Because of your continued generousity, many young SPJST members will be able to attend or continue with college. We have a long way to reach our goal of $14,000 before March 31st. Guidelines For Giving 1. Donations made by lodges out of lodge funds, will be listed as a lodge donation.

2. Collected donations from a lodge meeting will be listed individually by lodge in alphabetical order.

Individuals submitting a donation will also be listed by lodge, alphabetically.

3. Gifts of $50 or more will appear in bold type in the Vestnik.

4. Families or groups which desire names, listed under a particular last name or group name should indicate this on the donation form or letter, otherwise, the names will be listed as individual donations by lodge in alphabetical order. Please print donor's names clearly.

High Hopes Fraternal life insurance and fraternalism are both rooted in, the principle that each of us has a responsibility to each other.

I was happy to inform you in the October 27 Vestnik editorial (Texas Will Lead the Way) that the Texas Fraternal Congress, at their statewide meeting in Houston on October 23, accepted and passed the recommendation contained in my fraternal section report to organize a statewide action team committed to exploring and reporting on the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead for Texas fraternals.

The important work of organizing this statewide action committee, I recently learned, will begin in February following the official designation of TFC committee chairmen by incoming TFC President Elo Goerig of the KJT. As proposed, the action team would be composed of experts and interested members from all levels of our fraternal system - individuals with the knowledge, expertise and most importantly, the heart - necessary to make a positive difference in the growth of lodges, the SPJST and our sister fraternals in the 21st Century.

I believe that if we are even moderately successful with this effort in Texas, we will set a new higher standard that will be replicated in state after state. There is much to gain by working with each other and with our sister fraternals in the world of regulatory, legislative and marketing issues.

There is a special blessing in working with fellow fraternalists to find opportunities in the :IL challenges that lay ahead. For whatever reasons, intrafraternal relationships are seldom cultivated at the lodge level. By working through and looking beyond the differences that have divided us - as lodges and as societies - we can achieve new heights - in terms of sales, service and fraternalism - in the 21st Century.

Why not expand our sights instead of restricting our lives and accepting the lowest common denominator of a dormant existence? Faith, either in God or in ourselves, will permit us to take a chance on a new path, perhaps different from the one we now follow. It may be surprising where it leads."

SPJST Member Services Directory I f you're a member and you've got a business - big or small get it listed in the Year 2000 SPJST Member Services Directory.

The Year 2000 Directory, which will be published in January, provides a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales representatives and free listings to members who are in a position to provide various products and services to other SPJST members.

In addition to these free listings, members will also have the opportunity to purchase additional advertising space as a way to further promote your business. The price for a standard business card size advertisement or "coupon," will be $25. Advertising revenues will help to defray the cost of printing.

Since the first SPJST Member Services Directory was published in 1995, it has consistently increased in size. In 1999, the directory included more than 600 business listings, ranging from accountants and auto mechanics to musicians, beauticians and physicians. Seasonal businesses and part-time businesses are all invited to participate in the directory.

Only those listings which are deemed "questionable" or those which promote life insurance or other products available through the SPJST, will not be printed in the directory.

SPJST MORTGAGE INTEREST RATES

Dear Members and Friends: Season's Greetings! The holidays are just around the corner, and we at the SPJST Home Office are getting ready. I invite you to capture the moments of the season at the Holiday Open House on Monday, December 6 at the SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main in Temple. The Open House follows the Temple Christmas Parade, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Holiday music by harpist Gretchen Williams, Christmas stories by Children's Librarian Theresa Faris of the Temple Public Library and horse-drawn carriage rides are planned. Visitors can share their Christmas wishes with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Sweet treats and warm beverages will be served.

I also invite you to visit the SPJST Home Office and Museum this holiday season. Beginning November 29, the SPJST Youth Christmas Tree will be displayed in the Home Office lobby. The tree will feature ornaments designed and created by SPJST Youth Club members from across Texas.

The SPJST Museum will display a Czech Christmas tree with traditional decorations. The tree will be located in the Museum's Pioneer Room, which features a replica of the first Czech home built in Texas.

Guided museum tours are also available during regular museum hours, or by special arrangement. The museum is open each weekday from 8 a.m. until noon and from I to 5 p.m. Admission is free of charge.

I look forward to seeing you at the Holiday Open House on Monday, December 6. Best wishes for a joyous holiday season.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge is accepting applications for the year 2000 SPJST Scholarships until December 31, 1999.

An applicant must be a qualified member of the SPJST to apply. To be a qualified member, the applicant must hold a valid SPJST insurance policy for at least one year prior to the date of the application.

Our next meeting will be held on December 5 at 2 p.m. which will be a Chinese Christmas. Bring a $7.50 generic gift if you wish to participate in gift-giving. 18, Elgin decorates hall for the holidays Lodge

Members of Lodge 18, Elgin each month look forward in honoring members on their birthdays and anniversaries. The month of November was a good month for Minnie Ries and Dud Morris as they have lived another year to enjoy their beautiful life. Doris and Edwin Arldt proved to all that you can live together for fifty years and act like newlyweds. They celebrated the great day on November 13 with all their friends at the lodge.

Lodge members enjoyed a dinner of sausage, deviled eggs, pickles, chips, fresh pecans, potatoes, sauerkraut and desserts.

President Andrew Greinert called the meeting at 7:30 p.m. with members joining him in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer for all deceased members and good health to all members.

Prayers were offered for Oscar Helgren and Alex Roehlke for a speedy recovery as they are on the sick list.

Roll call was answered by officers and committees with few absent for a reason.

The minutes for October meeting were read by Secretary Agnes Eschberger which were approved.

President Greinert told the members that Lodge 18 will host the District Two Spring meeting on March 19, 2000.

Members are asked to help decorate the lodge home for the upcoming holidays on December 8 starting at 9 a.m.

Due to the Christmas holidays the members will have their December regular meeting on December 14th. It will be a pot luck dinner at 6:30 so everyone is asked to bring a dish.

Lodge 20, Granger Christmas party set for December 5 Lodge 20, Granger's Christmas party will be held on Sunday, December 5, 1999 at 3 p.m. at the lodge hall in Granger. Our officers cordially invite the officers of the Supreme Lodge and the Editor of the Vestnik to our party.

Several members received their 50year pins this year. These members will be honored at our Christmas party.

We will have our annual 100 Pennies Drive for the SPJST Youth Scholarships that are given away each year.

A supper consisting of ham and sausage will be served. Meat will be furnished and each family is asked to bring two dishes, a salad, vegetable and/or dessert.

With a quorum present, election of officers was held. The same officers who served in 1999 were re-elected for the year 2000. Delegates elected to the year 2000 SPJST Convention were Glenn Kaminsky, A.J. "Tony" Kelner, Helen A. Kelner and Joseph D. Nezval.

It voted to donate money to the same organizations the lodge has always donated to every year. These being the East Bernard Volunteer Fire Department, the East Bernard E.M.S, Wharton-Matagorda Counties Child Protective Services and SPJST Nursing Home No. 2 in Needville. Two additional organizations were added this year which were the East Bernard Boy Scouts and the Czech Cultural Center in La Grange. Several other motions were made and passed to take care of lodge business.

Lodge 48, Beyersville sponsors fifth annual Pokorny-Polanka tarok tournament The Fifth Annual Pokorny-Polanka Tarok Tournament will be held on Saturday, December 4, 1999 at SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville, Texas.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and play begins at 9:00 a.m.

Registration fee is $15 per person and in-cludes the noon meal, snacks and prizes. There will be six rounds of play. We have decided to add a new twist to the tournament this year. Prizes will be awarded as usual to the top winners plus we will award ten cents a chip in increments of 10 chips. Thus, if you have a score of 769 at the end of the day, you would have 160 chips to the good times ten cents; which would give you $16.

Playing rules are to be the same as SPJST. Please pre-register by December 1 to help us estimate food supply; however, late entries are still welcome.

Lodge 63, Sweet Home meeting and Christmas party December 5 Lodge 63, Sweet Home will hold its monthly meeting and social at the Sweet Home Community Center on

, w Wednesday, December 1, 1999—VESTNIK/7 December 5th, 1999, beginning at 12 noon. A happy hour will be followed by a catered meal of roast beef and all the trimmings. Members are asked to bring the dessert. After the meal, a business meeting will be conducted.

Items on the agenda include committee reports, officer elections, committee appointments, election of convention delegates and a final vote on the merger with the Yoakum lodge.

Door prizes will be awarded and someone with a birthday in October, November or December will win a cake baked by Diane Ward. This will also be our Christmas party so if you wish to exchange gifts the price limit is $2.75 - $3.00 and categories will include the usual of men, women and children. Santa might be able to make it — depends on the weather.

66, Waco reports on recent and coming events Lodge

President George Pauling called the meeting to order on November 21 at 2 p.m. at Linden Hall, Elm Mott, Texas.

All officers were present except Sister Darlene Engelke who was in La Crosse, Wisconsin visiting her sister, Sister Joyce Bantle, who was in a serious car accident, but is doing much better now. There were 34 members present and one visitor, Norma Lemke.

The youth presented the flag and led the Pledge of Allegiance and motto.

Members stood for a moment of silent prayer for two of our deceased members, Minnie Narovec and W.E. Newman. May they rest in peace.

Secretary Dana McAdams read the minutes of the October17 meeting and the were approved as read.

President George Pauling read correspondence from the Supreme lodge regarding taxes. He also mentioned that Proposition 4 passed. He also received a flyer stating that there will be a parade in Temple on December 6 which begins at 6:30 p.m. SPJST will enter in the parade. A Holiday Open House at the Home Office will be after the parade from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

President Pauling also reminded members that the deadline for new membership into Lodge 66 is December 30. In reference to the convention, he reported that ads are being sold for the brochure for the convention and the money and design of the ad has to be in by February 15. The cost of a full page ad is $100; 1/2 page $60; 1/4 page $35; 1/8 page $20; well wishers ad $5.

Lodge 66 will purchase a full page ad.

Committee members in charge of drawing up the ad are Chairman Gladys Yates, Diana Engelke and Justin Engelke.

Chairman of the Board, Brother Johnny Gaidusek reported that the board met on November 3 at 7 p.m. He had Secretary of the Board, Sister Bonnie Pruitt, read the minutes of that meeting.

Christmas Meal Menu Chairman of the Entertainment Committee, Sister Dorothy Gerlich, reported that the committee met on November 3 with one member absent.

There was some brisket and potatoes left over from the arts and crafts show so today they are having barbecue on a bun, potato salad, pickles, salad and desserts. Tim and Mary Lou Urbanek donated 20 pounds of potatoes. The new commercial can opener was donated by Eugene and Dorothy Gerlich.

Eddie Ray is catering the Christmas party meal on December 19. The meal will consist of turkey and dressing, sausage, green beans, yams, cranberry sauce, tea and desserts consisting of apple, cherry and peach cobbler. The lodge will furnish coffee. Sister Gerlich also stated that donations for door prizes are needed. If you wish to donate a prize, you can identify the gift as for a man, woman or child.

President Pauling thanked Brother Jamie Yates for mowing the grass at Linden Hall before the Arts and Crafts Show. He also thanked everyone that helped at the show—for moving tables and chairs and then putting them back in their place after the show.

Baked Goods Appreciated Sister Emma Ceska thanked members for bringing desserts for the bake sale at the Arts and Crafts Show and she also thanked the youth for helping.

Sister Mary Alice Langlotz, Fraternal Activities Coordinator, thanked the McAdams family, John, Diana and Justin Engelke and George Pauling for attending the State Volleyball Tournament. Lodge 66 came in fourth place. She also reported that she took food for the November food drive at Baylor in the name of Lodge 66. She stated that the next game night will be on January 10. She wished everyone a happy Thanksgiving.

Lodge Bids to Host Tournaments President Pauling stated that if we want to sponsor any State Tournaments, we must apply by December 15. State Taroky Tournament is on February 19; State Straight Domino Tournament is on March 4; "42" Tournament is on March 18. The State Horseshoe Tournament is on May 13 and the State Volleyball Tournament is on November 18. Lodge 66 will bid on two of the tournaments. President Pauling also reminded members that the State Workshop and Incentive Banquet will be held in Ennis on February 26.

Chairman of the Cheer and Condolence Committee, Sister Emma Ceska, reported she sent sympathy cards to the family of W.E. Newman and to the Minnie Narovec family. She reported that a meal was prepared for the Narovec family since they were long time members of Lodge 66 and did a lot of work at the lodge.

Insurance Representative, Brother Milan Dujka, reported that Lodge 66 has sold 48 policies thus far. Brother Jerry Kucera signed up a new sales representative, Bill Alexander. Members voted to approve Mr. Alexander as a new sales representative.

Chairman of the Grievance Committee, Brother Bennie Engelke reported no grievances.

Sister Libbie Parma gave the Trust Fund report and she thanked members for their donations to the fund.

Bookkeeper Eugene Gerlich gave the Bookkeeper's report. We are very happy that Gene is doing so well.

Arts, Crafts Show Report Special Projects Manager, Brother Michael Galler thanked everyone for the help they gave before, during and after the Arts and Crafts Show. He said he thought it was a success. A discussion was held whether to have a spring Arts and Crafts Show or another in the

fall. It was decided that we would discuss this at our next meeting.

Due to the absence of Sister Darlene, Engelke, Brother John Engelke read the names of candidates for membership.

Milan Dujka wrote up Sara Rose Dujka. Jerry Kucera wrote up Roger Easter, II. Transferred to Lodge 54 was John E. Kasik, Jr. Brother John Engelke also read Resolutions of Sympathy on Sister Minnie Narovec and W.E. Newman. Brother John also gave a rundown of the District Three meeting which was held in Burleson in October. The District Three Spring Meeting date has been changed to April 30, 2000 at Lodge 66. He also reported that at the convention on June 12, 13, 14, 2000, there will be 317 delegates from over the state of Texas. District Three will have 65 delegates. Lodge 66 will have 13 delegates and three alternates.

President Pauling reported to the members that Brother John Engelke is the newly elected president for District Three. He also had a short discussion about having a fun day. More will be discussed at another time.

Youth Club Report Youth Leader, Sister Diana Engelke, reported that were 16 youth, eight adults and two visitors, Kim Cullinton and John Pantalici, present at today's meeting. The youth will be meeting for two evenings this week to make place cards for the tables of officers and committee members for the for the Christmas party. She also reported that several youth were winners of the Christmas Ornament Contest for different age groups: Mykala Yates-first place; Dakota Yates-first place; Tanner Guidroz-third place; Douglas Gallerthird place; Kevin Galler-first place; Jodie McAdams-second place; Candice McAdams-second place; Justin Engelke-third place. Sister Diana also reported that the youth are to work on a new youth motto and enter a tee-shirt design. On December 1 at 5:15 p.m., the youth will go Christmas caroling to the Meadowlands Assisted Living Facility where Sister Gladys Yates is employed. She also reminded everyone of the Temple Christmas parade on December 1. She reported that the youth will furnish some door prizes for the Christmas party. They will also make treat bags. On December 21 at 5:45, they will meet at the Hillcrest Clinic and go caroling to the Cottage of Oak Springs at 6 p.m. then they will come back to the lodge for their Christmas party. Sister Diana also reminded everyone that the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive is going on. Any monetary donations will be greatly appreciated. On December 21, the youth will bring items for the Ronald McDonald House.

Youth Club Election Results Sister Diana Engelke reported that the Youth Club had their elections for officers today. Holiday Decorating December 13 A discussion was held on decorating for the Christmas party and a regular hall clean up. It was decided to decorate and clean up the hall on Monday, December 13 at 6 p.m. Members arz asked to bring snacks. We need as many members to come out and help with the decorating and clean up.

Dorothy Veselka will set up her Christmas tree for the party on December 19. President Pauling also reminded everyone that for the New Year's Eve dance, Josie and the Boys will furnish the music. Come out and enjoy yourselves.

Youth Christmas Party December 7th is the Christmas party for the youth. The lodge orchestra will play for this event.

December 12th will be our lodge yearly meeting with election of 41 delegates to the convention in Temple in June 2000.

December 19th is the Blue Room Christmas Party, with dinner and a dance. The price is $15 per person with the Central Texas Sounds playing for our dancing entertainment. Make your reservations to attend.

HJR-4, the amendment to the Texas Constitution which provides for ad valorem tax exemptions for some community service groups, was passed by Texas voters on November 2. We appreciate all those who voted for it.

Some SPJST lodges may be able to benefit from this.

Jerry Ermis' brother, George W. Ermis, passed away on November 2nd, and was buried on November 6th at Schulenberg, Texas.

Lillie Spies is doing quite well after her hip surgery; Mary Krippner is better after her automobile accident; Josephine Koeppen is at home after back surgery; Bill Konjura is at home and Jerry Ermis is having trouble with his back and is being treated as an outpatient for this. We will remember to keep these members in our prayers.

Earline Hoffman just returned from Kauai, Hawaii. She went with her son, Quentin Hoffman, and his wife, Patricia and daughter, Barbara Atkins and her husband, Mike Atkins. They visitited the fern grotto, had brunch at Princeville Hotel, saw the beautiful canyon, light houses, went to a luau, ate lots of delicious food — even poi, which isn't so good. Anyway, they had a wonderful time.

Turkeys will be given away at the Thursday night bingo games, December 18th. The Bingo Committee is sponsoring this.

President Clara Broz opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m. and the VFW Ceremonial Detail presented the colors and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

A Tribute to Our Veterans

Lodge 88, Houston honored all veterans at their monthly meeting on Monday, November 8. The V.F.W. Color Guard posted the colors. Lodge 88, Houston salutes everyone who has served our great nation in this century.

At this time, First Vice President, Marie Stayton presented the Veterans Day program, fionoring all who served in the armed forces. At the conclusion of the program, President Broz presented the VFW with a donation of $500.

Report of Officers President Broz read the results of Czech Day and thanked everyone for their help. She also reported that on December 12, the monthly meeting will begin at 10 a.m, followed by the annual meeting where we will elect officers, entertainment chairperson, social night chairperson and Board of Trustees. The latter part of meeting will be for election of 41 delegates and 10 alternates. A calendar meeting is set for November 16, 1999 to post dates for year 2000.

First Vice President Marie Stayton reported that she will call for volunteers to carry the flags at the December meeting. She then recognized Clara and Johnny Broz as being chosen Mr. and Mrs. Czech Day. Secretary-Treasurer Roberta Johnson read the Consolidated Income Statement for September.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Larry Pflughaupt reported on the Czech film festival scheduled for Monday nights at Lodge 88. He also noted that tarok is played on Monday nights.

Larry then reviewed the various Czech society activities around the state.

Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales reported that the Halloween party was a big success and enjoyed by all in attendance. The Youth Club sold ice cream, Christmas ornaments and garage sale items at Czech Day for a total of $268.75. The Christmas Party is set for December 7, 1999 at 7p.m..

Sergeant-at : Arms Johnny Broz thanked all who helped in the kitchen on Czech Day. He then read a poem.

Committee Reports Entertainment Committee - Betty Theiss introduced Shirley O'Brien as a new committee member. She then spoke on the past dances and reviewed the current dance schedule and invited everyone to come out on Saturday nights.

Board of Trustees - Guenter Merkle reported the approved expenditures for the Youth Christmas • party, the New Year's Eve dance favors and

turkeys to be given away at bingo.

Also permission given to the Little League to use property across from lodge while their field is under construction. They will pay rental fee, which will be donated back later.

Kitchen - Guenter Merkle - thanked all who helped in the kitchen as food servers at Czech Day. Blueroom - Carol Liebscher reported reservations for the Blue Room Party are being taken and must be paid by December 10..

Social Night Chairman A.J. Stayton reported that turkeys will be given away at bingo Thursday November 18, 1999 and we need more players.

Men's Club - A.J. Stayton reported that the clean-up will be on the third Thursday, November 18.

Birthday Club Sisters - Kathy Trefell thanked all who helped with the pastry on Czech Day and reported that the Christmas lunch would be Wednesday, December 1. Next year the Birthday Club will meet only on the second Wednesday of the month.

Also, the Birthday Club donated $100 to Meals on Wheels.

Scholarship Committee - Josephine Pflughaupt reported that applications must be in by December 31, 1999.

Rules and Regulations - Gene Barcak, Margaret Albritton, A.J. Fabrygel and Rosalie Lobprises present two proposed changes, which will be voted on at the December meeting.

Choral Club - Gene Barcak - reported the next performance will be at the Christmas Party, December 7, 1999.

Benevolence Reporter - Dorothy Pflughaupt commented on the good job everyone is doing in fill out the forms but .asked to please identify all reports.

District Five Director Louis Hanus reported the current interest rates for loans and reviewed Lodge 88's standings in the award contest. He encouraged everyone to continue working toward a higher goal.

District Five First Vice-President Fred Buri reported on a FAC Workshop being held Sunday, November 21 at Lodge 88. State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz will conduct the workshop.

District Five Field Rep resentative Jim Weist complimented Marie Stayton on the outstanding Veterans Day tribute presented at the meeting.

He also held offices at the district level and Josephine Hierholzer. Brother Luis Pustejovsky said that after 39 years as secretary of Lodge 93, it is time to elect another secretary.

We are saddened by the deaths of Louis Kubala and Mary Ann Koci Palachek. Both were great fraternalists. Mary Ann was active in the SPJST as well as other organizations over the years. I will remember Louis as an avid fisherman and taroky player.

His yearly shelling of pecans for his family and friends was always a special touch that he did for a lot of us.

Also, we just learned of the death of Ann Leshikar's sister in-law.

Robert told everyone about the District Five Fraternal Workshop at Lodge 88, Sunday November 21.

First Vice President Lillia Mae Peter asked everyone to turn in the fraternal activities reports to her as soon as they can.

Robert wished everyone with a birthday in December a happy birthday.

President Mayfield stated that it was time for the remuneration committee to be nominated. The three nominated from the floor are Alvin Sefcik, John Valusek and Jimmy Weidig.

Julius Zella read the first reading of the reading of the by-laws and the suggested changes.

Robert told everyone that in the minutes it mentioned that two turkeys are being donated and prepared for the lodge's Christmas dinner this year. A suggestion was made that we also have two hams to go along with the turkeys.

One ham is being donated by Louis.'

Hanus and the lodge will buy the other ham. The dressing for the turkey is being prepared by a couple of members. The members are asked to bring a covered dish, salad or dessert.

When Sister Albina Surovik, celebrated her 100th birthday on October 22, 1999, it was an opportunity for family to gather and express their love.

Members of the six-generation SPJST family include several members of SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor. Pictured above, with Sister Surovik, are Clarence and Annie Daniels, Clara Seay-Goldfarb, Danny Seay and Rachel, Amanda Seay and Derek Laurel, Terrie Seay Zarate, Alyssa Zarate and Zoe Seay, the youngest family member, who was born on July 11, 1999. $15 before New Year's Eve and $20 at the door. Set-ups of Coke and Sprite and ice will be free for this dance only.

There will be cornbread and blackeyed peas at midnight. Workers will have snacks and a pot of chili.

College Station Christmas party set for December 12 Bryan-College Station will hold its next meeting and Christmas party on Sunday, December 12, 1999 at the Brazos Center, Bryan, Texas.

Registration and fellowship will start at 12:15 p.m. with a catered meal served at 12:45 p.m. Desserts are to be furnished by the membership.

There will be a children's program.

Each child is asked to bring a new small gift to be exchanged at the Christmas tree. Santa Claus helpers will also be giving out goodie bags to each child.

Again this year, we will be collecting non-perishable food items to be donated to the Still Creek Ranch. We ask everyone's support for this fraternal project by bringing as much food as you care to give. Last year we collected over 200 pounds of food which was greatly appreciated by the boys and girls at Still Creek Ranch. Our goal for this year is to exceed last year's amount.

There will be the installation of year 2000 officers at this meeting.

Many Vestnik readers remember the parents of Emilly, the late Rudolf and Andulka Troubil, from their participation in Sokol and SPJST activitites. Rudolf served as President of Sokol Corpus Christi and upon moving to Taylor, as administrator of the SPJST Nursing Home until his death at an SPJST Convention in Dallas in 1968.

Sewing Circle Presents Scenes from November Meeting Ennis

Sister Stella Tobola donated the bottom material for the quilt and Sister Dorothy Prachyl donated the batting for the quilt. Sister Liddie Pavelka furnished the Thanksgiving napkins. A quilt was quilted for the Circle. The quilt will be given away at our Christmas meeting. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Only members can participate. Sister Eleanora Pelzel furnished the door prize. Sister Lucy Honza was the lucky winner.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to the November birthday celebrants. Sisters Dorothy Prachyl, Emilie Harrison and Eleanora Pelzel will purchase Christmas gifts and take them to our sisters who reside in a nursing home. It was brought up that we consider spending our money for more organizations.

Perhaps this will be brought up and discussed at our December meeting.

We were honored to have Brian Vanicek, Editor of the Vestnik, visit our Circle and speak to us. Brian brought a beautiful picture of the American soldiers raising the American flag at Iwo Jima, World War II. Brian brought several tapes and gave them to our Circle.

A drawing was held for the tapes.

Several members were lucky winners.

It was so nice for Brian to do this. We thank him for the tapes and the delicious kolaches.

Jerry and Vickie Kohn attended an Army reunion of the 2nd Signal Battalion Corps in Sibley, Iowa. As they drove through Iowa, farmers were harvesting corn and soy beans, but it started raining and snowed about four inches. It did not stick to streets or sidewalks They enjoyed visiting with all the Army buddies and their wives.

They drove to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to see the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library which was very nice.

Our next meeting will be December '9, 1999. Gifts will be exchanged.

Dear Readers, The November meeting was well attended. Before the meeting, the Youth Club members stuffed candy and fruit in paper sacks that were handed out to everyone for Thanksgiving.

We discussed having a lock-in at the SPJST Hall. We settled on having it November 12-13 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Also, we discussed our upcoming Christmas program that will take place at the hall.

Later, Candice Macik showed us a video of last summer's Youth Achievement Day individual and group talents and the meeting was adjourned. Our next meeting will be on December 1, 1999.

17, New Tabor youth leader re-caps activities, projects Lodge

Dear Readers, I always feel that the busiest time of the year is summer, but the fall does not get any less hectic.

The youth members of Lodge 17, New Tabor have been very busy this fall. On September 11, we participated in the 1999 Kolache Festival held

annually in Caldwell. The youth, along with the traveling SPJST Museum set up camp at the old Vychopen Store on the square in Caldwell. The youth club members sold SPJST Cookbooks, SPJST koozies and buttons that said "I am a Red Hot Czech."

The very next day, the youth club held its annual awards and appreciation banquet. Thanks to Melanie Zavodny, State Youth Director, for attending. At the banquet, perfect attendance awards were presented and special recognition was given to our graduating seniors.

Our banquet was held on September 12 which is also grandparents Day. Each youth presented their grandparents with a Scoop of Love picture we had made at our September meeting. They also presented their grandparents with a certificate for being an outstanding grandparent. A delicious barbecue meal was served by Dave and Jerry's Catering.

In October, we held our regular monthly meeting, participated in District One Fall Fun Day (see related article) and participated in the National Make a Difference Day on Saturday October 23, 1999. We also had a Halloween party and hayride. (That is another letter.) The youth club's Make a Difference Project was to beautify the New Tabor Cemetery in preparation for the dedication of a Texas State Historical Marker which was purchased by Lodge 17. The youth club was fortunate to receive the $1.000 grant provided by the Caldwell WalMart store. This money will be used to purchase flowers for all the unattended graves. The flowers will be placed on the grave sites prior to the dedication of the historical marker. The youth club members spent several hours straightening grave markers, pulling weeds, arranging flowers on the graves and picking up trash around the cemetery. After our clean-up, we all ate a delicious cake donated by Jacob Hejl.

Thank you, Jacob, for the cake. The youth all learned a little Czech history by cleaning up the cemetery and some even learned a little bit of family history. Thanks to all that came to help with the clean-up.

88, Houston youth club sells ice cream, ornaments at Czech Day Lodge

Dear Readers, On Sunday, October 31, Lodge 88 had Czech Day. The Youth Club made homemade ice cream on Saturday, October 30th to sell on Czech Day. Once again, we sold out of ice cream.

Some of the youth members made Christmas ornaments that were sold at Czech Day. We also had a small garage sale.

Our District king, queen, duke and duchess participated in the grand march along with several other youth members. Everyone and a good time.

Remember to come work in the kitchen on Thursday nights. We really need the help.

Junior College offers Czech class Wharton County Junior College is now enrolling students for Czech

classes to be held at 550 Julie Rivers Drive Sugar Land, Texas.

The focus of this course is on developing basic communication skills and attaining knowledge in grammatical expression, vocabulary, conversation, social etiquette and culture of Czech and Moravian lands.

The class is designed for those with very little or no Czech speaking skills. You will also be exposed to the diversified Czech culture.
