Positive Attitude Wonders

Works All in a Day's Work You hear it said in business all the time: The best people will not stay if the leadership does not actively champion high performance and quality values. "The best employees," according to author James Quinn in his book Intelligent Enterprise, "come to a firm where they can work most productively and pleasantly." How well the company supports them is reflected in their creativity, responsiveness, and efficiency - and most importantly, in how well they treat the customers.

It makes sense.

When you know that somebody believes in you, you're going to do your best to do a good job. The same golden principle applies in our local lodges: Positive reinforcement works wonders.

Last Thursday, we enjoyed a visit to the Home Office by Lodge 54, West President Wilburn Willis. Not only did Brother Willis have good things to say about the Vestnik; he also had a lot of nice things to say about his fellow lodge officers, lodge members and the West community in general. On page 6 of this week's Vestnik, there appears a letter from Lodge 54, West Secretary Anne Emery. The letter, which makes references to renovating the lodge hall and organizing a youth club, reflects the optimism conveyed by Brother Willis during his visit.

Elsewhere in this week's Vestnik are inviting letters from lodges promoting a broad range of member-oriented and civic-minded projects: Czech classes at Lodge 15, Buckholts; a disaster relief drive at Lodge 40, El Campo - Hillje; a tarok tournament at Lodge 49, Rowena; a dinner, bake sale, games and auction at Lodge 80, Holland; a softball reunion at Lodge 84, Dallas; and safe driving classes at Lodge 88, Houston - to name but a few! They all have one thing in common in that they serve to illustrate what can be done when lodge leaders take the time to identify worthy objectives and make a sincere effort to get the people involved.

Lodges all over the state are committing their time and energy to the support of worthwhile causes. They are taking the best that the SPJST has to offer - a tradition of helping people to care for their families - and are extending it to their communities. There are few limiting factors placed on local lodges and youth clubs and how they choose to meet their fraternal obligations. Really, what it comes down to is initiative, imagination and leadership. Positive reinforcement can work wonders!

Update on Statewide Charities If you're a regular reader of the Vestntik, you know that one of the 1998 SPJST Statewide charities was the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange. Plans are for the center to be an interactive historical cultural center dedicated to the heritage of Texas' one million Czechs.

Located in La Grange, Texas, the center will be built on 70 acres above the Colorado River off Highway 77. It will include a museum, library, archives, amphitheater, living history farm, living history Texas Czech village and picnic grounds.

Organized by a coalition of Texas Czech organizations, the center is a non-profit organization. A $17 million capital campaign to fund the center is currently underway.

On Sunday, May 23, the Austin Czech Historical Association in conjunction with the Travis-Williamson Counties Czech Heritage Society will be throwing a "fun" raiser dinner and dance benefiting the Center at the K of C Hall in La Grange.

The day will include tours of the Texas Czech Heritage Center's 70-acre site at 1 p.m., music by the Kovanda Czech Band of Houston and Fayetteville, a Czech dinner at 4 p.m. by executive chef Pavia Adamkova Van Bibber of Austin, as well as a silent auction and drawing.

Tickets are $15 in advance or at the door. Children, six to 13, may enjoy the festivities for $5. Children, five and under, are free. Also, please note: A little farther to the south, in Houston, the Czech Cultural Center of Houston, also one of the SPJST's designated statewide charities in 1998, will be hosting "A Night of Czech Music, Dinner and Dance IV" on Friday, August 27.

Entertainment will be by Eva Jarolim and the Gus Lindemann Orchestra.

Special guests will be Captain Eugene A. Cernan, U.S.N., (ret.) who will be autographing copies of his book The Last Man on the Moon and Honorary Czech Consul Raymond J. Snokhous.

SPJST introduces three new sales reps The SPJST is pleased to introduce the addition of three new volunteer sales representatives. They are Loretta Schaefer, of Lodge 49, Rowena; Royce Zatopek, of Lodge 6, Cottonwood; and Richard Johnson of Lodge 195, Cleburne.

Sister Schaefer and her husband, Andy, live in the St. Lawrence area and have three children and ten grandchildren. Loretta says she enjoys taking care of her grandchildren and playing the organ. Lodge 66, Waco finishes first in 1998 SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament Lion's Park in Temple, Texas, provided a beautiful background for the SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament.

With huge live oaks shading the horseshoe pits, and a colorful playground as a giant backdrop, the park is a perfect place for adults and children to play for a day.

18, Elgin honors birthdau celebrants, volunteers Lodge

April 20th, the Elgin Lodge 18 had their regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. with dinner honoring two members, Ben David and Wilbert Heine on their 39th birthdays (how they wish).

President Andrew Greinert lead the members in a prayer before a meal of cold cuts, cheese, chips, pickles (Greinert), coffee and desserts.

President Andrew called the regular meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer for our brothers and sisters. Roll call of all officers was answered. Absent due to reason were Trustee Dud Morris and Ruben Krieg.

Detailed minutes were presented by Secretary Agnes Eschberger which were approved by members.

Treasurer Agnes Rupp gave out reports of the income and expense for the month of April.

Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Dollie Hajda made her monthly report.

Youth Leader Ruby Bowen gave her report on the youth club who have taken over the kitchen at the lodge dances.

The children are doing a beautiful job in the kitchen and very good in cleaning up tables. Many thanks to Ruby and her children. She reported on the May Fest in Taylor and coming up in Elgin.

Other chairpersons' reports were heard from: Bar—Thomas Ries, Tickets—Gladys Mogonye, House— Irene Helgren, entertainment—Artie Monson, Memorial—Mildred David, Rules and Regulations—Alex Roehlke, Membership—Marvin Marek and Secretary of the Trustees (with the April minutes) Jack Eschberger. Very good reports were made on the position each holds.

I especially want to thank Agnes Eschberger and Dollie Hajda. Thanks to everyone who contributed or helped Agnes and Dollie. I know they spent many hours away from their busy schedules to do such a wonderful write-up on me, and you will never know how much I appreciate all you did.

Lodge 54, West hosts successful dinner and auction The first quarterly meeting of 1999 was called to order by President Wilburn Willis on March 5. He welcomed everyone in attendance and led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of the following members: Lillie E. Snapka who died on November 15, 1998, Bohus Jack Chupik, Sr. who died on December 19, 1998, Julie Holacka who died on January 15, 1999, Raymond F. Barton who died on January 6, 1999 and Joe Mynar, Sr. who died on January 17, 1999. May they rest in eternal peace.

A roll call of officers by Secretary Anne Emery indicated all in attendance with the exception of Freddie Kaluza, Treasurer. Secretary Anne Emery read the minutes of the November 6 meeting.

These were accepted with one correction. Secretary Emery read three items of correspondence, a letter from President Leshikar outlining Flowers Direct, a new member benefit, a flyer and registration slip for the State Horseshoe Tournament and a letter from Barbara Rosenkranz with registration slips for the upcoming Domino Tournament.

New Youth, Adult Applicants Accepted Financial Secretary Maxine Sefcik gave her report which was accepted as read. New youth applicants are Colton S. Bohannan, Lori D. Cockrell, Lacey N. Hykel, Tyler J. Hykel, Jennifer A. Kalina, Tabitha P. Ramsey, Tiffany Ann Ramsey and Brooke Renegar. New adult applicant was Edwina J. Matus.

All these were signed up by Freddie Kaluza. New adult applicants signed up

by Sales Representative Wilburn Willis are David Lynn Chudej, Delayne Chudej, Jaydean Willis (two policies) and Wilburn Willis (two policies).

Sales Representative Greg Nors signed up a personal policy on himself. We appreciate these dedicated sales representatives and thank them for their efforts.

Cynthia M. Nors, Edwin B. Nors and Yvonne Nors transferred to Lodge 54 from Lodge 66, Waco. We welcome these members and look forward to having them in our midst.

Paid-up policy holders in 1999 include: Hayden P. Holecek, Delaine Ann Wolf, Karen Ann Hafner, Terry Ray Baron, Michael Zahirniak, Stephen R. Zahirniak, Henry Emil Matula, Cynthia G. Anthony and Laura Zahirniak Boyett.

Members Attend Workshop Fraternal Activities Coordinator Maxine Sefcik gave the following report which was accepted as read. She expressed disappointment that our Fraternalist of the Year, Janice Kaluza, was omitted from the Vestnik wen the other Fraternalists were pictured. She explained that after making several phone calls, she was advised that this matter would be looked.into and possibly published at a later date. Three members, namely Maxine Sefcik, Anne Emery and Jana Vaculik attended the workshop and banquet at Lodge 177, Academy. We found the workshop to be very informative and the banquet

very enjoyable. Our thanks to the Supreme Lodge and host Lodge 177 for a wonderful time!

Lodge 54 members who donated blood in the West community on February 25 were Freddie Kaluza, Janice Kaluza, Marcella Klaus, and JoAnn Nors. Jeanette Colley assisted on the day of the drive.

Jana Vaculik, daughter of Jan and Marcela Vaculik and our lodge member, received second place in the UIL current affairs competition at Connally High School in Waco. Her essay was on NAFTA; our congratulations to Jana and we wish her good luck in her next competition.

Copies of the treasurer's report were distributed and it was presented by Greg Nors. This report was accepted as read.

President Willis welcomed our visitors, namely Johnnie Krizan, Melanie Zavodny and David Nauert. President Willis announced that we should have called a meeting to discuss plans for hall renovation. This meeting will be held on April at 7 p.m.

Fund Raiser a Success!

Lil Matus reported on our last fund raiser. The fried chicken dinner and auction wa a huge success. Many thanks to everyone that helped cook and serve, brought desserts, came out to eat and participated in the auction. As we all know, this takes much work and could not be accomplished without team effort. We plan to have another fried chicken dinner in the fall, but plans have not been finalized yet.

Sisters Mona Zahirniak and Mary Lou Mynar audited the books and found all to be in order.

Our next quarterly meeting will be held on Friday, June 4 at 7 p.m.

Everyday Hero awards will be presented at this meeting.

Brother Ray Matus reported that some much needed sewer repair work had been accomplished.

Visitors Welcomed President Willis turned the meeting over to our visitors. Brother Johnnie Krizan explained that the Home Office is there to help. He complimented President Willis on his enthusiasm. He explained that SPJST is value added Society and that a youth club is one of the benefits.

President Willis stated that he hopes we can get a youth club organized at Lodge 54. State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny spoke and said she would be available to help in any way she could to get it done.

The meeting was adjourned and Jana Vaculik drew names of the door prize winners—Ray Matus and Anne Emery won the monetary prizes, Wilburn Willis won a beer mug, Jana Vaculik won a wine glass, Greg Nors won a bank, Jan Vaculik won a letter opener, Lil Matus won a bank, Christine Bishop won a tape and Albina Matusek won a cap. Our thanks to our visitors for providing these door prizes.

Positive The lodge meeting of Waco, Lodge 66 will be at 2:30 p.m. on May 16. We will be celebrating Mother's Day and Father's Day with a barbecue meal.

Lodge 84, Dallas softball team reunion this Sunday, May 16 A reunion of SPJST Softball teams including all teams starting in years 1954 through 1988. This will be a special day for renewing old friendships, good times and tall tales.

Plans have been made to have this event on Sunday, May 16 at the SPJST Lodge 84 Hall located at 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas, Texas starting at 1 p.m. Food will be served at approximately 3:30 p.m. and more visiting afterwards.

A committee of Larry Brennan, Chairman, Ben Jarma, Albin Vrana, Paul Valenta, Lionel Schulz, Jerry Manak, Paul Bartos and Don Jarma have been meeting to organize this reunion. Plans are now in place. We have over a hundred players' names and addresses, however, we hope they see this letter or hear from some of the players and contact anyone on the committee. We assure you, we did really try. We urge you to bring you wives or friends, they are definitely included because they played a great part in the team's success throughout the years.

Wives, remember attending games with small children, tournaments, frying chicken at 5 o'clock for picnics at games, preparing sandwiches, cookies, baking hams for Stephenville tournaments, working in the kitchen at our benefit dances and the gettogethers at Tony's and the other places after the games? It was a lot of fun for all. Bet you remember, too.

There will be free keg beer, soft drinks and meat furnished for the banquet which will be served around

3:30 p.m. As funds are needed to cover expenses, we are asking each couple for $10 per couple or $5 per person and to also bring a covered dish. The meat on the menu will be ham and sausage.

All players are urged to bring pictures to share with all. You will all be mailed a special invitation with details and we request you return your reply along with remuneration to inform us of how many plan to attend. This will enable us to plan accordingly.

Our team was organized in 1954.

The purpose was to get the younger people interested in the lodge and make new friends. This proved to be very successful as many, many lasting friendships were formulated and still exist. We planned family picnics, fishing trips, steak award dinners—these were promised by Willie Ondrusek and wife, Carlyn, for winning league trophies. We won more than 25. For the years we weren't successful, we had "crow" dinners by Annie and Otto Janousek. They were first held at White Rock Lake and in later years, in the backyard of Ida and Lionel Schulz. Also, Sid and Justine Pokladnik were great and generous sponsors. Remember, too, girls, the girl parties when Justine entertained all of you? We also recall our Supreme Lodge and all the team sponsors which made all this possible through 35 seasons.

I could write a book, but space prohibits this. In closing, we urge and hope to have a huge attendance.

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi observes belated Mother's Day on Sunday The next meeting is on Sunday, May 16, 1999. We will celebrate a belated Mother's Day with a dinner. The lodge will furnish the meat and each family is asked to bring side dishes for the meal.

The men will do all the serving and clean up while the ladies are waited on.

The dinner will be served at 1 p.m. to be followed by the monthly meeting. I heard something said that members be sure to come. There will be some sort of surprise for mothers. We'll see what the surprise is!

Texas Barbecue Lunch Treasurer Entrop then put on his Supreme Lodge hat and reported on the success of the barbecue organized to raise money for the March of Dimes.

Thirteen hundred plates were sold and there were folks looking for more!

Vice President Zatopek was pleased to report on the scheduled restoration of the lodge waterline. We finally have a plumber working on it and we look forward to our new pipes and meter!

New Transfers Welcomed We then extended a hearty welcome to new members Susan and Dennis Dees who have transferred in from Lodge 47. We invite them and all our members to attend the upcoming meetings and our October party.

We are planning to expand the party into a "Lodge 87 Celebration of Honor and Recognition" for pin recipients, new members and for former officers of the lodge.

The men then withdrew and ejected my tape recorder from their midst. (It was truly left on inadvertently. We trust them—really, we do!) They then planned our. Mother's Day feast for the meeting on Tuesday, May 11, although we thought we heard words like football, and tee-time. Do you think maybe they were talking about something else?

88, Houston posts '99 schedule for AARP defensive driving classes Lodge

AARP Defensive Driving Classes are being sponsored and held at. SPJST Lodge 88, Houston at 1435 Beall Street at West 15th Street. Anyone who is age 50 or above may attend.

Membership in AARP or the SPJST is not required. Completion of the course allows for a ten percent reduction in your auto insurance. The course does not count toward ticket dismissal.

Classes are scheduled at the Lodge on May 13-14, July 15-16, August 1213, September 23-24, and October 2324, 1999. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. on the first day, with classes running from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on those Thursdays and Fridays. A course fee of $8.00 per person is assessed.

Reservations may be made by calling the Lodge office at (713) 869-5767 between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Lodge 88, Houston invites members to barbecue dinner June 6 Once again, it is time for the free barbecue dinner for members of Lodge 88, who have paid their local dues of $6. Children under 16 do not pay local dues, but must be a member of Lodge 88.

Guests who wish to attend our festive day are more than welcome. The charge for the dinner will be $5 for adults and $3 for children.

We will try to provide inside activities as well as outdoor activities.

Lodge 88 Concert Orchestra and Choral group and Folk Dancers will perform during the noon hours.

At 3 p.m. Brian Marshall will provide the music for you dancers.

91, Crosby discusses ways to recruit new members Lodge

SPJST Lodge 91, Crosby, held its first quarterly meeting on March 31, 1999 at 2 p.m. a the home of President Chester Stasney. All officers and several members were present. Guests were Jerry Prochazka of Lodge 65 and his wife, Delores.

The minutes and treasurer's report were approved as presented.

Correspondence received from the Supreme Lodge was shared with all officers and members. Thank you cards received from Alvin Franta and the family of Frank Doskocil were read.

Items of discussion were the maintenance of the SPJST Cemetery, the SPJST Hall and possible ways to recruit new members.

It was voted to honor 50-year members at the Christmas social in December.

The meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.

172, Pasadena reports on April meeting Lodge

On Wednesday, April 28, 1999, Lodge 172 held their regular monthly meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Robert Mayfield, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer for the sick and departed.

After roll call, President Mayfield welcomed our guest District Five Director Louis Hanus.

It's Time to Dance!

Regular dances are held on the third Saturday of every month. There will The a dance on May 15 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. with music by Cross Roads.

Hosts for the evening will be the Ivanhoe Group. Admission will be $4 per lodge member and $6 per visitor.

The Cloggers dance four times in April and were invited to a dinner honoring volunteers sponsored by the Sunrise Corporation. Cloggers, thanks for representing the SPJST in such a fantastic way!

Good Neighbor Program

Trustee Chairman Joe Krenek thanked everyone that came out Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and worked to make the social fun for everyone that attended. He also told the members at the meeting, that our next work day would be Monday, May 3rd.

President Mayfield thanked everyone that donated food and drinks for the social.

Robert wished everyone with a May birthday a happy birthday.

Robert then asked Mr. Hanus if he would like to say a few words to us.

Mr. Hanus suggested that we should call at least five people each and tell them to vote for the ad valorem tax in the November election if it is on the ballot.

Door prizes were given.

177, Academy members organize National Fraternal Week proclamation signing

lodges across Texas. In 1998, SPJST lodges reported hosting 5,200 lodge and community events and donated over $330,000 in charitable contributions. The 1998 report also indicated over 248,000 hours of community service were donated as well. Last year, SPJST lodges spent over $990,000 to keep their lodges open and of active service to their communities.

The SPJST Society, domiciled in Texas, is a member of the National Fraternal Congress (NFCA), which represents 91 fraternal benefit societies in the Untied States- and Canada.

Fraternal benefits societies operate as non-for-profit organizations combining business and volunteerism. They provide insurance and other financial services to their members, along with cultural, religious, social and educational benefits.

Fraternalists from SPJST Lodge 177, Academy, recently organized a proclamation signing in recognition of National Fraternal Week. The Proclamation, signed by Ronnie W. White, Mayor of Little-River Academy, Texas, recognizes April 1824, 1999, as National Fraternal week, and calls upon citizens to lend their support and show their appreciation for the contributions made by fraternal benefit societies.

The proclamation signing was part of a nationwide initiative dedicated to the recognition of fraternal and volunteer service. National Fraternal Week encourages the 9.3 million members affiliated with Americas fraternal benefit societies to conduct fraternal and community service activities in their localities. The initiative also recognizes fraternalists and their societies, for their many acts and contributions on behalf of individuals, families and communities.

Bleiblerville-Nelsonville SPJST Lodge 201 held their regular meeting Sunday March 14, 1999.

Fourteen members were in attendance. President Elaine Duran called the meting to order at 3 p.m. A moment of silent prayer was given in memory of Mrs. Dessie Platte. In absence of the secretary the minutes of the previous meeting were read by the President and approved.

The treasurer of the lodge and the hall gave their reports.

Books were checked and found in order.

It was reported that Danny Chovanec will be mowing the lawn.

On the sick list that we know of were Bill Stark, Esta Mikeska, Jessie Macat, Florence Jurchak. Wishes for a speedy recovery are wished to each of you.

He died in a Temple hospital on Monday, April 12, 1999.

He was born in Meeks to Rudolph Marek and Marie Petrek Marek. He lived in the Temple and Zabcikville areas all his life. He attended Little Meeks School. He married Juanita Bartek on February 25, 1939. He was a home builder throughout the Temple area for 40 years before he retired. He attended Ocker Brethren Church and was a member of Lodge 24, Cyclone, the Woodmen of the World and the Home Builders' Association.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Bartek Marek of Zabcikville; two daughters, Carol Olejnik of Houston

and Linda Vasek of Temple; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Joseph Burda, Jr. was born in Fort Worth on September 7, 1937, to Joseph Burda and Mary Kubiak Burda. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 326, the Polish National Alliance, SPJST Lodge 154 and St. Ann's Catholic Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Sylvia Kotch Burda, sons Jonathan and his wife Denise Burda of Catawassi, Missouri, Michael and his wife, Teresa Burda, of Mansfield and Andy Burda of College Station; daughters, Rose B. James of Burleson and Susan and her husband, Dr. Edmund W. Brother Williams was born in Bell County to Charlie and Cynthia Guthrie Williams. He was a maintenance worker for Bell County. He served eight years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Survivors are a brother, Charlie L. Williams of Belton; and four sisters, Ruby Nell Tabor, Linda Gaines, Edna Stroud and Frances Hill, all of Holland.

Services for Brother Williams were at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 26th at Post Oak Cemetery near Holland with the Reverend Ron Bellamy officiating.

Burial was in Bellwood Memorial Park on April 17, 1999. He died Tuesday, April 13, in a Temple hospital.

He was born in Thorndale to John G. and Selma S. Weigmann Patschke.

He had lived in Temple since 1964. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans No. 29 in Harker Heights, American Legion Post No. 133 in Temple and Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1820. He also was a member of Trinity Lutheran church in Temple. He served in World War II in the U.S. Air Corps from 1940-45, receiving military honors. He married Pauline Schuman on November 29, 1945, in Priddy.

Survivors are his wife, Pauline Patschke of Temple; his daughter, Roberta Patschke-Forbes of Austin; a brother, Clarence Patschke of Thorndale; a sister, Gladys Richter of Thorndale; and five grandsons.

Visitation was held at Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Temple.

May Vestnik Contest Josef and Rozina Krupala Orsak Family Reunion The descendants of Josef and Rozina Krupala Orsak will have their 10th biennial reunion in Seymour, Texas on July 9 and 10. Friday's activities will be held at the Orsak cabin at Lake Kemp with fishing, boating, skiing, and a cookout. That evening we will have a fireworks display in the country after which one can attend the Seymour Rodeo at the rodeo grounds.

This correctly completed project earns 20 points in the SPJST Youth Clubs Merit Point System

Youth Achievement Day Active youth club members who attend a majority of youth club meetings and participate in club activities throughout the youth year are eligible to participate in Youth Achievement Day (YAD). District Youth Achievement Days are held in the seven SPJST districts across the state.

Participants compete in craft, talent, and royalty contests. First place winners in all contests advance to state competition which is set for August 7 and 8 in Temple.

Craft and individual talent participants compete in four age categories: ages 6 to 8, ages 9 to 11, ages 12 to 14, and ages 15 to high school senior. The participant's age for competition is based on his/her age on June 1 before YAD. Participants may enter any four of the eight craft categories: constructed items, foods, handicraft, hobby kits, needlework, pictorial arts, science and education, and sewing. Group talent participants compete in two age categories: junior group (ages 6 to 12) and teen group (ages 13 to high school senior). Youth club members may also participate in a beseda dance exhibition in junior and teen age groups.

Youth club members ages 14 to high school senior compete for the titles of SPJST State King and SPJST State Queen. Contestants present a threeminute speech and they are judged on stage presence, speech content and speech delivery. Dukes and duchesses accompany the kings and queens.

Duke and duchess ages are six to 10 years.

YAD participants must pre-register by completing a separate entry card for each contest to be entered. These cards must be turned in to the district youth counselor no later than 20 days before district YAD. Talent participants must also provide cassette tapes that contain only the song to be used for their competitions. Royalty participants must provide a copy of their speeches and an autobiographical form. Entry cards and autobiographical forms are available from the SPJST Youth Department.

Youth clubs also compete in scrapbook and poster competition.

District Two young people remember Allyson Holman Dear Members, The annual District Two Spring meting was held on Sunday, March 21 at Lodge 47, Seaton.

It was great to see so many youth in attendance. District Two King Chad Cervenka and District Two Queen Kristine Muegge presented their speeches. Thank you Chad and Kristine for your wonderful representation of District Two.

Congratulations to Andy Baker of Cyclone and Jessica Kirby of Seaton being elected as District Flag Bearers.

Youth members participated in a candlelight memorial service in memory of the past years deceased members of District Two. A special tribute was presented in memory of our beloved past youth club member, Allyson Holman who was killed in a tragic automobile accident in College Station. District Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky shared memories of Allyson: As her parents, Bill and Sharon Holman stated, Allyson loved SPJST and Allyson was loved as well by the SPJST — by young and old.

Allyson represented District Two as Miss SPJST, attended camp, was an L.I.T. and entered all categories at Youth Achievement Day. One of Allyson's favorite camping experiences was seeing the excitement in the eyes of her younger campers when she was an L.I.T. She told her campers of the fairy at Camp Val Verde. To conclude our tribute to Allyson, the young campers who were so delighted by their special fairy, spread fairy dust around the candle lit in Allyson's memory.

District Three leaders, Vickie Sims, Linda Novak and Bessie Petr presented a beautiful poster in memory of Allyson at the youth leaders workshop. The poster held the SPJST emblem with Allyson's name. There was a period of silence and a time for me to share with all the leaders the wonderful times of such a beautiful and loving person. Thank you, District Three for your true fraternalism.

District Five Youth Counselor reports on field trip Dear Members, On April 10, 1999, District Five had their District trip to the George Bush Museum in Bryan-College Station. It is located on the campus of Texas A&M University. Oh, what a trip it was! There were 16 who made the trip and it was very exciting.

My thanks go out to Jeanette Bender, who is my assistant. She pulled together all the details to organize this trip. Members, you can just mention something to Sister Bender and she is a go-getter. She really knows how to put things in motion.

Robert Castillo, my new assistant, is learning a lot just by observing and he says to listen and keep an open mind.

Robert is also youth leader of Lodge 196, Houston-West. He keeps his youth very busy and they really show the results of his leadership.

The district youth counselors owe so much to their assistants and youth leaders. They help make our jobs a lot easier.

We had a few mishaps, but it only served to make our trip that much more exciting. Our bus blew a tire, but our wonderful bus driver, Ray Stuzman, was very capable of taking charge. We had a lot of good samaritans to stop

9, Snook Youth Club enjoys Easter treats Lodge

Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST had an Easter egg hunt and made Easter cups for the elderly on Saturday, April 3rd. We had a great time - even the older members.

Then on April 7th, we had our monthly meeting which was well attended. Mr. Gaas talked to us about the Chili Fest and the scholarships that area students get from the money made.

Then we had soda and cookies that our honorary grandmother, Grandma Rao, brought us.

Our 'next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 5th at 6:30 p.m.

Following a flat tire about six miles outside of the BryanCollege Station area, the group had plenty of time to pass!

and offer us aid. The constables of that precinct kept a watch on us. I'm sorry I did not get their names or even badge numbers, but they were great. We were delayed only two hours, but we had a lot of un during that time.

Jeanette did pretty good at throwing rocks at a post. Me? I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn five feet away. The kids took it all in stride and since I had no L.I.T.s on the trip, I used Krystle Bender and she was very knowledgeable in her help to the youth. Thanks a lot, Krystle. SPJST just brings out the best in everyone. Our youth and elders are very supportive of the youth program. Please, please, keep this up. We want to continue to swim instead of sinking. There is no task that is too hard, if we put our minds and shoulders to the wheel—we can make a difference.

We are already planning a trip to Santa Land during the holidays. It is so beautiful there. There are acres and acres of wonderful Christmas things that we learned about as we grew up.

Thanks to the SPJST, we have that support from the top (Supreme Lodge Officers), all the way to our district officers. Sister Evelyn Mikeska, our District Five President, went with us and she asked,."When is the next event?" Thank you, Evelyn. We sure are glad you are in our corner. Thanks again to all those who went and those who could not make it due to other' commitments, maybe next time?

During the merting, we discussed old and new business. Our charities for the month of May are:

Our lodge was host for the District Three sales banquet. The dining room had beatiful spring decorations. A delicious meal was prepared and served on China plates. Our youth club acted as waiters. It was so fun!

After we collected the dirty dishes we got of eat on papter plates.

Dear Lodge 24 Cyclone Youth Club, Here we are getting ready to end another great youth club year. We will

be losing three wonderful young ladies due to the fact that they are graduating.

They are April Cooksey, April Marek and Tammy Baker. good luck wherever you go and whatever you do!

We still have a few more busy weeks left so here is what has taken place and what is yet to come: • May 9th was the Lodge 24 Mothers Day barbecue fund raiser. Thank you all that helped and donated food. As a member of the adult lodge, I am grateful for all the hard work you youth members, parents and grandparents do for our lodge!

• May 15, we decorate and prepare for the may Fete. Come at 10 a.m. and be ready to help. Snacks will be provided.

• May 16 the youth club will sponsor a May Fete. Participants are asked to be at the hall at 1:30 p.m. for a quick run-through. At that time, I would like the parents to help get the kitchen ready for the meal which will be served after the May Pole dance. May Fete participants will receive a free meal ticket. The meal will consist of homemade egg noodles, soft shell tacos, pinto beans and salad. You will have a choice of which plate you would like.

A dessert and tea will come with each plate. Plates will sell for $2 each.

Sodas and tea will be for sale throughout the day. The May Fete will begin at 2:30 p.m. After the meal we will have an awards ceremony with special guests Melanie Zavodny, our State Youth Director (SYD) and Patsy Koslovsky, our District Youth Counselor (DYC). After the awards is the grand march and dance.

This is a hectic time of year for everyone with proms, graduations, school trips and whatever else is going on. We're getting ready for Youth Achievement Day on June 27th and we all know how nerve-wracking that is for us parents, youth leaders, DYCs and SYD. Hang in there, and have fun with everything you do.

The next youth club meeting will be on June 6th at 2 p.m. followed by a practice for YAD. Bring all items you will need to practice with.
