Getting Proactive

I received a call and request last week from Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Six Director Matt Vanek that the Vestnik address the B++ rating recently assigned to the SPJST by the A.M. Best Company. A rating report from the Best Company represents an independent opinion from the leading provider of ratings of a company's financial strengths and ability to meet its obligations to certificate holders. Ratings range from A++ (Superior) to F (In Liquidation).

For the second year in a row, Best assigned the SPJST a rating of B++ (Very Good) to the SPJST. According to Best, the rating reflects "the order's strong capitalization, conservatively invested asset portfolio, consistently profitable operating results and its good fraternal niche position." Partially offsetting these strengths, the report cited "continued declines in policies in force and decline in membership . . . With the exception of 1995, certificates in force have declined or remained flat, along with a decline in members." Prior to 1998, the SPJST possessed A.M. Best's A - (Excellent) rating.

"We want to turn around this decline in membership," says Chairman Vanek, who addressed the subject at the recent Lodge Officers Workshop and challenged each district to enroll 300 new members in 2000.

A total of 1,397 member certificates were issued by the SPJST in 1999. In spite of these efforts, total certificates in force at year-end declined from 48,205 as of December 31, 1998 to 47,984 at December 31, 1999, reflecting a net decrease of 311 certificates.

The total dollar amount of insurance in force as of December 31, 1999 was higher - $433,010,557, compared to $406,911,394. 'This increase can be attributed to the larger dollar volume of new certificates being issued.

Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska commented on the issue. "The decline in membership is a very real and pressing concern for the SPJST. In response, the Insurance Department has initiated some very real and proactive measures over the last few years," he says.

"With our emphasis on the FIC training program, we're working to ensure that our volunteer sales force remains knowledgeable and able to sell and service an ever-expanding menu of life insurance options.

"I'm proud of the way our people have responded. That applies both to our personnel on staff and to our sales representatives. They've had a lot of new things thrown at them and have respond-

ed admirably. They continue to post good numbers in spite of the challenging `buyer's market' they are serving."

"In spite of our best efforts," Brother Mikeska acknowledges, "the Insurance Department can't be expected to turn around the negative trends on its own.

It's time - it's been time - to seriously address the value-added aspect of our program - our fraternal activities and do whatever we can in that area to make membership in the SPJST more valuable."

"We have some good programs that appeal to a minority of our members," he says. "Both the youth program and mortgage lending program are good benefits. Likewise, in some areas, the SPJST is fortunate in that we have been blessed to have some real 'selfstarting' individuals who have been proactive in establishing local fraternal programming.

Still, he points out that there are many areas where SPJST lodges have little or no sales activity or fraternal presence in the community.

Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar agrees. "After reviewing the results of the lodge incentive program for the last three years, we can say there are common things that lodges in the winning columns can point to.

"They have monthly meetings and they have youth clubs," he says, acknowledging that some lodges meeting on a quarterly basis are also doing well.

"What we know is that what works well in some lodges doesn't work in other areas," President Leshikar says.

"We have to look at programs in those areas that will appeal to the membership and improve the quality of life."

"We have a challenge ahead of us," stated Chairman Vanek. "We've got to get out there and get more involved in working with the lodges. We've seen positive results where we've been able to come in and work one-on-one. It also makes a big difference when lodge members helps the sales rep in bringing new members aboard.

"SPJST is a good organization and we've got good insurance. And the fraternal activities - that's an important part. That's what gets people involved and makes them proud to be members," Chairman Vanek concluded.

All recommendations for changing bylaws must be signed and in the hands of the By-Law Committee Secretary prior to April 13, 2000, in order to be considered. The secretary will forward all signed recommended changes to the by-laws to the Vestnik for publication.

District Six Spring Meeting set for March 26 at Lodge 30, Taiton Dear District Six Lodges: Our Spring District Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 26, at the Taiton Community Center. Monica Staff, President of Lodge 30, Taiton, extends a warm welcome for everyone to come on over and enjoy the day. Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on March meeting, recent lodge activities Hi! Our monthly meeting was called to order on March 5, 2000 by President, Brother Al Soukup. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all with Brother George Sulak reading our motto.

Roll call was had and all officers were present with the exception of our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Irene Schiemenz. Sister Georgie Soukup gave her report of 28 members present at our meeting, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Secretary, read the minutes from our last meeting which were approved as read with one correction. The names of two of our newest members, Eugene and Marie Horak, needed to be changed. She thanked Sister Peggy Dobecka for doing the minutes from our last meeting.

Our Treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka, gave her report and it was approved as given. Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, gave his report of lodge bookings for the month. He also reported that there were 13 adults and one juvenile as new members. Brother George also mentioned that a great job had been done by our sales representatives as there were a total of 20 adults and four juveniles since January of this year, only two months. He also mentioned that our next meeting on April 2 at 3 p.m. would be our Easter party, meeting and short annual meeting of Lodge 6, Inc. with election of its officers. It was also reported that the next trustees' meeting would be on April 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Sister Hattie Kaska was called upon for her report. She reported sending sympathy cards to Mrs. Andrew Beseda and family; Mr. and Mrs. Gary Beseda and family; Mrs. Jerelene Lenart; and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Krizan. She also sent congratulations to Robert and Lydia Dobecka on their 50th wedding anniversary.

Sister Peggy Dobecka, Yotith Leader, gave the Youth Club report. She mentioned that the Youth Club would have a little program and hunt at our Easter party on April 2. It was reported that on April 14, there would be a lock-in at Loge 84, Dallas. Sister Peggy also reported that the District Three Spring Meeting would be held at Lodge 66, Linden Hall on April 30 with District Youth Achievement Day held at Lodge 92, Fort Worth on June 25.

She also reported that there were 44 contestants at the Tarok Tournament that was held on February 19 at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. It was also reported that a good attendance of 14 people from Lodge 6, attended the workshop/banquet at Lodge 25, Ennis, Texas.

Brother Jerry Kucera, District Two and Three State Field Representative, recognized and congratulated Brother Robert Dobecka, a sales representative for Lodge 6, Cottonwood, for being one of District Three's top-producing sales representatives in December.

Brother Jerry also mentioned three things that were coming up: Easter party on April 2, spring meeting on April 30 and the convention in June.

Brother Johnnie Krizan, District Three Director, asked that all delegates to the convention please go to the next delegate meeting at Lodge 84, Dallas on Wednesday, March 29.

Those in attendance with a birthday in March was Brother Alvin Pavlas.

Happy birthday to Alvin and to all with a birthday this month.

Drawing for the $5 door prize was won by Sister Nelda Hlavaty.

Congratulations! The progressive door prize was won by Sharon Ann Vochaska and she was not present. Other various door prizes were exchanged among those present at our meeting.

Wednesday, March 22, 2000---VESTNIK/7 Our next meeting is scheduled for April 2 at 3 p.m. which is also our Easter party. There will be a short lodge meeting, the 50-year members will be presented with pins and a short Lodge 6, Inc. annual meeting will be held. Afterwards, it is party time along with a fried chicken meal to be served.

Ladies, please bring desserts.

The youth will present an Easter program and then everyone will enjoy an Easter egg hunt. There will be various hunts to include infants to elders, so there will be lots of fun for everyone.

Instead of bringing our normal gifts for exchange among members present, please omit for this meeting. If you like, you may bring an item for the Youth Club Easter prize drawing.

Eggs for the hunt will also be needed.

On March 4, the Straight Domino Tournament was held at Elk. It was an enjoyable day. President Linda Trojacek thanked everyone for helping at the officers workshop that was held here on February 26. The Youth Club and confirmation candidates of St. John did a great job serving at the banquet.

Cathy Krajca gave the treasurer's report and Kay Kovar gave the financial secretary report. Both were approved. Fraternal Activities Coordinator reported that Ronnie Honza and Jennifer Honza represented the lodge at the Straight Domino Tournament at Lodge 35, Elk. Also that on March 18, the State 42 Domino Tournament will be held at Lodge 25.

Correspondence was read by Patricia Fowler. Thanks to the Ennis Sewing Circle for the donation of $50 to the Youth Club.

47, Seaton sales, fraternal efforts earn Platinum Award Lodge

The weather has been beautiful and perfect for planting — but is winter over or not? We will see. The grasshoppers are already out and feasting on rosebushes. We had our monthly meeting a week later, on Sunday March 12. Jerome Orsag and Calvin Skrabanek brought in the flags and led the Pledge of alligiance.

The youth club met on Sunday, March 5. Visitors were Jerry Kucera and Helen McFarland.

Joyce Skrabanek, resolution committee, reported one sick member, Lillian Hoff who was a patient in Scott and White hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery.

New members are: Zachary Keith Slone and William Kyle Paysse. We welcome them and hope they can attend our meetings.

We made a $100 donation to Rogers senior class "Project Celebration" and a $50 donation to the Troy Fire Department.

Thank you notes for floral memorials were read from the Rosa Schneider family, Ed Skrabanek family, Mary Chlapek and Freida Delano.

The February board minutes were read by Edwin Vasicek, board secretary.

President Dolores Skrabanek thanked everyone that helped at the fund raiser and also did some repairs in and around the hall. She gave an extended report on the Ennis workshop. She also asked for a seasonal bid to cut the grass at the hall with bids to be in by March 20 board meeting.

Lodge Recognized Jerry Kucera, Districts Two and Three Sales Representative, spoke briefly. He congratulated the sales reps who enabled us to be the Platinum award winners of $2,000.

He gave each sales rep a prospect note pad and pen so they could more easily get names for new members, so get to work sales reps for the year 2000. Show us you can do it again.

Congratulations, again.

We were glad to have District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky back with us. He has been in the hospital and seems to be doing very well now.

There were 14 door prize winners.

Next month's meeting will be Sunday, April 2 with a covered dish meal. Fifty-year members will be honored. Also an Easter egg hunt for the youth will be held.

Audit Committee Reports The auditing committee checked the books, finding everything in order.

Our Treasurer Carlyn Ondrasek works hard to see that all stays in order and we thank her. Thank you also to the auditors, Brothers John Becan, Robert Pokladnik and Jerry Kohn.

The members also thanked Brother Joe Ondrusek for ordering the bar essentials to keep supply on hand for all dances and rentals. He has done this work for so many years and members should be thankful we have him keeping check on the orders. Let's not forget Brother John Jones and Linda who always are ready to serve you at the bar. John is now helping to check and keep things running at our lodge.

Brother Adolph Salac, the house chairman, and Brother Emil Petr need all the help they can get. For all their hard, we thank you so much.

A thank you for the memorial and svacina was received from the family of Brother . Otto Janousek. The Janouseks along with others, for many years supported the baseball team for Lodge 84. A thank you was also received from Cecilia Kretsinger's family; a nephew wrote that she loved coming and being part of the lodge.

Sunshine cards were sent. Get well wishes were extended to Brothers J.J. Novak, Stanley Vrla, Joe Tylaska, Bill Don Thornton, Sisters Meribeth Novak, Sally Nanak, Evelyn Salac, Annie Steglik, Wanda Petr and Anne Cowan.

Sympathy was extended to the Kartous family on the loss of sister, Marie Kowal and Eleanor Rusnak on the loss of husband and father.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported that the youth had just returned from the folks at St. Joseph's Nursing Home.

The residents enjoyed the beseda so much they were asked to dance twice!

The flowers and entertainment is looked forward to by many who have seen the Lodge 84 dancers many times before.

A letter was received from one of the former state queens, Sister Leslie Barnes. President Justine Yeager said she was alive and well, teaching English in Vietnam. She was visiting Singapore, China when she wrote to President Yeager. Maybe she was a little homesick.

SPJST Lodge 87, Temple met on February 8, 2000. We were extremely pleased to combine our Valentine pizza party with a hearty welcome back to Sister Mary Ann Zatopek and Brother Lad Zatopek. We were especially happy to witness Sister Zatopek's recovery from her surgery and celebrated her return with a cake decorated in her honor. We also each received special mementos made by Brother and Sister Reisner to decorate the hall for Valentine's Day. After heartfelt thank yous to everyone who helped set up the hall, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence for our departed members, especially Curtis Williams.

The February minutes were read and approved as was the financial report. We were pleased to include our Gold Incentive Award and our premium refund, for which our sales reps received prolonged applause.

Sister Vi Buckley and Brother Ed Reisner formed our Auditing Committee and extolled Treasurer Daryl Entrop's efforts and bookkeeping.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Thelma Groppell announced Brother Ed Reisner's birthday and he announced his and Sister Florence's 35th anniversary. We all joined in a rousing version of "Happy Birthday."

Our FAC also announced that we would be having a presentation in April about cooking in the microwave. This inspired us to move and approve the purchase of a new microwave to replace the one that had been stolen. •Brother Daryl Entrop volunteered to take charge of this duty.

We also were able to witness Sister Groppell's presentation of Everyday Hero awards to Brother and Sister Zatopek.

Old Business Dates to Remember

Brother Lad Zatopek volunteered to address the issue of cleaning out our drainage ditch which is in danger of being clogged.

Our first -item of old business was to install our brand new 20-gallon waste receptacles to replace our beat up old ones. We also received acknowledgment of our 100 Pennies donation and the canned goods given over the holidays. We continued to address the need to reside the lodge.

81, Needville reports on February meeting

that the roof over the barbecue pit needs painting. He received a bid to have it done.

After all business was attended to, Brother Louis Hanus came up and enlightened us on several things from the Home Office in Temple. Then, he graciously announced that he would be happy to pay for the new microphone and the barbecue roof paint job.

Thank you Brother Hanus! Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

After the meeting was almost over, President Vincent Newman decided to add a little humor to our meeting by playing a game sent to the FAC. The members seemed to enjoy it. The winner of this game ended up being Edwin Susan.

Then it was time for the door prizes. This month's winners were: Johnny Kujawa,Winnifred Susan, Robert Polasek, and Walter Anderson.

On Sunday, February 20, 2000, Lodge 81 of Needville met for their monthly meeting. We had a nice group of people at this meeting. An invitation is always extended-for anyone to come join us.

After a prayer of thanks, a delicious meal of potluck with a variety of side dishes and desserts was served. 1 would like to take this opportunity to thank all the cooks who brought the delicious food for everyone to enjoy.

Everything was absolutely mouthwatering!

At 1 p.m., President Vincent Newman opened the meeting. The pledge was led by Mary Werner. We had a moment of silence for departed member Wesley Mazac.

Added to our sick list were: Frances Kubala, Pauline Hervelka, Frances Brocer and Robert Kuban.

We wish everyone a speedy recovery.

Reports were read by Secretary, Willie Mae Kuykendall, Treasurer, Benita Walzel and Special Funds Chairman, Gilbert Walzel. All reports were accepted as read. Gilbert Walzel also read us the audit report for our lodge.

92, Fort Worth meeting, Easter egg hunt set for April 9 Lodge

Our next meeting will be on Sunday, April 9 at 2 p.m. Following the meeting at approximately 3 p.m., there will be an Easter egg hunt for the youngsters. If we promise to be good, there may be hunt for adult goodies as well.

Since the last meeting, we lost another beloved member, Flora Koci.

Flora was a retired teacher and was a member for over 50 years, having joined the lodge at the Houston Street location. She was active on the dance committee and was one of the first youth leaders at Lodge 92 along with Mary Hubenak. Flora was also a reporter for the Ladies' Circle as well as serving as installing officer for the Ladies' Circle. Inez Krivanek and Flora had the distinction of being the first members who were not of Czech extraction. Condolences go to the Koci family on the loss of their dear relative.

Renovations Continue The television set has been installed in the bar area and provides a very welcome addition for our viewing pleasure. John Paprskar indicated that preliminary plans are about 90 percent complete for the renovation of the cloak room, display case and front entrance. John always does a great job in this regard and it is appreciated. We hope to be able to approve the plans at our next meeting so that work can begin on the improvements.

Gordon and Cheryl Hubenak did a great job of preparing the meal after the lodge meeting. Mona Hattendorf and Liz Howard will do the honors at our next meeting as mentioned earlier.

Anniversary Celebration Plans are moving along nicely for our 90th anniversary celebration and Czech Heritage Day Celebration on Saturday, September 16, 2000. The bands are the Jodie Mikula Orchestra of Ennis and the Fabulous Six of Pflugerville plus a lot more great entertainment, food and drink. Reserve the date now! Many of our members view this a homecoming opportunity to see their friends at this annual event.

Congratulations to Martha Durham on being the top insurance sales producer in District Three. Also to Evelyn Spacek, Pamela Durham and Helen Kubala for making sales so that Lodge 92 won the $1,000 Incentive Award.

Lodge 139, Danbury scholarship applications must be received by May 1 Danbury Lodge 139 announces that a $500 scholarship will be awarded to a qualifying 2000 high school graduating lodge member. The student must be a member of the SPJST since the end of his/her freshman year and must be in the top 15 percent of his/her class. The applicant must include a letter from the school counselor stating his/her grade point average and the student's standing in the class. The application must be received before May 1, 2000. The Warrenton SPJST Lodge 179 held their March meeting at the Lions Building in Carmine on Thursday, March 9.

Following the meeting, refreshments were served. Games were played and all enjoyed the fried chicken meal.

180, Burleson planning Easter/spring dance Lodge

We did not hear anyone yelling that they had found that pot of gold at our St. Patrick's Day dance held March 11, but we hope that everyone went home with a little bit of luck. Thank you, everyone, for all your help at the dance. As usual, we could not have done it without our members. We had a new band playing for us, the Lone Star Band. Thank you for coming to our rescue when the Rio Grande Band could not play as scheduled.

Celebrate the Season Our next dance will be held on April 8. This will be an Easter dance celebrating Easter and spring. Maybe that Easter bunny will come hop, hop, hopping in with his Easter basket of goodies. The doors will open at 7:45 p.m.

The dance will be from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. It is BYOB. The kitchen and soda bar will be open for business.

The High Stakes band will play for your dancing pleasure. Everyone come and enjoy a springtime celebration.

Lodge 183, Arlington presents update on lodge workshop and awards banquet

Supreme Lodge officers and District Directors. We also heard the winning speeches from the SPJST State King and Queen, Paxton Davies and Collette Kenney. We then had question and answer sessions—mostly about the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum.

We broke for lunch and got to hear some wonderful music fronted by a singer from the Czech Republic. We were glad to see District Three Director Johnnie Krizan. He had a funeral to attend in the morning and arrived in the afternoon. In addition to being District Three Director, he also was awarded for being a top producer of insurance.

That's quite an accomplishment.

We then took a break and visited with our brothers and sisters and readied for the banquet. The awards banquet began and lodges qualifying for the incentive program were honored. We were especially moved by the speech for Fraternalist of the Year Helen Hegwood.

Congratulations, Helen, from all of us at Lodge 183. You are very deserving and quite modest! Congratulations also to Lodge 88, Houston for receiving the Century Award in the incentives program. Our lodge did not do as well as we have done in the past, but next year, we will do better. We did get our picture taken though and we had a great turnout for the workshop.

More acclaims are in order for all of the tremendous producers of insurance certificates, especially the million dollar and above producers. That's great!

The wonderful meal of roast beef and trimmings was delicious as well as the desserts of wonderful cakes. Thank you for having us there as your guests, Lodge 25. It was an enjoyable day for everyone. Also thanks for the great souvenir glasses. Hope to see everyone at the convention in June.

Born December 9, 1910 in San Felipe, Texas, Mary was the daughter of John Schiller and Mary (Seda) Schiller. She was raised in the San Felipe and Frydek areas and attended the Frydek Public School.

On December 2, 1930, Mary and Eddie Joe Slovak were married in Sealy. She was a member of the Wesley Brethren Church, SPJST Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville and was a full-time homemaker.

She is survived by her daughter, Lillie M. Shupak of Nelsonville, Gladys E. Janczak and husband, Lawrence of Rosenberg, Jeraldine A. Braswell of Pasadena; son, Edwin "Sonny" Slovak and wife, Kathleen of Bellville; half-sister, Olga Mikeska of Katy; nine grandchildren; and 16 greatgrandchildren.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, John and Mary Schiller; husband, Eddie Joe Slovak; two infant siblings (a brother and a sister); her twin sister, Annie Syptak; sister, Theresa Schiller; and son in-law, Edwin Shupak.

Serving as pallbearers were Buddy Slovak, Danny Slovak, Ed Shupak, Jr., Ronnie Shupak, Jimmy Loesch and Jerry Janczak. Honorary pallbearers were Allen Jamail and David Babin.

Memory of Dorothy Martinek In

Funeral services for Dorothy Martinek, 71, of Columbus and formerly of Ellinger, died February 15, 2000 in Columbus Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellinger with burial in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Frelsburg. The Reverend Monsignor Ben Mazurkiewicz officiated.

Born November 8, 1928 in Frelsburg, she was the daughter of Pete R. and Cecilia 0. (Meyer) Schuette.

She married Arnold Martinek September 19, 1950. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1974. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellinger, St. Mary's Altar Society, Hermann Sons in Ellinger and SPJST Lodge 51, Ellinger.

Survivors include daughter and son in-law, Nina and Glenn Holub of Columbus; two sons and daughters inlaw, Douglas and Barbara Martinek and Joe and Sharon Martinek of Columbus; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of SPJST Lodge 201, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member, WILLIAM FRANK (BILL) STARK, of Bleiblerville. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, February 7, 2000 at the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Reverend Michael Groseclose officiating.

Interment followed in the National Cemetery.

Mr. Stark passed away Saturday, February 5 in Bellville at the age of 76 years.

Born August 4, 1923 in Mill Creek Switch, Texas, he was the son of Otto Theo and Annie Mary (Janko) Stark.

He grew up and attended school at Victoria School in Bleiblerville. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. On June 28, 1951, he was united in marriage with Virginia Ann Luetge at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Houston. They made their home in Houston where Bill was employed as a welder for Wyatt's Metal and Boiler Works. Bill and Virginia have made their home in Bleiblerville since 1969 where Bill was employed by Austin County Road and Bridge until his retirement in 1985. He and his wife owned and operated Stark's Grocery since 1969 and have been members of the Nelsonville Brethren Church.

Bill was a member of SPJST Lodge 201, Sons of Hermann, American Legion Post in Shelby and the VFW Post 8790 in Houston. He enjoyed playing baseball and was inducted into the Old Timers Hall of Fame in Schulenburg. He also enjoyed bowling and playing dominoes.

He is survived by his wife of more that 48 years, Virginia Ann Stark of Bleiblerville; daughters, Danita Jean Schovajsa and her husband, Billie of Bleiblerville and Serena Rose Krueger and her husband, Darrell also of Bleiblerville; grandchildren, Candy Janish and her husband, Tim of Bellville, Tara and Ginny Schovajsa and Chase and Colby Krueger, all of Bleiblerville; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Brandon, Jacob and Ross Janish, all of Bellville; sister, Mamie Lorenz of Houston; brothers, Quintes Stark of Addicks and Franklin Stark of Tyler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Adela Zwahr, Frances Wavra, Alice Thielemann and Lorine Koester; and brothers, Alexander and James Stark.

Pallbearers were Barry Maresh, Boyd Ueckert, John Susen, Jr., Alvin Schulz, Jr.; Leland Maeckel, Danny Duron, Sr., Terry Shupak and Gary Shupak.

Services were under the direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville.

He was born January 25, 1925 in Ennis, Texas, the son of John F. and Frances Holy Cervenka. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe Louis, Melvin Louis and George Cervenka.

Services for Delbert Lewis Hovorak, 58 of College Station were held at 10 a.m. Saturday February 26, 2000 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.

The Reverend John McCaffrey officiated. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Hovorak died Tuesday at the College Station Medical Center.

He was born in Caldwell. Mr Hovorak was an electrician at Texas A&M University, a rancher and the former ow :'r of the LaSalle Barber Shop.

He was a 30-year member of the St. Joseph Ushers Club. Mr. Hovorak was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1834, KJZT Society No. 6, and SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. He ushered at Texas A&M University football games at Kyle Field for 37 years; was an officer with the St. Joseph School Boosters Club; coached Little League Baseball; served on the Mt. Calvary Cemetery Board; was the auditor of the Slavonic Mutual Insurance Co; and was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hovorak of College Station; a son and daughter in-law, David and Amy Hovorak of College Station; a daughter and son in-law, DeAnne and Mike Bellott of College Station; a granddaughter; and his mother, Milady Annie Hovorak of Bryan.

Memorials may be given to St. Joseph School Trust Fund.

Expression of sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 47, Seaton, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, ED B. SKRABANEK. Funeral services for Ed B. Skrabanek, 89, of Temple and formerly of Rosebud, were held at 3 p.m.

Monday, January 31, 2000 at Seaton Brethren Church with Reverend Al Newby and Dr. Tom Henderson officiating. Burial followed in Seaton Cemetery. Mr. Skrabanek died Saturday, January 29 in a Temple care center.

Mr. Skrabanek was born in Holiday to John and Anna Fojt Skrabanek on January 15, 1911. They moved to the community of Stringtown in Bell County. He married Lillie J. Vitek on January 15, 1942. They were married 58 years. They lived in Travis and when a fire destroyed their first home, they moved to Burlington and Wilson communities and then moved to East Bell County in 1954 where he farmed and worked for Baugh Taxidermy. He volunteered at the Temple Eye Center.

After retirement, they moved to Temple and have resided there since.

Preceding him in death were seven brothers, Bill, Frank, Joe, William, John, Henry and Fred; and three sisters, Albina Martinets, Frances Marek and Mary Dukatnik.

He was a member of Seaton Brethren Church where he worked as a custodian for 38 years retiring this position October 31, 1999. He was a member of the Seaton Sunday School Czech Class for most of his adult life and then a member of Adult Fellowship Class. He was a charter member of the Men's Brotherhood where he held the position of Financial Secretary for several years.

He sang in the choir and was a member of Seaton Mutual Aid Society No. 16, where he held the position of Vice President for several years. He did lawn service for the church several years using push mowers only. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47 and back in the 50s and 60s, he volunteered to park cars at the lodge picnics. He was a member of Farm Bureau.

He loved to garden. He grew all kinds of vegetables and loved to grow sunflowers and hollyhocks. He loved to fish and play with is dog, Tip. He liked to crack pecans for family and friends.

Survivors are his wife, Lillie J.

Skrabanek of Temple; two sons and spouses, Edward and Nancy Skrabanek, James and Joyce Skrabanek; two daughters and spouses, Dorothy and Leonard Mikeska, Ruth and Glenn Psencik, all of Temple; four sisters, Ella Bartek of Temple, Lillie Dana of Wichita Falls, Stacie Koch of Azle and Julia Martinec of San Angelo; six grandchildren, Mark Mikeska and wife, Cheryl of Bellaire, Denise Mikeska and husband, Charles of Temple, Scott Skrabanek and wife, Teresa of Cypress, Gary Skrabanek and Erin Skrabanek of Temple, Timothy Psencik of College Station; three step-grandchildren, Stacy Kabler and husband, Steve of Temple, Rhonda Wilson of Temple and Rebecca Ham of College Station. Two greatgrandsons, Ray Mikeska IV of Temple and Joshua Mikeska of Bellaire and step-great-granddaughter, Stephanie Kabler of Temple.

Pallbearers were grandsons and good neighbor, Tony Talley. Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Vitek, Jerry Tyroch, Jerry Haisler, Billie Young, Calvin Johnson, Steve Kabler and Bob Avery.

Sheffield Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Seaton Brethren Church.

Services for Vlasta Louise Marek, 81, of Zabcikville, were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 29, 2000 at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Reverend Calvin Vanderwerf officiating.

Mrs. Marek died Sunday, February 27 in a Temple nursing home. Burial was in Seaton Cemetery.

She was born in Bell County to Frank Joe Marek and Thereza Coufal. She attended the Thompson School in Bell County. She was a lifelong resident of the county. She married Raymond Joe Marek on June 1, 1943 at which time they owned the Red Ranger Grocery. He preceded her in death June 27, 1956.

She worked for the Temple Laundry and Dry Cleaners for 22 years. She was a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone (where she, her husband and family were very active all through the years), RVOS Insurance and Ocker Brethren Church.

Survivors are a son, Gene Marek of Zabcikville; four daughters, Doris Coots and Rosamond "Patsy" Baker, both of Zabcikville, Ramona Gerich of Cyclone and Angela Griggs of Manor; two stepdaughters, Louise Zavodny and Bernice Sebek of Red Ranger; sister, Ella Machalek of Pflugerville; 28 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Czech Cultural Center Houston sponsors education exhibit at springfest The Czech Cultural Center Houston will be in the educational spotlight at the 5th Annual Czech Springfest 2000 in Houston at the SPJST Lodge 88.

1435 Beall Street at 15th Street in the Heights, Houston, Texas, Sunday, March 26, 2000 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Each year a special day is set aside when we honor the Czech/Slovak people, their heritage, customs and cuisine in the spring. The focus of our Center is to take this opportunity to invite everyone in the community to attend the event, even those not of Czech heritage as an educational experience of a great and proud culture.

The event will include a traditional Czech Sunday dinner, the Kovandas Czech Band, the Bobby Jones Czech Band, Czech Heritage Singers and Dancers will entertain throughout the day. The Cesky Folkiorni Soubor z Texasu Dancers will perform with the colorful and exciting cimbal ensemble providing the music. We are especially proud to have several members of the The Czech Cultural Center Houston participate in the dance group.

Many of the Czech folk arts such as egg decorating, traditional Czech pioneer wine making and violin making will be featured with displays and information. A genealogy room will be set up and information will be made available upon request. A silent auction and prize drawing for a pass for two on Southwest Airlines will benefit a scholarship fund.

The Czech Cultural Center Houston/The Market Place will be well represented with authentic Czech crystal, fine Czech crystal jewelry, hand painted porcelain and pottery, hand crafted dolls from different Czech regions, Christmas ornaments, resource and story books for adults and children and many other Czech/Slovak products. We will feature the world famous very sought-after Bohemian garnet jewelry. These garnets are like none other, with the beautiful deep rich red color from only one region of Bohemia in the Czech Republic.

The Czech Cultural Center Houston//The Market Place is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization promoting and celebrating the culture, language, arts and scholarship of Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia and Silesia.

We are an all-volunteer operated facility. All our proceeds go toward building a permanent facility in the

Reunions Bezdek Family Reunion The descendants of Josef and Anna (Polasek) Bezdek will hold their family reunion on March 26 at Lone Star Hall, 1111 North Davis in West.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m.

The registration fee is $2 fro individuals, $3 for a couple and $5 for a family.

This money will be used to pay the expenses. Drawings will be to award prizes and there will also be a silent auction. Anyone wishing to donate to the silent auction is encouraged to do so.

The meal will be served about 12:30 p.m. Please bring enough prepared food and dessert for your family.

Bread, tea, coffee, cups, plates and eating utensils will be furnished.

A display table will be set up for family memorabilia, including photos, clippings, clothing, etc. Please bring items to show.
