The PoWer of Partnerships Fall Meetings Commence The support of friends, family and fellow lodge members can truly work wonders. To meet with like minds and discuss the challenges and triumphs of life - it's a wonderful feeling . . .

Please note that fall district meetings are kick off this Sunday with District Two meeting at Lodge 24, Cyclone and District Five meeting at Lodge 196, Houston-West. Although the meeting formats differ across districts, they typically include a brief business meeting and plenty of time for fun and games. See pages three through five of this week's Vestnik for details of upcoming fall meetings.

HJR 4 Update Recall that in the September 1 Vestnik, the editorial summarized HJR-4, a proposed amendment to the Texas Constitution, which will appear on the November 2 ballot. This resolution, if passed by voters, will amend the Texas Constitution to permit the exemption of property taxes for qualifying charitable organiations.

Granted, HB 1978 makes no specific references to fraternal benefit societies; however, passage of the constitutional amendment could be a real plus for our lodges in any future quest to seek legislative relief from ad valorem taxation. As previously stated, the requirement that an organization would have to engage in purely charitable functions would be stricken from the Constitution. Moreover, it states that a qualifying organization need not engage exclusively in charitable functions as long as its other functions are "related to" its charitable activities.

With such wording in place, all that may be necessary, according to a source in Senator Steve Ogden's office, would be for fraternals to seek "enabling legislation" that would qualify them to receive an exemption under Section 11.18 of the Property Tax Code. In layman's terms, it may not require Constitutional revision, merely an amendment to an existing statute which would certainly be much simpler to achieve.

Achieving legislative relief from the ad valorem tax is possible. Our odds for achieving success will improve dramatically with thoughtful planning, effective communication and diligent action. Spread the word and vote!

'0' October is Czech Heritage Month You may have already known that the last week of October is celebrated as Czech Heritage Week in Texas; however, did you know that October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas? The resolution designating such was declared by the 76th Texas Legislature and signed into effect by Texas Governor George Bush on June 6, 1999. For detailed information on the resolution, please refer to the article from Sister Willa Mae Cervenka of Lodge 54, West, which appears on page 13 of this week's Vestnik.

The youth will have a silent auction, so try to help them by bringing somethings or at least bid on the items. The youth will also have their Christmas ornament contest.

All in all, we plan to have a very good day of fun and enjoyment, so come on to Flag Hall, Lodge 24, on Sunday, September 19th and have a good time and some good food with us, for we are going to have a "wheeling good day". Hope to see you there.

Tickets for the games will be sold this year at 10 tickets for $1 (no free tickets will be given). District Two will provide all the food items for the country store. District Two Officers ask that each family bring a cake for the country stores. The youth program will have their traditional silent auction to raise money for the youth. We will have a prize drawing for $25, $50 and $75. The cost for the prize drawing is 7 for $5 or 1 for $1.

Contest Guidelines Guidelines for entering contests are as follows: • You must be a member of the SPJST • One person (no teams) must make kolaches from scratch using yeast dough.

• Needlework includes embroidery, crocheting, knitting and needlepoint and must be made entirely by hand.

• Horseshoe contest will be made up of teams of two (2) SPJST members, 16 years of age and older.

Cash prizes will be given to the 1st place winners, so make your plans to attend a fun filled day.

Make A Difference Day

District Four co-hosting Czech Fest October 30 in Wall Men, women, boys and girls — everybody is invited to attend the SPJST District Four Czech Heritage Celebration set for October 30 at St. Ambrose Hall in Wall, Texas. The event is being hosted by SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo, RVOS District Five and the Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society. The celebration is being held in conjunction with Czech Heritage Week in Texas.

Admission is free. Registration starts at 1 p.m. for the event which will include music by the Batla-Haviak Polka Polka Time Band from 2 until 6 p.m. Supper will be served at 5 p.m.

Dear Readers, Saturday, October 2, 1999, District Six will be hosting an IBCA Sanctioned Barbecue Cookoff and Children's Fall Festival at the Jaycee Hall Grounds in Victoria. Everyone is invited to attend

While service provides its own reward, participating in the National Make a Difference Day on October 23 could also mean cash dollars for your adult lodge or youth club. The judging will begin at noon and first through tenth places are being awarded for Brisket, Pork Spare Ribs, 1/2 Fully Jointed Chicken and Jackpot Beans with 80 percent of entry fee payback up to $5,000. Showmanship Awards will also be presented.

Throughout the afternoon, visitors can enjoy a Children's Festival. We will have a Pumpkin Patch set up for picture-taking, a Ghost Hunt, Ring Toss, Cake Walk, Pumpkin Coloring Contest, Face Painting and a Bean Bag Toss. The youth of District Six will be in charge of the various games.

All of the District Six lod g es are reminded to bring cakes for the cake walk and donations of candy for the various booths would be greatly appreciated. Volunteers are still needed to assist with the judging, games and overall day's activities. West Fest Best Congratulations to Sister Lydia Dobecka of Lodge 6, Cottonwood, who was named "Grand Champion" in the non-commercial baking category at this year's Westfest.

24, Cyclone readying for Czech Heritage Day event Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Doors open at 3 p.m. for the event which will include an SPJST Museum display and polka mass at 5:30 p.m. with music by the Vrazels Polka Band.

Linda Gaas wins Lodge 17, New Tabor Tarok Tournament A brighter, lighter SPJST Lodge 17, New Tabor, awaited a group of a.m.-stunned Tarok players (self included) on Saturday, July 17, 1999 After restorations and several coats of paint, SPJST Lodge 17 presented a fresh new look for arriving members and guests.

Who was going to win the tournament on this lovely summer day?

Tarok players carefully selected their player number — closing their eyes, taking deep breaths and stirring the number pot with their stickiest finger in hopes of capturing the day's "lucky" number.

It just so happens that the lucky number for this tournament stuck to the finger of Linda Gaas. Linda picked lucky number 5, the winner

Rudy Kaspar fell below the 900

mark with 864 points for six rounds, setting him up to follow Linda by 50 points. (Rudy, your lucky finger was good; it just wasn't as sticky as Linda's.)

Tarok players from around the state converged on Lodge 17, New Tabor on July 17 for the annual tarok ournament.

Some of Linda's magnetic luckiness flowed over and blessed her husband, Randy, too. Besides running the tournament, Randy kept his scores in the mid-range 800's and won third place with a 138 point round average.

Johnnie Bartosh's average round score, standing at 119.5, was over 100 points behind Randy's third place score, but hey, he's in there for fourth place. Way to go Johnnie.

The fifth through eight places, were respectively: Bobby Wuensche, 705 points; Albert Kubala, 699 points; Clarence Sefcik, 680 points; and Susan Skrabanek 668 points Congratulations again to all the top eight players and especially to Linda Gaas, Rudy Kaspar, Randy Gaas and Johnnie Bartosh for winning first through fourth places.

Thanks to Lodge 17, New Tabor for their hospitality. Thanks to the kitchen crew for their help and assistance in preparing a delicious lunch and for setting and cleaning up. The hall looked great, nice, bright and sunny!

Several afternoon cloud-bursts gushed down on the roof of the old hall, giving a refreshing respite from the summer heat. The air-conditioner cranking away inside the hall also provided a breeze so chill you could almost forget there was a Texas summer steaming along just outside the front door. Better to be in here, than say, in a cotton field!

Lodge 47, Seaton introduces its newest and youngest members, Justin Lane Kraatz, fivemonth-old son of Brad and Joyce Kraatz of Seaton, who, incidentally, was born on Sunday, March 21, the day of the District Two Spring Meeting at Star Hall. Grandmother Dorothy Pechal purchased the insurance. Justin's greatgrandmother, Theresa Clapek, 98, uncles, aunts and cousins are all members of Lodge 47, Seaton and welcome Justin aboard.

Lodge 81, Needville reports on August meeging -Dear Readers, On Sunday, August 15, 1999, Lodge 81 of Needville met for their monthly meeting. We had a nice group of people on this beautiful day. An invitation is always extended for anyone to come join us.

The five dollar door prizes were won by: Bernie Tielke, Johnny Kujawa, Alvin Blinka, and Gilbert Walzel. We also had some extra prizes brought to us by District Five Director, Louis Hanus. These were won by: Darlene Blinka, Emma Kujawa, and Arnold Dusek. Congratulations to these lucky winners!

After a prayer of thanks, a delicious meal of potluck with a variety of meats, side dishes and desserts was served. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for this creative variety.

At 1pm, President Vincent Newman called the meeting to order. Edwin Susan led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We had a moment of silence for our departed member, Erwin Krueger. All officers answered the roll call. Reports were read by Secretary, Willie Mae Kuykendall, Treasurer, Benita Walzel, and Special Fund Chairman,Gilbert Walzel.

There were no corrections to the reports, so they were accepted as read.

Added to our sick list was: Frankie Sebesta. We wish her a speedy recovery.

Under old business, President Vincent Newman reported that he talked to the man who is supposed to repair the lodge's copying machine and that the repairman is still trying to locate the part needed.

New Regulation Sheet Under new business, Special Funds Chairman, Gilbert Walzel reported that a new regulation sheet with the hall rentals has been revised. He filled us in on two new regulations. Also, under new business, Jeanette Newman reported that everyone needs to start thinking about who would be our Fraternalist of our lodge.

After all business was finished, District V Director, Brother Louis Hanus gave us a few words with information from the home office. It's always nice to see you Brother Hanus.

87, Temple reports on August meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 87, Temple met on August 10, 1999. We were lucky enough to begin by stuffing ourselves with several ice cream flavors and other goodies. President Norma Alford's sister, Henrietta Everett, sent a delicious carrotcake, while Sister Mary Ann Zatopek brought one of the homebaked treats with which we have become spoiled. We were especially appreciative of Brother John Troy's hand-cranked, homemade peach ice cream!

Following the expressions of our gastronomic appreciation, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed

a moment of silence for our departed members. Treasurer Daryl Entrop's fuly report was read and approved. The minutes were read and amended to state that our June report of 21 new members may have been exaggerated.

The home office was able to confirm 9 new members between January and June, which is still cause to applaud our sales reps!

Our only correspondence was from the home office, urging our sales reps to participate in the "Denim RoundUp" membership drive.

FAC Thelma Groppell, was unable to attend, leaving President Alford to announce her own birthday and that of Lad Zatopek. Sister Bertha Capps also received congratulations for the birth of twin granddaughters on August 3rd!

President Alford moved on (after our enthusiastic rendition of Happy Birthday) to remind us about Westfest on September 4th and 5th and the Czech Fest in Dallas on the 12th and the District 2 Fall Meeting on the 19th.

October Celebration Planned We discussed using our annual mailing to send out invitations to our upcoming October lodge celebration.

We will thus invite our whole membership and bring honor and recognition to all! We plan to send the invitations before our next meeting so people will have plenty of time to respond.

Finally, we offered congratulations to one of our former members, Dawn Marie Capps, who transferred to a different lodge last year. We are proud to congratulate her for a successful Youth Achievement Day. She won Second Place in our district with her dance routine and First Place in the state for the special category of "Trash Art." We will be serving finger foods at our September 14th meeting and will finalize the plans for our October celebration then.

97,Placedo hosts Adopt-A-Pet speaker September 30 Lodge

Lodge 97, Placedo will hold its September meeting at 6:30 at the Victoria Co-Op Building in Victoria. on Thursday, September 30.

President Yvonne Garrett will have a speaker from Adopt-A-Pet, the benefactor of our recent aluminum can drive. A current drive is also being held by the youth club. Some animals will be on display also.

Because of the barbecue cookoff held the next day, the games party had to be cancelled. Members are all geared up for the Barbeque Cookoff on Oct. 1-2. Final preparations will be discussed at the meeting as well.

Door prizes and refreshments will be served.

Also reminding the youth club that their meeting will be held also.

Rehearsal for the upcoming district meeting's skit will be held so it is advised that all parents of youth encourage the children to attend.

A Memorable Trip: Cruising to Alaska with the Vrazels

Amemorable trip this was—with luxurious accommodations aboard the Norwegian Wind cruise ship and a very scary incident while whalewatching near Haines, Alaska.

Bill and I decided at the last minute that we could do this cruise if there was still room for us. Bernice Vrazel put us on stand-by and sure enough, she had a cancellation and we made it. We had to fly out a day early so we left at noon on Sunday, June 27. We spent the night in Seattle and joined the Vrazel group at 10 a.m. and headed to Vancouver in buses via a very scenic route. In Vancouver, we boarded the Norwegian Wind and at 5:30 p.m. that evening we were on our way to Alaska!

During the night, we sailed through very choppy waters, with huge swells, which made for a lot of very sick passengers. Tuesday morning, we ate breakfast — very lightly and carefully — and hoped it would stay down! All day, we sailed and sailed, heading north to Juneau.

On Wednesday morning at 8:45 a.m., we had a beautiful Polka Mass, with singing to the music of the Vrazel Polka Band. This made the cruise very special and we all left the Stardust Lounge (where the Mass was held) feeling spiritually refreshed. We had one hour of dancing after the Mass (on a postagestamp dance floor, but we had fun.)

We docked in Juneau at 8 a.m.

After lunch we went ashore for our first tour. Henrietta and Jaro Nevlud and Bill and I did all our tours together. We boarded a bus which took us on a tour of Juneau and then on to view the Mendenhall Glacier. It is hard to put into words the beauty and grandeur of this natural phenomena.

We went back to the ship, had dinner and headed back into Juneau.

Henrietta and I had a great time shopping for souvenirs for our grandchildren while Bill and Jaro stood by patiently waiting for us to get our fill of shopping.

We had been told to be sure and go to the Red Dog Saloon while in Juneau so off we went. What a neat, wild place that is. We met several of our Vrazel group as they came dancing out of the saloon, looking very happy and telling us what a great place it is. We went in with about five couples from our group. The place was packed. A one-man band was playing country-western music and the beer was $4.50 a bottle (Alaskan Amber). We had a great time time, but Bill later remarked, "I must be loose in the head to pay $4.50 for one bottle of beer."

We had a designated time to be back on the ship and one half hour after the passengers were on, we sailed on to the next port, Skagway.

In Skagway, we went ashore and boarded the narrow gauge train to ride to the summit which was a four hour tour. This is a narrow gauge rail because of the sharp turns as the train climbs up the very steep grades. A narrow gauge is 48 inches wide while a regular rail is five feet, eight and one half inches wide. This was a very enjoyable tour and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery as we climbed to the top. We met a lot of nice folks from England. There was one little lady — at least 80 years old — travelling all alone. She told me she usually travels with a group but this time she was alone. Her next trip she told me will be to Nepal and Thailand. We sailed out of Skagway and headed for Haines, which is just around the bend by water, but 350 miles by land (15 miles by water.)

At their August meeting, Lodge 177, Academy President Bill Hutka, right, presented Lodge 24, Cyclone with a $500 check to be applied toward Lodge 24's fall Flag Hall painting project. Accepting the generous gift on behalf of Lodge 24, were, Lodge 24 Treasurer Brian Vanicek and Vice President and FAC LaVerne Cabla. mine being five days late one week, I finally checked into it. The problem is not with the publisher. It appears that the problem for our area is with the postal holding facility in Dallas. I called the new 800 number for the postal system. The calls go into Kansas City and are then referred to the local post office. I had a return call. This last week, the Vestnik came only about two days late. I encourage our members to also call. If enough of us do, maybe the post office will correct its problem.

204, Stephenville meets September 19 Lodge

The regular meeting of Lodge 204 met on August 29th at the Golden Corral in Stephenville at 2 p.m. There was a short meeting the members discussed the future of the lodge and some upcoming events that the lodge may try to help get things rolling faster. Sandra Pearce said she would like to enter the youth in the St. Jude Marathon and try to raise some funds. It not only helps to raise money for St. Jude, it is also a good lesson in math for the youth and everybody needs to learn math to be able to cope with the world nowadays.

Next Meeting on Sunday The next meeting should be the third Sunday in September which would be the 19th at 2 p.m. I hope more members can come and tell the officers what they like to do so more events can be planned in the future. This is your lodge and the officers would like to hear from you.

Since my last letter, things have happened around the Kneschk house —first my mother had a stroke and passed away. Also we were notified that one of Gracie's nephews was killed in car wreck near Caper Wyoming. He was one of five boys in a car coming off Caper Mountain and the driver lost control of the car and the car went airborne for about 85 feet before hitting the ground again and four of the boys were killed so it has not been a good month for the Kneschk family.

District Two youth counselor encourages fall meeting attendance

This year's highlight of the fall meeting will be our District Two King Chad Cervenka and Queen Sara Kostiha's winning speeches and a variety of talent which was performed at Youth Achievement Day. The District youth club will also be having a silent auction. In the past, these have been very successful. Each youth club is asked to bring an item to the auction of $10 value. We appreciate very much any items donated by members and lodges. And of course, we appreciate and thank those of you who bid on the items. Proceeds will go toward our annual lock-in held in November.

Herbert Hoover ran for president with the slogan "A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage", and Dodge and Chrysler motors merged.

Famous people who were born in 1928 were Shirley Temple, Che Guevara, Rosemary Clooney, Vic Damone and James Garner.

The average income for the year 1928 was $1,490 and widow's pension (from the union) was $1.50 to $3.50 per month; domestic labor earned $725 per year; but beef rib roast cost 35 cents per pound; a bicycle cost $32.45; a Packard seven-passenger limousine cost $4,550; and an electric range cost $25.50.

All of these things happened just one year before the great stock market crash in 1929. As you can see, even before the crash, things were not all that good in these great American States, but people helped others more then and had time to have a good time.

Also, they would get together at harvest time for a fest and dance and thank God for all the good things that happened during the past year. When one neighbor got sick and could not work for a few days, the rest of the neighbors would jump in and help until he would get well. This is one for the reasons that SPJST was formed and why it has been so successful all of these years.

Ever hear about the man that had all kind of hard luck and his neighbors kept telling to cheer up things could be worse. So the man cheered up and sure enough things got worse.

Campfire songs were sung.

The song, "I'm a Nut" seemed to be the biggest hit. We had an added treat of discovering tree frogs on our way to the campfire. These creatures were tun to spot with our flashlights and watch as they croaked in the night air. After a long day of traveling and many fun times at camp, the day was ended with a pizza party in the Celebration House.

Everyone was ready then get rested for the next full day of activities.

District Four Camp:

Time flys when you're having fun!

Dear Readers, Campers from District Four headed to Camp Lone Star on July 16. After stopping in Llano for lunch, we continued on our trip. Of course, we had to stop to visit the fish at Lake Buchanan and feed them some bread.

What's in a Name?

Upon arrival at camp, everyone unloaded at the cabins. We then met at the Celebration House to receive camp schedules, rules for camp and name tags. We decided to give ourselves animal names on our nametags. We used animals that had the same first letter as the first letter in our names. Names such as Betty Burro and Hayden Hawk were part of our group A game of Boing Ball followed our evening meal. This was a gem played similar to softball but using a rubber ball and a boing racket. Afterwards, it was time to initiate the first-time campers. Johnna Schwartz and Hayden Bell were given a big bottle of koolaid to drink as their initiation. By the way, the bottle was a baby bottle.

They seemed to find it a little more difficult to do than when they were a baby.

To cool off from the heat, everyone jumped in the pool for an evening swim. Campfire followed swimming.

We had a ceremony around the camp-

Saturday was started off with a flag raising ceremony that we shared with District Seven who was camping at the same time as us. Following a hearty breakfast we headed out to the challenge course. These are always fun physical activities that also teach us teamwork and cooperation.

Melanie and her fiancee, David, joined us on the trails and were gracious enough to carry the water container. After about an hour of this strenuous activity, everyone was ready to be "watered down." Archery was the next activity on the schedule.

Everyone had an opportunity to learn to use a bow and arrow. Some became quite accurate at hitting the target. Sometimes the arrows just didn't want to cooperate and missed the target completely.

It was hard to believe it was already time for lunch. Everyone made a made dash to the cafeteria since the dark clouds finally decided to open up. The rain really helped cool everyone during the afternoon while we made two craft items. A clay flower pot was sponge painted and then glued to a clay bowl to create a potpourri dish. The second craft involved gluing flowers, leaves and grass to a clay dish to create the base for a candle holder. All were proud of their work and were anxious to take them home to mom.

Canoeing is always a treat at camp.

This year Camp. Lone Star also provided a paddle boat. Since we didn't have as many teenagers with us at camp this year, there was a lot less "accidentally" falling out of the canoes. Snack time

was followed by a game of bunko.

Howard joined us and had the pleasure of learning how to play this game from the younger campers. Following the flag lowering and supper, campers were given a list of items to find in the scavenger hunt through the he woods The two groups raced in collecting all of the items. Items were found in record time this year. Between all of the activities, there was a lot of bug collecting and water balloon attacks taking place.

The boys then enjoyed some free time while the girls decorated the Koop Center for the Big Beach Party Bash that was to take place Saturday evening. Everyone came dressed in beach party attire to enjoy games, contests and dancing before the midnight swim. The beach party was then topped off with a wiener and marshmallow roast.

Our final day at camp included a devotional service on the hill, group pictures and an autograph party. After a quick snack, campers jumped in the pool for some Aqua Fest Games. We had races through the pool with a beach ball, little plastic boats, big straw hats and little pails. Our final meal at camp was followed with packing up and cleaning the cabins. The time had come to say good-bye to Camp Lone Star.

I would like to thank Howard, Melanie and David for joining us at camp We really enjoyed having you as part of our group. I would especially like to thank Betty and Jill for serving as leaders and being such a tremendous help to me at camp. We survived!

The final thanks go to the SPJST organization for providing the funds for these children to be able to participate in camp. This is an experience that these children will treasure for a lifetime.

Youth Club member compliments State Youth Director Dear Readers, Several members of the Snook SPJST Youth Club participated in State Youth Achievement Day and Royalty on August 7 and 8. I was one of those lucky ones. Jason Gaas and I represented District One in the State Royalty competition. Jason did a wonderful job and we had a great time.

Ms. Melanie did a great job!

Several members of our club participated in talent and craft. I participated in the Pictorial Arts category and won second place. I was very happy!

State YAD was a lot of fun and I hope to be back next year!

Texans set to observe Czech Heritage Month The Texas Czech Heritage Month, October 1 through 31, 1999 is rapidly approaching. There is a need to start tuning up for this event! All Czech Texans are encouraged to participate in this month-long commemorate.

As we are celebrating, we are remembering the past and our ancestors who were proud enough to stand up for what they believed in and loved. The purpose of this event is to preserve and promote the many contributions made

by Czech immigrants and Czech Texans. Also we will be paying a tribute to our ancestors.

The Legislature of Texas passed a resolution, signed by Governor George W. Bush designating the month of October to be celebrated annually as "Texas Czech Heritage Month".

The idea for the resolution was introduced by Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka of La Grange. The TravisWilliamson Czech Heritage Society, during presidency of Dr. Dorothy Bohac, was instrumental in having the resolution passed.

The month of October was chosen because of its historical significance— Czechoslovakian Independence was proclaimed on October 28, 1918.

This special month of October of each year will give us an opportunity to remember and commemorate our rich Czech heritage. Here are a few ideas: 4Ir

Speak with school superintendent and principals informing them of Czech Heritage Month. Suggest that aspects of Czech Culture be included in the curriculum.

(or Paint or sketch posters or cut out illustrations of the Czech Republic and display them in classrooms, halls, libraries, downtown shops, malls and bulletin boards Display the Czech Republic flag with the U.S.A. and Texas flags whenever possible.

Ask students to write article about the Czech Republic, "What Czech Heritage Means to Me," or about Czech-Americans living in Texas Teach students greetings in Czech:
