29th Annual WalkAmerica Project set for April 24 at Lion's Park in Temple In an effort to raise money for the March of Dimes, SPJST Home Office personnel invite you to join with them in the charity's 29th Annual WalkAmerica project. TeamWalk is the single largest source of funding for the March of Dimes and its Campaign for Healthier Babies. Participating is easy. The fivemile walk takes place on Saturday morning, April 24 at Lion's park in Temple.

Dismissal of Youth for Youth Meeting Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value.

Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as

the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically.

Option B : Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

The fall meeting was called to order at 11:05 a.m. by Sister Holly Hubenak.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by youth member Traci Dobecka, Lodge 6, Cottonwood. The Youth Pledge was read by youth member, Sandra Trickett, Lodge 66, Waco.

Welcome was, given by Brother Albert Kubala, President of Lodge 92, followed by a response by Brother John Engelke.

Youth members were dismissed from the general session to hold their meeting.

Sister Hubenak asked for the reading of the minutes for the fall meeting and correspondence. The motion was made by Brother George Panting, Lodge 66, Waco, to dismiss the reading of the minutes and to accept them as published in the Vestnik. A second was given by Sister Mary Ann Tesar, Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Motion passed.

Correspondence was received by Lodge 35, Elk as to being unable to pay dues at this time. Also, a letter was received from the Texas Czech Heritage and Culture Center, Inc. regarding 1999 calendars that are being developed and asked people to collect data and photographs. They are also asking for organizations to submit dates for their special events to be included in the calendar. You may purchase a business card sized ad to be included in the calendar. Included with the letter was a brochure of the center and envelopes for anyone interested in donating to the center.

Treasurer's report was given and submitted to the secretary by Treasurer, Sister Martha HubenakDurham. Report included dues not paid by lodges. Motion was made by Brother Jerry Kucera, Lodge 6, Cottonwood, to accept the treasurer's report as given. Second was given by Sister Rose Steinman, Lodge 154, Fort Worth. Motion was passed.

Brother George Pauling gave the rest home report indicating that they are still in the "black" — no red ink.

Needville Rest Home is having some problems keeping a full house with the competition from other homes. Taylor is basically having no problems staying at approximately 89 to 98 percent occupied. Taylor finished the chapel area and had a dedication which was attended by city officials and Chamber of Commerce. Brother Sid Pokladnik spoke at the ceremony. There will be an annual meeting on November 14, 1998.

Brother Pauling then gave the Fraternal Activities report. Supreme Lodge has set permanent dates for State contests such as horseshoe, domino, tarok and volleyball. At the last State FAC meeting, they decided to hold two FAC meetings each year.

The meeting had a lot of "brain-storming." Other meetings are set for January and August. He did ask that the lodges to make sure that they are keeping track of fraternal activities in their lodges and send them to the Supreme Lodge. He feels the IRS may be starting the check on the lodges' fraternal status. The State Fraternal Activities Coordinator has to turn in a

report as to these fraternal acts. These reports must be turned in or be subject to penalty if they are not.

Brother Pauling mentioned that some of the lodges are struggling, as is his lodge. He suggested that the lodges get,their people together and do some "brain-storming" as to how they can bring in more funds.

The Home Office report was given

by Vice President Leonard Mikeska for the Supreme Lodge. He reported that Sister Sherry Watkins from Lodge 154, Pilot Point-Tioga had the honor of winning a trip to the Texas Fraternal Congress, but she was unable to attend.

She was a Million Dollar Producer.

Anyone that is an FIC and a Million Dollar Producer wins a trip to the seminar. One of the things that was brought up at the seminar was that fraternal organizations need to work on getting the legislation to get an amendme-nt so that fraternal organizations may be exempted from taxes. Howard Leshikar is working on this, as are other fraternal organizations. Another thing that was brought up will affect the society more than anything has in a while. This has to do with licensing of agents. The last legislation set up a committee to study this possible licensing. No fraternal agents are licensed in Texas. This committee finished and is seeking to consolidate a large number of licenses into three or four only. They are also seeking for fraternal sales representatives to be licensed. To the best of his knowledge, the report is in the Insurance Commissioner's hands. The proposal from the committee would "grandfather" all SPJST sales representatives if the proposal from the committee is accepted by the legislation. They would be subject to continuing education. They would have to file for a license and get a license, but would not have :o sit through an exam. All new sales representatives would have to take the exam. There are three other organizations that are still working on this proposal.

Next, it was reported that the districts that have met their quotas will have their sales representatives recognized at a special banquet. Districts Four and Seven have already reached their quotas. He wants to reinforce that now is the time to work on their incentives. Lodges need to be willing to change to help with this new world that is out there.

The meeting was turned over to Brother Johnnie Krizan for District Director's report. Brother Krizan recognized the new State Youth Director, Sister Melanie Zavodny. He also reported that Katherine Morris Smith was hired for the vacated position for the Vestnik publication, formerly held

by Melanie.

Brother Krizan then mentioned the youths that were at the Texas Fraternal Congress which participated in the youth portion. We should be really proud of our youth's presentation.

Scholarships will be awarded at the end of May. In 1998, they awarded 56 scholarships and anticipated receiving

Brother Sid Pokladnik, Honorary District Director was asked to address the membership. He encouraged members to go and visit the new chapel at the rest home in Taylor. He also recognized the FICs in attendance and congratulated them in obtaining their FIC status. He thanked Brother Krizan for the continuing fine job that he is doing.

Brother Krizan came up and since the youth came out of their meeting, he formally announced State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny. She did address the members. She looks forward to working with everyone and if you have any suggestions, please share them with her.

Meeting was recessed for lunch.

The invocation was given in Czech by Sister Mary Steinman. There were 80 members in attendance.

President Hubenak asked for recognition of visitors. Brother B.J. Hlavaty announced the visitors attending the meeting.

The meeting proceeded to the committee reports: • By-laws-Sister Kay Lynn Kovar reminded the members of writing any by-law changes and to give them to her.

• Finance-Brother Michael Galler stated that their meeting in March will be looking at the Retirement Plan. If anyone has any suggestions or comments, please let him know.

• Insurance-Brother Ben Jarma stated that he would let Brother Jerry Kucera give the detailed report. He wanted to tell all sales representatives to keep up the good work and he wants to work on getting the youth active, and learning to become sales representatives, Brother Jerry Kucera gave his report. We have 18 sales representatives that have taken the FIC training and obtained their designation. He wants to challenge them to sell more certificates to keep our certificated count up.

There will be a new rate book sent out. Representatives should return the old rate book, making sure to take out any personal notes.

Since the youth were getting ready for the youth program, sites for the upcoming meeting were selected.

Lodge 154, Fort Worth will host the spring 1999 meeting on April 25, 1999. Other lodges spoke up for other future meetings. Site selections were made as follows: Lodge 180, Burleson - Fall Meeting 1999, Lodge 66, Waco Spring Meeting, 2000 and Lodge 84, Dallas - Fall Meeting, 2000.

Checks were presented to Lodge 92 for hosting this meeting and for the balance of cost of dinners.

Sister Bessie Petr gave report for the Publication Committee. They are continuing to look at different ways to use technology in the future of the SPJST and the Vestnik.

She then gave the report on the Youth Department. We had several of the youths from our district to participate in the Texas Fraternal Congress.

They did a wonderful job, again.

District youth group went to Six Flags Fright Night on October 3rd. There were 57 youths in attendance and several adults attended as chaperones.

Camp will be held four days - two of which will be on the weekend.

It is always nice when this happens as more adults are able to help without taking time off other jobs. Youth Achievement Day will be held at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on June 27, 1999.

A letter was read from Meribeth Novak requesting funding for Texas A&M Czech Club. Motion was made, seconded and approved to donate $250 from District General Funds to support the office expense, of the Texas A&M Czech Club (Club C).

Lavaca County Deputy Introduced President Siptak introduced our guest speaker, Deputy Tramer Woytek of the Lavaca County Sheriff's Department.

Officer Woytek gave an interesting and informative talk on Crime Stoppers and then answered questions.

He was presented a check for $25 from the lodge to assist this worthy cause.

Deputy Woytek was also asked to tell about his recent trip to New York and his appearance on the David Letterman Show with his drug dog who performed a silly pet trick. It was an exciting and memorable trip for him.

Sunshine Chairman Elsie Mascheck reported on the monthly bingo held for the residents of Steven's Convalescent Center. Members assisting were Jo Ann Matula, Mary Matula, Lillie Balusek and Elsie Mascheck. Get well cards were sent to Marie Holy and Daniel Drozd.

A report was given on the Lodge Officers' Workshop and Incentive Awards Banquet held February 27 at Academy Our lodge received the Bronze Award of a plaque and $750 Members attending were Joe Siptak, Patsy and Helen Zabransky and Annie and Elizabeth Vahalik. It was an informative and enjoyable day.

Family Day Scheduled in.August The members voted to keep the second Sunday in August for Family Day. The State Youth Achievement Day will also be held in Temple that day.

A report was given on the District Six Spring Meeting held in Moravia which was well attended. No. 6, Inc. reports on annual meeting Lodge

The annual meeting of Lodge No. 6, Inc., was called to order on Sunday, March 28, by President, Brother Johnnie Krizan. Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, Secretary, read minutes from last meeting and they were approved as read.

Treasurer, Brother George Straten, gave his annual report, which was accepted as presented. There was no report from the Audit Committee as of yet.

Contributions Approved Chairman of the Contributions Committee, Brother Bobbie Dobecka, was called upon for his recommendation. His recommendation was for a total of $1,000 from Lodge No. 6, Inc. for the 1999 donations towards community services. This was seconded and approved unanimously by a show of hands present. Approval of recipi ents at this time were: Ronald McDonald House in Temple, Club C (Czech Club at Texas A&M), McLennan County 4H, West Girl Scouts, Angel House of Waco, Family Abuse Center in Waco. McLennan/Hill County Czech Heritage, West Chamber of Commerce and West Senior Citizens.

SPJST Lodge 25 met on Thursday, March 11th at 7:30 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Johnnie Krajca.

A moment of silence was observed for Linda Collard.

President Linda Trojacek thanked all the sales representatives for working hard to achieved the Gold Awards in the incentive program. Also we would like to thank Ronnie Honza and Jennifer Honza for representing the lodge at the Straight Domino Tournament and our very own Vice President Jim Holahan and Ronnie Honza at the 42 Domino Tournaments. They always represent the lodge very well.

Youth Leader Sandra Slovak reported on the youth club. She will be attending the workshop and also the Lodge 84 lock-in. The youth had a meeting and Easter party on March 28th.

Minutes from the February 21, 1999 special meeting were read. Addition to the minutes to read: Sheldon Holub and Elizabeth Schilhab resigned from the nominating committee prior to accepting officers' positions; the change was approved as read.

President Sheldon Holub read and acted on all correspondence from the Home Office.

Trustee James Bacak and Jerry Kahanek are to get bids on installing a handicap bathroom also to check all other plumbing.

A motion that was tabled at the last meeting was voted on A motion was made by Edmond Kana and seconded by. Ruby Kunz to give Ross Juranek funds for his trip to the United Kingdom. Ross received a check in the amount of $350 from Lodge 40 for his expense. Congratulations, Ross on your achievement.

SPJST Lodge 40 lost one of its members, James Spur. We are extending our sympathy to your family and friends on the loss of your loved one.

Jane Ann Holub was accepted into our lodge by the membership.

The motion was made by Edmond Kana that the present officers remain on the same salary at this time seconded by Chuck Schwartzkopf.

A motion was made by Karel Matejka to dedicate the Platinum Award winnings to'fraternal activities and promotion only, seconded by Chuck Schwartzkopf.

The next meeting and social will be held on April 11, 1999.

There is no excuse for being so late in getting the minutes out except for illness and a full time job; I will do better next month.

79, Corpus Christi receives plans for membership drive Lodge

The monthly meeting was held on Sunday, March 21 was called to order at 2:15 p.m. by President Jerry Sijansky. All the officers were present except for Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner who was absent and is slowly recovering from major surgery. Brother Jerry, you were greatly missed; hope you are soon back!

Our guests for the meeting were District Field Sales Representative Larry Wagner, his wife, Kathy, and children, Morgan and Shawnie. We certainly hope you enjoy coming to our meeting and you are all welcome any time.

The minutes of the February meeting were read by Secretary Helen Pavelka and were approved as read.

Also, the correspondence was read.

The financial report was given by Treasurer Milly Elzner. She couldn't give a full report because she had not received the monthly statement. So it was a brief report and was accepted as she reported.

Wednesday, April 14, 1999—VESTNIK/9 President Jerry Sijansky read a setter from Supreme Lodge President Leshikar about the latest news on the ad valorem tax. It was good news— that when and if it will be on the ballot in November election, we are to be sure to vote on it.

SPJST Team Rallies to Build Membership Brother Larry Wagner encouraged the lodge to push for 25 or more new applications for the incentive award.

He said members can help the lodge to reach this goal by recommending new applications and also win a trip for their efforts, contact the sales representatives. He also reported that a new plan for insurance is coming out soon, which should help toward working for the incentive award. There is a team from the Supreme Lodge representing the youth club, sales representatives, etc. who will be working with local lodges where non-members are invited to attend to learn about SPJST. This would include a meal for which the Supreme Lodge would pay $50. More details later as they are available.

Brother Jerry Sijansky reported on the workshop on February 27, that it was very informative. Some topics that were covered were: the SPJST has made sound investments, is in good shape financially, there were no foreclosures in 1998, more new members are needed, have insurance written, but with fewer members, need to increase number of members, convention is coming in June 2000, read the by-laws if changes are needed, start thinking about these issues now. He also said Lodge 79 this year got the First Step Award and $200, and that we need to work harder to go for the Gold or even the Platinum Award for next year.

Awards Dinner Set for April 25 Since District Seven is holding the spring meeting on the third Sunday, April 18, we changed our monthly, this month only, to the fourth Sunday, April 25. We are having our awards dinner on Sunday, April 25 with a catered dinner starting at 12:30 p.m. to be followed by the monthly meeting and all the awards. This will be held at the Sokol Hall as usual. So we know how much food to order, we are asking members to please call, Jerry Sijansky 937-4324, Jerry Elzner 991-1746 or Helen Pavelka 387-1384 to let us know is you plan to attend and how many.

Literacy Council Donation The monthly donation of $50 was given to the Corpus Christi Literacy Council. They are currently having a fund raising drive and can always use more money.

The door prizes were donated by President Jerry Sijansky, for which we thank him. The lucky winners were Edna Voldan, Joe Nemecek, Lera Nemecek and Anna M. Moss.

To update since my last report on sick members, Brother Jerry Elzner spent some time in the hospital after he developed pnpimonia, but now is at home, making slow progress, gaining strength and able to walk more everyday. Sister Milly Elzner is okay now, too. Also, Sister Betty Jurica of Lodge 117 has had a cold, which postponed the hip surgery indefinitely. She is doing okay, gets around wit her walker just slower than she wants to be. Get

Dear members and friends, I hope you all had a wonderful Easter, as my family did.

Karen Bender, one of our youth and who is a member of the University of Houston Band, went to Ireland with the band to perform in the Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Dublin. They went to Cliffs of Moher in Ireland and went to church services at Westminster Abby and to Piccadilly Circus in London.

They were in Ireland 5 days and in London 2 days. They left on March 14 and returned on March 22nd. I'm sure they had a wonderful time. Karen's mother, Jeanette, went along as a chaperone.

Memorable Easter I went to the annual easter egg hunt at Lodge 88 on Saturday, March 27th.

The youth had all the tables decorated and had balloons hanging from the ceiling and balloons tied to the chairs.

It was beautiful. They had easter egg hunts for all the little ones, by age group, as well as the adults. I even hunted eggs—got seven eggs and one chocolate easter bunny. Everybody got a prize. The youth took pictures, if you wanted one, with Miss Bunny. They charged $2.00 per picture which went toward a trip for the youth this summer. They had a bench decorated with crepe paper and pastel colored balloons and a huge bow. This was in the annex building of the lodge. State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny was there, as well as District Five Director Louis Hanus, and some members from Northwest Houston's Lodge 196. For refreshments, they served hot dogs, chips, vegetables and dips and pink lemonade, along with a big cake. It was a great time for young and old.

She and her group really do a fine job with the youth.

Helen Hegwood and Robert Ermis sang the American National Anthem and the Czech National Anthem at 12:00 noon. There were children's activities and Louise Keyes was there painting eggs. The children really enjoyed that, as well as the adults.

They had a silent auction, raffle, Czech food, vendors of Czech imports, and collectibles. I tasted some wine made by a Texas winery (they were giving free samples) and it was delicious. They also had a genealogy room, where you could research ancestral names. I spoke with Dan Hrna, President of the Czech Heritage Society - Harris County Chapter and he said he was very pleased with the large crowd. They had a parade of costumes as there were lots of people in Czech dress. On April 25th, they will be having another festival at the University of St. Thomas - Jerabeck Center. Then on April 30th and May 1st and 2nd, they will be at the Czech Fest, Rosenberg, Texas. The Melodian Czech Band from the Czech Republic will be performing. Go to one of these if you can.

Margaret Spahr's brother in-law passed away on March 24th and was buried on March 27th in St. Louis.

Margaret went to St. Louis to be with her sister. Lillian Orth passed away on March 29 and was buried on March 31.

She was 80 years old and a member of Lodge 88 and the daughter of the late Joe and Vlasta Stasta, also members of Lodge 88. On Wednesday, March 31, Anna H. Hoffman passed away in Schulenberg, Texas. She was 94 and she too was a member of Lodge 88, as well as the Birthday Sisters. Lillie Spies and Edwin Gerlich's niece, Sue Spanihele, passed away on March 26 and was buried on March 29. She lived in Hallettsville, Texas and was 64. Also, Eleanor Krause passed away on April 1 and was buried on April 5.

She was 78 and lived in Halletsville, too and was married to LeRoy Krause.

Debra Elaine Dobesh was wed to Peter Otto Barnhart on March 27th.

She was formerly a member of the youth club at Lodge 88, and also the granddaughter of the late Willie Mae and Edward Stang.

Almeida Bravenec's children, Linda and Joan, are giving her a birthday party on April 11, her 80th. Also sharing April birthdays are Clara Jecmenek, on April 7; Helen Hegwood, on April 10; Bessie Lero, on April 27; and Lillie Spies, on April 27.

Lillie Spies daughter Aggie and her husband Joe will be visiting Lillie on her birthday. They are from California and will be here a week.

Ellen and Ed Miculka took a bus load to the casino at Coushatta Indian Reservation in Louisiana. I didn't hear of anyone winning big but we all had a great time. Thanks to Georgia Barcak for the sandwiches and to Earline Hoffman for the cookies.

I just learned that Hilbert Pechacek had surgery on his knee on Monday, April 5th and that Laurabelle Warnasch had to be taken to the emergency room for pains in her stomach. She is home now after having tests run. I'm so glad to hear that Clara Jecmenek is home from the hospital after being on the critical list for such a long time. Also, Jerry Ermis is still not feeling very well. We wish all of you a speedy recovery. I saw Hilda Tidwell and her husband, Eldon, at Pecos Grill last Friday night. It was really great to see Hilda after her stroke. Also, Pauline Traylor and her date were with them.

Volna Cechie, 135, Ennis hosts TCHCC fund raiser on April 25 Lodge

Dear Members, We are looking forward to the TCHCC (Texas Czech Heritage Cultural Center) fund raiser to be held at the Sokol Activity Center, E. Hwy 34 Ennis, on Sunday, April 25th. Our lodge will be joining other organizations and individuals as sponsors to help pay for the band's expenses.

Music will be by the Melodian Band from the Czech Republic.

Many of you had the opportunity to enjoy the singing of Miroslav Chodl, the band's leader, during his visit to Texas last year. He is bringing his band to the USA and will be playing in many cities. Members of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas met for their spring state meeting on March 20 at Boysville, located in Converse, Texas.

The meeting was hosted by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Bexar County chapter. Guest speaker for the occasion was former astronaut Colonel John Blaha.

After taking care of lodge business, it's time to just chat.

Czech Exhibit Renovation Update Ladislav Zezula, President of the Bexar County chapter reported on the progress,of the renovation of the Czech exhibit at the Institute of Texan Cultures.

This is a project that all Texans may participate in with their financial contributions. The first financial phase of the project is complete and the second phase is in progress.

Lodge 175, Rosenberg President Pat Parma presents $500 check to Ladislav Zezula, President of the Bexar County Czech Heritage Society of Texas. The check will be applied toward the renovation of the Czech exhibit at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio, Texas.

Matching Donation Announced SPJST Lodge 175, Rosenberg represented by Pat Parma, made a donation of $500 toward the renovation of the Czech exhibit at the Institute of Texan Cultures. Lodge 175 then made a challenge for the first individual or organization to make a $500 donation, the lodge would match that donation with another $500. That challenge was met within two minutes of the announcement.

Lodge Gives $2,000 Towards Czech Exhibit Renovation SPJST Lodge 175 Rosenberg is proud to be a part of the renovation project. To date, we have contributed $2,000 to the Institute of Texan Cultures, San Antonio, for the renovation of the Czech exhibit and most of all to the education of our future generations.

Our next meeting date was changed to April 15 instead of April 8 because of the antique activities that will take place in Warrenton during that week.

Lodge 189, Bryan - College Station would like to invite all SPJST members and their families to a tour of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. The tour will be Sunday, April 25th at 2:00 p.m and will take about two to two and one half hours.

Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall which will be there on it's last day of a 10-day visit. Cameras and camcorders are welcome, but flashes are not to be used. Members of the group will get a discounted admission price of $2.50 per person, children 16 and under are free. The museum is located on the west campus of Texas A&M, near the airport. 196, HoustonWest schedules April 18 membership rally Lodge

Lodge 196, Houston-West had its monthly meeting on March 21, 1999.

The meeting started at 2 p.m. and we discussed our upcoming events.

Membership Rally This Sunday For our April 18, 1999 meeting, we are having a special presentation to get some new members. The regular meeting will start at 2 p.m.

First, we will have our lodge meeting and our lunch and the presentation will follow. We are encouraging everyone to bring as many non-members as they can. This will not only benefit our lodge, but it will help to make people aware of what SPJST is.

So bring your friends, family and invite your neighbors.

The lodge will be providing the meat for the meal and everyone else is encouraged to bring a covered dish or a pastry. You should bring enough for your family plus some extra for the others.

204, Stephenville members enjoy covered dish dinner in March Lodge

The regular meeting was called to order by Vice President Joyce Russell at the home of B.J. and Joyce Russell near Hico, Texas on Sunday the 21st of March. President Judith Riola was moving to their new home and Youth Leader Sandra Pierce was out of town visiting her son.

There was discussion about the officers' workshop at Lodge 177, Academy and how we could use some of the to better Lodge 204. There was discussion about the upcoming 4th of July in Stephenville and putting some new ideas together on how to raise some funds to operate the lodge in the future. Also, we're thinking of ways of getting more members to join in on meetings.

After the meeting, there was a covered dish dinner and a social hour.

The Good Old Days I remember 1924—some people call back then the good old days. That was the year that J. Edgar Hoover became

the head of the F.B.I., the first Winter Olympics were held in France, "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin premiered and was an instant hit, Goldwyn and Mayer merged to become M.G.M. and Calvin Coolidge was reelected president by a landslide.

Famous people born in 1924 were Marlon Brando, Lauren Bacall, Doris Day, Buddy Hackett, Don Knotts and Carroll O'Connor.

The average income in 1924 was $1,402, coffee cost 42 cents per pound, Milk of Magnesia was 39 cents per bottle, a Ford auto cost $290. and a cut-to-fit mail order house cost $975 (including hardware, glass, etc.) Now that seems like a bargain at today's prices, but if you travel around in some of the smaller towns, you will find a lot of these mail order homes are still being lived in today.

The next meeting of Lodge 204 will be held at B.J. and Joyce Russell's home on Sunday, April 18th at 2 p.m.

Hope to have a crowd attending and there will be a covered dish dinner and social hour.

Jennie Kneschk Celebrates 100th Birthday Congratulations to Sister Jennie Meissner Kneschk, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Friends and family came from all over the state of Texas to attemd a party hosted by her son and daughter inlaw, Norman and Gracie Kneschk.

In the picture, Jennie is pictured with her son, Norman, who is Secretary/Reporter for Lodge 204, Stephenville. She is proudly displaying a framed birthday message from Texas Governor George W. Bush. absent due to illness.

Treasurer Norma Baker reported our treasury balance as being $373.97.

Financial Secretary Anna Marie Moss reported that she had delivered a flower arrangement, a gift from the circle, to Jerry Elzner, who was in the hospital after cancer surgery.

Get well cards for both Jerry and Milly Elzner (husband and wife) were passed around for members to sign.

Edwin Jurica, husband of Betty, passed away recently. Our condolences go out to Betty and her family.

Several members gave monetary gifts to the circle in memory of Edwin— Anna Marie Moss, Pauline Novosad, Rose Huff, Wilma Hayek and Betty Jurica. Our sincere thanks to you ladies fro this king gesture.

Also received was a thank you from Betty for the circle's donation to the SPJST Scholarship Fund, in memory of Edwin Jurica.

March birthday ladies who were honored were Velma Malchar, Marion Peterek and Helen Kasparek.

Jerry Elzner called during our meeting to thank the ladies for the flowers, card and prayers which we -had sent his way. He was home but said he was sorry that he nor Milly were not yet able to attend our meeting.

Frances Kosarek was also on the sick list with a bad case of flu.

An announcement was made that the Sokol Gymnasts (youth) are sponsoring a Belgian Waffle Breakfast on March 14, 1999. All you can eat waffles, sausages served with a variety of syrups plus coffee for only $5. Sounds like a winner!

Anna Marie Moss suggested that we make up Easter baskets for children of mothers staying at the Women's Shelter. After discussion and voting, those who wish will bring filled baskets to our April meeting. Some may

We, the Resolution Committee of Lodge 18, Elgin, on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our deepest condolences to the family and many friends of our departed lodge brother, GEORGE JOHN OTIS DIEBEL, age 81, who died on Sunday, March 28, 1999, in Temple, Texas.

He was born on January 9, 1918, at Type, Texas, to John and Wilhemina Diebel.

Mr. Diebel was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Dallas James Ward; and two sisters, Irene Limmer and Leona Diebel.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dolly Diebel; a son Danny Diebel and wife, Sue, of Austin; a daughter, Kathy Ward and husband, James, of Elgin; a granddaughter, DaLynn Prather and husband, Shane, of Austin; two grandsons, Jordan and Jacob Ward, of Elgin; a brother, Johnny Diebel and wife, Joyce, of Des Plaines, Illinois.

George was a member of St. Peter's Ev. Lutheran Church in Elgin where he was a past church councilman and Sunday School superintendent. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion where he had served as Past Commander. George was also a member of SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Ev. Lutheran Church in Elgin, with Pastor J.W. Mielke officiating. Interment was in Elgin City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the organ fund at St. Peter's Ev. Lutheran Church, Elgin.

Funeral arrangements were with Elgin Funeral Home, Elgin.

May he rest in eternal peace.

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, Texas and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the family of our departed lodge brother, PAUL REED, of Holland, who passed away on Friday, March 5, 1999 at the age of 80.

Brother Reed was born in the Sunshine community in Bell County to William S. and Rachel (Houston) Reed. He was a rancher and a farmer.

He received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from Southwestern University. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Janosky-Heisch Lodge 526, SPJST Lodge 80, Holland and First United Methodist Church in Holland.

Services for Brother Reed were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, 1999 at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett with the Reverend Ron Bellomy officiating. Burial was in the Reed family cemetery on Sunshine Road near Holland.

May our departed brother rest in eternal peace and his memory remain with us forever.

Lodge 5, Pilot PointTioga member expresses appreciation for youth leaders I would like to congratulate our youth club leaders,Kathy and Karen, for their time effort and dedication. They have assumed a position with the youth of today and are really striving to get them involved in the community. Kathy and Karen have given up their time to attend banquets and workshops to learn more about they can do to achieve the status wanted for the youth club. They are willing to go out of their way to promote the members and obtain new prospects.

I personally would like to congratulate them on a job well done. Kathy and Karen are two extraordinary women who have taken their roles seriously and made changes to the youth club.

We now meet in a respectable manner, without rude comments and appropriate behavior. Kathy and Karen have stressed the importance of standing up for what you believe in as well as what you can achieve from SPJST. Although Kathy and Karen both have teenagers, they still find time to adopt their youth club members. They are always there whenever you need them and promise to respect your decisions throughout your attendance at the meetings. They greatly miss the members who missed the meetings and wonder what kept them from gracing everyone with their appearance.

Once again, I would like to express my gratification toward the best youth club leaders, Kathy and Karen, that have had the pleasure of working with Lodge 5 youth club members.

Dear Readers, The Snook SPJST Youth Club held its monthly meeting on March 3, 1999.

The meeting was well attended.

The youth club welcomed two new members in October, Robby and Mark Havens. We also had a Halloween hayride and participated at the Halloween carnival and spookhouse in downtown Caldwell. The youth participated in a costume contest and a pumpkin-decorating contest. They also enjoyed the spook house and hot dogs that we purchased from Project Graduation.

In November, we attended the District One Fall Fun Day held at our lodge and enjoyed playing outdoors and playing bingo. We welcomed new member, Jordan Hejl at our November meeting.

December was busy as usual.

Assistant Youth Leader, Holly Suehs got married on Saturday, December 5th.

Congratulations, Holly and welcome Ralph. We held our meeting in conjunction with our Christmas party/lock-in.

Twenty-five youth, along with 20 guests and 12 adults enjoyed a night full of food, crafts, games, videos, gifts and fun!

After a mere three hours of sleep, we all woke up, ate left-over pizza for breakfast and headed home to get more sleep.

The youth also participated in the lodge's annual Christmas social and memorial service. A delicious roast beef lunch was served followed by a tribute to our deceased members. Youth members assisted our guest speaker, Bud Petty by lighting a candle in memory of each lodge member who had passed away in 1998. The youth members singing several Christmas songs followed the memorial service.

January, February and March were also busy months for the New Tabor Youth Club, but I'll save that for the next time.

reported on these activities. In. October, the youth club held their annual Appreciation/Awards Banquet. Special guests this day were former State Youth Director Joni Lange, State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny, District One Director Donnie Victorick and officers of our mother lodge. A noon meal was served followed by a presentation of trophies to the youth club members who had perfect attendance for the 1997-98 youth year. The event was also to honor the grandparents of our youth members.

Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society reports on February meeting The Concho Valley Czech Heritage Society of Runnels, Concho and Tom Green Counties held its first quarterly meeting of 1999 on Sunday, February 21. The meeting was held at the SPJST Lodge 49 in Rowena.

During the brief meeting, Pauline Shiller was presented with the Distinguished Service Award. Pauline, a native of Rowena, had served as the chapter's reporter since it was established in 1987 until her retirement in 1998. In gratitude for her outstanding service the Concho Valley Chapter, Pauline will remain the chapter's Honorary Reporter and was named a Life Time Member.

The regular meeting was shortened so that members and visitors could participate in a beginners' class in the traditional Czech card game of Tarok.

Keeping alive the Czech culture and traditions are important goals of the Heritage Society, and an afternoon of playing Tarok is an enjoyable way to do just that.

The next quarterly meeting is scheduled for Sunday, May 16 at 2:30 p.m. at the SPJST Lodge 49 Hall in Rowena. After the meeting, members and visitors will gather for a friendly game of Tarok and share a light lunch of sandwiches and desserts.
