The Alaska Polka Cruise, which was sponsored by the Vrazels' Polka Band aboard the cruise ship Norwegian Wind, included ports of call in Vancouver, British Columbia, Glacier Bay, Haines, Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway. Let's Plan to Win in 2001 2001 Legislative Effort As you may recall, the 1999 intrafraternal effort to seek legislative relief from property taxes for local lodges fell short of its mark: There will riot be a statewide referendum vote in November seeking a constitutional amendment authorizing property tax exemptions for our local lodges. Our next opportunity to have the referendum appear on the ballot will be in the year 2001.

That may seem a long way off; however, we can't delay until the 77th Texas Legislature convenes in 2001 to start addressing the issue and expect to achieve meaningful results.

Let's talk this thing up and get the ball rolling now while time is on our side.

All of the frater nal benefit societies that conduct business in Texas will participate in the Texas Fraternal Congress which takes place in Houston, October 22 through 24. As a prudent and proactive move, the SPJST and its sister fraternals would do well to devote such time as necessary to establish a unified and clearly defined plan of action, including accountabilities and timetables for achieving the ad valorem property tax exemption in 2001.

In turn, it would be incumbent upon fraternal management to convey these action plans to local lodge leaders and local opinion leaders - including the media - to inform them of the effort and then to rally their active support.

Achieving legislative relief from the ad valorem tax is possible. Our odds for achieving success will improve dramatically with thoughtful planning, effective communication and diligent action. Repealing and/or lessening the burden of property taxes on fraternal properties would generate immediate and long-term benefits for our local lodges. The countless hours of effort that currently go into raising money "to pay the taxes," in many lodges could be redirected to efforts that directly improve the quality of life for our members and the communities in which they live, work and play. Please, think about that could mean in your

area. We don't have to feel intimidated and powerless when it comes to dealing with the system. Knowledge is power. By informing ourselves of the issues, we can empower ourselves and change things for the better.

Czech Pilgrimage (Continued from page 1.

First Impressions Arriving in Prague, the first priority was clearing customs. Upon leaving the airport, I encountered a sea of red tile roofs.

Prague is known as "The City of a Hundred Spires." After touring the city, I can say the phrase is definitely correct. There is so much to see: The Old Town Square with the Astronomical Clock Tower; New Town; the Charles Bridge with its artists and musicians; the Presidential Palace; the one-room houses on the Golden Road; the Jewish Ghetto and Cemetery; the centuries-old churches; the many museums; and the National Music and Dance Theater, where the bright colors of the Czech krojs complement polkas and waltzes.

Lidice The second stop was the city of Lidice, where I saw archival film taken from Nazi files. During World War II, Nazis swore to wipe Lidice off the face of the earth becasue Reinhart Heydrich, a Nazi offical was killed in Praha. One hundred seventy-two males from the age of 15 and up were shot. The women and children were sent to concentration camps. The town was completely destroyed. Not a stone

was left standing and even the roads leading into the city were destroyed.

At the end of World War II, of the 483 Lidice inhabitants, only 17 women and five children lived. To this day, some of them still live in the "new" Lidice built near the site of the original township which remains a memorial to the memory of the heroic Czech revolutionary movement. Truly, it made me proud.

Karlovy Vary The beautiful city of Karlovy Vary lies in a basin surrounded by mountains. It is known as "The City of Kings" and deservedly so, as it was founded by Emperor and Czech King Charles IV. The town rests on 12 thermal mineral springs and is one of the world's most famous spa cities. In addition to its 60,000-plus inhabitants, Karlovy Vary annually attracts more than 85,000 spa visitors and 250,000 tourists. Numerous rulers have granted Karlovy Vary the right of "salva guardia" or the "right of sanctuary" and for this reason, it was not bombed during World War II. The beautiful Colonnade along The beautiful Tepla River runs through the main part of Karlovy Vary. In walking past the Colonnade and beside the river, I recalled that here also walked Beethoven, Chopin, Dvorak, Brahms and many others. Free enterprise is healthy and well in this city. Czech Pilgrimage (Continued from page 3.) porcelain are featured items in many stores. Relaxing in the central park, one can observe visitors from every corner of the world.

Knowing several families in the small mountain town of Nejdek north of Karlovy Vary, I took the train up to spend a few days. Anna and Frank Hrachovec have a lovely home on the side of a mountain in the village of Sucha, a suburb of Nejdek. Nothing takes the place of sitting under one of their trees, looking out over the area below and enjoying the peace and beauty of this area. Frank says the best coffee comes from the water of a small natural spring in Prameny, a few miles up the road — so we took off by car to fill our bottle from this spring. I must say that he was right. The coffee was great.

A Little Bit of Scotland?

I was amazed to learn that not too far from the German border lies the town of Domazlice which is known as the "Scotland of the Czech Republic."

Here, a version of the bagpipe is played and the Czech kroj worn here by the men and women is much different than the rest of the country.

Domazlice is a very old and unique town which sits at the edge of a forest.

Passing through the city gate, one

enters the main square. On both sides, are shops and on the right is a church with a very tall bell tower. Most of the shops appear untouched for the last 40 years.

This particular day in June was evidently the day made for marriages!

Back home in Ennis, when there is a Czech wedding, the bridal couple departs in a decorated car.

In Domazlice, I found that the custom is alive and well. On the day we were there, there were five weddings in town. I had the opportunity to talk with some of the families and complimented one of the brides on her stylish dress. In the Czech Republic, she explained, one has the option of buying a dress or renting one, which is what she had done. In spite of that, her father said that the wedding was quite expensive. Reception attendance is often kept to a minimum with only immediate family members invited.

Picture-Perfect Telc My next stop was the city of Telc with its picture-perfect town square.

To really appreciate the city, you have to see it and its unique shops painted in soft pastel shades. They look like tiny porcelain buildings bordering the square with its large fountain surrounded by a garden of flowers. No automobiles are allowed in the square. As a result, people stroll in all directions, visiting, shopping or just sitting on benches and people-watching.

Upon arrivin g_ in the Moravian region of the Czech Republic, I was met by Steavy Jakubik of Ennis and together we traveled the roads of our grandparents. Steavy's family comes from the southern part of the country.

We were fortunate in that we were able to stay with Bretislav and Marcella Jakubik and their two daughters in Zlechov. They allowed us to make this our home base as we set off to see the towns and villages we had heard so much about.

Everyone has to see the huge cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Czech Saints Methodius and Cyril in Velehrad. This was our first stop and a really breathtaking experience.

No picture can do justice to the interior of this cathedral. The statuary, the artwork on the ceiling, columns and walls — not to mention the immense size of the cathedral — took our breath away.

It was our pleasure and an honor for our lodge to host this event and it appeared that everyone enjoyed the day.

There were many beautiful projects that various age groups had on display of what the youth from other lodges had entered in different categories. The talents presented, both individual and group, were great. A big thanks to all who participated in any way.

All the SPJST youth are winners and it had to be very hard for all the judges, whether arts and crafts or talent. Thanks so very much to all the judges, which were to numerous to mention, in helping out. However, I do want to at least recognize those individuals that judged the talent. Thanks to Julie Urbansovsky and Barbara Kostecka from West, Texas and to Amy Robinson from Waco, Texas.

I just want to recognize our own youth for all of their accomplishments here. I could never remember everyone throughout the district by name, but congratulations from all of us to you.

All of you did a great job in whatever categories you entered and lots of you are looking forward to going to State YAD in Temple.

I guess I may be a little partial to my grandchild, but let me congratulate him first because my husband and I are very proud of him as this is his first time at entering anything. 66, Waco readies for July 18 meeting and rally Lodge

Waco Lodge 66 will have its regular meting on July 18at 2:30 p.m. at Linden Hall in Em Mott.

In addition, a membership rally with Home Office representatives will be held. A fun and educational experience is awaiting those who attend. The afternoon is entitled "The Power and the Promise." Members are encouraged to bring a guest.

Desserts and drinks will be provided. Members are asked to bring sandwiches.

Before the June meeting on Father's Day, June 20, the fathers were honored with a very delicious dinner served by the ladies with lots of good food, especially the baked turkey done by Sister Jill Sijansky and the dressing made by Sister Lera Nemecek and their helpers.

Great job, ladies! For those who did not attend, you really missed out on the delicious food. Make sure to come next time.

After the dinner, President Jerry Sijansky called the meeting to order.

The minutes of the May meeting were read by Secretary Helen Pavelka and the financial report was given by Treasurer Milly Elzner; both were approved.

Lodge Activities Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner started his report by recognizing Sister Edna Voldan for her volunteer work. She brought 11 lap robes to be given to nursing homes.

A surprised Brother Frank Sijansky was awarded the Kentucky Colonel citation for his volunteer work.

Brother Elzner also said it has been a busy week hosting the Melodion Band dance and social for them, going to the

city council to have the mayor proclaim Flag Day and helping with ice cream social for Sokol gymnasts.

Coming up, there will possibly Czech language classes in the fall. More information will be coming in the future on this. Also scheduled is a dance and prize drawing. On October 31, we will be commemorating Czech Heritage Week. More details on this when they are available. Watch the Vestnik for these functions and information on them.

President Sijansky talked about the Texas Czech Cultural Heritage Center in La Grange and the fact that we should all support it.

There were three new members accepted into membership: Dylan Matthew Janota, Heidi Ann Spangler, Jonathon Jacob White and Jodi Lynn Hensley took new insurance. Welcome to Lodge 79.

The $50 monthly donation was approved to be given to Huntington's Disease. This donaton was for June.

Dear Readers, Lodge 84, Annual Princess Ball will be held on Saturday, August 21, 1999.

This year's King and Queen will mark the close of the century with bright new beginnings of the millennium.

87, Temple reports on June meeting Lodge

SPJST Lodge 87 held its last meeting on Tuesday, June 8, 1999. The men of the lodge expressed their appreciation for the meal prepared in honor of Father's Day before the meeting was called to order. After the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for our departed members, the minutes for our May meeting were read and approved, as was Treasurer Daryl Entrop's financial report.

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Thelma Groppell announced our lone June birthday and we wished Philip Troy all the best, even though he was not able to be present. She again reminded us to attend the Home Office Flay Day Celebration on June 14.

Brother Sid Kacir announced an upcoming meeting of an organization relevant to SPJST members. The July 10 gathering of the Czech Education Foundation where they are hoping to raise money for a Czech scholarship at Texas A&M. Lad Zatopek again gave an update on the state of our plumbing repairs.

We are thinking of raising extra money by establishing a pool to guess when they will actually be completed! In a further review of old business, we reminded everyone to donate their age in pennies to the scholarship jar and discussed other creative way to support the SPJST 100 Pennies Drive.

Our next meeting is July 13. We will have watermelon and whatever other snacks each family supplies.

Lodge 92, Fort Worth schedules all-day Czech Heritage Day September 18 Dear Members and Friends, One half of the year is gone, but some of it was good and some bad.

There were some deaths and some sickness; the ones that were sick, we hope all are well or feeling better.

We hope that there will not be any damages due to fireworks. Several cities have professionals that set up beautiful fireworks. I am sure the SPJST lodges will be having picnics and things at the lodges so plan to attend. There is always plenty of good food of all kinds.

It is sad when we do not get the Vestnik each week, but two times a year it is not printed so that is the reason you did not get it the week of the 23rd, but you will get the news this week.

The Saint Paul Catholic Church in Fort Worth had their annual Polka Mass with a dinner and dance. This was very nice and the Praha Boys really played lots of good Czech music and

all was enjoyed. We hope they will return to our lodge again soon.

Bands Scheduled for Czech Heritage Day Gordon Hubenak, Chairperson for Czech Heritage Day, announced how things were about ready so let's plan on a full day of good times with food and dances by two great bands. Jodie Mikula and David Slovak's Czech and Then Some will play polka and waltz music as well as the fun dances. The date of the all-day Czech Heritage Day will be Saturday, September 18.

Our July meeting will be on the 11th starting at 2 p.m. Try to be present so you can help plan activities at the lodge.

Hope this is not late, but July 18, Frank Dirba's Granger Polka Boys from Granger, Texas will be playing from 3 to 7 p.m.; we hope for a large

crowd. We always enjoy having friends from other lodges and try to show them a good time. Country and western music will be provided by Gary Lee on August 1 from 3 to 7 p.m.

Lodge 97, Placedo honors members at June social Lodge 97, Placedo held its June social and meeting on Sunday, June 27 at 12 noon at the Victoria County Electric Co-op Building. This social honored the new members and 50-year members. A fried chicken dinner was enjoyed by approximately 45 members.

President Yvonne Garrett called the meeting to order. She introduced Brother Will Sparks, new sales representative for our lodge. Brother Allan Sklar made the motion to accept Will as a salesperson, seconded by Gay Revel.

The motion was passed for the new sales representative.

District Six Director Matt Vanek and President Yvonne Garrett presented 50year pins to the honorees, Darrell Sklar of Edna and Rosa Lee Wyatt of Port Lavaca. Also honored was Youth Leader Carrie Delling who received a certificate of appreciation of Leaders-InTraining.

Our special guest was Brother Gene McBride from Tempe. He gave an informative speech on various insurance policies now available through enrolling 150 and 200 new members. Field Representative Jim Wiest received a field award from the Home Office for outstanding sales. Salesman Charles Garrett was also presented an award for FIC of the Year from the Home Office for outstanding insurance sales.

155, Austin plans July 18 meeting, picnic Lodge

Calling all Lodge 155 members and guests to our annual picnic at Deer Creek Ranch on Sunday, July 18 at 2 p.m. Members are reminded to bring salads and/or desserts and lawn chairs. Also bring along bathing suits and towels for those who choose to enjoy swimming in the clean, refreshing lake. No mosquito repellent is necessary because a constant, cool breeze keeps the mosquitoes away. Games and entertainment will be provided. Let's have a great turnout for this fun event!

Recent Lodge Member News Doris Boriski's granddaughter, Leah, with her husband and daughter, are moving soon to Tennessee. On June 1 and 22 respectively, Doris' husband and lodge Vice President, Clarence, underwent cataract surgery in both eyes.

On June 13, Treasurer John Hejl went to the Hejl family reunion in Seaton. Then on June 22, he, too,

had cataract surgery in one eye.

Alice and Ginny Prasatik were both attired in authentic Czech costumes on May 23 for the "fun" raiser (to help raise funds to build the Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center) in La Grange. Both women were photofeatured in Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center's May/June publication of Nas Cesky Zivot (Our Czech Life). Clarence and Doris Boriski were also present at this most enjoyable and well attended event. Charles and Mina Sponberg had been in La Grange the day before to tour the site of our future Czech cultural center so they missed all the festivities.

Ginny Prasatik, Secretary, played with the Central Texas Accordion Association orchestra on June 15 at the annual "free-for-all" concert held at the Senior Activity Center - North. Despite the steady rain that evening, the large attendance was gratifying. This was Ginny's first time to play her accordion with the orchestra since she and her mother, Alice, were touring the Czech Republic this time last year. Alice, the Sponbergs and their dear friends, Horace and Cornelia Johnson, were all there to lend Ginny their moral support and to enjoy the program. Big-hearted Horace escorted strangers with his oversize umbrella from their cars to the building so no one would get drenched from the pouring rain.

The event was attended last year with the Port Lavaca lodge and the booths attracted both men and women. The games night is scheduled for September 30 so mark your calendars now to attend.

Can Recycling Members brought bags of aluminum cans for recycling to benefit the AdoptA-Pet Program. A panel of judges gave Allan Sklar, Jr. a colorful SPJST umbrella for contributing the most cans.

This is an on-going drive so keep collecting those cans!

FAC Donna Vanek, Dana Vanek and Dean Vanek gave a report on the youth camp which they attended at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. They wore their camp t-shirts and displayed some pictures of camp in picture frames that they had designed and made while attending camp. They are looking forward to many more years at Camp Lone Star.

Youth Leader Carrie Delling gave a report on youth activities and encouraged the parents to get the youth involved.

Services for Alfred L. Klusacek, 52, of Moody were at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple with the Reverend John Hogan officiating.

He was born in Temple to Alfred Klusacek and Martha Kotrla Klusacek.

He married Ginger Bradley on July 20, 1968. She preceded him in death on February 18, 1982. He graduated from Temple High School and then served in the U.S. Army. Later, he was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 47 and the National Association of Letter Carrier, Branch 643 in Temple.

Survivors are one daughter, Tracy Klusacek of College Station; two sisters, Shirley Franklin of Temple and Patsy Koslovsky of Cyclone.

Services for Julia Chupik Spencer, 85, of Richmond, California and formerly of Temple were at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, 1999 at Seaton Cemetery with the Reverend John Bravenec officiating.

Mrs. Spencer died on Thursday, June 24 in a Richmond hospital.

She was born in Bell County to John and Albina Hejl Chupik. She married William E. Spencer on August 29, 1942 in San Leandro, California. She was employed by Capwell's Department Store for many years. She was of the Unity of the Brethren faith and a member of SPJST Lodge 47.

Survivors are her husband, William E. Spencer of Richmond; a brother, Johnny Chupik of Red Ranger; and two sisters, Ella Hejl of Temple and Libbie Bartek of Academy.

Millie Hanslik, 91, of Victoria, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999.

She was born July 19, 1907 in Wallace to the late Edward and Justina Barecky Petras. She was a homemaker and was a member of First English Lutheran Church. Survivors include a daughter, Dolly Mae Koehn of Victoria and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil A. Hanslik; son, Elroy Hanslik; four sisters and four brothers. Services were held Saturday, July 3 at Rosewood Funeral Chapels with the Reverend Bill Hassel officiating.

Burial was at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rosewood Funeral Chapels.

The officers and members of SPJST Lodge 1 at Fayetteville wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family of EDWARD (EDDIE) BACA of La Grange. Funeral services for Edward (Eddie) A. Baca, 88, of La Grange were held Saturday, June 5, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial following the Plum Catholic Cemetery. The Reverend Monsignor Harry Mazurkiewicz officiated.

Mr. Baca died Thursday, June 3 in Care Inn at La Grange.

Born June 17, 1910 in Fayetteville, he was the son of Joe 0. and Louise (Krenek) Baca. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Belota on May 8, 1946 in Plum A musician with the Baca Band where he began to play t age 13, he retired in 1956.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, American Legion, KJT, SPJST, Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society, He was an Army veteran of World War II having served in Sicily receiving the Purple Heart.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Baca of La Grange; one daughter, Rita Gabriel of Houston, as son and daughter in-law,

Remember that things get a little "wild" at camp so don't bring clothes or personal items that are expensive or valuable (like cologne, jewelry and $100 shoes). Bring jewelry and expensive items at your own risk. We will not be responsible for lost or damages items.

Camp is just around the corner and I am all excited abut the plans made for this year's camp The Leaders-InTraining (LITs) met on June 21st and have planned some fun parties and scavenger hunts. I have also made arrangements for an astronomer to come out on Tuesday night with his telescope to doe some star gazing. The Challenge Courseand a trip to the movies is also planned.

Check in time for camp is between 10 and 11 a.m. on Monday, July 19th.

Closing ceremonies will be at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 22 with departure between 9:30 and 10 a.m.

Below is a list of items that you will need to bring to camp. We are planning two parties and costumes are optional. One party is a "Come as You Were" so dress like a baby or a little boy or girl. The other party is a "Come as You Will Be" so dress up for your future career. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes, so get creative. We will also leave the camp to go to the movies in Waco so bring along some spending money. Your ticket will be paid for, but you will need to bring money for snack bar items.

Items Needed for Camp • At least three changes of clothes (shorts/tee-shirts) • Tennis shoes • Swim suits (one for the pool and one for the river) • Beach towel • Twin sheets/pillow or sleeping bag • Towels/wash cloth • Personal items (toothbrush, soap, deodorant, etc.)

Three Camp activities finalized District

Dear District Three Youths, Plans for camp are in the process and I am looking forward to having a great turn out this year!

Camp will begin with your arriving at Camp Val Verde at 10:30 a.m. for registration and check-in on Friday July 23, 1999. There will be horseback riding, swimming, crafts, archery, challenge course and many other various exciting activities are being planned for the next three days—July 24, 25 and 26th. Our last day, July 26th, will be a short, sad day because lunch does come around rather fast. When we start seeing parents arriving around noon, we all know that camp is coming to a close. We all have too much fun at Val Verde and we wish that camp would be just a little longer.

Four Youth Achievement Day District

Dear Readers, District Four YAD was held June 19 at the St. Ambrose Church Hall in Wall. The quality of the talent shown by the youth in the talent and craft competition was exceptional once again. The judges stated many times that the entries were all so outstanding.

Congratulations to each of you who participated in YAD. My thanks go out to all of the parents who helped to make this day successful once again. Your assistance in getting your children to talent practices and encouraging them to complete their craft projects is appreciated. I especially appreciate Betty Schwartz and Jill Miller for all of their time that they devote to assisting me.

We had the honor of having President Howard Leshikar and State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny in attendance with us. It was great to have several District Four officers and many parents grandparents and friends to join us. It means a great deal to all of the youth to have your support.

Our judges included Julie Moorman and Andrea Martin for talent. Melanie Franklin, Brenda Kellermeier, Michelle Logback, Brenda Lehr, Ruby Braden and Donna Hammerton judged the crafts. Pam West served as the tabulator. They were a very conscientious group given the tough task of judging all of the beautiful and creative entries.

My sincere thanks to the youth of District Four for participating in YAD. I know that it takes a lot of your time to prepare your entries and I commend you for doing it. You are all very talented! Dear Vestnik Readers, District Two YAD was held at Flag Hall on June 27th. There were a lot of youth club members there to participate and many friends and family showing their support.

There were 11 queen contestants and three king contestants this year competing for the District Two title.

Group and individual talent proved to be exciting again this year. It is fun watching everyone. W e all , worked hard on our craft projects and you could sure tell it was tough competition this year. The day was a areat success. Thanks to Lodge 24 for their great hospitality.

Dear Readers, We had our July meeting on the 7th at the Elks Lodge in Temple. We had a great turn out and the hamburgers were delicious!

At our meeting, we discussed our summer trip which we will be taking on July 17 to Schilitterbahn. Everyone will meet at the Belton Park and ride at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning and followeach other to Schlitterbahn. If you need a ride, you can call Donna at 985-2658 and she can find you a ride. We have not yet decided what time we will return.

Parents and youth club members are paid for, but if you bring a friend, they will pay their own way. We hope everyone will join us on our summer trip.

Wharton County Czech Heritage Society report

PART The Wharton County Czech Heritage Society met on Tuesday, June st at the First Christian Church at 7 p.m. Fifty members were present.

Marie Matcek, President opened the meeting and members recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Edwin Schmidt played a tape of a traditional Czech song entitled, "My Homeland" instead of the Czech National Anthem.

President Matcek stated that the Wharton County Chapter awarded four scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Wharton County. They were Bart Bacak, Jordan Kubala, Jennifer Strnadel from El Campo and Lisa Reck from Louise.

A thank you note of appreciating was read from the Czech Cultural Center in La Grange. The Wharton County Chapter sent $500 towards the building of the center.

The members voted to have the county meetings on the first Tuesday every three months as it has been.

Eleven members from the chapter attended the state meeting in March which was held in San Antonio.

Colonel John Blaha, former astronaut, was the guest speaker. Colonel Blaha is of Czech decent. The next state meeting will be on July 17th at the K.C. Hall in Hallettsville. Doug Kubicek will be the guest speaker. The Wharton County Chapter will be hosts to the State Czech Heritage meeting on March 11th next year-2000.

Tickets Available for Fund Raiser Merrill Adamcik, Vice President, announced that there will be a fund raiser on Sunday, July 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The plates will be "to go" only from Staff's Catering Service.

The money will be used to give scholarships to Wharton County graduating seniors next year and to the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio.
