We Can Make a Positive Difference It Pays to Ask Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has -Margaret Mead This Saturday, October 23, is Make a Difference Day, a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA WEEKEND magazine, Make a Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.

Several of our SPJST lodges have indicated that they will be participating in Make a Difference Day projects .. .

Those that are engaging in a project are encouraged to take photos and share them with the Vestnik for a special "Make a Difference Day" issue near Thanksgiving.

The efforts of all lodges and/or youth clubs actively involved in this year's Make a Difference Day effort will receive an SPJST clock, in appreciation for the time they are giving: Please contact the Editor's Office for details.

While service provides its own reward, participatin a in the National Make a Difference t7'Day could mean cash dollars for your lodge or youth club. As previously noted in the Vestnik, managers of Wal-Mart's more than 2,300 stores each have $1,000 in grants to help fund local Make a Difference Day projects. Before going to press, we learned that the Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club received a $1000 cash grant to apply toward their Make a Difference Day project.

Congratulations, gang! And a tip of the hat to Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Leader Susan Skrabanek, who made the application on behalf of the club.

According to Sister Skrabanek, the Youth Club will be channeling their efforts to beautifying the New Tabor Cemetery in preparation for the presentation of a state historical marker.

Anyone wishing to help with the project can do so by coming out to the cemetery, which is located on FM 166, on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. For more information, please contact Sister Skrabanek at (409) 272-3440.

Perspectives One day a father and his rich family took his young son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose to show him how poor people can be. They spent a day and a night in the farm of a very poor family.

When they got back from their trip the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

Very good, Dad!" "Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked.

"Yeah!""And what did you learn?"

The son answered, "I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four.

We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden, they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lamps in the garden, they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front yard, they have a whole horizon.

When the little boy was finished, his father was speechless.

His son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are!" Isn't it true that it all depends on the way you look at things? If you have love, friends, family, health, good humor and a poSitive attitude toward life, you've got everything!

You can't buy any of these things.

You can have all the material possessions you can imagine, provisions for the future, etc., but if you are poor of spirit, you have nothing!

SPSJT Lodge 206, Tri-County will host "The Power and the Promise" membership rally on Tuesday, October 26 at the Mexia Civic Center, located at 101 South McKinney in Mexia.

District Four co-hosting Czech Fest October 30 in Wall Men, women, boys and girls — everybody is invited to attend the SPJST District Four Czech Heritage Celebration set for October 30 at St. Ambrose Hall in Wall, Texas. The event is being hosted by SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo, RVOS District Five and the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society. The celebration is being held in conjunction with Czech Heritage Week in Texas.

Admission is free. Registration starts at 1 p.m. for the event which will include music by the Batla-Havlak Polka Time Band from 2 until 6 p.m.

Supper will be served at 5 p.m. Setups are available and BYOB. Watch your Vestnik for more details.

Lodge 161, La ParitaJourdanton hosts District Seven Fall meeting La Parita-Jourdanton Lodge 161 is excited about hosting the fall meeting and family fun day on November 7, at a fabulous location, Longhorn Museum in Pleasanton. Everyone is invited to come and view the large display of ani mals from Africa and many other interesting exhibits. Bring cameras.

Longhorn Museum is located approximately two and one half miles west of Interstate 37 and Highway 97 (Pleasanton exit). Look for the museum and yellow caboose on the north side of Highway 97 at the edge of Pleasanton.

The youth will have their annual Christmas Ornament Contest. Others may enter the Kolache and Needlework contests. Contest rules follow.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Lodge 20, Granger recognizes 50-year celebrates Czech members Day October 23 Lodge 17, New Tabor SPJST held a reception after their May monthly meeting to honor those members receiving their 50-year membership pins.

The occasion was well attended.

Those attending and receiving their pins were Sharon Skrabanek Chapman, Gladys Masar Hejl, Beatrice Zavodny Landolt, Willie Mazach, Dorothy Vavra Ondrasek and family members of Albina Matcek Surovik. Mrs. Surovik, who will be 100 years old on October 22 is in the nursing home, was not able to attend. Others receiving their 50-year pins who were not in attendance were Kenneth Paul and Joseph Machat.

Each year the officers and members of Lodge 17, New Tabor honor their 50-year members with a cake and punch reception after their May meeting. The door prize was a yellow potted plant that was won by Gladys Hejl.

The lodge would like to thank all those who made this event a memorable one.

Guest speaker will be Terry Loessin who has traveled to the Czech Republic and has compiled history data on the changes that have occurred.

He will also have a slide presentation of the pictures he had taken during his visit to the Czech Republic. Terry is the son of Leslie and Ruby Loessin and is a member of SPJST Lodge 20.

We will also have a display of Czech artifacts, pictures and crystal dishes plus much more. Also, we will be playing different types of Czech music from classic to folk. We are asking anyone that would be willing to share their pictures, artifacts, crystal dishes, music, etc. to bring them and to give a brief history as to how they arrived here from Czechoslovakia with your families. Lodge 18, Elgin Member Takes Top Honors

Kolache baker and "full-blooded Czech" Linda Pekar of Lodge 18, Elgin won four blue ribbons and the Grand Champion trophy at the 15th Annual Caldwell Kolache Festival Baking Contest on September 11. In addition to her ribbons and trophy, Ms. Pekar was awarded a $100 cash prize from the festival and $200 cash prize from the sponsoring company, Pioneer. A Bartlett High School graduate, Ms. Pekar of Taylor has been entering the contest since 1993 — but 1999 was her year Approximately 100 contestants competed in the multi-category competition. Ms. Pekar's entries included entries in the apple, apricot, prune, pineapple and special honeybaked ham and cheese kolaches categories. Congratulations to Linda on earning the Caldwell Kolache Festival's "Best in the State" distinction.

The SPJST Supreme Lodge is looking into establishing a weekend retreat for chronically ill children of SPJST members, etc. Everyone was of the consensus that this was a very positive project and beneficial to our members.

We are looking toward the Incentive Program of the Supreme Lodge and we now have six new members and possibly will have three or four more by the end of the month.

We wish to welcome Irene Santiago to Lodge 20, Granger and all our new members. Remember, our meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. unless there is conflict.

Please note the following guidelines: King v/s XX or XIX • When calling for a partner, a King is called instead of the XX or the XIX. • Calling the holder of a King as your partner tends to decrease powerful playing hands as the XX or XIX may provide the missing trumps when the caller has a good hand which could be the case having advantage of the Talon.

• The main difference in this game concerns the called King. Should the King be lost during play, each partner will lose two chips; if lost on the final play, four chips. Should the King be made on the final play, two chips are earned, if announced, four chips are earned, if announced and lost on the final play, six chips are lost. This does not affect the Pagat. Thus, the King and the Pagat may be announced and challenged by Contra etc.

Prever • Prever is played the usual way with these changes: A Prever loss after taking the second set of cards in the Talon or the third does not double, double your loss. You pay two chips for the second set and four chips for going back to the first set. A Prever loss after a No-Trick bid results in a two chip penalty.

No Trick • The introduction of No Trick expands the game by giving the player with a weak hand a chance to play.

• No Trick is a call that is higher than a call for a partner, but lower than a Preve call. Making a No Trick hand will earn you sixteen chips; a loss will cost you sixteen chips.

invites friends and families to attend Czech Heritage Day Dear Members and Friends, Lodge 24 invites you to observe Czech Heritage Day at Flag Hall in Cyclone on October 30, 1999. Doors open at 3 p.m. for the celebration which will include an SPJST Museum display and polka mass at 5:30 p.m. with music by the Vrazels' Polka Band. Mass celebrant will be Rev. Walt& Matus, with Deacon Bill Smetana assisting. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Color Guard will also participate in the service. Men, women and boys and girls of all ages and denominations are invited to enjoy the presentation.

The Praha Brothers Polka Band will play for you from 3:30 until 5 p.m.

Sausage plates and hamburgers will be for sale. For your listening and dancing pleasure, the Vrazels' will be playing from 7 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.

Drawing for door prizes will be at 9 p.m. Tickets for the evening dance will be sold after the polka mass for $5 per person. Youngsters, age 13 and under, will be admitted free.

Lodge 29, Taylor welcomes new members SPJST Lodge 29 held its monthly meeting on Sunday, October 10 at 4 p.m. with President Ronnie Rieger presiding. The members stood in silent respect for our deceased members Roland Sefcik, Olga Schiller, Edmond Raesz and Millie Dobias, Cathy Basil read the minutes and also the correspondence from Rosalie K. Orrick one of our 50-year members. Loretta Tate gave the treasurer's report.

Donna Pasemann read the correspondence. She told us we will have 1,520 votes at the 28th Convention on June 12 - 14, 2000 with 15 delegates and 10 alternates. Albin Machu has reserved ved 15 rooms for our lodge.

October 30 is the Tarok Tournament at out lodge. We need help with the meal. Also, on October 31, we have a spaghetti dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. which we will also need help with.

New members in the lodge are Clement Strmiska, Bill Milburn, Sandra, Milburn, Evelyn Schwarz.

We honored our 50-year members.

The ones present to accept their pins and plaques were Frank Chovanec and Irene Hamann.

The tickets wilt be $5 per person and those age 14 and under are free. The Majek's will play your favorite waltz, polka and country music and you will also have a chance to win something good. Lodge 48, Beyersville hosts Progressive "42" tournament October 23 SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will host a Progressive "42" Tournament on Saturday, October 23, 1999.

Registration fee is $10 and includes the noon meal, snacks and prizes.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and playing at 9:15 a.m. Fifteen games will be played with a time limit of 20 minutes per game. The tournament should end around 4:30 p.m.

We especially invite SPJST members but anyone is welcome. You do not need a partner as all players will draw numbers and be seated accordingly for the first round. The two winners will move to the next table and split up and play with the losers who remain at that table. There will be no head table, thus all winners will move.

54, West posts notice of requested merger Lodge

Per Article 76 of the SPJST ByLaws, a notice is given to the membership of Lodge Jaromir, 54, West, that a request is being made to the Supreme Lodge to consider our consolidation with Lodge 36, West.

Our annual meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on November 5 at Lone Star Hall.

Members should make every effort to attend this meeting as this merger will come up for vote.

Should this merger be approved, a request is made to drop Jaromir from the name of this lodge and request consideration to have the lodge named, Lodge 54, West.

President Wilburn Willis opened the third quarterly meeting of Lodge 54 on September 10 with a welcome to all in attendance. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and we remained standing for a few moments of silence in remembrance of all previously deceased members. There were no deceased members since our last meeting.

Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the June 4 meeting. These were approved as read. She also read the following items of correspondence: a letter from the American Czech

Culture Society regarding Czech Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas on October 17, 1999, a letter from Jan Vaculik, editor of the Hospodar, including flyers regarding subscriptions to the Hospodar, a letter from Supreme Lodge listing requirements and amounts of the incentive program and a flyer from Lodge 92, Fort Worth regarding Czech Heritage Day held September 18.

New Members Welcomed Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave the following report: New youth members are Kristopher C Barton, Elizabeth Ann Clark and Cordell L. Clark, signed up by Sales Representative Wilburn Willis.

Mikayla Nicole Kaluza, signed up by Sales Rep Freddie Kaluza. New adult members include Joe A. Polansky signed up by Freddie Kaluza and Beverly E. Clark and Roger L. Clark, signed up by Wilburn Willis. We are very happy to have these new members in our lodge and we thank these sales reps for their dedication.

Martha Prasifka took out an annuity which was transacted by Jerry Kucera, FIC. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Maxine Sefcik gave the following report: A total of 1,618 acts and 4,727 hours of fraternal service were performed by 23 Lodge 54 members in the six-month period of January 1 through June 30. Our many thanks to everyone for their efforts.

Robyn Podsednik, daughter of Larry and Kathy Podsednik of West, has accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars at the University of Texas at Austin. Her sister, Rebecca Podsednik, was crowned Miss West at the West Chamber of Commerce Banquet held July 23.

Tanner Holecek, son of Tommy and Peggy Holecek of West was named District 8-AAA's Most Valuable Defensive Player. He was a first team All-State selection to both Texas Sportswriters and Texas High School Coaches' Association teams this season. He was first team Super Centex selection and also was chosen to the tournament's Junior College on a baseball scholarship. We are very

proud of Tanner who helped the West Trojan Baseball team win the 1999 State Baseball Championship.

Our heartiest congratulations to Robyn, Rebecca and Tanner for their outstanding achievements and we wish them continued success.

Belated congratulations are in order for the following couples who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries, namely, Robert and Mary Shebesta, Richard and Annie Hlavenka and Raymond and Lill Matus. Most are members of Lodge 54.

The Gift of Life Recognition and appreciation is hereby given to the following Lodge 54 members who donated blood through the efforts of the West Kiwanis Club in July—Mary Brem, Patti James, Janice Kaluza, Marcella Klaus, Kevin Maler, Milada Mazanec, Edwin Nors, Jan and Marcela Vaculik and Joe Zahirniak. In August, donors were Freddie and Janice Kaluza, Milada Mazanec, Edwin Nors and Jan and Marcela Vaculik. Jeanette Colley assisted in July and August and Rebecca Podsednik assisted Jeanette in August.

FAC Maxine Sefcik reminded everyone to keep track of their voluntary service and turn it in to her before the end of the year.

Vice President Greg Nors distributed copies of the Treasurer's report and read it in Treasurer Freddie Kaluza's absence. This report was accepted as read.

Discussion was held regarding a fried chicken fund raiser to be held in 2000. A prize drawing and silent auctionwill be held in conjunction with the dinner. There will be more information on this in the future.

Members were asked to volunteer their time and help with the Sokol fund raiser that will be held on November 14.

The meeting was adjourned.

Proclamation Whereas, The month of October typically brings many festivals throughout the state of Texas to celebrate and honor the heritage of this state's Czech descendants; and because in the primary period of migration from Czechoslovakia, over a quarter of a million people of Czech ancestry arrived in Texas to make this place their home, gravitating to the rich soil of the black lands and upper coastal plains belt; and Whereas, Since that time, the number and stature of Czech descendants living in Texas has grown tremendously; and because there are now well over one million people living in all areas of the state and walks of life who can claim Czech heritage; and because they are known for their exemplary work ethics and love of democracy and have established standards of excellence to whom all can aspire; and Whereas, Texans of Czech ancestry take great pride in sharing with the rest of the state their contributions in the areas of art, music, literature, food, folklore, and many other fine customs that are a part of Texas' rich, diverse culture; and because this pride is displayed annually in the month of October by Czech Heritage Societies throughout the state as they stage various festivals, some of which have been passed down from generation to generation.

Now, therefore, pursuant to the powers vested in me as Mayor of the City of Corpus Christi, 1 do hereby proclaim October 1999, as

Czech Heritage Month In Corpus Christi Texas, and encourage all citizens to recognize the contributions made by Czech settlers and descendants to South Texas communities and to the State of Texas.

88, Houston annual Czech Day celebration October 31 Lodge

The Mayor of the City of Houston, Lee Brown, has proclaimed October 31st as Czech Heritage Day at Lodge 88 and therefore, we are planning an

entertaining day for you.

Starting the day at 11 a.m. with our famous roast pork and sausage dinner and all the trimmings. You may purchase an adult dinner for $5 and children under 12, for $3. To complete your dinner, the Birthday Club Sisters' pastries will be available.

Entertainment in the ballroom will begin at 11:30 with performance by the Lodge Choral Club, Lodge Concert Orchestra and the Heritage Singers and Folk Dancers. An afternoon program is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Please wear your Czech Costume, as we will have the judging of Mr. and Mrs. Czech Day and you must wear your costume to be considered.

You wonderful cooks, bake up your favorite kolaches and enter them in the kolache contest. To enter, you must bring two dozen home baked kolaches to the lodge by 11:30 a.m.—four kolaches on a plate for the judges and the rest to the Birthday Club pastry booth. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners.

Booths and food will be available in the ballroom after 3 p.m. A live auction of items donated by local merchants will be held at 2 p.m. At 3 p.m., Pat Veit will provide the music for your enjoyment.

Lodge 88, Houston, is now accepting applications for scholarships for the 2000 school year. These forms can be picked up at the lodge office at 1435 Beall Street, Houston, Texas, 77008 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday and returned to the Lodge 88 office by December 31, 1999.

To qualify, a student must be a member of Lodge 88 for a period of at least two years. The student must be paying local lodge dues and has to apply during the first semester of his senior year in high school with definite plans to enter college in the fall of the year 2000.

The meeting was called to order by President Kathy Trefell. We had 22 members present.

Mary Kosut, Sunshine Chairman, gave her report. Mary thanked Bessie Dewer for sending birthday cards and get well cards for her while she was out. This month, Mary sent birthday cards to Edna Wehring, Josephine Pumilia, Era Richards, Julie Kinnoman and Ellen Miculka. She sent get well cards to Margaret Spahr, Evelyn Mikolas, Flo Orsag, Johnny Kosut, Ellen Miculka, Karl Lindemann, Calvin Orsag, Jerry Ermis, Mike Trefell and Alice Motal.

Bessie Dewer sent Mary Kosut a get well card.

Margaret Spahr has had hip surgery, but is at home now. She isn't feeling too well, but that's to be expected. Also Lillie Spies fell down the stairs at her daughterfs home and had to have hip surgery. She is in Park Plaza Hospital. We hope you are better, Lillie. Then Mary Krippner was in a very bad automobile accident last Thursday night. It was a hit-andrun. She is at Ben Taub hospital and isn't doing too well. We should remember all these ladies in our prayers.

A motion was made and seconded that we have only one meeting per month on the second Wednesday with a luncheon, starting in January.

Motion carried. If the ladies want to, they can come to the lodge and play bingo or whatever, on the first Wednesday, but bring your own lunch.

Our hostesses the first Wednesday of October were Ellen Miculka, who is filling in for Estelle Kelly, and Kathy Trefell. Almeida Bravanec: helped in the absence of Willie Mae Ermis, whose husband Jerry Ermis, was ill. We had ham, furnished by the, birthday club and covered dishes, supplied by the ladies. Cakes were baked

by Lillie Spies, Willie Mae Ermis, Ellen Miculka, Mary Quider and Margie Anders. Our hostesses the second Wednesday were Willie Mae Ermis and Edna Froelich. We had sandwiches and salads. Cakes were baked by Willie Mae Ermis, Evelyn Gutkowski, Edna Froelich and Corrine Kessler.

September birthdays were celebrated by Era Richards, Julie Kinnoman and Ellen Miculka. October birthdays were celebrated by Mary Kosut, Mary Krippner and Doris Knapick.

Hostesses for November will be Margie Anders and Evelyn Gutkowski on the first Wednesday. Cakes will be made by these ladies. Also, cakes on the first Wednesday will be baked by Almeida Bravanec, Mary Kosut and Josephine Buri. Hostesses the second Wednesday will be Georgie Buchanan and Edna Froelich. 92, Fort Worth Ladies' Circle reports on October meeting Lodge

The Ladies' Circle of SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at the lodge hall with 38 members, three men and one guest present.

President Helen Kubala called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

We welcomed our guest, Beverly McQueen.

In the absence of Secretary Betty Lindsay, the minutes of the September meeting were read by acting secretary Martha Durham. A correction was made regarding Florence Greer's request that donations of pastry pie servers be made by the members.

Lodge 88, Houston's Mildred Holeman "Lutheran Woman of the Year" Reared in conservative East Texas, Mildred enjoys the freedom of the Lutheran Church, having found in her life the real meaning that Jesus came that we might Mildred Holeman have life and have it mor abundantly. She has lived an abundant life and all of her successes she attributes to her relationship with Jesus.

She has many firsts to her credit, both in the church and in the community. Among those firsts are that she was the first woman to serve as.

President of the Parents/Teachers League of Our Savior; was a non-voting advisor member on the Building Committee of the Shepherd location some 37 years ago; and represented the church when that location was sold to the Houston Independent School District.

Mildred served as President of Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) in 1963-64 and again (30 years later!) in 1993-94.

This is but one example of her devotion and commitment to the LWML. In her community, she has consistently collected in her neighborhood for United Fund, March of Dimes, Cancer Society and Heart Association, among others from time to time. Besides collecting funds, she has repainted and remodeled houses, installing wheelchair ramps and lifts for those in need. In one instance, Mildred arranged for free labor to repair and paint a woman's home who had suffered the violent death of a son and other unbelievable misery.

Her contention was that if the survivor lived in bright surroundings, her grief would not diminish but would be more bearable. Mention a need to Mildred and she'll be out trying to fill that need. She has done these jobs for no recognition or reward, other than knowing it was the right thing to do.

Mildred began her early career life as a legal secretary, having worked for L.A. Kucera for 38 years.

Through her employment, she was a trusted friend and confidante of his many clients, such that they named her as the executrix of their estate.

Today, she is serving many such estates and their family members, again seeing that right is done for those descendants. Her employer, since deceased, recognized that Mildred was very special and he caused her to be named to boards of directors of various organizations, including banks. He also encouraged her to become a licensed real estate agent and broker, as well as a licensed insurance agent, which she did and remains to this day, in her own successful business. All during her employment, she was privileged to continue work with her church, being very active in the beginning of Good Samaritan Lutheran Home, where she remains a life member.

Mildred has always shown herself to be a leader. Among other positions, she has served as President of Texas Association of Legal Secretaries, President of Houston Association of Legal Secretaries, Corresponding Secretary of the National Association of Legal Secretaries and Parliamentarian of many local and state secretaries' associations. She served on a panel for the CBS affiliate, Channel 11 in Houston, called Public Forum, for two or three years.

Returning to her firsts, she was the first non-Czech to serve as President and the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Board of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas (SPJST) Lodge 88, and to serve 16 years as Bylaws Chairman for the Supreme Lodge; and the first woman to serve as an Officer and Board member of Liberty Savings Association.

Finally, Mildred has proved her strength in her personal life. She was married to Jack Holeman for 50 years, and they raised one daughter and three fine sons. Jack and Mildred suffered the loss of a son in 1991, and Mildred lost Jack in 1997.

To this day, she works full time in her many successful businesses and for her church and her Lord.

Treasurer Evelyn Spacek gave account balances and a report on the Pastry Booth's great success on Czech Heritage Day. The profit from sales of pastry, plus members' cash donations, brought our bank balances back to nor-_ mal. All were thanked for the help given in the Pastry Booth, for pastry donations and for cash donations. A big thank you especially went to Elma Anderson, Ima Lou LaPlant and Billye Starr who so ably took charge of the pastry booth., Sunshine Chairman Evelyn Spacek reported sending get well wishes to Bess Lawson who was recently hospitalized. We learned today that Florence Greer was at North Hills Hospital with her sister, Mary Palachek, who was getting treatment for pneumonia. Get well quick, Mary!

Nieswiodomy will be having eye surgery on November 10 we will be pulling for you, Rose.

Hostess Chairman Jo Prochaska thanked today's hostesses: Julie Dueser, Martha Boenisch, Mary Ann Kozel and Ann Schneider. Super job, delicious food! No November hostesses needed as we will go out to eat.

December hostesses will be Elma Anderson, Ima Lou La Plant, Billye Starr and Linda Lewis.

For our next meeting on Tuesday, November 9, 1999 it was voted that we go out to eat at Golden Corral Restaurant, Grapevine Hwy/Loop 820, near North Hills Mall. Those who do not know the way should come to the lodge hall for group travel. Be there at 10 a.m. sharp top arrive at Golden Corral at 11 a.m. Evelyn Spacek and Helen Kubala will greet us with a $5 bill to help offset the cost of the meal.

Guests are welcome, but only Ladies' Circle members will receive the monetary gift. After the luncheon, we will return to the lodge hall for games. A motion was made and seconded and approved that a $300 donation be given to Lodge 92 in thanks for use of the hall for our monthly meetings.

For our December meeting, we will be celebrating Christmas, Mr. Wright will be here for the gift exchange and those participating should bring a giftwrapped $5 gift. The Ladies' Circle will furnish the ham for the dinner; members should bring a side dish or dessert. This is always a festive, fun time, so plan to be here.

Lodge 133 held its regular meeting on Sunday, September 18th at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Activity Center located at 1630 Goliad Road in San Antonio.

180, Burleson readies for District Three Fall Meeting Lodge

President John Hilcher opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance recited by all. A moment of silence was observed for our departed members, friends, loved ones and especially for former District Three Director Sid Pokladnik. Our sincere condolences to his wife, Justine, and his family.

Rhonda Hurtik read the minutes of the September meeting which were approved as read.

All other officers made their reports.

We decided to sponsor a young soccer team in Maypearl which contains two of members.

A memorial was sent to Lodge 84 in memory of Sid Pokladnik.

Election of officers will be held at the November meeting.

We discussed the District Three Meeting which we are hosting on October 24. The dinner will include brisket, sausage, potatoes, vegetables. cole slaw, home made bread and desserts, coffee and tea. Kolaches and doughnuts will be available in the morning. Plates will be sold for $5 and $3 with $2 taken off for two canned goods. These will be donated to Harvest House in Burleson.

Thanks a lot for the beautiful flowers and cake presented to me and Carol Hilcher on our birthdays. Happy birthday to Bill Hilcher.

Austin Czech Historical Association hosts celebration of Czech culture Saturday, October 23 In conjunction with the 76th legislature's designation of October being Czech Heritage Month, Austin Czech Historical Association in proud to announce the Fifth Annual Celebration of Czech Culture in Austin.

The evening will include a sixcourse Czech dinner. The meal will consist of roast pork with cabbage and dumplings, wild mushroom strudel with tarragon sauce, sauteed kielbasa with sauerkraut, potato leek soup, tossed greens, pickled herring, cucumber salad and extraordinary Czech desserts, such as homemade kolaches, bread pudding with butter sauce and apple strudel prepared by pastry chef, Pavla.

There will be a fun-filled program that will have dance performances, delightful singing and other unique entertainment. You wait and see!

College offers Czech class starting November 1

Historical Association raises $12,039 for TCHCC in La Grange The Austin Czech Historical Association, in conjunction with the Travis-Williamson Counties Czech Heritage Society, raised $12,039 at its Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center Fun Raiser held on May 23 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in La Grange.

Approximately 300 guests attend the dinner/dance, including groups from Austin, Dallas, West, Temple, Ennis, San Antonio and Houston.

Many attendees came costumed in traditional Czech costumes.

The day included tours of the Center's site with transportation provided by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA). Music by the Kovanda Czech Band of Houston and Fayetteville headlined the event.

Intermission featured the Central Texas Accordion Band, lead by Willard Dyer, Patty Burk and Major Lois Tilley plus Leroy Matocha.

Executive Chef Pavia Adamik Van Bibber of Austin created a Czech dinner buffet. The event, which included a silent auction and dancing, was cochaired by Lori Najvar, Woody Smith, Pavla Adamik Van Bibber and Richard Pavlasek, all of Austin.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange will be an interactive historical and cultural center dedicated to the heritage of Texas' one million Czechs. The Center will be built on 70 acres above the Colorado River off Highway 77 in La Grange. It will include a museum/library/archives, amphitheater, living history farm, living history Texas Czech village and picnic grounds.

Originated by a coalition of Texas Czech organizations, the Center is a non-profit organization. A $17 million capital campaign to fund the Center is currently under way. Czech Heritage and Cultural Center seeking office

Texas Conversational Czech II will be offered November 1 through December 3, 1999 at Austin Community College, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

This is a class for students who have completed a basic Czech language class and have some knowledge of the Czech language and want to improve their reading, speaking and listening skills. The course will focus on developing complex expressions. (21 hours) Textbooks required. Class fee $68.25 The classes will be held at ACC Highland Business Center, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road, near Highland Mall.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center of La Grange is seeking an old building to restore for its onsite office and visitors' center. "We are looking for a donation of a structurally sound building, built before 1940, that could be moved and renovated for our office," says Marvin Marek of Missouri City, chairman of the Artifacts Committee for the Center.

"We could use a house, farm building or retail building. We are particularly interested in Texas Czech buildings that reflect the style of the early Czechs—exposed wood ceiling beams and tongue-and-groove wood floors and walls."

The building will be moved to the Center's site on 70 acres adjacent to the Fayette County Fair Ground.

In Memoriam Expression of Sympathy We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 201, Bleiblerville-Nelsonville, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest condolences to the family of our departed lodge brother, DALTON PAUL ALBERT. Funeral services for Dalton Paul Albert were held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 15, 1999 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bellville, Texas with Pastor Willie Rotter officiating, assisted by Pastor Anne Ward.

Burial followed in the Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville, Texas.

Dalton Paul "Dutch" Albert was born January 31, 1923 in Nelsonville, Texas, the son of Louis J. and Hattie (Juergens) Albert. He attended the Bellville public schools and Texas A&M University before serving his country in the United States Army from 1943 until 1946.

On March 10, 1946, he was united in marriage at the First Baptist Church in Bellville with Phil Turner of Lexington, Texas.

He was a 50-year member of Lodge 201.

Dalton passed away on Monday, September 13, 1999 at his home in Nelsonville, Texas at the age of 76 years. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Phil Albert of Nelsonville; children, Cindy Konescheck and husband, Doug of Sealy and Paul Albert and his wife, Donna of Ft. Myers, Florida; grandchildren, Heath and Dustin Konescheck of Sealy and Jodi, Jessica, Jennifer and Justin Albert of Ft. Myers, Florida; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schmidt Funeral in Bellville, Texas.

Albina Tracie (Surovik) Krupala was born August 22, 1903 to parents Tom and Frances (Nedbalek) Surovik.

She was raised in Star Hill. She married Paul Krupala, Jr. on August 9, 1927 at Nelsonville Brethren Church.

Mrs. Krupala was a member of Lodge 201, SPJST BleiblervilleNelsonville, Mutual Aid Society of Czech-Moravian Brethrens.

Survivors include her daughters, Ruth Schroeder and her husband, Elmer of Houston; Irene and her husband, Calvin Frank of Houston; sons,

Edwin Krupala and wife, Edna of Bellville, Paul T. Krupala and wife, Patricia of Bellville; nine grandchildren; two step grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Frances Surovik, husband, Paul Krupala; two brothers; five sisters; and one grandson.

Resolution Committee Mrs. Celesta Balke -SPJST-

In Memory of Raymond Jesse Woytek Raymond Jesse Woytek of Round Rock Was born in Holland, Texas on May 21, 1923 to James and Tillie Woytek. Ray passed away at home on October 10, 1999 following a courageous two-year battle with cancer and surrounded by his loving family.

Ray was a life-long resident of the Central Texas area where he and his wife of 53 years, Ella Mae Woytek, raised their family of four children, who, with their combined eight children, still live in the Round Rock area.

After graduating from Holland High School, Ray served in the United States Army Engineering Corps from 1943 to 1946. He advanced to First Sergeant with command of 280 men in the European Theater where he was injured in battle. On October 12, 1946, he married the love of his life, Ella Mae Anderson. After attending Nixon Clay Business College, Ray was active in the Austin business community for many years as owner of Capital City Office Outfitters, Woytek Insurance Agency and Woytek Builders, Inc. developing Red Bud Acres and Wildwood Country in Round Rock.

Ray served seven years on the Round Rock ISD Board of Trustees, six years on the Palm Valley Lutheran Church Board and five years on the Goetha Farm Mutual Fire insurance Association. Ray was especially proud of organizing SPJST Lodge 187 in September of 1977, serving as its first president. He was instrumental in raising money for building the new lodge hall and managed the construction through completion in July of 1979.

Ray is survived by his wife, Ella Mae Woytek; son Ronald Woytek and wife, Susan; daughter Teri Maxwell and husband, Jerry; daughter Carla Shipman.and husband, Ricky; and son Robert. He also is survived by his eight grandchildren that adored him: Kyle, Ryan, Reed and Wade Woytek, Shannon and Jordan T. Maxwell and Riley and Kelsey Shipman. Ray also is survived by his sister, Margaret McGavern of Austin.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Carsten Kampe and his staff at Texas Oncology, Dr. Isabel Hoverman and her staff, Drs. Craig Lubin and Richard Sperling, and Lone Star Hospice for all of their medical assistance and personal support during the past two years.

Pallbearers were Kyle, Ryan, Reed and Wade Woytek, Jordan T. Maxwell and Riley Shipman.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tuesday, October 12, in the Beck Funeral Home, Round Rock location.

Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m.

Cultural Center Houston Urbis free concert set for October 26 Czech

The University of St. Thomas Music Department and Czech Cultural Center Houston will participate in the promotion of "A Celebration of Czech Composers Past and Present", an evening to remember of Czech music performed by world-renowned pianist Mr. Richard Urbis. The concert will be a one-night performance on Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at 8 p.m. in Cullen Hall, University of St. Thomas, 4001 Mr. Vernon, Houston, Texas.

Richard Urbis, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music in New York, will perform music of Antonin Dvorak, Robert J. Dvorak, Jan Dusik, Bedrich Smetana and Leos Janacek as well as his own compositions.

District Two DYC reports on fall meeting activities Dear Readers, The annual District Two Fall Meetin g held at Lodge 24, Cyclone was a huge success. We thank Lodge 24 for their great hospitality.

We were very pleased to have District Two Queen Sara Kostiha give her winnin g speech.

The Christmas ornament contest was fantastic. We had 33 youth entries and 13 adult entries. And the ornaments were beautiful. I would love to have one of each for my tree. What talent our members have, both youth and adults. Thank you to each of you who entered. A special thank you to our judges Deana Naiver, Evelyn Jez and Melanie Regan and to tabulators, Edwin Pechal, David Nauert and Woodrow Marek.

Another huge success for our youth club was our silent auction. This year's auction for our district youth club was the best ever. We had 25 donations. All the donations were so nice. We thank those of you who made the donations. And thank you to those of you who made the purchases. It was a lot of fun to watch the bidders down to the final second. We appreciate all your support of our youth of District Two. Monies raised will go toward our District Lock-In which will be held November 13.

Youth members interested in playing volleyball in the state tournament on November 13, please give me a call.

District Two has a place for you youth ages 7th g rade through high school senior. Several lodges have shown interest. There are also several adult teams forming. We hope District Two will be very well represented.

youngsters, adults enjoy Fiesta Texas Dear Members, If you don't succeed the first time, try again. We didn't succeed last year to our District Two trip to Fiesta Texas in San Antonio. Buses arrived safely, despite the rain, only for us to find out Fiesta Texas would be closed for the day due to flooding. We did try again, and our 1999 trip to Fiesta Texas was great. Our mornin g started off great when we boarded the buses. We were the passengers of two brand new, beautiful Arrow Trailways buses. They were so nice. I want to thank Brenda Brown of Arrow Trailways for all her help — the discount on the buses due to last year's trip and her communication with Fiesta Texas and our discount tickets.

We had a wonderful safe, trip.

Everyone enjoyed the trip. We had youth and adult from Elgin, Granger, Cyclone, Taylor, Seaton, Academy, and Round Rock. We were very glad to have adult members from Granger join us.

It was a beautiful day with perfect weather.

Thanks to all of you who joined us for the trip. Each year District Two takes a bus trip which is open to adults and youth. Our destination is decided by our youth members and final details are worked out at the Youth Leader District training in April Let your youth leaders hear from you for our 2000 trip.

I would personally like to apologize for not recognizing Wesley Perez in my Youth Achievement Day article.

Wesley won first place in the age 6 to 8 hobby kits division at State YAD. Lodge 92 Youth Club would like to send our heartfelt sympathy to Mrs. Christine Zich and her daughters, Shirley and Carol for the recent passing of husband and father, Carl Zich. We will all miss him so very much.

Lodge 92 celebrated Czech Heritage Day on Saturday, September 18, 1999 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the National Hall in Fort Worth. The day was filled with fun events to celebrate our Czech Heritage such as dancing to awesome polka bands, prize drawings and great food provided by Riscky's Barbecue.

The youth club sold souvenirs such as Czech Heritage Day cups and shirts.

The day was a huge success for the youth group. We worked in the kitchen 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. and we sold hamburgers, nachos, klobase and coffee. We had a prize drawing for a little Czech-dressed doll. Mrs. Monalee Hattendorf won the doll. The youth group and everyone who attended Czech Heritage Day at Lodge 92 had a great time.

These early societies had another purpose. They recognized the need of human beings for companionship. For -tat reason, they provided a way for people to meet in frien ly gatherings — where selfishness and prejudice were smpressed and the principles of brc‘herho were nurtured, thereby estab:!shing fitter understanding among the mem:ars.
