJ and games and fellowship then afterwards, going to Six Flags Saturday morning. Sister Peggy also mentioned that the Cottonwood Lodge 6 youth will present the memorial service at District Three meeting on April 30, inviting as many as possible to please attend this district meeting at Lodge 66, Elm Mott, Texas.

She also mentioned the upcoming Youth Achievement Day to be held at Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas.

Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, gave his report the bookings for the months of April and May. He reported that there would be no social on Good Friday, April 21. He also mentioned socials for May being on May 5 and May 19.

The Sunshine Report was given by Sister Hattie Kaska. She reported sending sympathy cards to Mrs. Genie Watts and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Watts upon the death of a husband and father, Brother Don Watts.

Our Fraternal Activties Coordinator Sister Irene Schiemenz, welcomed all to our meeting and Easter party. She also thanked all the ladies and guys that did the food for the day. Sister Irene also mentioned that she would not be able to attend the upcoming social on April 7 and asked that Brother George and Sister Lucille Sulak prepare the meal. She also reported that there would be no social for Good Friday, April 21, but there will be a Trustee Meeting on Friday, April 28 with a meal served at 6:30 p.m. Sister Schiemenz mentioned the need for members to get their quilt blocks in by June 4. She sure would like to start putting the blocks together into a quilt. She also wishes to do two quilts which will be a total of 60 blocks needed. Another good point that Sister Irene mentioned was getting your addresses corrected with the Home Office as well as name corrections due to marriage, etc. It sure would help in the mailings that have to go out with your local lodge. Just call the 800 number for the Home Office in Temple and make any necessary corrections that you feel may need changing.

Under some old business, Brother Al Soukup and Brother Johnnie Krizan, presented 50-year pins to those present.

They were Brothers Robert Dobecka and Lawrence Ondrej and Sister Lavern Mikeska. There were three not present, Nancy Neill, Nancy Kazda and Alfonse Polansky. Congratulations to all six 50year members of SPJST. Still more pins to be given out. The "Everyday Hero" pins were also distributed by our President Brother Al Soukup. They were given to members that work hard all year long for Cottonwood SPJST Lodge 6—too numerous to mention. Congratulations to all of you!

Those present with birthdays for the month of April were Sisters Jerelene Lenart and Marie Horak and Brothers George Straten and Bobbie Dobecka.

Happy Birthday to these and to all with a birthday this month.

Door prizes were drawn with the $5 door prize won by Sister Ruth Krizan.

Progressive door prizes were won by Marvin Mynar, Jr. and Bruce Gerikneither were present.

The meeting was adjourned for fellowship and a good meal of fried chicken and all the trimmings. The next meeting will be Sunday, May 7 at 3:30 p.m.

Lodge 25, Ennis member completes U.S. Marine Corps training Brian Holland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Holland, Jr. of Ennis left for the United States Marine Corps boot camp on October 6, 1999. Pvt. Holland successfully. completed 12 weeks of basic training in San Diego, California on December 29. Training included rifle basic marksmanship, first aid, drill and ceremonies, physical conditioning, Marine customs and courtesies, individual tactics, techBrian Holland niques and discipline.

After a 12-day leave, he returned to the mountains at Camp Pendleton, California for 17 days of rigorous MCT (Marine Combat Training.) He completed this training on February 11, 2000 and was then sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for additional education and training. Pvt. Holland will return home on March 31 and will be stationed as a reservist for six years at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth.

Those in attendance at Pvt. Holland's USMC graduation ceremony in December were his parents, Scooter and Rita, sister, April, brother, Jake and USMC Corporal Randy Barak.

Brian is a lifelong member of SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis. A former District Three King and an active member of the Youth Club, Brian takes pride in his membership and having attended camp at Camp Val Verde every year since the age of six through last year as a counselor.

Brian's grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie I. Krajca; and his great-grandmother is Annie Martinek, all of Lodge 25. His other grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Holland and great-grandmother, Judy Holland of Ennis.

Lodge 26, Skidmore reports on quarterly meeting The Skidmore Lodge 26, SPJST held their quarterly meeting at the home of Mary and Denk Denkeler in Beeville on Sunday, March 5, 2000 at 2 p.m.

President Linda Henkhaus called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. Mary Denkeler led the members present in the Pledge of Allegiance. Annie Mae Cox Secretary read the minutes of the December meeting and they were approved as read.

Mary Denkeler gave the checking account and savings account reports.

She also reported she had deposited the refund check received from the SPJST Home Office in Temple.

There was no old business.

New Business Lodge 26 will have a delegate to attend the SPJST convention in Temple in June 12 - 14. Mary Denkeler will go as the delegate and will be having her husband, Denk, going with her. There were nine members present for the meeting and two visitors.

The next meeting will be in June; time and place will come later.

After the meeting adjourned, Mary Denkeler served a svacina and Mary Hanus of Skidmore furnished the kolaches.

32, Victoria schedules 100th anniversary banquet for April 16 Lodge

We will have our 100 year anniversary banquet for our lodge members on April 16, 2000 at Leo's Feed Steakhouse. Invitations will be sent out to our members, so they will be able to return their reservation card in time.

84, Dallas reports on recent member, lodge activities Lodge

A moment of silence was observed for a departed member, Libby Janousek. Sister Janousek was a professional drapery maker. Many, many years ago, she and Sister Bessie Petr picked the gold material for our stage curtains. Today, the drapes still hang

on our stage. What workmanship!

The meeting continued with Sister Cheri Petr reading the minutes of January and February meetings and also correspondence. She also read the Sunshine report, which was sent in by Sister Lillie Jarma and Vicki Kohn.

Get well wishes are extended to Brothers Leonard Baleja and Bennie Jarma; and Sisters Annie Steglik, Gerry Jezek, Mary Schroeder, Julie Adamcik and Pat Patak. Sympathy cards were sent to Anne Jakubik on loss of husband, Henry; to the Petr family on loss of Sister Emma Toupal; to the Janousek family on loss of mother, Libby; and to the family of Kathleen Slovak. Our sympathies are extended and may your loved ones rest in peace.

House Committee Report House Committee Chairman reported on the water tower and compressor on the coolers in the bar box. As usual, his help included Brother Emil Petr, Brother John Jones and this time even John's wife, Linda, helped with a clean-up job that needed to be taken care of before and after the dance.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported on the Youth Leaders Workshop. She also asked for the use of the lodge on Friday, April 14 for a District Three Lock-In—it was approved by all present.

Sister Carlyn Ondrusek reported a good turn out in Ennis at the DallasEnnis Fraternal Council. The next

meeting is Monday, April 10 at the Czech Club hosted by KJT and KJZT. Sister Wanda Petr reported a lot of fun for.the bus load that left at 7 a.m. for the casinos in Louisiana. Although she was nursing an injured ankle, she went, too. This is one brave member who also is our flag bearer.

The Don Peachey Orchestra of Burnet, Wisconsin made an appearance at Lodge 92, Fort Worth on March 19. The highlight of the dance, according to Lodge 92 Reporter Al Kercho, was the appearance of the Texas Chicken, also known as Paxton Davies, accompanied by Ann Sustala. "It was the largest circle and most enthusiastic rendition of the chicken dance ever," writes Brother Kercho.

87, Temple reports on March meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 87, Temple met March 14, 2000. After the Sloppy Joe supper provided by Brother and Sister Reisner in honor of their 35th wedding anniver.sary, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence for our departed members, especially Helena M. Mesecke.

The financial report was read and approved.

We were thrilled to have former lodge President Brother Don Alford in attendance on Spring Break from his new position in Denton. Sister Norma Alford, our current President, is to be commended for her willingness to share his company during such a visit!

Treasurer Daryl Entrop brought our new microwave to the meeting and we were excited to finalize plans for the microwave cooking demonstration scheduled for our April meeting. We also addressed the necessity for adding the new equipment to our insurance.

Brother Sid Kacir also brought in an estimate for Paul's Siding to repair and reside the lodge. The expense was approved in order to maintain the lodge. In addition to rendering it more attractive for our members and renters, the new siding will include significant insulation and weather protection to reduce the cost of future upkeep.

In a disordered schedule due to the delay in our Secretary's arrival, the minutes were then read and approved. We reviewed our correspondence and were informed of a name change for our member Pamela J. Worshek whose last name is now Engbrock. We also read aloud our list of 15 50-year pin members and the name of 75-year member Sister Julie Chlapek. Our half century honorees include Past President Wallace James Bartek, Past Financial Secretary Johnnie Ann Labaj and Brother Lewis Charlie Jez, Jr., whose father helped to build our lodge building. It was moved, seconded and approved that we should send letters to all the honorees. We will invite them to attend a ceremony at our October meeting and then mail out any unclaimed pins.

Award-winning Sales Representative John Troy and Sister Diane Troy reported on the Incentive Banquet and Workshop held in Ennis on February 26. We also presented the Gold Award plaque we received and everyone gave a long, loud round of applause both to our hard working sales reps and to the active members who have contributed so much to revitalizing our lodge.

Cooking Demonstration Scheduled Our April 11 meeting will revolve around the microwave cooking demonstration, which will be confirmed by FAC Thelma Groppell.

Afterwards, our delegates to the 2000 convention will meet to discuss the various by-law proposals. Norma Alford is our First Delegate, -serving

with Bertha Capps, Mary Ann Zatopek Thelma Groppell and Lad Zatopek. Daryl Entrop and Sid Kacir are our alternates.

Texas Czech winemaking and special performances by Cesky Folklorni Soubor z Texas. There was also a prize drawing in which two Southwest Airlines tickets were awarded as first prize. Second prize was a hand-crocheted quilt. The silent auction inlcuded more than 80 articles and vendors of Czech imported crystal, glass, books and collectibles. This was sponsored by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Harris County Chapter, Inc., Dan Hrna President. A fine time was had by all who attended.

Our trip to Coushatta to gamble in March was not a profitable one — that is I didn't hear of anyone winning much money. I know that I didn't.

We had doughnuts furnished by President Clooney, which we had while waiting for the bus. While travelling, we had ham and cheese sandwiches, furnished by Mary and Herman Doege and soft drinks furnished by Laura Bell and Royal Warnasch. These offerings of refreshments are greatly appreciated. We celebrated three birthdays on the bus.

They were Dell Carlson, Bessie Dewer and Weldon Schielack. We had a fine time, however, winning money or not.

88, Houston Czech Springfest draws good crowd Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, There was a good turnout for the Czech Springfest which was held on Sunday, March 26 at Lodge 88.

Music was by Kovanda's Czech Band and Bobby Jones Band. A traditional Czech dinner was served for lunch and sausage and sauerkraut was served in the afternoon. Adding to the festive atmosphere, there were numerous booths, including the Tolman egg and Czech collection, violin making,

Who Is It? She was born on December 27, 1937 in Flatonia, Texas and attended Assumption Catholic Church. She was married on May 5, 1963 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Flatonia, Texas and has five children, who were all members of the Youth Club at Lodge 88 in the 70s. She attended Waelder High School and graduated in 1956. She has dedicated her life to being a housewife, which is a good profession. She did charity work such as walks for the March of Dimes for about 14 years. She also worked as a cashier at Greenspoint Mall and babysat her grandchildren — which she is still doing. She served on the lodge entertainment committee for four years and helped in the kitchen.

Wednesday, April 12, 2000---VESTNIX711 For three years she was on the telephone committee while serving on the Entertainment Committee, collected newspapers for the Men's Club and has supported the Bingo Committee by playing bingo on Thursday nights.

She also served on the Auditing Committee. She helped on clean-up days at the lodge during the 70s and has supported the Youth Club by making cakes for auctions. She is a delegate to the SPJST convention in June.

Czech Cultural Center Houston anniversary dinner, meeting highlights The Czech Cultural Center Houston located in The Market Place, Northwest Mall celebrated its Fourth Anniversary, the First Recipient of the Distinguished Czech Citizen Award, Annual Members Meeting, Mary Karele Milligan Scholarship Awards and Thelma Burnett Maresh Day on Saturday evening March 18, 2000 at St. Mark's Episcopal Parish Hail, 3816 Bellaire Boulevard, Houston, Texas.

The event was the celebration of the Fourth Anniversary since incorporation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational cultural institution in the State of Texas in 1996 that marked a milestone for The CCCH fourth year of daily operation, growth and development with a future site in the museum district of Houston. This event was a tribute to major benefactor Thelma Burnett Maresh who is Czech by marriage, receiving the first Distinguished Czech Citizen Award. Her husband, the late Dr. Henry R. Maresh was pioneer in documenting Texas/Czech immigration and heritage in his book The Czech Pioneers of the Southwest published in 1934. Mrs. Maresh has carried on the dreams of her late husband through the CCCH to promote Czech heritage and teach children the culture, language, arts and scholarship of the people of Moravia, Bohemia, Slovakia and Silesia. A proclamation from Mayor Lee P. Brown, City of Houston recognizing her hard work and dedication to and for the Czech/Slovak people was read by Chairman of the Board Effie M. Rosene proclaiming March 18, 2000 Thelma Burnett Maresh Day. Accepting the award on behalf of Mrs. Maresh was longtime frien, Norma Lowder.

Mrs. Maresh established The Mary Karele Milligan Scholarship Fund in memory of her granddaughter. This program offers students with Czech/Slovak lineage an opportunity for scholarships. Glenn Sterns, Ph.D. announced the Scholarship Committees selection of Jacques Williams of Rockdale and Justin Paul Sabrusula of Simonton for $1,000 scholarships and $500 scholarships were awarded to Justin Dale Mlcak of Sealy, Anne Skrivanek of Caldwell and Jeremy M. Rathke of Taylor.

Effie M. Rosene spoke to the Quest for Capital Funding of a Czech legacy introducing Charles Saunders, Esq., Chairman of the Development Committee who described the recently purchased property in Houston's Museum District. Speakers and Capital Campaign Co-Chairman Dr. Arthur Jansa and Honorary Czech Consul Raymond J. Snokhous addressed the need for funding participation for the $4.5 Capital Campaign.

Robert J. Dvorak Steering Committee Director reviewed managing pledge payments overtime and Beatrice Mladenka Fowler Director addressed the engraved pavers that are availables for purchase.

Czech Heritage Society of Texas trustee Anna Krpec presented the CCCH with a $5,000 contribution for the Capital Campaign Building Fund.

The CCCH is most grateful for the contribution. The Center looks forward to the participation of fund raising efforts from many other Czech/Slovak organizations as well

privately planned fund raisers by its members and friends with the schedule to be announced in the near future.

Czech Cultural Center Houston awards Milligan scholarships The Czech Cultural Center Houston in 1997 established a scholarship program funded by the prominent Mrs. Thelma Burnett Maresh in memory of her granddaughter, Mary Karele Milligan and administered by Greater Houston Community Foundation.

The scholarships were awarded to the winners at the Fourth Anniversary Members Dinner Celebration on March 18, 2000 at St. Mark's Episcopal Parish Hall with 250 members and friends in attendance.

The CCCH Scholarship Board members Glenn Sternes, Ph.D., Yvonne Sternes, BS, Robert J. Dvorak, MA, Georg Broze, Ph.D. and V. Rev.Dr. Michael Prokurat reviewed 35 candidates from over 250 applicants for the 2000-20001 academic year.

Students selected were community leaders and participants with appropriate scholastic achievement and character, of Czech/Slovak lineage and destined to promote their Czech/Slovak heritage through the culture, language, scholarship and the arts of Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia and Silesia, as outstanding Americans and citizens of the world.

In Memoriam In Memory of Alvin George Palat A.G. "Slim" Palat, 88, resident of Freeport, Texas, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2000 at Brazosport Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Freeport with Reverend Mike

Pentecost officiating. The family received friends at the Freeport Funeral Home from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., Saturday, March 11, 2000. A Masonic graveside service followed the church service with the Velasco Masonic Lodge 757 officiating at Restwood Cemetery.

Mr. Palat retired as an electrician for the Dow Chemical Company after 28 years of service. Mr. Palat was a mem-

ber of the First Presbyterian Church of Freeport; the Velasco Masonic Lodge 757; the Royal Arch Mason-Freeport Chapter 487; the Royal and Select Master Freeport Council 402; the Litt S. Perry Commandery 111; and SPJST Lodge 81, Needville. Mr. Palat received the Golden Trowel for exceptional service in 1996.

He is survived by a brother, Edward Palat of Clute; two sisters, Mildred Seiler of Blanco, Texas and Edna "Pat" Tribble of Brazoria; nephews, Bill, Glenn, Jimmy and Richard Palat, Larry Seiler and Ronald Tribble. He is also survived by one niece, Gail Tribble

Resolution of Sympathy The officers and members of Lodge 133 wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of BRADLEY DIETRICH, who passed away at the age of 45 on July 6, 1999 after sustaining a head injury after a diving accident in Canyon Lake, Texas.

Bradley was born September 13, 1953 in San Antonio, Texas.

He is survived by his parents, Raymond and Ella Mae Dietrich, Sr.; brothers and sisters in-law Raymond and Judy Dietrich, Jr., Michael and Carey Dietrich, Darrell and Tina Dietrich, Troy Dietrich, Shane and Sharon Dietrich; several aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; and cousins. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia Dietrich Pawelek.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 10, 1999 at the funeral home with Reverend Raymond Schuster officiating. Interment followed at Mission Burial Park, South.

Stanley Tatarevich was born September 5, 1920 in Fort Worth. He graduated from North Side High, served with the 47th United States Navy Construction Battalion in World War II. After the war, he was employed by General Dynamics. He played softball before, during and after the war and was known as a "top hurler." He was a member of the Roosevelt George Sweaters. He was an active member of the St. Paul Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Survivors include his wife, Jennelle Tatarevich; son, Randy Tatarevich and wife, Becky; daughters, Elaine Elqutob and husband, George and Patty Seals; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and aunts, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, LOUISE ELIZABETH IVICIC, of Holland, who passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2000 in a Granger nursing home at the age of 85.

Sister Ivicic was born in Walberg to Joe and Agnes Kubacek Cmerek. She was a homemaker and lived her adult life in Holland. She was a member of St. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church of Granger. She was a member of KJZT Lodge and SPJST Lodge 80, Holland.

Sister Ivicic is survived by a son, Darwin "Monk" Ivicic of Holland; a daughter, Gladys Wood of Powder Springs, Georgia; a brother, Victor Cmerek of San Angelo; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Ligie Ivicic, preceded her in death.

Services were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28 at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett with the Reverend Joseph Nisari officiating. Burial was in Holland Cemetery.

Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas, on behalf of the entire membership, wish to express sincere sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed sister, FLORA LOCKE KOCI, age 89, a retired teacher, who died Monday, March 6, 2000 at a North Richland Hills Care Center.

Visitation was on Thursday, March 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. The funeral was on Friday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Olivet Chapel. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Flora Koci was born November 25, 1910 in Wynnewood, Alaska. She was a member of richland Hills Christian Church, a 50-year member of SPJST Lodge 92, a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 684, member of AARP, Pythian Sisters and Ladies of the Nile. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa. She received her bachelor's degree from Southeastern University in Durout, Oklahoma and her master's degree from TCU in Fort Worth.

Flora was one of the first two members to join the SPJST Lodge 92 Ladies Circle that were not of Czech heritage. She was also a reporter at one time for the Circle and was the first youth leader of Lodge 92.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Joe Koci; a son, William Robert Koci and a brother, Jo

Kupcak Family The Kupcak Family will have a reunion on Sunday, April 16, 2000 at St. John's Parish in St. John, Texas.

Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. in Parish Hall. The registration fee is $5 per family per $2.50 per single adult Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. at St John's Catholic Church.

Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.

A general meeting will follow lunch.

Prizes will be awarded after the meeting. This year's reunion will be hosted by the Joseph and Rosalie Stryk Family. Please bring a basket lunch (meat, vegetables,dessert). Dinnerware, tea, coffee, and other beverages will be provided.

Youth Department expenses decrease $17,000 in 1999 Dear Members, I present to you the 1999 expense, summary of the SPJST Youth Department. The information was compiled from the fraternal department register and then verified with the files maintained by the financial secretary's department.

The SPJST Youth Department expenses for 1999 were $173,079.92.

This amounts reflects the Youth Activities, District Youth Allocation, and District Youth Counselors' accounts.

The 1998 expenses were $190,396.59 which represent a 9 percent, or $17,316.67, decrease in expenses in 1999 and an 11.25 percent, or $22,239.17, decrease from 1997 when the Youth Department

expenses totaled $195,319.09.

Based on the overall expenses of the SPJST in 1999, the Youth Department expenses represent less than 1.5 percent of SPJST's total expenditures.

In 1999, youth club meeting attendance increased to 328 from 310 in 1998. The 328 is an average based on 1999 quarter reports submitted by youth leaders.
