Let's Build on Our Strengths Imagine the Possibilities

Call me anxious. Call me excited.

Take your pick. Whatever the word, I am ready to see the SPJST usher in a new era of growth and development: Fraternal insurance programs and fraternal activities that will set the standard for others to follow.

Big dreams? Yes. Big enough to capture the imagination of our members and prospective members. Big enough to bring new life and vitality to our 112 lodge families and to countless new lodges around the state ...

Dreams that are too big? No. I don't think so. It's the big dreams — the big ideas — that bring unity and direction to a family --- to a lodge — to a Society.

As an example, already the feedback that I've received on the SPJST's decision to pursue 501 (c) (3) non-profit status for our Library, Archives and Museum has been overwhelmingly positive. As one dear lady said to me by telephone this past week, "Why did it ever take so long?"

Why does anything take so long?

Maybe it's all in the timing. Maybe it takes that sense of urgency to sneak up on you and say, "Hey, friend, you'd better get moving if you don't want to get left behind." Maybe it's a combination of both. Whatever the reason, it's happening — and it's a good thing.

Moreover, it gets right to the heart of one of our Society's purposes — as defined in our By-Laws — which is to keep alive and encourage "the cherished traditions of the Czech history, culture, heritage and family."

What next?

As the old saying goes, "Success breeds success." It's an attitude fueled by initiative, creativity and accepting responsibility to get the job done. It's an invigorating process that begins by zooming in on the opportunities that exist all around us.

Knowledge is power. As you may or may not know, our Insurance Department, including our field personnel and volunteer sales force, really had to jump through some hoops this past year. As a result of legislative actions, it became necessary for our sales representatives to obtain various degrees of licensure. To date, nearly 180 of our sales representatives have knuckled down and did what it takes to get their selling credentials in order. That kind of dedication is impressive.

With the heightened emphasis on training these last couple of years, we're ready to "zoom" in on our membership and prospective members and deliver the good news about SPJST fraternal life insurance in our lodge halls, meeting

places and public gatherings around the state. SPJST offers top-notch life insurance, annuity and mortgage lending programs and the benefit of having a local sales representative and the Home Office to assist you as your needs change.

Value-added benefits. Really, now, that covers a wide range — everything from the Vestnik and fraternal programming to our local lodge activities.

There's just so much untapped potential. I get charged up just thinking_ of the things we could do.

Just two examples: How about regular seminars held around the state that focus on such relevant topics such as life insurance, estate planning, long-term care, will preparation, and related topics. Or — on the lighter side — consider the value-added benefits of an SPJST travel program — offering family group and senior group travel — in state, domestic and abroad. These are just two examples; however, they help to illustrate that with a little creativity and initiative, we can make the SPJST a more dynamic and inviting fraternal benefit society.

Just as the SPJST Youth Program benefits from the regular and constant support of dedicated members, the key to the success of any new programming effort will be getting people involved. A good way to start is to get people talking about their common interests and exploring new opportunities for fraternal programming. Regardless of when and where they meet, what's most important is that our members have the chance to express their good ideas and then know that they will play a dominant role in helping to define their solutions. From the Panhandle to the Rio Grande Valley and all points in between — we have the connections, the talent and the leadership skills necessary to position the SPJST for success in the years ahead.

To make real and measurable progress takes action. In many parts of the state, the SPJST serves as an active and valuable community asset. In other areas, our local lodges need help.

Approximately one-third of our lodges made it through 1999 with little or no reportage in the Vestnik. In those areas where our lodges are prospering, let's work to identify the factors that are contributing to their success and share them with each other. In the areas that need help, let's evaluate each situation on a case by case basis and make a determined effort to see how the SPJST can make a positive difference in the community. Possibilities (Continued from page 2.) lodges may be able to partner with school, community or other fraternal groups and get involved in meaningful community and service projects.

Without question, it would take lots of energy to facilitate such a effort, but these are the kind of things we must do to ensure the growth and development of the SPJST. Just last week, SPJST received word from A.M. Best, the independent rating service which evaluates insurance organizations across a wide range business variables. Again, SPJST emerged with a B++ (Very Good) rating. The rating reflects the order's "strong capitalization, conservatively invested asset porfolio and consistently profitable operating results." Further, the report cited the FIC (Fraternal Insurance Counsellor) program and licensing of sales representatives as a commitment by the SPJST to develop a more effective "needs based" selling force. Granted, all of this is good!

Now, let's do what it takes to move up a notch or two — or three — and achieve the top rating!

What will it take? According to Vice President Mikeska, "We need to reverse the Society's decline in membership.

That includes both the writing of new members and the retention of existing members."

We can do that.

Establishing a clearly-defined marketing strategy that identifies common goals, makes specific job assignments and then communicates this information throughout the organization would be a prudent and proactive action. Such a team approach, underscored by initiative, creativity and accountability, can help keep the SPJST on track and become all that it can be.

For inspiration, we can look at IBM's riches to rags to riches story. Just seven short years ago, at the end of 1993, the computing giant posted net losses of $8 billion. That's a staggering amount of money in anyone's books. In spite of IBM's commanding lead in the computer industry in the preceding 50 years, the company simply failed to capitalize on the personal computing rage that took the nation by stoiiii in the '80s and '90s.

In April of 1993, Lou Gerstner took over the reigns as IBM's CEO. It was a trying time for the organization. Cost management and streamlining had become chief concerns. IBM was con-

sidering splitting its divisions into separate independent businesses. Gerstner resisted internal pressures to split the company. He understood that the company's future resided not in tearing itself apart but in pulling itself together.

Above all else, he became a force for discipline and accountability in an organization coasting on its reputation.

However, as you can well imagine, no turnaround this far-reaching can be the work of a CEO alone. IBM's comeback has been a grassroots revival, driven by a network of departmental leaders who made it their business to bring new life and vitality to the firm. "Get connected," became the organization's watchwords.

Applying a customer-oriented sensibility and strategic-thinking expertise, CEO Gerstner took dramatic actions to stabilize the company. These steps included rebuilding IBM's product line, making significant cost reductions and establishing a major internet marketing presence. By the end of 1996, the market value of the company increased by more than $50 billion. Today, "Big Blue," as they are known in the industry, is again flying high.

SPJST went online with its website spjst.com — on January 10, 2000.

The launch represents a broader effort on the part of SPJST to communicate more openly with its members and prospective members. Moving forward from this point, we have the opportunity to begin more active communication with our various publics.

The advent of the telephone did not eliminate the need for person-to-person contacts. It merely facilitated the process. And so it will be with the Internet. The new technology will not eliminate the need for personal interaction within the SPJST. It will enhance our ability to communicate news, information and meet the needs of our members. In so many ways, the sky is the limit. The important thing to remember is to aim high and then deliver.

There's a convention coming up in June. Let's take it as an opportunity to make good things happen for the SPJST. Until then, please, let's make the most of our time together — in our lodges, district and statewide meetings — and communicate what we want our Society to look like and what we want it to stand for in the 21st century. With the emphasis on ideas and idealism, it can be an invigorating and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

President Leshikar stated that SPJST is doing good not "setting fires" but moving along — looking good. He complimented the officers and members in keeping Lodge 1 alive. He also mentioned that plans are being discussed for a larger museum at Temple.

The question was raised in regards to possibly storing the stage curtain from Lodge 1. He thought that it could be stored in air conditioned facilities but would have no room to exhibit it. In regards to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship, Lodge 1 voted to donate $250 to the fund. President Leshikar stated that donations made by lodges out of lodge funds will be listed as a lodge donation and gifts of $50 or more will appear in bold type in the Vestnik.

Society of Texas. The lodge has let them use hall free of charge for singing and dancing practices allowing them to continue the Czech/Moravian culture in Fayette County in an effort to help promote Czech heritage. The group has performed all over the state of Texas at different celebrations and festivals. One of the highlights was performing the 1993 Roznov Pod Radostem, Moravia International Folk Festival. The group has offered to sing or dance for a meeting or program for the lodge.

At the close of the meeting, President Leshikar thanked the lodge for the donation for the SPJST Scholarship Fund and the invitation to the luncheon and in turn, President Polansky thanked President Leshikar for helping and supporting the lodge.

79, Corpus Christi reports on January meeting Lodge

The January 16 meeting was called to order by President Jerry Sijansky at 2 p.m. State Field Representative Larry Wagner did the honor of swearing in the officers for 2000. Brother Larry, wife, Kathy and their children, Morgan and Shawnie were our guests. Welcome and do come again.

There was a moment of silence observed in memory of Brother Emil Stefek who had died since our last meeting. Condolences to the family.

The minutes of the December meting were read by Secretary Helen Pavelka and were approved. The financial report by Treasurer Milly Elzner was approved. She read a summary of income and expenses for the past year, said we lost seven members who had died. She had sent the $25 donation to the Scholarship Fund in memory of Brother Emil Stefek.

Announcements A letter of thanks from Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center for the donation of proceeds of the fund raiser on October 31 was read. Also, a letter for 50-year member pins was read and this year, we have only one member, Johnny Ray Dlabaja who is eligible. It will be presented at the awards banquet sometime in April. More details later.

State Field Representative Larry Wagner talked about last year's sales and said that District Seven did not make its quota. He said Lodge 79 made the First Step award. We fell short of gaining new members. He suggested that delegates make room reservations for the convention as soon as possible. He said District Seven Director Bob Bayer couldn't come for this meeting, but that he will attend the next meeting.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner thanked the lodge for the $50 donation for kolaches for the migration mass and social. There were 16 different ethnic groups represented and the Czech kolaches were a big hit—they didn't last long. He said we had a good year, but just fell short of members. He said Sokol, Corpus Christi is thinking about having a fund raiser later in the year and we will work with them on it.

The $50 donation for January was given to Literacy Council. One of our members, Sister Anna M. Moss is active in the organization as a tutor.

They can always use donations—they are for a good cause.

A tentative date for the District Seven Spring Meeting was set for March 26. President Sijansky will check with District Seven Officers if it is okay.

President Jerry Sijansky said the sales reps for the lodge held a brief meeting prior to the regular meeting to discuss increasing sales. All the members can help by recommending prospects!

The next meeting is on Sunday, February 20 at 2 p.m. at the hall, to be followed by usual svacina.

Food and Fun

Our chefs are preparing a delicious baked chicken dinner and the trimmings, including tea. The cost of an adult dinner will be $5 and $4 for children under 12. Pastry and coffee will also be available. The noon hour entertainment will consist of performance by our Lodge Concert Orchestra directed Jim Rohde and our Choral Club directed by Helen Hegwood.

Thereafter, enjoy playing bingo, while waiting for the afternoon dance to start.

Music will be provided by Donnie Wavra from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The admission to enter the ballroom for the dance will be $4.

During the afternoon, the Youth Club will have a prize drawing and serve their famous ice cream. If you haven't tried their ice cream, this is a must.

Dear Members and Friends, Did you see the lunar eclipse last week? It was beautiful, but eerie.

Well, this month, February, is leapyear. Let's see, Fred Buri must be about 12 years old, since his birthday falls on February 29th and he has just one birthday every four years. Live it up, Fred.

Yours truly has a new great-granddaughter. Cynthia and Don Beck, our daughter and son-in-law who live in Bartlesville, Oklahoma are the proud grandparents. She was born on Saturday, January 29. Her name is Sydney Nicole Beck and she weighed eight pounds, one ounce, and was 201/4 inches long. That's a pretty big girl. Her proud parents are Lisa and Don Beck, Jr, who live in Atlanta, Georgia. This is their first child. That makes four great-grandchildren for my husband and me. You don't really think you are getting any older — only everyone else is —until you look around and see all these little ones and they are your great-grandchildren.

Then you realize you ARE getting older and there is nothing we can do about it.

On Wednesday, January 26, we went to Coushatta Indian Reservation in Louisiana, to gamble of course, and had a great time. Georgia and Gene Barcak made sandwiches. Earline Hoffman made banana nut bread and our soft drinks were furnished by Pres Clooney. Thanks to all who made this trip so enjoyable. You know, you don't have to win a lot of money to have a good time.

Ruth and Bob Martinek just returned from a trip to Big Bend National Park.

First, they went to the Sun Polka Fest at San Benito in the valley. They danced to the music of Leo Majeks, Sound Connection, Jodie Mikula and the Dutka Brothers bands. They danced 10 hours Saturday and seven (Continued on page 10.)

I'll bet their tongues were dragging.

There were approximately 35 dance couples from the Houston area. They went on to South Padre Island, then followed the Rio Grande River to Progreso and into Mexico for some shopping. They continued following the Rio Grande to Big Bend National Park, where they spent the night, then on to Presidio and Fort Stockton. This was a beautiful trip. I'm sure they had a wonderful time and it is beautiful country. Thanks for letting me know about your trip, Ruth.

Kathy Trefell and Margaret Spahr are on the sick list. Jake Jacob is at home from the hospital after a 29 day stay. That man is a walking miracle.

He has been through so much. Keep on truckin', Jake. Remember them all in your prayers.

Anniversary Day Dinner Remember, you guys, this is Valentine month. Bring your sweetheart or wife and children to the lodge for anniversary day dinner on Sunday, February 13 and celebrate Valentine's day with us, as well as our anniversary.

We are having baked chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy and Italian string beans, tea or coffee. Cost is just $5 for adults and $4 for children. Where can you go to get a dinner like that for just $5? The youth will be selling homemade ice cream and the Birthday Sisters will have pastries for sale.

Ladies, please bring your pastries to the lodge Saturday or Sunday. We will also be playing bingo and the orchestra will play, along with the choral group, who will be singing.

Who Is It? She was born on August 16, 1924 in Wallis, Texas. She graduated from Lamar High School in Richmond, Texas and attended M&M Business College. She worked at Schumacher Wholesale Company as a typist and at Todd Shipbuilding as a stenographer.

She left Todd Shipbuilding to get married at Rosenberg Bre thren Church on August 4, 1945. She then went to work for the Houston Transit Company as a typist. She left the transit company to raise her children.

She and her husband were transferred to Louisiana in 1968 where she worked for Industrial Air and Hydraulic Company in the purchasing department. She and her family moved back to Texas in 1985 (and she was s0000 glad.) She attends Houston Brethren church where she was a Sunday School teacher for 15 years, and has also been secretary in their Christian Sisters group. She was Publicist for her children's school PTA and was a cub scout leader. She has been a member of Lodge 88 since 1969 — 31 years — and has been on the Entertainment Committee for ten years.

She works in the kitchen or wherever she is needed on special occasions at the lodge. She is a delegate to the SPJST convention in June, 2000.

Who Is It? She is Georgie Jurchak who is married to Sydney. She has two children, Vicki and Ronney, and two grandchildren, who belonged to their daughter, Beverly, who passed away. We are proud to have you at our lodge, Georgie.

Stay in Touch Let me stress again, how I need you to please tell me of events happening in your lfe, such as marriages, deaths, children, grandchildren's accomplishments, so I can write about them.

Lodge 172, Pasadena report on January meeting On Wednesday, January 26, 2000 Lodge 172 held their first regular meeting of the year.

The meeting was called to order by President Robert Mayfield, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

First Vice President Bobbye Johnson reminded everyone to be sure to write down everything that they do so that it will enable us to turn in accurate Fraternal Activities Coordinator reports.

Treasurer Tennie Walla informed everyone that some of us will be getting our 1099 forms and to check them for accuracy.

President Mayfield stated that it was time to nominate an auditing committee. The three members elected to serve on the auditing committee are Alvin Sefcik, Carla Krenek and Lillie Mae Peter.

Robert wished everyone with a birthday in February a Happy Birthday.

President Mayfield told everyone at the meeting that we would be electing delegates to the convention which will be held in Temple June 12-14.

It was mentioned that Wednesday, June 14 is our executive meeting night and some of the officers would not be in town, therefore a motion was made that our meeting date be moved to Wednesday, June 7.

Workshop February 26 Robert reminded everyone about the workshop being held in Ennis on February 26. He also told everybody that the District Five Spring meeting would be at our lodge this year. He stated that at the meeting held at the lodge on Saturday, January 15, it was decided that the menu would consist of roast beef, buttered potatoes, green beans, tea and coffee and the members would be asked to donate cakes, pies etc., and each lodge would be asked to donate door prizes and prizes for bingo.

Robert stated that Bobbye Johnson decided to accept the nomination of Entertainment Chairman also elected to

serve on the Entertainment board are Robert and Jo Mayfield and Weldon and Marjorie Wilkerson, as well as Mike Johnson.

It was decided that we have our workers party on Friday, February 11 at 6:30 p.m. It was also decided that the party be different this year. The lodge would furnish the meat, coffee and tea, but we are asking those attending to please bring a covered dish, salad or dessert. We are also asking that those planning to attend the party to please call the lodge and leave a message on the machine to let us know so that we will be able to get an estimate of the amount of meat we will need.

We were happy to see Alex Garcia back at our January meeting after learning that Kathryn Fritz was ill and we wish her a speedy recovery. We received a thank you from Theresa Baca for the flowers and card she received during the loss of her brother in-law. We received requests from Rogers and Academy ISDs for donations for their Project Celebrations for upcoming high school graduates.

The minutes stand approved as corrected.

On December 14, trustees met and elected the following chairpersons: Kitchen—Bob Fritz; Bar—Otis Beck; Bingo—Josie Mitchell; Lodge Rental—Bill Hutka; Bingc Bookkeeper—Jackie Beck Several goals were discussed for the new year including the feasibility of upgrading our restrooms for the handicapped.

Lodge Hall Maintenance On January 12, trustees held their regular monthly meeting and voted that lodge President Bill Hutka and Vice President Otis Beck will act as lodge Fraternal Activities Coordinator/s. We are hoping to get the front doors replaced and would also like to change the entrance to our restrooms to not only allow for handicapped access but also easier access for our patrons. Trustees approved use of the lodge for the Academy Booster Club Banquet on May 6.

Once again, we are happy to appoint Libbie Bartek, as chair for the Sunshine Committee. Where we would be without Libbie on this committee? She is truly indispensable in that she knows our members and is very dedicated to alerting lodge members of members that are ill or those that have passed away.

Expresion of Sympathy We were sad to learn of the passing of two of our members, Mary Edith Dawson and Dorman Hunter.

Dorman was a very special person.

To those that knew him usually referred to him as "catfish" Hunter.

He was dubbed that name because he was an avid sportsman. Not only did he enjoy fishing, but also hunting. He couldn't wait for deer season or dove season. Dorman was also a special friend to employees at the SPJST Home Office. When he came to visit, he would always have a joke that we hadn't heard yet and, of course, and he simply couldn't wait to share it with us. Dorman, we will miss you!

Well, we have two new members, Jessica Rodriguez and Laura Degallado.

Bill reviewed with us how our lodge could attain an extra delegate prior to the SPJST Convention. Thanks to Linda Johnson and Jerry Mikulas for the info. Bill also suggested that we delay action on the requests from the Academy and Rogers ISDs for funds for their Project Celebrations until we have received requests from surrounding schools. We would like to evenly donate funds to all.

In Memoriam Resolution of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, Texas and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge sister, ENNIS PEARL LATHAM, of Holland who passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2000 in a Belton nursing home at the age of 85.

Sister Latham was born in Bell County to Thomas J. and Pearl French Moss. She married Leslie William Latham in 1935 in Georgetown. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holland Sister Latham is survived by a daughter, Cedalia Kurtz of Holland; a sister, Vernie Faurie of Austin; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 18 in the Holland Cemetery with the Reverend Ron Bellomy officiating.

May our departed sister rest in eternal peace and her memory remain with us forever.

two scholarships The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas, CESAT, an organization whose purpose is to promote and perpetuate the Czech language and Czech culture in Texas announces the Maresh and Micek Scholarships for the 19992000 academic year.

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas, will grant two scholarships, one in the name of Dr. Eduard Micek and the other in the name of Dr. Henry R. Maresh. Dr. Micek was a professor of Czech language at the University of Texas. Dr. Maresh was a Houston physician. Both were active in the Czech cultural movement in Texas and both were avid supporters of Czech studies and higher education.

Application Guidelines

An applicant must be: • A Texas resident, or may be a nonresident enrolled in a Texas college or university.

• A post-secondary student majoring in Czech language or must be pursuing other degree programs with substantial emphasis on Czech subjects Application must be made by Monday, February 28, 2000. of Texas, Austin hosts Czech music symposium March 4 University

The Czech Studies program in the Slavic Languages Department of the University of Texas at Austin is pleased to announce a Czech music symposium to be held on Saturday, March 4, 2000 at the Austin Scottish Rite Theater. The symposium will feature Czech music scholars from around the country, presenting talks on Czech classical, jazz and folk music.

The symposium will end with a performance of two Czech classical musicians, a pianist and violinist from Prague.
