Members and friends invited to enjoy SPJST royalty, YAO August 7-8 in Temple SPJST members and friends are cordially invited to come out and enjoy the 1999 SPJST State Royalty and YouthAchievement Day competi tion on Saturday and Sunday, August 7 and 8 at the Frank W. Mayhorn Convention Center in Temple. More than 250 young people will participate in the two-day grand finale of the summer-long district contests. The contests cover talent, speech and handicrafts. State Royalty Competition Saturday, August 7 On Saturday, August 7, the 19981999 SPJST State King Jonathan Haag and State Duke Chase Jaroszewski, both of Lodge 185, New Braunfels and State Queen Jennifer Block and State Duchess Rachel Schwartz, both of Lodge 160, San Angelo, will preside over the SPJST Royalty Competition which begins at 4 p.m. First place king and queen winners from the seven SPJST districts across the state will compete for the titles of 1999-2000 SPJS1' State King and State Queen. . The kind and queen are selected on the basis of a prepared speech during which they are scored on content, delivery and overall poise. King and queen candidates are high school-aged SPJST youth club members. The 1999 - 2000 State King and Queen will represent the SPJST at events across Texas, including West Fest, the Temple Christmas parade, Texas Fraternal Congress and the crowning of the 2000 - 2001 SPJST State King and Queen. At 6 p.m., dinner will be available. The grand march begins at 7 p.m., fol lowed by a free dance with music by MorrisCode until 10 p.m. MorrisCode features country/western, rock and roll, light jazz, tejano and original music. State Youth Achievement Day Sunday, August 8 On Sunday, August 8, the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day begins with the opening ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will also be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. SPJST youth who received first place honors at their district competi tions across the state earlier this sum mer will compete at the state level in (Continued on page JO.)

Czech Heritage Center fund raiser slated for August 27 Many SPJST members in the Greater Houston area support the Czech Cultural Center in Houston and its efforts to build a permanent facility dedicated to celebrating Czech culture in Texas and the United States. To generate support for the facilitiy, the Czech Cultural Center in Houston hosts its Fourth Annual Fund Raiser Gala and Silent Auction on Friday, August 27, 1999 at the Warwick Park Plaza Hotel. The theme for the evening is Building the Future, Remembering the Past: "A Night of Czech Music, Dinner and Dance." The evening begins with a reception and book signing and silent auction commencing at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. and dancing. Major prizes to be awarded include a trip for two to Prague, a hand-cut lead crystal 22-inch chandelier and a collec table porcelain 24K gold tea set. (The prize drawing is being underwritten by The Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas-KJZT, Queen of Peace, The Guardian Angels and Our Lady of Perpetual Help societies.) The honorary emcee for the evening is Kathie Turner, former mete orologist with Channel 11 KHOU-TV with special guest Captain Eugene Ceman U.S.N. (ret) Astronaut, who will personally autograph his recently published book, "The Last Man on the Moon. (Books are available at a discount prior to the event at the Czech Cultural Center Market Place, Northwest Mall, Houston.) Honorary Czech Consul Raymond J. Snokhous and Co-Chair Arthur M. Jansa, M.D. are leading the $4.5 mil lion Czech Cultural Center Houston Capital Campaign. The dinner is to be prepared under the watchful eye of well-known Czech master chef, Rene Langer. Entertainment by Eva Jarolim on a Czech-made grand Petrof piano followed by the big band sound of Gus Lindemann Orchestra. All proceeds benefit the Center's Development Fund to build a perma nent facility located in Houston. (Continued on page 7.)
