The motion picture, which is being shot in the Houston area, was brought to our attention recently by Stephen Chudej of Lodge 135, Ennis.

A two-time Emmy winner for his work on the Wishbone children's television series, Brother Chudej is assisting on the Houston production which chronicles the early career of boxer Muhammad Ali.

Get Your Free Business Listing in the Y2K SPJST Member Services Directory If you're a member and you've got a business - large or small get it listed in the Year 2000 SPJST Member Services Directory.

The Year 2000 Directory, which will be published in January, provides a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales representatives and free listings to members who are in a position to provide various products and services to other SPJST members.

In addition to these free listings, members will also have the opportunity to purchase additional advertising space as a way to further promote your business. The price for a standard business card size advertisement or "coupon," will be $25. Advertising revenues will help to defray the cost of printing.

Since the first SPJST Member Services Directory was published in 1995, it has consistently increased in size. In 1999, the directory included more than 600 business listings, ranging from accountants and auto mechanics to musicians, beauticians and physicians. Seasonal businesses and part-time businesses are all invited to participate in the directory.

Only those listings which are deemed "questionable" or those- Whith promote life insurance or other products available through the SPJST, will not be printed in the directory.

Through the first 11 months of 1999, sales represenatives wrote 1076 "qualifying member certificates," in conjunction with the 1999 Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards program.

"Qualifying certificates" include all teini, and whole life certificates except for the Modified Whole Life plan and certain annuities. Lodges participating in the program are working to achieve one of eight achievement awards, each of which is accompanied by a cash prize. To qualify for the awards, lodges must also complete a defined number of fraternal activities, as prescribed in the box at the bottom of this page.

District Seven reports on fall meeting and family fun day The District Seven Fall Meeting/Family Fun Day, hosted by Lodge 161, La Parita-Jourdanton was held Sunday, November 7, 1999 at the Longhorn Museum in Pleasanton, Texas with over ninety in attendance.

Lodge 161 President Ernest Spacek welcomed everyone, led the Pledge of Allegiance and voiced a prayer.

District President Frances McDonald opened the meeting.

Secretary Bettie House called the roll of officers and lodges. All officers were present. Lodges represented were 31, Yoakum; 79, Corpus Christi; 107, Floresville; 117, Robstown; 133, San Antonio; 161, La ParitaJourdanton; 202, Jourdanton.

New Rest Home Director Elected Due to the retirement of Rest Home Director Eugene Hrncir, an election was held the vacancy. Jerry Sijansky was duly elected.

Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir encouraged everyone to express their ideas to the Supreme Lodge. Kacir spoke on electing delegates to the convention and ad valorem taxes.

Workshop February 26 Director Bob Bayer spoke about loans available, Officers Workshop/ Lodge Incentive Awards Banquet February 26, 2000 in Ennis, Texas and the convention in Temple, June 11-14, 2000. Eight lodges are on the verge of qualifying for incentive awards and several new lodges are in the process of organizing.

State Field Representative Larry Wagner stated there are approximately fifteen new sales representatives and encouraged helping all sales reps boost

insurance sales, especially before the end of the year.

District Fraternal Activities Coordinator Pruski invited everyone to participate in the various games.

The District Seven Spring Meeting will be hosted by Lodge 79, Corpus Christi.

The meeting adjourned.

When Temple Junior College opened its doors in 1926, five instructors and 97 students were there to usher in a new era in higher education for Central Texas. Now, 74 years later, Temple College has an enrollment of 3,300 with a full-time faculty of 90.

Jakubik family celebrates 100 years of marriage On October 1, 1999, Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Jakubik of Troup celebrated 50 years of marriage. Their children, Frank and Charlsey Jakubik of Troup, and Rick and Debbie Jakubik of Whitehouse, each celebrated 25 years of marriage this year as well, making a total of 100 years of marriage for the Jakubik family being celebrated in 1999. The Jakubiks are members of Lodge 9, Snook.

Frank Jakubik and Lois A. Lewis were married on October 1, 1949 at the Czech Brethren Church in Caldwell, Texas. They have resided in Troup since 1973. Mr. Jakubik is enjoying retirement after 35 years in the manufacturing industry. They attend First Assembly of God Church in Troup, where Mr. Jakubik served as a deacon.

A reception given in their honor, was held on Sunday, September 26, 1999 at First Assembly of God Church in Troup and was hosted by their children.

The couple's grandchildren are Frank, Kevin and Stacy Jakubik all of Troup; and Robi and Tricia (Jakubik) Dean, Brad and Tami (Jakubik) Farr and Dusty Jakubik, all of Whitehouse. Their greatgrandson is Zachary Dean of Whitehouse.

81, Needville members enjoy Thanksgiving dinner at November meeting Lodge

On Sunday, November 21, 1999, Lodge 81, Needville met for their monthly meeting. We were pleased to have 38 members come to the meeting.

An invitation is always extended for anyone to join us.

The five dollar door prizes were won by Johnny Kujawa, Calvin Fojtik, Elsie Brdecka and Darlene Blinka.

District Five Director Louis Hanus graciously donated a few other prizes which were won by Benita Walzel, Willie Mae Kuykendall, Louise Newman, Jeanette Barnes and Arnold Dusek. Congratulations to these lucky winners!

After a prayer of thanks, a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey and dressing with a variety of side dishes and desserts was served. Sausage was also included with this meal. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Benita and Gilbert Walzel, Winifred and Edwin Susan, and Darlene and Alvin Blinka for baking the turkeys. I would also like to thank Willie Mae Kuykendall for making the delicious dressing. Also, a big thanks goes to Edward and Dorothy Kuban for taking care of the sausage. Thanks are also extended to the Kitchen Committee for getting everything ready. Finally, I would also like to thank the members for bringing all the side dishes and delicious desserts!

November Meeting At 1 p.m., President Vincent Newman called the meeting to order.

Willie Mae Kuykendall led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for the Texas A&M students who were killed in the tragic bonfire accident.

All officers answered the roll call.

Reports were read by Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall, Treasurer Benita Walzel, and Special Fund Chairman Gilbert Walzel. There were no corrections to the reports, so they were accepted as read.

Added to our sick list were Albina Fojtik, Bill Fojtik, Gusta Lee Leonard, Sidney Blinka, Johnnie Blinka, Mary Macek, and Bernie Tieike. We wish all of you a huge get well.

District Five Director Louis Hanus enlightened us on information from the Supreme Lodge and he also reminded us to continue with our incentive program. Thank you, Brother Hanus. You know you're always welcomed.

Under old business, it was election time again. All present officers were voted in by acclamation.

We had a very pleasant trip to Russia and many of the negative news reports about Russia appear to be stereotypes that we did not observe on our trip. We had read about the Russian Mafia and the epidemic of petty crime, but we never felt threatened on our trip.

Our friends from McKinney suggested taking peanut butter along because the food would be bland, but we found the food to be very tasty. As our departure approached and the war in Yugoslavia raged on, we read reports of Russian protests against NATO, but other than news reports, we saw no reaction in the streets to the war at all.

The guidebooks said that Russians would be rude to foreigners, but we found the Russians that we asked for assistance to be friendly and helpful.

The guidebooks also said that identity apparel would identify you as a foreigner, but this type of clothing is very popular with Russians themselves.

Moscow Olympic Games. This was a Russian hotel with a female attendant, a dezhurnaya, on each floor, and the suite was very adequate in inexpensive. Likewise, we found the Neva Hotel in St. Petersburg, which is located near the U.S. Consulate. The Neva was spartan but satisfactory and a nourishing breakfast was included.

Moscow's metro reportedly carries nine million Muscovites daily (more than any other subway system in the world). It is simple (if you have a map with both the Cyrillic names and the English translated names of the stations) to use and inexpensive (3 Rubles or about 12 cents per ride).

Moscow's metro system is one gigantic museum with stained glass windows, mosaics, crystal chandeliers, marble columns and bronze statues.

The Mayakovskaya station is spacious and elegant, accentuated by rows of stainless steel pillars.

In November 1941, Stalin spoke to the Supreme Soviet inside this station while the Germans advanced within a few miles of Moscow.

The Kremlin cathedrals and museums are magnificent structures and several days of our trip were spent visiting the Kremlin as well as Red Square, St. Basil's Cathedral and Lenin's Mausoleum. The Hermitage Museum and Peter and Paul Fortress were high points of our St. Petersburg visit. The remains'of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, except Anastasia, are interred in the cathedral at the fortress.

This trip to Russia was relatively easy to set up on the Internet and it turned out to be very enjoyable, even at the height of the NATO action in Yugoslavia.

Internet Offers Access The Internet played a key part in planning this trip to Russia. Visa applications were downloaded from the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Washington. A "sponsor" is required for a visa to Russia, but a hotel can act as a sponsor. We used a search engine to find the Molodyozhny Hotel in Moscow, which was built in 1980 just before the

Learning an old language a new way Granger teaches Czech via Flatonia classroom

Nazdar. That's Czech for "greetings." That's also only the beginning of what Kevin Greger, a Granger High School junior, is learning from his Czech class at Flatonia High School.

But Kevin doesn't have to drive all the way to Flatonia to take the class.

He just goes to his own school's library and flips the "on" switch.

Two television screens come to life—one revealing Kevin seated at his desk and the other capturing instructor Thadious Polasek in his classroom in Flatonia.

Mr. Polasek speaks and Kevin answers. It's like interactive television.

Mr. Polasek has been teaching Czech at Flatonia High School for 22 years. But this is the first year he has taught, and a student of his had learned, via distance-learning technology.

Both Flatonia, a small district southeast of Austin, Granger and nine other schools in Region XIII—a 15county area that includes Williamson County—received the technology this spring as part of a pilot project.

The other schools in the pilot project are Liberty Hill, Dime Box, NixonSmiley, Gonzales, Marble Falls, New Braunfels, Johnson City, St. Michael's Academy and the Texas School for the Deaf.

But the Flatonia-Granger Czech class is the only one that is up and running, said Virginia Duke, the curriculum and technology coordinator at Granger High School.

"I don't think any of the others got set up to go," she said.

But it's going in Granger and Flatonia, and so far, so good, according to both teacher and student.

"I was worried how it was going to be with the interaction," Mr. Polasek said in an interview via distancelearning technology. "But the students are interacting as a class."

Things on Kevin's end are working smoothly, too, Kevin said, noting that he made an A his first six-weeks.

"It's almost easier," he said. "If I don't get something, he'll keep working with me until I get it."

In addition to Kevin in Granger, Mr. Polasek has six students in his Flatonia classroom—five freshmen and one junior.

"The atmosphere is a little differ-

ent, and it's positively different," he said, "They're the most attentive group of young people I've ever had."

Mr. Polasek attributes part of that to the technological aspect and the fact that the students are always on camera. "They never know who's watching," he said.

A Normal Class When Kevin takes his seat everyday at 12:30 p.m., he gets his books out, like he would in any other class.

Except in this case, his teacher is on television screen. The class begins and flows with little disruption. The teacher's voice is clear, as is his image.

Kevin participates as he would in any other language class, answering questions in Czech, conjugating verbs and repeating vocabulary. Pronunciation has not been a problem, Mr. Polasek said.

"What we can do is really zoom in on the face if we need to," he said. "That was my concern. It was amazing how well they did."

But like with any new technology, the occasional glitch does happen.

Once, the audio segment was malfunctioning. Kevin could hear the class in Flatonia, but they could not hear him.

To continue with the class, Kevin's grandmother, Margaret Vrana, who works in the Granger superintendent's office and speaks Czech, sat in on the class to make sure Kevin was answering correctly.

"We're working around all the technical difficulties," Mr. Polasek said.

Homework is turned in via the "Elmo," a document reader similar to an overhead projector, except the image is projected on video. Kevin puts his homework on the Elmo and his teacher can grade it immediately.

Mr. Polasek also used the Elmo on his end for visual aids such as pictures to teach vocabulary.

There is a also a "smart-board" which works like an electronic chalkboard. On both ends, students and teachers can write on the flat, white board with special electronic pens and the image is broadcast on the screen.

Kristin Woods crowned Oklahoma Czech Princess Kristin Jordan Woods, 9, of Edmond, Oklahoma was crowned Oklahoma Czech Princess at the 34th Annual Oklahoma Czech Festival's Royalty ceremonies on Saturday October 1 in Yukon, Oklahoma. Kristin vied with six other contestants on personal interview, Czech costume modeling, and stage interview for the title.

Kristin is the daughter of Cecil and Tena Woods and has one brother, Jacoby. Tim and Mary Urbanek, her Czech grandparents, of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco were in attendance at the historic Yukon Czech Hall for the ceremonies.

Relatives James, Kathy, Kayla and Timothy Urbanek of Waco, Texas were also on hand for the one-day festival which attracted more than 40,000 visitors.

Kristin is a "straight-A" student in the fourth grade at Charles Haskell Elementary School and attends Cathedral of the Hills Church. Her Czech costume was designed and made by her and her mother. She received a crown, trophy, bracelet and free lifetime membership to the Oklahoma Czechs, Inc. She will represent them throughout Oklahoma for the 1999-2000 year. Kristin's mother, Tena (Urbanek) Woods, held the SPJST Queen Title in 1978-1979.

88, Houston reports on lodge and member activities Lodge

Well, here it is the busiest season of the year and I'm scrounging around trying to find something to put in my article. It seems everyone is too busy to give me much information, so I will share with you what I have.

We went to the Czech Heritage Society Christmas dinner at Lodge 88 on Saturday, December 4. The Lodge 88 orchestra played for this event.

They played before, during and after dinner. It was a very pleasant evening.

The youth group at Lodge 88 had their Christmas party on Tuesday, December 7th. The orchestra played and the choral group sang for the event which was enjoyed by all. The refreshment tables were set up in the shape of a Christmas tree, which was beautiful.

The children all got a gift and even we adults got a sack with oranges, apples and some candy. There was a beautiful cake and, of course, Santa Claus was there. Everyone really seemed to enjoy it.

The Men's Club will have their Christmas party on December 14th.

Member Updates Jerry Hurta fell from a ladder recently and has broken his arm. Jerry Ermis is now taking chemotherapy for his back. Wanda Kennedy has had a knee replacement, is doing fine and should be home by the time you read this. Viola Sostak Allen had the misfortune to fall and break her arm just before Thanksgiving. Leander Pflughaupt has had back surgery and he kept having bad headaches so they had to go back in because he had a leakage in his spine. He is doing fine now and has to start over with his recuperation. Let's remember all these people in our prayers.

Congratulations to Kristen Woods who was crowned Oklahoma Czech Princess on October 9.

Who Is It? He has a very unique name, a name folks remember. He was born in Houston in 1931 and attends St. Theresa's Church. He served four years in the Navy in the 50s. He was married in 1955 at All Saint's Church, has four children and six grandchildren. He worked for the City of Houston in the Water Department for 31 years from which he retired in 1993.

He joined SPJST in 1955 and has worked on several committees, has been on the Board and has been chairman of the Popcorn Committee for 28 years. He has been a delegate to the

Earlier, while his children were in the Youth Club, he chaperoned them to camp and other activities as required.

He worked the popular teen dances for ten years as part of the youth program in the late 1960s until the 1970s. He has been a member of the Men's Club since his retirement six years ago and helps any committee or officer of the lodge upon request and always helps on the spin wheel for Homecoming Day and Czech Day. The volleyball program he started was enjoyed many years. He is ready to help any of his fellow brothers and sisters in the name of fraternalism.

His other civic duties include patrolling his residential neighborhood each Monday morning and serving as co-captain of this watch team. He also works for the St. Vincent de Paul Society each Wednesday for the Food Bank. He finds time to play poker each Tuesday with fellow members of the Men's Club and, of course, he has fun at the popcorn machine each Thursday night for bingo.

Who is it? Remember, I said he had a name you wouldn't forget? It's "King" Hegwood, who is married to Helen Hegwood and their four children are Vicci, Vivian, Vincent and Vernon.

Their grandchildren are Kelsie, Leigha, Brent, Braden, Emily and Abby.

The idea is to be better than your best friend's opinion of you.

196, HoustonWest hosts annual Christmas party Lodge

Lodge 196, Houston-West will hold its annual Christmas party on Sunday, December 19, 1999 beginning at 2 p.m. with a short business meeting.

Then we will have a sit-down dinner consisting of a fried turkey which is being donated and cooked by Alma and Marvin Schulz. Members are asked to bring a covered dish and/or a pie or dessert. Also, we are asking members to bring a sack of canned goods to be donated to the local fire department so they can be given to needy families in the area. Lodge youth are asked to bring old, unused Christmas cards so that we could take them to a nearby nursing home and be given to the residents. And Santa will make a brief visit to the lodge.

Heritage Society quarterly meeting report Czech

The State Czech Heritage Society of Texas held its Fall Quarterly Meeting Saturday, November 20, 1999 at the historic SPJST Lodge No. 1 in Fayetteville all decked out in fall decor with Czech exhibits with approximately 300 in attendance.

It was so great to see so many people of Czech descent congregate from all over the state for a day of fellowship in Fayetteville where so many of the first Czech immigrants settled. It was also nostalgic as well as they reminisced about activities they attended at the SPJST Hall which included not only meetings, but fun things as dances, birthday and wedding celebrations, school plays and basketball games, contests, etc.

They also commented that it was so nice to see the structure in its original condition other than the installation of indoor restroom facilities. However, as the day warmed up and the hall filled with people, several asked to have the air conditioning turned on.

Well, in this case, it was opening the shutters, windows and doors, turning

on the fans and having something cool to drink. The temperatures remained in the 70's and overall it was very pleasant day.

An Entertaining Event Many people began arriving at 9 a.m. as registration was at 9:30 a.m. with kolaches and coffee being served.

Entertainment began at 10 a.m. with Lee Roy Matocha on accordion and George Koudelka on clarinet providing the music for the Fayette Czech Singers and Dancers as they marched into the hall singing, "Kdys Sme Opustili Fayetteville" waving flags and mugs. Quite often the audience joined in singing their favorite Czech songs.

Donna Merkle played a collage of musicals from various areas of the Czech Republic on her cymbal/dulcimer from Brno, Moravia.

Terry Ross also provided beautiful music on her harp accompanied by Lee Edward Baca on drums and Louis Polansky on guitar playing several of the "old time" Czech songs with Cathy Chaloupka, Martha Dybala Lorene Nitschke and Irene Polansky singing.

The Fayette Czech dancers also danced several folk dances in their colorful Czech costumes.

A delicious Czech meal prepared and hosted by the Fayette County Chapter members consisting of pork roast, potatoes, sauerkraut, green beans and chicken noodle soup prepared by George Hranicky was served along with a smorgasbord of scrumptious desserts.

Guest Speaker Willie Kocurek, guest speaker, provided a most enlightening and delightful program on Czech ancestry siting the Kocurek family as an example and how the family prospered through hard work from daylight to dark managing their time to prosper because of family leadership and assistance for friends in times of need.

Cultural Center Houston joins in annual Lodge 88 Czech Day Czech

The Czech Cultural Center Houston participated in the Annual Czech Day celebration at SPJST Lodge 88 located in the Heights, Houston, Texas on Sunday, October 31, 1999.

Each year a special day is set aside to honor the Czech/Slovak people, their heritage, customs and cuisine.

The event was very well attended. The SPJST Lodge Orchestra provided the background for the Czech Heritage Singers and Dancers. The Cesky Folklorni Texasu Dancers were colorful and exciting with their cymbal ensemble providing the music. We were especially proud to have several members of the Czech Cultural Center Houston participate in both dance groups.

SPJST President Clara Broz and Vice President Marie Stayton graciously hosted and welcomed all the guests, members and friends to the annual Czech Day at Lodge 88. Helen Hegwood, longtime member of the Czech Cultural Center Houston and Lodge 88, began the program with her solo performance of the Star Bangled Banner followed by the Czech national anthem. The SPJST Singers provided a beautiful back-up for both anthems.

Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). Each of the young adults had the opportunity to address the festival guests and produced some very inspiring goals.

Czech Center Market Place The Czech Center Market Place was well represented with authentic Czech glass, jewelry, fine porcelain, handcrafted dolls from different Czech regions, Christmas ornaments, books for adults and children and lots of Czech/Slovak products.

SPJST State President Howard B. Leshikar gave a very inspirational message to the guests. He spoke of the pride of Czech people and great need for today's generation and generations to come to preserve and celebrate their heritage. We need to educate our young so that we will not be lost in the

future. The Czech people have endured many hardships and we need to be appreciative that they left us the ability to hold our heads high and be proud.

City Councilman, the esteemed Felix Fraga and Mrs. Fraga, honored guests, attended the event.

Councilman Fraga presented to the Czech people a proclamation from the Honorable Mayor Lee P. Brown establishing Czech Day in Houston. The proclamation will be posted at Lodge 88 for all to enjoy and take pride in.

Best in Baking A kolache baking contest was held and the winner for the best all around kolache was Mrs. Helen Kubicek, well known in the Czech community for her specialty.

Judges from many sectors of the Czech population voted for a Mr. and Mrs. Czech. Day. The votes were tallied and the winners announced. By a unanimous vote, Mr. Johnny and Mrs.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We the Resolution Committee of Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest condolences to the family of our departed lodge brother, EDGAR EBEN, 90, of Bellville, who died Sunday, November 21,1999 in Austin County.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 26 at 10 a.m. at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Welcome with Reverend Walter Schundette officiating. Burial was in the Welcome Lutheran Cemetery.

He was born March 30, 1909 in the community of Welcome to William and Emma (Juergens) Eben. He was raised in Welcome and attended the Lebanon School.

On August 31, 1933, Judge W.I. Hill joined Eben and the former Elsie Hohlt in marriage with ceremony in Bellville.

Edgar was a farmer and rancher, a member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church of Welcome, SPJST Lodge 201, and the Austin County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie Eben of Bellville; daughters and son in-laws, Gladys and Robert Luekemeyer of Bellville: Doris and Peter Kubicek of New Ulm; brother and sister in-law, Harry and Agnes Even of Welcome; sisters in-law, Alberta Schulz of Brenham, Elberta Hohlt of Columbus, Ligia Hohlt of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Knesek Family Funeral Chapel of Bellville was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral Services for Annie Schovajsa, 91, were held Saturday, November 27, 1999 at 10 a.m. from the Nelsonville Brethren Church with Reverend Michael Grosclose officiating. Annie Schovajsa died Tuesday, November 23, 1999 in Bellville.

Born February 14, 1908 in New Bremen, Annie was the daughter of Frank and Louise (Jancecek) Surovik.

Annie was raised in Nelsonville and attended the Nelsonville and Sank', Anna Public Schools.

On November 4, 1930, Mr. Willie D. Schovajsa and Miss Annie Surovik were married in Nelsonville Brethren

Church. She was a lifelong member of the Nelsonville Brethren Church, the Christina Sisters of the Church, SPJST Lodge 201 of Bleiblerville/Nelsonville and worked all her life as a homemaker.

She is survived by her son and daughter in-law, Billie Schovajsa and Danita of Bleiblerville; grandchildren, Candy and husband, Tim Janish of Bellville; Tara Schovajsa and Ginny Schovajsa of Bleiblerville; greatgrandchildren. Dustin, Jacob, Brandon and Ross Janish.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Louise Surovik; her husband, Willie D. Schovajsa; brothers, Joe, John, Willie and Frank Liska; and her sisters, Albina Bartay and Louisa Krause.

Born January 9, 1923 in Crosby, he was a life-long resident of Crosby and worked for Ashland Chemical Company for 21 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post 658.

The day he passed away, November 25, 1999, would have been his mother's 99th birthday.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Frank and Vera Stasney.

His surviving relatives are his wife, Dolores Stasney of Crosby; children, Carolyn and Allen Elliott of Crosby; Larry Stasney, Debbie and Buddy Wood, Craig and Cathy Stasney, Darlyne and Kenny Huseman, all of Crosby, and Michelle and Steve Sparks of Sugar Land; grandchildren, Lisa Colson, Lacey and Leah Stasney, Charles, Kelley. Learning Czech

Having a good selection of foreign language courses and advanced placement courses are particularly difficult in smaller schools, she said Before this year, Spanish was the only foreign language offered in Granger.

In Granger, the plan is to offer the following classes next year via distance learning: German, Spanish, American Sign Language, Czech, AP History and high school equivalency, or GED classes. Granger has also offered to host AP English and calculus.

The diversity of courses that dis tance-learning makes available also helps to introduce culture studies to schools that might not otherwise have that opportunity.

"It allows us to reach out to Czech communities across the state and revitalize the language," Mr. Polasek said In fact, Kevin said he wanted to take the class because of his own Czech roots. But until this year that wasn't an option for him.

Next semester, the Czech students will study culture and history, comparing the Czech-Texan heritage and tradition of Flatonia to those of Granger.

While "origination" sites have more gadgets and technology to make teaching easier, and cost about $7,000 more, recipient sites can still work both ways, Mr. Avant said, as evidenced by the Granger-Flatonia Czech class. Other regions across the state have used grants to pa) for the technology.

"In our case, we've chosen to designate local funds for our efforts in distance-learning," Mr. Avant said.

In addition to the nine schools that have it now, about 17 more are scheduled to receive it in the next year,Mr. Avant said.

Schools must fill out an application to be considered for the, pilot program.

The Granger-Flatonia class is the only daily instruction class currently going on in Region XIII, so watching it progress will be helpful to future classes, Mr. Avant said.

Cultural Connections Distance-learning is especially useful for smaller districts, Ms. Duke said, where class options are limited because of lack of teaching resources.

A new Czech textbook and Czech via the Internet Czech I is a textbook with standard Czech and Moravian dialect. The text is spiral hound with 67 pages of drill, grammar and vocabulary. The authors of the textbook are Brad Masek and Thadious Polasek. The authors' purpose was to design a textbook for distance learning via the Internet.

Brad Masek received a Czech ExStudents Association of Texas (CESAT) grant for research to write the text. The Catholic Union (KJT) graciously gave permission to quote Nase Definy for historic information that is included in the text. The authors are grateful to both CESAT and the KJT for their kind support.

The presentation of Czech grammar has been restructured changing the traditional approach to the study of verbs, singular and plural of nouns and adjectives and presenting Moravian v-•ocal--. 721ary. The present, past and future of the verbs are given simultaneously for rapid learning of the language. MoraVian vocabulary is presented €o yalidate the dialects Czech Texan students hear their parents and grandparents speak and to help preserve the Moravian dialect..

grants are presented in a bilingual format at the end of the text to honor our forefathers' brave efforts of settlements in Texas.

The text has been piloted in Czech I at Flatonia High School and conversational Czech at Blinn College in Schulenburg. The text is currently being used for Czech I at Flatonia High School and Granger High School via distance learning and at the conversational class• at Blinn College in Schulenburg.

Thanks to the Texas Infrastructure Fund (TIE), grants and the pilot project of Educational Service Center at Region X111 in •Austin, Czech I is being studied at. Flatonia High School. and Gran ger Hi gh School. The 'rid funds were used to connect both schools to the the Internet. Region XIII provided a pilot program and the hardware to do distance learning.

Czech was one of the subjects selected for the pilot project. Flatonia ISD and Granger ISD are grateful for the efforts of Bob Avant at Region XIII for the pilot project.

Lone Pay Life. A whole life prod uct available with just one premium. The certificate is then paid-up.

Issued to ages 0 through 70.

Adult and Juvenile Whole Life. A whole life product designed for both young and mature applicants that offers affordable premiums and builds cash value.

Adult and Juvenile 20-Payment Life. A whole life product designed for both young and mature applicants with premiums payable for

twenty years. Issued to ages 0 through 60.

Annual Renewable Term (ART).

A one year term product that automatically renews each year with applicable premiums. Issued to ages 16 through 65. Can be converted to permanent insurance prior to age 65. Term expires at age 70.

Term 4 Life Plan. Combines elements of both term and whole life insurance. The plan offers level lifetime coverage to age 99 and premiums which start at less than half of a guaranteed whole life premium.

Term to Age 65. Offers affordable term coverage with issue ages 16 through 44. Convertible to permanent insurance prior to age 65.

Protector Plan. Designed as a reducing term insurance plan on two lives over a 20-, 25-, or 30-year period. Pays off on the death of the first insured. Premiums are calculated on combination of two insureds ages. Can be used as a mortgage cancellation plan.

Fun and Games Both the youth and adults enjoyed an afternoon of bingo. Thanks to District Fraternal Activities Coordinator Linda Gaas and Assistant District Youth Counselor Holly Narro for picking out such good prizes. For the first time this year, the youth department held a live cake auction and a silent auction. All proceeds from the auction were given to the youth clubs that participated. Thanks to all the buyers at the auction and to Donnie Hejl who served as our auctioneer.

Thanks to President Leshikar and Districts One/Seven Field Representative Larry Wagner for attending our district function.

After the day's activities, all who stayed enjoyed a delicious hamburger super prepared by Lodge 17. A special thanks to District One and Lodge 17 President Randy Gaas for grilling the burgers. They were great!!

Dear Vestnik Readers, Our monthly meeting was held on December 5th. After the meeting we took toys to the M.A.S.H. (Make A Smile Happen) toy drive sponsored by local radio stations in Bryan/College Station. These toys will be distributed to those children who are less fortunate in hopes of making their Christmas a little brighter. After that, we had our Christmas Program and had a visit from Santa.

30, Taiton Youth Club joins in Lack's Trim-a-Tree food drive, contest Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, The Taiton Lodge 30, SPJST Youth Club are participating in the annual Lack's Trim-a-Tree Contest. The contest is a food drive for The Blessing Cup. Six organizations or clubs participate each year.

The trees are judged by the public by placing canned goods under the tree you think is the best decorated.

Members made two or more decorations each and then we decorated the tree on Sunday, November 21. The contest runs through December 21.

Lack's gives awards to the three top trees that collect the most canned Goods.

Our tree is the best! It has all handmade ornaments. All canned goods are appreciated.

The November meeting of Lodge 177 Youth Club was called to order at 2 p.m. by President Sara Wagner on Sunday, November 21. We had eight members and three adults present.

Congratulations to our youth club volleyball team: Kristin Bartek, Jennifer Clear, Courtney Wagner and Sara Wagner. These four ladies com peted against other youth clubs with six players and won the non-spiking youth division.

The District Two lock-in was held November 13-14. We had nine mem bers and four adult chaperones attend.

We were accepted as on of the participants in the Lack's Trim-a-Tree Contest. We decorated the tree on Tuesday, November 23. We delivered a craft to the pediatric patients at Scott and White on Thanksgiving Day at 3 p.m.

Members voted to go to a hockey game and go ice skating afterwards for the Christmas party. The date and time will be announced later.

After the meeting, youth members , made Christmas ornaments for the Lack's Christmas tree, worked on Vestnik projects and enjoyed snacks.

Special thanks to Jackie Beck fo bringing craft supplies.

Our next meeting is Sunday, December 12, 1999 at 2 p.m. We will be electing officers. After the meeting, we will be going to Temple for a scav enger hunt food drive. All food collected will go under our tree at Lack's

Czech classes offered at Austin Community College

Wharton County Junior College offers Czech class

The spring class schedule 2000 at Austin Community College will include Czech I and II language classes. All classes are $75 each.

Registration is held at the ACC Highland Business Center (HBC), 4th floor between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Wharton County Junior College is now enrolling students for Czech classes to be held at 550 Julie Rivers Drive Sugar Land, Texas.

The focus of this course is on developing basic communication skills and attaining knowledge in grammatical expression, vocabulary, conversation, social etiquette and culture of Czech and Moravian lands. The class is designed for those with very little or no Czech speaking skills. You will also be exposed to the diversified Czech culture.

Learning the Czech language can benefit those traveling to this beautiful country or those needing to do business in the new Czech republic. A textbook required.
