Ad Valorem Legislation Fails to Clear Finance Committee

It was a busy time in Austin for Texas legislators last week. Through Saturday, May 29, state lawmakers had agreed on a $506 million package of consumer and business tax breaks over the next two years. Elsewhere in the Capitol, negotiations continued on a larger tax cut — up to $1.5 billion in property tax relief that was part of a school funding bill.

In spite of these hefty tax breaks, the 1999 intrafraternal effort seeking legislative relief from property taxes fell short of its mark: There will not be a referendum vote in November seeking a constitutional amendment authorizing property tax exemptions for our local lodges.

Among the items considered earlier in the 76th Legislature, were two bills — SJR 40 and SB1515 — which outlined property tax exemptions for certain fraternal lodge properties.

Both pieces of legislation, which were authored by Senator Steve Ogden of College Station, were left "pending in committee" as of the May 14 deadline for the Senate to report all bills and resolutions from committee.

As such, they are considered "dead" for the session.

According to a source in Senator Ogden's office, "the votes were there" in the Finance Committee; however, Chairman Bill Ratliff of Mount Pleasant in East Texas opted not to bring the bills up for a vote, effectively shortstopping a vote by the full Senate; and, depending on the outcome, a vote by the House of Representatives which could have led to a spot on the November ballot.

While SJR 40 and SB 1515 failed to make it out of the Finance Committee, the fast-track legislative effort marks an important first step by the SPJST and its sister fraternals in pursuing legislative relief from property taxes for lodges acting in the fraternal interests of their communities. Thanks, again, to Senator Ogden, for his efforts in sponsoring the two bills and to our other friends in the Texas Legislature for their support and for acknowledging the good that our local lodges contribute to their communities.

Our next opportunity to get the referendum on the ballot will be in the year 2001. Let's learn all that we can from this experience and take such

steps as necessary to conduct an organized and vigorous ad valorem tax exemption campaign. In the meantime, there are several ways to get involved in the legislative process and make known your ideas known. The Citizen Handbook, published by the Texas Legislature, outlines several: Before Elections: 1. Meet the candidates in your district and ask them about issues of importance to you.

2. If the candidate merits your support, contribute your time and resources.

Before Legislative Session: 1. Phone the district office of your legislator(s) or write and express your opinion on issues or specific bills to be proposed.

2. Meet with the legislative staff.

During Legislative Session: 1. Meet with legislators in their offices and talk about a certain bill you either support or do

not support.

2. Attend hearings on specific bills and register and/or testify for or against bills.

3. Telephone, write and send telegrams to your legislators, when necessary, regarding legislation.

4. Keep the issue before the public with speeches and media coverage, if possible.

5. Meet or telephone the staff of the legislator or committee regarding legislation.

6. Check often on the progress of the bills of interest to you.

Between Legislative Sessions: 1. Invite the legislator to a local program in your area.

2. Form a coalition in your area and support issues of mutual concern.

3. If necessary, discuss with your legislator the possibility of the legislator sponsoring a bill reflecting an issue of importance to you. it'

State FAC encourages lodges to share solutions to issues facing local lodges Fratemals are facing many challenges in the coming century. Some of the questions facing fraternals are; How do we structure lodge meetings and fraternal events to gain a greater interest from the inactive membership and attract nonmembers? Should our lodge meetings be shorter to meet busy schedules, or would meetings which include interactive games, a structured social hour or entertainment and a meal for families have more appeal? How do we attract younger families who are strapped for time in their busy daily schedules to volunteer or get involved in their lodge? If we want to buy property and build a lodge, how do we get started? And, what are the best ways for us to meet our lodge expenses and still provide viable, user friendly members services and programs?

Are there answers to these many questions? Yes, there are. But the answers must come from detailed research and resource information, or from those who have learned through trial and error.

In the SPJST Society, we have new (baby) lodges, newly reorganized lodges, and new lodge officers who are searching for answers. You can use your expertise and knowledge to help these new lodges.

There are SPJST established lodges who have been through the fire, so to speak, and have had their mettle put to the test.

Here is your opportunity to benevolently mentor your brothers and sisters in lodges across Texas. If you would like to be a mentor lodge, please contact me and I will put you in touch with a lodge who would be very happy to receive your input.

Resource information your lodge could provide, could include: How your lodge pays taxes, deals with liquor licenses and liability, copies of rental contracts, successful fraternal and sales programs offered, incentives or other programs offered through your lodge, how you started a youth club, how you increased active members participation, charitable organizations that you have helped or raised money for, officer letter writing or e-mail pals and other information.

The regular meeting of the Supreme Lodge SPJST was called to order by Chairman of the Board Vanek at 8:30 a.m. with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Leonard D. Vanek - District VI, Chairman of the Board Robert Bayer - District VII The Supreme Lodge Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in memory of the deceased members. Vice President Mikeska was in Austin attending a legislative committee hearing concerning the Model Code and sales representative licensing proposed legislation. Chairman Vanek welcomed Honorary Directors Andrew Vavra and Willie E. Kohutek, and Editor Vanicek.

MINUTES—The minutes were reviewed page by page. On page 241, the first paragraph should read "it was decided by common consent that," On page 247, the first paragraph should read "donation drive" not "clean-up drive." Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Director Broz to accept the minutes with corrections. Motion carried unanimously.

OLD BUSINESS: SPJST CREDIT CARD—President Leshikar presented information that the credit card would be of benefit to SPJST by advertising the SPJST each time the card is used, a rebate would be made to the SPJST scholarship fund every time a purchase is charged on the card, and the card would be an incentive to buy insurance. The company that would be issuing the credit card would have to have a complete membership roster to solicit business. Since the SPJST does not release its membership roster, the credit cards cannot be offered by this company.

CEMETERY MARKERS—President Leshikar presented information from two granite companies about the cost and set up charges for a cemetery marker.

Director Krizan requested that a sample be presented to the Supreme Lodge. A decision was deferred until later in the meeting when a sample would be available. membership card. The card would be designed along the lines of:

There was a lengthy discussion concerning the membership card. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir to proceed with gathering more information about a membership card including a recommendation on the type of card and the cost of the cards.

AD VALOREM TAXES—President Leshikar reported there are five sponsors for the Ad Valorem Tax Bill in the Texas Legislature.

President Leshikar expressed the need to hire a legislative liaison to keep the SPJST info used as to when the Senate Finance Committee would be meeting and also when hearings on the bill would be held. President Leshikar also reported on his visits with other fraternals and with members of the legislature concerning the proposed bill. A lengthy discussion followed concerning the wording of the bill. The Senate Joint Resolution 40 and Senate Bill 1515 were compared.

The legislature or a committee can change any of the bills that are presently before the committee.

Recess was taken from 10:10 a.m. to 10:25 a.m.

The bill was written with a narrow definition of those being exempt from ad valorem taxes on the advice of legislative members and public officials. President Leshikar was directed to contact other non-profits that might encourage their members to vote in the November 1999 election. The last two weeks of April and first week of May all of the legislators will need to be contacted.

STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR—State Youth Director Zavodny's report was

4/VESTN K—Wednesday, June 2, 1999 reviewed. The Leader-In-Training camp in 1999 will be held at Peaceable Kingdom in Bell County.

The report from the Special Youth Committee meeting showed some of the brain storming ideas. One of the suggestions was to involve all of the youth.

YOUTH RULEBOOK—President Leshikar moved to change the royalty rules ,to the age a youth may begin participation when the youth becomes a freshman. The motion was seconded by Director Victorick and carried unanimously.

Director Bayer reported attending the Youth Workshop, where some of the speakers were the District Youth Counselors. The State Youth Director is stressing that the local lodge youth clubs make reports to their local lodges.

STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR—State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz's report was reviewed.

EMPLOYEES—There were discussions concerning job descriptions of employees and that the Home Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

MUSEUM REPORT--President Leshikar reported on the visitors to the museum during the first quarter of 1999. There were two large groups from outside of the Temple area to visit the museum.

MARCH OF DIMES—President Leshikar reported approximately 1,300 plates of barbecue sold on April 8. Over $6,000 was collected that day and will be presented to the March of Dimes.

Recess was taken from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Financial Secretary Mikulas introduced Bruce Bading a representative from IBM, who presented information on the need to upgrade the AS400.

SALES REPORT—Legal Advisor Kacir presented Vice President Mikeska's report. Legal Advisor Kacir presented the figures from the monthly insurance report. During 1999, there have been 293 applications received which totaled $12,793,500 and $6,827,000 has been issued.

NEW LODGES—Legal Advisor Kacir reported on the ten new lodges and the number of members each lodge has. Only two of these lodges are near having the required number of members to be chartered. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Hanus to extend for another 90 days for the Vice President's Department to work with these lodges. The motion carried unanimously.

ADVERTISING—Director Broz expressed a need for the new sales representative's pictures to be in local papers. There was a discussion about the money budgeted and ways the money could be used to put the SPJST name before more people. The officers are to present in writing at the next Supreme Lodge meeting some advertising ideas and possible costs.

STATE FIELD MANAGER—State Field Manager McBride's report was reviewed.

NEW PRODUCTS—Legal Advisor Kacir reviewed figures from Actuary John Agee showing the income statement by lines of business. Vice President Mikeska's report indicated the Insurance Department is researching a new plan of insurance that has an accelerated living benefit rider and the reduction of premiums on whole life or some type of term to age 100 riders.

INCENTIVE TRIPS—There will be a sales incentive trip for the top twenty sales representatives based on earned premiums as of May 31, 1999. The other incentive program is for members who recommend 25 new members or 25 new insurance certificates. The members who win have a choice of a three days, two nights trip to Las Vegas, or two days, two nights trip to Sea World or Six Flags.

If a member recommends 50 new members or 50 new insurance certificates, the member has a choice of two trips or cash options.

COMPUTERS—Legal Advisor Kacir reported for Vice President Mikeska that the new automated certificate issue process will begin as soon as the computer hardware is in place.

INTERNET—A website team consisting of Kathy Fritz, Team Leader; Susie Ernst; Barbara Rosenkranz; and Brian Vanicek have been appointed. The purpose of the team is to pursue the development and implementation of an SPJST website and submit a recommendation on the matter to the Supreme Lodge Officers.

LODGE COMPLIANCE—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported on the local lodges that have not submitted a copy of their 990/990T. This report is due to the IRS by May 15, 1999.

A listing of the local lodge, which had not submitted their 1999 officers, was provided to the directors. A second notice will be mailed to the lodges by April 30, 1999.

COOKBOOKS—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin reported there were only 514 cookbooks left from the January order. Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Director Bayer, to order another 2,000 cookbgoks. Motion carried unanimously.

Vice President Mikeska returned to the Supreme Lodge meeting from the licensing hearing in Austin.

LEGISLATION—Vice President Mikeska reported on the Model Code Bill, which includes the licensing regulation. The compromise to the Model Code bill includes: 1. The sales representatives may be licensed.

2. Any sales representatives who has been selling for SPJST can be grandfathered (licensed) to sell insurance for SPJST only. There is a limitation of sales representatives only being able to sell $35,000 of interest sensitive products unless the sales representative is licensed or has a FIC designation.

3. Part-time sales representatives would be exempt from having to be licensed. A part-time sales representative would be one who had written first year premiums of no more than $20,000 and could only sell $35,000 death benefits of Universal Life.

4. Home office personnel would be excluded. If this model code passes, Texas would be the only state exempting those with a FIC designation or $20,000 or less earned premiums from having to be licensed and accepting the FIC designation to allow unlimited sales of interest sensitive products.

TERM INSURANCE—Vice President Mikeska presented information on an age enhancement rider on the Mode Term insurance plan. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by President Leshikar to allow SPJST to carry up to $75,000 of liability if the insured exercise the age enhancement option. Motion carried unanimously.

VESTNIK—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the subscription list for the Vestnik now stands at 10,169. The weekly postage amounts to approximately $1,750 and $1,200 weekly for publishing the Vestnik.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported Henry L. S. Jezek, CPA will finish the audit no later than May 31, 1999. Mr. Jezek has been doing some of the work at his office.

TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported Tommy Brown, Examination Coordinator of the Texas Department of Insurance, informed SPJST will be audited by the Texas Department of Insurance for the years 1996, 1997, and 1998.

LODGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the final guidelines for the lodge incentive as follows: 1. Annuity certificates will count provided the certificate holder is uninsurable.

2. Only the target premium counts toward premiums remitted on Universal Life certificates.

3. Modified Whole Life certificates will not count towards the incentive program.

4. Certificates must be issued by December 30, 1999.

There was a discussion about adding two new categories with more certificates.

Director Krizan expressed a need for all lodges to have a minimum number of certificates that have to be sold. Director Klinkovsky moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska, to add two categories to the lodge incentive program. The requirements would be 100 new certificates for $3,000 award and 150 members for $4,000. Voting in favor were President Leshikar, Vice President Mikeska, Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, Legal Advisor Kacir, Director Victorick, Director Klinkovsky, Director Broz, Director Hanus, Director Vanek, and Director Bayer.

Voting against was Director Krizan. Motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar moved for the officers to come up with a plan to combine the lodge refund and incentive program and make the recommendation during the July meeting. Motion seconded by Director Krizan and carried unanimously.

COMPUTER—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the bid for new personal computers was awarded to CTWP and the bid for the Ethernet cable was awarded to StoneMedia, Inc. At this time, $24,775 has been awarded in bids. After January 1, 2000, IBM will no longer support the software for the AS 400 Model 200. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir to upgrade the computer to a 9406-170 from the AS400 Model 200. Motion carried unanimously. Financial Secretary Mikulas will be providing information on scanning records at the July meeting.

LOANS—Legal Advisor Kacir presented information on difficulties in obtaining papers after a loan closes and also problems with some title companies not following closing instructions. Legal Advisor Kacir reported on foreclosures and bankruptcies. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, if the bankruptcy court would agree to a lift stay on one mortgage loan to proceed with foreclosure. Motion carried unanimously.

Wednesday, June 2, 1999—VkSTNIK/5 EDITOR—Editor Vanicek reported the Vestnik can include up to 75 percent advertising in each issue and not exceed limitations as prescribed in the secondclass mailing permit.

Editor Vanicek presented information on having Richard Urbis perform at the Cultural Activities Center in Temple. There was a discussion as to how well Mr. Urbis had been received at his previous concert in Temple, whether or not any college or university had been contacted and whether or not he would play at the Sunday evening reception for the Convention.

Editor Vanicek presented recommendation Number 3 from the Publication Committee to purchase updated hardware and software for the Editor's office.

Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Krizan to proceed with the purchase of new updated hardware and software after obtaining two more bids and with consultation with Financial Secretary Mikulas, chairman of the Electronic Data Processing Committee.

Chairman Vanek welcomed Communication Assistant Katherine Smith to the meeting.

Editor Vanicek presented the recommendations of the Publication Committee: 1. That the office of the Editor, with the ratification of the Supreme Lodge, develop a Graphic Standards Manual to provide the SPJST with a recognizable and professional identity. In addition, the Publication Committee recommends that whenever possible, newsletters to be incorporated into the Vestnik to maximize communication.

After a discussion, Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, to accept the first recommendation of the Publication Committee and for the Editor to present a progress report on the graphic manual and redesigning the logo at the July Supreme Lodge meeting. The Editor's office is to complete this project without hiring any additional employees. Motion carried unanimously.

The Publication Committee recommends that a survey be taken asking members if they wish to continue receiving their Vestnik. Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Krizan for Financial Secretary Mikulas to make a presentation at the July meeting on his recommendation as to how to conduct the survey. That the Supreme Lodge take such steps as necessary to support the development of an SPJST "online" magazine and archive, in line with the January 1999 Supreme Lodge action to establish a presence on the Internet.

This online effort, of course, is not meant to replace the Vestnik, but to supplement it and to help ensure that the SPJST remains attentive to the needs of its members and prospective members. In addition, Publication Committee requests that the Internet Development Team and the Supreme Lodge take such steps as necessary to make. Internet access available in each Home Office Department and incorporate the following elements into an SPJST home page.

Information similar as to what was included in the recent SPJST Insurance, Annuities and Mortgage Lending Extra.

An on-line page that enables a user to plug in their personal information and receive an insurance quote from a local lodge sales representative.. A variation of this idea is available from some old-line insurance providers.

As stated by NFCA, the purpose is to recognize a local/society member for outstanding fraternal (lodge/community) efforts made during the year of the nomination; likewise, there appears to be no prohibition from an individual being named: "Fraternalist of the Year" by a lodge/society more than once.

Regarding the selection process, consider the merits of cross judging "Fraternalist of the Year" nominees —working with another distant fraternal society and evaluating each other's "Fraternalist of the Year" nominees, thereby eliminating perceptions of favoritism.

The Supreme Lodge acknowledged the recommendation.

The Publication Committee recommends that the SPJST establish a 501-c (3) non-profit, tax-deductible organization within the framework of the SPJST. Such an entity would be able to, receive tax-deductible donations, charitable bequests and apply for various grants to fund a variety of memberoriented projects, including, but not limited to an SPJST Family Recreation Center, Endowed Scholarship Program or other worthwhile member-oriented benefits.

The Supreme Lodge acknowledged the recommendation.

The Publication Committee recommends, at the request of the Supreme Lodge chairman, that color be used in the Vestnik on a Bi-weekly basis.

President Leshikar moved, seconded by. Director Hanus to accept the recommendation for color to be used bi-weekly in the Vestnik. The motion carried unanimously.

After reviewing the Editor's report and activity sheet for 1998, the Publication Committee recommends a raise for the editor. The recommendation was referred to the Finance Committee.

The Supreme Lodge reiterated the following guidelines that the meetings are open; the meeting cannot be taped; a third person cannot take notes; and the Supreme Lodge has to agree on each individual basis for someone to make a presentation before the body.

DISTRICT ONE—Director Victorick reported on the increased mortgage loans in District One. He thanked Legal Advisor Kacir and State Field Representative Gatewood for attending the District One Spring Meeting.

DISTRICT TWO—Director Klinkovsky reported on some members requesting microphones be available at the workshop and for it to be held in the same style as the SPJST Conventions.

DISTRICT THREE Director Krizan reported Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga is sponsoring a golf tournament April 18, and was successful in signing up more teams than anticipated. The lodge is continuing to be involved in the community and to develop plans for a lodge building. Lodge 54, West continues to be active and their lodge president recently pledged to establish a new youth club, and will honor their 50-year members at a May 23 ceremony.

Lodge 110, Kaufman and Lodge 205, Terrell continue to work together to establish a new lodge and have added a new sales representative.

Lodge 195, Cleburne has a new sales representative being trained and Lodge 35, Elk with its new officers continues to work on new projects and reports increased attendance at its meeting.

Director Krizan recognized Brother Pokladnik for his past accomplishments and contributions to our Society asked the Supreme Lodge to keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers during his time of illness.

There was a discussion concerning the local lodge incentive program. A committee of the officers and Director Krizan and Director Klinkovsky were appointed to present ideas for the incentive program. President Leshikar is in charge of the committee.

Director Krizan again requested that endowed and memorial scholarship presentations be recognized and that family members be involved in the presentation if they desire.

DISTRICT FOUR—Director Broz reported on the search for sales representatives in the Lubbock, Metcalf, Seymour, Wichita Falls, Lamesa and Tahoka areas.

He reported on a new sales representative in Lodge 76-, Wichita Falls and also invited everyone to the District Four Spring Meeting.

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, June 2, 1999 Recess was taken from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

DISTRICT FIVE—Director Hanus reported on presiding at funeral services for several SPJST members. He attended a meeting at Lodge 81, Needville and visited members at the SPJST Rest Home. He thanked State Field Manager McBride and State Field representative Wiest for the job they did at the sales representative banquet.

DISTRICT SEVEN—Director Bayer reported on the good, presentation State Field Manager McBride, State Youth Director Zavodny and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Rosenkranz presented at the Lodge 202, Jourdanton.

Lodge 161, La Parita-Jourdanton and Lodge 202, Jourdanton are each sponsoring a little league baseball team. Director Bayer has tried to find the location of Lodge 26, Skidmore minutes. He had several inquires of mortgage loans as a result of advertising.

DISTRICT SIX—Director Vanek installed officers at Lodge 151, Wharton and attended Lodge 97, Placedo's Easter hunt. He thanked. Legal Advisor Kacir for attending the District Six meeting. Lodge 8, Weimer has a new sales representative. Legal Advisor Kacir moved, seconded by Director Krizan to authorize a director to spend up to $100 on inactive or dormant lodges to help activate a lodge. Motion passed unanimously.

The Supreme Lodge went into executive session to review the executive minutes of the last meeting. Director Bayer moved, seconded by Director Broz to approve the executive minutes with corrections.

Under I. Termination; the new contract would read, "This contract shall be valid for two years and automatically renews for an additional two years but may be terminated by either party with or without cause, by giving a 30-days written notice by certified or registered mail to the other party, addressed to the last known address.

Such termination shall not waive or release any obligation of either party existing hereunder at time of termination." Motion passed unanimously.

NFCA—Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by President Leshikar to reconsider the SPJST assessment of payment to the NFCA because of the NFCA's efforts on our behalf for the Model Code. Director Krizan commended Vice President Mikeska and President Leshikar for their efforts towards passing of a favorable licensing section of the Model Code. After further discussion, Vice President Mikeska moved, seconded by Director Krizan to pay SPJST's assessment to the NFCA not to exceed $5,000 upon the adoption and passing of the Model Code with a favorable licensing section protecting SPJST and other fraternals. Motion carried unanimously.

NEW BUSINESS: CEMETERY MARKER—President Leshikar presented a cemetery marker from another organization. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir to have a mold for the cemetery marker made and have available for the July Supreme Lodge meeting. The cost is not to exceed $150. Motion carried unanimously.

SCHOLARSHIPS—President Leshikar reported on the research he had done concerning the SPJST scholarships for directors. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Broz for the officers to research the IRS code as to whether or not SPJST scholarships can be awarded to a director's grandchild. Motion carried unanimously.

DELINQUENCIES—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin presented a list of real estate loans that were 90 days or more past due. There were twelve loans in bankruptcy/foreclosure/tax suit; two loans on a workout plan and three loans do not fit in any category. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas to approve the recommendations for the delinquencies.

Motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Vice President Mikeska to set the loss reserve for mortgage loans at $6,000. Motion carried unanimously.

UNIVERSAL LIFE—There was a discussion concerning the interest rate of the Universal Life Certificates. Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Krizan for the interest rate of the Universal Life product to remain at 6.75% through July 31, 1999. Motion carried unanimously.

CONVENTION—President Leshikar presented a request from Lodge 47, Seaton to consider them for a function on the free evening of the Convention. It was decided by common consent for the President to visit with local lodges in the Temple area to see if any lodge would be interested in doing the Convention Booklets, providing runners, etc. This information would be reported at the next Supreme Lodge meeting.

ANNUITIES—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Klinkovsky for Annuity I's to remain at 5% through July 31, 1999. Motion carried unanimously.

WORKSHOP—President Leshikar presented a request from Lodge 80, Holland to hold the workshop in 2000. Director Krizan presented a request from Lodge 25, Ennis to have the workshop. Director Krizan moved, seconded by Director Hanus to hold the 2000 local lodge officers' workshop and incentive banquet at Lodge 25, Ennis, since Lodge 80, Holland has held it previously and Lodge 25, Ennis has not held the functions before. Motion carried unanimously.

Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas for the interest rate of the Roth Annuity to remain at 6% through July 31, 1999.

STATE BARBECUE COOKOFF—President Leshikar presented information from Lodge 97, Placedo about having their barbecue cookoff being held in October, could be a state barbecue cook-off. A decision was deferred until more information became available.

INVESTMENTS—Secretary-Treasurer Anglin moved, seconded by Director Bayer to ratify the investments for the period from January 1, 1999 through March 31, 1999. Motion carried unanimously.

President Leshikar reported on accepting an invitation to a symposium in Minnesota from the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Science.

On April 13, SPJST officers and directors honored Supreme Lodge Vice President Leonard Mikeska with a dinner at Stagecoach Inn in Salado, acknowledging Mr. Mikeska's 40 years with the SPJST. To mark the occasion, Vice President Mikeska received a crystal eagle and $500 to mark the occasion. INCOME AND EXPENSES—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported on the income and expenses for the first three months of 1999. The income during this period increased by 8% and the expenses increased by 5%. Items on the comparison of income and expenses report were compared and explained.

BUDGET—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that the amount of income budgeted for the year is at 26% and the expenses are at 25%.

ANNUAL STATEMENT—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported he had shared the figures with the Finance Committee. The summary pages of the annual statement were reviewed and explained.

WORKSHOP—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported the expenses for the workshop and banquet held on February 28, 1998 were $59,752.13. The expenses for the workshop and banquet held on February 27, 1999 were $59,015.03.

ANNUITIES—Financial Secretary Mikulas reported there are 1,269 certificates in Annuity I with a value of $19,961,987.04. All of the certificates in Annuity I do not have a SPJST early withdrawal penalty. There are 1,286 certificates in Annuity II with a value of $27,039,196.92. There are 29 Roth IRA's that have a value of $219,842.25.

TEMPLE COLLEGE—Legal Advisor Kacir presented information that Temple College could provide a permanent display area for SPJST, provide training to employees and sales representatives and provide a meeting place as needed. By common consent it was decided the officers would meet with officials from Temple College and inquire about more details for possibly helping with funding of up to $10,000 per year for five years provided matching funds are committed.

DISTRICT ONE

Director Victorick was not present.

DISTRICT TWO—Director Klinkovsky expressed that he had enjoyed the meeting and that many good decisions were made to help in the progress of our membership growth.

DISTRICT THREE—Director Krizan moved that the Supreme Lodge reinstitute the following motion originally adopted in the July 1996 meeting: That for the next two years, the President and Vice President would work with the lodges that do not have a sales representative, do not have a functioning fraternal program, did not send delegates to the last convention, and that a written report be presented at every Supreme Lodge meeting denoting what progress has been made with each lodge.

Seconded by Legal Advisor Kacir, and passed unanimously.

Director Krizan requested consideration and information for the next meeting concerning pre-qualification of the borrower for mortgage loan applications and also study on the feasibility of doing interim financing on mortgage loans. He inquired about the possibility of issuing smaller policies for other classes of insurance other than 20 Years Pay with the amount of premium being the determining factor for cost effectiveness. This would mainly benefit seniors who desire membership benefits. He expressed thanks from Lodge 25-Ennis, for allowing them to host the workshop and banquet in 2000.

Director Krizan questioned as to whether directors are considered the same as employees and should the directors receive a 1099R or a W2 form for their compensation. Director Krizan stressed the need for information from the Home Office to be accurate as possible. He also requested a report on the progress made on explaining the letter from the A. M. Best reporting service regarding our rating and how it can be improved in the future. He then explained the importance of having regular scheduled staff meetings at least once a month and officers meeting weekly. In implementing action taken at the last Supreme Lodge meeting.

Director Krizan presented a suggestion box on behalf of the Directors to Chairman Vanek. The suggestion box was given to President Leshikar to select a central location for its placement.

DISTRICT FOUR—Director Broz stressed a need for the officers to be members of service clubs. He invited everyone to the District Four Spring Meeting.

DISTRICT FIVE—Director Hanus requested everyone to begin publicizing the necessity to vote on November 2, 1999.

DISTRICT SIX—Chairman Vanek reported the Sales Representative Banquet would be April 25, and sales representative classes would be the last week in April. Calendar pictures will be taken during the July meeting.

The next Supreme Lodge meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. on July 13, 1999.

Around the State District Seven presents minutes of Spring Meeting hosted by Lodge 133, San Antonio The District Seven Spring Meeting was hosted by Lodge 133, San Antonio on April 18, 1999.

The meeting was called to order by President Frances McDonald. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lodge 133 President Jarolyn Popp. Welcome was given by Popp.

First Vice President Glen Pruski read the names of the deceased members and silence was observed.

Lodges represented were: 31Yoakum, 79-Corpus Christi, 107Floresville, 117-Robstown, 133-San Antonio, 161-La Parita-Jourdanton, 185-New Braunfels, 202-Jourdanton.

Appointed to the auditing committee were Polly Bayer, Connie Jo Purchis and Katherine Marek.

Nominating committee members appointed were William Pavliske, Wendy Pruski and Ernest Spacek.

The motion was made and passed to dispense with reading of minutes since they were published earlier in the Vestnik.

Secretary Bettie House read the motion passed by the District Officers at their pre-planning meeting which stated the district would reimburse the hosting lodge $1 per plate.

Fifty-year members were recognized. Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin presented the financial status of the SPJST and presented checks to the district on behalf of the Supreme Lodge.

Treasurer Liz Bielefeld gave the financial report.

Director Bob Bayer congratulated all sales representatives, Lodge 161 for the Silver Award and Lodge 79, 164 and 202 for the First Step Award and sales representatives who received awards for 1998. These individuals were: Jerry Elzner, Wendy Pruski, Linda Ramey and Jerry Sijansky.

District Field Representative Larry Wagner announced the quota for insurance sales is more than last year.

Wagner encouraged everyone to partic ipate in the membership drive now in progress.

District Youth Counselor Susan Bohnenberger presented the financial and activity reports of the youth.

Bohnenberger announced she is resigning after ten years of service.

State King Jonathon Haag recounted his many activities during the year.

Haag is a member of Lodge 185 New Braunfels.

Rest Home Director Eugene Hrncir reported on the nursing homes. Hrncir is retiring after 30 years of service. A new director will be selected at the District Fall Meeting.

First Vice President Glen Pruski announced the fraternalist nominees: Jerry Sijansky, Lodge 79, Thomas Novak, Lodge 107 and Milton Koch, Lodge 161.

Director Bob Bayer recognized the youth leaders and presented awards to: Lodge 107 - Roxanne Bertrand (2 years), Wendy Pruski, (4 years), Connie Jo Purchis (4 years), Liz Bielefeld (19 years); Lodge 161-Kathy Wagner (new); Lodge 185-April Haag (5 years), Susan Bohnenberger (10 years), Theresa Haag (12 years).

The motion was made and passed that the lodge hosting a district meeting have the date set within two months of the previous meeting to allow more time for the planning of the event.

Officers elected for 1999 are: President Frances McDonald First Vice President Glen Pruski Second Vice President Jerry Sijansky Secretary Bettie House Treasurer Melba Novosad District Youth Counselor Liz Bielefeld Assistant DYC Wendy Pruski The district accepted the offer of Lodge 161 President Ernest Spacek to host the District Family Fun Day. Auditing Committee reported the financial records were in order. The committee suggested combining the two youth funds into one fund. The motion was made and passed to combine them.

Door prizes brought by Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin and Director Bob Bayer were awarded.

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville and Fayette County Czech Heritage Society picnic June 13 The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge 1 and Fayette County Czech Heritage Society will have their annual combined picnic at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill (on south side of Highway 159 about three and one half miles east of Fayetteville) on June 13, 1999 starting at 11 a.m. Members are asked to bring a covered dish (vegetable or meat) and dessert. Everything else will be provided. This is always a nice outdoor outing for everyone, so bring your lawn chairs and fishing gear! Bring guests as they are always welcome.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported on the monthly bingo held for the residents of Steven's Convalescent Center. Members assisting were Jo Ann Matula, Mary Matula, Evelyn Sklar, Evelyn Holy and Elsie Mascheck. Get well cards were sent to Margaret Bucek and Mary Matula.

Family Day Set For August 29th

Due to the State Youth Achievement Day being on our annual Family Day this year, the members reconsidered and voted to change as requested the date from Sunday, August 8th to Sunday, August 29th at the Legion Hall.

President Siptak announced that youth club member, Elizabeth Wagner is a recipient of a $750 SPJST scholarship. Congratulations!

Evelyn Holy will be Kitchen Chairman for the District Six Youth Achievement Day to be held in Hallettsville in July 25th. Lodge members will assist.

Appreciation Banquet held for all 1998 Producing District Six Sales Representatives on Sunday, April 25th at Leo's Feed Lot in Victoria.

Attending from our lodge were Joe and Susan Siptak, Annie Vahalik and Patsy Zabransky. Unable to attend were Mary and Frank Matula.

Membership Rally Scheduled

A program at the next meeting will be presented by State Field Manager Gene McBride, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Barbara Rosenkranz and State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny. Members were asked to invite non-members to come and hear about SPJST and all it has to offer insurance, fraternal and youth activities.

Youth Leader Shirley Kalmus reported on the youth club activities. They are selling cookbooks and gave a donation to the Salvation Army. She presented certificates to the members who participated in the Tee-shirt Design Contest: Elizabeth Wagner, Elizabeth and Nicholas Vahalik, Adam and Joshua Siptak. Shirley also recognized the two youth club graduates, Elizabeth Wagner and John Richardson. They were thanked for their work and dedication to the youth club and their many achievements in SPJST. Good luck in your future endeavors!

The meeting adjourned followed by the youth club spelling out m-o-t-h-e-r and giving its meaning. The oldest mother present was Selma Graves and the youngest was Kendra Richardson.

Door Prize Winners

Door prize winners were: J.D. Campos, Jennifer Hessler, Viola Holly, Margaret Smotek, and Joshua Siptak.

Special Mother's day prizes went to Victoria Orsak, Evelyn Holy, Lillie Balusek, Elsie Mascheck and Mildred Vasek. In addition to the lodge prizes, door prizes were donated by Mildred Vasek and Annie Vahalik from Cookie Bouquet.

Present with a birthday in April, May or June were Helen Zabransky, Emma Jansky, Viola Holly, Nicholas Vahalik, Adam Siptak, David Wagner and John Richardson. Winner of the birthday cake baked by Elsie Mascheck was Helen Zabransky.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal of chili hot dogs with the trimmings and a pretty decorated cake honoring our two graduates, Elizabeth and John.

Our next meeting will be Sunday, June 13th at the Youth Center beginning at 2 p.m. Members are reminded to bring a guest to learn about SPJST and its many benefits from the special program that will be presented. Lunch will be served as usual and door prizes given. See you there!

Lodge 5, Pilot PointTioga golf tournament a "big success" The meeting was called to order by President L.E. David at 1:45 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Dustin Koerner.

A moment of silence was observed honoring John Joseph Kubala. John, who was often referred to as Uncle Johnny, died on May 11, 1999 at a Denton Hospital. The funeral was at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Pilot Point.

Burial was in St. Thomas Cemetery in Pilot Point. Johnny Kubala was born November 6, 1914 in Williamson County. Johnny is survived by his wife, Florence Kubala, children Charolette Loncar, Janie Thurmond, Jerry Kubala, Cynthia Berend, and Valerie Carney; brothers, Lewis Kubala, Henry Kubala and Albert Kubala; sisters, Annie David, Louise Oujesky and Evelyn Scaff; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family has requested that any memorials be made to the SPJST Lodge Pilot Point-Tioga Lodge 5 Building Fund, c/o Pilot Bank, 200 S. U.S. Highway 377, Pilot Point, Texas, 76258.

Golf Tournament Enjoyed by All Vice President Donnie Koerner gave the report on our golf tournament which was held on April 18th. We are happy to report that it was a big success. Donnie tells us he has had a lot of comments praising the way it was conducted. The food and all of the activities were enjoyed by all. This reporter is not a golfer. I don't even know how to hold a club, but I was stationed at No. 9 hole and got some very good pictures of all the serving crew.

They even had L.E. David making barbecue sandwiches.

Our quilt drawing was held at the same time. It also was a big success.

The quilt was won by Dorothy Tamplen of Denton, Texas.

The minutes were read by Secretary Elise Koerner, and were accepted as read. The treasurer's report was given

by Phil Rowbotham; a good report, Phil.

The youth report was given by Youth Leader Kathy Koerner; good report also, Kathy. Our youth are doing a great job and have a lot of plans that they are working on. Guide Dean Carender, reported we had 25 members present and six guests.

Donation Received Bill Heitzman tells us that he received a phone call from RVOS District Director Emil Brozek. Mr. Brozek said that each year RVOS makes a donation to some non-profit organization in the area. This year they are sending a check in the amount of $300 to SPJST Pilot Point-Tioga Lodge 5 Building Fund. We want to express our appreciation to Mr. Brozek and all his associates at RVOS. Thanks Folks, the money will be put to good use.

Meeting/Picnic June 13 Our June meeting will be a picnic at L.E. David's home, Sunday, June 13, at 6 p.m. You bring nothing by yourselves and anyone you want to invite.

Come one, come all! There will be no charge, but donations will be accepted at the door.

47, Seaton gearing up for annual picnic Lodge

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Do you realize that June 6th is almost here? The first Sunday of June is the traditional date of our annual picnic, a fund raiser in which all ages can participate.

Food, Food and More Food The barbecue beef and sausage with all the trimmings will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the cool of the hall or plates to go. Hamburgers and french fries will also be available in the afternoon and evening. The sweet booth with baked goods will be chaired by Margaret Gibson and she will appreciate your donations of cakes, pies, kolaches, cookies etc. The kitchen will also need cakes, either sheet or bundt cakes to compliment the plates.

Music, Displays, Games The Granger Polka Boys will furnish their music in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m. outside, and again in the hall after the auction, for a free dance. We haven't had one in a few years, so we thought we would try one this year. The Scott and White Medivac will be on display in the afternoon. Games for all ages will include ring-a-Coke sponsored by the youth club and bingo for which we are asking you to bring prizes, staple goods, sodas—things you would like to win. Edward Mares is in charge and he will appreciate your help in this booth.

charge of the kitchen crew so volunteer your help to them. Train rides for the children and also, fire truck rides for any age are planned. The auction will begin at 4:30 p.m. and items for this are to be brought by members.

Some of the ladies of our lodge will be making some kolaches and will sell them at the tarok tournament on May 15 and at the Czech Heritage meeting on May 16.

We will be having a polka dance here at our lodge hall on May 23. The Havlak-Batla Polka Band will be playing.

84, Dallas receives committee reports Lodge

Dear Members, All afternoon, it rained and rained into the evening, but it didn't keep members from attending our monthly meeting even though more is predict-

Sister Salac reported a thank ye,. was received for the contribution made to the memorial fund in memory of Brother John Sykora. The note came from his children, Doris and Richard.

Committee Reports Sunshine - Brother Ben Jarma sent a get well card to Brothers Raymond Rejcek and Joe Tydlaska, a sympathy to Marcelle (Freeman) Gill on the loss of her husband and to the John Slovak family on the loss of wife, Opal.

Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported the youth will meet and also a great turn-out at the District Three Youth Leaders meeting held at Lodge 84 last week. She reported that two of the youth attended the District Three meeting in Fort Worth, namely, J.J. Novak, and Jarred Olds and they both helped during the memorial ceremony.

Sister Bessie also reported the October 17 is the day the Czechs will gather for Czech Day at the state fair. More on this at a later date. Also, the Czech Culture meets on Monday, June 28.

Members Gather For Clean-up House - Chairman Adolph Salac thanked all who helped clean the teen room and conference room — Brothers Randy Scott, Emil Petr, Bennie Gerlich and Bennie Jarma and Sisters Carlyn Ondrusek, Bessie Petr, Ellen Gerlich and Evelyn Salac. They must have worked hard because it just looks beautiful!

Fraternal Activities Coordinator Faye Rejcek gave her report. She reminded all that June 1 is the deadline to turn in flag essays. The DallasEnnis Fraternal Council meets on Monday, June 14 picnic time at 7 p.m.

SPJST members planning to come should bring a dessert to be served with the meal.

Brother Ben Jarma thanked the membership for the use of the lodge for the baseball team's 35th reunion which was a huge success! Many of the out-of-town ex-ball players showed up to talk about "remember when . ." The dinner was so delicious. As Brother Connie Brennan remarked, " ... enough food for 500, so go back for seconds . . ." —and they did.

Our next dance is on Saturday, June 19, with music provided by the Sulak Brothers band. You all come!

Once again, it is time for the free barbecue dinner for members of Lodge 88, who have paid their local dues of $6.

Children under 16 do not pay local dues, but must be a member of Lodge 88.

Guests who wish to attend our festive day are more than welcome. The charge for the dinner will be $5 for adults and $3 for children.

We will try to provide inside activities as well as outdoor activities.

88, Houston reminds members, guests of June 6 homecoming Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, Just another reminder that we are having our Homecoming on June 6, beginning at 11 a.m. till 3 p.m.

Barbecue will be served with all the trimmings to all members holding a current membership card. Guests will be $5 each - and where can you get a barbecue dinner, plus a day of fun, all for $5; children under 12 - $3 each? There will be games, spin wheel, prize drawings and a silent auction. Lodge 88 Choral Group and Orchestra performs at 11:30 a.m. Performances by the Folk Dance Club and the Youth Dance Class.

There will also be a dance from 3 p.m. till 7 p.m. with music by the Brian Marshall Band. The cost for this dance will be $4 each. Come on out and enjoy the fun-filled day. And, of course, the Birthday Club will be selling cakes and pies for this event. I want to say thanks to all who contributed toward the purchase of the cakes and pies. It is greatly appreciated.

Rosie Roznovsky is still in the hospital. He seems to be feeling better, however. Margaret Spahr is at home now, recovering from knee surgery. Her sister is here from St. Louis to help her.

She'll be here about six weeks. Aren't sisters great? Isn't it good to see Jake and Louise Jacob dancing? He looks fine, too.

Chrissy Hegwood's mother, Dorothy Bilnoski, passed away and was buried on Tuesday, May 18th. She was 71 years old and was preceded in death by her husband, Peter. They had 10 children. Our prayers are with your family, Chrissy.

Who Is It? She joined SPJST at the age of 13 and was active in the youth club. She sang at many lodge functions and with many local bands. She sings at area nursing homes entertaining senior citizens and at memorials and funerals. She has performed at SPJST Conventions since 1968 and has been a member of the choral group since it was formed.

She has served as President, Secretary and Treasurer of this group in 1984 and is the guide at the monthly lodge meetings. She has been a sales representative for 45 years. She was married in 1955, has two daughters and two sons and six grandchildren. They are a 100 percent SPJST family. She is a member of All Saints Catholic Church and has sung in the choirs of All Saints, Christ the King, St. Rose, St. Theresa and Annunciation churches. She has opened and closed the Czech Fest in Rosenberg for 23 years. In her younger years, she was a PTA room mother and active in Little League and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. She has had the honor of singing our National Anthem at Astro baseball games twice. Who is it? She is Helen Hegwood who is married to King Hegwood. Their children are Vicci,Vivian Vincent and Vernon.

Our President, Clara Broz, and her husband, Johnny, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, May 23rd. It was a beautiful celebration and their son, John, gave a speech with lots of relatives there to help celebrate. My husband, Calvin Orsag, just came home from the hospital this evening. He was there for six days. He had internal bleeding, but they never did find out where the bleeding was coming from.

Hope he will be okay now, however.

The SPJST monthly meeting was held by Vice President Rose Steinman.

President Jerry Milan and his wife were away visiting their motherlands, the Czech Republic and Yugoslavia.

Their cousins, Donna and Jerry Parker accompanied them. They also visited Italy on their sojourn.

The youth club had their meeting simultaneously and had a wonderful time decorating flower pots. Three beautiful bouquets were given at the meeting. Tressie Sanders received one for being the youngest mother. Mrs. Prell received one for being the oldest mother. And, Mary Renfro won one in a drawing.

As is the custom, Mother's Day would not be complete without the wonderful dinner. This special day is a time set aside to show appreciation to our mothers and also to reflect upon the responsibility of being one. It is our duty to not only care for our children, but to teach them respect, morals, ethics and values along with sharing our faith. And, too, when we become older, our roles reverse and it is time for the children to take care of their mothers with as much love and patience as were given to them. Love to all mothers and ...

177, Academy compliments Ebony Cultural Society for organizational efforts Lodge

Our May meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Bill Hutka. After the Pledge of Allegiance, President Bill Hutka introduced special guests representing the Ebony Cultural Society which included Roscoe Harrison, President of the Ebony Cultural Society, and his lovely wife, Sandra.

Bill and Joanne Hutka recently attended the Debutante Ball sponsored by the Ebony Cultural Society. Bill complimented Mr. Roscoe Harrison and the efforts of his organization.

Mr. Harrison also served as our guest speaker for the night.

He gave us a brief overview of the mission of the Ebony Cultural Society. One of the topics that he discussed with us was the procedure used to screen applicants for the debutante program. He said they must be of good moral character, preferably at least a high school graduate (many are already enrolled in college), less than 24 years of age, unmarried, hot pregnant, and no children. Debutante applicants must also follow a decorum for dress and behavior. He said that many applicants are nominated by either high school or college counselors. After selection, debutante candidates attend classes on career building, dress, art appreciation, make up, etc. Mr. Harrison summarized his presentation by stating that the main purpose of the Ebony Cultural Society is to restore "core values" (good moral character and hard work leading to success) in our young women so that they may lead productive and successful lives. I know that with wonderful people like Roscoe and Sandra Harrison leading the organization they will .be very successful in making an impact on the lives of our

In closing, Roscoe then presented President Bill Hutka with a complimentary program book from the Debutante Ball which Bill accepted and distributed for all to see.

As we continued with our lodge meeting, Libbie Bartek gave the Sunshine Committee report. Theresa Baca was ill, and Libbie told Ray and Amalia Ybarra that we were happy to have them at the meeting. Ray .. . looking good!

All committee chairmen gave their reports and the minutes of the April meeting were approved with one correction.

Our next meeting will be June 9th at 7:00 at Maggie's Restaurant in Little River. We decided to have our June meeting and summer social on the same day. Trustees will have a short meeting at 6:30 prior to the meeting.

FAC Barbara Rosenkranz will be coordinating the event at Maggie's. A sign-up sheet was distributed for members attending. Choice of steak or good ole "chicken fried steak" will be served. The Everyday Hero awards will also be presented during the June meeting. If you want to attend and haven't signed up, call Barbara and let her know how many will attend.

Barbara also invited everyone to the annual Flag Day Ceremony to be held again at the Home Office in Temple on June 14th.

The trustees voted to raise the lodge rental fee from $450 to $500.

Trustees also voted unanimously against hosting the District Two lock

in this fall. Additional light fixtures will be installed in the lodge to help "brighten" the area when we host events. We will also be working with TU Electric on a program designed to help us save money on our electric bill. A new meter will be installed at no cost.

President Hutka reminded everyone that our meetings are now much longer than before. As a result, he suggested that in order to schedule speakers and activities within our allotted Wednesday night meeting, guests attending the meetings should contact him or the lodge secretary prior so we can set the agenda.

Barbara Rosenkranz presented a certificate of appreciation to Lodge 177 for its support with the March of Dimes fund-raiser.

Bill asked everyone to "put on their thinking caps" and come up with names of local charities or organizations that we may wish to donate to in the future. Everyone agreed that so far we've made some pretty good donations and we want to keep up the good work and continue to be "fraternalists" and help our fellow man.

We've also thoroughly enjoyed the speakers from some of the organizations that we've donated to.

Now, remember to mark your calendars and see you in Little River at Maggie's on June 9th!

183, Arlington schedules family night for June 18 Lodge

We had a nice Family Night on Friday, May 21st with roast beef, potatoes and all the trimmings.

Approximately 40 guests and members attended.

Our next Family Night will be June 18th and all members are encouraged to attend. Bring a covered dish or your favorite dessert. SPJST provides the entree. We really have a great time at these functions.

Our monthly lodge meeting was held Monday, May 10th with President Leon Stiborek presiding.

Sunshine Chairperson Dorothy Adamek reported that Bennie Mae Pustejovsky had cancer surgery and is still in the hospital.

Our bingo has been extremely successful and our hall rental bookings have been exceptional.

196, HoustonWest plans for youth achievement day Lodge

Lodge 196 will be the site of the District Five Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, June 27.

Registration for the youth will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 11 a.m. A barbecue chicken lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Everyone attending is encouraged to, bring a pastry of choice. The lunch will cost $3.50 for adults and $2 for children under 12 years old. YAD is alwys a day filled with fun and you are able to come out to see the many different talents that our youth clubs have. So come on out and bring your friends, kids and family members.

Sewing Circle May meeting report Ennis

The Circle met on May 13, 1999.

There were 32 members present. Our visitors were Mary Krajca, Willie Skrivanek, Jerry E. Zmolek, Jerry Kohn, Charles Kosarek, Julius Podhrasky, Charles Elevan and Jerry Koubek.

President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Emil Moucka, brother in-law of Sister Hattie Moucka. We express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved families.

Secretary Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes. Treasurer Lillie Kosarek gave the financial report. Both reports were approved as read.

The next quarterly meeting of Bryan-College Station will be 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 1999 at the home of Andy and Lola Vavra, 4517 Sutton Court, Bryan, Texas. That is in the Wheeler Ridge Subdivision off of FM 158. If you need directions, call Andy or Lola at 774-7519.

At this meeting, we will continue to discuss the possibilities of organizing a youth club for our lodge. JOE ALPHONSE SEVCIK, age 77, who passed away at his home in Buckholts on May 11, 1999.

He was born in Milam County to parents Matej and Felomena (Tomek) Sevcik on January 1, 1922.

He graduated from Yoe High School in Cameron in 1940 and married Vrala Bartek on May 20, 1947.

Joe retired from American Desk after 41 years as a welder. He also was a farmer and a rancher; he enjoyed so much being out on the farm.

He was a member of the SS. Cyril and Methodius Church at Marek, a member of the KJT Society No. 39 and SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts.

A rosary was recited at MarekBurns-Laywell Funeral Home in Cameron.

The funeral service was held on Thursday, May 13, 1999 at 2 p.m. at SS. Cyril and Methodius Church in Marak, Texas with the Reverend Walter Matus officiating with burial in the old Marak Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Vrala Sevcik of Buckholts; two daughters, Linda Knapek of Taylor and Cecila Stuchly of Coupland; two brothers, Frank Sevcik of Corpus Christi, Anton Sevcik of El Campo; one sister, Mary Hubnik of Cameron; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Joseph Stuchly, George Knapek, Eduard Knapek, John Danek, Joseph Schiller, Joseph Vaculin, Shaun Scholner and Robert Scruggs.

John Joseph Kubala, 84, of Pilot Point died Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at Denton Regional Medical Center.

Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Kubala was said at St. Thomas Catholic Church Friday, May 14, 1999 at 10 a.m. Burial followed at St. Thomas Cemetery. Reverend Don Brennan officiated the service. Rosary was said Thursday, May 13 at Huff/Slay Funeral Home in Pilot Point.

Mr. Kubala was born on November 6, 1914 in Williamson County, Texas to the late John F. and Anna Prihoda Kubala. He married Florence Heitzman on September 20, 1937 in Pilot Point.

He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, SPJST Lodge No. 5 and RVOS Lodge No. 103. He also was a member of St. Thomas Golden Agers, St. Thomas Men's Club, St. Thomas Cemetery Association and AARP. Mr. Kubala is survived by his wife, Florence of Pilot Point; five children, Charolette Loncar of Plano, Janie Thurmond of Weatherford, Jerry Kubala of Weatherford, Cynthia Berend of Southlake and Valerie Carney of Pilot Point; three brothers, Lewis Kubala of Fort Worth, Henry Kubala of Fort Worth and Albert Kubala of Fort Worth; three sisters, Annie David of Pilot Point, Louise Oujesky of Bedford and Evelyn Scaff of Hillsboro; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He attended grade school in St. Mary's parochial school, then St. John's Seminary in San Antonio where he completed high school.

He moved to Houston with the seminary when it relocated. He was ordained to Roman Catholic priesthood May 24, 1958, in St. Mary's —SPJSTCathedral in Austin. His first assignment was as administrator of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Marlin.

Later, he was associate pastor of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Bryan, Expression where he became involved with the Texas A&M football team, being of Sympathy known as "Aggie Padre." Now for the graduates-congratulations! Victor E. Guggenheim, III, son of Victor and Elaine Guggenheim and grandson of Sister Vallie and Wesley Tupy, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Finance and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Government. Sheila Roberts, daughter of John Wesley and Ginger Roberts and granddaughter of Alice Roberts, graduated from Texas A&M University, Commerce, Texas with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Department of Elementary Education.

Sheila will be teaching the first grade in Mesquite, Texas, next fall. She received several high honors. Twins Ryan and Todd Ranly, sons of Diane Ranly and Samuel Roberts and grandsons of Alice Roberts, graduated from the Smithson Valley High School, San Antonio, Texas. We are very proud of all the young men and women. They do have to study hard to accomplish their high honors.

My letter to the Vestnik is read as far as Hayward, California. A friend of the family, Martha Kurz Kahrhoff, formerly of Ennis, Texas, receives the Vestnik in Hayward. Also, Sister Frances Sparks reads my letters. She and her husband now live in Georgetown, Texas.

There will be no pet story this time.

Our next meeting will be June 10, 1999. We will have a white elephant sale at our July meeting. Start collect ing items and bring them to the July meeting.

1999 Youth Leaders address team-building initiatives at spring workshop in La Grange

Mr. McBride also explained the role of sales representatives to the leaders.

He challenged them to become sales representatives. Mr. McBride introduced the state field representatives who were in attendance-Keith Gatewood, Larry Wagner and Jim Wiest.

Mr. Gatewood then presented a check for $100 to District One Youth Counselor and Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Leader Susan Skrabanek. Susan received the check for insurance sales.

Ms. Rosenkranz informed the leaders of the SPJST Local Lodge Incentive Program and explained its benefits.

District youth counselors then presented mini workshops on party planning, ceremonies, programs, skits, fund-raising, and games.

Youth leaders exchanged craft, scrapbook and poster ideas. The leaders also viewed a video of Author Cynthia Rose discussing the importance of preserving the past.

Following the evening's flag ceremony, youth leaders and guests gathered for the SPJST Youth Leader Banquet.

Fifty-eight youth leaders, SPJST representatives and guests attended the 1999 SPJST Youth Leaders Workshop held at Camp Lone Star in La Grange on March 12 to 14.

The workshop began Friday evening with a get-acquainted game, a campfire and snacks.

Following Saturday morning's flag ceremony, District Three youth leaders presented a memorial for Allyson Holman who was killed in an automobile accident in February. Allyson was a dedicated youth club member at Lodge 187, Round Rock for many years. Allyson's mother, Sharon Holman, was an assistant district youth counselor for District Two. The leaders dedicated this year's workshop to.

After breakfast, State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny welcomed the leaders to the workshop. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar introduced District Seven Director Bob Awards Presentation Bayer. Charles Wheeler, astronomy instructor at Temple College, then addressed the leaders. He presented information about the night sky and demonstrated a star chart and its usefulness. Mr. Wheeler then lead the leaders outside to view the evening sky through a large telescope. The leaders witnessed several stars and Saturn's rings.

Leaders then listened to the Gus Linderman Big Band Orchestra. Kathy Chaloupka of the La Grange Dance Club also invited George Blaha of Victoria to teach the leaders a few swing dancing steps.

The evening concluded with snacks, socializing and games.

After the flag ceremony and breakfast on Sunday morning, youth leaders packed their bags and said good-byes before heading home.

District One Youth

Counselor invites young people to attend summer camp Dear SPJST Youth Members, In an effort to boost participation in the SPJST Youth Program, I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to attend the 1999 District One Camp.

Our camp dates are Monday, July 19th through Thursday, July 22nd. We will once again be camping at Camp Val Verde near Waco. Cost for camp is generally around $85 per camper, but will be reduced to $25 per camper for all inactive youth members. It is our hopes that a positive camping experience will encourage you to become active in the local youth clubs or excite you enough to get a youth club started in your lodge.

An exciting four days has been planned with this year's theme being "SPJST — A Proud Past and a Bright Future." For the proud past, we will be focusing on Czech Heritage. Activities planned include making homemade ice cream and egg noodles and learning a few Czech songs. For the bright future, activities will focus on outer space. Plans are to invite a local astronomer to bring a telescope so that we can gaze at the stars. We also plan to have a guest speaker, possibly someone from NASA. We also plan to go to the movies one afternoon. Maybe we can all go see Star Wars again!!

Besides the activities planned to fit our theme, we also enjoy swimming, horseback riding, canoeing, crafts and

cookouts. Older youth, usually 10 and older, will once again participate in the Challenge Course.

Youth Counselor encourages YAD, camp participation Dear Members, Summer is here and our SPJST Youth program is in full swing. We are looking forward to having a great, fun summer.

Youth Achievement Day (YAD) cards, royalty speeches, recipes and tapes must be turned in to the DYC no later than June 7. We are real excited for this year's YAD which will be held on Sunday, June 27 at Lodge 24, Cyclone. There is still time for you to enter your talent and crafts. This year, food entries will be put together for a recipe booklet which will be available at YAD. Enter the food category and have your recipe and name included.

Funds from the booklets will go toward our summer trip. Royalty competition is going to be great. I am so excited. I hear that we have 13 queen contestants. Wow! I can hardly wait.

Youth Club to participate in June 5 Snookfest Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club will again be participating in the Annual Snook Fest on June 5, 1999. We will be participating in the parade and have a water booth. We are busy preparing for this event and we hope to see you there.

• June 6th - Youth meeting at 5 p.m. (sorry for the time change.) The hall was rented earlier in the day for a reunion. After the meeting, we will have YAD practice. Anyone doing talent or royalty can practice on stage. Bring anything you need to practice with.

• June 13th - District Two swim social at BLORA (Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area). Be at the Pecan Pavilion at 3 p.m. There is a large playground, volleyball court, basketball court and restrooms are near the pavilion.

The paddleboats are not far either.

Don't forget the sunscreen. It costs $3 a carload to enter the park and it is patrolled by the Military Police and there are lifeguards.

member Jessica Lyon recognized for achievement The United States Achievement Academy recently announced that Jessica Lyon of Lodge 177, Academy has been recognized for academic achievement as a United States National Honor Roll Award winner.

Jessica, who attends Bartlett High School, will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, which is published nationally.

Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than every before in America's history. Certainly, United States Achievement Academy winners should be congratulated and appreciated for their dedication to excellence and achievement," said Dr. George Stevens, Executive Director of the United States Achievement Academy.

T.J. Sokol Hall Hosts Gymnastics Competition 1314 West Patton - Houston, Texas

on June 4, 5 and 6,

there will be a gymnastic competition from six Sokol units from all over Texas. On June 4, there will be volleyball at 6 p.m. On June 5 at 8 a.m., gymnastic competition begins for both boys and girls. Also, on June 5, there will be a dance from 7:30 p.m. until midnight with a disc jockey providing the music. On June 6, there will be track and field events and closing ceremonies beginning at 1 p.m.

Awards presented in the afternoon.

Food all three days:

Saturday - barbecue plates from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday - barbecue 'p lates from 11 a.m, to 1 p.m.
